THE ROLE OF 4OCEAN IN CLEANING UP OF MARINE DEBRIS IN BALI IN 2022-2023

The garbage piled up in the ocean can be caused by household waste and increasing marine tourism and shipping activities. The increase of marine debris is an international case because it has impacted the global climate crisis resulting in the damage of marine ecosystems. Those large impacts caused by pollution in the ocean prompted many parties to make regulations regarding the marine debris crisis. In carrying out its project, 4ocean cleans up the garbage by transporting it from rivers, coasts, and the ocean, then brings it to the land and processes it into recycled products. The 4Ocean teams work using environmentally friendly equipment. 4Ocean cleans the ocean by removing around one million pounds of garbage every month. This project can help the government tackle the marine waste crisis. The method used in this research is a literature study where the author collects data through previous writings and searches for data from the internet. This research aims to look at the role of international organizations as one of the actors in international relations in dealing with the waste crisis.

Locals and Tourists Participation on Coral Reef Rehabilitation in Seribu Islands, Indonesia

Abstract Despite coral reefs being one of the main attractions for marine tourism activities, these activities are also the main factor causing coral damage. To preserve and overcome the damage to coral reefs, rehabilitation activities involving the community and tourists should be attempted. This research studies the locals’ and tourists’ participation and involvement in coral reef rehabilitation activities on Pramuka Island and Pari Island. The results show that the level of local participation and involvement on Pramuka Island is generally moderate, while on Pari Island, the level is generally high. The locals on Pramuka Island predominantly participate in the form of ideas (46,91%) and are involved in implementing rehabilitation activities (59,64%). On Pari Island, participation is more diverse; it comes in the form of labor (69,47%), time (57,72%), and skills (59,47%), and is more involved in implementing (68,95%) and benefiting from rehabilitation (64,74%). The productive age group dominates the age group active in rehabilitation activities on Pramuka Island, while on Pari Island, it is dominated by young people. In general, tourist participation and involvement in both research locations are still minimal. Thus, efforts to develop rehabilitation activities on Pramuka Island must focus more on young people by emphasizing participation in various aspects. Meanwhile, on Pramuka Island, rehabilitation activities must involve more productive age communities and integrate them with existing communities. Tourist participation and involvement can be integrated with existing tourism activities for these two locations.

Implementation of Blue Economy Policy in Tourism Sector in Aceh Province

Blue economy is a concept about economic activities in or through sea and fresh water. This includes all forms of marine tourism, coastal tourism and freshwater tourism activities, which significantly contribute to sustainable economic practices in the region. The qualitative method has a case study approach with Aceh Province as the research location. The research results show that the blue economy concept is one of the government's solutions to economic and environmental problems. In the process of implementing tourism policies that have a blue economy feel, the Aceh Provincial Government has great authority, which is contained in the Aceh Government's nine authorities, namely establishing a development master plan, coordinating tourism implementation, carrying out registration, recording and data collection on business registration, determining tourism destinations, facilitating promotion of tourism destinations and tourism products, maintaining assets, allocating budgets, forming unique teams to assist agencies. This study concludes that the tourism sector has made a significant contribution to the development of the blue economy concept, so the tourism sector must ensure that tourism-related activities are included in the planning and development of blue economy policies in the tourism sector in Aceh Province, such as minimizing waste, multiplier effect, social inclusion, and innovation and adaptive. This study suggests that the blue economy should be utilized as a conceptual resource so that academics and industry can better connect with the results of neighbouring blue sectors, understand and respond to transformations in blue spaces, and advocate for sustainable tourism in the aquatic world.

