Legal regulation facilitating the transition to a circular economy in the legal system of Slovakia

This chapter explores Slovakia’s transition to a circular economy within the framework of its membership to and the influence of the European Union (EU). Despite the implementation of robust environmental policies, significant gaps remain, including the marked lack of a raw material strategy. This chapter scrutinises legal regulations, revealing a convergence of circular economic initiatives regarding waste management. After analysing specific strategic documents impacting Slovakia’s transition to a circular economy, this chapter examines crucial legal regulations, with a primary focus on waste management. A key finding underscores the interdependence of Slovakia’s circular economy transition and advancements in waste management. However, progress is hindered by several challenges, particularly in terms of the need for mandatory changes in waste management practices looming to meet both EU and national goals. There is also a clear legislative gap in other areas that need to be actively addressed before the country can transition to a circular economy. In this respect, this chapter highlights a positive development: a collaborative effort in formulating a circular economy roadmap, one identifying impactful reforms in economic instruments, the construction sector, and the food and bio-waste value chain. This chapter concludes by calling for a cohesive and strategic approach, advancing the need for Slovakia to adopt a long-term vision and strict implementation timetable to champion a circular economy embodying sustainability principles.

Are NHS cleft services in England ready for delegation to integrated care systems?

Cleft care services in the UK have been nationally funded since centralisation 25 years ago and during this time have been able to demonstrate improved clinical outcomes. Integrated care systems have been introduced into legislature as part of the Health Care Act of 2022 and will be responsible for the paradigm shift of allocating funds on a regional basis for cleft care services in England from 2024. The proposed population-based funding formulas present an opportunity to improve current inequities in cleft care, including access to speech therapy and adult services. However, the regional footprint of integrated care systems does not align with that of the centralised cleft service system and represents a threat to the standardised patient-centred care that has taken two decades to build. Awareness needs to be raised so that cleft care providers can proactively adapt to this mandatory change to service funding to ensure that clinical standards are maintained and continue to improve.

EXECUTION OF GRAPHIC STILL-LIFE WITH INK AS THE BASIS FOR MASTERING THE LANGUAGE OF GRAPHICS

The article represents detailed stages and results of performing graphic still-lifes with ink in three main techniques: "lines", "spots", "hatches". Examples and types for setting still-life or alternative using photo images taken from open sources with mandatory changes and introduced details are given. Also the principles and examples for performing graphic and tonal sketches are presented, as an important stage in the search for a composition, which are reproduced on formats of graphic still-lifes through their spot solution to be the most objective and expressive. The technique for making a "cardboard" – a preparatory drawing and transferring the image to the formats of three graphic still-lifes is presented. The usage of tonal graphic sketches and "cardboard" is suggested along with traditional manual techniques and computer (digital) graphics technology. The principles and methods for using lines when creating a graphic still-life in the appropriate technique and variants of performing graphic still-lifes in the techniques of "lines", "spots" in comparison with each other are presented. The principles of division and combination of white and black with variants of their combinatorics are considered on the examples of graphic still-lifes in the "spot" technique. The stages for performing graphic still-lifes in the "hatching" technique, from the disclosure of large tonal gradations to the generalization of the work, are considered in detail. The methods for using different hatching techniques on different parts of the image of a graphic still-life are given. By the separate block for each section of the specified three graphic techniques the parallel between graphic still-lifes as educational tasks and graphic works of professional artists of Ukraine and the world is demonstrated.

A “Cold Case” Of Neonatal Death In Italy: A Fulfilling Prophecy or A Lesson Not Learnt?

In Italy, there was a recent great uproar in the aftermath of the tragedy of a 3 day-old newborn, who died in Pertini Hospital in Rome while rooming in and sleeping right next to the mother, and was reported by the media as having suffocated. There is surmounting evidence in the literature highlighting how the human major life events of birth in health systems have regressed to “dehumanizing” childbirth practices [6,7]. This is aggravated by the budget cuts and dire shortage of healthcare workers, that has negatively impacted the effectiveness of healthcare services. The decline in healthcare systems is mainly reflected by the lack of adequate perinatal care due to the widespread elimination of most of the psychosocial and ethical achievements in perinatal care that had been developed and attained in the last decades. This very critical issue does matter as well to caregivers, and in particular researchers and clinicians. Hundreds of research works, papers and reports, as well as many European projects, could risk to appear quite useless if they do not result in voices heard by the whole society, starting from the scientific community, patient advocacy groups, policy makers, managers, and so on. As women, clinicians and mothers, we understand now more than ever the real lesson of the pandemic: a mandatory change in childbirth culture, spaces and practices.

