Management of physical and psychological trauma resulting from motor vehicle crashes in Australian general practice: a mixed-methods approach

BackgroundIn Australia, motor vehicle crashes (MVC)-related health data are available from insurance claims and hospitals but not from primary care settings. This study aimed to identify the frequency of MVC-related consultations in Australian general practices, explore the pharmacological management of health conditions related to those crashes, and investigate general practitioners’ (GPs) perceived barriers and enablers in managing these patients.MethodsMixed-methods study. The quantitative component explored annual MVC-related consultation rates over seven years, the frequency of chronic pain, depression, anxiety or sleep issues after MVC, and management with opioids, antidepressants, anxiolytics or sedatives in a sample of 1,438,864 patients aged 16 + years attending 402 Australian general practices (MedicineInsight). Subsequently, we used content analysis of 81 GPs’ qualitative responses to an online survey that included some of our quantitative findings to explore their experiences and attitudes to managing patients after MVC.ResultsMVC-related consultation rates remained stable between 2012 and 2018 at around 9.0 per 10,000 consultations. In 2017/2018 compared to their peers, those experiencing a MVC had a higher frequency of chronic pain (48% vs. 26%), depression/anxiety (20% vs. 13%) and sleep issues (7% vs. 4%). In general, medications were prescribed more after MVC. Opioid prescribing was much higher among patients after MVC than their peers, whether they consulted for chronic pain (23.8% 95%CI 21.6;26.0 vs. 15.2%, 95%CI 14.5;15.8 in 2017/2018, respectively) or not (15.8%, 95%CI 13.9;17.6 vs. 6.7%, 95% CI 6.4;7.0 in 2017/2018). Qualitative analyses identified a lack of guidelines, local referral pathways and decision frameworks as critical barriers for GPs to manage patients after MVC. GPs also expressed interest in having better access to management tools for specific MVC-related consequences (e.g., whiplash/seatbelt injuries, acute/chronic pain management, mental health issues).ConclusionChronic pain, mental health issues and the prescription of opioids were more frequent among patients experiencing MVC. This reinforces the relevance of appropriate management to limit the physical and psychological impact of MVC. GPs identified a lack of available resources (e.g. education, checklists and management support tools) for managing MVC-related consequences, and the need for local referral pathways and specific guidelines to escalate treatments.

Engineering the Signal Resolution of a Paper-Based Cell-Free Glutamine Biosensor with Genetic Engineering, Metabolic Engineering, and Process Optimization.

Specialized cancer treatments have the potential to exploit glutamine dependence to increase patient survival rates. Glutamine diagnostics capable of tracking a patient's response to treatment would enable a personalized treatment dosage to optimize the tradeoff between treatment success and dangerous side effects. Current clinical glutamine testing requires sophisticated and expensive lab-based tests, which are not broadly available on a frequent, individualized basis. To address the need for a low-cost, portable glutamine diagnostic, this work engineers a cell-free glutamine biosensor to overcome assay background and signal-to-noise limitations evident in previously reported studies. The findings from this work culminate in the development of a shelf-stable, paper-based, colorimetric glutamine test with a high signal strength and a high signal-to-background ratio for dramatically improved signal resolution. While the engineered glutamine test is important progress towards improving the management of cancer and other health conditions, this work also expands the assay development field of the promising cell-free biosensing platform, which can facilitate the low-cost detection of a broad variety of target molecules with high clinical value.

Unraveling the Pharmacological Marvels of “Aqarqarha”- Exploring its Phytochemistry and Therapeutic Prospects

Anacyclus pyrethrum, commonly known as “Aqarqarha” in Unani medicine has been a prominent herb in traditional medicine systems for centuries due to its diverse therapeutic properties. In recent years, there has been growing interest in exploring its medicinal uses and pharmacological effects. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Aqarqarha, encompassing its traditional uses, phytochemical composition, pharmacological activities, and potential therapeutic applications. Aqarqarha exhibits a wide array of pharmacological activities, including neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, aphrodisiac, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, making it a promising candidate for the management of various health conditions. Moreover, its phytochemical profile comprises various bioactive compounds such as alkamides, sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, and polyacetylenes, which contribute to its medicinal properties. This review aims to consolidate the existing knowledge on Aqarqarha, providing a basis for further research and development in both traditional and modern medicine. Furthermore, it highlights gaps in current knowledge and identifies areas for future research, such as clinical trials, mechanistic studies, formulation development, and regulatory considerations. By synthesizing existing information and proposing future directions, this review seeks to facilitate a deeper understanding of Aqarqarha's therapeutic potential and promote its integration into evidence-based healthcare practices.

