UNDERLYING AND RANKING FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO CONSTRUCTION WASTE GENERATION IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

In recent decades, there has been a notable upswing in the production of construction and waste, posing significant challenges to the construction industry and jeopardizing environmental sustainability. The successful implementation of construction and demolition waste management (CDWM) strategies is hindered by various barriers within the construction industry. Addressing this issue requires identifying and prioritizing key factors contributing to waste generation. Consequently, this study seeks to pinpoint and assess the factors influencing construction waste generation in the Turkish construction sector. Initially, a systematic literature review was conducted, resulting in the identification of 54 factors. Subsequently, a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire was administered to project architects, project engineers, site supervisors, and contractors within the Turkish construction industry, with 162 respondents. The collected data underwent reliability analyses using SPSS 22 software. Following this, index of relative importance (IRI) analyses was employed to rank the identified factors. Ultimately, this study establishes the most significant factors responsible for construction waste generation in the Turkish construction industry.

An evaluation model for city-scale construction and demolition waste management effectiveness: A case study in China

The growing generation of construction and demolition waste (CDW) has emerged as a prominent challenge on global environmental agendas. However, the effectiveness of CDW management (CDWM) strategies varies among cities. Existing literature predominantly evaluates the effectiveness of CDWM at the project level, offering a localized perspective that fails to capture a city’s comprehensive CDWM profile. This localized focus has certain limitations. To fill this gap in city-scale evaluations, this study introduces a novel model for assessing CDWM effectiveness at the municipal level. An empirical investigation was conducted across 11 cities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to operationalize this model. The model defines five distinct levels of CDWM effectiveness. Findings indicate that Hong Kong consistently achieves the highest level (level I), while the majority of cities fall within levels III and IV. This pattern suggests that CDWM effectiveness in the GBA is moderately developed, with uneven progress in CDW management outcomes and supporting systems. Essentially, there is a lack of synchronous development of CDWM results and guarantee systems. The proposed evaluation model enriches existing CDWM research field and offers a framework that may inform future studies in other countries.

Examining the Challenges for Circular Economy Implementation in Construction and Demolition Waste Management: A Comprehensive Review Using Systematic Methods

The construction industry accounts for approximately one-third of the total waste generation globally. With the United Nations projecting a population increase of 2 billion within the next three decades, there is a heightened demand for building stock, generating unprecedented volumes of construction and demolition waste (CDW). To combat this, circular economy strategies are purported to help alleviate the prevailing situation. But a number of challenges are jeopardizing their implementation in the construction industry and preventing from achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, net zero carbon and zero avoidable waste targets. This paper systematically analyzes 54 research articles, published in the past decade within major peer-reviewed English-language scholarly publications in the form of a systematic research review. In doing so, it aims to identify and classify the challenges that prevent improved CDW management by assimilating previous research results in support of a circular economy. The classification and analysis using a PESTLE model offers insights into gaps and differences between categories, as well as regions and countries. This initial step could contribute to a better understanding of these barriers, along with associated solutions, which could result in a significant reduction on the impact of construction activities, therefore facilitating the development of an effective circular economy in the sector.

Geopolymer using different size fractions of recycled brick-based mixed demolition waste

The hike in CO2 emission from the cement industry calls for an alternative binder to cement. On the other hand, constructionand demolition waste management is a global concern. This research aims to demonstrate the complete applicability of brick-based demolition wastes in geopolymer mortar and concrete. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) was used with brick waste to improve performance. 3 M, 4 M and 6 M NaOH were used for mortar preparation, and 6 M NaOH was used for concrete tests. The performance of the geopolymer binder and mortar was compared with the control specimen. 5 % to 20 % incorporation of demolition waste powder (DWP) with GGBS was explored to find the optimum binder combination. A 10 % incorporation for 3 M and 15 % for 4 M and 6 M was found optimum. Then, 10 % to 100 % incorporation of brick sand was studied to examine the influence of brick-based demolition waste on the fresh and hardened properties of mortar. Sand: Binder: Alkaline activator was taken 3.375: 1: 0.45 for mortar. The workability of mortar varied with the increase of brick sand content. The flexural and compressive strengths were decreased with an increase in brick sand content for all molarities of NaOH; consequently, the water absorption increased with brick sand content. The maximum mortar compressive strength of 27 MPa was found for 10 % demolished sand with a 6 M alkali concentration. However, consistent results were obtained with a 4 M concentration. Geopolymer concrete from brick-based demolition waste was prepared using 6 M NaOH. The UPV result indicates the regular quality of the concrete cube, with acceptable capillary water absorption after 24 h. However, the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete could be useful for non-structural works, and therefore, further studies with higher strength of NaOH for geopolymer concrete are recommended.

