Environmental education as part of the training of future biologists at the university

Relevance. The relevance of this study is determined by the development of environmental and pedagogical competence in the training of future biology teachers in higher education institutions. The man-nature relationship must be introduced into the education system as a priority in the hierarchy of values, a component of the versatile development of the individual.Purpose. The purpose of this study is to discover ways and create methods for the development of environmental competence, which require environmental education and orient biology students towards a rational relationship between humans, nature, and the profession of a biology teacher.Methodology. Identification of organisational and methodological conditions contributes to the formation of environmental and pedagogical competence in the process of professional training of future biology teachers. The leading method of study is a pedagogical experiment.Results. The experiment revealed ways to develop environmental and pedagogical competence of students of biological specialities, educational programme - "Teacher Training in Natural Science". The main environmental components of the competence are identified and the motivation for the development of the competence stated in the subject is substantiated. The materials of the study are of practical value in the education system preparing future biology teachers in higher education institutions, through environmental education both for students and educators. Their students live in the modern world, in this regard, the conditions of the environment in which they live will depend on their training.Conclusions. The effectiveness of such studies depends not so much on the identified range of challenges outlined in the methodological literature, but rather on the teacher's internal position in the professional activity of promoting students' environmental literacy.

An Ecocritical Content Analysis of Man-Nature Relationship in Jesse Stuart's "Clearing in the Sky"

This study performs an Ecocritical content analysis of the representation of man and nature relationship as represented in Jesse Stuart's "Clearing in the Sky". The key themes focused on are Man-Nature relationships, Landscape as Character, Human Interaction with the Environment, and Ecological Consciousness, environmental motifs and the portrayal of the natural world within the text. The purpose of the study is to explore the Ecocritical dimensions portrayed in "Clearing in the Sky." The content analysis investigates the representation of nature, animals, birds, mountains, and fruit in the text and the complex interplay between humans and the natural environment as portrayed in Stuart's his most influential work. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the ecological dimensions of man-nature relationships, and their impact on humans within the literary text. Jesse Stuart has portrayed a positive picture of a man-nature relationship and reinforced the close bond between Jess's father and nature.

Of Wastelands and Ecopoetics: An Ecocritical Reading of T. S. Eliot’s Poetry.

This article is an ecocritical study of three of T. S. Eliot’s most notable works: “The Waste Land”, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, and “The Hollow Men”. The poems are analyzed in detail and in relation with one another to highlight Eliot’s understanding of man’s relationship with nature through an elemental, ecomythical, and ecoreligious study. The article pursues a pattern in Eliot’s writing of a Man-Nature relationship as it focuses on the ways in which nature interacts with and influences man’s life, emotions, and faith.

Is Shame Morally Relevant to Ecological Ethics?

In recent years, we have seen a resurgence of the topic of shame in philosophy and moral philosophy. The paper analyses shame as a moral emotion in contemporary moral-philosophical and environmental discourse. Questions are articulated, in which different contexts shame has already been studied and which of them appear to be crucial for ethics and applied ethics? In the article, the author addresses the concept of environmental shame by Sarah E. Fredericks (2021) and considers the questions: is/can shame be ethically relevant for the cultivation of our attitudes in relation to the environment? Is Shame morally relevant to Ecological Ethics? Can the experience of shame affect our moral judgement, decision-making and action regarding the man-nature relationship? Despite the differences in the understanding of shame as a self-conscious emotion or as a social emotion, in the paper the author argues that environmental shame can have an important preventive function as well as a transformative power for the cultivation of our moral beliefs and attitudes.

An Eco Critical Reading of Lohani’s 'Gaia' and V.S. Rai’s 'Corona Says'

Environment is the indispensable domain of human beings which provides the larger platform of various activities. Essentially, violation of environmental ethics has been the hue and cry at present. This paper aims to explore the environmental issues imbedded in the poems of Shreedhar Lohani’s Gaia and Vishnu Singh Rai’s Corona Says. The purpose of this research is to explore and highlight the anthropocentrism, man-nature relationship and the consequences of the transgression of nature. This qualitative research investigates the select poems ‘Gaia’ and ‘Corona Says’ from an eco-critical approach. The qualitative method of interpretation is used to analyze both of the poems. The secondary data has been used to interpret the texts as they are published in the text books. An examination on these poems sheds lights on the idea that the random use of resources and human indifference to nature brings immeasurable consequences to human beings. The study concludes that the poems are thematically interconnected, rich in eco critical awareness and reaffirm that the excessive practice of any ideology either eco centrism or anthropocentrism has adverse effects on environment. From the study, it is deduced that green ecology and the ecological balance should be the new human agenda in the 21st century.