Pilot Testing of Useful Tools' Validity for Frailty Assessment in Greece: Translated PRISMA-7 Tool, Modified Fried Criteria and Clinical Frailty Scale.

The importance of frailty in older people is getting constant recognition as an important aspect both in terms of public health, as well as at a personal level, for the appropriate management of an older person's health condition. This is reflected by the continuously increasing number of research studies carried out in several settings across different countries. Sometimes, this is very solid, but in other cases, there is a considerable gap in terms of accurate and well-grounded documentation of frailty status. This is the case in Greece, where we are missing clinically validated tools to approach frailty. We are missing frailty screening tools, such as, for instance, Program of Research on Integration of Services for the Maintenance of Autonomy 7 (PRISMA 7), the gold standard tool of Fried criteria, is somehow problematic since the question referring to physical activity originates from a questionnaire that has not been translated and validated, while Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) has been validated for translation but not for the capacity to detect frailty. The aim of this study is to validate these tools for their accuracy to detect frailty by using a measurable index of frailty, previously proposed for use in clinical studies: the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Seventy-four male and female participants (mean age 80.47 years SD = ±7.45 years, minimum-maximum age = 65-95) have been evaluated for their frailty status using different tools. We observed that the PRISMA 7 translation detects frailty only when one question is removed at a cut-off of ≥2 and indicates a sensitivity of 88.1% and specificity of 99.9% with a good correlation with SPPB measurements (r = -0.858; p < 0.001). When CFS was validated using SPPB, it demonstrated a very good correlation (r = -0.838; p < 0.001 respectively) as was the case for the modified Fried Criteria (r = -0.725; p < 0.001). All items demonstrated a good correlation between them. We here propose that we can accurately assess frailty status in the community setting by using a modified version of Fried criteria, Clinical Frailty Scale translation in Greek, and we can screen for frailty by using the Greek translation of PRISMA 7 only after removing item 6 of the questionnaire.

Disabled content creators on OnlyFans: Empowerment, representation, and precarity

Through a content analysis of 10 news articles and 22 Reddit threads focused on disability and OnlyFans, we investigate the experiences of disabled content creators in this dynamic digital landscape. OnlyFans has emerged as a promising employment option for people with disabilities, offering financial stability, independence, and a newfound sense of career control. However, concerns persist regarding potential impacts on disability-related benefits, highlighting the need for clearer support mechanisms. Furthermore, the platform has redefined power dynamics, allowing creators to reclaim agency over their narratives, particularly during the pandemic. It has not only transformed financial prospects but also served as a tool for managing health conditions and boosting self-confidence. These findings underscore OnlyFans’ role in fostering inclusivity and financial empowerment for disabled individuals. Our analysis also unveils broader societal challenges linked to disability and sexuality, including the de-sexualization and hypersexualization of disabled individuals. This emphasizes the urgency of cultivating a more inclusive understanding of sexuality and consent. Additionally, the fetishization of disabled people, termed “devotees,” adds complexity to the conversation, underlining the importance of respecting autonomy. By shedding light on this underexplored intersection, our research seeks to contribute to a more informed discourse on disability, digital content creation, and online platforms. Ultimately, it highlights the imperative of ongoing exploration and support for disabled content creators within the evolving digital landscape.

Economic Impact of Pharmaceutical Recommendations Carried Out in a Liver Transplant Unit of a University Hospital

