Assessment of female students' perception on access and utilization of water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management in higher education institutions in Uganda

AbstractThe main purpose of this study was to assess female students' perception of access and utilization of water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management in HEIs. A qualitative research design was embraced, and it was exploratory while gathering responses from the participating respondents using semi‐structured interviews, focus group discussions and observation from course coordinators from six faculties, students guild leadership, and selected university managers who were purposively selected and regarded to be more knowledgeable with university affairs as far as learners' social welfare was concerned. The study found that many students did not have adequate access to water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management. They also lack adequate menstrual hygiene management education and their rights to sanitation and water facilities for menstruation management in terms of the menstrual cycle, the importance of washing body parts, and the issue of stigma during the menstruation period. The study recommended that the Directorate of Gender at the university should review and work very closely with the Department of Estates and Works to improve the maintenance and provision of water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management.

This article focuses on the analysis of published research on risk management in higher education institutions. The authors believe that for effective implementation of risk management in Kazakhstani universities and the development of a concept for its scientific and methodological support, a systematic and large-scale research effort is necessary. This includes identifying the categorical framework of risk management in higher education. In this context, the authors conducted a bibliometric analysis usingthe Scopus database, as well as the methodological approach and capabilities of the VOSviewer software tool. The study of sources on the issue of risk management in universities revealed insufficient development of this topic from methodological positionsand in the applied context. Additionally, the bibliometric analysis not only identified and visualized current research directions in this field but also highlighted trends for future research in the subject areas of "risk management," "university management," and "risk management in higher education institutions."

Teacher’s service-dominant orientation: scale development and validation

ABSTRACT The literature suggests that the co-creation of higher education value, from the perspective of the service-dominant logic (SDL), begins in the teaching-learning process, and the results of this process shape the entire ecosystem of higher education value for economic and social development. From this perspective, it is important to identify strategic tools that foster the co-creation of services and value during the teaching-learning process. As a contribution, this article presents the first proposal for a scale to measure teachers’ service-dominant orientation (SDO) in higher education. This proposal was operationalised using a literature review and qualitative and quantitative empirical approaches involving six stages and supported by three studies. Conceptualised as a portfolio of interaction capabilities that teachers can strategically develop to foster co-creation in higher education, the Teacher S-D Orientation scale is presented, made up of five capacities: individual interactions (four items), relational interactions (four items), ethical interactions (three items), empowered interactions (three items) and developmental interactions (four items). Considering that from the SDL perspective, the strength of the student-teacher relationship is a decisive factor in co-creation during the teaching-learning process, the external validation of the SDO scale was ensured, with the results suggesting that the teacher’s SDO has a significant impact on the relationship quality in higher education. The scale validation has implications for both marketing and educational literature. The article concludes with recommendations for teachers and management of higher education institutions.

The Reality of Innovation Management in Higher Education Institutions from Innovative Students’ Point of View

Innovation management plays a crucial role in harnessing innovations for economic development. Higher education institutions are considered one of the fundamental stages for embracing and supporting student innovations, especially in the early stages of ideation, selection and experimentation. Within this context, the current study aimed to understand the reality of innovation management in Omani higher education institutions at the pre-innovation stage. The study employed a descriptive methodology using a qualitative phenomenological research design. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with a sample of 30 participants from two government universities and three private universities. The study utilised thematic analysis for data interpretation. In its findings, the study discusses the current reality of the management of the pre-innovation stage in Omani higher education institutions through five themes: announcing competitions, team formation, supervisory role, exploration of innovative ideas, and policies and regulations. The findings revealed that, despite efforts made by universities, there is a lack of planning or a defined roadmap for the innovation process. The study recommends implementing supportive policies and regulations for innovation, placing more emphasis on planning in the pre-innovation stage and adjusting supervision for students according to their innovative areas. Development of a method for assessing the level of digital competencies of higher education teachers based on the calculation of the multidimensional polytope volume

The object of the study is the method for assessing the level of digital competencies of higher education teachers. Teachers with a high level of digital competencies can create more interactive, interesting and more effective learning materials, which has a positive impact on education quality. The ability to ensure the continuity and quality of the educational process in remote conditions is relevant. To improve the qualification level of teachers, it is necessary to form a measuring system of indicators. A method for calculating the potential for changing the digital competency level was developed and trajectories of forming digital competencies of higher education teachers based on the project-vector methodology were formed. The method was implemented and verified as part of the state project in the Republic of Kazakhstan with the participation of the Higher Education Development National Center and Astana IT University. Testing of 62 teachers of Astana IT University, Karaganda Buketov University and Toraighyrov University was taken as a basis. The analysis involved measuring the achievement of their competency level in four categories: didactic, design, monitoring, and personal. The results obtained allow a systematic approach to the process of assessing and forming the competencies of higher education teachers. The result obtained is due to integrating the project-vector management methodology into the process of digital competency assessment. The value of the method is the possibility of using it both personally by teachers to track the level of competency achievement, and by the management of higher educational institutions for motivation and when signing contracts. In the future, the results of the pilot project are planned to be distributed to other higher education institutions in the Republic of Kazakhstan. And then extend its results to higher education institutions in Central Asia and Eastern Europe

