Evaluating SWOT's interferometric capabilities for mapping intertidal topography

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, originally designed for observing ocean and inland water bodies, can be a valuable tool for mapping the topography of intertidal flats. This study provides the first demonstration of SWOT's ability to measure intertidal topography using simultaneous interferometric acquisitions. Observations acquired between April and July 2023, during the calibration/validation (CALVAL) phase of the mission, were used. SWOT-derived intertidal Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were generated from level-2 High-Rate Pixel Cloud (L2_HR_PIXC) products and compared to airborne and UAV LiDAR-derived DEMs. Our results indicate a high reliability of the SWOT observations with a mean absolute error lower than 0.49 m, reaching 0.13 m in specific areas. This validation confirms SWOT's contribution for coastal studies beyond water level mapping, showcasing its broader applicability in the monitoring and management of coastal and estuarine environments.

Application of gradient boosting machine in satellite-derived bathymetry using Sentinel-2 data for accurate water depth estimation in coastal environments

Accurate water depth estimation is crucial in coastal environmental management, resource exploration, and ecological protection. Traditional water depth measurement methods are often time-consuming and costly, especially in vast sea areas where their application is limited. However, with the rapid development of remote sensing technology, particularly the widespread use of high-resolution satellite imagery, water depth remote sensing has emerged as a more efficient, economical, and widely applicable solution. In this study, we utilized Sentinel-2 satellite data and applied various algorithms to accurately estimate water depth in the Nanshan Port area. The results showed that the Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM) model excelled in monitoring shallow water and coastal environments, effectively addressing challenges such as light attenuation and water scattering in turbid waters. Compared to traditional methods, GBM-generated predictions were smoother and more detailed. This study not only demonstrates the significant potential of satellite remote sensing for water depth measurement but also points to future directions for algorithm optimization and the integration of remote sensing technologies. It is expected to bring revolutionary progress to oceanic scientific research and coastal management.

Reinvigorating radioactive wastewater to the ocean: Investigate the effect of board diversity on environmental corporate social responsibility in the context of Japan

The discharge of radioactive wastewater into the eastern ocean from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, a decision that comes from the Japanese government and TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company), has subjected Japanese firms to reputational damage risks and increasing environmental legitimacy pressure from multiple stakeholders in environmental corporate social performance (ECSR) than ever. In the present research endeavor, we draw upon the existing body of scholarly literature pertaining to gender-diverse board and business ethics as a critical element of steering ocean and coastal environmental management. This undertaking aims to provide original insights into the factors influencing board gender diversity (BGD) and its subsequent impact on ECSR within the specific context of Japan. Grounded in the theoretical framework of legitimacy theory, we put forth a conceptual model designed to elucidate the relationship between BGD and ECSR. Additionally, this study delves into the moderating influence of financial constraints between BGD and ECSR. To empirically examine our conceptual framework, we collected data from two primary sources: Toyo Keizai Inc. and Nikkei Inc. The findings of our investigation reveal a statistically significant positive relationship between BGD and ECSR performance. Furthermore, our results indicate that financial constraints serve to intensify the association between BGD and engagement in ECSR initiatives. Finally, we corroborate the robustness of our findings through various extensions of our analytical models.

Utilization of metal and radionuclide concentrations to assess the influence of shrimp farming on the geochemical characteristics of sediments.

This article assesses the environmental impacts of aquatic biota cultivation, focusing on shrimp farming in Brazil's Northeast, as this practice has proven to be one of the main sources of economic growth in the region. For this purpose, sediment samples were collected from areas impacted and not directly impacted by shrimp farming, and concentrations of key geochemical parameters such as salinity, various elements (K, P, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn, Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Na), and natural radionuclides (K-40, Ra-226 and Ra-228) were compared using statistical tools. Element concentrations were determined using ICP-OES, and naturally occurring radionuclide concentrations were obtained through gamma spectrometry. Statistical tests, such as ANOVA and/or Mann-Whitney, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis, were applied to the results. Additionally, the ERICA Tool software was employed to estimate deleterious effects on both human and non-human biota. Descriptive statistics reveal variability in sediment parameters around shrimp farming. ANOVA and Mann-Whitney tests compare concentrations of shrimp farm sediment and not directly impacted sediment, showing non-significant differences for most elements. pH and salinity, crucial for shrimp health, exhibit higher values in shrimp farm sediment. Alkali and alkaline earth metals, including K and Na, show no significant differences. Factor and cluster analyses suggest that certain elements, mainly radionuclides, are influenced by sediment variability. Hazard indices for naturally occurring radionuclides indicate negligible risk to both human and non-human biota, reinforcing the absence of adverse effects from shrimp farming activities. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impacts of shrimp farming, emphasizing the importance of monitoring geochemical parameters for coastal environmental management.

