The intermediate neutron capture process

Context. The intermediate neutron capture process (i-process) can develop during proton ingestion events (PIE), potentially during the early stages of low-mass low-metallicity asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Aims. We examine the impact of overshoot mixing on the triggering and development of i-process nucleosynthesis in AGB stars of various initial masses and metallicities. Methods. We computed AGB stellar models, with initial masses of 1, 2, 3, and 4 M⊙ and metallicities in the −2.5 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ 0 range, using the stellar evolution code STAREVOL with a network of 1160 nuclei coupled to the transport equations. We considered different overshooting profiles below and above the thermal pulses, and below the convective envelope. Results. The occurrence of PIEs is found to be primarily governed by the amount of overshooting at the top of pulse (ftop) and to increase with rising ftop. For ftop = 0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.1, we find that 0%, 6%, 24%, and 86% of our 21 AGB models with −2 < [Fe/H] < 0 experience a PIE, respectively. Variations of the overshooting parameters during a PIE leads to a scatter on abundances of 0.5 − 1 dex on elements, with 36 < Z < 56; however, this barely impacts the production of elements with 56 < Z < 80, which therefore appear to be a reliable prediction of our models. Actinides are only produced if the overshooting at the top of pulse is small enough. We also find that PIEs leave a 13C-pocket at the bottom of the pulse that can give rise to an additional radiative s-process nucleosynthesis. In the case of the 2 M⊙ models with [Fe/H] = −1 and −0.5, it produces a noticeable mixed i + s chemical signature at the surface. Finally, the chemical abundance patterns of 22 observed r/s-stars candidates (18 dwarfs or giants and 4 post-AGB) with −2 < [Fe/H] < −1 are found to be in reasonable agreement with our AGB model predictions. The binary status of the dwarfs/giants being unclear, we suggest that these stars have acquired their chemical pattern either from the mass transfer of a now-extinct AGB companion or from an early generation AGB star that polluted the natal cloud. Conclusions. The occurrence of PIEs and the development of i-process nucleosynthesis in AGB stars remains sensitive to the overshooting parametrization. A high (yet realistic) ftop value triggers PIEs at (almost) all metallicities. The existence of r/s-stars at [Fe/H] ≃ −1 is in favour of an i-process operating in AGB stars up to this metallicity. Stricter constraints from multi-dimensional hydrodynamical models on overshoot coefficients could deliver new insights into the contribution of AGB stars to heavy elements in the Universe.

Neutron-capture elements in a sample of field metal-poor N-rich dwarfs

Context. The aim of this work is to measure the abundances of n-capture elements in a sample of six metal-poor N-rich dwarfs that were formed in globular clusters, and subsequently became unbound from the cluster. These N-rich stars, HD 25329, HD 74000, HD 160617, G 24-3, G53-41, and G90-3, were previously studied in Paper I. Aims. The abundances of the n-capture elements in these stars were compared to the abundances in normal metal-poor dwarfs and in globular cluster stars in the same metallicity range in order to find evidence of an enrichment of the material from which these N-rich stars were formed, by the ejecta of massive asymptotic giant branch stars (AGB) inside the cluster. Methods. The abundances of 15 elements, from Sr to Yb, were derived line by line by comparing the observed profiles to synthetic spectra in a sample of six metal-poor N-rich dwarfs and nine classical metal-poor dwarfs. Results. We show that, generally speaking, the behaviours of the intermediate metal-poor stars here studied and the extremely metal-poor stars are very different. In particular, the scatter of the [X/Fe] ratios is much smaller since many more stars contribute to the enrichment. Among our six metal-poor N-rich stars, three stars (G24-3 and HD 74000 and maybe also HD 160617) present an enrichment in elements formed by the s-process, typical of a contribution of AGB stars, unexpected at the metallicity of these stars. This suggests that the intracluster medium from which these stars were formed was enriched by a first generation of massive AGB stars. Another N-rich star, G53-41, is also rich in s-process elements, but since it is more metal-rich this could be due to the normal galactic enrichment by low-mass AGB stars before the formation of the cluster. In contrast, two stars (G 90-3 and HD 25329) have an abundance pattern compatible with a pure r-process such as that seen in metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] < −1.5.