The research article is devoted to the theoretical aspects of ‘feedback’, particularly in the education system. The problems and prospects of applying feedback in the educational process are outlined. The features of feedback as a tool for managing the development of higher education institutions in today’s conditions are determined. It is emphasized that it is necessary to focus on organizational support for communication management in higher education institutions to develop higher education in Ukraine. It is noted that feedback is one of the most critical and widespread communication tools. It is determined that in managing the development of higher education institutions with the help of feedback, the following theses are achieved: improving the quality of the educational process, satisfaction of higher education students and research and teaching staff, optimization of management decisions, improvement of the communication process of all participants in the educational process, adaptation to changes, support for the development of research and teaching staff, promotion of innovation and development, planning and strategic development, improvement of student life. It is noted that the main tasks of feedback are helping to adapt faster, encouraging growth and development, and provoking changes to achieve the goals. Therefore, feedback is a tool for developing both the employee and the enterprise. The article identifies and characterizes the main types and kinds of feedback. The main types are positive, negative, and constructive feedback. For effective management of the development of higher education institutions, the most effective type of feedback is constructive. Attention is focused on the rules of constructive feedback. Attention is paid to the generally accepted and most optimal method of feedback – The Sandwich Method, which has both positive and negative aspects. Critical issues of online learning management in higher educational institutions in a developing country context: examples from Ghana

PurposeOnline learning has come to stay in a technologically advancing world with increasing populations. The search for ways to make online learning more efficient and effective in some developing countries continues as the accompanying issues in developing country contexts abound. This paper explores the issues that underlie online learning management in a developing country context, focusing on the Moodle, Sakai and Zoom platforms used in some selected public universities in Ghana.Design/methodology/approachThe study relied on the qualitative approach to data collection and a descriptive design for analysis. Using the social constructivism theory, the paper discussed the critical issues students, and to a lesser extent, instructors encounter in their engagement on these platforms for academic learning.FindingsThe study found that the inefficient use of these platforms is due to several factors including the high cost of data, poor perception of the quality of online learning compared to traditional in-person contacts, poor attitude of students, low participation in online learning, lack of computers and poor internet connectivity among others.Research limitations/implicationsIt is important to mention that this study was limited to some selected public universities in Ghana. Data could have been collected from a wider sample including other Ghanaian tertiary institutions or some other developing countries. The similarity of study outcomes in other developing countries, however, suggests that similar results would have been obtained in an international sample.Practical implicationsDespite the robustness of the Learning Management systems in place, the evidence suggests that their utilisation is far less than optimal. However, with relevant policies and the provision of needed technical support, training, provision of equipment like computers for use by both students and instructors and efficient internet connectivity, the LMS platforms could be more efficient for online learning.Originality/valueThe authors conducted this research using original data from interviews in the selected public universities in Ghana. The data was meant to inform the discussion on some of the critical issues that underlie online learning in a developing country context. Although the study relied on data from selected public universities in a single country, its outcomes reflect fundamental issues of online learning in a developing country context which find relevance in available study outcomes.

Vertically integrated project: uniting teaching, research, and community in favor of sustainability

Purpose Higher education institutions (HEIs) are crucial in sustainable development. To this end, they must infuse sustainability into all their endeavors. This study aims to delve into the unique vertically integrated project (VIP), a project-based learning approach and its impact on students’ skills and the surrounding community. Design/methodology/approach The research design was collaborative, reflecting the spirit of the VIP. Step 1 involved an action research approach, where students and instructors worked closely with municipal representatives to identify challenges and devise solutions for local economic development. In Step 2, students' voices were heard through a survey. Step 3 encompassed presentations in scientific and nonscientific events, capturing the community’s perception as a valuable feedback loop. Findings The authors identified the most effective policies implemented by municipalities that excelled in indices related to the business environment. VIP enhanced students’ soft skills, including critical thinking, teamwork and community spirit. The outcomes of the VIP were effective in identifying public policies aimed at social transformation. Practical implications This study’s findings offer significant insights for HEI managers, guiding them in adopting interdisciplinary pedagogical practices. These practices, in turn, foster sustainable development within both internal and external communities. Furthermore, the empirical study’s focus on improving local community governance can potentially enhance the local business environment. Originality/value Literature emphasizing the social dimension of sustainability in HEIs is scarce, particularly those practices related to teaching, research and extension linked to projects aimed at community sustainability. This study introduces interdisciplinary practices encouraging student involvement in addressing tangible issues and searching for solutions to community problems.

