MIS faculty collaboration in research and journal publication

PurposeThis study applies D3.js and social network analysis (SNA) to examine the impact of collaboration patterns, research productivity patterns and publication patterns on the Ministry of Education (MOE) evaluation policies across all Management Information Systems (MIS) departments in Taiwan.Design/methodology/approachThis study first retrieved data from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan (MOST) website from 1982 to 2015, the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) website, the Web of Science (WOS) website and Google Scholar. Then it applied power-law degree distribution, cumulative distribution function, weighted contribution score, exponential weighted moving average and network centrality score to visualize the MIS collaborations and research patterns.FindingsThe analysis concluded that most MIS professors focused primarily on SCIE-/SSCI-/TSSCI-/core indexed journals after 2005. Professors from public universities were drawn to collaboration and publishing in high-quality-based journals, while professors from private universities focused more on quantity-based publications. Female professors, by contrast, have a slightly higher single-authorship publication rate in SCIE-/SSCI-/TSSCI-indexed journals than do male professors. Meanwhile, professors in northern Taiwan emphasized quantity-based journal publications, while a focus on quality was more typical in the south. Furthermore, National Cheng Kung University has the most single-authorship or intrauniversity publications in SCIE-/SSCI-/TSSCI-/core journals, and National Sun Yat-Sen University published more SSCI-indexed articles than SCIE-indexed articles. All of these findings show that there is an explicit relation between MOE evaluation policies and MIS faculty members' collaboration/publication strategies.Originality/valueThe above findings explain how MOE evaluation policies affected MIS faculty members' collaboration and publication strategies in Taiwan, and the authors hope that such findings can constitute a resource for understanding and characterizing networking with MIS departments in Taiwan.

The Effect of Applying Electronic Classes to Support Students' Creative Thinking of Students A Survey of the Opinions of a Sample of Students in the Management Information Systems Department using the Google classroom platform

This research aims to study the effect of electronic classes on the creative thinking of students of the College of Administration and Economics / Department of Management Information Systems and using the quantitative approach and the research community students of the College of Administration and Economics. To statistically process the data, the researchers used regression, correlation, percentages, and frequency analysis through distributing the questionnaires to a sample of (50) students from the Faculty of Administration and Economics / Department of Management Information Systems, and by using the statistical packages program Minitab v.17. The researchers relied on questions specific to the electronic classes and on the Google classroom platform in formulating questions and on the Torrance test for creative thinking by testing the student's (fluency, flexibility, originality, problem-sensing, details) capabilities. The researchers concluded that teaching based on electronic classes has an effective effect in raising creative thinking for students and that the capabilities of creative thinking grow and develop due to training and practice and the use of methods and methods that stimulate the brain to think and be creative.

Assessing the Conformity Level of Information Security Management System of the Higher Education Institutions: Basis for the Development of Policies and Guidelines

Data is considered as the main asset in every organization. Hence, security management is important in order to protect the important information of the organization. The study assesses the higher education institutions (HEI) information security management system and check if they conform to the ISO27001 standards. Standardized ISO27001 assessment questionnaire was the main tool in gathering the data needed for the study. The director of Management Information System department of the higher education institutions were the respondents of the study. Results showed that majority of the indicators of the ISO27001 standards were addressed by the HEI’s. However, there is a need for the HEI’s to conform to other indicators in the standards specially those indicators which were not practiced by the HEI’s.

The Citation Analysis of Dissertations in the Field of Management Information Systems in Turkey

The aim of this study is to perform a citation analysis of dissertations completed at the Department of Management Information Systems (MIS) in Turkey between 2006 and 2018. For this purpose, a total of 177 dissertations including 173 master’s and 4 doctoral dissertations were analyzed through citation analysis to investigate general characteristics and bibliometric features. The key findings show that the average number of dissertations completed per year was 14 and there is not a common pattern for the distribution of completed dissertations by the years. Most of the dissertations were completed at Bogazici University (45%) and Gazi University (26%). An average dissertation was 121 pages long. The average number of citations in dissertations was 76, and journals received more than half of the citations (52%) while books did 27%, electronic publications 14%, theses 5% and other types of documents/sources 2%. More than half of the journals (61%), the most frequently used source type in dissertations, were in English. “Information Management”, “Management Information Systems (MIS) Quarterly” and “Journal of Marketing” were among the most frequently cited journals. “Fred. D. Davis”, “Viswanath Venkatesh” and “Icek Ajzen” were the most frequently cited authors. The mean half-life of the sources cited in the dissertations was 7,3 years. This study is the first one which has analyzed the dissertations completed at MIS Departments in Turkey through the citation analysis method. In this respect, the findings can be used to examine the intellectual features of MIS discipline/field in Turkey and to create core library collections in the field. Moreover, this study is expected to be a pioneering one for similar citation analysis and bibliometric studies related to other types of sources in addition to dissertations and for other researchers in the field of MIS in the future.