Deep Ecology: A Contemporary Response of Islam and Hinduism for sustaining Man-Nature Relationship in An Era of Environmental Crisis

Man, and nature are two inseparable entities. The bond between them is so inextricably interwoven that whatsoever happens to the phenomena of Earth is reflected on the life of man, and whatever is the action of man is sure to have impact on the natural resources. The modern secular worldview has changed the harmonious attitude of man and created disequilibrium in nature. The consideration of mankind as the master and possessor of nature has changed the sustainability of our home planet Earth and caused environmental crisis such as deforestation, desertification, biodiversity loss, climate change, water, air, and soil pollution. In this respect, the deep ecological approach of Islam and Hinduism describe the sacredness of earth and natural resources. It considers mankind as an equal partner with the rest of God’s creatures and is originated in the bosom of creation. In contemporary period, Seyyed Hossein N?sr, Fazlun Majeed Kh?lid, Mah?tm? Gandhi and Ranchor Pr?me as eco- religious scholars have tried to interpret the deep ecology of Islam and Hinduism. On the basis of deep ecology, they attempt to solve present ecological crisis in purely religious understandings. N?sr and Kh?lid tried to address these issues from an Islamic understanding of nature while Gandhi and Pr?me attempted to deal with ecological crisis from Hindu faith. This interfaith research presents a comparative analysis of the deep ecological thoughts of contemporary scholars of Islam and Hinduism to sustain Man-Nature relationship in 21st century. Through discussion of their eco-religious views, this paper motivates mankind to divert his negative destructive attitudes into positive constructive ones to avoid future catastrophes and to ensure the sustainability of natural resources.

Bioprecarity, Disposability, and the Poetics of Hope in Swarga

This article conceptualizes the everyday existential crisis of man, nature, including the planetary life as bioprecarity. It looks at the neoliberal capitalist economy that renders bios precarious. The bios incudes humans, more-than-humans, and natural resources in the Global South, available for value-generation of a select few. The article argues that disposability of bios triggers and expands neoliberal economy, thus turning entire life forms on the planet precarious. This horrendous task of erasing life-sustaining conditions and strengthening value-generation process can be abundantly found in Ambikasutan Mangad’s novel, Swarga (2017), which narrates the precarious man-nature relationship as a result of the extractive forces of neoliberalism. In the last section of the article, I turn to Phillip E Wegner’s conceptualization of “close-critical reading” paradigm as a poetics of hope in these dark times, thus highlighting how hope nourishes the fight of Enmakaje people against the capital-state complex.

Nature and Psychological Engineering: An Ecopsychological Study of Silko’s Ceremony

The study aims at investigating the relationship between the human mind crisis in relation to its immediate environment in Leslie Silko’s Ceremony. Ecological psychology is the study of the psychological origins of the ecological crisis, as well as the interaction between the human mind and the Earth's ecological crisis. An entirely new perspective and research methodologies have been provided by Ecological psychology for post-traumatic psychological healing as well as the proper handling of man-nature relationships. From an ecopsychological perspective, post-traumatic psychological resilience should be guided by ecological psychology theory, starting with ecological psychology regarding post-traumatic resilience, to establish a green eco- psychotherapy system, to attain harmony between nature and man, pay heed to trauma, and continue to grow. In the 1990s, the field of ecological psychology grew in popularity. Ecological psychology has made a positive attempt to investigate the core causes of the problems that human society and psychology have faced. It has a significant value in enforcing environmental consciousness, strengthening environmental learning, and expanding psychological research and application. In Ceremony, Tayo’s character is suffering post-traumatic conditions and environmental disconnection. When he refurbishes his relation with nature he gets healed and his mental peace returns. The study exhibits how significant it is to renew a good relationship between man and nature to bring and maintain joy and peace on Earth.