Blockchain-Enabled Construction and Demolition Waste Management: Advancing Information Management for Enhanced Sustainability and Efficiency

The construction industry is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, primarily due to the generation of substantial construction and demolition waste. However, the current practices in construction and demolition waste management (CDWM) face various information management challenges that undermine their overall effectiveness. Correspondingly, this research proposes the integration of blockchain technology as a strategic solution to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of CDWM. Despite the potential of blockchain in revolutionizing CDWM, research in this area remains limited. To address such a gap, this study adopts a design science action research methodology to integrate the use of blockchain technology into CDWM. Specifically, this study has creatively introduced the blockchain-based data supply chain to address the principal–agent problem in CDWM and develop a novel blockchain-enabled framework for CDWM. Additionally, a six-layer system architecture for the blockchain-based CDWM information system has been developed. This integration holds the promise of streamlining and empowering CDWM processes and thereby improving the administration and regulation of CDWM. Notably, the utilization of blockchain technology also presents an innovative opportunity for carbon reduction and offsetting within the construction industry. This research makes a substantial contribution to the field by introducing a novel approach to address information management challenges in CDWM, thereby promoting sustainable practices in the construction industry.

BIM in construction waste management: A conceptual model based on the industry foundation classes standard

Building Information Modeling (BIM) represents an innovation in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. In the environmental context, the management of buildings through BIM contributes to preserving resources and promoting more sustainable environments. This research explores the application of BIM in construction and demolition waste (CDW) management and the sustainability of buildings. The method consisted of applying Design Science Research (DSR) to develop a conceptual information model based on the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) to meet CDW indicators and to assist in the CDW management activity. The conceptual model presented a perspective on application in CDW management and emphasized the importance of mapping information exchanges in BIM to optimize activities in civil construction. However, the results depend directly on the information available in the IFC model. The proposed conceptual model presents the potential to automate waste management with the flexibility of applying it to different phases of the construction life cycle. The results of CDW management can contribute to other types of sustainability analyses.

Pre-demolition audit as a tool for appropriate CDW management – a case study of a public building

The identification of hazardous construction and demolition waste (CDW) is crucial for the appropriate and safe waste management. The pre-demolition audit is not compulsory in all EU member states, so if the control is not strict the hazardous CDW might pollute the inert fraction and create risks for human health and environment. In Bulgaria, only some industrial sites are considered as a potential source of hazardous CDW. Classification of hazards can be difficult also because the European Waste Catalogue is not specific on the hazardous CDW (with some exceptions). For example, heavy metals are among the most dangerous substances but very often remain undiscovered or underestimated. A case study of an abandoned 100-year-old public building has been performed to illustrate the importance of the pre-demolition audit. A handheld XRF analyser is used to identify contaminated materials. Samples were taken from those materials for doing leaching tests. It was proven that there was a high content of heavy metals in different paints, on internal and external walls, and fenestration. In addition to the discussion of results, some measures to separate the hazardous coatings from the recyclable masonry and wooden waste are discussed to provide higher recovery rates for the CDW.

