An Empirical Study of the Relationship Between Digital Transformation, Corporate Social Responsibility and Financial Performance

The article investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and digital transformation (DT) on corporate financial performance (CFP) indicators, as well as the moderating effect of DT on the relationship between CSR and CFP indicators. The study was conducted using Stata 17.0 software based on data (5709 observations) on 558 A-share listed manufacturing companies of the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock for 2012-2021 (excluding financial and insurance companies, ST and ST* companies, as well as companies with incomplete data). The independent variable used in the modelling process is the CSR rating report of the Hexun website, indicators of which are reconstructed by dividing them into strategic CSR (shareholder responsibility, employee responsibility, customer responsibility) and altruistic CSR (environmental responsibility and social contribution). The dependent variable is 2 CFP indicators: return on equity (ROE) and TOBIN’s Q. The DT index is used as a moderating variable, for the calculation of which the texts of companies’ annual reports were segmented using the Python programming language and standardised data on the frequency of keywords in 4 dimensions: digital technology application, Internet business model, intelligent manufacturing and contemporary information system; the weights for each dimension index was determined using the entropy approach. The control variables are corporate assets (Size), financial leverage level (Lev), current ratio (Cur), firm growth (Gro), shareholding ratio of the largest shareholder (First) and technological innovation (RD) of companies. The study also considered the year and industry factors. To study the moderating effect of DT on the relationship between CSR and CFP indicators of companies in different situations, the grouping variables chosen were the ownership type (state-owned and non-state-owned companies), the enterprise lifecycle (cash flow portfolio method was used to identify its stages) and the degree of market competition (Herfindahl-Hirschman Index). The modelling is based on a fixed-effects regression model. The study found that both CSR and DT have a positive impact on CFP, and that DT moderates the relationship between CSR and CFP, indicating that integrating digital technologies with sustainable development strategies can enhance financial benefits. The study also highlights the importance of different dimensions of corporate social responsibility. A high level of digital transformation strengthens the promotion effect of strategic social responsibility on current and future financial success of companies. Meanwhile, the promotion effect of altruistic social responsibility on current financial performance is significant. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the positive moderating effect of digital transformation on the relationship between corporate social responsibility and financial performance mainly applies to private firms, firms in the mature stage, and firms with low market competition. The article offers practical advice for businesses seeking to use digital transformation to maximise economic and social value.

DIGITAL MANUFACTURING MODEL FOR REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE (ROV) IN INDONESIA: A CONCEPT STUDY

Industrial revolution 4.0 era represents a paradigm shift in manufacturing and technology, which is characterized by an integrated and interconnected system to support the operation of an industry. Many countries contributed to this era, including Indonesia. As a maritime country, maritime-related products have the potential to be offered. Remotely operated vehicles (ROV) is a form of digitalization product that is frequently used to support the operation of the maritime industry. Therefore, ROV is manufactured locally to provide easier access to industries demanding ROV. Digital manufacturing for ROV can bring further contributions towards industrial revolution 4.0, which involves the usage of digital technologies such as computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics to create an integrated manufacturing system. Furthermore, digital manufacturing information system provides real-time information during the manufacturing process. According to this study, digital manufacturing can significantly improve the efficiency and integration in manufacturing the ROV.

The Impact of Industrial Internet and the Digital Economy on the Management and Development of Manufacturing Information Systems Triggering Digitization as IoT and Artificial Intelligence

Technology adoption is crucial to organizational performance in the fast-changing digital world. Due to their potential to boost efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness, disruptive technologies including data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and information system integration have received attention. This study examined how IoT adoption, data analytics, and information system integration affect organizational efficiency, productivity, and competitive advantage. The study also examined how cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, and organizational culture mediate the technology-adoption-performance relationship. Quantitative research was conducted using Amos. A diverse sampling of enterprises provided data. Structural equation modelling (SEM) examined direct and indirect impacts by analyzing variable connections. IoT usage, data analytics, and information system integration improved organizational efficiency, productivity, and competitive edge. The study also showed that cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure mediate technology adoption and organizational results. Organizational culture moderated the effect of technology adoption on performance. This study added to the technology adoption literature by examining how IoT adoption, data analytics capabilities, and information system integration affect organizational efficiency, productivity, and competitive advantage. Cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure as mediators and organizational culture as a moderator helped us understand technology adoption and performance results.

