Direct comparison of SiPM and PMT sensor performances in a large-size imaging air Cherenkov telescope

The peak photon detection efficiency (PDE) of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) can be as good or better than the PDE of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). There are experiments where the signal is measured in the presence of a strong, steady background light emission. In these, one needs to accurately evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio. Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) observe in the presence of strong noise induced by the light of the night sky. It is certainly interesting to investigate the SiPM performance under operational conditions of IACTs and to compare it with that of the PMTs.For that purpose, we built a SiPM-based detector module, which was installed in one of the imaging cameras of the two Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes in 2015. The experience gained from that module was used to design the second generation of modules of improved performance. Two such modules were installed in 2017.MAGIC is a system of two IACTs located on the Canary Island of La Palma. The mechanical structure of the MAGIC imaging cameras offers the possibility to install up to 6 additional detector modules of 7 pixels each into the open vertices of the hexagonal-shaped camera. This allows us to directly, without making any assumption, compare the performance of the PMT-based modules with that of the SiPM-based prototype modules, where SiPMs from three different manufacturers are used.

A novel energy reconstruction method for the MAGIC stereoscopic observation

We report the successful development of a novel methodology of energy reconstruction for very high energy gamma rays detected with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). This methodology, based on the machine learning algorithm Random Forest, and named RF-Erec, has been adjusted for being used with data from the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) stereo telescope system, which is a worldwide leading instrument for gamma-ray astronomy in the energy range from about 20GeV to beyond 100TeV.The RF-Erec has been evaluated using different realistic scenarios with Monte Carlo simulated data and real observations from the Crab Nebula (the standard candle for the VHE gamma-ray community). This new methodology has been validated by the MAGIC software board, and it is implemented and ready-to-use in the MAGIC Analysis and Reconstruction Software (MARS). This new methodology, validated by the MAGIC software board, has been implemented and is ready for use in the MAGIC Analysis and Reconstruction Software (MARS). We demonstrate that, in comparison to the previous energy reconstruction methodology for MAGIC data, which relied on Look-Up-Tables (LUTs- Erec) and has been utilized in over 100 scientific publications over the last decade, RF-Erec significantly enhances the energy reconstruction of gamma rays. This improvement extends the capabilities of the MAGIC telescopes.Specifically, when quantifying the energy resolution with the width of a Gaussian fitted to the error distribution (resolution-σ), the RF-Erec energy resolution-σ is 20% at 100 GeV and 11% above 1 TeV for Zenith distances (Zd) below 35 degrees, while it is 20% at 1TeV and 13% above 10TeV for Zd above 55 degrees. For a wide range of the observable energies, the improvement of energy resolution-σ, compared to LUTs-Erec, reaches roughly a factor of two, and the improvement is even larger for high Zd observations. Differently to many other works in the literature, our evaluation also considers the energy dispersion and the actual energy migration of events, where RF-Erec improves the performance of LUTs-Erec by factors of a few. The manuscript also demonstrates the importance of energy reconstruction methods with a small energy migration in order to prevent the appearance of artificial spectral features. These artifacts are particularly important at the high end of the gamma-ray spectra, where a few extra high-energy photons could have dramatic consequences for studies related to the EBL attenuation, Lorentz invariance violation, or searches for Axion-like-particles.

Highlights of the Magic Florian Goebel Telescopes in the Study of Active Galactic Nuclei

The MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) Florian Goebel telescopes are a system of two Cherenkov telescopes located on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain), at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, which have been operating in stereo mode since 2009. Their low energy threshold (down to 15 GeV) allows the investigation of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) in the very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray range with a sensitivity up to the redshift limit of the existing IACT (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes) systems. The MAGIC telescopes discovered 36 extragalactic objects emitting VHE gamma-rays and performed comprehensive studies of galaxies and their AGNs, also in a multi-wavelength (MWL) and multi-messenger (MM) context, expanding the knowledge of our Universe. Here, we report on the highlights achieved by the MAGIC collaboration since the beginning of their operations.

Grimoire1 of the MAGIC telescopes

The MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes are a system of two Cherenkov telescopes located on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain), at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, and operating in stereo mode since 2009. Their design and dedicated trigger system allows to reach an energy threshold of 50 GeV, which can be lowered to 15 GeV when using the Sum-Trigger-II. This made it possible to observe sources at the limit of detection for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (z∼1) and to deeply study the Geminga pulsar tail emission. A strategy of alert follow-ups from other facilities and the fast repositioning of the telescopes made possible the detection of the first neutrino associated with a blazar and of gamma-ray bursts in the very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray band, respectively. Moreover, the discovery of GRB190114C allowed a test of general relativity through the study of the Lorentz Invariant Violation. Recently MAGIC observed the first VHE gamma-ray nova, RS Ophiuchi, revealing that protons are accelerated to hundreds of gigaelectronvolts in the nova shock. In this talk we will go through the MAGIC recent highlights in the study of galactic and extragalactic sources, spanning from multimessenger astronomy to astroparticle and fundamental physics.