Readiness for sustainable accreditation management in higher education institutions: A mixed-method study in Indonesia

Obtaining an excellent accreditation rank in various study programs has become an urgency for universities in Indonesia because accreditation rankings are believed to have an impact on the provision of quality education. However, not all universities are able to achieve an excellent accreditation rank for all of the study programs they manage. This research aims to determine the readiness of the accreditation teams in managing accreditation in various study programs. The mixed method is used, with an explanatory sequential design. The participants involved are university leaders and accreditation teams in various study programs. The research results showed that an excellent accreditation rating cannot be achieved with ordinary organizational behavior but requires great effort, care, and commitment from both the leaders and the accreditation team. It also requires active and comprehensive participation from the academic community. The excellent rank in accreditation can only be obtained with superior effort and care. It is suggested that the readiness of the leaders and accreditation teams to manage accreditation optimally is a crucial aspect in achieving an excellent rating. In conclusion, there are at least three important aspects to consider in the accreditation process in order to achieve an excellent rank: the need to achieve the highest assessment, the effort and care needed to significantly impact the highest assessment, and the institution needs to ensure a quality culture through quality assurance and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Knowledge entrepreneurship in higher education institutions: a perspective of knowledge sharing and entrepreneurial leadership in Pakistani HEIs

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to contribute to the research of knowledge management in higher education institutions (HEIs) by studying the enablers of knowledge entrepreneurship. Anchored in the dynamic capability theory, knowledge entrepreneurship is heterogeneously distributed in HEIs and is critical for the sustenance of organizations in the knowledge economy. This aim is realized by understanding the determinants of knowledge entrepreneurship and empirically investigating the relationship of knowledge-sharing behaviour and entrepreneurial leadership with knowledge entrepreneurship.Design/methodology/approachData was collected through structured questionnaires from 550 faculty members of HEIs in Pakistan by adequately representing the sample size through regional stratification and proportionate sampling. Data was analyzed through the Analysis of Moment Structures software where the data validation and reliability were achieved using correlations, confirmatory factor analysis and structured equation modelling to generate generalizable results.FindingsThe findings revealed that knowledge sharing is an important component in developing knowledge entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial leadership is pivotal in providing the support, vision and autonomy to individuals with personal and professional capabilities to ensure the creation of new knowledge, collaboration and innovation.Research limitations/implicationsThe study contributes to an understanding of relationship of knowledge sharing and entrepreneurial leadership that leads to promotion of knowledge entrepreneurship in HEIs of Pakistan. In addition, the findings of the study extend the existing literature on knowledge entrepreneurship by offering the positive mediating role of entrepreneurial leadership in the universities of Pakistan, hence, addressing the specific challenges and opportunities faced by the HEIs of a developing country like Pakistan. The theoretical framework of the study elucidates the importance of knowledge sharing and entrepreneurial leadership by using the dynamic capabilities theory and extends the scope of the aforementioned theory in entrepreneurial leadership realm.Practical implicationsBy generating an understanding of the dynamics of knowledge entrepreneurship this study tries to help policymakers and educational leaders to develop strategies to cultivate a culture of knowledge sharing and entrepreneurial leadership in Pakistani HEIs. Building the entrepreneurial ecosystem entails prioritizing knowledge creation, knowledge sharing and retention that can lead to innovative solutions for local and global challenges.Originality/valueThe study used dynamic capabilities theory to link the knowledge and resources together for the education sector for sustainable outcomes in the knowledge economy. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to empirically study the behaviour of HEIs to create and support knowledge entrepreneurship in the presence of entrepreneurial leadership in the context of a developing country, Pakistan. Becoming a knowledge-based society will help Pakistan upgrade itself to the list of developed countries.

Study on the Application of Error Back-Propagation Algorithm Applied to the Student Status Management in Higher Education Institutions

The objective of this work is to predict the employment rate of students based on the information in the SSM (student status management) in colleges and universities. Firstly, the relevant content of SSM is introduced. Secondly, the BP (Back Propagation) neural network, the LM (Levenberg Marquardt) algorithm, and the BR (Bayesian Regularization) algorithm are introduced. In addition, the LM algorithm is combined with the BR algorithm to optimize the BP neural network, so as to establish a prediction model of the employment rate of college graduates based on the LM-BP neural network (the established prediction model). Finally, the established prediction model is verified after the historical data of college students in the SSM are managed and processed using the big data analysis technology. It suggests that the established prediction model shows higher prediction accuracy, more stable prediction performance, more ideal prediction effect, and higher practical application value.

