Clinical Peri-Implant Parameters and Marginal Bone Loss for Early Mandibular Implant Overdentures: A Follow-Up of 60 Months.

Background and Objectives: Despite the identified benefits of early implant loading, studies have questioned its advantages compared to delayed loading in edentulous patients. This study aimed to evaluate clinical peri-implant parameters and marginal bone loss around early placed and loaded mandibular implant overdentures with a 60-month follow-up. Materials and Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 43 patients were enrolled to receive 86 early loading sub-crestal dental implants through prosthetic guides. Implant overdentures were supported by two isolated implant locator attachments between two mental foramens. Clinical peri-implant parameters, including plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BI), peri-implant pocket depth (PIPD), and marginal bone loss (MBL) were evaluated using standardized techniques at 1, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months follow-up. At 60 months, complications associated with implant overdentures (IOD's) were noted. The mean comparison of peri-implant clinical parameters was performed through ANOVA test. A p-value of ≤0.05 was taken as significant. Results: Out of the total 43 enrolled patients, 8 patients were lost during follow-up; as a result, 35 patients completed the 5 years follow-up. The mean values of PI, BI, and PIPD increased with no statistical difference (p > 0.05). For marginal bone loss, an increase in the mean values was noted at different time intervals with statistical differences (p < 0.001). The most common complications noted were loosening of the abutment, occlusal adjustment, retentive locator loosening and replacement, and relining of the denture. Conclusions: Early placement of IODs failed to prevent bone loss over time and was associated with complications, predominantly consisting of abutment loosening, occlusal adjustments, broken retentive locator components, relining, and rebasing.

Frequency of Locator Legacy Insert Changes With Implant Overdentures in a UK Population.

To determine the frequency of insert changes for combined maxillary and mandibular implant overdentures (IOD) using the Locator Legacy system. A secondary objective was to assess the survival of dental implants with IODs. This retrospective audit reviewed clinical records with up to 12 years follow up from 785 patients who received IODs using the Locator system at a dental hospital. From these, 151 had a combined maxillary opposed by a mandibular IOD and from this, 37 had data retrieved using a minimum data set. The frequency of insert change was recorded and descriptive analysis was provided by means and standard deviations for continuous variables. Frequencies of categorical values were reported as percentages. 222 implants were placed on 21 men, 16 women with a mean age 67.5 years (SD 8.8). All patients were reviewed at least once. Maxillary and mandibular IODs experienced 1.9 (SD 2.0) and 1.2 (SD 1.2) mean insert changes per patient, respectively. The mean time (SD) between initial and first insert change for maxillary and mandibular IODs was 3.4 months (SD 3.2) and 6.4 months (SD 7.2) and between the first and second insert change was 9.9 months (SD 9.0) and 10.0 months (SD 8.3), respectively. Implant failure was 21.6% and 2.7% in the maxilla and mandible respectively. Clinicians should anticipate the first insert change around 3 months for maxillary IOD and 6 months for mandibular IOD. Subsequently, the second insert change to be around 10 months for both maxillary and mandibular IODs.

Treatment effect of implant-supported fixed complete dentures and implant overdentures on patient-reported outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

To analyze the effect of implant treatment in edentulous patients rehabilitated with implant-supported fixed complete dentures (IFCDs) or implant overdentures (IODs) on dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs). In January 2022, Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, PubMed Central, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov were screened for prospective clinical studies on completely edentulous patients treated with IFCDs and/or IODs, reporting pre-treatment and follow-up dPROs. Hedges' g effect sizes (ES) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Afterward, meta-analyses were conducted using random effect models. A total number of 1608 records was initially identified. Of those, 28 studies reporting dPROs from 1457 patients were finally included. The applied dental patient-reported outcome measures (dPROMs) included several versions of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) or specific items assessing satisfaction with Visual Analogue Scales (VAS). The overall ES was large for rehabilitation with IFCDs (1.68 [CI: 1.15, 2.20]) and IODs (1.26 [CI: 0.99, 1.52]) with no significant difference (p = .165) between the two. Denture stability was the only factor rated significantly higher for IFCDs (ES difference: 2.37 [CI: 0.21, 4.54]; p = .032). Subgroup analyses revealed moderately higher ES for IODs on two implants relative to one implant (ES difference: 0.73 [CI: 0.34, 1.12]; p < .001). There is a strong positive effect of implant treatment in edentulous patients, independent of the type of prosthetic rehabilitation. In patients seeking high stability, IFCDs may be preferable. In mandibular IODs on a single implant, there was a significantly positive effect of an additional implant on dPROs.