Wide post-common envelope binaries containing ultramassive white dwarfs: evidence for efficient envelope ejection in massive asymptotic giant branch stars

ABSTRACT Post-common envelope binaries (PCEBs) containing a white dwarf (WD) and a main-sequence (MS) star can constrain the physics of common envelope evolution and calibrate binary evolution models. Most PCEBs studied to date have short orbital periods (Porb ≲ 1 d), implying relatively inefficient harnessing of binaries’ orbital energy for envelope expulsion. Here, we present follow-up observations of five binaries from 3rd data release of Gaia mission containing solar-type MS stars and probable ultramassive WDs ($M\gtrsim 1.2\ {\rm M}_{\odot}$) with significantly wider orbits than previously known PCEBs, Porb = 18–49 d. The WD masses are much higher than expected for systems formed via stable mass transfer at these periods, and their near-circular orbits suggest partial tidal circularization when the WD progenitors were giants. These properties strongly suggest that the binaries are PCEBs. Forming PCEBs at such wide separations requires highly efficient envelope ejection, and we find that the observed periods can only be explained if a significant fraction of the energy released when the envelope recombines goes into ejecting it. Our one-dimensional stellar models including recombination energy confirm prior predictions that a wide range of PCEB orbital periods, extending up to months or years, can potentially result from Roche lobe overflow of a luminous asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. This evolutionary scenario may also explain the formation of several wide WD + MS binaries discovered via self-lensing, as well as a significant fraction of post-AGB binaries and barium stars.

GN-z11: Witnessing the formation of second-generation stars and an accreting massive black hole in a massive star cluster

We explore the possibility of the N-rich young proto-galaxy GN-z11, recently observed at z = 10.6 by JWST, being the result of the formation of second generation stars from pristine gas and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) ejecta in a massive globular cluster or nuclear star cluster. We show that a second generation forming out of gas polluted by the ejecta of massive AGB stars and mixed with gas of a standard composition accounts for the unusually large N/O in the GN-z11 spectrum. The timing of the evolution of massive (4–7.5 M⊙) AGBs also provides a favorable environment for the growth of a central stellar mass black hole to the AGN stage observed in GN-z11. According to our model, the progenitor system was born when the age of the Universe was ≃260 − 380 Myr, well within the bounds of the pre-reionization epoch.

The complex stellar system M 22: constraining the chemical enrichment from AGB stars using magnesium isotope ratios

ABSTRACT The complex star cluster M 22 (NGC 6656) provides a unique opportunity for studying the slow neutron capture (s-)process nucleosynthesis at low metallicity due to its two stellar groups with distinct iron-peak and neutron capture element abundances. Previous studies attribute these abundance differences to pollution from $3-6 \ \rm {M}_{\odot }$ asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars which produce significant quantities of the neutron-rich Mg isotopes 25Mg and 26Mg. We report the first-ever measurements of Mg isotopic abundance ratios at $\rm {[Fe/H]} \ \sim -2$ in a globular cluster-like system using very high-resolution and signal-to-noise spectra (R = 110 000, S/N = 300 per pixel at 514 nm) from the VLT/UVES spectrograph for six stars; three in each s-process group. Despite the presence of star-to-star variations in 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg, we find no correlation with heavy element abundances, implying that the nucleosynthetic source of s-process enrichment must not influence Mg isotope ratios. Instead, a key result of this work is that we identify correlations between 26Mg/24Mg and some light elements. Using a custom suite of AGB nucleosynthesis yields tailored to the metallicity of M 22, we find that low mass ($\sim 1 \rm {-} 3 \ \rm {M}_{\odot }$) AGB stars are capable of reproducing the observed s-process abundances of M 22 and that the absence of any difference in Mg isotope ratios between the two s-process groups precludes AGBs with masses above $\sim 3 \ \rm {M}_{\odot }$. This places tighter constraints on possible formation scenarios and suggests an age difference of at least $\sim 280 \rm {-} 480 \ \rm {Myr}$ between the two populations which is independent of isochrone fitting.

Presolar silicon carbide grains of types Y and Z: their strontium and barium isotopic compositions and stellar origins

We report the Sr and Ba isotopic compositions of 18 presolar SiC grains of types Y (11) and Z (7), rare types commonly argued to have formed in lower-than-solar metallicity asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We find that the Y and Z grains show higher 88Sr/87Sr and more variable 138Ba/136Ba ratios than mainstream (MS) grains. According to FRANEC Torino AGB models, the Si, Sr, and Ba isotopic compositions of our Y and Z grains can be consistently explained if the grains came from low mass AGB stars with 0.15 Zsun <= Z < 1.00 Zsun, in which the 13C neutron exposure for the slow neutron-capture process is greatly reduced with respect to that required by MS grains for a 1.0 Z8 AGB star. This scenario is in line with the previous finding based on Ti isotopes, but it fails to explain the indistinguishable Mo isotopic compositions of MS, Y, and Z grains.

