Vilnius University professor Michał Pełka-Poliński: research of scientific work and book marks

The article examines the books of Vilnius University professor Michał Pełki-Poliński from the collection of the library of St. Volodymyr University, the collection "Library of the Volyn Lyceum", from the collection of literature in Polish of the department of library collections and historical collections of the Institute of Bibliography of the Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine. The results of the research of Ukrainian, Polish, and Lithuanian researchers, which contain materials about the scientific activity of Michał Pełka-Poliński, are analyzed and his important role in the development of mathematical science in Lithuania and Poland is emphasized, the influence of his works on the teaching of mathematics in educational institutions of Galicia and Volyn. Information about the scientist's scientific work is provided, his scientific connections with Ukraine are noted. Bibliographical information about books authored by Polinsky from the funds of the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. His printed and handwritten works are indicated, his library work, his bibliophile preferences, and collecting achievements are highlighted. Bibliographical and historical information about books from his private library is provided and infor­mation about its history is presented. Bibliographical materials on the study and attribution of book marks on the books of Michał Pełka-Poliński are represented.

Pemanfaatan Koleksi Kitab Kuning Santri Putri di Perpustakaan Pondok Pesantren Darul Arafah Raya Deli Serdang

This research explores the Utilization of Yellow Book Collections by Female Students at the Library of Darul Arafah Raya Islamic Boarding School in Deli Serdang. The aim of this study is to determine whether the yellow book collections for female students in the library of Darul Arafah Raya Islamic boarding school have been utilized and to identify the obstacles experienced by female students in utilizing the yellow book collections available in the library of Darul Arafah Raya Islamic boarding school. This research is descriptive in nature, employing a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings of this study indicate that the utilization of yellow book collections by female students in the library of Darul Arafah Raya Islamic boarding school has not been fully exploited, as the female students encounter difficulties in understanding and utilizing the yellow books due to the absence of diacritical marks (fathah, kasrah, dhammah, sukun). Additionally, their everyday vocabulary (mufhrodat) is still lacking, and their proficiency in studying nahwu and sharaf is weak. The obstacles to the utilization of yellow book collections for female students at the library of Darul Arafah Raya Islamic boarding school include the absence of diacritical marks (fathah, kasrah, dhammah, sukun) in the yellow books, which makes it difficult for female students to comprehend them. Furthermore, the difficulty in interpreting the yellow books is due to the lack of everyday vocabulary, the weakness in Arabic language proficiency among female students, the absence of specific schedules for learning yellow books, and the lack of communication between female students and teachers in yellow book learning.

Personal Libraries in Russia: Research Results

The study of personal libraries is important for understanding socio-cultural processes that cannot be assessed by examining other historical events, phenomena and facts. The article deals with the monograph by O.N. Ilyina “Personal Libraries in Russia: Terminology and Historiography” (St. Petersburg, 2022), published in the series “The Book in Russia in the 19th — early 20th Century” by the Russian National Library and the winner of the All-Russian competition of scientific works on library science, bibliography and book studies in the nomination “The best scientific work in the field of library science” in 2023. The structure of the historical and book studies edition, the content of the chapters and the peculiarities of the author’s approach to the coverage of historiography, as well as the stages of the formation of terminology for the study of personal libraries in the domestic humanitarian knowledge in the second half of the 18th — early 21st century are characterized. The emphasis is made on the artificiality of the division of periods in the study of personal libraries in 1917, noted by O.N. Ilyina, because up to the end of the 1920s, book historians, whose professional career began before the October events of 1917, continued to carry out active research activities. This idea is confirmed by contemporary works devoted to the life and work of book historians and bibliographers born in the second half of the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the terminology for describing the history of book collections as a whole (and the collections within them), as well as book marks and marginalia in individual copies. A number of remarks on the design of the reference apparatus of the edition and the rubrication of the text are made, which, however, do not prevent interested readers. The quality, relevance and scientific novelty of the monograph are noted.

