Influence of COVID-19 pandemic on mandible fracture patterns in a German cranio-maxillofacial trauma center: PreCOVID (2019) versus IntraCOVID (2020).

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease-2019) pandemic confronted the global healthcare system with a variety of challenges. The pandemic and the associated lockdowns also had an impact on multiple medical disciplines (i.e. delay of surgery, change of hospital admissions). The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mandible fracture patterns/distributions and circumstances in a German cranio-maxillofacial trauma center. This retrospective study compared the mandible fracture patterns of patients in the PreCOVID (PC) era (February 2019-January 2020) with patients in the IntraCOVID (IC) era (February 2020-January 2021). In addition to baseline characteristics, the number/type of mandible fractures, location of the mandible fracture, circumstances leading to mandible fracture, and hospital admissions/treatments were analyzed. A total of 127 patients was included in this study. In the IC period, the absolute frequencies of mandible fractures decreased (PC = 72 vs. IC = 55). There were minor changes in the mandible fracture locations. An increase of concomitant facial soft tissue injuries (IC = 69.1% vs. PC = 58.3%), as well as higher rates of traumatic tooth loss (IC = 32.7% vs. PC = 22.2%), was observed. Regarding the causes/accidents leading to mandible fractures, there were significant increases in falls and significant decreases in sports accidents as well as interpersonal violence during the IC period. A significant increase in accidents at home and domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a simultaneous decrease in weekend and night-time trauma leading to mandible fractures was observed. Furthermore, a significant increase in days from trauma to surgery was recorded. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on mandibular fracture patterns. The locations and types of mandibular fractures changed slightly. However, significant differences in the circumstances leading to mandible fractures (increased falls, decreased interpersonal violence) were recorded.

Patterns of Mandibular Fractures through Human Aggression: A 10-Year Cross-Sectional Cohort Retrospective Study.

The World Health Organization considers the victims of interpersonal violence to be a medical priority. In order to provide services at the highest level, we aimed to evaluate the patterns of maxillofacial fractures caused by interpersonal violence, in order to treat, counsel and guide these patients. This retrospective study was conducted in 478 patients with mandibular fractures caused by interpersonal violence over 10 years in a university clinic. The most affected were male patients (95.19%), 20-29 years of age (46.86%), under the influence of alcohol (83.26%) and without education (43.9%). The majority of mandibular fractures were displaced (89.3%) and intraorally open (64.0%). The most frequent location was the mandibular angle (34.84%). The most frequent soft tissue lesions were hematomas (45.04%) and abrasions (34.71%), being associated frequently with closed (p = 0.945/p = 0.237), displaced (p = 0.001/p = 0.002), single angle fractures (p = 0.081/p = 0.222). Educating the population and fighting alcohol consumption would decrease the occurrence of mandibular fractures through aggression. Clinical diagnosis should be made, keeping in mind that the severity of associated soft tissue lesions is directly proportional to the pattern and number of underlying fracture lines.

Trends in mandibular fractures in the USA: A 20-year retrospective analysis.

The mandible is one of the most fractured bones in the maxillofacial region. This study analyzes trends in mandibular fracture patterns, demographics, and mechanisms since the early 2000s. Mandibular fractures were reviewed from the 2007, 2011, and 2017 National Trauma Data Bank including 13,142, 17,057, and 20,391 patients by year, respectively. This database contains hundreds of thousands of patients annually and represents the largest trauma registry in the United States. Variables included number of fractures, sex, age, injury mechanism, and fracture location. Mechanism of injury included assault, motor vehicle crash, fall, motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian, and firearm. Anatomic locations based on ICD-9/10 codes included symphysis, ramus, condyle, condylar process, body, angle, and coronoid process. Frequencies were compared using Chi-square tests of homogeneity with effect sizes estimated using Cramer's V. Mandibular fractures represent 2%-2.5% of all traumas reported in the database from 2001 to 2017. The proportion of patients sustaining a single reported mandibular fracture decreased from 82% in 2007 to 63% in 2017. Males consistently experienced 78%-80% of fractures. Eighteen to 54-year-olds experienced the largest percentages of fractures throughout the 21st century, while median age of fracture shifted from 28 to 32 between 2007 and 2017. The most common fracture mechanisms were assault (42% [2001-2005]-37% [2017]), motor vehicle crash (31%-22%) followed by falls (15%-20%). From 2001-2005 to 2017, a decrease was observed in assaults (-5%) and motor vehicle crash (-9%) and an increase in falls (+5%), particularly among elderly females. The mandibular body, condyle, angle, and symphysis represent approximately two-thirds of all fractures without a consistent temporal trend among them. The temporal trends observed can be linked to shifting age demographics nationally that may aid clinicians in diagnosis and inform public safety policies aimed at reducing these injuries, particularly among the growing elderly population.

