Drivers of low-carbon practices in green supply chain management in construction industry: An empirical study in China

Understanding the drivers of low-carbon practices in green supply chain management in the construction industry is essential because it largely addresses the major problem of global warming due to carbon dioxide emissions. The purpose of this study is to investigate key drivers of low-carbon practices in green supply chain management in construction industry. Based on institutional theory, relational view theory, and self-determination theory, three drivers for low-carbon practices were identified, namely, environmental regulation, supply chain relationship, and organizational culture. Then a questionnaire was administered and data were collected from the owners, contractors, designers, and other relevant parties of the construction project. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyze data. The results show that supply chain relationship and organizational culture are positively and directly correlated with the low-carbon practices level of green supply chain management. In addition, this study also found that organizational culture partially mediates the relationship between supply chain relationship and low-carbon practices. Contrary to expectations, environmental regulation has no direct effect on practices, while supply chain relationship and organizational culture fully mediate the relationship between environmental regulation and practices. As limited research has been conducted to examine the drivers for green supply chain management low-carbon practices in the construction industry, this study bridges the knowledge gap and contributes to the current knowledge system of green supply chain management. Additionally, the findings of this study can provide authorities and practitioners with a deeper understanding of low-carbon practices in green supply chain management, and helping to propose more feasible measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve environmental performance.

Potential for synergetic integration of Building Information Modelling, Blockchain and Supply Chain Management in construction industry

Construction industry nowadays is facing several key issues as the likes of cost and time overruns and unstable business environment which lead to suppressed profitability, quality, and stakeholder satisfaction. Studies have suggested, an improved Supply Chain Management (SCM) towards Sustainable Supply Chain (SSCM) could help in this regard, however there are barriers observed to its implementation in the construction industry. Building Information Modelling (BIM) too is considered a positive disrupter in the construction industry due to the potential in its applications, and one of such potential is improving the SCM. However, similar to SCM, adoption of BIM faces several barriers. Preliminary review suggests that some of its barriers could be resolved by integrating with Blockchain, another disruptor stemming from Industry 4.0. Hence, this paper attempts to assess how the synergy of BIM and blockchain would improve the SCM of the construction industry. For that purpose, through a systematic literature review, the paper structures the barriers of SCM, and barriers and benefits of BIM and blockchain in construction industry across the dimensions of Socio-technical, Industrial, Organizational, Financial, Legal and Institutional, and Sustainability, and conceptually maps the barriers and benefits to identify their collective impact on SCM. From this study it was found that with the help of Blockchain integration, there are a number of potential synergies that may solve critical inherent issues in both BIM and SCM, such as reluctance of information sharing and trust, sustainability concerns and safety, leading to positive cumulative impact on SCM. However, it was also recognized that there can be negative as well as neutral cumulative impacts on areas such as cost, and lack of personnel, knowledge and institutional support that can lead to an opposite impact.

Overcoming barriers to smart safety management system implementation in the construction industry

The reliance on networked technologies in construction safety and health management is expected to increase; however, studies have reported potential resistance to the broad implementation of smart technologies within structured construction safety management systems (SMS). This study examines the challenges and drivers impacting the implementation of smart SMS in the construction industry using quantitative and qualitative research methods. The current state of safety knowledge and practices was reviewed and critical insights were obtained from construction industry practitioners. To identify barriers and solutions to implementing smart technologies in construction safety management, a literature review was conducted. Based on this review and semi-structured expert interviews, a survey was developed and distributed to U.S. construction industry management to assess their perceptions of these barriers and strategies. The study revealed 24 implementation barriers of which 14 were considered critical with mean normalized values ≥ 0.50. These barriers were categorized into four groups – organization, infrastructure, cost, and system integration-related barriers based on the correlation between the four different groups. Sixteen strategies that could help overcome these challenges and improve the integration of IoT-SMS technologies were uncovered and discussed. The findings from this study extend technology implementation theories by proposing an organization-infrastructure-cost-system integration framework for SMS implementation. Moreover, the study creates a foundation for evaluating barriers and strategies associated with implementing technology-driven SMS in the construction industry, thereby advancing research at the intersection of SMS and emerging technologies.