Proton synchrotron, an explanation for possible extended VHE gamma-ray activity of TXS 0506+056 in 2017

TXS $0506+056$, source of the extreme energy neutrino event, IceCube-170922A, has an interesting environment to study the lepto-hadronic emissions. The Fermi-LAT detector reported high energy (HE) $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray flare between 100 MeV and 100 GeV starting from 15 September 2017 from this source. Several follow-ups to trace the very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray counterparts around the IceCube-170922A resulted in no success around 22 September 2022. Only after 28 September, the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes observed the first VHE gamma rays from the blazar above 100 GeV. The $\ensuremath{\sim}41\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{h}$ survey resulted in VHE $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray activity until 31 October 2017, nearly 45 days after the HE flare. Here we propose the extended GeV $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays can be explained by taking two production channels, electron synchrotron self Compton and proton synchrotron for HE and VHE emissions, respectively. The 45 days of VHE emission from the peak of the HE flare can be explained with ${L}_{p}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\simeq}{10}^{47}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{erg}/\mathrm{sec}$ in the jet frame and magnetic field of 2.4 G, consistent with the ${\mathrm{L}}_{\mathrm{Edd}}$ for a blackhole mass $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{9}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{M}}_{\ensuremath{\bigodot}}$. With the same luminosity of accelerated protons, we explained the observed neutrino flux with proton-varying-ambient interaction.

Correcting MAGIC Telescope data taken under non-optimal atmospheric conditions with an elastic LIDAR

The Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes are a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). IACTs make calorimetric use of the Earth’s atmosphere, which allows them to reach large effective areas, but also makes them strongly dependent on the quality of the atmosphere at the time of the observations. Dust intrusions or clouds obscuring the observed Cherenkov light can then lead to a wrong reconstruction of the gamma-ray data. In order to mitigate this problem, the MPP group built and has been operating a single wavelength elastic LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) system to perform real time ranged-resolved measurements of the aerosol transmission. This information is then used to quantify the quality of the telescope data, as well as to correct the data taken under suboptimal aerosol conditions. In this talk, the correction of atmospherically impaired IACT data will be described and the first systematic evaluation of the correction capabilities of the LIDAR system will be presented. The results describe the impact of the LIDAR corrections for a variety of atmospheric and observational conditions, and therefore contribute to a better understanding of the telescope’s performance and related systematic uncertainties.

Galactic center gamma-ray production by cosmic rays from stellar winds and Sgr A East

Context. The High Energy Stereoscopic System, the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov Telescope, and the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System have observed diffuse gamma-ray emission strongly correlated with the central molecular zone in the Galactic center. The most accepted scenario to generate this emission is via a hadronic interaction between cosmic rays (CRs) and ambient gas, where CRs are accelerated from a central and continuous source of 1 PeV protons. Aims. We explore the influence of the three-dimensional (3D) shape of the central molecular zone on the indirect observation of the CR energy density via gamma-ray detection. Methods. We simulated synthetic gamma-ray maps using a CR diffusion model with spherical injection, one isotropic diffusion coefficient, no advection, and mono-energetic particles of 1 PeV. Also, we used two different 3D gas distributions considering the observed gas column density, both with and without an inner cavity. Results. We find that when using a persistent CR source, a disk-like gas distribution is needed to reproduce the existing CR indirect observations. This is in agreement with the continuous gas distribution implied by some dynamical models and studies based on the comparison of emission and absorption molecular lines. However, it contradicts several models of the central molecular zone, which imply that this structure has a significant inner cavity. This tension can be reconciled by an additional, impulsive CR injection. Conclusions. If the central molecular zone has a cavity, a composite CR population, coming from the stellar winds of the Wolf-Rayet stars in the central 0.5 pc and the supernova Sgr A East, produces a good match to the observed gamma-ray morphology in the Galactic center.

The Stereoscopic Analog Trigger of the MAGIC Telescopes

The current generation of ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) operate in the very-high-energy (VHE) domain from ~100 GeV to ~100 TeV. They use electronic digital trigger systems to discern the Cherenkov light flashes emitted by extensive air showers (EASs), from the overwhelming light of the night sky (LoNS) background. Near the telescope energy threshold, the number of emitted Cherenkov photons by gamma-ray-induced EASs is comparable to the fluctuations of the LoNS and the photon distribution at the Cherenkov-imaging camera plane becomes patchy. This results in a severe loss of effectiveness of the digital triggers based on combinatorial logic of thresholded signals. A stereoscopic analog trigger system has been developed for improving the detection capabilities of the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes at the lowest energies. It is based on the analog sum of the photosensor electrical signals. In this article, the architectural design, technical performances, and configuration of this stereoscopic analog trigger, dubbed “Sum-Trigger-II,” are described.