Investigating artisanal fishers’ support for MPAs: Evidence from the Tuscan Archipelago (Mediterranean Sea)

In order to meet the “30 by 30” target of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, efforts for establishing new marine protected areas (MPAs) in European seas will increase in the upcoming years, thus affecting an increasing number of stakeholders. However, despite widely distributed across the globe, many MPAs fail to achieve their goals due to the little weight attributed to fishers’ perception as well as their scarce involvement in the different stages of MPA, from planning to management. Using the Tuscan Archipelago as a model system, we gathered artisanal fishers perceptions of MPAs and investigated potential drivers for MPA support. Information was also collected on the level of satisfaction on and involvement into current management of coastal environments, as well as fishers management proposals. Data was gathered from a sample of 27 artisanal fishers (representing 30 % of total fishers) through semi-structured interviews based on an opportunistic+snowball sampling strategy. Several fishers express positive perceptions towards the MPA concept, as long as fishers involvement is granted. Fishers open to the MPA concept are also available to change fishing gear and areas if an MPA includes their usual fishing grounds. Our results suggest that the effectiveness of MPAs in sustaining coastal biodiversity and associated harvestable stocks could be enhanced by the involvement of artisanal fishers in MPA establishment and management.

Community stewardship to protect coastal and freshwater ecosystems–pathways between recreation and stewardship intentions

Abstract Strengthening community engagement in stewardship can help to improve management of coastal and freshwater environments (blue spaces). Research suggests that recreational users of natural areas may be more willing to engage in stewardship. However, little research at a population scale has examine how recreation experiences shape psychological ingredients for stewardship. We surveyed 3271 residents of South East Queensland, Australia and quantified willingness to engage in blue space stewardship. We then quantified frequency of different types of blue space recreation, perceptions about threats to blue spaces (threat appraisal) and protective actions (coping appraisal), and satisfaction with blue spaces. We then examined pathways from recreation to stewardship intentions using mediation analysis. Results show that many types of recreation were associated with stewardship intentions. Specifically, higher frequency of social activities and nature‐appreciation activities were associated with greater intentions for individual stewardship (e.g. picking up litter, reducing use of household chemicals). Higher frequency of social activities, nature appreciation, exercise and fishing/boating was associated with stronger intentions for collective stewardship (e.g. attending a public meeting or riparian management event) Mediation analysis showed that most forms of recreation did not influence perceptions about severity of threats to blue spaces. Rather, the relationships between recreation and stewardship were mediated by greater place satisfaction, perceived vulnerability to blue space degradation, and feeling more able to contribute to waterway protection (efficacy). These findings indicate that many types of recreation (not just nature appreciation activities) can be a foundation for engaging in nature stewardship, and reinforce the importance of building efficacy when promoting stewardship. The finding that both place satisfaction and perceived vulnerability to environmental degradation suggests that there may be an optimal motivational window for stewardship: people need to connect a place with positive experiences, and have some recognition of a potential threat, but where the potential threat has not yet eroded the natural values of a place. Study on the Influence of Salinity, TDS, GWL and Land Use in the Coastal Region of Kebumen Regency with a Statistical Approach

This study investigates the impact of salinity levels, total dissolved solids (TDS), groundwater levels (GWL), and land use patterns in the coastal region of Kebumen Regency, employing a statistical approach. Coastal areas are often vulnerable to salinity variations, which can significantly affect the surrounding ecosystems and land utilization. The research aims to discern the correlation between TDS, salinity levels, GWL and land use practices in this specific region, employing statistical analysis as a means of quantifying and understanding these relationships. Total dissolved solids (TDS) represent the concentration of inorganic salts, minerals, and ions in water bodies and play a crucial role in the overall water quality of coastal areas. Salinity levels, on the other hand, directly affect TDS and are influenced by factors such as tidal patterns and freshwater input. Groundwater levels affect salinity and TDS. Land use practices, including agricultural, residential, and industrial activities, profoundly impact coastal ecosystems and are often influenced by salinity levels. This study utilizes statistical methods to analyze the complex interplay between TDS, salinity, GWL, and land use in the Kebumen Regency coastal region. By examining data related to TDS, salinity, GWL, and land utilization, this research seeks to contribute valuable insights into the sustainable management of coastal environments. The findings of this study are expected to inform decision-making processes for the benefit of local communities and ecosystems, guiding future policies and practices for the preservation and balanced development of coastal areas in Kebumen Regency