Social work in difficult times: emerging value frame in India

ABSTRACT The contemporary global milieu is ridden with multiple tensions and conflicts and India is no exception. India is witness to a number of challenges in its social, political and economic domains. While the tumultuous man–nature relationship has life-threatening ramifications, the social, economic and political contexts are also rife with diverse challenges characteristic of a globalised world order. The situation has been compounded by the daunting COVID pandemic, which has demonstrated the interconnectedness of global challenges and has wrought an unprecedented impact on the wellbeing of people. The social work profession in India must play a meaningful role in diffusing the crisis by promulgating values that extend and consolidate human solidarities and human environment symbiosis. Located within the context of India, and based on a reflective lifeworld approach, this article reflects on the nature and role of social work values in capacitating social workers to play a more resolute role in resolving present day predicaments. It articulates the need to look beyond generic values, glean a more context-specific value frame and herald the process of transferring these values to students through suitable means.

JOHN PASSMORE ON MAN’S RESPONSIBILITY FOR NATURE: IMPLICATIONS FOR DEFORESTATION IN NIGERIA

In current day Nigeria, the environmental problems are teething and little or nothing is being done to curb these problems. This work is on John Passmore’s Man’s Responsibility for Nature: Implications for deforestation in Nigeria. According to this study, deforestation is defined as the long-term drop of tree cover below the minimal 10 percent criterion. The work also exposes the views of Passmore, which is that man should see himself as a steward of nature and, therefore, should not adopt a despotic attitude in relation to nature but rather be a gardener of nature. The problem that this work addresses is that of human relations with the environment, which is said to be despotic. Thus, the work looks at the problem of deforestation, its causes, and its effects in Nigeria. The work employed the method of critical analysis to get a better understanding of the issue of deforestation in Nigeria and the implications of Passmore’s view on man’s responsibility for nature on the issue of deforestation in Nigeria. Consequently, the work recommends, amongst others, that Nigerians adopt Passmore’s view of man-nature relationship, where man is nothing but a steward and should take care of nature just as God takes care of man.

THE ENVIRONMENT AND COLONIALISM IN JAMAICA KINCAID’S LUCY AND MY GARDEN (BOOK)

This research paper sets out to show how Jamaica Kincaid, in her celebrated works, Lucy and My Garden (Book), intrinsically links the degradation of the environment to colonialism through memory even though most critics posit that men/women should preserve their environment.
 Purpose: To the protagonists, the environment brings back memory of subjugation and oppression that undermine man-nature relationship in Kincaid’s selected works.
 Methodology: Qualitative research was used to write this paper since it involves textual analysis. Information of this research paper was gathered from the primary sources (Lucy and My Garden (Book) and secondary sources. Post colonialism and ecocriticism were deemed suitable theories on which this research paper could be hitched, in order to show how the environment is related to colonialism. The paper stresses on Kincaid’s protagonists’ hostility to the environment. In fact, whenever they see elements of the environment, they reflect on colonial trauma.
 Findings: The traumatic feeling from the characters under study stifles their relationship with the environment despite the fact that environmentalists and ecofeminists advocate for a close relationship with nature and its preservation in order to combat the current environmental crisis.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This research, just like most environmentalists and ecofeminists will make people to understand that the natural environment is very vital to man and its preservation is a main concern for human beings. It will as well deepen discussion in the field of postcolonialism and ecocriticism. Readers of this article will help sensitize leaders of the world to stop colonialism so that the environment can be saved because traumatic memories are detrimental to the preservation of nature.

An Ecocritical Reading of D. H. Lawrence’s TheRainbow

This paper intends to analyze the Ecological elements in D. H. Lawrence's The Rainbow. It investigates the treatment of nature and how man and nature exchange mutual effects, through three generations, as man moves from rural to industrial era. It traces how the three generations of the Brangwens live in contradictions as they live in a transitional era from country life to city life. The environmental awareness of the Brangwens characters make them sensitive to their natural surroundings. Although the first generation women were attracted to the industrial lights, Ursula returns to nature to be in direct connection with nature. Ursula's unity with nature represents human survival from the industrial capitalist civilization. This attitude towards nature mirrors Lawrence's sound ecological inclinations. Lawrence denounces modern intellectual way of life based on dead mechanical principles. He uses his fiction, particularly The Rainbow, as a means to formulate and theorize his nostalgic doctrine of the organic, blood intimacy of nature as a contrast to the anarchy and apocalypse of modern life. He shows very early awareness of the dangers of modern industry and prophetically anticipated the late 20th century ecocriticism. He has a green thumb to point at the man-nature relationship. It discloses how Lawrence artistically reveals the dreadful effects caused by environmental crisis on nature world. It takes these two masterpieces of Lawrence as a model to show the of industrialism on imaginational literary mind, the description of nature in literature, the abuses of nature under the damaging hand of the human being, the ecofeminism that analyses the parallel between the oppressed women and oppressed nature.