TYPES AND ABUNDANCE OF MARINE DEBRIS IN THE CORAL REEF ECOSYSTEM OF PASUMPAHAN ISLAND, WEST SUMATRA

Debris has long been a worrying problem, especially in the marine environment. Human activities and marine tourism activities cause coral reef ecosystem damage. The research was carried out in June - September 2022 to determine the type and abundance of marine debris, lifeforms, and condition of coral cover, as well as the relationship between the abundance of marine debris and coral cover on Pasumpahan Island, West Sumatra. The research method used was a survey, and the data obtained was analyzed descriptively. The research location was divided into three observation stations by placing three transects at each station. Based on the research results, six types of marine waste were found, with abundance ranging from 0.01 to 0.085 units/m2. The coral lifeforms found are Acropora branching, Acropora encrusting, Acropora submassive, Coral encrusting, Coral foliose, Coral millepora, Coral mushroom, and Coral massive, with a percentage of live coral cover ranging from 1.00-36.48%. A strong negative relationship exists between the abundance of marine debris and the percentage of coral cover in Pasumpahan Island, West Sumatra

Analysis of the levels of pollution in the Ujong Pancu Beach on Physical-Chemical Quality

Checking and monitoring water quality pollution is an important thing to do. In general, tourist areas are more susceptible to water pollution. The Peukan Bada subdistrict area has Ujung Pancu beach with a length of ± 2 km and is a marine area that plays an important role for the surrounding community. The development of human activities that occur around coastal areas will have an impact on water pollution. The aim of this research is to determine the level of pollution that occurs in the waters of Ujung Pancu Beach using the Pollution Index method based on physicochemical measurements. Water quality values are measured based on water quality standards for marine tourism purposes in the Minister of Environment Decree No. 22 of 2021. Based on the results of the analysis carried out, the result was that the level of pollution obtained was moderate pollution. The average value obtained at high tide is around 8.09 and at low tide around 8.47. Overall, the water quality parameters of Ujung Pancu beach need to be considered so that they are maintained so that they do not have a negative impact on tourist visits and marine tourism activities.

Sustainable marine ecotourism governance based on tourism preferences

The utilization of coastal areas and small islands in Indonesia is for marine ecotourism. Marine tourism areas need to be managed and regulate marine tourism activities that form interconnectivity between sectors including the conservation of fisheries and marine resources. Based on landscape conditions (bio-ecoregion) and tourist preferences, choosing marine tourism destinations. This research aims to analyze sustainable marine ecotourism governance based on tourism preferences. the research was conducted from August 2022 - to February 2023 using primary and secondary data. The technique for taking respondents used a purposive sampling of 100 respondents. The analytical tool used to analyze the factors influencing tourists to visit marine tourism destinations uses the Partial Least Square – Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) method. Based on the results of research on factors that influence tourists’ decision-making in choosing marine tourism destinations, namely: income (X1), level of education (X2), distance traveled to tourist destinations (X3), accessibility (X4), accommodation (X5), infrastructure (X6), information from social media (X7), security and safety (X8). Governance is carried out by considering social-ecological system aspects based on coastal area utilization zones, but not all of them are implemented properly, so collaboration between stakeholders is needed to support the sustainability of marine tourism.

Particulate Metal Contamination Assessment in Surabaya Coast, East Java, Indonesia

Surabaya’s coasts, situated in an active metropolitan region, threatened by metal contamination, which can be found in particulate matter. However, data of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and particulate metals on the Surabaya Coast are scarce. This study aims to systematically evaluate the impact of trace metals on the environment through particulate metal analysis. Water sample was taken in May 2017 at 17 sites, and analyzed using the acid digestion procedure and measured by ICP-MS. The results show that SPM levels range from 10.80 – 51.80 mg/L, while the concentrations of particulate metals range from 0 – 2.78 mg/kg, 1.14 – 130.77 mg/kg, 3.43 – 60.19 mg/kg and 0.87 – 7.00 mg/kg dry weight for Cd, Cu, Pb, and As, respectively. The location of Surabaya coast might affects salinity and temperature where eastern part is more affected by Madura Strait, but metal concentration are all affected by riverine input. Based on the Geo-accumulation Index and Pollution Load Index, several sites on the Surabaya’s coasts are polluted. However, they have low-level toxicity and insignificant mortality, indicating the Surabaya Coast environments is still safe for living habitat. Meanwhile, particulate metal concentrations are relatively high in several locations, possibly caused by the port, marine tourism, and other anthropogenic activities.

