Form And Meaning of Javanese Woman’s Masculinity in Joko Anwar’s “Perempuan Tanah Jahanam” (2019)

This research aims to find out the form and meaning of Javanese women’s resistance of NyiMisni, a Javanese woman character in the film entitled “Perempuan Tanah Jahanam” (2019), and how her masculinity is reflected through the interaction between her and other characters in the film. The analysis is conducted in the context of patriarchal domination over Javanese women specifically, and Indonesian women in general. The main data is obtained from the dialog uttered by the main female character, NyiMisni, in Joko Anwar’s “Perempuan Tanah Jahanam” (2019) film. It is supported by secondary data from other articles that mentioned masculinity traits shown by Javanese female characters in other films. The method of collecting data used in this research is the observation method using an observation technique. The techniques conducted are watching the movie, note-taking all dialogues that contain masculinity features, and classifying the data based on the masculinity features shown by NyiMisni. The analysis is conducted using Bem’s Sex Role Inventory (1982) and the theory of symbolic interactionism by Smelser (2013. Furthermore, the speech act theory by Searle (1976) is used as the supporting theory. The findings discovered some forms and meanings of Javanese women’s resistance as the masculinity features shown by NyiMisni and how she interacts with other participants through her utterances. Female masculinity is featured in assertiveness, dominance, and aggression. Her utterance is directly conducted, yet the intention is indirect.

Gender vs. personality: The role of masculinity in explaining cognitive style

Cognitive style (reflective vs. intuitive) as measured with cognitive reflection tests (CRTs) is an important driver of financial decision-making and the rationality of individual behavior. Prior studies explain CRT score differences by gender, stipulating that women are more intuitive and less reflective than men. Recent work, however, raises doubts about such gender differences, suggesting that CRT score differences stem from gender-related role and personality instead. Accordingly, using survey data from 504 Belgian respondents, we examine which of these two individual difference factors better explains CRT scores. The results indicate that, on average, women indeed have a lower reflective cognitive style and a higher intuitive cognitive style. However, this effect is not only explained by gender per se, but also by self-perceived gender role and personality, that is, perceived masculinity. Indeed, perceived masculinity moderates the effect of gender, so that masculine females have higher reflective and lower intuitive CRT scores.

AbstractIn this article, we pursue the idea that Pontoppidan’s writing lends itself well to being read with a queer theoretical approach. We focus on Jakobe in Lykke-Per/A Fortunate Man and show how, by virtue of her morbidity, her Jewish otherness, her intelligence, her entrepreneurial initiative and her care for the children of the proletariat, she is an excellent example of Jack Halberstam’s “female masculinity”. In De Dødes Rige/ Realm of the Dead, the author has taken his two main characters out of bourgeois society’s worship of the future in the form of the young child – what Lee Edelman calls “reproductive futurism”. Therein also lies an acceptance of death and the end that departs much from the common worship of progress and future, what Sarah Ensor calls “terminal temporality”. Finally, we point out that there are probably limitations to how queer the author was able to be, a child of his time like anyone else.

This research aims to find out the characterization of the main female character and how the character represents female masculinity in the film Jungle Cruise. Researcher analyzed the film through the masculinity theory approach by Peter Lehman and female masculinity by Judith Halberstam. Researcher used qualitative method with descriptive analysis to find findings in the research. The data used is dialogue text and photo scene footage in the Jungle Cruise film. In the characterization analysis, it was found that Dr. Lily has the characteristics of being smart, clever, kind, caring and ambitious. The value of masculinity in Dr. Lily is characterized by the elements of power, courage, heroism, and leadership. In line with Judith Halberstam's theory of female masculinity (1998), which says that female masculinity refers to a woman's body that displays masculine performatives which can be seen from the way she behaves and her physical appearance.