Excluding possible sites of high-energy emission in 3C 84

ABSTRACT The FR-I galaxy 3C 84, that is identified with the misaligned blazar NGC 1275, is well known as one of the very few radio galaxies emitting gamma-rays in the TeV range. Yet, the gamma-ray emission region cannot be pinpointed and the responsible mechanisms are still unclear. We calculate the optical absorption depth of high-energy photons in the broad-line region of 3C 84 depending on their energy and distance to the central black hole. Based on these calculations, a lower limit on the distance of the emission region from the central black hole can be derived. These lower limits are estimated for two broad-line region geometries (shell and ring) and two states of the source, the low state in 2016 October–December and a flare state in 2017 January. For the shell geometry, we can place the emission region outside the Ly α radius. For the ring geometry and the low flux activity, the minimal distance between the black hole, and the gamma-ray emission region is close to the Ly α radius. In the case of the flaring state (ring geometry), the results are not conclusive. Our results exclude the region near the central black hole as the origin of the gamma-rays detected by Fermi–LAT and Major Atmospheric Gamma-Ray Imaging Cherenkov. With these findings, we can constrain the theoretical models of acceleration mechanisms and compare the possible emission region to the source’s morphology resolved by radio images from the Very Long Baseline Array.

Description of Atypical Bursts Seen Slightly Off-axis

Abstract The detection of gravitational waves together with their electromagnetic counterpart, in the gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A, marked a new era of multi-messenger astronomy. Several theoretical models have been proposed to explain the atypical behavior of this event. Recently, it was shown th0at the multiwavelength afterglow of GRB 170817A was consistent with a synchrotron forward-shock model when the outflow was viewed off-axis, decelerated in a uniform medium and parameterized through a power-law velocity distribution. Motivated by the upper limits on the very high-energy emission, and the stratified medium in the close vicinity of a binary neutron star merger proposed to explain the gamma-ray flux in the short GRB 150101B, we extend the mechanism proposed to explain GRB 170817A to a more general scenario deriving the synchrotron self-Compton and synchrotron forward-shock model when the off-axis outflow is decelerated in a uniform and stratified circumburst density. As particular cases, we show that the delayed and long-lasting afterglow emission observed in GRB 080503, GRB 140903A, GRB 150101B, and GRB 160821B could be interpreted by a scenario similar to the one used to describe GRB 170817A. In addition, we show that the proposed scenario agrees with the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov telescope, Fermi-Large Area Telescope, and High Energy Stereoscopic System upper limits on gamma-ray emission from GRB 160821B and GRB 170817A.

The Great Markarian 421 Flare of 2010 February: Multiwavelength Variability and Correlation Studies

Abstract We report on variability and correlation studies using multiwavelength observations of the blazar Mrk 421 during the month of 2010 February, when an extraordinary flare reaching a level of ∼27 Crab Units above 1 TeV was measured in very high energy (VHE) γ-rays with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) observatory. This is the highest flux state for Mrk 421 ever observed in VHE γ-rays. Data are analyzed from a coordinated campaign across multiple instruments, including VHE γ-ray (VERITAS, Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov), high-energy γ-ray (Fermi-LAT), X-ray (Swift, Rossi X-ray Timing Experiment, MAXI), optical (including the GASP-WEBT collaboration and polarization data), and radio (Metsähovi, Owens Valley Radio Observatory, University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory). Light curves are produced spanning multiple days before and after the peak of the VHE flare, including over several flare “decline” epochs. The main flare statistics allow 2 minute time bins to be constructed in both the VHE and optical bands enabling a cross-correlation analysis that shows evidence for an optical lag of ∼25–55 minutes, the first time-lagged correlation between these bands reported on such short timescales. Limits on the Doppler factor (δ ≳ 33) and the size of the emission region ( ) are obtained from the fast variability observed by VERITAS during the main flare. Analysis of 10 minute binned VHE and X-ray data over the decline epochs shows an extraordinary range of behavior in the flux–flux relationship, from linear to quadratic to lack of correlation to anticorrelation. Taken together, these detailed observations of an unprecedented flare seen in Mrk 421 are difficult to explain with the classic single-zone synchrotron self-Compton model.