The Blue Flag Award in South Africa: Raising Consciences and Influencing Beach Goers’ Decisions

In recent years, the tourism sector has experienced significant expansion, with the beach ecosystem emerging as the most popular destination for recreational and leisure pursuits. The proliferation of marine tourism activities has resulted in undeniable ecological consequences, including but not limited to the generation of solid waste, noise and air pollution, unattractive landscapes, and degradation of the coastal biome. The Blue Flag certification has been widely embraced by several coastal municipalities as a means of addressing the adverse environmental consequences that arise from tourism and recreational activities. The objective of this research is to evaluate the perceptions and level of awareness of beach visitors regarding the Blue Flag award, as well as determine if their selection of a beach destination is influenced by the Blue Flag standards. The study employed a quantitative methodology and gathered data, using convenience sampling, from beach visitors at nine Blue Flag beaches located in KwaZulu-Natal. The data were collected through a structured, self-administered questionnaire. The findings suggest that there is a dearth of awareness among beach visitors regarding the Blue Flag certification and that certain criteria associated with the award have an impact on their selection of beaches. The study is expected to yield significant advantages in enhancing and strengthening the Blue Flag certification program within the country at large. Additionally, it will promote the necessity of public environmental education and awareness regarding the award.

Peran Kearifan Lokal Suku Bajau di Desa Torosiaje – Gorontalo dalam Menghadapi Ancaman Bencana Ekologis dan Implikasinya Terhadap Ketahanan Lingkungan Wilayahm Menghadapi Ancaman Bencana Ekologis

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of Bajau tribal wisdom in dealing with ecological disasters and their implications for regional environmental resilience. Ecological disaster is a problem in Torosiaje region, Gorontalo. The archipelago actually has wisdom that is empirically proven to be able to minimize environmental damage caused by human exploitation. Unfortunately, this wisdom is starting to be abandoned because it is considered unscientific and outdated.This research is literature research with hermeneutic method. This method is used to identify the essential meaning contained in the object of research, namely the local wisdom possessed by the Bajau Tribe related to their views on the relationship between nature and humans, then how the knowledge system based on that worldview is able to provide real implications for environmental resilience in the Torosiaje area in facing the threat of ecological disasters. The results of this study indicate that the local wisdom of the Bajau Tribe manifested in the knowledge system and attitudes of the Bajau Tribe in managing the natural environment in the sea can strengthen environmental resilience in the face of the threat of ecological disasters. The strategy taken to strengthen environmental resilience is to synergize the Bajau knowledge system with science in the form of marine resource conservation and marine tourism activities. The environmental resilience of the Torosiaj region is also supported by community participation and legal political instruments with an environmental paradigm

Sustainable Tourism Management in Sekotong: Potentials and Challenges

Sustainable tourism management is a crucial aspect that needs attention to improve the quality of destinations. Sekotong, an area in West Lombok regency, has a lot of potential that can be developed to support sustainable tourism, while studies on identifying the potential and implementing sustainable tourism in this area are still limited. This study aims to identify tourism potential in Sekotong as a tourism product and evaluate the implementation of sustainable tourism management in each destination of Sekotong. Data collection was carried out through the observation of four representative destinations, namely Mangrove Sekotong Tengah and Elak-Elak Beach representing marine tourism, Mareje Village for rural tourism, and 3 Gilis (Naggu, Tangkong, Sudak) representing island tourism. The research was conducted by observing the potencies of these destinations and then reviewing the implementation of the concept of sustainability. To obtain more information, researchers interviewed managers or tourism operators at each destination. The observation and interview referred to 4 pillars of the GSTC sustainable tourism standards. The results showed that there is a potential for cultural tourism products in Mareje village, marine and underwater tourism activities in 3 Gilis and Elak-Elak beach, as well as marine-based educational tours in Mangrove Sekotong Selatan. Referring to the 4 pillars in sustainable tourism, however, the management and provision of facilities need to be standardized and improved. In addition, several important strategies need to be implemented in improving the quality of these destinations such as synchronization among stakeholders and training in implementing destination management by considering all sustainable tourism concepts in accordance with the 4 pillars in the GSTC criteria.

