The effectiveness of penalty takers' deception: A scoping review

Attackers are supposed to take advantage of producing deceptive actions in competitive ball sports, particularly in penalty situations. We conducted a scoping review of the experimental literature to scrutinize whether penalty takers do indeed benefit from using deceptive actions in penalty situations, especially by increasing the likelihood to score a goal. Studies using video-based and in-situ tasks in which soccer and handball goalkeepers try to save a penalty were evaluated. Results showed that penalty takers' manipulation of spatial information available to the goalkeeper during deception (i.e., by using misleading and/or disguising actions) is less effective in in-situ than video-based studies. We argue that this difference occurs because goalkeepers adapt differently to the spatiotemporal constraints in the video-based and in-situ tasks. Goalkeepers appear to prioritize picking up spatial information in video-based tasks while prioritizing temporal information in-situ tasks. Therefore, the manipulation of spatial information appears to be less effective in the more representative in-situ studies than in video-based studies. In order to deceive, penalty takers are advised to manipulate temporal information during on-field penalty situations.

Electrophysiological correlates of distance and direction processing during cognitive map retrieval: A source analysis.

The cognitive map is an internal representation of the environment and allows us to navigate through familiar environments. It preserves the distances and directions between landmarks which help us orient ourselves in our surroundings. The aim of our task was to understand the role played by theta waves in the cognitive map and especially how the cognitive map is recalled and how the manipulation of distances and directions occurs within the cognitive map. In order to investigate the neural correlates of the cognitive map, we used the Cognitive Map Recall Test, in which 33 participants had to estimate distances and directions between familiar landmarks tailored to their own knowledge. We examined the role of theta waves in the cognitive map, as well as the brain regions that generated them. To that aim, we performed electroencephalographic source imaging while focusing on frequency spectral analysis. We observed increases of theta amplitude in the frontal, temporal, parahippocampal gyri and temporal poles during the recall of the cognitive map. We also found increases of theta amplitude in the temporal pole and retrosplenial cortex during manipulation of directions. Overall, direction processing induces higher theta amplitude than distance processing, especially in the temporal lobe, and higher theta amplitude during recall compared to manipulation, except in the retrosplenial cortex where this pattern was reversed. We reveal the role of theta waves as a marker of directional processing in the retrosplenial cortex and the temporal poles during the manipulation of spatial information. Increases in theta waves in frontal, parahippocampal, temporal and temporal pole regions appear to be markers of working memory and cognitive map recall. Therefore, our Cognitive Map Recall Test could be useful for testing directional difficulties in patients. Our work also shows that there are two distinct parts to the cognitive map test: recall and manipulation of spatial information. This is often considered as two similar processes in the literature, but our work demonstrates that these processes could be different, with theta waves from different brain regions contributing to either recall or manipulation; this should be considered in future studies.

Supporting route learning in older adults: the role of imagery strategy

Objectives Route learning is an everyday spatial ability important to individuals’ independent living, and is known to decline with age. This study aimed to investigate the benefit of using an imagery strategy to support route learning in young and older adults. Methods Forty young adults and 40 older adults learned a path from a video. Twenty of each age group were taught to use an imagery strategy (strategy groups [SGs]), while the others received no specific instructions (control groups [CGs]). Then participants were asked to recall the order and location of landmarks they had seen along the path (landmark ordering and locating tasks). Results Young adults recalled the order and location of landmarks better than older adults, and the SGs outperformed the CGs regardless of age. The Age group x Learning group interaction was only significant for the landmark locating task, with the young CG performing better than the older CG, while the older SG proved as good at recalling landmark locations as the young SG. Further, it was only among the older adults that the SG outperformed the CG. Conclusion These findings newly suggest that using imagery helps to sustain older adults’ route learning ability, especially in spatial recall tasks demanding the active manipulation of spatial information learnt, such as locating landmarks previously encountered while navigating a path. These results are discussed within the aging and spatial cognition frameworks.

Information transmission in HPC-PFC network for spatial working memory in rat

Spatial working memory is a short-term system for the temporary holding and manipulation of spatial information. Evidence shows that the hippocampus (HPC) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) play important roles in spatial working memory. Though the communication between HPC and PFC is recognized as essential for successful execution of spatial working memory tasks, the directional information transmission in the HPC-PFC network is largely unclear. Therefore, in the present study, neuronal activity was recorded from rat ventral hippocampus (vHPC) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) while the rats performed a spatial working memory task in Y-maze. Then the causality connectivity among the spikes from recorded neurons was estimated using the maximum likelihood estimation and the information flow in the vHPC-mPFC network was calculated to investigate the functional dynamics of the vHPC-mPFC information transmission. Our results showed the increased bidirectional information flow in the vHPC-mPFC network during the spatial working memory task. Both directions of information flow were observed only on trials in which the animal subsequently made the correct response, indicating that the increase in information flow predicted memory accuracy. Furthermore, the information flow from vHPC to mPFC was remarkably higher and preceded that from mPFC to vHPC. These findings suggest that the direct vHPC-mPFC information transmission may be predominant for spatial working memory in rat.