Group 4 ITI Consensus Report: Patient benefits following implant treatment in partially and fully edentulous patients.

The aim of Working Group 4 was to address patient benefits associated with implant dentistry. Focused questions on (a) dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs), (b) improvement in orofacial function, and (c) preservation of orofacial tissues in partially and fully edentulous patients following provision of implant-retained/supported dental prostheses were addressed. Three systematic reviews formed the basis for discussion. Participants developed statements and recommendations determined by group consensus based on the findings of the systematic reviews. These were then presented and accepted following further discussion and modifications as required by the plenary of the 7th ITI Consensus Conference, taking place in 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal. Edentulous patients wearing complete dentures (CD) experience substantial improvements in overall dPROs and orofacial function following treatment with either complete implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (CIFDP) or implant overdentures (IODs). With respect to dPROs, mandibular IODs retained by two implants are superior to IODs retained by one implant. However, increasing the number of implants beyond two, does not further improve dPROs. In fully edentulous patients, rehabilitation with CIFDP or IOD is recommended to benefit the preservation of alveolar bone and masseter muscle thickness. Completely edentulous patients benefit substantially when at least the mandible is restored using an CIFDP or an IOD compared to CD. In fully edentulous patients, implant prostheses are the best option for tooth replacement. The availability of this treatment modality should be actively promoted in all edentulous communities, including those with limited access and means.

Narrow-diameter versus regular-diameter dental implants for mandibular overdentures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this systematic review was to compare treatment outcomes in terms of implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) between narrow-diameter implants and regular-diameter implants (RDIs) for mandibular implant overdentures (MIOs). This study was based on the methodology adapted as per Cochrane. Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for pertinent studies published by July 22, 2022. Outcome parameters included in this meta-analysis were implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, visual analogue scale score for patient satisfaction, and value of oral health impact profile. A total of 782 non-duplicate articles and 83 clinical study registrations were identified from database and hand searches, of which 26 were eligible for full-text searches. Finally, 12 publications reporting on 8 independent studies were included in this review. In the meta-analysis, implant survival rate and marginal bone loss did not significantly differ between narrow-diameter implants and RDIs. Regarding RDIs, narrow-diameter implants were associated with significantly better outcomes in general patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life than RDIs for mandibular overdentures. Narrow-diameter implants have competitive treatment outcomes compared to RDIs in terms of implant survival rate, marginal bone loss, and PROMs. [Correction added on July 21, 2023, after first online publication: The abbreviation RDIs was changed to PROMs in the preceding sentence.] Thus, narrow-diameter implants might be an alternative treatment option for MIOs in situations with limited alveolar bone volume.

Effect of Different Occlusal Tooth Forms of Mandibular Overdenture Retained by an Immediate Loaded Single Implant on the Masticatory Efficiency and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life.

To study the masticatory efficacy and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of participants wearing a mandibular overdenture retained by an immediate loading single implant with different occlusal tooth forms. For this nonrandomized controlled trial study, 27 edentulous participants were selected and randomly divided into three groups (n = 9) based on occlusal tooth forms of the mandibular implant overdenture (MIOD). Group I: participants received an MIOD with an anatomical tooth form; Group II: participants received an MIOD with a semianatomical tooth form; and Group III: participants received an MIOD with a nonanatomical tooth form. For each participant, a single implant (screw root form) was inserted into the midline of the mandibular ridge to support the MIOD. For each group, the masticatory efficiency was evaluated after 3 months, and the OHRQoL of the participants was evaluated after 3 and 6 months. One-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's test were used for data analysis (P < 0.05). The masticatory efficiency of the anatomic and semianatomic tooth forms was higher than that of the nonanatomic (P < 0.05). Moreover, the improvement in the participants' OHRQoL in the anatomic group was more significant than that of other groups (P < 0.05). There was a greater improvement in masticatory efficiency and participants' OHRQoL when fitted with an anatomic tooth form mandibular overdenture retained by an immediate loading single implant than with a semianatomic or nonanatomic tooth form.