International Marine Tourism

In today’s globalised and open world, international marine tourism needs renewal, reorganisation and definition of perspectives, including in the context of the concept of sustainable development. In order to determine the state and possible prospects for the development of international marine tourism in the context of sustainable development priorities, a bibliometric and contextual analysis of the conclusions and recommendations of selected scientific publications was carried out. Relevant publications since 1987 were searched using the Dimensions research database search engine. This analysis identified the trend in the number of publications, the most numerous research categories according to Fields of Research and the Sustainable Development Goals, the most productive journals and the network of authors. As a result of the contextual analysis of the selected articles, the need for (1) management reforms and (2) scientific research at all levels, in accordance with the concept of sustainable development and the Global Code of Ethics in Tourism, (3) clustering and externalization of marine tourism in accordance with the orientation towards specific community and (4) further development of the blue economy and protection and restoration of natural resources of coastal areas as a basis for marine tourism activities. The results of the research can be useful for the scientific community, the general public and specialists in the field of bibliography.

PERHITUNGAN NILAI EKONOMI SUMBERDAYA TERUMBU KARANG BERDASARKAN WILLINGNESS TO DONATE (WTD) WISATAWAN BAHARI DI TAMAN NASIONAL KARIMUNJAWA

Karimunjawa National Park (TNKJ) as one of the seven marine national parks is priority for marine management. Ecosystems that contribute a lot of indirect value is coral reef ecosystems. Its utilization for marine tourism activities has enormous potential but is also vulnerable to damage. Calculation of economic value is carried out as basic information on tourist willingness in terms of coral reef conservation through a Willingness to Donate (WTD) that it can be used as one of the inputs for sustainable management. The research was conducted in the main waters of the TNKJ marine tourism utilization zone in August-September 2017. Tourist data collection was carried out through structured questionnaire with 45 selected respondents. The results show tourists who use coral reef ecosystems snorkel as many as 4755 people peryear and 853 people dive peryear in an area of ​​886,302.7841 m2. The average WTD for snorkeling tourists is IDR206,250 and IDR87,500 for diving tourists. The total cost of rehabilitation of coral reefs per year is IDR1,055,356,250 per year. The resulting value can be used as a reference for the cost of repairing damaged ecosystems, responsible marine tourism activities and as an alternative priority incentive for coral reef conservation activities in TNKJ.

GAMBARAN PERSEPSI PENGGUNAAN PERLENGKAPAN KESELAMATAN KERJA PADA PETUGAS BALAWISTA

Balawista has the task of overseeing tourists who carry out marine tourism activities. Balawista has important roles to prevent and to rescue tourists from accidents and injuries. Rescue competence that is considered qualified makes Balawista assume that there is no need to use work safety equipment, but the use of equipment is a self-protection effort to prevent accidents to Balawista. The aimed of this study was to explore the perception of safety equipment use among Balawista staffs. This study was a descriptive quantitative study with cross sectional research design. Online data collection was used a questionnaire perceptions of safety equipment use. A total of 122 respodents were involved in this study selected by random sampling technique. The results showed that the average value of the perception of the safety equipment use on Balawista officers was 50,89. The majority of Balawista officers have a perception of the use of safety in the good category (69,7%) and a small proportion are in the sufficient category (30,3%). The conclusion of this study is that most Balawista officers have a good perception of the use of work safety equipment. The results of this study are expected to provide input for Balawista officers to practice on using personal safety equipment properly.

Distribution and Condition of Hard Coral (Scleractinian) Species in the Waters of Airlouw and Seri Village

The waters of Air Louw and Seri Village are located in the southern part of Ambon Island and are classified as high in human activity due to their high biodiversity. In Airlouw waters, beach and marine tourism activities are part of the life of the local community, while Seri waters tend to be high in fishing activity. This condition can lead to the degradation of coral reef ecosystems, and we need a good database on the types of corals, their distribution, and the conditions of coral reef ecosystems. Data was collected by combining the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) and Photo Transect methods and carried out at 3 and 10 meters deep. The distribution of hard coral species at the two study sites resulted in 87 species of hard coral (Scleractinia) from 27 genera, 12 families. Fifty-seven scleractinian species were found at the intersection of the transect lines and 30 other species around the transect lines. In general, the condition of coral reefs at Airlouw station is classified as Medium (28. 25%), with the dominant growth forms at a depth of 3 m and 10 m being Acropora Branching and Coral Encrusting. At the Seri station, the condition of coral reefs is also categorized as moderate, namely 38. 25%, with the dominant growth forms, namely Coral Massive and Coral Branching. The condition of the coral reefs in both locations needs attention to manage the ecosystem further.