Introduction: Advances in medicine have provided the possibility of organs and tissues transplantation for therapeutic purposes. Transplant patients, in addition to immunosuppressive therapy, mostly undergo treatment for other comorbidities, and this polypharmacy makes the role of the pharmacist extremely important to ensure patient safety and adherence. Through pharmaceutical recommendations, the professional can reduce morbidity and mortality and thus reduce healthcare costs. Methods: This is an observational, retrospective descriptive study, carried out from January 2021 to December 2022, aiming to analyze the economic impact of pharmaceutical recommendations made in a liver transplant unit of an university hospital. Data collection took place from May to August 2023 through the institution’s clinical pharmacy database. The economic impact was classified as effectiveness increased (EI), cost reduction (RC), and avoided risk (AR) calculated through a methodology developed and adapted to the study’s reality. Medication acquisition costs were verified through the hospital’s own system, and the values were adjusted according to inflation in June 2023. Results: A total of363 pharmaceutical recommendations (PR) were conducted, of which the EI represented 64% (n = 231), followed by RC (20%, n = 72) and risk avoided (16%, n = 60). The total resulting value corrected by the Índice Nacional de Preços ao Consumidor Amplo (IPCA) was R$ 179,223.31, with the AE at R$ 140,414.04 and the RC at R$ 38,809.27. Conclusion: The importance of the clinical pharmacist in the multidisciplinary team is evident through the improvement of patient monitoring and health condition management. Through this study, we can perceive that the PR presented had a considerable financial impact, and, through the optimization of pharmacotherapy for transplant patients, an increase in therapeutic EI was obtained. The importance of developing further studies showing the impact of the quality of care provided by the pharmacy’s performance is clear, to further highlight the importance of this field for healthcare assistance.

Whole-cycle management of women with epilepsy of child-bearing age: ontology construction and application.

The effective management of epilepsy in women of child-bearing age necessitates a concerted effort from multidisciplinary teams. Nevertheless, there exists an inadequacy in the seamless exchange of knowledge among healthcare providers within this context. Consequently, it is imperative to enhance the availability of informatics resources and the development of decision support tools to address this issue comprehensively. The development of the Women with Epilepsy of Child-Bearing Age Ontology (WWECA) adhered to established ontology construction principles. The ontology's scope and universal terminology were initially established by the development team and subsequently subjected to external evaluation through a rapid Delphi consensus exercise involving domain experts. Additional entities and attribute annotation data were sourced from authoritative guideline documents and specialized terminology databases within the respective field. Furthermore, the ontology has played a pivotal role in steering the creation of an online question-and-answer system, which is actively employed and assessed by a diverse group of multidisciplinary healthcare providers. WWECA successfully integrated a total of 609 entities encompassing various facets related to the diagnosis and medication for women of child-bearing age afflicted with epilepsy. The ontology exhibited a maximum depth of 8 within its hierarchical structure. Each of these entities featured three fundamental attributes, namely Chinese labels, definitions, and synonyms. The evaluation of WWECA involved 35 experts from 10 different hospitals across China, resulting in a favorable consensus among the experts. Furthermore, the ontology-driven online question and answer system underwent evaluation by a panel of 10 experts, including neurologists, obstetricians, and gynecologists. This evaluation yielded an average rating of 4.2, signifying a positive reception and endorsement of the system's utility and effectiveness. Our ontology and the associated online question and answer system hold the potential to serve as a scalable assistant for healthcare providers engaged in the management of women with epilepsy (WWE). In the future, this developmental framework has the potential for broader application in the context of long-term management of more intricate chronic health conditions.

The Development and Testing of the Hippocratic Heart Failure Self-Care Scale.

The adoption of self-care behaviors among patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) is essential for the management of their health condition. However, there is a lack of tools for estimating self-care in CHF patients. We aim to develop and validate the Greek version of the Hippocratic heart failure self-care scale (HHFSCS). The scale includes 22 items which are reviewed by a committee of experts. Individuals indicate the frequency at which they follow each self-behavior on a five-point Likert scale. Adult patients with CHF (n = 250) from a General Hospital in Athens participated in the study from June 2020 to March 2021. Reliability coefficients and an explanatory factor analysis (EFA), using a Varimax rotation and the principal component method, were used to assess the psychometric measurements. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the HHFSCS was 0.807. The exploratory factor analysis identified two domains that accounted for 88.44% of the variance in the scale items; however, each sub-scale could not be used as an independent scale. Finally, the test-retest showed a significant and strong correlation (r = 0.973, p < 0.001). The HHFSCS is a reliable and valid tool for assessing self-behaviors in CHF patients. Health professionals can use it in their clinical practice to improve the management of a patient's health conditions.