Evaluation of bite force, quality of life, and patients' satisfaction in elderly edentulous patients using implant overdentures.

This study aimed to compare the bite force (BF) between complete dentures and implant overdentures (IODs) retained by two mandibular implants. Additionally, we evaluated the quality of life (QoL) and patient satisfaction among individuals using IODs. In addition, the effects of demographic parameters such as age and sex, and clinical parameters such as implant length, implant diameter, attachment height, attachment color, and interimplant distance on BF, QoL, and patient satisfaction were evaluated. A total of 51 edentulous patients rehabilitated with the maxillary complete dentures and mandibular IODs retained by two implants were included in this study. BF was measured using a force meter pre- and post-implant in the same patients. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was assessed with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and patient satisfaction was assessed with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) questionnaires. It was found that BF values were statistically higher for IODs than complete dentures (P < .001). In terms of attachment height of the OHIP scores, there was a significant difference in the psychological disability and social disability domains (P < .05). When examining the change in patient satisfaction as a function of sex, it was found that mandibular retention satisfaction differed significantly by sex (P < .05), but there was no significant difference in the other domains. Within the limitations of this study, it was observed that the BF increased after the use of IODs. Several factors, including age, interimplant distance, attachment height, and attachment color, were found to impact OHRQoL. Sex and implant diameter were identified as factors affecting patient satisfaction.

The impact of implant-retained overdentures on type-2 diabetic and non-diabetic edentulous patients: Satisfaction and quality of life in a prospective cohort study

ObjectivesTo evaluate the benefits of implant therapy for patients with diabetes, we compared (i) healthy, (ii) well controlled T2DM and (iii) poorly controlled T2DM patients, in terms of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and satisfaction with mandibular 2-implant overdentures over 12 months following restoration. Materials and methodsThis single-center, prospective, cohort study recruited 165 edentulous adults (HbA1c<12%) to receive two endosseous implants in the anterior mandible to support mandibular overdentures. Participants were enrolled as having T2DM or not, with T2DM participants divided according to HbA1c into well-controlled (<8.1%) and poorly controlled (≥ 8.1%) groups. Participants provided responses to the OHIP-20 (OHRQoL) and the McGill Denture Satisfaction Questionnaire, before implant therapy and 6 and 12 months after overdenture insertion using Locator attachments. HbA1c was measured at the same time points. The effect of groups and time was verified using generalized estimating equations (α=0.025). ResultsAt 12 months, 137 participants provided responses. The two diabetes groups showed improvements in OHRQoL to the same extent as the non-diabetic control group at both 6 and 12 months. Patient satisfaction showed similar improvements with no between-group differences and similar increases identified at 6 and 12 months. HbA1c was not affected by time or groups. ConclusionsDental implant therapy provided significant improvements in patient-perceived benefits of mandibular two-implant overdentures for T2DM individuals, which are similar to those found for healthy edentulous individuals. Importantly, those benefits extend to those individuals with poorly controlled glycaemia. The addition of 2-implant supported mandibular overdentures did not affect glycaemic status over 12 months following insertion. Clinical SignificanceAs risks for implant therapy relative to glycaemic status are better understood, this study documents that implant therapy may offer important benefits in QoL for T2DM patients independent of glycaemic status.

Clinical outcomes of different implant types in mandibular bar-retained overdentures: a retrospective analysis with up to 20 years follow-up