Analysis of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) Risk Management in Construction Industry (Case Study: Construction of Natural Gas Transmission Pipelines)

The need for gas in Indonesia is currently quite urgent, but the infrastructure to provide natural gas supplies for industry is inadequate, so the government is encouraging the development of national natural gas infrastructure. In this project, build facilities including Tie-in at the Onshore Receiving Facilities (ORF) and then build a pipeline. The ORF consists of various large instruments, the installation process of which requires the assistance of heavy equipment such as a crane. Instrument installation work at ORF using a crane is included in the critical & extreme risk because the placement will use more than one crane and this work is carried out on a platform. Apart from that, the ORF was built next to an existing LPG station, so this condition has its own potential danger. To find out the source of the biggest risks, risks that may occur, methods of risk mitigation, and the level of effectiveness of the mitigation provided, occupational safety and health risk management analysis could be carried out using the House of Risk (HOR) and Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & Determining Control (HIRADC) method. Lifting activities on the ORF platform was the biggest source of danger and there were 15 possible risks that may occur, 3 risk agents were in the mobilization of heavy equipment activities (cranes), 5 risk events were in the crane placement activities and 7 risk events were from material transport activities and there were 36 risks agents in it, 9 risk agents for mobilization activities, 11 risk agents for crane placement activities and 14 risk agents for material transport activities. Of the 36 risk agents, 16 of them have high potential, so suggestions for risk mitigation actions were given using the HOR phase II method. By conducting discussions, there were 48 mitigation action plans that were able to reduce the potential of risk agents with 36 main preventive actions, namely suggestions for mitigation actions that had difficulty value 3 or easy to implement. After assessing the recommended preventive actions, an assessment is carried out that there was a reduction in the level of risk using the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & Determining Control (HIRADC) method, where there were 3 medium risk categories and 13 low-risk categories. Before recommendations for risk mitigation actions, there were 3 extreme risk categories and 13 high risk categories.

Analytical Study of Risk Analysis and Role of Project Management in Construction Industry

Abstract: The objective of this research is to study the risk analysis and project management in construction industry. The benefits of risk management are not confined to large or risky projects. The process may be formalized in these circumstances, but it is applicable for all scales of project and procurement activity. It can be applied at all stages in the project cycle, from the earliest assessments of strategy to the supply, operation, maintenance and disposal of individual items, facilities or assets. This study stressed on many aspects on the subject of project management in terms of problems and impediments, and suggested solutions through this project, in order to motivate and develop the management of the projects. It project is involves stage by stage construction industry facing issues and its solutions by various approaches like Questionnaires, qualitative method and quantitative method etc... Aim of this project to investigate the current level of application of project management and the obstacles that have prevented its introduction in the Indian construction industry. Then the exploitation of each project will be documented and used in future work

Sustainable practices in construction project management: impacts on triple bottom line

There are many possibilities to improve sustainable management in construction industry. In this context, this article aims to analyze the influence of construction practices, organized in factors, in sustainability dimensions. For this, a survey with 80 project managers from construction industry was performed. The participants answered about the sustainable management practices used in their projects, as well as their performance in relation to indicators in the social, economic and environmental dimensions. The data were analyzed via Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Logistic Regression. It was possible to verify that not all the analyzed factors (as well as the practices that compose them) can be considered significant to explain all the dimensions of sustainability. Another interesting finding is that the influence levels of the factors vary widely, indicating that some factors are more important than others in the pursuit of (one or more) sustainability dimensions. In addition, contrary to expectations, not all factors (and therefore not all practices) have a positive impact on the sustainability of construction projects. The Resource management and pollution factor negatively influences Economic sustainability. This study sought to contribute to broaden the understanding of the sustainable practices in construction project management and guide future analysis and research.

Health Hazards and Safety Management in Construction Industry Using Linear Regression Model

Abstract: In construction industry and workplaces, accidents pose significant challenges to survival. This study was carried out with the aims to know the relationship between the safety training and workers behaviour with job performance. A total of 127 responses have been recorded in which 43 responses where from stakeholders and 84 responses from workers of construction sites. To test the validity of the hypothesis and determine its significance by linear regression model, SPSS software was used. Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which was 0.90 and indicates good and consistent, was first used to assess the data's reliability. It concluded that the safety trainings education and workers behaviour have a strong and positive impact on the job performance of workers. The provision of welfare facilities, the provision of personal protective equipment, and worker training on safety procedures are critical measures needed to address occupational safety and health issues confronting workers on building construction sites. The government must demonstrate its political commitment by putting into effect the current legislation and developing occupational safety and health regulations