Assessment of pattern of mandibular fractures in a known population

Background: To assess the pattern of mandibular fractures in a known population. Materials & methods: A total of 100 patients were enrolled. The number of male patients was 75 and 25 were female. Age of patients was 20 to 60 years. Mean age of patient was 40.45 years. Patients were examined clinically and radiographically in the outpatient departments of the hospital, and a detailed history was taken. The data was analyzed and result was obtained using SPSS software. The level of significance was at P < 0.05. Results: The mandibular condyle was the most common site of fracture in this study found in a vast majority of trauma patients (n = 42, 42.5%) involving 36 males and 6 females followed by the mandibular angle (20.6%), parasymphysis (12.5%) and dentoalveolar. Majority of patients (n = 49, 49%) had unilateral type of mandibular fractures followed by 35 (35%) patients with bilateral fractures. Conclusion: Frequency of unilateral fractures was higher.

Occurrence and pattern of mandibular fractures in maxillofacial trauma of Kerala population

Objectives: Fracture of the mandible may affect a single anatomic site or frequently several sites concurrently and road traffic accidents (RTA) play a prominent role. The aim of this study was to analyze the patient demographics, etiology, pattern, and types of mandibular fractures in three northern districts of Kerala. Methodology: 81 patients with sustaining mandibular fractures who visited the Emergency Department of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Government Dental College, Thrissur, Kerala were recruited and evaluated retrospectively. The variables analyzed in the study were age, gender, etiology, fracture site, pattern, and types of fractures. The data were statistically analyzed using the Chi-square test to determine the association between the variables. Results: The study included 104 fractures in 81 patients. The ratio of males to females was 7.1:1. The highest fracture prevalence were observed in adults (88.9%) and the least in children under 12 years of age. RTA was the common cause (60.5%) followed by assault (27.2%). The most commonly reported fracture site was parasymphysis (24%), and the condyle (20.2%). The compound fractures were frequently observed (72%) and comminuted fractures (4%) were the least. A highly significant association was identified between the anatomic site and the severity of fracture types.

Evaluation of patterns in mandibular fractures among South Indian patients.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the predicted mandibular fracture pattern among a sample of patients visiting a dental hospital in Chennai, India based on patient demographics. This retrospective analysis involved 46 patients out of which 39 were male and 7 were female who were referred to the Oral Surgery Clinic, Chennai. The medical records and orthopantograms for these 46 patients who received treatment for fractures of the mandible from June 2019- March 2020 were reviewed. Parameters such as age, gender, pattern of distribution, type of mandibular fracture, combination of the fracture and treatment done, were evaluated and assessed by one examiner and reviewed by 2 independent investigators. Data shows that the angle region to be the most common area to be affected (31.67%), accompanied by parasymphyseal region (28.33%), condylar region (13.33%), dento-alveolar region ( 10%), body (8.33%), symphyseal region ( 6.67%) and finally the coronoid region ( 1.67%). Data analysis also revealed that 84.78% of all patients with fractures of the mandible were male and 34.78% of all patients were in the age group of 21-30 years. Most fractures presented with a single fracture site (60.87%), and among combinations of fractures, fractures of parasymphyseal region along with angle region (41.67%) were seen more commonly. Pearson's Chi Square Test was used to determine the association linking the type of mandibular fracture and treatment modality used and p value was < 0.05, which was considered statistically significant. Thus, the patterns of mandibular fractures delineate a significant occurrence of angle fractures among mandibular fractures, commonly seen along with fractures of parasymphyseal region and occurring with a significant male predilection.

Aetiology and presentation pattern of mandibular fractures at the State Dental Hospital in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria.