The Purposes and Justifications for Preferences of Web 2.0 Tools Used by Pre-Service Chemistry Teachers in Their Teaching Practices in Distance Education Environment

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mandatory changes were required in the field of education, as in many other fields. One of these fields is a teacher training programme, which includes teaching practice. It has become of great importance that pre-service science teachers, who frequently include experiments in their teaching practices in face-to-face education, will carry out this process in online education. This process, experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, prompted pre-service science teachers to find something that could replace the wet labs. One of the solutions in this situation is for them to choose and use appropriate Web 2.0 tools in their online lab teaching practices. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to examine the Web 2.0 tools used by pre-service chemistry teachers in their online teaching practices in a distance education environment, the purposes of using these tools, and their justifications for preferences to use these tools. This study was conducted with 15 pre-service chemistry teachers. Data were collected via observations, a form filled out by the participants, and semi-structured interviews in this study. According to the results of this study, it was determined that the participants used 17 Web 2.0 tools during their online teaching practices. The findings highlighted that the most used Web 2.0 tools were Perculus+ chat, Google docs, and Quizizz. Moreover, it was determined that the participants used these tools for 21 different purposes such as drawing students’ attention, getting hypotheses, and designing experiments. The results also indicated that the participants emphasised the ease of the Web 2.0 tool as a justification for the preference for almost all of the Web 2.0 tools they use, regardless of their purposes for using these tools. It is thought that the results can be used to show how to make online or face-to-face teaching practices in teacher training programmes by using Web 2.0 tools more effective in the future.

Бізнес-термінологія соціальних медіа в контексті об’єктів бухгалтерського обліку

The aim of the study is to adapt modern business terminology used in social networks (media) to the legislative framework of accounting and taxation. By drawing a parallel between terms in social media and terms (objects) used in accounting and taxation, it became possible to quickly adapt the legislative framework of accounting to the modern language of business. The works of domestic and foreign scholars related to accountance of business in social networks were studied, allowing to understand the identity of this problem both in Ukraine and over the world. As a result of the study, the problems of synchronization of terminology in social networks with accounting objects are allocated. Among the main ones are: differences in interpretation of terms, lack of standardization, limited context of information, rapid change of terminology, and cultural differences. It is determined that in order to successfully solve these problems, it is necessary to maintain clear communication, improve the accountants’ knowledge of digital technologies and relevant terminology in various spheres and spaces (either offline or online). An analysis of business terminology in social media in the context of accounting objects was carried out, which necessitates changes in the legislative framework of Ukraine, including accounting and taxation; the regulatory documents that require mandatory changes have been considered. The proposed changes in regulatory documents, first of all, will avoid many errors in accounting and reduce the time for studying specific accounting objects. This research is important for accountants and accounting and tax professionals because it will help them use social media effectively in the context of accountance and will help improve communication and understanding between different business sectors using different terms and approaches.

The investors' prospects on mandatory auditor rotation: evidence from Euronext Lisbon

<abstract> <p>The costs and benefits of mandatory auditor rotation (audit firm rotation and partner rotation) are far from being conclusive. This paper helps fill this gap in the literature by examining the relationship between mandatory auditor rotation and firms' stock market performance in the Portuguese context. Using a sample of listed companies in Portugal from 2009 to 2020, the main finding indicates that mandatory audit firm rotation is positively and significantly related to the firm's market performance. The evidence gathered suggests investors perceive mandatory audit firm rotation as a mechanism for improving audit quality. Controlling for the engagement partner rotation, we do not find that the rotation rule has a positive effect on firms' market performance. The net benefits of the mandatory audit rotation rule seem to be driven by the mandatory change of the audit firm, with improvements in market perceptions of earnings. Robustness tests suggest that the signal and significance of the association of firms' market performance and mandatory audit firm rotation holds in the presence of corporate governance mechanisms. Also, the audit experience of the departing and incoming partners does not interact with the relationship between mandatory partner rotation and firms' market performance.</p> </abstract>

PROCEDURAL RULES OF CHOOSING THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEEDINGS FORMS OF HEARING ADMINISTRATIVE CASES

