Does eLearning Require Self-regulated Discipline? Measuring and Validating a Scale for Online Self-regulated Learning Quotient

Self-regulation has gained much prominence due to its necessity and significance in eLearning environment. The nature of eLearning mandates higher self-regulation to attain efficacy. In this article, we study the Online Self-regulated Learning Quotient (OSLQ) scale as it is a pioneering scale that has been verified for studying self-regulation in eLearning environment. The literature delineates the need to empirically examine the reliability and validity of the OSLQ in various contexts. This study was conducted in two phases on business school students from tier one management institutes in India. In phase 1, we performed qualitative analysis through focus group discussions on a sample of 24 respondents to check the content validity of the scale. In phase 2, we performed quantitative analysis on a sample of 528 respondents. Exploratory factor analysis in phase 2 of the study confirmed six factors. Confirmatory factor analysis in phase 2 of the study confirmed scale validity. Based on the findings, we conclude that OSLQ is a valid and reliable scale to assess self-regulation among Indian students in eLearning context. These findings have added to the theoretical legitimacy of the scale. In terms of practical implication, our findings suggest that OSLQ may be employed in an Indian context. This has significant implications for future research in self-regulation studies in India, especially in the context of eLearning.

SWOC Analysis: Impact of Methodological Changes in Top 20 NIRF-ranked Management Institutions on Branding Strategy

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the impact of methodological changes in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on the branding strategies of the top 20 management institutions in India for the year 2023. Researcher seeks to identify how alterations in ranking parameters affect these institutions' competitive positioning and branding approaches. Design/Methodology: The study employs SWOC (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Challenges) analysis to examine the internal strengths and weaknesses of management institutions, as well as the external opportunities and challenges arising from shifts in NIRF ranking parameters. Data collection involves a comprehensive review of ranking methodologies, institutional profiles available from the secondary source only. Results/Discussion/Analysis: Findings reveal the nuanced impact of methodological changes on branding strategy development. Internal strengths such as academic reputation and faculty expertise can be leveraged to capitalize on new ranking criteria, while weaknesses such as infrastructure limitations may require strategic investments. External opportunities such as emerging industry trends offer avenues for differentiation, while challenges such as increased competition necessitate proactive adaptation. Outcome: The analysis provides actionable insights for management institutions to refine their branding strategies in response to evolving ranking methodologies. By aligning internal capabilities with external opportunities and effectively addressing challenges, institutions can maintain or enhance their competitive advantage in the marketplace. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by offering a systematic analysis of the interplay between ranking methodology changes and branding strategy development in the context of management education. An assessment of professional competencies and skills required for library professionals of management institutions in Kerala (India)

PurposeThis study aims to explore various skills of library professionals working in management institutions of Kerala State, India.Design/methodology/approachA survey method was used by distributing online questionnaire as a data collection tool. The questionnaires were distributed to the library professionals working in management institutions in Kerala State, India.FindingsThe study’s results revealed that the library professionals were competent with managerial, communication and interpersonal skills. Conversely, they were lacking skills in statements such as institutional repository, web 2.0 and social networks. Their familiarity level with reference management tools, research and academic ethics, electronic publishing and management of open-access resources, were also not satisfactory. They need knowledge of other ICT skills such as designing and maintaining in-house databases, video conferencing tools, advanced troubleshooting creating and managing metadata, handling RFID technology and knowledge in solving issues while organizing webinars. Based on the findings, the study has suggested some recommendations which will enable the government/institutions to take appropriate measures to improve their skills.Practical implicationsThis study will enable the policymakers to identify in which area the library professionals are weak and develop a strategy and framework for increasing the level of their skills.Originality/valueThis study provides the views of the library professionals working in management institutions in India and warrants the library professionals to enhance their skills, especially on research ethics and publications and ICT skills.