Health Care Utilization and Direct Costs Prior to Subspecialty Care in Children with Chronic Pain Compared with Other Chronic Childhood Diseases: A Cohort Study

ObjectivesTo understand the burden associated with pediatric chronic pain (CP) on the healthcare system compared with other costly chronic diseases prior to subspecialty care. Study designIn this retrospective cohort study, we assessed all-cause healthcare utilization and direct healthcare costs associated with pediatric CP (n=91) compared with juvenile-onset arthritis (JA, n=135), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, n=90), type 1 or type 2 diabetes (T1D, n=475, T2D, n=289), anxiety (n=7,193) and controls (n=273) two and five years prior to patients entering subspecialty care in Manitoba, Canada. Linked data from physician encounters, emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and prescriptions were extracted from administrative databases. Differences in healthcare utilization and direct healthcare costs associated with CP versus the other conditions were tested using negative binomial and zero-inflated negative binomial regression models, respectively. ResultsAfter adjustment for age at diagnosis, sex, location of residence, and socioeconomic status, CP continued to be associated with the highest number of consulted physicians and subspecialists and the highest number of physician billings compared with all other conditions (p<0.01, respectively). CP was significantly associated with higher physician costs than JA, IBD, T1D, T2D, or controls (p<0.01, respectively); anxiety was associated with the highest physician and prescription costs among all cohorts (p<0.01, respectively). ConclusionCompared with chronic inflammatory and endocrinologic conditions, pediatric CP and anxiety were associated with substantial burden on the healthcare system prior to subspecialty care, suggesting a need to assess gaps and resources in the management of CP and mental health conditions in the primary care setting.

Seed priming by cold scarification and Moringa-based bio-stimulant on the germination of Artemisia afra

Artemisia afra is a frequently utilized medicinal plant in diverse cultural traditions for the management of various health conditions. Despite its natural habitat, limited efforts have been dedicated to its systematic cultivation, resulting in a paucity of documented information concerning its seed biology and germination characteristics. This study aimed to determine the effect of different temperatures, scarification, light conditions and priming with biostimulant on the seed germination of Artemisia afra. The seeds were exposed to different scarification methods including rubbing (sandpaper), hot and cold-water soaking, acid (H2SO4) and fermentation (EM) and compared with untreated seeds (control). Photoperiods included constant light, alternating light (16/8 hours) and continuous darkness at 15 °C, 25 °C and 35 °C. Results revealed that 25 °C temperature significantly improved germination while no germination was obtained at 15°C and 35°C. Hot and cold-water scarification resulted in improved germination. There was no germination observed for fermented seeds in all the experiments. In photoperiod, the highest germination percentage of 70 % was observed under alternating light. Using Moringa based biostimulant under alternating light conditions at 25 °C resulted in improved MGT. The information generated from this study will contribute to bridging the scientific gap by generating information on optimum requirements for propagating A. afra through seeds.

An autonomous wheelchair with health monitoring system based on Internet of Thing

Assistive powered wheelchairs will bring patients and elderly the ability of remain mobile without the direct intervention from caregivers. Vital signs from users can be collected and analyzed remotely to allow better disease prevention and proactive management of health and chronic conditions. This research proposes an autonomous wheelchair prototype system integrated with biophysical sensors based on Internet of Thing (IoT). A powered wheelchair system was developed with three biophysical sensors to collect, transmit and analysis users’ four vital signs to provide real-time feedback to users and clinicians. A user interface software embedded with the cloud artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms was developed for the data visualization and analysis. An improved data compression algorithm Minimalist, Adaptive and Streaming R-bit (O-MAS-R) was proposed to achieve a higher compression ratio with minimum 7.1%, maximum 45.25% compared with MAS algorithm during the data transmission. At the same time, the prototype wheelchair, accompanied with a smart-chair app, assimilates data from the onboard sensors and characteristics features within the surroundings in real-time to achieve the functions including obstruct laser scanning, autonomous localization, and point-to-point route planning and moving within a predefined area. In conclusion, the wheelchair prototype uses AI algorithms and navigation technology to help patients and elderly maintain their independent mobility and monitor their healthcare information in real-time.

