To encourage the realization of community participation, Bumdes administrators and village government must work together in planning programs and still consider existing social values, so that in carrying out development programs it can provide welfare to the community and be able to create strong community participation in Bumdes management. The purpose of this study was to determine community participation and its inhibiting factors in the management of Bumdes Harapan Berkembang. In this study using descriptive statistical analysis. The population in this study were Village Officials, Bumdes Management, and the people in the East Mejasem Village. The sample in this study was determined using the sampling technique used was purposive sampling, where samples were taken based on certain criteria. After analyzed with Cohen and Uphoff's theory which shows community participation in management activities, namely participation in planning, participation in implementation, participation in benefits, and participation in evaluation, it can be seen that community participation in Bumdes management was at the Degrees of Citizen Powers or Partnership, namely Bumdes Harapan Berkembang has achieved citizen power, so that at this level multi-stakeholder cooperation formed in formulating or implementing policies and programs. According to Arnstein, new participation really occurs when people have sufficient levels of wealth and the highest level of people's sovereignty was the occurrence of social control and citizen control in which important decisions and controllers of development in the hands of the people. There were factors that hinder the successful management of Bumdes Harapan Berkembang, namely internal and external factors.

Exploring Academics’ Performance Management Experiences at a University of Technology in South Africa

This study was designed to explore the academics’ experiences of the performance management system (PMS) at a university and to understand which of their performances enhanced the achievement of the university’s strategic goals. Furthermore, the study sought to establish the support required by the academics to achieve the performance as captured in their key performance indicators (KPIs) within the faculty. A qualitative research design was adopted using semi-structured, in-depth, individual interviews to collect data from 18 academics, coded L1 to L18. Interview questions revolved around the participants’ four KPIs, namely quality teaching and learning, research productivity, community engagement and participation in management activities. Through content data analysis, participants’ experiences were highlighted. It was revealed that PM at the institution revolved around pre-determined KPIs that were given to the academics in advance before the exercise. The four KPIs later came out as the key PM practises applied by the university to enhance the achievement of its strategic goals. It was also possible to establish the participants’ performance, the support given by the university and the gap between the participants’ performance and the institution’s expectations, as captured in the KPIs. It emerged that whilst the participants had the needed competencies to ensure quality teaching and learning, they also required, among others, a mechanism to assess the impact of teaching on the students’ performance. It further emerged that little was done in terms of research productivity; and that participants required enormous support from the university, and rewards to enable them to publish and supervise. Regarding community engagement and participation in administrative activities, participants indicated that it was more challenging due to pressing teaching loads. Based on the findings, recommendations to enhance all the identified KPIs were proposed.

The impact of employees' perceptions about top management engagement on sustainability development efforts and firm performance

AbstractBecause sustainability management plays a vital role in firm performance, it is critical to understand the underlying mechanisms that drive better firm performance with sustainability adoption. Thus, drawing upon responsible leadership theory and the dynamic resource‐based view, this study examines how the level of sustainability adoption influences firm performance, both environmental and financial, emphasizing the role of top management beliefs and participation in sustainability adoption. With responses from 310 employees working in manufacturing, healthcare, and retail industries, the SEM analysis results support that (i) perceived top management's strong beliefs lead to a higher level of sustainability adoption by organizations; (ii) perceived top management's active participation positively moderates the relationship between perceived top management beliefs and the level of sustainability adoption; (iii) the higher level of sustainability adoption results in better environmental and financial performance; and (iv) environmental performance positively and partially mediates the relationship between the level of sustainability adoption and financial firm performance. Finally, we offer guidance to managers who would like to leverage top management attributes to achieve environmental and financial performance via environmental sustainability practices.

Nursing students admitted through the affirmative action system display similar performance in professional and academic trajectories to those from the regular path in a public school in Brazil

Affirmative action providing higher education access for socially vulnerable students has been implemented in several countries. However, these policies remain controversial. This study compares the performance of students admitted through the regular path and social quota systems, during and after completion of nursing education, in a public nursing school in Brazil. This retrospective cohort study included all students admitted to nursing school at the School of Health Sciences (ESCS), Brazil, between 2009 and 2014, who were followed until May 2020. The first phase involved document analysis from the ESCS academic management system and Brazilian government agencies. In the second phase, a survey was conducted among the alumni. The social quota system criterion was public school attendance across all primary and secondary education levels. Of the 448 students included in the study, 178 (39.7%) were from the affirmative action and 270 (60.3%) from the regular path systems. Affirmative action students were older at the time of nursing school admission (p < 0.001) and took longer to be admitted to the nursing school (p < 0.001) after completing high school. There were no significant differences in the dropout rates and years to complete nursing school. In the second phase, 108 alumni answered the survey. No significant differences were found in their participation in the undergraduate scientific research program and university extension projects, attending residency programs, getting a master's degree and doctoral degree, monthly income, teaching activity, joining public service through a government job competition process, participation in management activities in the private and public health sector, and degree of job satisfaction. Our results revealed that affirmative action is a policy that contributes to the reduction of inequalities and guarantees the training of nursing professionals with a similar professional qualification received through affirmative action and regular path systems.