The Role of External Signs of Multi-volume Editions in the Reconstruction of Kolyvan-Voskresensky Mining Plants Book Collection

The purpose of the article is to determinate the role of the external signs in the multi-volume editions in the book marking and to solve the practical problems of reconstruction of the original composition of the book collection of Kolyvan-Voskresensky mining plants (KVMP) for the period of the XVIIIth – early XIXth centuries. This topic is considered in continuation of such issues as the reconstruction of KVMP book collection, which has already attracted the attention of our predecessors, such as formation of the fund, its cataloguing, redistribution among official Altai libraries and others. For the first time one speaks not on mechanical fixation of certain features of the copies, but on the study of these characteristics “interaction mechanisms” under the conditions of redistribution of preserved copies among different Siberian repositories. The focus is only on the signs of the early period of the existence of the book collection: stamp imprints, textual and numerical service records, specific features of bindings etc. The emphasis on early signs is due to an appeal to the earliest accounting document – “Inventory of books of Barnaul State Library, compiled by P. K. Frolov” (1809). This makes it possible to show in detail the connection between the signs on the books and the articles corresponding to these books official document and to determine the original composition of different multi-volume editions or, on the contrary avoid combining volumes that do not correspond to each other into one set. The structure of the article is determined by analysis of numerous details associated with each copy from three state repositories: State Public Scientific Technological Library of the Siberian branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk State Regional Scientific Library, Research Library of Tomsk State University. The main object of the study is records of “ordinary” and “private” copy numbers, official numerical records, handwritten evidences on the inclusion of numerous drawings in book blocks as an integral part of these editions, different styles of crossing out typographical letters with ferrous ink and other signs. The features of stamp imprints are taken into account. In some cases the paramount importance of the binding characteristics is shown. The role of external signs in combining disparate copies as sets of multi-volume editions is recognized as leading. It is concluded that not just recording, but rather a thorough study of the external features of the extant sets and odd volumes of multi-volume editions is one of the basic conditions for the successful reconstruction of the book collection of KVMP.

Archival documents as a source of bibliographic reconstruction of Orenburg Theological Seminary Library

The author describes the bibliographic reconstruction of the library collection of Orenburg Theological Seminary suppressed in 1919 after the October Revolution. The problems of library collection reconstruction has been studied since the early 20-th century; however, with mainly the personal libraries of individual historical figures or families in the focus. Many methods of reconstruction have been developed. Their analysis examination demonstrates that the reconstruction in these cases is based on continuous looking through the collection in search of bookplates (ex libris), covers, book marks or other tags, or on searching and examining old inventories, library syllabi, and catalogs. However, when the major part of the collection is not preserved within other institutions, and the catalogs, syllabi and inventories do not exist anymore, these methods do not work. To reconstruct the library collection of Orenburg Theological Seminary with the lion’s share lost, the archival documents became almost exclusively the source of information on the library collection, namely teaching and educational reports, administration’s logbooks, bills, etc.

Transformation of Bookplates in Ukraine in the Era of Independence: Artistic Imagery and Graphics