Understanding Faculty Collaboration and Productivity: A Case Study

Research productivity has been always an important part of every academic’s job, since it has a profound effect on faculty promotion and tenure decisions. In addition, some scholars believe that co-authorship between faculty members has a great impact on their academic life and faculty advancement. Since 2005, the Ministry of Education of Taiwan (MOE) has developed two university programs and evaluation policies for improving the competitiveness and internationalization of Taiwan universities, and has clearly stated that there is a strong relationship between faculty promotion and research performance. However, none of them has used social network analysis (SNA) to examine research productivity and co-authorship under two university programs and evaluation policies from MOE in Taiwan. Therefore, in this study, we first uses SNA to analyze the research productivity, collaboration patterns, and publication strategies of faculty members in a Management Information Systems (MIS) department at a national university in Taiwan. Then, we used D3, a well-known drawing tool to create data visualization using JavaScript libraries, to visualize and discuss how these two university programs and evaluation policies from the MOE affected these patterns and strategies. We hope that our study not only provides beneficial information to the MIS department, but can be treated as an important source for MOE committees in their future adjustment of university programs and policies.

The influences of knowledge loss and knowledge retention mechanisms on the absorptive capacity and performance of a MIS department

Purpose – Knowledge loss impact on the performance of management information system (MIS) departments due to its influence on absorptive capacity. Furthermore, knowledge retention in human resource management and information system application is also included in the research model, in order to examine their effectiveness in mitigating knowledge loss. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Survey method and hypotheses are tested with the collected data from 191 Taiwanese IS personnel. Findings – The results not only indicate knowledge loss has impacts on the absorptive capacity and performance of MIS departments while information systems could mitigate knowledge loss, but also provide deeper understanding of knowledge loss and potential issues for academics; as for practitioners, this study could serve as a reference to design and adopt knowledge management (KM) mechanisms. Originality/value – KM is an important issue for organizations since it is the source of competitive advantages and excellent performance, although the investment in KM is not necessary effective in retaining knowledge. This study conducts survey to examine the influences of knowledge loss in MIS departments, since the high turnover rate of employees and the rapid environmental changes in technical world may worsen the situation. According to dynamic capability theory, absorptive capacity is a critical ability to have while facing turbulent environment.

Design and Implementation of an HCI course for MIS students – Some lessons

Courses on Human Computer Interaction (HCI) largely differ in the conception of the role of the course in the program, in the topics to be included, in emphases, in the instructional strategies that are employed, and more. This paper describes the design and implementation of a HCI course for students of the Management Information Systems department in our college. Students’ intermediate and final homework assignments were analyzed to provide feedback for the course design. Quantitative analysis showed high correlation between the quality of the requirement analysis performed by the students and the quality of the final interface prototype, and also that the quality of design alternatives that were considered by the students can be a good predictor for the quality of the overall interface design. Qualitative analysis of students’ submissions showed the need for practicing skills required in users’ studies, especially conducting interviews and observations. Implications from these and other findings are discussed.

Using unique assignments for reducing the bimodal grade distribution

This article describes a study that was intended to reduce the bimodal grade distribution of students of the Management Information Systems department. Unlike the normal distribution that represents many natural groups, a bimodal distribution represents two, sometimes unique, sub-populations within one group. There are many studies of the causes of this phenomenon; however, this study is mainly concerned with finding ways to reduce it. The significance of a bimodal distribution lies in its ability to predict future failures, especially in the lower sub-population. Dealing with these future failures is important due to the sharp reduction in the number of enrolled students and the increase in the dropout rate that has stemmed from various reasons. This eight-year study focused on strengthening students' learning habits, which played a significant role in increasing students' overall motivation and levels of self-accountability and produced a more homogeneous group, as represented by the normal grade distribution.