Detailed analysis of a sample of field metal-poor N-rich dwarfs

Aims. The aim of this work is to compare the detailed chemical composition of the field N-rich dwarf stars to the second-generation stars of globular clusters (GCs) in order to investigate the hypothesis that they originated in GCs.Methods. We measured the abundance of 23 elements (from Li to Eu) in a sample of six metal-poor N-rich stars (three of them pointed out for the first time), and we compared their chemical composition to (i) the chemical composition observed in a sample of classic metal-poor stars and (ii) the abundances observed in the second-generation stars of GCs.Results. In metal-poor N-rich stars, C and O are slightly deficient, but the scatter of [(C+N+O)/Fe] is very small, a strong indication that the N enrichment is the result of pollution by CNO-processed material. The N-rich stars of our sample, similarly to the second-generation stars in the GCs, show an excess of Na and sometimes of Al, as expected if the material from which these stars were formed, has been polluted by the ejecta of massive asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. For the first time, we have been able to establish an anti-correlation Na–O in field stars such as the one observed in NGC 6752. The N-rich star HD 74000 has a rather low [Eu/Ba] ratio for its metallicity. Such an anomaly is also observed in several second-generation stars of M 15.Conclusions. This analysis supports the hypothesis that the N-rich stars observed today in the field were born as second-generation stars in GCs.

Theoretical Estimate of the Half-life for the Radioactive 134Cs and 135Cs in Astrophysical Scenarios

We analyze the CsBa and Cs Ba β − decays, which are crucial production channels for Ba isotopes in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We calculate, starting from relativistic quantum mechanics, the effects of multichannel scattering onto weak decays, including nuclear and electronic excited states (ESs) populated above ≃10 keV, for both parent and daughter nuclei. We find increases in the half-lives for T > 108 K (by more than a factor of 3 for 134Cs) as compared to previous works based on systematics. We also discuss our method in view of these previous calculations. An important impact on half-lives comes from nuclear ES decays, while including electronic temperatures yields further increases of about 20% at energies of 10–30 keV, typical of AGB stars of moderate mass (M ≲ 8 M ⊙). Despite properly considering these effects, the new rates remain sensitively lower than the Takahashi & Yokoi values, implying longer half-lives at least above 8–9 keV. Our rate predictions are in substantial accord with recent results based on the shell model, and strongly modify branching ratios along the s-process path previously adopted. With our new rate, nucleosynthesis models well account for the isotopic admixtures of Ba in presolar SiC grains and in the Sun.

Final results on the 13C(α,n)16O cross section at low energies at LUNA

It is well established that the 13C(α, n)16O reaction (Q=2.215 MeV) is the major neutron source feeding the s-process in low mass (1−3M⊙) Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. In the last decades, several measurements have been performed. Nevertheless, no dataset reaches the Gamow window (140 keV &lt;Ec.m.&lt;250 keV). This is due to the exponential drop of the cross section σ(E) with decreasing energy. The consequence is that the reaction rate becomes so low that the cosmic background becomes predominant in surface laboratories. A recent measurement was carried out in deep underground laboratory of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in the framework of the LUNA experiment. To measure the 13C(α, n)16O cross section at low energies, a multiple effort has been performed to suppress the background in the setup, to maximise the detector efficiency and to keep under control the target modification under an intense stable beam provided by the LUNA accelerator (&lt;I&gt;= 200 µA). Thanks to these accuracies, the 13C(α, n)16O cross section was measured in the center of mass energy range 230 keV &lt;Ecm&lt;305 keV with a maximum 20% overall uncertainty. This allowed to constrain the reaction rate at T=0.1 GK at 15% uncertainty and to lead the way for new possible astrophysical consequences.