Background: The mandible is the biggest and the main bone occupying the lower third of the face, and it is prone to fracture because of its prominence. Fracture of the mandible is more common in some major parts such as, the angle, the canine region, and the condylar neck due to its weakness in those regions.&#x0D; Objective: To analyse the aetiology and presentation pattern of mandibular fractures at the State Dental Hospital in Maiduguri&#x0D; Methods: This was a retrospective-prospective descriptive study approved by the Ethical Review Board of Borno State Ministry of Health. A total number of 956 facial fracture cases, which included both old cases retrieved from the record book and new cases seen during the period under review, was recorded. Out of this total, 252 mandibular fracture cases were seen during the seven-year period at the State Dental Hospital in Maiduguri. The patients seen were examined clinically and radiographically by a team of three independent dental surgeons after calibration was done by a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon. All patients and cases included in the study were properly briefed and informed consent taken prior to carrying out the study.&#x0D; Results: A total of 956 facial fractures were recorded: 252 cases were mandibular fractures, accounting for a prevalence 26.4%. Males accounted for 76.2% and females 23.8% with a male to female ratio of 3.2:1. Age range was 11-60yrs with a mean age of 27.7yrs. Those aged 21-30yrs showed the highest level of distribution in the sampled cases, and most of the fractures occurred on weekends, especially Friday which accounted for 34.4% of cases. The major aetiology of most fracture is road traffic accident in 122(48.8%) cases and the body (44.8%) of the mandible was noted as the most commonly affected site.&#x0D; Conclusion: Although road traffic accident appeared to be the major aetiology of mandibular fracture in this study, a substantial part of assault related causes are due to blast related injuries to the mandible. The age distribution, sex, location and treatment modalities still remain the same.

Rates, Patterns and Prevalence of Mandibular Fractures in Children

Maxillofacial pediatric fractures are highly uncommon due to their unique characteristics of high elasticity, cartilaginous tissue, lack of pneumatization, evolutionary stages of dentition and other protective features. However, despite their rarity, pediatric facial fractures often seen by pediatric surgeons, plastic surgeons and in the emergency department. The mandible is the most commonly fractured pediatric facial bone. In this review, we will discuss the various patterns of mandibular fractures, their rates and prevalence in the pediatric population. An extensive search was conducted from various electronic databases such as PubMed, Medline Embase, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library to retrieve original researches and narrative reviews. The most common site to be fractured in the mandible is the condylar process, followed by the symphysis and the angle. Condylar process fractures are more common in younger children between the ages of 1 to 13 and angular fractures supersede during the teenage years. Mandibular fractures are also categorized based on the localization and number of fractures such as a single fracture, or multiple fracture both unilateral and bilateral. Further studies with larger sample sizes and specific age groups should be conducted to achieve more significant results.

Prevalence and Pattern of Mandibular Fractures: A Retrospective Study in India.

Objective:The main objective of this study is to analyze the prevalence of age, gender distribution, etiology, anatomic distribution, and treatment of mandibular fractures.Materials and Methods:This 2-year retrospective study was carried out in few multispeciality hospitals in India. The results were collected, and descriptive statistics were analyzed using SPSS.Results:Of 180 patients that were analyzed, males and the age group of 20–30 years had a higher prevalence of mandibular fractures with road traffic accidents being the most common etiological factor. Condyle was the most common site affected. Open treatment with rigid and nonrigid fixation was the commonly used method of treatment.Conclusion:Stratification of various epidemiological studies with data obtained over a large study period and sample size must be obtained to understand the plausible factors associated with mandibular fractures for appropriate diagnosis and management of mandibular fractures.

Patterns of Mandibular Fractures in South Australia: Epidemiology, Treatment, and Clinical Outcomes

The mandible is one of the most common facial bones to be injured with great clinical variability across countries caused by assaults, road traffic accidents, and falls. A retrospective review was conducted for adult mandibular fractures from January 2012 to January 2017 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Adelaide. Our aim was to describe epidemiological trends of mandibular fractures, differences for sex and age, and clinical outcomes. Five hundred sixty five adult patients presented with a mandibular fracture with a male predominance (4.5:1). The mean age was 34.2 years with men 11.9 years younger than females (32.0 versus 44.1 years, P < 0.001). Assaults represented 58.2% of cases. A quarter of the cohort reported alcohol use. Assaults commonly resulted in angle and symphyseal fractures, whereas almost all falls and road traffic accident resulted in condylar or coronoid fractures. Young men were 1.9 times more likely to have mandibular fractures compared to women, whereas elderly men were 11.8% less likely ( P < 0.001). The most common fracture was the angle (33.6%) and the angle/symphyseal (14.2%). Men were 2.5 times more likely to have surgery. The complication rate was 10.8% and the re-operative rate was 5.0%. Women had a significantly longer admission of 1.6 days compared to men (4.4 versus 2.8 days, P = 0.003). Young men are more likely to have mandibular fractures from assaults and have surgery. Young women and elderly females are more likely to have animal and fall-related injuries resulting including in condylar fractures with associated injuries and extended length of stay.