Ameen F. Rihani's 'Biophilic Masculinity' in The Heart of Lebanon and The Rihani Essays

Now that we have reached the third millennium, an era associated with the onslaught of modernity, technology, industrialization and urbanization, it is time for our relationship with nature to undergo an ecological evolution through which a conservationist masculinity can develop. In this respect, it is particularly essential that literature provide a genuine modernized perspective, a biocentric understanding oriented towards a biophilic attachment to nature that centers on the affirmation of universal kinship based on the connection to all organic life. The cornerstone of the biophilia notion is a balanced
 man-nature relationship which is still undervalued in the realm of green literature. In this perspective, it is worth highlighting Ameen Fares Rihani’s edifying contribution to the realm of deep ecology. The works of this Lebanese-American writer and thinker have not been given sufficient attention when his prosaic oeuvre effectively reflects man’s regrettable alienation from the natural environment. In a sense, Rihani’s prose with its biophilic inclination is a crucial addition to the body of works concerned with restoring the gap between nature and mankind. This paper, therefore, attempts to study Rihani's approach to living nature from the perspective of evolutionary biology by shedding light on an unexplored aspect, namely his essentially biophilic conviction evident in his landmark book Qualb Lubnan (The Heart of Lebanon) and in Ar-Rihaniyyaat (The Rihani Essays). These works will be analyzed from a literary ecocritical perspective and against ecological masculinity which is the most recent interpretive paradigm of ecocriticism. This reading will also profess that Rihani's intention is to ecologize modern masculinity, Eastern and/or Western masculine thought, through re-designing an alternative future, a deep green future founded upon the biophilia hypothesis.

“Doing” ecocriticism: Oppressions of nature and animals in Philip Larkin’s poetry

ABSTRACT Far fewer studies have investigated Philip Larkin’s ecological awareness. While the poet problematizes physical nature and animals, the universal, east-and-west concerns of (non) human beings have been predominantly one-dimensional. This paper analyzes Larkin’s poetry, by paying specific attention to the poet’s precognition of a looming disaster that ecocritics and environmentalists later came to conceptualize as “the ecological crisis.” This article analyzes two poems by Larkin, chiefly, “Going, Going,” and “Take One Home for the Kiddies” in the context of natural environment and animal oppression. Larkin’s arguments on the human manipulation of nature eventually disruplts the Man-Nature relationship. By focusing on these two of Larkin’s poems, the wider application of rhetorical devices attests to the poet’s sensitivity, delineating an unstable alliance between human and non-human world(s).

O Regresso da natureza nas ciências humanas e sociais?

Este paper busca investigar qual a relação entre a abordagem sobre os fenômenos da natureza na Sociologia clássica de Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim e Max Weber e os seus principais conceitos sociológicos. Mediante o cenário do Antropoceno, surgido no início do século XXI, no qual a ação humana sobre a Terra foi evidenciada, as questões geosociais passaram a fundamentar uma nova ontologia em contraposição à ontologia que deu base à “questão social” dos autores clássicos da ciência sociológica, fato que influenciou vários cientistas, sobretudo das humanas e sociais, a uma reavaliação dos seus campos de estudo, destacando a partir de então os entrecruzamentos entre homem e natureza. Neste sentido, objetiva-se avaliar até que ponto a chamada “questão social” dos autores clássicos da Sociologia científica estava de fato restrita apenas aos aspectos humanos e se ela possuía algo de “geo” em sua construção teórica e conceitual. Por meio de uma história dos conceitos, no qual iremos proceder pela articulação entre conceitos diferentes com vistas a buscar identificar as proximidades e os distanciamentos, iremos articular a análise dos principais conceitos sociológicos aos conceitos sobre a relação homem-natureza. O perscrutar da pesquisa evidencia que os autores da Sociologia clássica não só atribuíram ação a objetos e fenômenos naturais quanto também apontaram determinadas “intervenções” destes no social, ainda que este seja por eles definido como algo estritamente humano. Observa-se, neste sentido, uma ambiguidade caracterizada pelo fato de que a natureza nunca foi por eles expulsa da (co)existência humana, ainda que tenha sido expulsa (do conceito de social) a partir da ontologia que deu base às suas obras.