Design of integrated manufacturing information systems for reconfigurability and adaptability by modularizing the system architecture

ABSTRACT The present study addresses integrated manufacturing information systems (IMIS) and highlights importance of realizing ‘adaptability’ and ‘reconfigurability’ characteristics in the system architecture of IMISs, where engineering design for system adaptability is interested. This study develops a matrix-based probabilistic definition for the manufacturing information system (MIS) reconfigurability and proposes modularization of physical architecture of the system as an effective design solution for fulfilling system reconfigurability and adaptability requirements. To modularize the physical architecture, Design Structure Matrix (DSM) method is employed. Moreover, information axiom of Axiomatic Design (AD) theory is also utilized to develop helpful indicators for evaluating the adaptability characteristic for the architecture and support engineering designers to make sound decisions in design for adaptability. To verify the developed methodology, the MIS in a real case (Barez Industrial Group in Iran) is addressed and design of the physical architecture for this system is studied. A new optimally modularized design for the physical architecture of the MIS of interest is finally presented and examined. Results of the indicators reflecting reconfigurability and adaptability of the architecture indicate that the new proposed design of the concerned MIS is highly capable of coping with the rapidly changing manufacturing environment.

Going green: Impact of green supply chain management practices on sustainability performance.

The rising environmental challenges are capturing the attention of stakeholders of corporations due to increasing competition. The sustainable performance of firms does not merely gauge their economic performance but also their sustainable development. Since the environmental supply chain management of firms has an important part in maneuvering their sustainable performance, the present study focuses on assessing the impact of green supply chain management practices on the sustainable performance of the textile, automobile, and tobacco industries. The data were collected from 384 organizations and analyzed through SPSS and AMOS. The results reveal that the impact of green manufacturing, green purchases, eco-design, and green information system are significant and positive on the sustainable performance of the organizations, whereas the impact of cooperation with customers is insignificant. Similarly, the moderation of institutional pressures between green manufacturing, green purchases, eco-design, and sustainability performance is insignificant, whereas it significantly moderates between cooperation with customers, green information systems, and sustainable performance. The study is significant and novel for considering five different factors of green supply chain management (GSCM): green manufacturing, green purchasing, cooperation with customers, eco-design, and green information systems. Furthermore, adding institutional pressures as a moderator between GSCM and sustainable performance adds to the novelty and uniqueness of the research. The managerial implications have also been discussed.

A Textile Manufacturing Information System with Exponential Smoothing Method

The traditional textile industry is characterized by a discrete production pattern, because the manufacturing workshop and equipment are quite old, and the level of information construction is low. To assist textile enterprises in improving the construction of informatization, the utilization of production data, and production management efficiency, the textile manufacturing information system must strengthen data integration. In this paper, a textile manufacturing information system with the exponential smoothing method is proposed. The proposed textile manufacturing information system is to assist managers in making decisions, analyzing data, and providing a convenient platform for sharing information. It uses MySQL and MongoDB dual databases as data storage and uses Apache servers as web services. The front end uses Echarts technology to complete the data visualization. According to the shortcomings in its production management process, the following modules are designed around the needs of the enterprise: production management, equipment management, employee management, statistical information, and basic information maintenance. It also connects with the front-end data acquisition system and presents the data in a visual form to achieve real-time data monitoring of production. Furthermore, the proposed information system uses a single exponential smoothing method to predict production. From the experimental results, the single exponential smoothing method can well predict the trend of textile production output in a short term, and the results are more accurate than other approaches.

Effect of applying independence axiom of Axiomatic Design theory on performance of an Integrated Manufacturing Information System: a computer simulation modeling approach

To control manufacturing processes, integration of flows of manufacturing information is an important starting point. In this regard, an effective Integrated Manufacturing Information System (IMIS) which is capable of monitoring, analyzing, and inspecting manufacturing processes properly is critical. Often, most of difficulties in achieving an effective IMIS stem from a poor design for the system architecture. This study particularly addresses the problem of coupling in architecture of an IMIS and its effect on the system performance. This study employs “Independence Axiom” of the Axiomatic Design (AD) theory to deal with the problem and uses “times in process” and “utilized capacities of available resources” as two important criteria for evaluating the system performance. To verify the proposed methodology, a real IMIS is addressed, its stochastic behavior is simulated in Visual SLAM and AweSim (version 3.o) software environment, and the outcomes are analyzed by using logistic regression method for each level of system decomposition. Results of the analyses indicate that fulfillment of independence axiom of AD theory can significantly enhance performance of the concerned IMIS.