Enforcement encourages participation in resource management: explaining a fisheries management paradox in Hawaii

AbstractThis paper uses a case study of fisheries co‐management in Hawaii to explore barriers to community participation in resource management and the reasons for these impediments. Our study suggests that while fishers may disobey regulations to maximise personal gain, they may also understand the necessity for regulations and desire more stringent enforcement. This seeming paradox reflects the tension between a recognised need to conserve resources through restricting harvests and competitive pressure among individual fishers. When fishers observe insufficient enforcement on the part of government agencies, this may fuel an already present sense of disrespect for and distrust of the government, inhibiting community participation in co‐management efforts. This study suggests that rather than attempting to directly encourage community members to participate in co‐management efforts, managers should instead focus on enhancing enforcement to alleviate communities' frustration and disrespect. Thus, enhanced enforcement efforts may boost participation in management activities and lead to a more sustainably managed resource.

Mejora de los indicadores biológicos de exposición al mercurio en trabajadores de una refinería de oro

Introducción: La exposición al mercurio asociada a malas prácticas de higiene laboral favorece el desarrollo de la intoxicación ocupacional denominada mercurialismo. Para verificar el impacto que la mejoría de los niveles ambientales de mercurio tendría en trabajadores de la refinería en una empresa aurífera peruana, se elaboró un programa de reingeniería para el control de la exposición que abarca aspectos de salud e higiene laboral y participación activa de la jefatura operativa. Objetivos: Estudiar en trabajadores de una refinería aurífera las variaciones de indicadores de exposición a mercurio al mejorar la calidad del ambiental laboral. Diseño: Estudio prospectivo y descriptivo. Lugar de estudio: Servicio de Salud Ocupacional de una empresa minera aurífera en el Perú. Participantes: Trabajadores de la refinería de oro. Intervenciones: Se modificó la metodología del examen médico y de la evaluación del ambiente laboral de 100 trabajadores de la refinería de oro, durante el periodo 2003-2007, además de mejorar las condiciones de trabajo. Luego, se cuantificó semestralmente los límites ambientales del tóxico y los indicadores de exposición. Se analizó estadísticamente la variación de los valores medios de los indicadores biológicos respecto a la variación del tóxico en el ambiente de trabajo. Principales medidas de resultados: Mejora de los indicadores ambientales y biológicos. Resultados: Los valores medios de los indicadores ambientales mejoraron cada año, al igual que los indicadores biológicos del universo estudiado. El mercurio ambiental en 2 003 fue 6,3 mg/m3 y, en 2 007, 0,03, valor de p &amp;lt; 0,001. El indicador mercurio urinario en 2003 fue 11,9 ug/L y, en 2007, 2,3 con p &amp;lt; 0,01. Conclusiones: En el grupo estudiado, la disminución del tóxico en el ambiente de labor determinó la mejora significativa de los indicadores biológicos de exposición al mercurio en el trabajador.

A conceptual framework of antecedents of information search in exporting

PurposeThe most commonly used segmentation approach to understand information acquisition behavior in the exporting context is to group individuals/firms on a variety of demographic and psychographic variables. This paper argues that while psychographic and demographic segmentation provide descriptive information about who are likely to engage in information search, they are insufficient to provide insights into why individuals search.Design/methodology/approachDrawing upon the applied psychology literature, an integrative framework using the key constructs of motivation and cognitive ability is developed that conceptualizes the influences of and outcomes from information acquisition.Practical implicationsBy studying information acquisition within the context of the interactions between motivation and ability, normative insights can be gained on the likelihood of management's active participation in information search. The author develops a typology for the nature of information acquisition to explain the behaviors of user firms with respect to government‐sponsored export programs/services.Originality/valueThis paper attempts to make two contributions to the export behavior literature: by setting the stage for a more multi‐disciplinary analytical and deliberate approach to export information acquisition with respect to identifying relevant variables as antecedents to motivation and cognitive ability to search, and developing a conceptual framework for addressing their relationship to export performance; and advancing research propositions that facilitate empirical testing of these relationships in future research.

A Leadership-Management Training Curriculum for Pathology Residents

Leadership and management skills are increasingly critical to the success of pathologists in and outside of academic centers. We describe a leadership and management curriculum in a combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency program. The mentor-based approach incorporates leadership and management skills throughout the residency with a dedicated 2-month rotation during the final year of training. This 2-month rotation is led by a senior faculty pathologist mentor and includes active participation in management activities, small group discussions, reading, and a management process project. The topics for the small group discussions, reading list, mentor-based activities, and completed management process projects are described. Outcomes and evaluations are reported for residents who have completed this curriculum in leadership and management.