Management education in technology-mediated ODL platform – implications for educators in context of shifting learning path and digital divide

PurposeIn the last few decades, the growth in management institutions in India has become significant. The Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institutions also have started offering management programmes at various levels. In the ODL scenario, the learning path has been shifting from the traditional Self-Learning Material (SLM) -based model to technology-mediated platform. The digital divide in India is also a widely discussed area. In this context, a need has been felt to understand the implications for educators, more specifically, for the programmes offered through technology-enabled ODL mode.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses triangulation method covering literature review, personal interview and survey. Primary data have been collected through structured questionnaire in the Google Form administered on the learners of UG and PG progammes of management in Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU), India. The sample size is 101, and the sampling frame is within Assam, a province of India. Select interviews (15 nos.) were also conducted with a cross section of learners to capture the emerging shift in the learning path and the limiting factors of digital divide.FindingsLearners possess multiple digital devices for e-learning (41.8% uses laptop and 88.8% uses android phone). Interaction in WhatsApp and Telegram groups are mostly related with evaluation and course administration, rather than content and academic discussion. eSLMs are widely used. Though promoted, video lectures are not widely used. Some of the problems faced by the learners are low bandwidth, high cost of data subscription etc. Learners are not constrained by digital device, and they are engaged in positive communication with stake holders in digital platform.Originality/valueThis study will help in understanding the technology-enabled learning for management education in ODL mode in India. As a wide majority of the learners (88%) are dependent on small screen; print SLM and eSLM on a larger screen can provide augmented learning in case of complex topics like analysis of financial statements, project scheduling etc. Though the COVID-19 pandemic forced a shift in learning path, the transition is not full. The digitally constrained learners still look for solutions to complex learning problems mainly through print SLM and counselling. The talent of the students cannot be facilitated in WhatsApp and Telegram e-mentoring groups, like the way it could be done in learning management system (LMS)-mediated platforms.

Gamification on OTT Platforms: A Behavioural Study for User Engagement

This study examines the consumer’s visual attention toward gamification options while watching the OTT (Over-the-top) online content. Also, the impact of gamification on user engagement (UE) on the OTT platform was studied using data collected by conducting an eye-tracking experiment and subsequently using a user engagement scale (UES). The study was carried out at the marketing and behavioural lab of a management institute in India using the OTT platform website and Tobii eye-tracker. Empirical data was collected from 52 respondents within the age group between 23 to 35 years. The relation between Attention to Gamification (AG), Reward Satisfaction (RS), and User Engagement (UE) were studied by running a mediating linear regression analysis. From the results, it was found that respondents were equally interested in watching the online content as well as ready to explore the gamification options. The research findings demonstrate that Reward Satisfaction (RS) acted as a mediating factor in the relation between Attention to Gamification (AG) and User Engagement (UE). This study adds to the literature on consumer engagement towards gamification on the OTT platform, where the literature is still limited. Future research could consider mobile apps as a platform to undertake the study. This study aimed to empirically test the effect of AG on UE with the involvement of RS as a mediator. The study is the first of its type to use eye-tracking data to understand the impact of gamification on the OTT platform.

Engine of entrepreneurial intentions: revisiting personality traits with entrepreneurial education

PurposeThe intent to start an entrepreneurial venture is predisposed by certain personality traits. The study aims to analyze the impact of various identified personality traits and entrepreneurial education on entrepreneurial intentions of management students.Design/methodology/approachThe data for the study were gathered from 440 students of top 5 management institutes in India. The study used a cross-sectional design and structured questionnaire based on seven-point Likert scale and was administered employing a purposive sampling method. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to validate posited hypotheses in the study.FindingsThe study discerns that apart from agreeableness dimension of personality traits, all remaining identified dimensions along with entrepreneurial education had a significant influence on entrepreneurial intentions of management students with need for achievement emerging as the most important enabler. Conscientiousness was the major dimension among big five personality traits bearing a positive influence, while neuroticism registered a negative impact on entrepreneurial intentions. In addition, results bespeak that entrepreneurial education partially mediates the effect of need for achievement, locus of control and innovativeness on entrepreneurial intentions.Research limitations/implicationsThe compendious model proffered in the study might be helpful for students, educators, consultants, financial institutions and policymakers in appreciating the gravity of underlying personality traits.Originality/valueThere is a dearth of research on big five personality traits and entrepreneurial education as enablers of entrepreneurial intentions. The study attempts to integrate big five personality traits model with dimensions of need for achievement, locus of control, innovativeness and entrepreneurial education for management students in India.