Asynchronous ripple oscillations between left and right hippocampi during slow-wave sleep.

Spatial memory, among many other brain processes, shows hemispheric lateralization. Most of the published evidence suggests that the right hippocampus plays a leading role in the manipulation of spatial information. Concurrently in the hippocampus, memory consolidation during sleep periods is one of the key steps in the formation of newly acquired spatial memory traces. One of the most characteristic oscillatory patterns in the hippocampus are sharp-wave ripple (SWR) complexes. Within this complex, fast-field oscillations or ripples have been demonstrated to be instrumental in the memory consolidation process. Since these ripples are relevant for the consolidation of memory traces associated with spatial navigation, and this process appears to be lateralized, we hypothesize that ripple events between both hippocampi would exhibit different temporal dynamics. We tested this idea by using a modified "split-hyperdrive" that allows us to record simultaneous LFPs from both right and left hippocampi of Sprague-Dawley rats during sleep. We detected individual events and found that during sleep periods these ripples exhibited a different occurrence patterns between hemispheres. Most ripple events were synchronous between intra- rather than inter-hemispherical recordings, suggesting that ripples in the hippocampus are independently generated and locally propagated within a specific hemisphere. In this study, we propose the ripples’ lack of synchrony between left and right hippocampi as the putative physiological mechanism underlying lateralization of spatial memory.

Intraparietal Sulcus Activity and Functional Connectivity Supporting Spatial Working Memory Manipulation

The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) is recruited during tasks requiring attention, maintenance and manipulation of information in working memory (WM). While WM tasks often show broad bilateral engagement along the IPS, topographic maps of contralateral (CL) visual space have been identified along the IPS, similar to retinotopic maps in visual cortex. In the present study, we asked how these visuotopic IPS regions are differentially involved in the maintenance and manipulation of spatial information in WM. Visuotopic mapping was performed in 26 participants to define regions of interest along the IPS, corresponding to previously described IPS0-4. In a separate task, we showed that while maintaining the location of a briefly flashed target in WM preferentially engaged CL IPS, manipulation of spatial information by mentally rotating the target around a circle engaged bilateral IPS, peaking in IPS1 in most participants. Functional connectivity analyses showed increased interaction between the IPS and prefrontal regions during manipulation, as well as interhemispheric interactions. Two control tasks demonstrated that covert attention shifts, and nonspatial manipulation (arithmetic), engaged patterns of IPS activation and connectivity that were distinct from WM manipulation. These findings add to our understanding of the role of IPS in spatial WM maintenance and manipulation.

Tracking the time-course of attentional involvement in spatial working memory: an event-related potential investigation

Spatial working memory is a cognitive brain mechanism that enables the temporary maintenance and manipulation of spatial information. Recent neuroimaging and behavioral studies have led to the proposal that directed spatial attention is the mechanism by which location information is maintained in spatial working memory. Yet it is unclear whether attentional involvement is required throughout the period of active maintenance or is only invoked during discrete task-phases such as mnemonic encoding. In the current study, we aimed to track the time-course of attentional involvement during spatial working memory by recording event-related brain potentials (ERPs) from healthy volunteers. In Experiment 1, subjects performed a delayed-recognition task. Each trial began with the presentation of a brief stimulus (S1) that indicated the relevant location that subjects were to maintain in working memory. A 4.8–5.3 sec delay interval followed during which a single task-irrelevant probe was presented. The delay interval concluded with a test item (S2) to which subjects made a response indicating whether the S2-location was the same as the S1-memory location. To determine if attention was differentially engaged during discrete phases of the trial, task-irrelevant probes were presented early (400–800 msec following S1-offset) or late (2600–3000 msec following S1-offset) during the delay interval. Sensory-evoked ERPs (P1 and N1) elicited by these irrelevant probes showed attention-like modulations with greater amplitude responses for probes occurring at the S1-memory locations in comparison to probes presented at other locations. This pattern was obtained for both early- and late-delay probes. Probe-evoked activity during delayed-recognition trials was similar to activity observed when spatial attention was explicitly focused on a location in visual space (Experiment 2). These results are consistent with a model of spatial working memory in which perceptual level selective attention is utilized throughout the entire period of active maintenance to keep relevant spatial information in mind.

Neural basis of protracted developmental changes in visuo-spatial working memory.