The purpose of the study is to highlight the transformation of the bookplate of the independence era: artistic imagery and graphics. The research methodology is to use an analytical approach to highlight the peculiarities of the development of the bookplate of the era of independence. An important element of the research was observation and description, which allowed us to explore and outline certain aspects of international cultural cooperation, including active participation in international exhibitions and competitions. The novelty of the study lies in the systematisation and generalisation of the achievements of small-form graphics, important historical and socio-cultural changes that have shown a deepened interest in it on the part of graphic artists. For the first time, the volume of the most significant publications prepared by Ukrainian scholars on the way to a thorough study of the bookplate heritage is summarised. The fulfilment of the research objectives is clearly demonstrated. Conclusions. Significant achievements of Ukrainian bookbinders during the years of Independence were the result of a major shift in the country’s political, social, and economic system. Cultural institutions, museums, and libraries became interested in the bookplate, which led to the emergence of educational publications and research that stimulated an in-depth study of the stages of its development and symbolic language. Exhibition activities intensified, and Ukrainian bookplates became known in many countries around the world and were duly appreciated for their achievements. Not only collective but also personal exhibitions of famous artists were held abroad. The emergence of new book marks was facilitated by numerous exhibitions and competitions dedicated to anniversaries held in many countries of the world, and was also reflected in the work of bookplate designers, which encouraged them not only to new creative achievements, but also contributed to the creation of a large portrait gallery of prominent cultural and artistic figures. The art of small-form graphics of the independence era is marked, first of all, by the creation of new paradigms and canons, with special attention paid to national themes. The Chyrów educational institution of the Jesuit fathers, founded in 1886, was an institution of great importance for the education of elites at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In terms of scientific and general equipment, it was considered the best-equipped collegium in pre-war Galicia. Moreover, the equipment often exceeded the world standards of the time. Pupils of the Chyrów institution worked in various fields: government officials, politicians, diplomats, parliamentarians, soldiers, scientists, lawyers, artists, writers, clergy. Many famous Jesuits passed through him – theologians, magazine editors and persons who held high positions in the order. The article highlights the past pages of the Chyrów college, its development as an educational institution, which was a bright phenomenon in the history of education in Galicia in the 19th – mid-20th centuries. The formation of the Chyrów library at different stages of the institution’s existence is analyzed, the characteristic features of the Chyrów collection are indicated, and the printed editions discovered from the book collection of the Chyrów College of Jesuit Fathers, stored in the fund of the Department of European Books of the Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. The study of the Chyrów collection includes the ge­neral characteristics of the institutional library, the analysis of the book array, the development of typology, and the clarification of the type and content. In the process of working on the article, we created a scientific and bibliographic description of Chyrów prints and introduced them into the modern scientific and informational space. Special attention was paid to the processing of book marks contained on the publications and indicating that the publications belong to the library of the Chyrów College, the artistic printed bookplate was described, and the owner’s inscriptions on the examined copies were deciphered. It is characteristic of the books from the Chyrów collection that they contain numerous notes in the margins, which testifies to the scrupulous study of educational and fiction literature by high school students. Thus, the editions of the Chyrów library were examined from the standpoint of historical- bibliographical and historical-biographical analysis, interesting examples of the book heritage of the educational institution of the Jesuit fathers were investigated, which is an important direction of studying and revealing the historical and cultural funds of libraries as a significant component of the national cultural heritage.

Queer affordances of care in suburban public libraries

Public libraries are more than the materiality of their built form and collections. Within ever-widening mandates to enhance social inclusion and citizen emotional and physical well-being through micro-political practices of care, this paper addresses the resourceful community resilience that insider activist and ally librarians may foster for LGBTQ + suburbanites. Turning its attention to Canadian suburban public libraries in three case study peripheral municipalities (Mississauga, Brampton, and Ajax) in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), this paper draws on participant observation and semi-structured interviews with librarians to identify affordances of care selectively available for sexual and gender minorities. Following its original usage in psychology of perception scholarship, affordances are understood as the perceived differential, functional, and relational possibilities of objects, places, and people for action. The range of affordances of care discussed in this paper include: LGBTQ + -positive space iconography; LGBTQ + Pride book displays, reading lists, and book marks; and LGBTQ + book clubs, writing workshops, and story times. These empirical examples are used to explore the performative progressive limitations of suburban public libraries.

Book Markir Application Program for Student with Special Needs at Universitas Muhammadiyah Gresik

Education is a right for all citizens regardless of differences in degrees, economic conditions or others, as well as for people in Gresik Regency. Books are an inseparable part of education. Therefore, every university must provide books as a means for the smooth learning process. One way to make it easier for students, especially those with special needs, to access library books is by using the Book Marking Application. This application is based on Augmented Reality so it requires a marker which will be scanned with an integrated camera with the Vuforia Augmented Reality Plugin. Students can choose books that are available on the library bookshelf without directly coming to the library, then the library will deliver the book according to the scanned marker information.

The article provides information about the life and scientific and pedagogical activities of the historian and diplomat Shimon Ashkenazi, prof. of Lviv and Warsaw Universities. Working in the first, he created the Lviv School of Polish Historians ("Ashkenazi School"), which did not lag behind the Lviv Ukrainian Historical School of Hrushevskyi and was competitive with the Krakow School; founded a series of "Monographs" on Modern history; significantly deepened some aspects of the history of the XVIII—XIX c. A brief review of the source literature on Ashkenazi is presented and the importance of his work for modern researchers is emphasized. Having started his career in Lviv as an intern at the Ossolineum Library, he thoroughly researched its funds, especially related to the history of Western Ukraine. The authors gave a historical and bibliographic description of a number of Ashkenazi publications, for the first time made a bibliological review of those of his books stored in the funds of the Department of Library Collections and Historical Collections of the Institute of Bibliography of the National Library of Ukraine, the Scientific Library of the Lviv National University and the CDIA in Lviv; analyzed the source material of the provenance on them. The names of some book owners have been identified and bibliological information on the attribution of book marks has been presented.