Yachting tourism's contribution to the Caribbean's social economy and environmental stewardship

PurposeThis viewpoint article aims to explore yachting tourism in the Caribbean to understand its contribution to the economic and social well-being of stakeholders. In terms of the overall marine tourism offering, several Caribbean countries have designated a yachting tourism industry as being part and parcel of tourism development, while other countries have focused on cruise tourism. This viewpoint article argues for supporting the development of the yachting tourism industry in small islands since yachting tourism has a potentially positive impact on the tourism industry overall.Design/methodology/approachDescriptive case studies were conducted in Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) to compare the contributions of the yachting tourism industry. Secondary data sources were utilized to derive the information by analyzing relevant newspaper articles, tourism statistics, books and journal articles.FindingsThe Caribbean continues to benefit from a yachting tourism industry with prominent yachting destinations in the Northern Caribbean of the archipelago of islands. The yachting tourism industry has proven to be resilient, and yachting visitors may also integrate within local communities and support several economic activities.Practical implicationsOne potential practical implication is the adoption of policies that support the growth of the yachting tourism industry. Another practical implication is overcoming the challenges of the yachting tourism industry by adopting certain management solutions.Originality/valueThe value of the viewpoint article is to derive a greater contribution from marine tourism activities in the Caribbean. Tourism policies and plans should consider the growth of the yachting industry as an integral part of tourism development and somewhat shift focus from the dominant cruise tourism sector.

Maritime Potential Optimization in the Riau Islands Province

The archipelagic province’s maritime development has thus far been disproportionately attributed to fisheries and primary marine activities, restricting the evaluation of the ideal maritime sector optimization within the economy. The maritime notion and its scope apply to activities in more diverse fields. It accords with experts' conceptual and theoretical definitions and the Indonesian legal perspective as well). This study aims to assess the extent to which maritime performance optimization has occurred throughout the Riau Islands Province based on seventeen activities. Using a well-known quantitative technique, i.e., Location Quotient, Shift-Share, Overlay, and Klassen's Typology, we found that maritime optimization performed differently in each district and municipality of the Riau Islands Province. Based on the results, Batam is the region with the best maritime sector performance, followed by Bintan, Tanjungpinang, Karimun, and Lingga. Meanwhile, Anambas and Natuna are relatively lagging. In addition, the study results show that the optimization of the maritime sector is not limited to the creation of added value in primary outputs such as fisheries, mining, and quarrying. It also considers secondary and tertiary maritime activities such as manufacturing, trade, and services such as sea transportation, accommodation, food, and beverages, where there are many marine tourism activities. In addition, the results suggest that maritime sector optimization is not restricted to creating added value in the primary output but also secondary and tertiary.

Marine tourism development strategy as a main priority in sanur tourism area

This research will examine fwhat factors attract tourists to carry out marine tourism activities in the Sanur Tourism Area. Using a qualitative approach, which in this study also intends to understand the phenomenon that actually occurs in increasing tourist visits with marketing strategies in Sanur. Pengembangan Wisata Bahari di Wilayah Pesisir Kecamatan Pulo Aceh, Kabupaten Aceh Besar

Pulo Aceh is an island district in Aceh Besar District, which is located at the western tip of the island of Sumatra. Pulo Aceh District has marine tourism potential that has not been fully developed. The main objective of this research is to plan the development of coastal areas based on the concept of marine tourism in order to formulate directions for the development of marine tourism in the coastal area of Pulo Aceh District. The method used is the survey method and descriptive analysis to analyze the suitability of marine tourism, the carrying capacity of the area and the level of community willingness, by collecting data through spatial approaches and interviews. The results of the analysis show that there are 6 villages that can be developed as snorkeling and diving tourism destinations in the coastal area of Pulo Aceh District with a high level of community willingness. Development is based on descriptive analysis, with the following priority directions: (1) maximizing the development of potential, carrying capacity and community participation to make marine tourism management sustainable; (2) formulate and implement policies for spatial use regulations based on resource potential by involving local communities in monitoring marine tourism activities; (3) improve facilities and infrastructure as well as supporting facilities for the development of marine tourism.