No apparent association between dental implants and mandibular fractures resulting from external forces.

Dental implants are cylindrical metallic screws inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Their location may affect the pattern of fractures that occur as a result of the traumatic forces to the mandible. The aim of this study was to investigate possible influences of dental implants on the patterns of mandibular fractures triggered by external forces. In this observational cross-sectional study, a total of 390 patients with mandibular fractures diagnosed between February 2016 and December 2020 were examined and the presence or absence of dental implants in the fracture gap was noted. Clinical and radiological data were analyzed in relation to the fracture line, the dental status, and the location of any implants. A total of 16 patients (4.1%) had previously placed dental implants in the mandible. Various fracture patterns were observed. Some yielded typical fracture lines located in the anatomically weak areas along the roots of the incisors, the mental foramina, and long-rooted molars. Occasionally, fracture lines were detected in combination with condylar fractures. Dental implants were not directly involved in any fracture line, except one. In that case, the fracture line extended from the alveolar process straight along the implant body, mimicking initial disintegration of the implant, with erosion of the surrounding bone. Once dental implants have osseointegrated, mandibular fractures are rarely projected along the implant surface. This observational retrospective cross-sectional study failed to associate mandibular fracture lines with the presence of dental implants.

Equine "Idiopathic" and Infundibular Caries-Related Cheek Teeth Fractures: A Long-Term Study of 486 Fractured Teeth in 300 Horses.

Background: Limited objective information is available on the prevalence of non-traumatic equine cheek teeth fractures, the signalment of affected horses, and the clinical features and treatment of these fractures.Objectives: This study aims to document patterns of idiopathic and infundibular caries-related cheek teeth fractures in a referral population and evaluate associations between fracture patterns and horse age, Triadan position of affected teeth, clinical signs, and deemed necessity for treatment.Study Design: A retrospective case review.Methods: The clinical records at Edinburgh University Veterinary School (2010–2018) were examined for the presence of non-traumatic equine cheek teeth fractures. Variations in the frequencies of different fracture patterns were compared between horse ages, Triadan tooth positions, clinical signs, and deemed necessity for treatment.Results: Records of 300 horses with 486 non-traumatic cheek teeth fractures including 77% maxillary and 23% mandibular teeth with a mean of 1.6 (range 1–10) fractured teeth/horse were available. Fracture patterns included maxillary first and second pulp horn (“slab”) cheek teeth fractures (n = 171), caries-related infundibular fractures (n = 88), other maxillary teeth fracture patterns (n = 92), mandibular first and second pulp horn (“slab”) fractures (n = 44), other mandibular fracture patterns (n = 62), and complete clinical crown loss (n = 29; including 23 maxillary and 6 mandibular teeth). The median age of affected horses ranged from 11 years with maxillary “slab” fractures to 15 years with infundibular caries-related fractures. Triadan 08–10s were the most commonly (86%) fractured maxillary teeth. The Triadan 08 and 09 positions were the most commonly (64%) fractured mandibular teeth. No clinical signs were noted in horses with 48% of the fractured teeth; oral pain/quidding was recorded with 26%, clinical apical infection with 23%, and bitting/headshaking problems with 6%. Treatments included extraction of 40% fractured teeth, extraction of small/loose fragments (10%), and odontoplasty. Stable remnants of 60% of fractured teeth were left in horses without clinical signs.Main Limitations: Long-term follow-up information was not available for all cases.Conclusions: There is increasing recognition of equine non-traumatic cheek teeth fractures, with about half not causing clinical signs. Teeth with apical infection, multiple fractures, or advanced caries require extraction. Other fractured teeth with subclinical endodontic disease may not need exodontia unless they later cause clinical signs.