‘Pedigrees in the Ownership of Law Books’: Lawyers’ Networks, Celebrity, and the Importance of Provenance in Nineteenth-Century Law Texts1

Abstract This article looks at the multiple uses that may be made of provenance marks in law books. The article examines the importance of prior ownership in nineteenth-century law books based on a survey of representative extant private and institutional library and booksellers’ catalogues from the period. It uses this data to understand the importance that contemporary lawyers put on volumes with provenance marks and how the trade in these volumes helps historians to understand the legal ‘republic of letters’ in the nineteenth-century American Bar.

Osobní hesla humanistů, jejich funkce, formy a využití v provenienčním výzkumu

The personal mottos of intellectuals, called symbola, came into greater use under the influence of the Italian Renaissance and its ideas of true nobility, which is not acquired by descent but by education and virtue. Inspired by noblemen, scholars created their own personal representations, among the most common being personal devices, followed by emblems and portraits. The first symbols in the Czech lands are known to have appeared at the beginning of the 16th century, but their use truly developed in the Rudolphine period. Court intellectuals, university professors, teachers, clergymen and educated burghers had their own symbols at that time. Symbola were usually in Latin, with rare appearances in Czech and Old Greek, and sporadically in Hebrew and German. Twothirds of the contents were religious; other motifs concerned the way of life or Christian and ancient virtues. The content of personal mottos was most often inspired by Satellitium animi by Juan Luis Vives, Adagia by Erasmus of Rotterdam and other collections of sentences and proverbs or emblem books. The form was sometimes emblematic; among burghers, the so-called symbola cephalonomatica were common. These were personal mottos in which the first letters of the words formed the initials of the personal name and title of the Humanist. The symbols appear in the form of ownership marks in books as initial supralibros or handwritten ex-libris; in both forms, i.e. as the initials or the entire mottos, they were also used as pseudonyms. A provisional online inventory has been compiled as an identification aid for provenance research and authorship identification, and it will be expanded in future.

Book Collections of European Military Libraries of the 18th — 19th Centuries in the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences

It is known that the history of book collections of past centuries’ libraries, including military ones, is tragic: for many reasons, they are often either scattered or preserved in small fragments. Today, when libraries intensively work to digitize their holdings and search out historical book collections, it is very important to identify and attribute books from foreign, as well as from Russian military libraries.For the first time, the article describes the work carried out to identify publications of foreign (and partly Russian) military libraries from the rare books collection of the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The article considers the publications as a source of information about scientific knowledge (military libraries were aimed to acquaint their readers with the basics of military art and the latest achievements in military science). There is shown that the content of such libraries’ collections did not exclude thematic diversity, targeted to comprehensively form the officer’s personality: professional, moral and cultural. The article examines the books of the 18th—19th centuries from military libraries of Europe, currently stored in the Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the book marks in them proving the publications’ belonging to specific military libraries. There is highlighted the importance of book marks for the attribution of collections (and libraries) that existed in the past, but turned out to be scattered. The results obtained show that the publications and book marks of military book collections are a strong and reliable source in studying the history of military affairs, military science, and the history of military libraries, and confirm the need for further serious work with the library’s rare book collection.

Book marks on books from the library of Lutsk-Zhytomyr seminary

The article provides a bibliological review in the historical retrospective of book marks on the publications of the library of Lutsk-Zhytomyr seminary, which is stored in the funds of the department of library collections and historical collections of the Institute of Bibliology of the National Library of Ukraine named after V. I. Vernadsky. Materials of bibliographic works of E. Khvalevik, S. Mishchuk, I. Tsiborovska-Rymarovych on the study of literature and book signs from the library of Lutsk-Zhytomyr seminary are represented. The composition and filling of the library fund of Lutsk-Zhytomyr seminary are analyzed. When applying the chronological method of research, the classification of book signs in historical retrospect is given. Bookmarks of foreign bookstores and various European bibliophiles (XVIII—XIX centuries), book marks of the Soviet period in Ukraine are singled out. The analysis of various information resources on book marks made it possible to find out the ways of forming the library fund of Lutsk-Zhytomyr seminary and storing books from the seminary library in various private and public libraries. Due to the use of various information resources, the informativeness of the source material of book signs has been expanded, which has contributed to their more thorough study and attribution. Book studies and historical information on the role of foreign book trade in Kyiv, Moscow and St. Petersburg in the process of replenishing the library of the Lutsk-Zhytomyr Seminary are provided. The bibliological information about books from private libraries, which got into the funds of the library of Lutsk-Zhytomyr seminary, is given. The receipt of the books of the seminar library in the funds of the library of the Office of Arab-Iranian philology in Kyiv, which was created under the leadership of A. Krymsky, is noted.