Female virilization related to congenital adrenal hyperplasia and psychological distress

Introduction In females, congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a spectrum of inherited genetic conditions related to the disruption of adrenal steroidogenesis, is among the most common conditions leading to inappropriate virilization. For adolescent and adult women, progression of hirsutism may have many psychological concerns.Objectives To explore the psychological distress of a young Tunisian woman who sought medical help and psychological support at a late stage, after suffering from genital ambiguity and severe virilization.MethodsHarboring phenotypic male transformation at puberty, our patient attended genetic counselling for cytogenetics assessment. Clinical, biological, psychological and genetic explorations were thus carried out.Results A 17-year-old female was born from first-degree consanguineous parents, and had healthy siblings (a sister and three brothers). After a single menstrual episode at puberty, she developed amenorrhea and an unexpected progressive virilization, including hirsutism with an inappropriate beard that she had to shave every day and a male voice. Clinical examination revealed a male morphotype with an enlarged clitoris that resemble a penis, male-type pubic hair, underdeveloped of breasts, abnormal cutaneous hyperpigmentation, and a short stature. Pelvic ultrasound revealed a small uterus, but with no visualized gonads. Genetic exploration showed a female 46,XX karyotype and the absence of Y chromosome sequences. Diagnosis of a non-classic CAH was confirmed. Psychological assessment found that the psychological development of the sexual identity corresponded to the assignment of the female sex. A severe psychological suffering due to the non-acceptance of her virile appearance impaired the quality of her daily personal and social life. Stigmata of a depressive syndrome were also revealed.ConclusionsParticular attention to the psychological assessment of patients with CAH is recommended, as changes in physical appearance have a detrimental impact on psychological and mental well-being.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

Gibberellins regulate masculinization through the SpGAI-SpSTM module in dioecious spinach.

The sex of dioecious plants is mainly determined by genetic factors, but it can also be converted by environmental cues such as exogenous phytohormones. Gibberellic acids (GAs) are well-known inducers of flowering and sexual development, yet the pathway of gibberellin-induced sex conversion in dioecious spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) remains elusive. Based on sex detection before and after GA3 application using T11A and SSR19 molecular markers, we confirmed and elevated the masculinization effect of GA on a single female plant through exogenous applications of GA3, showing complete conversion and functional stamens. Silencing of GIBBERELLIC ACID INSENSITIVE (SpGAI), a single DELLA family protein that is a central GA signaling repressor, results in similar masculinization. We also show that SpGAI can physically interact with the spinach KNOX transcription factor SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (SpSTM), which is a homolog of the flower meristem identity regulator STM in Arabidopsis. The silencing of SpSTM also masculinized female flowers in spinach. Furthermore, SpSTM could directly bind the intron of SpPI to repress SpPI expression in developing female flowers. Overall, our results suggest that GA induces a female masculinization process through the SpGAI-SpSTM-SpPI regulatory module in spinach. These insights may help to clarify the molecular mechanism underlying the sex conversion system in dioecious plants while also elucidating the physiological basis for the generation of unisexual flowers so as to establish dioecy in plants.

Ain’t no man: Female masculinity in Android game Legend of the PHOENIX

This study performs content analysis on an Android game titled Legend of the Phoenix. Legend of the Phoenix, commonly known as LoP, is an otome (girl) game released by Modo Game in 2020. Like most otome games, Legend of the Phoenix revolves around the journey of a young woman who is given a second chance at life after her first ends tragically. The player takes the role of this young woman and has to complete various missions and storylines in order to complete the game. This study aims to find messages about gender presented in the game by analyzing its visual and narrative content. It focuses on identifying female masculinity in the special recruitment group of Female General or Heroine. The game characters being analyzed are the four Generals in Legend of the Phoenix—Hua Mulan, Mu Guiying, Liang Hongyu, and Qin Liangyu. They are examined in terms of role, abilities, and appearance and their relation to the concept of female masculinity introduced by Halberstam. The result shows that the Female General belongs to Femme Pretender type. It means that the characters of Hua Mulan, Mu Guiying, Liang Hongyu, and Qin Liangyu possess masculine traits (role and abilities) while also keeping their female appearance (physical and outfit).