Environmental sustainability and cost performances of construction and demolition waste management scenarios: A case study of timber and concrete houses in Thailand

Circular economy (CE) is becoming a vital strategy to tackle two major environmental challenges of building and construction sector, viz., intensive resource consumption and massive construction and demolition waste (CDW) generation. The study assessed six circular economy scenarios for CDW management of concrete and timber houses in Thailand compared to the base case (landfill). Life cycle assessment and life cycle costing were conducted to illustrate the influence of CE strategies on environmental sustainability and cost performance. Material Circularity Indicator (MCI) was evaluated to determine the circularity performances of material use for the CE scenarios. The 100% recycling scenario resulted in 124% and 166–169% reductions of the mineral resource scarcity impact as compared to the conventional CDW management for the concrete and timber houses, respectively. For the concrete house, 100% recycling scenario resulted in the lowest life cycle costs (when combining both internal cost and externalities). On the other hand, the 100% recycling scenario of timber house would bring about the highest cost due to the energy cost. However, for the timber house, energy recovery scenario provided the lowest impact values on global warming, ozone formation, and terrestrial acidification. The internal costs of implementing the CE measures are higher for timber than for concrete. The MCI value for 100% recycling scenario was about 0.55; however, it can be increased to 0.73 (timber house) and 0.75 (concrete house) if the utility lifetime of building materials were extended. The results show the integrating the CE for CDW management can bring benefit to both environmental sustainability and cost performance.

Case Study on the Application of New Technologies for Construction Waste Management in a Historic Building in Jalisco, Mexico

This article presents a comprehensive examination of a case study conducted at the “Catedral de Santa María de la Asunción” in Jalisco, Mexico. The focus is on innovative strategies for the management of construction waste in historic buildings. In this context, the scope of the research, the purpose of exploring new methodologies, the existing gap in waste management practices, the implications of implementing advanced technologies, and the need to adopt sustainable approaches in the preservation of architectural heritage are discussed. The analysis examines the deterioration and degradation of construction materials, emphasizing the significance of advanced methodologies in waste management to mitigate these effects. A comprehensive two‐ and three‐dimensional study has been carried out using Revit, a state‐of‐the‐art technology, to improve precision and accuracy in quantifying waste. The intervention parameters are quantified and classified according to the codification of the European Waste List (LER), thus facilitating the implementation of efficient waste management practices and closing the identified gap in current practices. Subsequently, the sorted materials are integrated into the toolkit, which allows for the assessment of pollution levels and the assessment of the feasibility of reusing construction and demolition waste (CDW). This toolkit offers practical solutions for sustainable waste management. The recovery process, which encompasses recycling, recycling, or landfilling, ensures a nuanced and sustainable approach to CDW management within the study area. This approach has positive implications for the conservation of historical heritage and the reduction of environmental impact. The necessity for the design and implementation of innovative sustainable construction strategies becomes evident, and each project benefits from the use of advanced design and modeling software, such as Revit and its toolkit. These indispensable tools facilitate effective sorting based on LER coding, thereby streamlining waste management practices and helping to bridge the gap between current practices and sustainable best practices. Furthermore, the study concludes that materials from demolished architectural heritage can be reused in the creative design of new sustainable buildings, underscoring the importance of adopting integrated approaches to heritage conservation and sustainable urban development. This is consistent with contemporary ethical frameworks that emphasize conservation and sustainability, advocating for the reduction of resource consumption and demolition waste. This approach effectively balances the production of materials, consumption during construction and restoration, and the utilization of essential natural resources for both historic and new buildings, driving a positive transformation in the construction industry toward environmental sustainability and cultural heritage conservation.

On The Path towards Sustainable Construction—The Case of the United Arab Emirates: A Review

The construction sector in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expanding substantially due to many variables, including strong economic growth, a swiftly growing population, and continuous modernization endeavors. As a result, the development of the construction industry is leading to adverse impacts on energy consumption and environmental conditions. The UAE government and policymakers have implemented significant initiatives to advance sustainable infrastructure, promote clean energy utilization, effectively manage construction and demolition waste (CDW), and foster green building development. These measures follow the nation’s dedication to the Paris Agreement, which aims to decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The article comprehensively examines the policies and practices implemented in this industrialized nation concerning sustainable construction. Moreover, the primary objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the UAE in comparison to other countries within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) concerning their accomplishments in sustainability. Additionally, the study seeks to integrate insights from the global community regarding sustainability policies, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the effective management of CDW, and the implementation of green regulations that govern environmentally conscious construction practices. A comprehensive analysis of information sources from official websites, particularly those of the ministry and key government agencies, is conducted to better understand the current sustainability policies and treatment methods related to the management of CDW and green building regulations.