Characterization of mandibular fractures on computed tomography

Background: With rapid urbanization and motorization of the society there is an exponential increase in road traffic accidents (RTA). Facial trauma and mandibular fractures are some of the common injuries seen in these cases. Imaging of these fractures is essential part of management. Panoramic and oblique X-rays can be used to diagnose these fractures however computerized tomography gives a unique advantage as it enables 3 D reconstructions of images. We conducted this study to assess the patterns of mandibular fractures and associated injuries presenting to a tertiary care center.&#x0D; Aims and Objectives: The study was conducted to assess the patterns of mandibular fractures and associated injuries presenting to a tertiary care center in Aurangabad.&#x0D; Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study in which 30 cases with complaints of facial trauma and with mandible fractures were included on the basis of a predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A detailed history was taken and mode of injury, duration since injury and history of any other trauma was noted down in proforma. Demographic details such as age and gender was also noted down. The CT scan of the face was done. Beam collimation of 2 mm, pitch of 1.2 mm and 120 Kv voltage was used. Patterns of mandibular fracture were analyzed.&#x0D; Results: Out of 30 patients there were 27 (90%) males and 3 (10%) were females with a M:F ratio of 9:1.The mean age of male and female patients was found to be 34.96 +/- 10.49 years and 26.66 +/-5.90 years respectively. Road traffic accidents (RTA) were the predominant causative mechanism and was seen in 27 (90%) of cases. Unilateral multifocal fractures involving body of the mandible were the most common type of fractures. Body of the mandible was seen to have been fractured in 17 (56.66%) cases.&#x0D; Conclusion: Mandibular fractures are commonly seen following road traffic accidents. Though X-Rays can be used for diagnosis of these fractures Computerized tomography gives a distinct advantage of ability to do 3-D reformatting of images.

Mandibular fractures in Kano, Northwest Nigeria: etiology and pattern of presentation.

Mandibular fractures are universal in distribution, but its etiologies and presentation patterns differ from one country to another because of varying socioeconomic, cultural and geographical factors. We analyzed the etiological factors and presentation patterns of mandibular fractures in a tertiary hospital at Nigeria's second largest city. Patients with isolated mandibular fractures at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano were prospectively reviewed over a 12-months period. Patients' demographic information and fracture characteristics (etiology, site, pattern and number of fracture) were recorded and analyzed. One hundred and forty-eight patients presented with 180 mandibular fractures. There were eight-fold higher men with mandibular fractures than women (M: F =8.3:1) with highest incidence in third decade of life. Road traffic accidents (84.46%) was the major etiology while iatrogenic fracture (0.68%) was found in one patient. Mandibular body was the most fractured site (41.11%) with parasymphyseal and angle regions accounting for 27.78% and 23.89% of total recorded fractures respectively. Mandibular fractures in Kano, Northwest Nigeria occurred predominantly in men in the third decade and are mostly caused by road traffic accidents. The majority of these fractures involved the mandibular body.

Trends in mandibular fracture patterns in central Telangana - A retrospective overview and analysis.

Socio-economic, environmental and cultural influences may lead to discrepancies in the distribution and occurrence of orofacial injuries. The aim of this study was to analyze the patient demographics and current patterns of mandibular fractures within a geographic population. The medical records of patients with facial trauma treated over a period of 3years were retrieved and reviewed. Their data were analyzed based on the following parameters-age, gender, mechanism of trauma, seasonal variation, drug/alcohol abuse at the time of trauma, number, and anatomic location of fractures. Of all the patients with maxillofacial injuries, 56% had mandibular fractures and 80% of these were sustained in road traffic accidents. Nearly 44% of patients had multiple mandibular fractures giving an average of about 1.6 fractures per mandible. Alcohol abuse was seen in 39% of patients. Seasonal influence indicated that the monsoon season had the highest incidence of trauma. Fracture patterns vary according to the etiology of the fracture and direction of the impact force. This information can help in the diagnosis and as a guide to future funding of preventive public health programs.

Mandibular angle fractures – fractures patterns with and without wisdom tooth presence: a 20 month retrospective study at a major trauma centre

Introduction: Much work has been done looking at mandibular fracture patterns in the presence or absence of wisdom teeth. However we were unable to find any recent studies undertaken about the combination of fractures seen with mandibular angle fractures when specifically analysing wisdom tooth presence/absence. We present our findings over a 20-month period at University Hospital Birmingham.

Trauma severity and mandibular fracture patterns in a regional trauma center.