A tailor-made manufacturing information system from a shop-floor operator's perspective

This article aims to uncover the determinants of acceptance and the use of a tailor-made manufacturing information system implemented in a global bus manufacturer. A survey to map the perceptions of manufacturing operators working on two sites of production for components involved 166 workers. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) is the theoretical framework used in this study. Data analysis using cluster, crosstab and discriminant analysis, associated with personal and documentary observation, revealed the existence of four clusters of importance and satisfaction perceptions related to the use of this system. The analysis also reinforced the fact that managerial support plays a vital role in the adoption of manufacturing systems.

A Case Study on Smart Factory Extensibility for Small and Medium Enterprises

Smart factories can be defined as intelligent factories that produce products through IoT-based data. In order to build and operate a smart factory, various new technologies such as CPS, IoT, Big Data, and AI are to be introduced and utilized, while the implementation of a MES system that accurately and quickly collects equipment data and production performance is as important as those new technologies. First of all, it is very essential to build a smart factory appropriate to the current status of the company. In this study, what are the essential prerequisite factors for successfully implementing a smart factory was investigated. A case study has been carried out to illustrate the effect of implementing ERP and MES, and to examine the extensibilities into a smart factory. ERP and MES as an integrated manufacturing information system do not imply a smart factory, however, it has been confirmed that ERP and MES are necessary conditions among many factors for developing into a smart factory. Therefore, the stepwise implementation of intelligent MES through the expansion of MES function was suggested. An intelligent MES that is capable of making various decisions has been investigated as a prototyping system by applying data mining techniques and big data analysis. In the end, in order for small and medium enterprises to implement a low-cost, high-efficiency smart factory, the level and goal of the smart factory must be clearly defined, and the transition to ERP and MES-based intelligent factories could be a potential alternative.

Towards a Formal Specification of Production Processes Suitable for Automatic Execution

Abstract Technological advances and increasing customer need for highly customized products have triggered a fourth industrial revolution. A digital revolution in the manufacturing industry is enforced by introducing smart devices and knowledge bases to form intelligent manufacturing information systems. One of the goals of the digital revolution is to allow flexibility of smart factories by automating shop floor changes based on the changes in input production processes and ordered products. In order to make this possible, a formal language to describe production processes is needed, together with a code generator for its models and an engine to execute the code on smart devices. Existing process modeling languages are not usually tailored to model production processes, especially if models are needed for automatic code generation. In this paper we propose a research on Industry 4.0 manufacturing using a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) within a Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) approach to model production processes. The models would be used to generate instructions to smart devices and human workers, and gather a feedback from them during the process execution. A pilot comparative analysis of three modeling languages that are commonly used for process modeling is given with the goal of identifying supported modeling concepts, good practices and usage patterns.

Customization and Performance of Service-Oriented Manufacturing Information System: The Mediating Effect of Information System Flexibility

The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidence for the validity of the relationship between service-oriented manufacturing information system (SMIS) customization and performance from three aspects: data flexibility, process flexibility and system flexibility. We select some questionnaires from the third round of High-performance manufacturing (HPM) data to construct the construct, verify the reliability and validity of the construct, extract principal components, and analyze the mediating effect by using multiple chain linear regression and structural equation model. The results show that SMIS customization has a significant impact on its performance, and this effect works through its flexibility. More specifically, it is the multiple chain mediation effect composed of data flexibility, process flexibility and system flexibility. The importance of SMIS customization and flexibility to the organization is made clear, which helps practitioners understand the internal mechanism that affects SMIS performance, so as to use limited resources to improve system performance.

An implementation for Smart Manufacturing Information System (SMIS) from an industrial practice survey

Countries around the world have put forward the Smart Manufacturing System (SMS), and described its implementation process from different dimensions. Even though, there is not much research on more specific and further in-depth application scenarios for Smart Manufacturing Information System (SMIS). Scholars’ research on smart manufacturing is focus on a part of the production system, but there is little research on top-level design from the perspective of the overall system to outline most of the elements covered by enterprises in the implementation of smart manufacturing process and the relationship between them. Especially, there is little research on the detailed step-by-step implementation steps of top-level planning and design for the implementation of smart manufacturing system in enterprises. Therefore, a general reference architecture for SMIS (Smart Manufacturing Information System) is proposed in this paper through a detailed survey of 42 enterprises in the information dimension of smart manufacturing. Then, the implementation path of SMIS is deduced from the connecting of the above integrated subsystems of SMIS. Finally, a comprehensive case study for SMIS in automobile manufacturing industry is given. This study can provide some guidance for enterprises to gradually carry out smart manufacturing system from the perspective of information technology. The SMIS’ reference general architecture, related reference subsystems, and implementation can be used as a guidance for Industry and government in designing, planning, setting up and implementing SMIS. At the same time, based on the existing smart manufacturing system framework, it has some complementary value.