Book Marks of the Personal Library of the German Bibliophile Prince George of Anhalt

For many years, the Rare Books Department (Book Museum) of the Russian State Library has been conducting up-to-date work on the description of ex-libris, which contributes to the disclosure of the Department’s collections. The main goal of this research is to identify, record, study, publish, and thereby show the variety and richness of the ownership marks found on books. This article is devoted to the book marks of the German bibliophile Prince George III of Anhalt (1507—1553) from the collection of the Russian State Library. In the Russian-language research literature, Prince George’s book marks have not been considered before. The highly valued private library, later named after the owner — “Georgs-Bibliothek”, used to be part of the Land Library in Dessau (Germany). A small part of this famous book collection came after World War II to the V.I. Lenin State Library of the USSR and is now stored in the Book Museum. On the example of the small fragment of Prince George’s famous library, the article traces the gradual appearance and development of the unique ex-libris of this collection, reveals the literary and bibliophile interests of the owner, and establishes the circle of his communication. In the course of the study, about a hundred owner’s marks were recorded, thanks to which there were identified more than 120 publications from the personal collection of Prince George of Anhalt. The article presents the main types of its ex-libris (handwritten, gift, and super-ex-libris), which are reproduced and described in detail.

Books by Professor Jędrzej Śniadecki of Vilnius University: materials on the study and attribution of book marks

The aim of the research is to provide bibliological and historical information related to the biography, library and books of Jędrzej Śniadecki. The books of the scientist were conserved in the funds of the libraries of the St. Vladimir's University, the Volyn Lyceum in Kremenets, the Berdychiv Monastery of the Barefoot Carmelites, the Royal Library "Regia" (the library of the Polish king Stanislav August Ponyatovsky). The works of bibliologists K. Taramanova, N. Berezkina, who studied his works, are analyzed. 
 The article systematizes digital information about the presence of a certain number of books with various marks, book and proprietary, of the scientist from the funds of the Department of Library Collections and Historical Collections of the Institute of Bibliology of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. 
 Books with donative inscriptions of the author for the book collection of Kremenets gymnasium, which is now in the fund of the above-mentioned Department, are marked. 
 The information resources that were used for attribution of Śniadecki's autographs are analyzed. A significant bibliological material has been investigated, which reveals information about the scientist's books in the funds of the libraries of Ukraine, in particular in the libraries of Kharkiv, Lvіv and Kyiv. Books by Jędrzej Śniadecki contain unique book marks that have perspectives for further bibliological research.

Mark Balaguer. Metaphysics, Sophistry, and Illusion: Towards a Widespread Non-Factualism

As hardly needs to be said, the history of philosophy, Ancient, Medieval, and Modern, East and West, is littered with disputes about whether entities of certain kinds exist. In the present book Mark Balaguer aims to puncture at least many such debates. He argues that for many important questions of this kind — and so for others which presuppose the existence in question — there is simply no fact of the matter. He calls this view non-factualism. After a brief Chapter 1 introducing matters, the book has two parts. The first makes the case for non-factualism in detail for two specific questions: whether there are abstract mathematical entities, and whether there are partite objects. Chapter 2 argues that there are substantial issues here, and not merely verbal ones. It might be thought that non-factualism about mathematical entities undercuts both the objectivity and the applicability of mathematics. Chapter 3 argues that this is not the case. Such things can be accommodated by an appropriate version of fictionalism. Specifically, let |$M$| be some mathematical claim. Even if there is no fact of the matter about whether |$M$| is true, the conditional, is both true and suffices for these matters. A similar point is then made about realism concerning partite objects.