Developmental studies have shown that visuo-spatial working memory (VSWM) performance improves throughout childhood and adolescence into young adulthood. The neural basis of this protracted development is poorly understood. In this study, we used functional MRI (fMRI) to examine VSWM function in children, adolescents, and young adults, ages 7-22. Subjects performed a 2-back VSWM experiment that required dynamic storage and manipulation of spatial information. Accuracy and response latency on the VSWM task improved gradually, extending into young adulthood. Age-related increases in brain activation were observed in focal regions of the left and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (including Broca's area), left premotor cortex, and left and right posterior parietal cortex. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the relative contributions of age, accuracy, and response latency on activation. Our analysis showed that age was the most significant predictor of activation in these brain regions. These findings provide strong evidence for a process of protracted functional maturation of bilateral fronto-parietal neural networks involved in VSWM development. At least two neural systems involved in VSWM mature together: (i) a right hemisphere visuo-spatial attentional system, and (ii) a left hemisphere phonological storage and rehearsal system. These observations suggest that visually and verbally mediated mnemonic processes, and their neural representations, develop concurrently during childhood and adolescence and into young adulthood.

Working memory in dorsolateral frontal cortex

It is widely held that the frontal cortex plays a critical role in certain aspects of both spatial and non-spatial working memory. The prevailing view in recent years has been that there are domain-specific subdivisions within dorsal and ventral regions of the prefrontal cortex, which subserve working memory for spatial and non-spatial information, respectively. However, Owen et al. have now used functional magnetic resonance imaging to demonstrate that performance of such tasks involves identical regions of the lateral prefrontal cortex when all factors unrelated to the type of stimulus material are appropriately controlled[1xFunctional organization of spatial and nonspatial memory processing within the human lateral frontal cortex. Two similar tasks, one involving the short-term retention and manipulation of spatial information and the other involving non-spatial visual patterns both activated the mid-dorsolateral frontal cortex in six subjects. These data provide evidence that spatial and non-spatial working memory might not be mediated by dorsal and ventral regions, respectively, of the frontal lobe, as widely assumed, and support the alternative notion that specific regions of the lateral frontal cortex make identical executive functional contributions to working memory.

Familial transmission of two independent saccadic abnormalities in schizophrenia

Difficulties with inhibiting inappropriate responses, i.e. disinhibition, and problems with spatial memory are both presumed to be a part of the phenotypic expression of the genetic risk for schizophrenia. Schizophrenic probands are impaired on saccadic eye movement tasks which require (a) response inhibition to prepotent stimuli and (b) generation of an accurate response to a remembered or calculated spatial location, but it is unknown how these deficits are inherited. Sixteen schizophrenic probands, their 32 parents, and two normal control groups completed a delayed oculomotor response and an antisaccade task. The parents with a positive ancestral family history for chronic psychosis ( n = 8) were presumed to be more likely than their family history-negative spouses to be genetic carriers for schizophrenia. Probands and their positive family history parents had more failures of response inhibition than did normal control groups. However, it was the probands and their negative family history spouses who demonstrated impaired accuracy of the remembered- ot antisaccades. Disinhibition may be closely tied to a specific genetic risk for schizophrenia. However, a second familial factor related to the maintenance or manipulation of spatial information may also contribute to the genetic risk of the full clinical disorder.

Evidence for a two-stage model of spatial working memory processing within the lateral frontal cortex: a positron emission tomography study.

Previous work in nonhuman primates and in patients with frontal lobe damage has suggested that the frontal cortex plays a critical role in the performance of both spatial and nonspatial working memory tasks. The present study used positron emission tomography with magnetic resonance imaging to demonstrate the existence, within the human brain, of two functionally distinct subdivisions of the lateral frontal cortex, which may subserve different aspects of spatial working memory. Five spatial memory tasks were used, which varied in terms of the extent to which they required different executive processes. When the task required the organization and execution of a sequence of spatial moves retained in working memory, significant changes in blood flow were observed in ventrolateral frontal cortex (area 47) bi-laterally. By contrast, when the task required active monitoring and manipulation of spatial information within working memory, additional activation foci were observed in mid-dorsolateral frontal cortex (areas 46 and 9). These findings support a two-stage model of spatial working memory processing within the lateral frontal cortex.

Seizures induced by thinking

A patient with generalized convulsions noted that seizures were reliably precipitated by mental arithmetic. The interictal electroencephalogram revealed only a mild, diffuse, nonspecific disturbance, but bursts of generalized epileptiform activity with no obvious clinical expression accompanied efforts at mental arithmetic with a significantly high incidence. Tasks involving multiplication, division, and manipulation of spatial information were significantly associated with discharges, but few, if any, discharges appeared when addition and subtraction tasks of equivalent difficulty were performed. Tasks involving the retention of numerical information in short-term memory (e.g., immediate repetition of a series of 8 digits) were never associated with paroxysmal EEG activity. It is argued that generalized epilepsy of this kind may be related to focal dysfunction in a manner analogous to the involvement of the occipital lobe in cases of pattern-sensitive epilepsy.