PurposeTo determine the clinical and radiological outcomes of hybrid-design- (HD) and bone-level (BL) implants for bar-retained mandibular implant-overdentures (IODs).MethodsFor this retrospective study, edentulous patients who had received maxillary complete dentures and mandibular bar-retained IODs were invited for a follow-up assessment. Implant survival, implant success and health of peri-implant tissues were assessed on an implant level-based analysis. Patient-based parameters served to identify risk factors for peri-implant bone loss, presence of peri-implantitis and success.ResultsEighty patients (median age 72.72 [67.03; 78.81] years, 46 females) with 180 implants (median follow-up 12.01 [10.82; 21.04] years) were assessed. There was no difference concerning the rate of implant failure (p = 0.26), or peri-implantitis (p = 0.97) between HD and BL implants. Solely in one study group, there was the presence of peri-implant pus. Implant success was higher in BL implants with one group being notably higher than the comparing groups (p = 0.045). For bone loss, a width of keratinized mucosa (KM) ≤ 1 mm (p = 0.0006) and the presence of xerostomia (p = 0.09) were identified as risk factors. Smoking (p = 0.013) and a higher body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.03) were a risk factor for peri-implantitis. As risk factors for reduced implant success, a small width of KM (p = 0.003) and the presence of xerostomia (p = 0.007) were identified.ConclusionsFor mandibular bar-retained IODs, both BL and HD implants are mostly successful. A minimum of 1 mm KM around implants and normal salivary flow are relevant factors for implant success and stable peri-implant bone levels. Smoking and a high BMI are potential risk factors for peri-implantitis.

A Two-Year Follow-Up Assessment of Decreasing Crestal Bone Levels Around Dental Implants in Patients Rehabilitated With Mandibular Implant Overdentures.

Aim: This two-year follow-up study was aimed to evaluate declining crestal bone levels around dental implants in patients rehabilitated with mandibular implant-supported overdentures. A three-dimensional advanced radiographic tool, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), was utilized as radiographic aid in this study.Materials & Methods: A total of 15 patients wearing mandibular implants supported overdentures were studied for two years. Randomization and strict inclusion/exclusion criteria were followed during study execution. Complete dentures were fabricated with standard methods, which were later anchored by a bilateral implant in the mandibular jaw. Bone loss at all four surfaces in all studied implants was estimated by the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) technique. These assessments were done at postoperative follow-up periods of six, 12, 18, and 24 months. Duly signed and informed consent was obtained from all participating patients.Statistical Analysis and Results: The statistical analysis was completed by the software IBM Corp. Released 2013. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp. All relevant data was entered into it to be analyzed with suitable statistical tests. Out of all 15 studied patients, 11 were male, and four were female. P-value was very significant for the age range 35-40 years (0.01). In all instances, the lingual surface showed minimum, while the distal surface showed maximum bone loss when seen at all postoperative phases. Grossly, the mean bone loss ranged between 0.14-0.45. P-value was highly significant for the measurements made at the lingual and distal sides of implants (for both B and D positions). A comparison of both study groups by one-way ANOVA confirmed a highly significant p-value for estimations done between the groups (0.001).Conclusion: Within the limitations of the study, the authors confirmed that crestal bone levels showed a clear decreasing pattern in the postoperative phases. Since these deleterious processes can compromise long-term prosthesis success, operators should consider all these facts while planning to implant an overdenture prosthesis in the lower jaw.

Prosthetic complications and maintenance of different attachments used to stabilize mandibular 2-implant overdentures in patients with atrophied ridges. A 5-year randomized controlled clinical trial.

This randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate prosthetic complications and maintenance of different attachments used to stabilize mandibular 2-implant overdentures in patients with atrophied ridges. Ninety edentulous patients with a maladaptive capacity of wearing conventional dentures due to mandibular ridge atrophy received 2-implants in the canine regions using computer-guided surgery. The patients were randomly assigned into three groups; (1) Bar group: overdentures were connected to the implants with bar/clip attachments, (2) Telescopic group: overdentures were connected to the implants using a resilient telescopic attachment, and (3) Stud group: overdentures were connected to the implants with resilient stud (Locator) attachments. Prosthetic complications of attachments, mandibular overdentures, and maxillary dentures, and soft tissue complications of mandibular overdentures and maxillary dentures were evaluated 1 year (T1), 3 years (T3), and 5 years (T5) after denture insertion. The majority of prosthetic and soft tissue complications for all groups occurred in the first year. The most frequent prosthetic complication was wear/distortion of retentive components of locator and telescopic attachments and activation of clips of bar attachment. The bar group showed the highest incidence of overdenture relines, fractures, hyperplasia, maxillary denture mucositis, and soreness. The telescopic group showed the highest incidence of screw loosening, teeth wear/fracture, maxillary denture relines, fractures, teeth wear, teeth separation, and flappy ridges. The stud group recorded the highest incidence of wear and replacement of retentive components. For 2-implant overdentures in patients with atrophied mandibles, bar attachments showed the highest incidence of complications related to mandibular overdentures, telescopic attachments showed the highest incidence of complications related to maxillary dentures, and stud attachments showed the highest incidence of complications related to the attachment components.