Layer-specific mechanisms of perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) transport and partition in estuarine environments: Unveiling the depth-dependent differences

Understanding of characteristics and transport of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in heterogeneous estuarine environments is limited. Furthermore, the role of suspended particles (SPS) in different layers remains unclear. This study explores the multiphase distribution process and mechanism of PFAAs controlled by SPS across surface and bottom layers in five small estuaries. Peaks in PFAA concentrations are consistently observed at strongly stratified sites. Concentrations of the PFAAs in both surface and bottom SPS decreased as the degree of mixing increased from strongly stratified levels to well-mixed levels. The water-SPS partitioning of some short-chain PFAAs (PFBS, PFHxA, and PFHpA) is influenced by environmental factors (pH, depth, temperature, and salinity) due to electrostatic interactions, while the sorption of some long-chain PFAAs (PFOA, PFOS, and PFNA) is controlled by SPS and dissolved organic carbon (OC), driven by hydrophobic interactions. Additionally, SPS dominates OC transport in estuarine systems, except in sandy sediment environments. SPS plays a dominant role in PFAA partitioning in both surface and bottom water-SPS systems (p < 0.05), and salinity only significantly affects PFBS in bottom layer (p < 0.01). These findings are critical for understanding the drivers of PFAA partitioning and the roles of SPS in different layers, underscoring the necessity of considering particle-associated PFAA fractions in future coastal environmental management.

Changes of Yancheng coastline near 20 years based on remote sensing technology

The study of coastline changes is crucial for the monitoring, development, and management of coastal environments. This article specifically focuses on the coastline of Yancheng. To analyze the changes of coastline, latest remote sensing images of Landsat series from 2002 to 2021 were selected. Threshold segmentation was employed to extract the coastline from these images. Subsequently, tidal level correction was applied to rectify the instantaneous water edge in the binary image of the target coastal area based on tidal channels, resulting in the acquisition of the target coastline. Finally, the obtained target coastline from different time periods were inputted into the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). DSAS can be used to assess coastline changes using the end point change rate (EPR) and linear regression change rate (LRR). The research findings reveal that the average siltation rate of various sections along the Yancheng coastline is 105.62 m/y, with the maximum siltation length measuring 12,048 m, located in the Tiaozini reclamation area. Conversely, the maximum erosion length is 1820 m, situated near the mouth of the Shuangyang River. Taking the Sheyang River mouth as the boundary, the northern coastline of the river mouth experiences predominantly erosion, while the southern coastline is primarily affected by sedimentation. Moreover, the rate of coastline change gradually increases from north to south. The transformation of artificial coastline is the outcome of a combination of natural and human factors. Agricultural reclamation, port construction, and coastal protection engineering are identified as the main reasons for the artificial and seaward advancement of coastline. This study provides a foundation for the construction and protection of Yancheng’s coastal zone and offshore engineering. It holds significant practical implications for urban planning and development.

Feet on the ground: Marine archaeomalacology resources during the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the Iberian Peninsula

The Iberian Peninsula is the ideal setting for the study of the use of marine resources in the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. Previous studies have focused on specific geographical areas and on a single chronological period. Instead, we offer here a synthesis of the peninsula covering a broad period of time, thus allowing a study of the role of marine resources in the Neolithisation process. Published data on the exploitation of marine molluscs from 59 archaeological levels, close to the coast and dated between 10,400 and 4650 cal BP, in the Iberian Peninsula are reviewed in order to examine the change that occurred in the consumption of marine resources following the introduction of domestic plants and animals. The analysis of the composition and diversity of assemblages collected at each site has allowed us to identify specialisation in the management strategy of marine molluscs during the Neolithic. Regional variability in the diversity of species collected, particularly in the Cantabrian region, where there is continuity in the management of molluscs between the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, could be linked to the pace at which agriculture and animal husbandry were adopted. In short, together with environmental factors, the establishment of farming practices may have had a slight impact on the specialisation in the management of coastal environments.