The Specter of Female Masculinity: How Women Shaped the Ex-gay Movement in the 1970s and 1980s

Starting in the 1970s, the “ex-gay movement,” a loose collection of conservative Christian counselors and therapists, experienced sizable growth in the United States. Importantly, women played a prominent role in the expansion of the ex-gay movement in the ensuing decades, both as counselors and as counselees. This article highlights the tension that arose between the patriarchal gender norms and the role women counselors played in the ex-gay movement. When read “along the grain,” ex-gay texts demonstrate the production of a gendered hierarchy that not only valued “female femininity” over “female masculinity” but also reified patriarchal authority in the US. Female pastoral counselors, such as Leanne Payne and Elizabeth Moberly, advocated for the conservative gendered vision of the religious right. But as women, these counselors—and their books—could not transcend the patriarchal order of the religiously conservative ex-gay movement.

With a deconstructive method and theoretical starting point in Raewyn Connell’s theory of masculinity as well as various queer theoretical perspectives, this article examines the gender-critical potential of Cecilie Eken’s science-fiction trilogy for children The Karana Galaxy (2018-2019). The thematic interpretation points to an unraveling of conventional gender perceptions in which diversity triumphs over conformity. But does the text indeed break with heteronormative assumptions, or are the descriptions of gender and sexuality (or the lack thereof) more like a modified version of gender binarism? The analysis shows that The Karana Galaxy both transcends and respects the logics of the heterosexual matrix. At the surface level of the text, the genders in the galaxy are defined by compulsory heterosexuality. At the same time, the text’s depiction of female masculinity breaks with these logics. Thus, the text can be interpreted as a homoerotic love relationship between a man and a masculine woman. However, the text’s bid to portray alternative forms of gender identities seems to contradict such a reading. Overall, the article therefore concludes that although the conventional understanding of masculinity and femininity is modified in The Karana Galaxy, the text’s constructions of gender and sexuality are still shaped by binary logics.

REPRESENTATION OF FEMALE MASCULINITY IN NETFLIX SERIES’ SWEET HOME

Sweet Home is a South Korean Netflix film series featuring predominantly masculine female characters. In South Korea, films or series with openly feminist issues receive backlash from parties who strongly oppose feminism. However, this film series gained success, and its masculine female characters received various praises. This study aims to identify the representation of female masculinity in the film. This study applied qualitative research using John Fiske’s semiotic analysis. It found that there are codes of masculinity in the female characters at the level of reality. The female characters are strong, athletic, active individuals, leaders, technicians, and adventurers. At the level of representation, the female characters are identified as masculinity as they are subjects who can determine attitudes and make decisions. Then, if the women in the film are allowed to speak, act, and behave like men, the women are superior to men. The female characters represent a belief that men are the opposite of women. The women need to appear to defeat or to be more significant, which can be categorized as radical feminism at the ideological level.

On the Origin and Evolution of the Mosquito Male-determining Factor Nix.

The mosquito family Culicidae is divided into 2 subfamilies named the Culicinae and Anophelinae. Nix, the dominant male-determining factor, has only been found in the culicines Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, 2 important arboviral vectors that belong to the subgenus Stegomyia. Here we performed sex-specific whole-genome sequencing and RNAseq of divergent mosquito species and explored additional male-inclusive datasets to investigate the distribution of Nix. Except for the Culex genus, Nix homologs were found in all species surveyed from the Culicinae subfamily, including 12 additional species from 3 highly divergent tribes comprising 4 genera, suggesting Nix originated at least 133 to 165 million years ago (MYA). Heterologous expression of 1 of 3 divergent Nix open reading frames (ORFs) in Ae. aegypti resulted in partial masculinization of genetic females as evidenced by morphology and doublesex splicing. Phylogenetic analysis suggests Nix is related to femaleless (fle), a recently described intermediate sex-determining factor found exclusively in anopheline mosquitoes. Nix from all species has a conserved structure, including 3 RNA-recognition motifs (RRMs), as does fle. However, Nix has evolved at a much faster rate than fle. The RRM3 of both Nix and fle are distantly related to the single RRM of a widely distributed and conserved splicing factor transformer-2 (tra2). The RRM3-based phylogenetic analysis suggests this domain in Nix and fle may have evolved from tra2 or a tra2-related gene in a common ancestor of mosquitoes. Our results provide insights into the evolution of sex determination in mosquitoes and will inform broad applications of mosquito-control strategies based on manipulating sex ratios toward nonbiting males.