Background Mandibular fractures are one of the most common types of facial fractures, the treatment of which can be delayed due to the severity of the trauma resulting in an increase of complications; thus, early evaluation of trauma severity at the time of visit is important. In South Korea, trauma patients are triaged and intensively treated in designated regional trauma centers. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between trauma severity and mandibular fracture patterns.Methods A medical records review was performed on patients who visited the regional trauma center at our hospital for mandibular fracture between 2009 and 2018. Epidemiologic data and mandibular fracture patterns were analyzed and compared with the conventional facial injury severity scale (FISS).Results Among 73 patients, 51 were classified as non-severe trauma patients and 22 as severe trauma patients. A higher trauma severity was associated with older age (odds ratio [OR], 1.164; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.057–1.404) and lower risk was associated with fractures located in the angle (OR, 0.001; 95% CI, 0–0.022), condylar process (OR, 0.001; 95% CI, 0–0.28), and coronoid process (OR, 0.004; 95% CI, 0–0.985). The risk was lower when the injury mechanism was a pedestrian traffic accident (OR, 0.004; 95% CI, 0–0.417) or fall (OR, 0.004; 95% CI, 0–0.663) compared with an in-car traffic accident. Higher FISS (OR, 1.503; 95% CI, 1.155–2.049) was associated with a higher trauma severity. The proposed model was found to predict the trauma severity better than the model using FISS (p< 0.001).Conclusion Age, location of mandibular fractures, and injury mechanism showed significant relationships with the trauma severity. Epidemiologic data and patterns of mandibular fractures could predict the trauma severity better than FISS.

Pattern of mandibular fractures and helmet use among motorcycle crash victims in Tanzania.

The maxillofacial structures are commonly affected in motorcycle crashes, with the mandible being one of the most frequently fractured bones. Helmets have been shown to have a protective effect in preventing maxillofacial injuries, however, its effect on the occurrence of mandibular fractures is not very well established. To evaluate the pattern of mandibular fractures among motorcycle crash victims in Tanzania, and determine the role of helmets in occurrence of mandibular fractures among the motorcyclists. This was a 6-months prospective, cross-sectional study that recruited motorcycle crash victims who reported with mandibular fractures following motorcycle crash at Muhimbili National Hospital. A specially designed questionnaire was used for data collection. For purpose of analysis, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software version 20 was used. The study included a total of 132 participants of whom majority were male (120, 90.9%). The peak age incidence was 21-40 years in 76.5% of the victims. More than half (89, 67.4%) of the victims were riders during the crash. Helmet use was reported in 42.3% of the victims, and majority (67.3%) were usinghalf-face helmets. The symphysis region was the frequently fractured anatomical location (50, 37.9%). More than half of the victims had multiple site involvement, with higher odds observed in individuals wearing half-face helmets. Young males were affected ten times more than females. Most of the victims were riders during the crash. The symphysis region was the frequently fractured anatomical site. There was no difference in occurrence of mandibular fractures between those who wore and those who did not wear helmets during the crashes. However, the severity of mandibular fractures was dependent on the type of helmet used.

BackgroundThis study was conducted to determine the relationship between third molar (M3) and mandibular fracture.MethodsPatients with unilateral mandibular angle or condyle fractures between 2008 and 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. Medical records were reviewed regarding the location of fractures, and panoramic radiographs were reviewed to discern the presence and position of ipsilateral mandibular third molars (M3). We measured the bony area of the mandibular angle (area A) and the bony area occupied by the M3 (area B) to calculate the true mandibular angle bony area ratio (area A–B/area A× 100).ResultsThe study consisted of 129 patients, of which 60 (46.5%) had angle fractures and 69 (53.5%) had condyle fractures. The risk of angle fracture was higher in the presence of M3 (odds ratio [OR], 2.2; p< 0.05) and the risk of condyle fracture was lower in the presence of M3 (OR, 0.45; p< 0.05), than in the absence of M3. The risk of angle fracture was higher in the presence of an impacted M3 (OR, 0.3; p< 0.001) and the risk of condyle fracture was lower in the presence of an impacted M3 (OR, 3.32; p< 0.001), than in the presence of a fully erupted M3. True mandibular angle bony area ratio was significantly lower in the angle fractures than in the condyle fractures (p= 0.003).ConclusionAngle fractures had significantly lower true mandibular angle bony area ratios than condyle fractures. True mandibular angle bony area ratio, a simple and inexpensive method, could be an option to predict the mandibular fracture patterns.