Impact of Intellectual Capital and Organisational Culture on Financial Performance: Mediation by Knowledge Management in Higher Education Institutions in Libya

Purpose: Sustained volatility has worse affected, again, the already, noteworthy decline in the financial performance of Libya’s higher education system since the year 2011. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual frame work that would help in understanding the factors that affects the financial position of Libyan university. Design/Methodology/Approach: The intended study will adopt a quantitative research approach and data collection tool for the study will be through a questionnaire survey. The participants of the sample will be the people occupying the positions of directors of the Office of Administrative and Financial Affairs, chiefs and senior managers of financial departments, accountants, auditors, and other officials engaged in financial administration. All the information collected from the survey shall be tested by structural equation modeling (SEM) in the AMOS program. Findings: This study significantly advances our understanding of how organizational culture, knowledge management, and intellectual capital impact the financial performance of higher education institutions in Libya. The findings provide actionable insights and tools for financial stakeholders, policymakers, and decision-makers to enhance financial performance within these institutions effectively. Implications/Originality/Value: This study aims to address the existing gaps in the present literature on organizational culture, knowledge management, intellectual capital, and their influence on financial performance in higher education. The study's results will have practical ramifications for financial professionals, regulators, and stakeholders, providing useful insights and methods to improve the financial performance of Libyan higher education institutions

Knowledge Management in the Literature From 2021 to 2024

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted knowledge management in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Studies have found that material, financial, and human resources are the key factors in the knowledge network, and mistrust often exists between decision-makers and those who carry out the work. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between knowledge management and trust by conducting a cross-sectional, exploratory, and correlational study with a sample of 10 professional practitioners and social workers involved in COVID-19 care. The study findings show that innovation, competitiveness, and efficiency are the central, unifying, and structural axes of information translation and knowledge transfer. These results are not extensive to the university community, and they are innovative because they highlight the importance of trust as the guiding principle of knowledge management.

Funding and Library Resource Management in Higher Education Universities in India

Libraries are regarded as vast repositories of information that have accumulated from academic works throughout time. These preserves contain intellectual information and convey it to future generations. This study discusses the current portrayal of government and private efforts in higher education and the involvement of libraries in advancing the use of these initiatives for teaching, research, and extension activities in Higher Educational Institutions (HEI). This research conducted a comparative analysis of libraries' financing and resource management in Indian HEI. The empirical investigation used a questionnaire-based research design. The research used a sample size of 100, selected by the purposeful sampling method. The questionnaire served as the primary tool for gathering data. The insights gained were analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The examination showed that the noticed funding source significantly impacted various aspects of university libraries in India. This includes the distribution of knowledge resources, the preservation of library amenities, accessibility to human resources, and the provisioning of library amenities. These data suggest that librarians should consider other financing methods, if needed, to enhance their services. Additional endeavors should be undertaken to tackle the problems of the growth of human resources, acquisition of facilities, and their subsequent upkeep. Ultimately, it is crucial to include the university librarian in the strategic planning of HEI.

Analyzing the Evolution of Research on Student Awareness of Solid Waste Management in Higher Education Institutions: A Bibliometric Perspective

Improper solid waste management (SWM) has resulted in an environmental and epidemiological catastrophe, emphasizing the urgency of SWM due to escalating solid waste generation. Over the past few decades, there has been significant growth in publications studying the relationship between SWM and the environment. Higher education institutes (HEIs) also have a social responsibility to promote public understanding of SWM and to increase awareness among students about SWM. A bibliometric analysis was conducted to provide an overview of research on student awareness of SWM in HEIs over the past 35 years. Data on publication output are identified based on the Scopus database (from 1989 to 2024). A total of 634 articles on SWM awareness and practices among students in HEIs were identified. VOSviewer was used to map the current studies and visualize the current trends in this area. The analysis of keywords used in the publications highlights recurring terms such as “recycling”, “environmental awareness”, and “waste management”, indicating the primary research focus. The results show a significant increase in publications in this area over the last 35 years. China, the US, and the UK emerge as the countries with the highest number of publications with 115, 82, and 44 publications, respectively, where China alone contributed 18.14% of the total publications on the topic, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tsinghua University being the leading institutions in this research field. The results also highlight the top researchers in the field of student awareness of SWM in HEIs. It identifies influential journals in this field, such as Sustainability (MDPI) and the Journal of Cleaner Production (Elsevier). Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the current state of research on student awareness of SWM in HEIs, identifying research hotspots. It serves as a valuable resource for academics and practitioners interested in this area. The findings of the study are intended to guide researchers planning to conduct further research on the issue.