The article is devoted to the study of procedural rules, which should be followed while choosing the forms of administrative proceedings to hear and decide on administrative cases. It is determined that some of those rules are directly identified in the regulations of the Code of Administrative Proceedings of Ukraine, whereas others are not clearly enshrined that in practice causes different interpretation of the legal norms regulating the procedure of hearing administrative cases. The work presents systematization and generalization of the corresponding written and unwritten rules that will contribute to the appropriate and identical application of the legislation on administrative proceedings, as well as will simplify solving the problems related with the choice of the administrative proceedings forms. Basing on findings of the conducted research, one can conclude that while choosing between the general and simplified action procedure of hearing administrative cases it is necessary to consider that the CAP of Ukraine determines a list of administrative cases, which should be heard only in the form of general action procedure, as well as defines procedural cases for the court to mandatory change from the simplified to general action procedure. In general, any administrative case can be heard according to the rules of simplified action procedure, but for the cases, which are forbidden to be heard according to that form of action procedure. If a case does not belong to the category of minor complexity in terms of requirements of the CAP of Ukraine, it is not forbidden to hear the case according to the simplified action procedure, and it also does not mean the case hearing should be done exclusively following the rules of general action procedure, but for the cases which should be heard according to that procedure due to the imperative requirements of the law. Minor cases are heard according to the simplified action procedure unconditionally, whereas considering other administrative cases, which can be heard according to the simplified action procedure, application of the general or simplified form depends on the court decision, made with consideration of the criteria (factors), identified in the CAP of Ukraine. Does mandatory IFRS adoption affect large and small public firms' accounting quality differently? Evidence from Canada

Canada adopted International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in 2011. We investigate the impact of this mandatory change by examining whether value relevance and non-market-based accounting information changed for a comprehensive set of Canadian companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). Our findings reveal the effects of IFRS adoption are not consistent across all firms as demonstrated by a minimal change in value relevance for large firms, but a significant increase for small firms. These differences are primarily attributed to the weakening (strengthening) relationship of book value to stock price for large (small) firms and a strengthening (weakening) relationship of earnings to stock price for large (small) firms. This suggests the goal of IFRS in providing improvement to the balance sheet is only achieved for small firms in Canada. For the non-market-based accounting quality measures of earnings persistence, earnings smoothing, earnings discretion, and the frequency of small profits to losses, the findings are mixed for large firms, but improve for small firms after IFRS adoption.

High‐speed chases along the seafloor put Bryde's whales at risk of entanglement

AbstractRecent changes in the South African marine ecosystem and the introduction of an experimental octopus fishery have resulted in an unsustainably high rate of fatal Bryde's whale entanglements. Using suction‐cup attached bio‐loggers, we identified a previously undescribed feeding behavior used by Bryde's whales to catch prey, and this behavior may make them susceptible to entanglement and mortality in bottom‐mounted fishing gear. As they chase down their prey, inshore Bryde's whales sprint and maneuver along the seafloor for extended periods of time, making multiple direction changes, and reaching extraordinarily high swimming speeds. These findings assisted in the implementation of mandatory changes to octopus fishing gear that have drastically reduced the number of entanglements. The novel finding that Bryde's whales use high‐speed chases near the seafloor to catch their prey highlights the value of using species‐specific, behavioral information for making conservation recommendations.

Computer Analysis of New Language Norms Usage in Ukrainian Online Mass-Media

Introduction. In 2019, a new version of spelling was approved in Ukraine. However, Ukrainian mass media experiences some problems with the new norms. Meanwhile, the correct usage of language in mass media is extremely important, because journalistic texts have a large audience and can be used by readers as a certain model. Thus, it’s important to discover specifics of new norms usage in online mass media to understand the level of the norms compliance. Relevance and purpose. The purpose of the article is to propose an algorithm for computer analysis of texts, which allows to investigate compliance with new spelling norms by leading Ukrainian online media, as well as to determine whether the situation in the media changes over time. This study is relevant, because a comprehensive study of the new language norms usage in online massmedia is lacking, scientists focused their attention on individual norms and the number of texts in sample wasn’t large. Methodology. Computer analysis: with Python programs more than 8 thousand news items were collected from the leading online media. Vocabularies with old and new language norms were designed. Comparative analysis: usage of foreign components, variable spelling changes, spelling of the international sites and Internet resources, spelling of certain words were compared in the mass media in 2019 and 2021. Results. It was determined that the authors of the publications did not adapt to the variable spelling changes. Regarding mandatory changes, problems were observed with the spelling of the names of international websites and Internet resources, as well as some words. The situation with the use of feminine forms was the most stable. Spelling of words with the first foreign component, as well as with part «half/piv-» was observed in two versions: old and new spelling. Conclusions. The situation with the new spelling in Ukrainian online media is improving over time, although the acceptance of the new norms is still very slow. Moreover, this situation is observed precisely in the segment of quality Ukrainian media, which adhere to professional standards and are an example for many journalists to follow. With this in mind, we recommend that the editors of the online mass-media take measures to improve the situation.