Rosa Bonheur the Amazon? Equestrianism, female masculinity, and The Horse Fair (1852–1855)

In 1853, Rosa Bonheur first exhibited what would become her most widely celebrated work: The Horse Fair. Although the work’s modern setting and animal-focused subject matter do not obviously characterize it as an instance of classical reception, the artist claimed that it was inspired by the Parthenon frieze. A significant amount of feminist and queer scholarship has been dedicated to Rosa Bonheur’s life, career, and art practices, all of which reveal the complex ways in which the artist negotiated the gender norms of 19th-century France. These ranged from her decision never to marry, instead living in households with two women, to her officially sanctioned practice of cross-dressing when conducting art studies in public. In view of all these things, one of the most remarkable elements of The Horse Fair is the very probable inclusion of the artist’s self-portrait, clad in masculine clothing and riding with legs astride her mount. Taking seriously Bonheur’s Parthenonian quotation, how should her self-portrait within the male-dominated arena of the horse market be understood? The author argues that, by classical analogy, Bonheur may be regarded as a gender-bending Amazon of a sort that was radically distinct from the scores of so-called “amazones” promenading about Paris. A comparative consideration of contemporary visualizations of the Amazonian rider trope suggests that Bonheur appropriates and, as it were, refashions this modish, gendered imagery to make a bold statement of women’s equality with men.

THU187 Genotype-Phenotype Correlation, Clinical Presentation And Feminizing Surgery In Children With Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Due To 21-Hydroxylase Deficiency: A Nationwide Multi-Center Study

Hansen: None. Background: Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21 hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD) is a common autosomal recessive disorder caused by pathogenic variants in CYP21A2. Genotype cannot always predict severity and clinical consequences, and genotype-phenotype is only well correlated in the most severe clinical cases of CAH. Furthermore, non-classical CAH suffers from non-diagnosis, especially in males. Objective: Describe the genotype-phenotype correlation in Danish children with 21OHD and identify the most frequent pathogenic CYP21A2 variants. We describe the clinical manifestations at time of diagnosis and present data on virilization and feminizing surgery of females, stratified by genotype group during 20 years. Method: A national population-based study of all Danish children diagnosed with 21OHD, combining health registries and medical record data. We identified pathogenic variants in CYP21A2 and genotype-phenotype correlation. Clinical presentation at diagnosis and feminizing surgery in females was stratified by genotype group: Null, A, B, C and D, reflecting the preserved 21-hydroxylase activity in increasing order. Results: Variants frequency of 494 unique alleles: Deletion (31.8%) followed by I2G, Q318X, I172N, V281L, P30L, Cluster-E6, R356W and insT by 25.9%, 9.1%, 8.6%, 8.7%, 6.5%, 1.4%, 1.4% and 0.6%, respectively. Genotype-phenotype correlations: Null: 98%, A: 94%, B: 50%, C: 76%. Overall, 62 of the 159 children (67%) had evidence of pseudo-precocious puberty at time of diagnosis which was the most frequent group of symptoms in genotype group B: 8.2%, C: 23.3% and D: 3.8%. Bone age advancement was significantly more advanced at the time of diagnosis in males compared to females (p=0.0009). The most frequently reported symptom at diagnosis in the genotype group null (n=20) and A (n=31) were: clitoral hypertrophy in females: 62.7%, failure to thrive: 29% and salt-wasting crisis: 22%. Clitoral hypertrophy was also present in genotype group B, C and D and feminizing surgery was performed in 85% of prenatally virilized females and overall in 40% of females at a median age of 0.9 years [IQR 0.5-1.6]. Conclusion: Genotype groups only predict phenotype with high certainty in the null and A genotype groups. In a national cohort evidence of virilization in females and feminizing surgery were observed in every genotype group. Delayed or non-diagnosis in children with SV and NC CAH was substantial, especially in males. We suggest that children with even mild hyperandrogenic symptoms and normal biochemical markers for 21OHD may benefit from genetic testing for CAH to establish a diagnosis. THU186 A Case Of 3beta-hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type2 Deficiency Diagnosed By Whole Genome Sequencing In A Patient With Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