The ramp-up of interstellar medium enrichment at z &gt; 4

Fluorine is one of the most interesting elements for nuclear and stellar astrophysics. Fluorine abundance was first measured for stars other than the Sun in 1992, then for a handful metal-poor stars, which are likely to have formed in the early Universe. The main production sites of fluorine are under debate and include asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, $\nu$-process in core-collapse supernovae, and Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. Due to the difference in the mass and lifetime of progenitor stars, high redshift observations of fluorine can help constrain the mechanism of fluorine production in massive galaxies. Here, we report the detection of HF (S/N = 8) in absorption in a gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxy at redshift z=4.4 with $N_{\rm HF}$/$N_{\rm{H_2}}$ as high as $\sim2\times10^{-9}$, indicating a very quick ramp-up of the chemical enrichment in this high-z galaxy. At z=4.4, AGB stars of a few solar masses are very unlikely to dominate the enrichment. Instead, we show that WR stars are required to produce the observed fluorine abundance at this time, with other production mechanisms becoming important at later times. These observations therefore provide an insight into the underlying processes driving the `ramp-up' phase of chemical enrichment alongside rapid stellar mass assembly in a young massive galaxy.

Isotope Systematics of Presolar Silicate Grains: New Insights from Magnesium and Silicon

Abstract We report on Mg and Si isotope data of 86 presolar silicate grains identified through NanoSIMS oxygen ion imaging in thin sections of carbonaceous and ordinary chondrites. The O, Mg, and Si isotope data of 106 presolar silicates (including grains studied previously by our group) suggest division of O isotope Group 1 grains into four subpopulations: (i) “normal,” (ii) 25Mg-rich, (iii) 26Mg-rich, and (iv) 25Mg-poor. Normal Group 1 grains (∼60% of Group 1 grains) formed in the winds of low-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, with Mg and Si defining linear arrays with slopes of ∼0.9 and 1.37, respectively, in three-isotope representations, most likely representing Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). The 25Mg-rich grains (∼25%) show enrichments in 25Mg of up to a factor 2.4 relative to solar composition and most likely formed in supernova (SN) ejecta or the winds of intermediate-mass AGB stars. The 26Mg-rich and 25Mg-poor Group 1 grains lie below the Mg GCE line and their isotopic compositions favor origins from supergiants or SNe. The O isotope Group 2 grains show a wide range of Mg-isotopic compositions, similar to Group 1 grains, with likely origins from massive AGB stars, super-AGB stars, supergiants, and SNe. The Mg- and Si-isotopic compositions of Group 4 grains are compatible with previously proposed SN origins. Our results suggest that &gt;30% of presolar silicates formed in the winds of supergiants and in SN ejecta, and that low-mass AGB stars appear to have contributed only some 50% to presolar silicates, less than previously thought.

Low Mass Stars or Intermediate Mass Stars? The Stellar Origin of Presolar Oxide Grains Revealed by Their Isotopic Composition

Among presolar grains, oxide ones are made of oxygen, aluminum, and a small fraction of magnesium, produced by the 26Al decay. The largest part of presolar oxide grains belong to the so-called group 1 and 2, which have been suggested to form in Red Giant Branch (RGB) and Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, respectively. However, standard stellar nucleosynthesis models cannot account for the 17O/16O, 18O/16O, and 26Al/27Al values recorded in those grains. Hence, for more than 20 years, the occurrence of mixing phenomena coupled with stellar nucleosynthesis have been suggested to account for this peculiar isotopic mix. Nowadays, models of massive AGB stars experiencing Hot Bottom Burning or low mass AGB stars where Cool Bottom Process, or another kind of extra-mixing, is at play, nicely fit the oxygen isotopic mix of group 2 oxide grains. The largest values of the 26Al/27Al ratio seem somewhat more difficult to account for.

The pulsational properties of ultra-massive DB white dwarfs with carbon-oxygen cores coming from single-star evolution