Retention of Different Attachment Systems for Digitally Designed Mandibular Implant Overdenture.

Primary retention and gradual loss of retention of different attachment systems are important key factors in proper attachment selection; however, studies on attachment retention show a wide range of retention values concerning the same attachment system. This in vitro study uses a novel approach that utilizes a digitally designed and 3D-printed reinforced overdenture, which has a digitally determined geometric center, in order to standardize results for future research and clinical work. This study aims to evaluate initial retention along with the gradual loss of retention at different time intervals between three types of stud attachments, retaining a digitally designed, reinforced mandibular overdenture after 5475 cycles simulating 5 years of attachment usage. An epoxy model of an ACP Class I (American College of Prosthodontists) edentulous mandible was constructed. A fully computer-designed surgical guide was employed after virtual denture design to place two implants according to prosthetically driven implant placement protocol. A metal meshwork with tissue stops was designed digitally to reinforce the denture and to carry the geometric center. The meshwork was incorporated into the denture-intaglio surface, which was planned for attachment pickup. Forty-eight digitally designed and metal-reinforced 3D-printed dentures were divided into four groups (12 dentures for each group). Loss of retention was measured to compare two novel Locator attachments (12 pairs of Locator R-TX, 12 pairs of Locator F-TX medium and low retention, with 12 pairs of ball and socket). Each group was subjected to an insertion and removal fatigue test resembling 5 years of patient usage. Retention values were recorded using a universal testing machine. Locator F-TX medium and low retention showed loss of retention by 91.93% and 92.91%, after fatigue testing equivalent to 2 and 3 years of use, respectively. Ball and socket and Locator R-TX showed loss of retention by 19.87% and 26.31%, respectively, after fatigue testing equivalent to 5 years of use. Locator R-TX attachment systems showed promising retention for implant overdentures compared to ball and socket attachments. The proposed digital technique of denture reinforcement is capable of standardizing results for research and clinical work.

Using Different Low-Profile Abutments for Assisting Mandibular Implant Overdenture: A Split-Mouth Study.

Background Using a pair of different low-profile abutments to assist mandibular implant overdenture (MIOD) in limited restorative space is questionable due to the different morphology. Objective To investigate the marginal bone level (MBL) change and peri-implant-tissue health (PITH) around a pair of OT Equator® and Locator® suprastructures assisting MIOD. Methods Seventeen edentulous patients received MIOD assisted by OT Equator® and Locator®. MBL change was investigated at the implant loading (T1), after six months (T2) and twelve months (T3) of implant loading. PITH was evaluated at T2 and T3. Results There was within abutment significant difference in MBL change after T2 and T3 of loading for Locator (0.05 ± 0.02 and 0.32 ± 0.08, respectively) (P=0.01); and for Equator (0.11 ± 0.08 and 0.21 ± 0.09, respectively) (P=0.01). Also, there was a significant difference between Locator and Equator on the modified plaque index (MPI) after T3 (P=0.01). The significant results were recorded for the MPI at T2 and T3 for Locator (0.92 ± 0.26 and 1.5 ± 0.51, respectively) (P=0.01) and for Equator (0.82 ± 0.26 and 1.42 ± 0.51, respectively) (P=0.003). For modified bleeding index, there was significant difference at T2 and T3 for Locator (0.57 ± 0.19 and 1.14 ± 0.41, respectively) (P=0.03) and for Equator (0.46 ± 0.22 and 1.07 ± 0.41, respectively) (P=0.01). For gingival index, there was significant difference at T2 and T3 for Locator (0.57 ± 0.11 and 1.28 ± 0.35, respectively) (P=0.001) and for Equator (0.35 ± 0.21 and 1.1 ± 0.46, respectively) (P=0.001). Conclusions Using different pairs of the low-profile OT Equator® and Locator® abutments to assist MIOD is clinically acceptable based on the MBL change and PITH outcomes.