Abstract Disclosure: S. Chang: None. C. Kim: None. 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 deficiency (3βHSD2D) is a very rare type of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) caused by HSD3B2 gene mutations. The estimated prevalence is less than 0.5% of all CAH and less than 1/1,000,000 at birth. It is a disorder of impaired steroidogenesis and sex steroid deficiency characterized by variable degrees of salt wasting, hypoglycemia, male incomplete masculinization and female virilization. Some newborns with 3βHSD2D have increased level of 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP) that clinicians misdiagnose them as having classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency. A male newborn was referred to our hospital for generalized hyperpigmentation. Laboratory test showed hyponatremia, hyperkalemia and hypoglycemia. Hormonal study showed high level of adrenocorticotropic hormone, 17OHP, progesterone, renin activity, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), androstenedione and low level of aldosterone. Clinically diagnosing with CAH, we administered glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid replacement. We performed PCR sequencing for CYP21A2 gene mutation to confirm 21 hydroxylase deficiency but revealed normal result. After follow-up for 17 years with replacement treatment, he happened to have the opportunity to perform whole genome sequencing. Whole genome sequencing allowed to detect two pathogenic mutations in the HSD3B2 gene, described in compound heterozygosity (p.Arg249Ter and c.-149_143-1766del). One mutation (c.-149_143-1766del) is inherited from his father and the mother was not done for gene study. While there have been less than 100 cases of 3βHSD2D reported worldwide, in our best knowledge, this is the first case of genetically confirmed 3βHSD2D in Korea. Effect of Prolonged Exposure to Short Daylight and a Tryptophan Hydroxylase Inhibitor on the Behavior and Brain Serotonin System in Danio rerio.

We studied the effect of reduced tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) activity and short daylight exposure on the behavior and the 5-HT system of the brain in D. rerio. Male and female D. rerio were exposed for 30 days to standard (12:12 h light:dark) and short (4:20 h light:dark) photoperiods in the presence or absence of TPH inhibitor (p-chlorophenylalanine, pCPA, 5 mg/liter). On day 31, the fish behavior in the "novel tank diving" test, their sex and body weight were determined, and the levels of pCPA, 5-HT, and its metabolite 5-HIAA were measured by HPLC; the levels of the key genes encoding metabolism enzymes (Tph1a, Tph1b, Tph2, and Mao) and receptors of 5-HT (Htr1aa, Htr2aa) were assessed by real-time PCR with reverse transcription. The short daylight exposure caused masculinization of females, reduced body weight, and motor activity in the "novel tank diving" test, but did not affect the 5-HT system of the brain. Long-term pCPA treatment had no effect on sex and body weight, significantly reduced the 5-HIAA level, but increased Tph1a and Tph2 gene expression in the brain. No effects of the interaction of short daylight and pCPA exposure on the sex, body weight, behavior, and 5-HT system of the brain were found. Thus, a moderate decrease in TPH activity cannot potentiate the negative effects of short daylight exposure on the sex, body weight, behavior, and 5-HT system of D. rerio.

A-038 An Improved Multiplexed HTLC-HESI-MSMS Method for the Measurement of Total Testosterone in Serum