Machine-learning-assisted classification of construction and demolition waste fragments using computer vision: Convolution versus extraction of selected features

Improper sorting of construction and demolition waste (CDW) leads to significant environmental and economic implications, including inefficient resource use and missed recycling opportunities. To address this, we developed a machine-learning-assisted procedure for recognizing CDW fragments using an RGB camera. Our approach uniquely leverages selected feature extraction, enhancing classification speed and accuracy. We employed three classifiers: convolutional neural network (CNN), gradient boosting (GB) decision trees, and multi-layer perception (MLP). Notably, our method’s extraction of selected features for GB and MLP outperformed the traditional CNN in terms of speed and accuracy, especially for challenging samples with similar textures. Specifically, while convolution resulted in an overall accuracy of 85.9%, our innovative feature extraction approach yielded accuracies up to 92.3%. This study’s findings have significant implications for the future of CDW management, offering a pathway for efficient and accurate waste sorting, fostering sustainable resource use, and reducing the environmental impact of CDW disposal. Supplementary materials, including datasets, codes, and models, are provided, promoting transparency and reproducibility.

Circularity Outlines in the Construction and Demolition Waste Management: A Literature Review

This study provides a comprehensive view of the research field of construction and demolition waste (CDW) management in the circular economy based on a literature review. The increased intensity of interest is due to the need to create frameworks, mechanisms, and tools for the process of mind-shifting towards circularity. Research topics, researched life cycle stages, strategies for CDW management, sustainability assessment, building stock quantification, assessment tools and forecast methods, materials with CDW content, waste treatment solutions, and the barriers and drivers for efficient waste management in the construction industry are identified as the main concerns in the analyzed research field. The results show that a major concern in the academic field directs research to the path of innovative strategy elaboration, identifying the enablers and barriers in CDW management, computational tool creation for design and assessment, building stock modeling, and circular building material development. The environmental approach prevails, leaving economic and social assessments in CDW management uncovered. Although stakeholders’ involvement is stressed in most cases, strategies for awareness-raising and education for a sustainable circular activity in the field are lacking. The circularity of CDW management being a multifaceted and multi-disciplinary complex challenge, it is approached on different levels. This study introduces the novelty of structuring the trends of existing knowledge in a holistic view, identifying the research directions, dimensions, specific aspects, and instruments.

How construction and demolition waste management has addressed sustainable development goals: Exploring academic and industrial trends

With the rapid growth of the construction industry and urbanization, the construction and demolition waste (CDW) has constituted the most major solid waste flow in the world. The unsustainable management of CDW causes serious societal and environmental issues, as well as leads to resource waste, which directly and indirectly impact on United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Due to the awareness of the destructive effect by CDW, the academic and industry have devoted to offer a sustainable pathway for CDWM, which characterizes minimizing carbon footprints as well as proposing circular approaches. In this context, CDW can be reused, recycled and recovery as a value resource. Therefore, this study proposed a unique research method that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches in the form of bigdata analysis and machine learning, which aims to explore the CDWM related knowledge and innovation from academic and industrial perspective respectively. Especially, what is different trends in CDWM-related of academia and industry between pre- and post-SDGs declaration era(s)? What aspects of SDGs have been addressed by academia and industry in pre- and post-SDGs declaration era(s)? The study witnessed that a 350% increase in the growth of academic literature and a 278% increase in the growth in industrial patents compared to pre-SDGs declaration period. In the academia, the emerging topics of research has shifted to management, circular economy, life cycle assessment, and ETC. Similarly, patent citation illustrated that the attention of stakeholders on CDWM in the construction industry has shifted from a linear point to a circular view. Moreover, the result showed that SDG6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) have noted as most seriously addressed concerns by academia and industry.