Effect of Posterior Residual Ridge Resorption and Relining for Mandibular Implant Overdentures on Bending Strain Around Implants.

To examine the influence of posterior residual ridge resorption (PRRR) and relining on bending strain around implants under an overdenture. Maxillary and mandibular edentulous models were made and covered with white silicone. Four strain gauges were placed on four sides of each implant. Two tissue-level implants were placed bilaterally in the part between the lateral incisors and canines of the mandible. A maxillary conventional denture and a mandibular overdenture were fabricated to fit the models. Three levels of bone resorption around the implant were created: 0, 0.8, and 1.5 mm. The surface of the residual ridge was uniformly removed from the area near the distal side of the implant to the retromolar section, and three levels of PRRR were created (0, 1, and 1.5 mm). After the measurement, the experimental denture of the PRRR of 1 mm and 1.5 mm were relined. Locator attachments were used. A 98-N occlusal force was applied, and bending strains around the implant were measured. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Bonferroni correction were employed to analyze the data. Without relining, at each bone resorption level around the implant, the bending strain was smallest with PRRR of 0 mm and largest with PRRR of 1.5 mm. The bending strain after relining was smaller than the bending strain with ridge resorption. Bending strains after relining were smaller than bending strains with no ridge resorption, but there was no significant difference in bending strain between these three groups. As PRRR increased, the bending strain increased without relining. As bone resorption around the implant progressed, PRRR enhanced the increase in the peri-implant bending strain. Bending strain was reduced when relining was performed.

A comparative study was done regarding patient satisfaction between telescopic retained implant supported and retained over-denture prosthesis on four implants and a screw retained hybrid prosthesis rehabilitation also retained by four implants in patients with a completely edentulous mandible. Twenty patients were evaluated in this study, split into two groups. Regarding the evaluation of the patient satisfaction it was tested using a quantitative method, by asking the twenty patients different questions in a questionnaire. After an appropriate follow –up period from 2 weeks, to 12 months in both groups (telescopic retained overdenture and screw retained hybrid restoration), the results revealed the following; there was no statistically significant difference after 3 months as well as from 3 to 6 months and also from 6 to 9 months. Also there was a none statistically significant difference from 9 to 12 months, regarding patient satisfaction. In conclusion patients were equally satisfied with both prosthetic options.

Mandibular residual ridge morphology in relation to complete dentures and implant overdentures-Part II: Predictors for effectiveness of implant overdenture therapy.

The significance of mandibular residual ridge height and satisfaction with conventional complete dentures (CCD) as predictors for the added value of implant-overdenture (IOD) therapy is unknown. To investigate the predictive value of thresholds for (1) residual ridge height at premolar location (PRH), and (2) satisfaction with CCD-stability for the added value of two intraforaminal implants supporting the mandibular CCD. Thirty CCD wearing patients (67.9 ± 7.0 years) for whom a new CCD was advised, received a new CCD. Mandibular gypsum models were digitally measured. After 3 months free of complaints (T1), perceived CCD-stability was evaluated, and participants received two intraforaminal implants. At T1 and T2 (3 months free of complaints after IOD therapy) participants completed OHIP14-CN, and denture satisfaction (VAS) questionnaires, and performed mixing ability tests. Participants were grouped according to PRH of ≥6.15 mm versus < 6.15 mm, and perceived CCD-stability satisfied vs. dissatisfied. Scores at T2 were compared to T1 (paired t-tests). Predictive values of PRH and CCD-stability were analyzed with logistic multivariate regression models. At T2, only participants with PRH of <6.15 mm or dissatisfied with CCD-stability had significant lower OHIP-total and domain scores for 'physical pain' and 'physical disability' and significantly higher VAS scores for perceived chewing function, denture retention and oral comfort. Regression analyses showed that participants with PRH of <6.15 mm, or dissatisfied with CCD-stability had significantly higher chance for lower OHIP-total and domain scores 'physical pain' and 'physical disability', and for higher VAS scores for perceived chewing function, denture retention and oral comfort at T2. Masticatory performance improved significantly after IOD therapy, but independent of PRH and CCD-stability. PRH and satisfaction with CCD-stability were adequate prognostic indicators for improvement of oral health-related quality of life and denture satisfaction by mandibular IOD therapy.