Education of nursing profession amid COVID-19 Pandemic: A qualitative study.

Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic is the main challenge with which the education systems in the world have ever faced. Furthermore, nursing students and nurse educators have faced the challenges in the teaching-learning process. This study aimed to explain the experiences of nursing education amid COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This research was conducted in 2020-2021 through qualitative content analysis approach. Participants were selected from nursing schools using purposive sampling. Data were collected using in‐depth, unstructured, and face‐to‐face interviews. The interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed verbatim. The conventional content analysis method was used to analyze the data. Results: 232 codes were generated which were grouped into four main categories, namely mandatory change in nursing education, change of training priorities of nurse educators, insufficient clinical competence, and opportunities during coronavirus outbreak. Conclusions: COVID-19 prevalence caused many unprecedented changes in nursing education. Such changes have brought about opportunities and challenges in nursing education.

ENVIRONMENTAL INSURANCE: CURRENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT GUIDELINES

Introduction. Today's new challenges dictate changes in the guidelines of development in the field of environmental insurance. Environmental issues are extremely important factors in such changes. In addition, they are exacerbated daily by the effects of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, which continues to this day. It is obvious that the strategic directions, which were outlined long before its beginning, have lost their significance and to some extent have identified a new range of problems and their consequences. Given the outlined range of problems, environmental insurance is especially relevant, which has undergone changes that are produced by today's challenges and thus led to the definition of new strategic guidelines for their development. Purpose. Investigate the development of environmental insurance in the range of domestic and global scale, which will determine the strategic guidelines for its development. Method (methodology). In the process of research such methods were used as logical, which allowed to analyze scientific works in the field of environmental insurance; analysis and synthesis, which made it possible to identify factors influencing environmental insurance. Results. The normative and legal basis for the introduction of compulsory environmental insurance is described. The focus is on the mandatory change of previously announced strategic guidelines for the development of environmental insurance to take into account military risks in Ukraine. Strategic guidelines for environmental insurance in Ukraine have been identified, which cover five sectors: electricity, oil and gas, utilities, industry and finance, which need to be ensured in the legislative sphere. It is proposed to implement attractive environmental insurance conditions for «green» insurers in Ukraine. It is established that the practical aspects of the study of strategic guidelines for the development of environmental insurance require further study in the direction of decarbonization, which may be possible after the end of the russian-Ukrainian war

On the formation of the Roma (Gypsy) ethnos

The author attempts to consider the history and dynamics of the formation of the Roma (Gypsy) a result of different impacts between the local population and the publiceconomic institutions of those countries, where Roma (Gypsy) lived temporarily or permanently; how ethnic contacts were established; reasons, results and post-effects of the enemy conquests of the territories, where Gypsies settled for good causing mandatory and natural changes in the language, traditions and customs, as well as religion. The issue of the ethno-genesis of the Roma/Gypsy – the process of the formation of this given ethnic community on the basis of various ethnic components – does not lose its relevance. Discussing this topic, the author revises the issue of the Indian origin of the ancestors of modern Roma in the light of new achievements in the field of genetics and the obtained irrefutable evidence that allows to put forward as one of the hypothesis the ability of Roma/Gypsy for genetic resistance, which helped them to preserve their mentality, traditions and customs, the foundations of customary law, without losing their native language. The author also touches upon the issue of defining the type of Gypsy social structure and culture, which often arises in the cases when the Gypsies are seen as exclusively nomadic people. The author puts forward his hypothesis regarding the word ‘nomadic‘ used in relation to the Gypsies.