Residual Analysis and Tidal Harmonic Components in Bangkalan Regency, East Java

Bangkalan Regency is one of Madura, East Java, where some of its areas are located in a coastal environment. The coastal environment can experience economic development due to the transportation aspect so that many industries have been established in that environment. Studies on oceanographic parameters are essential because management of coastal environments can not be separated from oceanographic information: The tides information about the tidal characteristics can be obtained after performing a harmonic analysis, which produces the value of harmonic components. This study analyses the residue and tidal harmonic components using the LP-Tides Matlab software in the Sepulu district, Bangkalan Regency, East Java. The data used are January 2021 data from the Geospatial Information Agency. This research shows that the main harmonic components generated include K2, M4, MS4, M2, S2, N2, K1, O1, and P1. The tidal type shows that the Sepulu district is a semi-diurnal type with a Formzahl number = 0.08566. The maximum observation and prediction data values for January 2021 in the Sepulu district are 978 and 1273.64 mm. The MSL value is 434 mm, with an average tidal residue value between the observation and predictive data = 166.01 mm. Then the calculation of the RMSE value and standard deviations are 12.88 and 125.90 mm

Bacterial community driven nitrogen cycling in coastal sediments of intertidal transition zone

Microorganisms inhabiting in coastal sediments significantly affect the nitrogen cycling in coastal waters and ecosystems. However, the bacterial community that related to the key active nitrogen transformation processes in intertidal transition zone are still not understood. Across a long flat intertidal zone at depths from 0 to 3 m in Daya Bay, China, the bacterial communities in sediments and their driven nitrogen cycling potential were evaluated with environmental factors and 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that the intertidal zone is a divide for environmental factors as pH, salinity and C/N ratio, instead of an average shift from freshwater to salt water. At the same time, the environmental factors influenced the abundance of bacterial community related to nitrogen cycling. Across the intertidal zone, the dominant nitrogen transformation processes were different. At the high tide and middle tide sites, the primary nitrogen cycling process was nitrification that worked with Nitrosomonadaceae, Nitrospiraceae, 0319-6A21, and wb1-A12. At the low tide sites, nitrogen fixation was the dominant function conducted by Bradyrhizobiaceae. The reduction of nitrate was carried out with the help of Xanthomonadales but relatively weak in all sampling sites especially for low tide sites. This was mostly because the richness and evenness of bacterial community were the lowest at the low tide sites. Meanwhile, the pH, Cl−, salinity, NH4+, NO3− and C/N ratio were the important factors that shaped the composition of local bacterial community. Further, the nonmetric multidimensional scaling results indicated that there were significant statistical differences in the composition of bacterial community among samples at different layers. The dominant nitrogen cycling processes in coastal sediments at different tide levels were revealed in this study, which offered an extended concept of nitrogen transformation along the groundwater discharge path in the intertidal transition zone. The distributions and compositions of bacterial communities and predicted functions provided a new insight for coastal environment and ecosystem management.

Functional redundancy in response to runoff input upholds microbial community in hydrocarbon-contaminated land-sea continuum

An experimental approach mimicking the land-sea continuum in microcosms was developed in order to determine the effect of the terrigenous inputs by soil runoff on the microbial functional potential in hydrocarbon (HC) contaminated marine coastal sediment. We hypothesized that the coalescent event increases the functional potential of microbial communities in marine coastal sediments, influencing the fate of HC in marine coastal ecosystems.The microbial functional potential including the HC degradation ability was assessed by DNA-array to compare the sediment receiving or not terrigenous inputs. The removal of HC and the functional gene richness in sediment was unchanged with the terrigenous inputs. However, the gene variants (GVs) composition was modified indicating functional redundancy. In addition, functional indicators including GVs related to sulfite reduction, denitrification and polyaromatic degradation were identified in higher proportion in sediment receiving terrigenous inputs. The terrigenous inputs modified the functional co-occurrence networks, showing a reorganization of the GVs associations with an increase of the network complexity. Different keystone GVs ensuring similar functions were identified in networks with or without terrigenous inputs, further confirming functional redundancy.We argue that functional redundancy maintains the structure of microbial community in hydrocarbon-contaminated land-sea continuum mixing zone. Our results provide helpful functional information for the monitoring and management of coastal environment affected by human land-based activities.