Using cased based reasoning for automated safety risk management in construction industry

The purpose of this study is to develop a CBR-based platform that integrates all steps of safety risk management (SRM) for the realization of automation in construction safety risk management. To realize this purpose, accident data from 2015 to 2020 in China has been collected and analyzed. Based on the collected data, this study adopts system thinking and stakeholder theory to establish an accident attribute system for accurate and comprehensive case representation, which was usually ignored in the previous study. Following case representation, the development process of case-based reasoning (CBR) is introduced in detail. The core of CBR—case retrieval is designed with the k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) algorithm and rough set theory to improve retrieval accuracy. In terms of case reuse and revise, a hybrid risk response model based on historical experience and risk factor control is proposed. Finally, the practical application of this study is illustrated with a specific construction project. The findings of this study confirm the feasibility of machine learning in improving safety performance at construction sites. Construction accidents can be effectively prevented by identifying the potential safety risks, and employing on-site management.

A Development of Human Capital in the Context of Health and Safety Management in Construction

In construction industry Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) involves the development and implementation of measures to ensure the socio-economic efficiency of enterprises. By creating a safe work culture and environment for workers OHS is considered to raise human dignity in workplaces. As human capital develops to a high level it combines legal, social-economic, organizational-technical, sanitary-hygiene, and treatment-prophylaxis at workplaces. Current research states the human capital development approach from three aspects: health (state of health, occupational health, sanitation, and hygiene); knowledge (education, like-mindedness, mentoring, training), and professional skills (esteem, skills, skills, professional development) from the digitalization prospectives. The econometric methods involved are Latent Class Analysis for accounting the cross-sectional relationship and post estimation concerns in the data. The results denote the hypothesis were proven OHS investment has a positive effect on work personality in the construction industry and Organizational performance has a positive effect at work_experience and flexibility of the workers in the construction industry. Besides, another finding in this study shows that work effectiveness has a positive effect on OHS_investment and flexibility in the construction industry. Therefore, these findings necessitate the human capital in the context of health and safety management in construction industry. More importantly, human capital development should be prioritized for transforming the curse of the natural resources into blessing for these nations. Therefore, we recommend that the researcher and policymakers should promote human capital development regulation in construction sector from the digitaliztion prospective.

Assessment of quantity surveyor’s perception on risk management practice in construction projects in Ebonyi state

The roles of Quantity Surveyors, who are the construction economists is to support cost effectiveness of construction projects planning through the pre-construction stage to post construction stage of projects. Despite being recognized as a professional discipline, Quantity Surveyors are not immune to the threats and risks in their operating environment. Consequence of which when poorly managed may be detrimental to Quantity Surveying practice and overall performance of construction project. Therefore, the study assesses the risk management techniques of the Quantity Surveyors in construction projects with a view of enhancing a better performance in project delivery. The construction industry is subject to more risk than any other industry. Risk management has become an integral process in managing construction projects. To complete most construction project on time, minimizing cost and wastages proper risk management techniques must be employed. Some authors of journals, conferences, text written by professional were consulted and datas were collected with the aid of well-structured questionnaires administered to forty six (46) respondents. The data generated were further analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as percentages, frequencies and mean index score (MIS). The research findings identified that most Quantity Surveyors understand and practice risks management in construction industry while very few practice it unknowingly (i.e they do not really understand it) financial, design and physical risk were discovered as some of the most sources of risk in construction projects. Also risk reduction is most popular among the professional Quantity Surveyors as methods and tools for managing and mitigating risks respectively in construction projects. The study concludes that the most sources of risk in construction project delivery often experienced by the Quantity surveyors are financial and design risks. The recommendations suggest that the client should consult competent and qualified professional Quantity Surveyors from the early stage through the completion stage of a construction project. The professional Quantity Surveyors should continue to acquire new skills through training and retraining to meet the changing nature of construction environment.

Influence of Employees Motivational Factors on Total Quality Management Implementation in the Construction Industry

This study determines the employees’ motivational factors and their influence on Total Quality Management (TQM) implementation in the construction industry. The instrument used in the study was a survey questionnaire with a sample size of 536 out of the 641 questionnaires which were administered to population consists of top management in the Ghanaian construction industry. The analysis was carried out using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) technique. The study identified the following motivational factors that influence the successful implementation of TQM in the construction industry: Teamwork, Recognition of employees, Conducive working environment, Employee involvement in TQM activities, Education and training/re-training of staff, Salary/position promotion, Bonus scheme, Employee commitment, Employee reward, and Availability of a suggestion forum for employees. The findings revealed that all the motivational factors considered in the study have a high influence on TQM implementation in the construction industry. The study therefore suggests that managers should consider these identified motivational factors when applying the principle of Total Quality Management in the construction industry. Consequently, employees that are motivated with these identified motivational factors will help to achieve successful implementation of TQM in the construction industry and subsequently give their best effort to accomplish the job.