Organophosphate esters in inert landfill soil: A case study.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) used as flame retardants and plasticizers are additives in building and construction materials, decorations, furniture, electronic equipment, among other applications. The presence of materials containing these substances in construction and demolition waste (CDW) from weak waste management practices can result in environmental contamination. In this study, OPEs' presence in soil samples collected from a CDW landfill in Brazil was evaluated. Soil samples were collected in areas adjacent to CDW from an inert landfill, and the samples were analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The OPEs were detected in all soil samples at quantifiable concentrations ranging from 21 to 251 ng g-1, and detected compounds were tris(phenyl) phosphate, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate, tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate, tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate. The presence of these compounds in a CDW landfill is probably due to the lack of control of the materials sent to and deposited in the landfill, which, results in part from the lack of sampling and screening systems that can help identify the presence of contaminants in the CDW waste stream. This is partially due to OPEs not being considered controlled compounds under current regulations, thus screening or separation for handling of OPEs at construction and demolition work sites is rare to non-existent. The data generated in this study reveals the need for improving CDW management to minimize, if not eliminate, environmental contamination by OPEs.

Site suitability analysis for locating construction and demolition waste transfer station: an Indian case study.

Construction and Demolition Waste Management (CDWM) includes collecting, transporting, processing, and disposing construction and demolition (C&D) waste, where collection and transportation of bulky and voluminous C&D waste contribute significantly to economic and environmental impacts. Transfer station (TS) being a link between various waste management (WM) facilities plays a significant role in collection and transportation of waste. Thus, locating TS at suitable site can help in reducing the overall impacts. Employment of Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis tools in CDWM is a powerful strategy for site suitability study. A case study in Coimbatore, India, is presented in this study using GIS-based multi-criteria analysis for locating C&D waste TS. The criteria for site suitability analysis are chosen based on literature review, regulations, and experts' opinions. Weights of the chosen criteria are estimated using analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the final suitability map is created by weighted overlay analysis (WOA) in GIS environment. Results provide first-hand information for local decision makers to locate C&D waste transfer station in the chosen study region and report that 12% of the entire area is "highly suitable" for transfer station location.

Exploring UAE's transition towards circular economy through construction and demolition waste management in the pre-construction stage–A case study approach

PurposeThis paper aims to explore UAE's transition towards circular economy (CE) through construction and demolition waste (CDW) management in the pre-construction stage. The extent of circularity is assessed by five key aspects of CE, such as policies and strategic frameworks, design for waste prevention, design for disassembly or deconstruction, use of prefabricated elements and CDW management plans.Design/methodology/approachMultiple case studies were conducted in the context of the Dubai construction industry (UAE). Three significant and unique construction projects were selected as the cases. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to collect data, and the thematic analysis technique and NVIVO 12 software were used for data analysis.FindingsFindings reveal several positive initiatives towards CE in the UAE context; yet it is identified that the transition is still at the initial stage. Selected case studies, the best-case scenarios of UAE (i.e. influential cases), demonstrated adequate measures in relation to four key CE aspects out of five. For instance, (a) policies and strategic frameworks such as lean standards, green building standards and standards developed by the local authorities, (b) design for waste prevention (e.g. adherence to the 3R principle, and construction planning with BIM), (c) use of prefabricated elements and application of innovative construction technologies (e.g. 3DPC, DfMA) and (d) CDW management planning such as 3R principle were evident. However, the selected cases hardly showcase designing for disassembly or deconstruction.Research limitations/implicationsThe existing CDW practices are mostly conventional, as most constructions in UAE are procured through conventional building materials and methods. Therefore, there is a necessity of encouraging CE principles in CDW management. Even though the transition towards CE was evident in four key CE aspects out of five, the UAE construction industry has yet to adopt more effective CE-based CDW management practices to accelerate the circularity. Hence, it is necessary to enforce standard waste management guidelines, including the 3R principle, to standardise CDW management in UAE and encourage construction practitioners to adhere to CE principles.Originality/valueThe findings of this study provide valuable insights for decision-making processes around CDW management towards a CE. This paper contributes to the literature by bridging the CE concept with CDW management in the pre-construction stage. The study provides insights for industry practitioners for planning CE in terms of policies and strategic frameworks, CDW management planning, construction planning and application of innovative construction technologies.