Effects of plastic contamination on carbon fluxes in a subtropical coastal wetland of East China

Coastal wetlands are recognized as carbon sinks that play an important role in mitigating global climate change because of the strong carbon uptake by vegetation and high carbon sequestration in the soil. Over the last few decades, plastic waste pollution in coastal zones has become increasingly serious owing to high-intensity anthropogenic activities. However, the influence of plastic waste (including foam waste) accumulation in coastal wetlands on carbon flux remains unclear. In the Yangtze Estuary, we investigated the variabilities of vegetation growth, carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes, and soil properties in a clean Phragmites australis marsh and mudflat and a plastic-polluted marsh during summer and autumn. The clean marsh showed a strong CO2 uptake capacity (a carbon sink), and the clean mudflat showed a weak CO2 sink during the measurement period. However, polluted marshes are a significant source of CO2 emissions. Regardless of the season, the gross primary production and vegetation biomass of the polluted marshes were on average 9.5 and 1.1 times lower than those in the clean marshes, respectively. Ecosystem respiration and CH4 emissions in polluted marshes were significantly higher than those in clean marshes and mudflats. Generally, the soil bulk density and salinity in polluted marshes were lower, whereas the median particle size was higher at the polluted sites than at the clean sites. Increased soil porosity and decreased salinity may favor CO2 and CH4 emissions through gas diffusion pathways and microbiological behavior. Moreover, the concentrations of heavy metals in the soil of plastic-polluted marshes were 1.24–1.49 times higher than those in the clean marshes, which probably limited vegetation growth and CO2 uptake. Our study highlights the adverse effects of plastic pollution on the carbon sink functions of coastal ecosystems, which should receive global attention in coastal environmental management.

Seasonal dynamics of coastal pollution migration in open waters with intensive marine ranching

Mariculture activities have been recognized as one of the major sources of contamination for marine pollutants, such as the excessive discharging of nitrogen and phosphate. The fully understanding of the pollutants emission and transportation is crucial for coastal environment management. However, the influence of such highly dynamic coastal process on the pollutant migration remain unclear, such as the effects of coastal seasonal hydrodynamics on the dissolved pollutant transportation, especially under intensive marine ranching activities in open waters. This study investigated the seasonal transport mechanisms of pollutants released from three typical mariculture methods (floating raft, cage and bottom pond) in the Wangjia Island (WJ), Yellow Sea, China. We have conducted three field surveys to monitor the coastal dynamics and measure the distribution of dissolved pollutants in the ranching area. Results from these field surveys show that the WJ and adjacent area experienced significant degradation in terms of water quality with the development of regional marine ranching. The average of calculated index for eutrophication Ei increases from 0.12 in the non-farming area to 0.78 in the farming area. In order to delineate the impacts area of pollutant transport associated with these highly dynamics of water exchange, a Eulerian passive tracer-tracking module is applied to simulate the pollutant transport processes based on a field scale three-dimensional Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM). Then after, the impacts of barotropic and baroclinic coastal dynamics on the migration of dissolved pollutants were evaluated. The transport of pollutants was greatly influenced by the different farming modes. The travel distance of pollutants released from the bottom pond farming mode was limited, whereas pollutants from the surface-farming methods were transported over a longer distance. In this study, there are three folders of finding: 1) The migration direction varies with seasons, with a landward direction in winter and an offshore direction in summer; 2) In winter, strong wind (wind speed over 10 m/s) is the dominant factor for water exchange, which is conducive to the dispersion of pollutants in the study area. However, in summer, the thermal stratification controls pollutant migration; 3) The results of breakthrough time illustrate that the pollutants travelled slower during summer, especially for pollutants discharged from the bottom pond farming method. In summary, this study demonstrates that even in open waters with stronger water exchange capacity, the pollutants from intensive marine ranching can still increase the risk of eutrophication. The finding of this study has important implications for the management and regulation of offshore aquaculture activities, particularly for mitigating pollutants from marine ranching.

Using google street view panoramas to investigate the influence of urban coastal street environment on visual walkability

Urban street walkability can effectively promote public health and the construction of livable cities. In addition, the coastal streets play a positive role in showing urban vitality and image. Due to the growing leisure needs of residents, measuring the visual walkability perception (VIWP) in urban streets and exploring the influence mechanisms of urban coastal street environments on VIWP have theoretical and practical significance. However, the methods of the previous walkability studies have limitations in terms of cost, time and measurement scale. Based on Google Street View Panoramic (GSVP) image data, this study used the semantic difference (SD) method with virtual reality (VR) technology to evaluate the VIWP of Fukuoka coastal streets. Meanwhile, the proportion of streetscape elements was extracted from GSVP images by semantic segmentation. The correlation and regression analyses were performed between the VIWP evaluation values and streetscape elements. Then, the regression model of the VIWP and the streetscape elements was established. The results showed that the natural features had a positive influence on VIWP in coastal streets. Correspondingly, trees were the strongest contribution rate for the VIWP, followed by shrubs, grasses and water, however, buildings and cars had a negative influence on VIWP. The method extends previous studies for measuring walkability, and optimization strategies were proposed to improve the visual quality of the coastal streets. It can be applied in the construction and management of walkable coastal street environments.