The case of a management institute in India: recrafting the vision and mission

Theoretical basis The fundamental concepts in strategic management including vision, mission and setting objectives, external and internal environment analysis, SWOT, stakeholders in strategic management, deliberate and emergent strategy and strategic leaders have been addressed through the case. Research methodology The case was developed using primary data gathered from observations, interviews and the experiences of the authors at Chimanbhai Patel Institute of Management and Research (CPIMR) and published sources. Case overview/synopsis This case is about CPIMR, a management institute in Ahmedabad, India, which was required to recraft their vision and mission statements in light of the compliance requirements of the All India Council for Technical Education and the other challenges including new skills requirement especially because of Industry 4.0 changes and competition in the business education market. The case examines the external and internal environment challenges faced by the institute director and the emerging issues: how should CPIMR recraft the vision and mission? What could go wrong? How to make them actionable? How to disseminate them? The case would help the participants to understand the process of external and internal environment analysis, formulation of the vision and mission statements, their key purpose of informing stakeholders and setting objectives. The case also encourages the participants to put themselves in the position of the director for undertaking the process of recrafting the vision and mission statements of the management institute in the event of a strategic change. While the case setting is that of a management institute, it might also be useful for discussion in other organization settings. Management Research in Private Institutions of India: Opportunities and Challenges

Despite, continuously emphasizing on research in management institutions and other academic institutions of higher education in India, management institution have not yet met world standards in research. There is a paradoxical situation, among all the researches in management field from India are contributed majorly by premier government institutions which are less in number, though the number of private management institutions in India is more than sufficient in numbers. In this paper an effort is made to understand the present situation of management researches in India, opportunities and challenges in private management institutions. For understanding the present status of management researches, reports of reputed agencies are studied, for assessing the opportunities in private institutions data from AICTE is taken to be analyzed, whereas for figuring out the challenges, a sample of 50 faculty members from private institutions is taken, then their views on an open ended question is analyzed.

Building a yardstick–a benchmark framework for assessing higher education management institutions

PurposeHigher education management institutions play a vibrant role in imparting managerial skills to the students to face the corporate world. Performance evaluation of such institutions is mandate to ensure the outcome quality. To establish this, the present research explored the critical performance indicators of management institutions using the balanced scorecard (BSC) approach.Design/methodology/approachThis research explored the critical performance indicators of public, private and standalone management institutions in India. Data were collected from the representative sample of all the stakeholders in those management institutions. A specific vision was created and a systematic procedure was employed to arrive at the objectives, measures and metrics of the scorecard specific to the vision. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to perform analysis on the collected data. For the objectives and measures that evolved from confirmatory factor analysis, metrics were formulated based on the expert opinion.FindingsThe study resulted in 16 objectives, 46 measures and 54 metrics encompassing all the four perspectives of BSC. This paper has contributed a concrete, concise, comprehensive and context specific framework.Research limitations/implicationsThe nature of the BSC framework paves the way for continuous assessment and eventually helps the institutions to attain sustainable growth. This research contributes to the literature of balanced scorecard and also to the performance assessment of the management institutions.Originality/valueBSC-based benchmarking is a unique contribution to the academia of management education to precisely measure the performance of institutions. The model comprehensively includes the indicators from all the perspectives of stakeholders in terms of objectives, measures and metrics, thus proposing a holistic assessment.

Underpinning the relevancy of the NIRF rankings in higher education management institutions in India

We tried to explore the connection between National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings and students' enrolments using a sample of the top 75 NIRF ranked Management Institutions in India. For this purpose, we performed six different OLS multivariate regression analyses. However, the article did not provide any evidence of linkage of NIRF rankings with students' enrolments. Moreover, the multivariate regression results also revealed that there is no statistically significant relationship between individual NIRF factor scores and the students' enrolments as well. We argue the NIRF ranking does not help an educational institution to improve their students' enrolments. Besides, institutions' fee structure, the reputation of the institute, research output, infrastructural facility (including library and modern building), and location of the institute significantly improve students enrolment in a Post Graduate Program course. The finding of this study will provide students and other stakeholders such as parents and guardians' with important implications of NIRF ranking in the best interests of the students' prospect career.