Abstract Background Testosterone is an anabolic steroid produced primarily in the testicles of males and mainly in the ovaries of females. Imbalance of testosterone is the primary cause of hypogonadism in males, hirsutism and virilization in females, osteoporosis, and diabetes mellitus. Accurate and fast-turnaround measurement of testosterone is critical for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of testosterone-related diseases in adults and children. In a previous study, testosterone was derivatized with methoxyamine and hydroxylamine in a multiplexed high turbulence liquid chromatography with heated-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (HTLC-HESI-MS/MS) method. Using these reagents, differential mass-tagging of testosterone allowed different specimens to be combined in a single injection to increase assay throughput. However, interference was observed for hydroxylamine-derivatized testosterone in serum collected in serum separator tubes (SST). In the current study, our objectives were to (1) replace hydroxylamine with a new derivatizing agent not subject to interference and (2) develop an improved HTLC-HESI-MS/MS method for multiplexed total testosterone measurement. Methods Healthy male and female donor specimens were collected in SST and red-top tubes. Serum was mixed with stable isotope-labeled testosterone as internal standard (ISTD) prior to protein precipitation. Testosterone in the supernatants was derivatized, enriched by solid phase extraction, dried, and reconstituted. Specimens were injected on the HTLC system for on-line extraction, transferred to analytical columns, and eluted using binary gradient. Testosterone derivatives and ISTDs were detected and analyzed on a Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (Thermo) equipped with HESI. Ionization and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) scan parameters were optimized for maximized ion transmission and sensitive, specific, and stable quantitation. MRM transitions were used as quantifiers and qualifiers for both testosterone derivatives. Also assessed were ion suppression using T-column infusion, specimen stability by storage in SST tubes at 4 °C, isobaric interference from dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and carryover. Results Intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation (CV%) for total testosterone levels were <5% at 12, 80, 250, and 1200 ng/dL for both testosterone derivatives. Limits of quantitation (LOQs) for both derivatives were <1 ng/dL. Calibration linearity was verified across the measurement range of 2.5–2000 ng/dL. Both agents were equivalent in derivatizing and recovering testosterone from serum based on a comparison of their quantitative results (R = 0.991, bias = −3.8 ng/dL). No interference was observed in serum collected in SST. Serum specimens collected in SST and red-top tubes from same donors gave equivalent results (R = 0.991, bias = 0.2 ng/dL). Ion suppression was calculated as less than 20% for both derivatives. CV% of the ion-ratios of both derivatives were less than 15% and were stable across the linear range. Testosterone levels were stable in SST for 72 h (at 4 °C) with the serum not separated from the gel. No isobaric interference and no carry over were observed. Conclusion We have developed and validated an improved multiplexed HTLC-HESI-MS/MS testosterone assay using new derivatizing agents. The current method allowed accurate, rapid, specific, and stable analysis of serum total testosterone. SST is an acceptable specimen type for the current method. Precision, accuracy, linearity, ion suppression, and sample stability in SST were validated.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids. Mechanism of action and clinical effects

Introduction and aim. Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are used for the rapid enhancement of muscular mass and optimization of athletic performance. Their administration is frequently linked with a plethora of adverse health implications. The primary objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of multifaceted impacts of anabolic-androgenic steroids on the human body. Material and methods. A review of literature was performed by searching PubMed and GoogleScholar databases using the following key words: anabolic-androgenic steroids, muscular hypertrophy, female masculinization. Analysis of the literature. Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetically manufactured derivatives of testosterone. Given the widespread distribution of the androgen receptor, the effects of these steroids are broad, influencing almost all bodily functions. Their impacts include, promoting muscular hypertrophy including that of the cardiac muscle, premature epiphyseal closure, liver diseases, masculinization in females, feminization in males, and degradation in sperm quality. Conclusion. AAS consumption is a significant public health problem. While they may appeal to users by enhancing their physical attractiveness they carry multiple health consequences. Patients should be educated about the adverse effects of taking AAS so they can make informed decision about starting or stopping their use.

The Portrayal of Megan’s Movement from Female Masculinity to Feminine in the Barely Lethal

This research describes how female masculinity portrayed Megan as the main character in the Barely Lethal movie, and then shows how Megan can change her personality from female masculine to feminine. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach by applying Judith Halberstam's theory of female masculinity as the main topic of this research. The research found that the appearance, gestures, dialogue, and culture in the data analyzed related to the concept of female masculinity. The results show that Megan is revealed to follow the concept of female masculinity, which consists of butch realness, femme pretender, male mimicry, fag drag, and naturalized masculinity. Megan is not only the protagonist, the character that dominates masculinity, but she is also the strong female, the fighter, the offensive, and also has strength that shows Megan's masculinity. Interestingly, the research also found that, as time goes by, Megan tries to change her traits from masculine to feminine, which can be seen when she likes the opposite sex, makes friends with the same sex and age friends in school, and reads mean girl book, which is typical reading for teenage girls in her environment. These portrayals conclude that someone's trait can be gradually interchangeable when triggered by outside or within themselves.