Context. Ultra-massive white dwarfs are relevant for many reasons: their role as type Ia supernova progenitors, the occurrence of physical processes in the asymptotic giant branch phase, the existence of high-field magnetic white dwarfs, and the occurrence of double white dwarf mergers. Some hydrogen-rich ultra-massive white dwarfs are pulsating stars and, as such, they offer the possibility of studying their interiors through asteroseismology. On the other hand, pulsating helium-rich ultra-massive white dwarfs could be even more attractive objects for asteroseismology if they were found, as they should be hotter and less crystallized than pulsating hydrogen-rich white dwarfs, something that would pave the way for probing their deep interiors. Aims. We explore the pulsational properties of ultra-massive helium-rich white dwarfs with carbon-oxygen and oxygen-neon cores resulting from single stellar evolution. Our goal is to provide a theoretical basis that could eventually help to discern the core composition of ultra-massive white dwarfs and the scenario of their formation through asteroseismology, anticipating the possible future detection of pulsations in helium-rich ultra-massive white dwarfs. Methods. We focus on three scenarios for the formation of helium-rich ultra-massive white dwarfs. First, we consider stellar models coming from two recently proposed single-star evolution scenarios for the formation of ultra-massive white dwarfs with carbon-oxygen cores that involve the rotation of the degenerate core after core helium burning and reduced mass-loss rates in massive asymptotic giant branch stars. Finally, we contemplate ultra-massive oxygen-neon core white-dwarf models resulting from standard single-star evolution. We compute the adiabatic pulsation gravity-mode periods for models in a range of effective temperatures, embracing the instability strip of average-mass pulsating helium-rich white dwarfs, and we compare the characteristics of the mode-trapping properties for models of different formation scenarios through the analysis of the period spacing. Results. Given that the white dwarf models coming from the three scenarios considered are characterized by distinct core chemical profiles, we find that their pulsation properties are also different, thus leading to distinctive signatures in the period-spacing and mode-trapping properties. Conclusions. Our results indicate that in the case of an eventual detection of pulsating ultra-massive helium-rich white dwarfs, it would be possible to derive valuable information encrypted in the core of these stars in connection with the origin of such exotic objects. This is of the utmost importance regarding recent evidence for the existence of a population of ultra-massive white dwarfs with carbon-oxygen cores. There will soon be many opportunities to detect pulsations in these stars through observations collected with ongoing space missions.

The formation of ultra-massive carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs and their evolutionary and pulsational properties

Context.The existence of ultra-massive white dwarf stars,MWD ≳ 1.05 M⊙, has been reported in several studies. These white dwarfs are relevant for the role they play in type Ia supernova explosions, the occurrence of physical processes in the asymptotic giant-branch phase, the existence of high-field magnetic white dwarfs, and the occurrence of double-white-dwarf mergers.Aims.We aim to explore the formation of ultra-massive, carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs resulting from single stellar evolution. We also intend to study their evolutionary and pulsational properties and compare them with those of the ultra-massive white dwarfs with oxygen-neon cores resulting from carbon burning in single progenitor stars, and with binary merger predictions. The aim is to provide a theoretical basis that can eventually help to discern the core composition of ultra-massive white dwarfs and the circumstances of their formation.Methods.We considered two single-star evolution scenarios for the formation of ultra-massive carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs, which involve the rotation of the degenerate core after core helium burning and reduced mass-loss rates in massive asymptotic giant-branch stars. We find that reducing standard mass-loss rates by a factor larger than 5−20 yields the formation of carbon-oxygen cores more massive than 1.05 M⊙as a result of the slow growth of carbon-oxygen core mass during the thermal pulses. We also performed a series of evolutionary tests of solar-metallicity models with initial masses between 4 and 9.5M⊙and with different core rotation rates. We find that ultra-massive carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs are formed even for the lowest rotation rates we analyzed, and that the range of initial masses leading to these white dwarfs widens as the rotation rate of the core increases, whereas the initial mass range for the formation of oxygen-neon core white dwarfs decreases significantly. Finally, we compared our findings with the predictions from ultra-massive white dwarfs resulting from the merger of two equal-mass carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs, by assuming complete mixing between them and a carbon-oxygen core for the merged remnant.Results.These two single-evolution scenarios produce ultra-massive white dwarfs with different carbon-oxygen profiles and different helium contents, thus leading to distinctive signatures in the period spectrum and mode-trapping properties of pulsating hydrogen-rich white dwarfs. The resulting ultra-massive carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs evolve markedly slower than their oxygen-neon counterparts.Conclusions.Our study strongly suggests the formation of ultra-massive white dwarfs with carbon-oxygen cores from a single stellar evolution. We find that both the evolutionary and pulsation properties of these white dwarfs are markedly different from those of their oxygen-neon core counterparts and from those white dwarfs with carbon-oxygen cores that might result from double-degenerate mergers. This can eventually be used to discern the core composition of ultra-massive white dwarfs and their formation scenario.