IVF laboratory management in COVID-19 pandemic

Background: Since the first report of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), widely known as COVID-19, in late December 2019, it has spread worldwide. The eventual return of new normal has started to happen in most countries where the COVID-19 curve has flattened, and Assisted reproduction technology (ART) services are eventually resuming. Well-organized ART (embryology/andrology) laboratories safeguard the wellbeing of all staff, patients, and their gametes/embryos.
 Main body: A well-organized pandemic management plan must be implemented in anticipation of possible subsequent COVID-19 waves. Apart from local and national guidelines, some mandatory changes need to be taken into considerations that will allow us to overcome the fear of this deadly pandemic, work smoothly and stop any possible transmission without comprising the quality control for successful treatment. These mandatory changes include conserving different supplies, reducing manpower needs, and various protective measures for non-clinical and clinical staff, patients, and gametes/embryos.
 Conclusion: The current pandemic of COVID-19 suggests a well-organized action-oriented emergency plan to assure the wellbeing of all stakeholders.

Сравнительная оценка динамики патогистологической картины гнойной раны экспериментальных животных с моделью фурункула в области головы и шеи при стандартном лечении и при использовании электрорефлексотерапии

The most common neodontogenic infectious and inflammatory processes affecting the skin are furuncles in the maxillofacial area. The task of effective treatment of patients with this disease is now becoming increasingly urgent which is largely due to the deterioration of the environmental situation, changes in the nature of nutrition and chronic stress. The purpose of the study is to make a comparative assessment of the results of the standard method of postoperative treatment and complex treatment using electroacupuncture based on the dynamics of the pathohistological picture of a purulent wound in experimental animals with a model of a boil in the head and neck. Materials and methods. Experimental studies were carried out on 20 guinea pigs of the same age and body weight, on which a model of a boil in the submandibular area was created. The boil was formed within 3 days, after which all experimental animals under local infiltration anesthesia underwent primary surgical treatment of the infectious and inflammatory focus with wound drainage. Then the animals were divided into two series. Series 1 received a standard treatment package in the postoperative period (antibiotics, daily dressings with mandatory drainage changes, instillation of the wound with antiseptic solutions). For series 2 of animals, the standard treatment was combined with an electroacupuncture treatment. The material for pathohistological examination was collected in the following terms: 3, 7, 14 and 21 days after the operation. Serial sections were made according to the standard procedure. The micro-preparations were examined using a light microscope. For comparison a descriptive method was used. Results and discussion. The most significant differences were found on the 21st day of observation when diffuse mononuclear cell infiltration of all layers of the dermis was detected in most of the series 1 micro-preparations which indicated the presence of productive inflammation. During the same period of observation, all the micro-preparations of series 2 showed a multilayered flat keratinizing epithelium without violating the integrity throughout. The papillary and reticular layers of the dermis showed no signs of inflammation. The appendages of the skin were traced throughout the entire field of vision without visible pathological changes. All of the above indicated no signs of inflammation. Conclusion. The results obtained clearly indicate the positive effect of electroacupuncture on both wound cleansing and the course of the processes of reparative regeneration of the skin

GREEN ECONOMY DEVELOPMENT: METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH

The subject of this study is the principles, factors and features of the green economy as a complex multicomponent system. It was important to clarify the ontology of the term “development” and to propose a methodology for filling the meaning of this term with a specific scientific approach, which consisted in identifying factors that shape directed, natural (regular) and inevitable changes as mandatory elements of development in the philosophical sense of the latter. The article analyzes different approaches to the definition of green economy, which gave the authors a reason to propose their own perception of the green economy as a socio-eco-economic system, which should be simultaneous under directed, natural (regular) and inevitable changes to ensure its development. The authors dwelled on the characteristics of each of the three mandatory changes. Directed changes in the green economy as a system were considered through the prism of seventeen goals of sustainable development (defining those for which the green economy “works” directly), which form new requirements for key components of the economic system: production, exchange, distribution and consumption. Regular changes are characterized as those that correspond or do not contradict the basic economic laws of the post-industrial era and form the ecological basis for the competitiveness of the economy. Irreversibility of change is defined as justified regulatory measures of strict environmental and economic policy, based on the methodological, proven by scientists, the principle of regulation in a mixed economic system and the abandonment of free market mechanisms (which “does not work” to achieve sustainable development). The authors have proposed a system-hierarchical approach to ensuring intermediate principles of green economy development as a system (direction, regularity and irreversibility of changes) and their integral effect on the quality of sustainable development of the social system as a whole. Further directions of research of system principles of development of green economy have been defined as well.