An Ecological Interpretation of The Return of the Native

This essay aims to study The Return of the Native from the perspective of ecocriticism . Hardy indicates nature possesses its intrinsic value and nature and humans are equal in the ecological system. Human’s alienation from nature leads to the disharmonious man-nature relationship. It reveals the deep natural ecological thought contained in the novel: man should see nature’s intrinsic value and build harmonious man-nature relationship.

Man-Nature Relationship in L P Devkota’s Poems: An Ecological Study

Man-nature relationship is one of the central themes of great poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota. This relationship is both analogous and Antithetical. Nature is source of life, knowledge and pleasure foe human beings. But at the same time it is cruel and angry giving pain and suffering to human beings. Similarly, man both loves and exploits the nature. On the one hand, they worship nature as god but on the other hand, they make it the source of earning deteriorating it. Instead of enjoying its beauty and positively using nature, human beings try to get maximum profit from nature irrationally utilizing it which causes adverse effects in the ecosystem and the whole universe. Many of his poems focus on mundane elements of the human and the natural world.

Environmental conservation, tourism development and the dilemma of the indigenous Pygmy people in southeast Cameroon

This paper examines the implications of the paradox implicit in the conflation of Pygmies and other forest-based peoples (Bantu farmers) as a single identity group by conservationists and tourism developers. These actors share a hardened image and a single field view of the Pygmies as people of the forest that must paradoxically be evicted to give way for neoliberal development activities. The paper demonstrates that while Pygmies have diversified livelihood trajectories, prevailing prejudicial views about their non-contamination by the tourist and academic industry persists. As agents, the Pygmies are however, simultaneously maintaining their identity while engaging in performatic performances through which they stage their authenticity (reflective ethnicity) for their own benefits. To avoid conflicts between protected areas and people, and ensure co-management, conservationists and eco-tourism developers should take note of the co-constitution of man-nature relationships, the intersection between economic and ecological justice as well as inter-group power dynamics among multiple stakeholders in local communities.

Joseph Beuys’ Rediscovery of Man–Nature Relationship: A Pioneering Experience of Open Social Innovation

The emerging paradigm of sustainability represents a challenging field in terms of new technologies, market regulations, and business models. Limits of both linear industrial development and consumerist way of living have been clearly identified since the late 1960s by the first systemic studies on the effect of human activities on Earth. Many contributions from different disciplines have paved the way for an open, participated, and responsible innovation approach, which is presently triggering the transition toward a nonexploitative human development. An anticipation of this conceptual framework can be found in Joseph Beuys’ art, which can still represent a source of inspiration for innovators, entrepreneurs, economists, and community leaders. In his artistic legacy—from the six blackboards of Perugia to the 7000 Oaks of Kassel—Beuys is still asking us to transform our everyday actions, joining the collective effort toward a new evolutionary stage of humanity, founded upon a holistic vision of society and nature.

Metodología para evaluar la vulnerabilidad al cambio climático de hogares rurales de corregimientos de ladera de Cali utilizando lógica difusa

Partiendo del concepto de los sistemas complejos, dinámicos, no lineales, que integran la relación hombre-naturaleza, se propone una metodología fundamentada en la Lógica Difusa, para la determinación de la vulnerabilidad al cambio climático. Su aplicación se efectúa en los hogares rurales de los corregimientos de ladera de Cali, escogiendo como modelo el marco de los Medios de Vida Sostenibles (MVS). La información primaria se obtuvo de una encuesta entre los pobladores bajo el encabezado del concepto de los 5 Activos de los MVS: físicos, naturales, humanos, económicos-financieros y sociales-culturales-politicos. Se utilizo la caja de herramientas fuzzy de Matlab para la evaluación difusa de la capacidad de adaptación y la sensibilidad, los dos componentes de la vulnerabilidad. Para la especificacion de la sensibilidad agricola, sobre la base del cambio de aptitud de los cultivos de maíz, fríjol, plátano, yuca y café, entre 2015 y 2030, se aprovechó la disponibilidad de bases de datos como WorldClim, Ecocrop, IPCC y software como DivaGis y ArcGIS. La metodología demostró ser promisoria como alternativa a los métodos lineales para medir la vulnerabilidad frente al cambio climático y permitió responder adecuadamente las tres preguntas de investigación.