Investigating three Sirius-like systems with SPHERE

Context. Sirius-like systems are relatively wide binaries with a separation from a few to hundreds of au; they are composed of a white dwarf (WD) and a companion of a spectral type earlier than M0. Here we consider main sequence (MS) companions, where the WD progenitor evolves in isolation, but its wind during the former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase pollutes the companion surface and transfers some angular momentum. They are rich laboratories to constrain stellar models and binary evolution. Aims. Within the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanet survey that uses the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE) instrument at the Very Large Telescope, our goal is to acquire high contrast multi-epoch observations of three Sirius-like systems, HD 2133, HD 114174, and CD-56 7708 and to combine this data with archive high resolution spectra of the primaries, TESS archive, and literature data. Methods. These WDs are easy targets for SPHERE and were used as spectrophotometric standards. We performed very accurate abundance analyses for the MS stars using methods considered for solar analogs. Whenever possible, WD parameters and orbits were obtained using Monte Carlo Markov chain methods. Results. We found brighter J and K magnitudes for HD 114174B than obtained previously and extended the photometry down to 0.95 μm. Our new data indicate a higher temperature and then shorter cooling age (5.57 ± 0.02 Gyr) and larger mass (0.75 ± 0.03 M⊙) for this WD than previously assumed. Together with the oldest age for the MS star connected to the use of the Gaia DR2 distance, this solved the discrepancy previously found with the age of the MS star. The two other WDs are less massive, indicating progenitors of ∼1.3 M⊙ and 1.5 − 1.8 M⊙ for HD 2133B and CD-56 7708B, respectively. In spite of the rather long periods, we were able to derive useful constraints on the orbit for HD 114174 and CD-56 7708. They are both seen close to edge-on, which is in agreement with the inclination of the MS stars that are obtained coupling the rotational periods, stellar radii, and the projected rotational velocity from spectroscopy. The composition of the MS stars agrees fairly well with expectations from pollution by the AGB progenitors of the WDs: HD 2133A has a small enrichment of n-capture elements, which is as expected for pollution by an AGB star with an initial mass &lt; 1.5 M⊙; CD-56 7708A is a previously unrecognized mild Ba-star, which is also expected due to pollution by an AGB star with an initial mass in the range of 1.5 − 3.0 M⊙; and HD 114174 has a very moderate excess of n-capture elements, which is in agreement with the expectation for a massive AGB star to have an initial mass &gt; 3.0 M⊙. Conclusions. On the other hand, none of these stars show the excesses of C that are expected to go along with those of n-capture elements. This might be related to the fact that these stars are at the edges of the mass range where we expect nucleosynthesis related to thermal pulses. More work, both theoretical and observational, is required to better understand this issue.

Rubidium in Barium stars

ABSTRACT Barium (Ba) stars are chemically peculiar stars that display in their atmospheres signatures of the slow neutron-capture (s-process) mechanism that operates within asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, an important contributor to the cosmic abundance. The observed chemical peculiarity in these objects is not due to self-enrichment, but to mass transfer between the components of a binary system. The atmospheres of Ba stars are therefore excellent astrophysical laboratories, providing strong constraints for the nucleosynthesis of the s-process in AGB stars. In particular, rubidium (Rb) is a key element for the s-process diagnostic because it is sensitive to the neutron density and hence its abundance points to the main neutron source of the s-process in AGB stars. We present Rb abundances for a large sample of 180 Ba stars from high-resolution spectra (R = 48 000), and we compare the observed [Rb/Zr] ratios with theoretical predictions from s-process models in AGB stars. The target Ba stars in this study display [Rb/Zr] &amp;lt; 0, showing that Rb was not efficiently produced by the activation of the branching points at 85Kr and 86Rb. Model predictions from the Monash and FRUITY datasets of low-mass (≲4 M⊙) AGB stars are able to cover the Rb abundances observed in the program Ba stars. These observations indicate that the 13C(α,n)16O reaction is the main neutron source of the s-process in the low-mass AGB companions of the observed Ba stars. We have not found in the present study candidate companions for former IR/OH massive AGB stars.

Direct cross-section measurement of 13C(α,n)16O in the s-process Gamow peak

The main neutron source for the slow neutron capture process in low mass Asymptotic Giant Branch stars is the 13C(α,n)16O reaction. This reaction is responsible for the production of half of the natural heavy elements in the Universe. Up to now, no direct measurements have reached the energy region of interest for astrophysics, the so called Gamow window, which lies between 140 and 230 keV in the center of mass. In this paper we describe the experiment carried out at the LUNA experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso and present first preliminary results.

