The Swift and Secret Messenger: John Wilkins’s Mercury and the Paradoxes of Language

Abstract John Wilkins’s Mercury or the Secret and Swift Messenger: Showing How a Man May with Privacy and Speed Communicate His Thoughts to a Friend at Any Distance was first published in 1641. As a book on cryptography presenting a variety of secret means of communication at a distance it seems to have appeared at just the right time, when the biblical curse of the confusion of tongues was doubled by the curse of political confusion on the brink of the English civil war. However, the book seems to be more than just a detailed account of methods of secret writing; its topic gives the author a chance to present his views on language which he would later develop in his life’s work An Essay towards Real Character and a Philosophical Language published in 1668. The Essay had received much greater critical attention than the early pamphlet, which is usually referred to as merely a prelude to an account of his universal language project. Indeed, in the little book on cryptography, Wilkins already demonstrated his awareness of the conventional character of language and its role within the system of human interactions, as well as advertised a project of philosophical language that would enhance communication between all nations and remedy the curse of Babel. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the value of the pamphlet lies also in the insight that it gives into the seventeenth-century debates on the nature of language and into arguments which were often provided, in equal measure, by theology, Hermetic lore, mythology, literature and early modern science. Wilkins’s meticulous recording of the contradictory views and propositions on language produces a sense of methodological inconsistency that leads to ambiguities and paradoxes. However, in the medley of concepts and the collection of linguistic “curiosities” that Mercury presents, a careful reader will discern the growing mistrust of language as a means of representing reality and as a foundation of knowledge, which was one of the symptoms of the general crisis of representation leading to an epistemological shift that started in the seventeenth century.

Near the closed door, the Man in Kurta is standing with his back towards the audience, looking out a window. In the middle of the room is a worn-out carpet. The Old Man, called Bade Mian, is kneeling on a prayer rug on top of the carpet. Finishing his namaaz, he raises his hands in supplication. Beside him are his rosary, a pillow, and a jug. Behind the Old Man is the Man in Trousers, watching a goat that has been tied nearby. To one side are a small bench and an easy chair, of the kind usually found in railway waiting rooms. The Woman and The Girl are sitting on the bench. Both are dressed in worn-out clothes and look worried. Beside the Woman is a bundle; beside the Girl is a caged parrot. The Man in Coat stands off by himself. old man U watu’izzu man tasha-u wa-tudhillu man tasha. “Disgrace and honour is brought by me,” says Allah. No one reacts to him. Pause. The Man in Coat yawns and then stares into space. Pause. woman [sighs] May God have mercy upon us! No one responds. The Man in Trousers gathers some leaves and places them before the goat. old man [to the Man in Trousers] Son, do you remember the Quetta earthquake? man in trousers [with leaves in his hands, looks at the Old Man] The Quetta earthquake? Mothers threw down their children and ran out of their homes. [pause, talking to himself] There was destruction everywhere. Everywhere. [addressing those sitting near him] One basti was so completely destroyed that no one survived. man in trousers [shocked] No one survived?! old man Only one man survived. man in trousers Only one?! old man A man and a little chick. The Man in Coat, who seemed to be uninterested till now, looks at the Old Man in surprise. man in coat A little chick? old man Strange are the ways of Allah. The mighty were reduced to rubble, the tall ones collapsed. Only a little chick survived. [sighs] We have only heard of that calamity; now we are witnessing one. There’s a sudden storm out of nowhere and the town is swept away. man in coat [fearfully] So, this was a calamity. old man Certainly it was. man in trousers But why? old man Punishment for our sins. man in trousers Whose sins? Peter Drucker the storyteller: a Gestalt journey

Findings – Few readers of this journal will not be familiar with the life and ideas of Peter Drucker. He has been compared to, amongst others, Bagehot, Bastiat, Darwin, Hayek, Mendel, Mises, Newton, Schumpeter, Shaw and Tocqueville. Of many other distinctions, his first book, The End of Economic Man (May 1939), which was a political analysis centered on Hitlerism, was reviewed by Churchill.

Community, Credit, and the Prodigal Husband on the Early Modern Stage

Three early seventeenth-century “prodigal husband” comedies-- The Wise-woman of Hogsdon (Thomas Heywood, c.1604), How a Man May Choose a Good Wife from a Bad (anonymous, c. 1600–1602), and The London Prodigal (anonymous, c. 1603–1604)--reveal how the gendered nature of credit relations in early modern England and the concomitant community surveillance of the household head could cause a newly-married young man to experience his new position of patriarchal authority as loss of autonomy, and to desire nothing so much as escape.