Risk resources management influence on public–private partnership risk management in construction industry. Confirmatory factor analysis approach

Purpose Construction organisations cannot underestimate the improvement in public–private partnership (PPP) projects’ implementation. At the same time, construction organisations cannot overlook the risk arising from engaging in PPP construction projects. Hence, this study aims to establish the influence of risk resource management (RRM) in managing PPP risk in the construction industry in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach The researchers adopted qualitative and quantitative research methods to achieve the aim of the study, in which Delphi questions and a close-ended questionnaire were developed. A total of 650 construction specialists, including procurement officers, consultants, project managers, quantity surveyors, site engineers and planning officers were chosen using random and purposive sampling techniques. Recovered data were analysed using descriptive statistics and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The CFA maximum likelihood estimation extractor compresses 19 variables into 3 pattern matrices. Findings The results of the study revealed three factors that measure RRM in Ghana’s PPP construction industry, including financial resource management which was influenced by communicating the budget to project team members and project partners understanding the budget, and material resource management which was influenced by the provision of materials transportation and provision of delivery programs and labour resource management which was impacted by a commitment to pay social security and taxes and provision of good salaries, to address RRM in PPP construction organisations. Research limitations/implications To incessantly improve the PPP risk management (RM) in construction through RRM, there should be a strong liaison between the universities, government agencies and the construction industry, and such collaboration will assist the industry to obtain first-hand information regarding the study findings and how they can be implemented to help the development of RM in the construction industry. This study is limited to Ghana and CFA and further study should explore structural equation model to determine the structure and measurement model of the risk resource variables. Originality/value The study may be valuable to industry stakeholders looking for new approaches to improve RM in their construction activities, particularly in PPP projects. Also, to assist reduce PPP risk, construction companies should use RRM in their organisations.

Impact of covid-19 on supply chain management in construction industry in Kashmir

The building industry has become a critical economic sector for country’s development. Due to covid-19, world’s most industrialised countries saw significant declines in their GDP. An effective supply chain system ensures higher efficiency rates, better customer relationship and service, reduced production costs and an overall improvement in the financial performance of a construction company. The entry of covid-19 in Kashmir has adversely impacted the supply chain of construction industry and the economy. So, there is a need to mitigate the impact of covid-19 pandemic on the supply chain management for the better future of construction industry. The aim of this paper is to capture the issues, challenges and implications of the covid-19 pandemic on supply-chain activities in Kashmir, India. This also provides strategies and insights on mitigating the risks and impact of the pandemic on supply chain management. Based on the issues identified, a questionnaire survey was conducted to assess the impact of these factors on supply chain management. Exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling was used to analyse the factors. The problematic causes include reduction in supply chain flexibility and difficulties in supply chain collaboration. There is a need to diversify the supply chains and avoid the single source of supply.

Impact of Sustainable Supply Chain Management in the Construction Industry

This paper aims to introduce the impact of sustainable supply chain management in the Pakistani construction industry and how it helps with the performance and Development of the construction industry. It aims to elaborate on and emphasize how a sustainable supply chain will be more effective the traditional construction management and its supply chains. A quantitative research method with a deductive approach was used to test research hypotheses. A sample of 154 respondents using a questionnaire responded for data analysis. In Pakistan, the market for a construction company is primarily local based and highly volatile. The assessment is carried out to determine the level of significance and degree of impact of supply chain management (SCM) and sustainability on the construction industry's performance. The results derived from the test show that SCM has a moderate impact leading to leading to increased performance. The lack of time and budget limited the focus to Karachi-based construction businesses, leaving other construction businesses in Pakistan as not relevant. The paper primarily focused on the Pakistan-based construction industry, and the articles that are a source for this study generated knowledge regarding various issues and opportunities associated with supply chain management in the Karachi-based construction industry.