The nature of s-process nucleosynthesis in low mass AGB stars based on individual Barium star observations

Barium stars are now primaries in a binary system with a former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. Here we compare some available AGB nucleosynthesis models and the observed s-process abundances of individual Ba star measurements to constrain the nature of the s-process in low mass AGB stars. After correcting the models with a dilution factor calculated for [Ce/Fe], we found that some of the sample stars show higher abundances for light s-process elements than the model predictions. This might be attributed to diffusive mixing in the stars.

SN 2018zd: an unusual stellar explosion as part of the diverse Type II Supernova landscape

ABSTRACT We present extensive observations of SN 2018zd covering the first ∼450 d after the explosion. This SN shows a possible shock-breakout signal ∼3.6 h after the explosion in the unfiltered light curve, and prominent flash-ionization spectral features within the first week. The unusual photospheric temperature rise (rapidly from ∼12 000 to above 18 000 K) within the earliest few days suggests that the ejecta were continuously heated. Both the significant temperature rise and the flash spectral features can be explained by the interaction of the SN ejecta with the massive stellar wind ($0.18^{+0.05}_{-0.10}\, \rm M_{\odot }$), which accounts for the luminous peak ($L_{\rm max} = [1.36\pm 0.63] \times 10^{43}\, \rm erg\, s^{-1}$) of SN 2018zd. The luminous peak and low expansion velocity (v ≈ 3300 km s−1) make SN 2018zd like a member of the LLEV (luminous SNe II with low expansion velocities) events originating due to circumstellar interaction. The relatively fast post-peak decline allows a classification of SN 2018zd as a transition event morphologically linking SNe IIP and SNe IIL. In the radioactive-decay phase, SN 2018zd experienced a significant flux drop and behaved more like a low-luminosity SN IIP both spectroscopically and photometrically. This contrast indicates that circumstellar interaction plays a vital role in modifying the observed light curves of SNe II. Comparing nebular-phase spectra with model predictions suggests that SN 2018zd arose from a star of $\sim 12\, \rm M_{\odot }$. Given the relatively small amount of 56Ni ($0.013\!-\!0.035 \rm M_{\odot }$), the massive stellar wind, and the faint X-ray radiation, the progenitor of SN 2018zd could be a massive asymptotic giant branch star that collapsed owing to electron capture.

Physical parameters of red supergiants in dwarf irregular galaxies in the Local Group

Context. Increasing the statistics of evolved massive stars in the Local Group enables investigating their evolution at different metallicities. During the late stages of stellar evolution, the physics of some phenomena, such as episodic and systematic mass loss, are not well constrained. For example, the physical properties of red supergiants (RSGs) in different metallicity regimes remain poorly understood. Thus, we initiated a systematic study of RSGs in dwarf irregular galaxies (dIrrs) in the Local Group. Aims. We aim to derive the fundamental physical parameters of RSGs and characterize the RSG population in nearby dIrrs. Methods. The target selection is based on 3.6 μm and 4.5 μm photometry from archival Spitzer Space Telescope images of nearby galaxies. We selected 46 targets in the dIrrs IC 10, IC 1613, Sextans B, and the Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte (WLM) galaxy that we observed with the GTC–OSIRIS and VLT–FORS2 instruments. We used several photometric techniques together with a spectral energy distribution analysis to derive the luminosities and effective temperatures of known and newly discovered RSGs. Results. We identified and spectroscopically confirmed 4 new RSGs, 5 previously known RSGs, and 5 massive asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We added known objects from previous observations. In total, we present spectral classification and fundamental physical parameters of 25 late-type massive stars in the following dIrrs: Sextans A, Sextans B, IC 10, IC 1613, Pegasus, Phoenix, and WLM. This includes 17 RSGs and 8 AGB stars that have been identified here and previously. Conclusions. Based on our observational results and PARSEC evolutionary models, we draw the following conclusions: (i) a trend to higher minimum effective temperatures at lower metallicities and (ii) the maximum luminosity of RSGs appears to be constant at log(L/L⊙)≈5.5, independent of the metallicity of the host environment (up to [Fe/H] ≈ −1 dex).