IT MUST NOT BE PASSIVELY RECEIVED, BUT ACTUALLY AND ACTIVELY ENTERED INTO, EMBRACED, MASTERED.” JOHN HENRY NEWMAN The photograph on the cover of this issue shows the new building of the National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS). As indicated in the NINS Update at the end of this issue, the realization of this project is due to the extraordinary dedication and incredible generosity of many people over the past years. The new NINS building is truly a dream come true. Simultaneously, this new building represents a promise and portent of the future development of Newman Studies in the United States. Hopefully NINS will become a shrine to Newman—not in the notional sense of an impressive but inert memorial to a great thinker of the past—but in the real sense of a dynamic center where generations, present and future, can appreciate and appropriate Newman’s thought for their own intellectual and spiritual development. As the new NINS building marks the beginning of a new era in Newman Studies, it seems appropriate to recall what Newman said almost a century and a half ago at the Catholic University in Dublin; in an address in November 1858, to the Evening Classes about “Discipline of the Mind,” Newman pointed out that knowledge “must not be passively received, but actually and actively entered into, embraced, mastered.”1 Hopefully, the new NINS facilities will furnish both scholars and students—who are the scholars of the future—with the opportunity not only to acquire knowledge about Newman and his writings, but also to enter into, to embrace, and eventually to master the relevance of his message for today. If those who avail themselves of the intellectual resources available at NINS attain such knowledge, not only will its facilities be put to good use, but Newman will certainly be memorialized in a really significant way. CONTENTS This issue contains a variety of essays related to Newman as littérateur, as educator, as theologian, and as spiritual guide. John Rogers Friday then considers “The Role of Theology in Newman’s University and its Relevance to ContemporaryTheologians,”while John Ford explores one of Newman’s Dublin lectures on the Relationship between Theology and Science. Finally, T. L. Holtzen analyzes “Newman’s Via Media Theology of Justification.” In addition to Gary Selin’s reflections on Newman’s Anglican sermon on “The Danger of Accomplishments”and Walter E. Conn’s re-appraisal of Newman’s ongoing campaign “versus Subjectivism: Liberalism Evangelicalism and Rationalism,” there are reviews of four recent books on Newman—a sign in itself that Newman continues to attract academic attention. Along with a Newman Chronology for the benefit of readers, the bibliographical section mentions some resources that are available to Newman scholars,lists books that have been received for review,and provides a short summary of a recent Newman article that is internet-available. The “space-fillers”— which utilize otherwise unused space at the end of articles and sections—come from poems published by Newman in Verses onVarious Occasions. Limitation of 25-Gauge Vitrectomy Instrumentation in Highly Myopic Eyes

In highly myopic eyes, a 25-gauge soft-tip needle is unable to remove fluid completely during air-fluid exchange because the needle is too short to reach the back of the elongated globe. In the simulated example, we found that the standard soft-tip cannulated needle is unsuitable for use in eyes with axial lengths greater than 31 mm. Other 25-gauge instruments are similarly unable to reach the back of a long eye.

‘That Every Man May Knaw’: Reformation and Rhetoric in the Works of Sir David Lyndsay

AbstractDavid Lyndsay's writings, while often lashing the corruption of the Scottish Catholic clergy, nonetheless engage subtly with the politics of pre‐Reformation Scotland. Lyndsay's attacks on the clergy are not so much religiously motivated as based on conflict between the Scottish Church and the secular authorities. Lyndsay's writings repeatedly urge measures to reduce the Church's wealth and political influence, and shift power towards the Crown and the nobility (and, later, the Parliament). But this underlying political motive is pursued via social, moral and religious arguments, expressed with considerable rhetorical sensitivity to their effects on different audiences. Lyndsay's writing is consequently multi‐layered in voice and significance, opening in different ways for different readerships, addressing both prince and pauper, often simultaneously. The nuanced interaction, on both a formal and thematic level, of different socio‐political interests, moral values and religious debates, illustrates the complex negotiations that characterize the political culture of pre‐Reformation Scotland.

During the past 5 years field observations have been made in Slovakia on certain insects and mites which were in great part not reported formerly as “recreation” pests (Freizeitschadlinge ofWeidner). Some larvae of the genusChrysopa (Neuroptera), belonging to at least 3 distinct species, have been found to bite man in July 1961 (one record) and in June and August 1963 (6–7 records). In August 1963, several members of the familiesAnthocoridae, Miridae andCoreidae (all Heteroptera) attacked man as blood-suckers. Likewise a member of the familyNabidae (Heteroptera) was feeding on man (May 1960). Man-blood-sucking habits have been recorded for the first time for nymphs of a Homopteran (of the familyCercopidae). Among the mites, a species ofSphaerolophus (Erythraeidae) and nymphs ofAllothrombium (Trombidiidae) became annoying to man in July and August 1964 respectively.

> THE OLD QUESTION of whether or not people can to make themselves sick may be close to an answer. And the answer is probably yes. If some Yale University experiments with dogs, cats and rats are any indication of human response, the way is clear to understanding why one person regularly faints before a test and another gets sick to his stomach. Until now scientists have doubted that such involuntary activities as heart beat, blood vessel constriction and glandular secretion could be influenced by learning. They are, of course, affected by intense emotions-fear, shock or sudden anger. But could someone unconsciously learn to constrict his blood vessels and bring on a faint simply to avoid something unpleasant?