Online health information seeking behavior, healthcare access, and health status during exceptional times

Online health information seeking behavior (e-HISB) is becoming increasingly common and the trend has accelerated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic when individuals strongly relied upon the Internet to stay informed by becoming exposed to a wider array of health information. Despite e-HISB having become a global trend, very few empirical investigations have analyzed its potential influence on healthcare access and individuals’ health status. In this paper, we try to fill this gap. We use data from the second SHARE Corona Survey, supplemented with data from the previous 8th wave of SHARE, and estimate a recursive model of e-HISB, healthcare access, and individuals’ health status that accounts for individuals’ unobserved heterogeneity. Our findings suggest that e-HISB can empower individuals to better understand health concerns, facilitating improved health condition management. However, e-HISB can also trigger a chain reaction, as navigating vast amonts of online health information can heighten fear and anxiety. This increased anxiety may lead to higher utilization of medical services, adversely affecting individuals' perceptions of their health.

Older adults experience of transition to the community from the emergency department: a qualitative evidence synthesis

AimOlder adults comprise a growing proportion of Emergency Department (ED) attendees and are vulnerable to adverse outcomes following an ED visit including ED reattendance within 30 days. Interventions to reduce older adults’ risk of adverse outcomes following an ED attendance are proliferating and often focus on improving the transition from the ED to the community. To optimise the effectiveness of interventions it is important to determine how older adults experience the transition from the ED to the community. This study aims to systematically review and synthesise qualitative studies reporting older adults’ experiences of transition to the community from the ED.MethodsSix databases (Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, and Social Science Full Text) were searched in March 2022 and 2023. A seven-step approach to meta-ethnography, as described by Noblit and Hare, was used to synthesise findings across included studies. The methodological quality of the included studies was appraised using the 10-item Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist for qualitative research. A study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (Registration: CRD42022287990).FindingsTen studies were included, and synthesis led to the development of five themes. Unresolved symptoms reported by older adults on discharge impact their ability to manage at home (theme 1). Limited community services and unresolved symptoms drive early ED reattendance for some older adults (theme 2). Although older adults value practical support and assistance transporting home from the ED this is infrequently provided (theme 3). Accessible health information and interactions are important for understanding and self-managing health conditions on discharge from the ED (theme 4). Fragmented Care between ED and community is common, stressful and impacts on older adult’s ability to manage health conditions (theme 5). A line of argument synthesis integrated these themes into one overarching concept; after an ED visit older adults often struggle to manage changed, complex, health and care needs at home, in the absence of comprehensive support and guidance.Discussion/ conclusionKey areas for consideration in future service and intervention development are identified in this study; ED healthcare providers should adapt their communication to the needs of older adults, provide accessible information and explicitly address expectations about symptom resolution during discharge planning. Concurrently, community health services need to be responsive to older adults’ changed health and care needs after an ED visit to achieve care integration. Those developing transitional care interventions should consider older adults needs for integration of care, symptom management, clear communication and information from providers and desire to return to daily life.

The influence of motivation on the activeness of elderly people with hypertension in prolanis gymnastics activities

Introduction: Population ageing is one of the significant challenges in modern society, with the increasing number of elderly populations. Prevention and management of health conditions have become very important, and the Prolanis gymnastics program has been recognized as one of the effective methods. Motivation plays a central role in shaping health behaviours and habits. Methods: This research is quantitative with an analytical design with a sectional study design approach. The population in this study was all Prolanis Participants suffering from Hypertension, with the number of samples in the survey 41 respondents. The sampling technique used in this study was accidental sampling. Results: The Chi-square Statistical test on the influence of motivation on the participation of older adults with Hypertension in prolonged gymnastics activities obtained a p-value = 0.000 or smaller than a = 0.05 (0.000&lt;0.05). Conclusions: The influence of motivation on the activeness of older adults with Hypertension in protagonist gymnastics activities. Motivation influences the activeness of older adults with Hypertension in prolantic gymnastics activities. High motivation can be an essential factor in encouraging active participation in prolanist gymnastics programs, which in turn can support the management of hypertensive conditions and improve the well-being of older people. However, it is essential to remember that these conclusions are general and cannot be taken as absolute truth without supporting data and evidence.

Health literacy and its association with mental and spiritual well-being among women experiencing homelessness.