It is a great honor and pleasure to present the proceeding of the 10th International Seminar on Ocean and Coastal Engineering, Environmental and Natural Disaster Management (ISOCEEN). Our coastal, ocean, and offshore activities and products must adopt more innovative thoughts and efforts to ensure that we achieve sustainable development goals. Through this seminar, engineers and scientists whose activities are related to research and solving problems in the coastal, marine, maritime, hydrodynamics, oil, and gas are expected to develop science and technology in Coastal, Ocean, and Offshore Engineering in an integrated manner.Started by the third vice-chancellor of Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Dr.Eng. Ir. Ahmad Rusdiansyah, M.Eng. The event brings the theme Integrated Sustainable Innovative Approaches for Science and Technology on Coastal, Ocean, and Offshore Engineering. Evaluating the effectiveness of coastal environmental management policies in China: The case of Bohai Sea

With marine pollution issues becoming serious and widespread, a series of coastal environmental managemental policies are being carried out worldwide, the effectiveness of which requires comprehensive evaluation. Taking the Bohai Sea (BS) of China as an example, which has been plagued by serious ecological and environmental issues for decades due to terrestrial pollution discharge, this study explored and quantified, for the first time to our best knowledge, the variability of water quality after initiating a dedicated 3-year pollution control action (Uphill Battle for Integrated Bohai Sea Management, UBIBM, 2018–2020) implemented by China's central government, with two water quality indexes of water color (Forel-Ule index, FUI) and transparency (Secchi disk depth, ZSD, m) from satellite observations. During the UBIBM, a significant improvement in water quality was detected, characterized by a clearer and bluer BS, with ZSD and FUI improved by 14.1% and 3.2%, respectively, compared with the baseline period (2011–2017). In addition, an abrupt drop in the long-term record (2011–2022) of the coverage area of highly turbid waters (ZSD≤2 m or FUI≥8) was found in 2018, which coincided with the start of the UBIBM, indicating that the water quality improvement may be attributed to the pollution alleviation of the UBIBM. Independent data of land-based pollution statistics also supported this deduction. (3) Compared with the previous two pollution control actions in the first decade of 21st century, UBIBM was proved to be the most successful one in terms of the achieved highest transparency and lowest FUI during the past two decades. Reasons for the achievement and implications to future pollution control are discussed for a more sustainable and balanced improvement in the coastal environment. This research provides a valuable example that satellite remote sensing can play a vital role in the management of coastal ecosystems by providing effective evaluation of pollution control actions.

An integrated conceptual model to characterize the effects of offshore wind farms on ecosystem services

Offshore wind farm development has become a key measure of energy transition in recent years. Coastal territories are particularly favorable to the development of offshore wind farms due to their high energy potential. However, these areas are also hotspots of biodiversity, provide attractive landscapes and are under strong anthropogenic pressures. Preserving and sharing the natural and cultural resources of coastal territories while intensifying renewable marine energies, represents one of the most important challenges for future management of coastal environments. Consequently, systemic models that consider all the effects of offshore wind farms on ecosystems and society are essential. Here, we propose a conceptual model for studying these effects, by mobilizing the concept of ecosystem service in a systemic and integrated assessment approach. To that aim, we reviewed the literature and compiled experts’ knowledge in order to characterize the effects of offshore wind farms on food webs during the construction and operation phases. Then, we analyzed the contribution of trophic compartments on ecosystem functions, ecosystem services and beneficiaries, and how offshore wind farms modify the relationships between these compartments of the marine coastal social-ecological systems. Our approach helps identify the causal chains that generate the most important modifications in this system. This information could then be used to predict impacts of offshore wind farms on ecosystem services, and to suggest management trade-offs. This study reveals the need for further studies relating marine biodiversity to ecosystem services, and developing systemic approaches at different scales. The analysis of the effects of offshore wind farms on ecosystem services is crucial since it is linked to strong ecological, socio-economic and political issues.