DIGITALIZATION OF EDUCATION WITH COVID-19

This article discusses the impact of COVID-19 on education system. Changes in education system have been interpreted this paper from both Turkey as well as the world in general. While education was shaped according to Covid-19, did it actually fulfill the necessity of the age of the 21st century? In fact, online education was an idea that many schools had designed, but it wasn't much studied on it. Thanks to COVID-19, the transition of education to online platforms could not be achieved step by step. Education underwent a mandatory change without sufficient study time. For such a radical change, it is necessary to proceed step by step, and this is a time-consuming process. There was no opportunity to see the shortcomings in the change process of education system. The world suddenly abandoned traditional education, education modernized in accordance with the age. Also, this sudden change in education system has brought many problems. With online education, it is estimated that there will be certain skill deficiencies in future students. This may affect the productivity in business life in the future. In this article, economic aspects of digitalization of education will be discussed. Well-managed issues, inadequacies and inequalities in the online education process will be emphasized in paper. As a result of different researches and surveys, online education has been addressed from different perspectives.

Pazarlama Eğitiminin Dijitalleşmesi: Covid-19 Sonrası Dönemde Üniversiteler İçin Yeni Yaklaşımlar

Education is one of the areas most affected by the transition to the information age. Universities and faculties/schools have to adapt to this, otherwise the consumption of information that is increased and shared from different environments may be detached from universities. Marketing education, of course, gets its share from these developments. In this direction, a descriptive study was conducted on how to follow marketing science and education in this new situation. This study focuses on digital disruptions in education and the effects of the deterioration caused by digitalization on marketing education. Moreover, the new approaches which are appropriate for the mandatory change in marketing education with reasons and recommendations are discussed. In the information age, educational institutions have to adapt to these new situations and new norms. Therefore, concepts such as active, adaptive and experiential learning with addition of new tools should be included in marketing education.

Management of minor burns during the COVID-19 pandemic: A patient-centred approach.

Introduction:The UK government introduced lockdown measures on 23 March 2020 due to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A restructuring of clinical services was necessary to accommodate mandatory changes while also maintaining the best possible standards for patient care. The present study explored the initial management, follow-up and patient-reported outcomes of burn injuries <15% total body surface area (TBSA) during the height of the COVID-19 lockdown at a tertiary burns centre.Methods:A retrospective review of all adult patients with burns <15% TBSA during the national lockdown (23 March 2020 to 10 May 2020) was undertaken at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), UK. All referrals from non-QEHB telemedicine (external) or QEHB emergency (internal) departments were reviewed for management, length of hospital stay and pattern of follow-up (ward attender, self-care, community or outreach nurses). A telephone survey based on a structured questionnaire was conducted to establish patients’ satisfaction.Results:A total of 84 burn patients were included in the study. The mean age was 39 years (age range = 19–91 years) and the male:female ratio was 4:1. Patients were managed non-operatively (n = 69, 82%) or operatively (n = 15, 18%). Patients attended the ward attender acute burns clinic only once (n = 36, 61%). The telephone survey captured 70% (n = 59) of the study population and 57 patients (97% of respondents) were pleased with the ongoing care and burn healing.Conclusion:The integration of patient led self-care, reduction in admissions, minimal clinics attendance and a telemedicine follow-up is an effective model for small burns management during the COVID-19 pandemic. A high degree of patient satisfaction was achieved with continuous and approachable communication channels with the burn multidisciplinary team. We continue to implement this effective model of burns management throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent period.Lay SummaryThe lockdown measures due to the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic affected the way we manage all medical emergencies including burns. The initial management, follow-up and patient satisfaction for small burn injuries during lockdown has not been reported previously. The aim of this study is to examine the outcome in terms of small burn management, hospital stay, number of clinic reviews, healing and patient satisfaction during the lockdown period in a burn centre in the UK. This would look at the need for operations and whether patients stayed longer if they required an intervention. We reviewed adult patients with small burns during the national lockdown (23 March 2020 to 10 May 2020) at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). All referrals from telemedicine, referral system (external) or QEHB (internal) were reviewed for management, length of hospital stay and pattern of follow-up. Patients were reviewed in the acute burns clinic and given advice for burn management and dressing for self-care. Follow-up was mostly via email (telemedicine) A telephone survey based on a structured questionnaire was conducted to find out patients’ satisfaction. Four times more men than women had small burns during the lockdown period. The average age was 39 years. The majority were managed conservatively with dressings (82%) and a small proportion required an operation (18%). Most patients attended the acute burns clinic only once (61%) for initial assessment and management.