Low health literacy (HL) has been linked to low self-rated health, reduced efficacy of behaviour change, and challenges in preventing, treating, or managing health conditions. People experiencing homelessness are at risk of poor HL; however, few studies have investigated HL in relation to mental and spiritual well-being among people experiencing homelessness in general, or women experiencing homelessness specifically. This cross-sectional study of 46 women experiencing homelessness in Stockholm, Sweden, recruited during the period October 2019-December 2020, aimed to examine how HL was associated with mental and spiritual well-being among women experiencing homelessness. Participants answered questions about socio-demographic characteristics (age, length of homelessness, education) and digital technology (mobile phone/the Internet) use, in addition to Swedish language versions of three questionnaires administered through structured, face-to-face interviews: the Communicative and Critical Health Literacy Scale, the General Health Questionnaire 12 and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being. Data were analysed using linear regression, which revealed statistically significant associations between HL and mental well-being (p = .009), and between HL and spiritual well-being (p = .022). However, neither socio-demographic characteristics nor digital technology use were significantly associated with HL. In conclusion, promoting HL may improve mental and spiritual well-being in this vulnerable population. An advisory board of women with lived experiences of homelessness (n = 5) supported the interpretation of the findings and emphasised the need to consider HL in relation to basic needs such as 'housing first'. Moreover, health information and services should be accessible to people with different degrees of HL.

Reciprocal Association Between Chronic Pain and Health Insurance Type in a Population-based Longitudinal Cohort Study

Chronic pain is a widespread condition limiting adults’ daily activities and labor force participation. In the United States, withdrawal from the workforce could be associated with loss of health insurance coverage, while lack of health insurance coverage can limit access to diagnosis and management of chronic health conditions. We used a longitudinal cohort study of middle-aged adults to investigate whether chronic pain is reciprocally associated with coverage by any insurance and type of insurance coverage over a 2-year period (2018 and 2020). Among 5,137 participants (median age of 57 years in 2018), 29% reported chronic pain in either year, while 9 to 10% were uninsured each year. Using multivariable cross-lagged logistic regression analysis, chronic pain in 2018 was not associated with having any insurance coverage in 2020, and lack of coverage in 2018 was not associated with chronic pain in 2020. In further analysis, we determined that public coverage, other (non-private) coverage, or no coverage in 2018 were associated with an increased risk of chronic pain in 2020; while chronic pain in 2018 increased the risk of coverage by public rather than private insurance 2 years later, as well as the risk of coverage by other (non-private) payors. The reciprocal association of non-private insurance coverage and chronic pain may be related to insufficient access to chronic pain treatment among publicly insured adults, or qualification for public insurance based on disability among adults with chronic pain. These results demonstrate that accounting for the type of health insurance coverage is critical when predicting chronic pain in US populations. PerspectiveIn a longitudinal cohort study of middle-aged US adults, the use of public and other non-private insurance predicts future experience of chronic pain, while past experience of chronic pain predicts future use of public and other non-private insurance.

Smartphone Application for Self-Care in Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients with Contextual Learning Model

Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an emergency problem that can cause death and disability worldwide. By using contextual learning models, smartphone applications can be an innovative solution for improving self-care and health condition management. This research aims to know the effectiveness of smartphone applications for self-care in type-2 diabetes mellitus patients with contextual learning models. Pre-test and post-test control group design was used by researchers. The study was conducted in the period October 2nd, 2023 - January 2nd, 2024. The number of samples collected using the G Power formula was 110 intervention groups and 110 control groups. To select samples, researchers used a purposive sampling method. This research involved T2DM patients treated at nine Health Centers in Kediri, Indonesia. In the smartphone application educational intervention group with the contextual learning model, there was an increase in self-care from a mean of 43,03 to 81,53, and a p-value result of 0,008 was obtained. In the control group using the booklet, there was an increase in self-care from a mean of 37,19 to 52,62, and a p-value result of 0,000 was obtained. Smartphone applications with contextual learning models are more effective in improving self-care than education using booklets; however, both types of education can improve self-care in T2DM.