Construction and Demolition Waste Management in a Developing Country: A Nigerian Scenario

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is an important waste composition receiving attention from policymakers and researchers globally due to the negative impacts associated with its management. This paper explores construction and demolition waste management (CDWM) in Nigeria with a view to understanding CDWM’s practices as perceived by the policymakers, waste managers and other stakeholders in the construction industry. A descriptive qualitative research design was adopted with data obtained from secondary sources. Findings revealed that CDWM is not a recent phenomenon in Nigeria but there is a renewed interest in it in the last decade. Findings also revealed that CDW does not receive the deserved attention from the constituted authority and stakeholders in the construction industry. While there is a low level of awareness regarding the negative impacts of CDW on public health and the environment, most construction firms and contractors have resorted to unsustainable disposal methods of open dumping, burning, and landfilling. Further findings revealed the potential for sustainable CDWM of reusing, recycling, and composting. Finally, the paper put forward recommendations that would chart a course for sustainable CDWM in Nigeria if implemented.

Design and Validation of a Mobile Application for Construction and Demolition Waste Traceability

Many studies have developed technologies intended to automate the process toward improving sustainability and achieving a circular economy in the construction industry. Despite some research works that have been recently conducted to help construction agents in the management of construction and demolition waste (CDW), developing new CDW monitoring and traceability tools—through a collaborative and integrative approach—is still an urgent challenge. This paper developed a hybrid mobile app for the real-time traceability of construction waste generation and management, where agents involved in CDW management can work together and trace the generation and management of waste. For this, a research method was developed following three stages: (1) planning and design, including identification of the information to be incorporated in the app and the output data; (2) development of the app; and (3) app testing by several construction agents, stressing the benefits and limitations. The developed app allows not only estimating but also tracing the amount of CDW generated in a construction project, ensuring the correct management and control of the waste. In addition, it promotes collaborative work, as the agents involved in CDW management, i.e., construction companies, site managers, truck drivers, waste managers, and management plants, can work together and see in real-time the management of the waste.

A comprehensive model for quantifying construction waste in high-rise buildings in India.

The construction industry plays a vital role in the economic development of any country. Concurrently, the sector also generates enormous quantities of construction and demolition waste (CDW) that damages the ecology causing environmental pollution and deteriorating human health. Recently, various governments and other organizations realized the importance of implementing construction waste management (CWM) practices to attain sustainability in construction. The current decade can be called a pathway for achieving the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals in which CWM plays an inevitable role. However, accurately quantifying construction waste is necessary to successfully implement any CDW management plan. A detailed literature review for the current research revealed that limited information on the magnitude of construction waste is available in India. Therefore, the current paper proposes a practically viable model to estimate the waste generation index (construction waste generated per total floor area) of high-rise residential buildings in India. The waste quantification is being done based on the project documents and expert interviews. The methodology is later validated through a high-rise building with G + 18 stories located in Kerala, India. The study indicated that a high-rise concrete framed structure generates 122.3 kg m-2 of waste during construction. It was also noted that, concrete, aggregates and blocks constitute 92% of the total waste generated in the project. The developed model can also be used as a cornerstone for establishing a construction waste database at the regional level.

From rubbles to digital material bank. A digital methodology for construction and demolition waste management in post-disaster areas

In 2020, European countries generated 807 mln tons of construction and demolition waste (CDW), accounting for 37.5% of total waste production. The UE Waste Framework Directive of 2008 established as a priority goal to increase the percentage of reuse, recycling and recovery of nonhazardous construction waste to a minimum of 70% by 2020. Pending the report that will define compliance with this goal, the average percentage currently stands at around 50%, of which only 3% involves upcycling operations. This doctoral research defines an operational methodology aimed at implementing digital processes for circularity in the AEC sector, with a focus on post-earthquake emergency Italian contexts. The treatment of CDW in earthquake-affected areas for the purpose of recovery/reuse, in a perspective of circularity, represents an underexplored field and limited, as in the rest of UE, to downcycling operations. By defining planning strategies and digital tools and procedures, the research aims to facilitate the reuse of building elements from post-earthquake demolition and reconstruction operations. The final output of the research consists of a cloud database, a Digital Material Bank (DMB), of informed building elements from post-earthquake selective demolition operations that can be reused in the construction market as a secondary raw material. The CDW management of the 2016 Central Italy earthquake is identified as the scope of application, with a focus on the situation in the Marche region. Finally, the main limitations and possible future scenarios of the research are reported.