Effective Learning Outcomes Assessment: The Case of the MIS Department at the UoS

Accrediting organizations now mandate the development of learning outcomes (LO) and the methods to assess those learning outcomes for national and international institutions of higher learning. Because of this, academic institutions pay greater attention to the development and assessment of these LO. There are two types of learning outcomes: course outcomes and program outcomes. This paper presents an empirical study that examines both kinds of LO in a case study of one course (title: Database Fundamental and Applications, number: 0303331) within the Management Information System (MIS) department at the University of Sharjah (UoS), United Arab Emirates and presents the following with regard to this case study: 1) the development process of the LO for this specific course; 2) the data collection process, and 3) the data collected related to the assessment instruments for both the course and program LO (course learning instructions, course exams, course projects, students’ records, students’ grades, course reports, course evaluation, instructor evaluation, exit surveys, employer surveys, and job placement indicators); 4) the methods of assessment of the LO based on the analysis of the collected data using a variety of analysis technique and tools; and 5) the usage of the analysis results in successive semesters in order to improve the MIS courses and program. The findings of this empirical study suggest several areas for improvement. One improvement is the addition of more practice-based learning components. Additionally, the study shows that the enhancement of the course material, the improvement of teaching strategies, and the usage of technology and its infusion into the learning process are areas that can improve LO. Overall, the method of LO development and assessment described in this empirical examination has shown a positive effect on the courses and program in the MIS department, and it is believed that the results can be generalized for use by others in developing and assessing LO in other learning institutions.

Student Profiling on Academic Performance Using Cluster Analysis

This study is carried out in Management Information System (MIS) department which accepts students from general and vocational high schools with widely varying range of educational backgrounds. As an emerging interdisciplinary field, MIS education demands both technical and managerial skills from its students. However, students with different backgrounds have to pursue the same diversified set of courses. The aim of this study is to investigate students’ segments and profiles based on the various dimensions of academic abilities they possess, by performing cluster analysis. The data set consists of the student official grade for the required courses. First, dimensionality of the course grades is reduced to a few independent abilities by performing factor analysis. The summed scales representing the independent factors are then used in the cluster analysis to obtain student segments. Finally, variation of the student background measured by high school type is profiled for each segment. The students from general high schools have been more successful in MIS education compared to students from vocational schools where only the basic knowledge on management or computer skills is offered. The results of this analysis are also utilized in shaping various macro and micro level strategies in our MIS department.

Analyzing Teaching Performance of Instructors Using Data Mining Techniques

Student evaluations to measure the teaching effectiveness of instructor's are very fre- quently applied in higher education for many years. This study investigates the factors associated with the assessment of instructors teaching performance using two different data mining tech- niques; stepwise regression and decision trees. The data collected anonymously from students' evaluations of Management Information Systems department at Bogazici University. Additionally, variables related to other instructor and course characteristics are also included in the study. The results show that, a factor summarizing the instructor related questions in the evaluation form, the employment status of the instructor, the workload of the course, the attendance of the students, and the percentage of the students filling the form are significant dimensions of instructor's teaching performance.

Creativity of student information system projects: From the perspective of network embeddedness

Many companies have pursued innovation to obtain a competitive edge. Thus, educational reform focuses mainly on training creative students. This study adopted the concept of an affiliated network of projects to investigate how project embeddedness influences project team creativity. This work surveys 60 projects in a Management Information Systems Department of a University. Validity of the specific study hypotheses is tested by using moderate hierarchical regression analysis to determine how project embeddedness affects project team creativity and assess how the team innovation climate moderates the relationships between project embeddedness and project team creativity. Analytical results indicate a positive association between structural embeddedness and project team creativity, a negative relationship between positional embeddedness and project team creativity, and a positive influence of team innovation climate on the relationships between network embeddedness and project team creativity. An attempt is also made to understand the role of positional embeddedness by classifying the interactions based on the content of interactions. According to those results, positional embeddedness is positively related to project team creativity during problem–identification interaction; during solution–design interaction, positional embeddedness is negatively related to project team creativity. Results of this study explain the phenomena of divergent thinking and convergent thinking during creative development.