The Pillars of Safety: Unveiling the Impact of Medication Usage on Public and Patient Wellbeing

Background: The comprehensive management of various health conditions within the community is heavily reliant on the crucial role of medications. Objective: The primary objective of this research is to investigate medication usage patterns, adherence, and associated factors among a diverse participant pool. The study aims to assess the prevalence of prescription medication use, consumption patterns, adherence rates, and the methods employed by participants for managing their medicines. Furthermore, the study explores participants' experiences with side effects and evaluates their satisfaction with prescribed treatments. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional design was employed for data collection, utilizing a self-administered Medication Usage Survey distributed through Google Forms. Participants were recruited through various channels, and data were collected anonymously. Results: A total of 103 participants contributed to the study, with a diverse demographic composition. The majority identified as female (60.19%), and participants spanned various age groups, reflecting a comprehensive representation. Geographically, the study included participants from multiple locations, with Bengaluru being the predominant location (80.58%). Participants reported diverse health conditions, with 69 individuals (66.99%) on prescription medications. Consumption patterns revealed that 57.3% took medications daily, while adherence varied, with 36.9% reporting missed doses. Side effects were reported by a small percentage (12.66%) of participants, and various methods were employed for managing medicines. Overall, treatment satisfaction varied among participants. Conclusion: This research provides valuable insights into medication usage patterns and associated factors among a diverse participant pool.

Exploring why individuals utilise naturopathic treatment and choose to combine naturopathy with biomedicine

IntroductionThere has been a global increase in the utilisation of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM), including that of naturopathy. Limited New Zealand research exists that has examined why individuals use naturopathic treatment, and why in some cases, naturopathy is combined with biomedicine. The present study had two main aims: (1) To identify why individuals utilise naturopathic treatment, and (2) to identify why individuals choose to combine naturopathy with biomedicine in the management of chronic health conditions or ongoing symptoms. MethodsParticipants were 20 clients who attended a student naturopathy and herbal medicine teaching clinic in Auckland, New Zealand. Participants were individually interviewed. A structured interview schedule comprising of open-ended questions was used. Data was analysed using an inductive thematic approach. ResultsFive main themes were identified in relation to why individuals utilised naturopathic treatment and combined naturopathy with biomedicine in the management of their chronic health conditions or ongoing symptoms: (1) A holistic approach, (2) a new and different approach, (3) wanting to utilise natural remedies, (4) previous use of naturopathic treatment and/or other forms of TCIM, and (5) word-of-mouth: the role of family and friends in influencing the utilisation of naturopathic treatment. ConclusionsThere was an alignment between what participants desired to seek from naturopathic treatment and the philosophy and core naturopathic treatment principles: a holistic approach to health and healing and the utilisation of natural remedies. Participants combined naturopathic treatment with biomedicine, as it allowed for the use of natural and less invasive ways in treating and managing some of their symptoms. Integration of treatment modalities allowed individuals to retain some control over how their body was treated. Previous use of naturopathy and/or other forms of TCIM influenced current utilisation of naturopathy, either for the same condition or for new condition(s). Family and friends also had a salient role in influencing individuals to seek naturopathic treatment.

Targets and Effects of Common Biocompounds of Hibiscus sabdariffa (Delphinidin-3-Sambubiosid, Quercetin, and Hibiscus Acid) in Different Pathways of Human Cells According to a Bioinformatic Assay.

The utilization of food as a therapeutic measure for various ailments has been a prevalent practice throughout history and across different cultures. This is exemplified in societies where substances like Hibiscus sabdariffa have been employed to manage health conditions like hypertension and elevated blood glucose levels. The inherent bioactive compounds found in this plant, namely, delphinidin-3-sambubioside (DS3), quercetin (QRC), and hibiscus acid (HA), have been linked to various health benefits. Despite receiving individual attention, the specific molecular targets for these compounds remain unclear. In this study, computational analysis was conducted using bioinformatics tools such as Swiss Target Prediction, ShinnyGo 0.77, KEGG, and Stringdb to identify the molecular targets, pathways, and hub genes. Supplementary results were obtained through a thorough literature search in PubMed. DS3 analysis revealed potential genetic alterations related to the metabolism of nitrogen and glucose, inflammation, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation, particularly impacting the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. QRC analysis demonstrated interconnected targets spanning multiple pathways, with some overlap with DS3 analysis and a particular focus on pathways related to cancer. HA analysis revealed distinct targets, especially those associated with pathways related to the nervous system. These findings emphasize the necessity for focused research on the molecular effects of DS3, QRC, and HA, thereby providing valuable insights into potential therapeutic pathways.