Chaotic neural network model for SMISs reliability prediction based on interdependent network SMISs reliability prediction by chaotic neural network

AbstractWith the development of industrial Internet, smart manufacturing information systems (SMISs) are faced with more uncertainties, dynamics, and complexity. These problems bring more challenges to the reliability operation of SMISs. To solve the above problem, a prediction model based on phase space reconstruction, chaos analysis, and back propagation (BP) neural network is proposed to predict SMISs reliability. First, we decompose failure data series into some subdata series components with strong regularity by using C‐C algorithm and Cao algorithm. On this basis, we use the maximum Lyapunov index to identify chaotic characteristics of failure data series. And then, we establish BP neural network prediction model by using reconstructing failure data to predict SMISs failure behaviors. Finally, we use two groups of failure data series to verify the effectiveness of chaotic BP neural network model, and the experiment results verify that chaotic BP neural network model has more accurate prediction results compared with BP network, support vector machine, long short term memory networks (LSTM), and autoregressive model (AR).LEAD PARAGRAPHSMISs are open and complex systems, human error and external environment cause the uncertainty of reliability. The threat of the external environment mainly comes from malicious attacks and the threat of the human error mainly comes from the wrong operation of the operator. Human error and external environment often cause frequent failures of software and hardware of the system or physical failures of devices. As an open complex system, the reliability operation of SMISs is very important for manufacturing enterprises. However, in the daily use of SMISs, the most common failures are time failure caused by human error and external environment. Therefore, it is very important to study the time failure of SMISs.Main points of this paper: (1) SMISs are complex and open systems, so we establish an interdependent network based on the characteristics of SMISs, and use the cascade effect of the complex network to point out that when SMISs fail, the system will easily fall into failure. (2) The phase space reconstruction method is used to restore the real data characteristics of failure data. (3) By using the reconstructed data and the neural network, the failure behavior can be predicted accurately. Compared with other popular prediction methods, it is found that general machine learning methods cannot predict data with chaotic characteristics.The research results of this paper find that when SMISs fail, the failure behavior can easily lead SMISs into chaos through the propagation of interdependent network. Therefore, when future scholars conduct fault analysis on SMISs, they should consider the chaos of the data, otherwise the systems fault analysis and diagnosis cannot be carried out accurately.

How to select suitable manufacturing information system outsourcing projects by using TOPSIS method

Modern business management depends on information technology (IT) deeply. However, most companies, especially manufacturing, are not good at IT. But IT is very important and complex to the manufacturing industry. Numerous manufacturing now outsource their information system (IS) projects to Information Service Providers (ISP) instead of developing in-house. This work classifies the critical objectives for selecting manufacturing information system outsourcing projects into benefit-related objectives and cost-related objectives and then formulates a goal programming (GP) model. Interactions between manufacturing information system projects and availability of scarce resources are also considered into constraints of the model. However, because of the incommensurability and conflicting nature of these objectives, the GP model becomes complex. The method called ‘technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution’ (TOPSIS) and the fuzzy set theory are employed to simplify the complex GP solving process and reflect the preferences of managers. A case study of a TV assembly company in Taiwan illustrates the feasibility of the proposed model.

Designing Web-based Food Ordering Information System in Restaurant

The purpose of this study is to provide a web-based ordering application that enables customers to place an order food and beverages in restaurant. This research used direct observation to observation in the field of the ordering procedure at the restaurant, the interview method is carried out to the customer, and data collected through research related to the ordering system and manufacturing information systems. Through research methods can be created a system of web-based food ordering information to be applied in the restaurants and know the customers’ perception of the web-based ordering system. Web-based ordering application is handy for customers ordering food without having to queue up.

Cloud manufacturing – Scheduling as a service for sheet metal manufacturing

Cloud manufacturing refers to a new concept of using centralized cloud computing for manufacturing information systems to support distributed and dynamic collaborative manufacturing environment. The core of cloud manufacturing is to provide service to geographically distributed manufacturers centralized services. This paper introduces a cloud based production scheduling system for sheet metal manufacturing and discusses the requirements of scheduling as a service. A genetic algorithm based scheduling application has been developed to serve distributed manufacturing lines in form of cloud manufacturing. The characteristics of the prototype system are described and performance estimates are tested.