Attitude towards Entrepreneurship among Management Students-A Comparative Study

For the economic development entrepreneurship plays an important role that contributes in the development process. Governments and business organizations across the world have hailed the importance of entrepreneurship and its contribution to socio-cultural and economic development. Entrepreneurship is quite a novel phenomenon in academics. There is general agreement that attitude towards the entrepreneur, entrepreneurial activity and its social function is determinant factors for university students to decide an entrepreneurial career. The objective of the present paper is to compare attitude towards entrepreneurship between male and female students of private and public management institutes in India. The study also attempts at narrowing the gap in literature by examining management student's attitude towards entrepreneurship. The study was based on primary data and respondents were selected from undergraduate students pursuing management education. The results show that there is significant difference in level of entrepreneurial attitude between male and female students. The findings of the present study can counter the findings of previous studies concerning attitude towards entrepreneurship.

Artificial intelligence divulges effective tactics of top management institutes of India

PurposeThe performance analysis of top 50 management institutions of India is conducted to understand their efficiency in utilizing available resources. The importance of different indicators is investigated to identify most preferred strategies of top management institutions in the country in order to meet the expectations of all stakeholders. Artificial neural networks models are applied for pattern recognition and classification purpose using self-organized map algorithms. A huge reservoir of young generation is being trained every year to meet the demand of business in different sectors of economies. It becomes a matter of concern to know the performance of the management institutes to ensure the overall national progress, which can be done by enabling organizations to improve their efficiency and effectiveness, provided the right information and skills are served. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) and self-organizing maps are utilized together to take advantages of optimization and prediction capabilities inherent in each method, and they may be beneficial to assess institution’s competitive position and design their own strategies in order to improve. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approachThe DEA is used to understand the utilization of resources by institutions on the bases of efficiency scores. Due to a greater flexibility and adaptability, neural technique, i.e. self-organized map, which is an artificial intelligence-based technique, a popular unsupervised learning model with a capability to capture patterns from data sets, is used. In this study, various parameters like qualification of faculty, research output of faculty members, expenditure made for functioning of the institution, etc., are considered. These academic and operational indicators are investigated in relation to the rank score and the efficiency score of top management institutions, and different strategies as a combination of input as well as output indicators are identified.FindingsIn the analysis, three types of strategies are identified. At present, the focus on salary packages of graduates seems the most utilized strategy. It is also observed that the strategy of having good performance, in terms of consultancy, peer and employer perception, has the highest success rate (in terms of score used for ranking). Results obtained using both techniques shows that due to high deviation and less explored research publications and sponsored research project is an opportunity that institutions can work upon to have maximum output. But to maintain consistency in terms of the high rank score and efficiency score, management institutions need to focus on consultancy, peer and employer perception.Practical implicationsThis research identifies the different parameters categorized into various inputs and outputs for the management institutions in India for the benchmarking. It studies the importance of identified parameters in terms of success (rank score and efficiency score). Further investigation of relationship between parameters and success is conducted. Different strategies as a combination of parameters are identified. The current choice of top management institutions is revealed in terms of their preference and effectiveness of strategy. This research also provides some insight about long-term and short-term strategies, which may be beneficial to education managers or decision makers.Originality/valueIt is one of the rare papers in terms of performance measurement through data envelopment method and identification of strategy using artificial intelligence. This paper utilized a hybrid methodology that integrates these two data analytic methods to capture an innovative performance and strategies prediction in education system.

Prospects and Challenges of Social Media Marketing: Study of Indian Management Institutes

Purpose - The research aimed to reveal real decisional behavioral of management institutes in India for social media marketing usage, and analyses of empirical elements of social media consumption pattern. Research design, data, and methodology - The investigation was based around a research methodology using quantitative analysis with appropriate statistical techniques on random surveys of consumers, detailed exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses are applied to assess the empirical validity of the model and multiple regression employed using R studio edition to validate the reliability of the developed models. Results - A new conceptual framework is proposed - the management institutions decision model, providing a tool for effective and more focused decision-making strategies for developing better utilization techniques for social media. Management institutions have different requirements based upon objectives and resources available. The evidence suggests that the administrators need to be more aware of consumer indicators when targeting and designing social media marketing strategy. Conclusions - The research was based on samples and not the entire population of target consumers, providing limitations. As an inferential statistical method was chosen, the results might be susceptible to inaccuracy. The model developed from different age users, thereby providing rich perspectives into social media usage pattern.