A Review on Issues Confronted By Safety Team In Managing Safety Practices At Malaysian Construction Industry

There are several issues in managing safety practices in Malaysian construction industry which lead to project delay, cost overrun and greatly causes increase in of injuries and accident, not only to workers, but also affected to public nearby. Managing safety practices are widely known as responsibilities of safety team compared to other organizations involved in project management of construction industry. The purpose of this study is to analyze the issues confronted by safety teams in the construction industry in managing safety practices. As a consequence, the researcher has devised two (2) objectives in order to accomplish the study’s purpose; 1) to explore the role of safety team in managing safety practices in construction industry, and, 2) to identify the issues confronted by safety team in managing safety practices in Malaysian construction industry. By focusing on the issue, the safety team will have a better understanding of the situation and will be able to deal with it throughout the construction project. This study provides issues encountered in the Malaysian construction industry when it comes to managing safety practices. The issues recognized will serve as a basis for the safety team and assist them spot unnecessary dangers and risks. The conclusions of this study will raise awareness and assist safety teams in comprehending issues that emerge in the construction industry.

Bibliometric and systemic review of the state of the art of occupational risk management in the construction industry

Objectives. The objective of this study is to use bibliometric and systemic terms to select and analyze a set of articles dealing with occupational risk management in the civil construction industry. Methods . Knowledge development process – constructivist (ProKnow-C) methodology was used as an intervention instrument to guide the selection of the bibliographic portfolio and to support systemic analysis. Results. The bibliographic portfolio was created and included 20 articles. Bibliometric highlights were relevant articles, authors, countries of origin, journals and keywords. Systemic analysis showed opportunities to contribute to the state of the art in all areas of knowledge, enabling the researcher to understand theoretical bases, gaps and research opportunities for the theme and thus establish their research question in accordance with the established knowledge vision. Conclusions. The systemic analysis of each article in the bibliographic portfolio based on the decision support model and areas of knowledge present in each stage of its construction measures the amplitude of the knowledge at each stage, and therefore the completeness of or gaps in each article. This clarifies the overall state of and gaps in the field, showing opportunities for new research.

An Assessment of Risk Management Factors Delaying Construction Project in Nigeria

Risk management is a field that exists within the subject area of project management deals with the identification, monitoring and mitigation of risks. It is seen as the effect of uncertainty on objectives so this process serves as an optimization of the project delivery process to ensure that the project objectives are achieved. Risk results from a variety of factors like design problems, technological complexity and lack of experienced personnel. Managing these risks involves contemplating actions or measures. The study aimed at assessing risk management factors delaying construction project in Nigeria. The objectives were to examine the factors that influence the development of risk management in the construction industry and identify the level of knowledge, experience and barrier to risk management practice. The research approach adopted for this study was quantitative design. To cover the study area effectively, a field survey was utilized inform of a structured questionnaires for the major study population and anchored with semi-structured interviews for the secondary population and other relevant secondary data. 70 Professional Project Managers were sampled from different construction firm. Hence, 70 questionnaires were administered while 40 questionnaires were properly filled and returned for collation represents 57.1% response rate. Statistical tools was used for the study. The result confirms showed that Change in climactic condition is the major factor that influences the development of risk management in Nigerian construction industry. Result also suggests that majority of the respondents upheld the relevance of risk management practice in project management. The implication is that most though Professional Project Managers understood the relevance of risk management in the construction industry, they should always make provisions for uncertainties through effective risk management strategies.

An integrated methodology for green human resource management in construction industry.

Today, by increasing public awareness about environmental issues and pressures from governments and other stakeholders, companies have dealt with environmental challenges more than ever. This paper focuses on environmentally sustainable performance using an integrated methodology based on meta-synthesis, Delphi, and structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques which are utilized in different phases. In the first phase, an in-depth review of green human resources management (GHRM) literature is conducted based on the meta-synthesis method, and as a result, 38 codes are extracted. Next, to adapt and customize the codes with the nature of the construction industry, 2 rounds of Delphi method are implemented to extract the expert judgment from a panel of 15 industry professionals, resulting in 21 codes in 7 categories. To validate the developed methodology, a dataset from 33 Iranian construction companies are collected along with 15 factors in 5 categories determined using SEM. The findings reveal that among 9 main GHRM components extracted from the literature, just 5 components including green recruitment and selection, green performance management, green-reward, green-based employee empowerment, and green training have significant and positive relationships with GHRM. Finally, managerial insights, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.