Integrating Curriculum Across Courses in the Same Semester and Across Semesters Using a Service Learning Project

Management Information Systems (MIS) departments are tasked with preparing students to successfully work for organizations in information technology (IT)related jobs. Accordingly, MIS departments develop a curriculum that provides both technical depth and business acumen. Typically, the business core provides the business acumen and the department’s curriculum provides technical depth. The courses that contribute to this technical depth include domains of programming, networking, database, systems analysis and design plus additional domains as electives. Each course is taught as a stand-alone course, and, although it may have one or more of the other MIS courses as prerequisites, integration across courses is minimal. The problem with this approach is that the different areas in MIS are tightly related. For example, programming a system requires an understanding of business requirements and design on which to write the programs. Programs that access a database using structured query language (SQL) statements require an understanding of the underlying data model, which is built based on functional requirements. At best, integration includes ensuring that prerequisites cover material needed for a particular course and discussing the interrelationships among the topics covered, often via a capstone course that ostensibly integrates all of the material from the previous courses. We propose and take an innovative, holistic approach to integration. Three faculty members teaching the systems analysis and design (SAD), the database management (DB), and the capstone database and development (CAP) courses integrated their courses using a common service learning project. This project consists of conducting a SAD, including a detailed database design and preliminary implementation during two courses in one semester. GENERATING STUDENT INTEREST IN THE INFORMATION SYSTEMS MAJOR: A STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK FOR THE INTRODUCTORY COURSE

This paper describes an enrollment problem and the solution for the introductory course developed by the faculty members in the Management Information Systems Department at Ohio University’s College of Business. The solution is a method of introducing information systems (IS) to students that often leaves them wanting to return to the subject area again in the form of a major or minor. The method is presented as a framework which readers can adopt within their own departments. This framework demonstrates how to introduce information systems as an interesting and fun area of study, provide lasting value, and teach students to teach themselves. The method builds upon existing literature in the areas of information systems, management education, education in higher education, communications, marketing, and psychology.

CHANGING STUDENTS ATTITUDES, SATISFACTION AND INTENTIONS OF SERVICE-LEARNING IN MIS COURSES

Service-learning courses offer department of management information systems (MIS) students the opportunity to create and implement systems in realworld, public service-oriented social contexts. Students provide government and non-profit agencies information systems services and solutions via the community service activity . The survey was conducted on 146 students who were enrolled in a system analysis and software development (SA & SD) course in an MIS department at a comprehensive university. The student subjects were divided into two groups by their class. After they finished the course, the students were asked to complete a questionnaire. The analytical results of our investigation indicate service learning adoption model has differences between service-learning and non-service-learning students. Those interested in promoting service learning may find these results helpful in guiding their efforts.

Advanced manufacturing technology adoption and performance: the role of management information systems departments

This study uses information obtained from the advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) literature to develop a conceptual framework that seeks to illustrate the impact of the management information systems (MIS) department on the different facets of AMT adoption. A detailed survey instrument was administered to a cross‐section of manufacturing firms in the USA to collect the data required to test five hypotheses relating to the efficacy of this framework. The results of this study indicate that the proposed framework is particularly useful in explaining the role of MIS departments in firms that are attempting to integrate advanced process and information technologies. This finding and other results of this study and their implications are discussed.

Successful project teams: a study of MIS managers

A study of 492 management information systems (MIS) managers was conducted to determine the degree of satisfaction with MIS project teams and the factors associated with successful teams. In general, project teams met, and in many cases, exceeded expectations. Respondents were divided into two groups: managers whose expectations were exceeded and those whose expectations were not. Test of differences showed that only one characteristic, the size of the MIS department, significantly distinguishes between these two groups. In addition, the two groups were tested for differences in attitudes toward items that have been noted in the literature as being either an advantage or disadvantage of project management. Many statistically significant differences were found. An analysis of the possible reasons for these results and a discussion of their practical significance are given.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

MIS at IBM: Improving the Business Through Better Communications

Our topic is MIS (management information systems), and the twist I want to give it is the executive perspective. Ask chief executive officers if MIS is important to their businesses, and unanimously they'll say yes. Ask information officers the same question and, obviously, you'll get the same answer. But go a step further and ask them why it's important then the agreement isn't so clear. Part of the reason is perspective. Most information officers concentrate on the internal operations of the business, making it run better. A CEO looks behind these operations to customers, suppliers, and competitors. Today, I want to submit that those views are really two sides of the same coin. However, the danger is that MIS specialists within an organization may lose sight of or not even be aware of an organization's business goals when, in fact, they are in an ideal position to develop ways of meeting those goals more effectively. What I'd like to do this afternoon is tell you a little about IBM; how we use MIS, and how it helps us be more competitive. Then I'd like to discuss what we believe CEOs in other companies are looking for from their MIS departments.