An Examination of the Quality of Catalogue Records of Management Institutes in India

The purpose of this study is to examine the quality of catalogue records in the top five management institutes in India. The present study attempts to investigate the error rate found in the catalogue records of five management institutes by comparing with bibliographic records of Library of Congress (LoC). The study analysed the accuracy of 293 catalogue records. The errors in the data were listed and categorised as major and minor errors. The finding shows that while LoC records are absolutely error free, the quality of catalogue records of management institutes, on the other hand, was far from acceptable level. 1093 errors from 251 records were found amounting to 4.35 errors per record. These results show that there is a need for libraries in India to take up the bibliographic data entry more seriously than ever before.

A New Algorithm for Student-Optimal Matching: A Framework for Management Institution's Admission in India

College admission problem is a matching problem with colleges offering seats (admission offer) to students. Each college has its own preference list of students and each student has also its list of preferred colleges. Many stable matching can be achieved. One of these matching is college-optimal, and one is student-optimal. Existing application of centralized matching offers static solution, since features of market places are static. In the context of proposed application for post graduate admission processes at management institutions in India, outside-market exit option by student is allowed till the start of the course, which in turn leads to further confirmation of wait-listed status. Possibility of outside-market exit option makes it difficult to apply deferred acceptance algorithm as one time application. This paper proposes a matching algorithm and a framework which allow outside-market exit option to have less impact on both parties. The matching obtained by existing process is not a stable matching, since it works as deferred acceptance procedure terminated in finite time, approximately 60 days with larger time-window for non-acceptance. The clearing house, of the proposed framework, can obtain stable matching on 8th day only, and remaining time period will be reserved for the settlement due to outside-market exit option.

Undergraduates and postgraduate’s students studying in one of the premier private hotel management institutes in India participated in </span><span>this study. The findings of the study suggest that library service providers need to understand the needs of students </span><span>and should have the inclination to help students in making the library a gateway for study, learning and research. The future research may include faculty members’ perception of importance and performance of library service quality. Do birds of a feather flock together? Language and its effect on friendship ties

Scholars have identified multiple antecedents of friendship ties like race, values, beliefs, and similarity of sex. In the present study, we have chosen a major but overlooked antecedent of friendship ties: language. As language has been found to be an important determinate of socio-cultural identity we argued that proximities in mother tongues would translate into proximities in friendship ties. We reason that while MBA classrooms are governed by transactional relationships, socio-cultural attributes would still dictate the formation of friendship ties. With unique measurement tools, we assessed the effect of linguistic proximity, language attitude, lingua franca, and language proficiency on friendship ties among 24272 unique dyadic pairs of MBA students inside a premier management institute in India. We found support for the argument that linguistic proximities translate into stronger friendship ties.

Rejuvenating management education

Management education in India is facing a lot of problems of relevance in the current scenario. Thousands of MBA institutes have mushroomed in the last decade and many of MBA students and professionals are undergoing MBA education to be better equipped for the growing economy. All the sides of management education such as quality of curriculum, MBA aspirants, faculty in management education business research, quality of research, industry-institute interaction, MDP, faculty development programmes, placements, compensation packages of MBA, career development path of alumni, diversity among faculty as well as students, governance and accountability, etc. are under critical scanner. This paper is an effort to examine the current issues in management education system in India and to find out ways for quality improvements in the present management education system so that business schools respond to current situation. All the sides of management education such as quality of curriculum, MBA aspirants, faculty in management education business research, quality of research, industry-institute interaction, MDP, faculty development programmes, placements, compensation packages of MBA, career development path of alumni, diversity among faculty as well as students, governance and accountability, etc. are under critical scanner. However, a very important question arises i.e. what special or extra needs to be done in order to make the Management education more effective and Industry Oriented. One of the very crucial elements that need to be incorporated is the involvement of corporate sector in the management education, to make it effective and industry oriented, since only the corporate Sector is the direct beneficiary of the higher and management education. There are around 4000 management institutes in India.