Statistics of VHE γ-rays in temporal association with radio giant pulses from the Crab pulsar

Aims. The aim of this study is to search for evidence of a common emission engine between radio giant pulses (GPs) and very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) γ-rays from the Crab pulsar. Methods. We performed 16 h of simultaneous observations of the Crab pulsar at 1.4 GHz with the Effelsberg radio telescope and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), and at energies above 60 GeV we used the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes. We searched for a statistical correlation between the radio and VHE γ-ray emission with search windows of different lengths and different time lags to the arrival times of a radio GP. A dedicated search for an enhancement in the number of VHE γ-rays correlated with the occurrence of radio GPs was carried out separately for the P1 and P2 phase ranges, respectively. Results. In the radio data sample, 99444 radio GPs were detected. We find no significant correlation between the GPs and VHE photons in any of the search windows. Depending on phase cuts and the chosen search windows, we find upper limits at a 95% confidence level on an increase in VHE γ-ray events correlated with radio GPs between 7% and 61% of the average Crab pulsar VHE flux for the P1 and P2 phase ranges, respectively. This puts upper limits on the flux increase during a radio GP between 12% and 2900% of the pulsed VHE flux, depending on the search window duration and phase cuts. This is the most stringent upper limit on a correlation between γ-ray emission and radio GPs reported so far.

The Blazar TXS 0506+056 Associated with a High-energy Neutrino: Insights into Extragalactic Jets and Cosmic-Ray Acceleration

Abstract A neutrino with energy ∼290 TeV, IceCube-170922A, was detected in coincidence with the BL Lac object TXS 0506+056 during enhanced gamma-ray activity, with chance coincidence being rejected at ∼3σ level. We monitored the object in the very-high-energy (VHE) band with the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes for ∼41 hr from 1.3 to 40.4 days after the neutrino detection. Day-timescale variability is clearly resolved. We interpret the quasi-simultaneous neutrino and broadband electromagnetic observations with a novel one-zone lepto-hadronic model, based on interactions of electrons and protons co-accelerated in the jet with external photons originating from a slow-moving plasma sheath surrounding the faster jet spine. We can reproduce the multiwavelength spectra of TXS 0506+056 with neutrino rate and energy compatible with IceCube-170922A, and with plausible values for the jet power of . The steep spectrum observed by MAGIC is concordant with internal γγ absorption above ∼100 GeV entailed by photohadronic production of a ∼290 TeV neutrino, corroborating a genuine connection between the multi-messenger signals. In contrast to previous predictions of predominantly hadronic emission from neutrino sources, the gamma-rays can be mostly ascribed to inverse Compton upscattering of external photons by accelerated electrons. The X-ray and VHE bands provide crucial constraints on the emission from both accelerated electrons and protons. We infer that the maximum energy of protons in the jet comoving frame can be in the range ∼1014 – 1018 eV.

Constraining Lorentz Invariance Violation Using the Crab Pulsar Emission Observed up to TeV Energies by MAGIC

Abstract Spontaneous breaking of Lorentz symmetry at energies on the order of the Planck energy or lower is predicted by many quantum gravity theories, implying non-trivial dispersion relations for the photon in vacuum. Consequently, gamma-rays of different energies, emitted simultaneously from astrophysical sources, could accumulate measurable differences in their time of flight until they reach the Earth. Such tests have been carried out in the past using fast variations of gamma-ray flux from pulsars, and more recently from active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursts. We present new constraints studying the gamma-ray emission of the galactic Crab Pulsar, recently observed up to TeV energies by the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) collaboration. A profile likelihood analysis of pulsar events reconstructed for energies above 400 GeV finds no significant variation in arrival time as their energy increases. Ninety-five percent CL limits are obtained on the effective Lorentz invariance violating energy scale at the level of ( ) for a linear, and ( ) for a quadratic scenario, for the subluminal and the superluminal cases, respectively. A substantial part of this study is dedicated to calibration of the test statistic, with respect to bias and coverage properties. Moreover, the limits take into account systematic uncertainties, which are found to worsen the statistical limits by about 36%–42%. Our constraints would have been much more stringent if the intrinsic pulse shape of the pulsar between 200 GeV and 400 GeV was understood in sufficient detail and allowed inclusion of events well below 400 GeV.

Search for High Energy emission from GRBs with MAGIC

AbstractGamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most violent explosions in the Universe, releasing a huge amount of energy in few seconds. While our understanding of the prompt and the afterglow phases has increased with Swift and Fermi, we have very few information about their High Energy (HE, E ≲ 100) emission components. This requires a ground-based experiment able to perform fast follow-up with enough sensitivity above ~ 50 GeV. The MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes have been designed to perform fast follow-up on GRBs thanks to fast slewing movement and low energy threshold (~ 50 GeV). Since the beginning of the operations, MAGIC followed-up 89 GRBs in good observational conditions. In this contribution the MAGIC GRBs follow-up campaign and the results which could be obtained by detecting HE and Very High Energy (VHE, E ≳ 100 GeV) γ-rays from GRBs will be reviewed.

Peculiar emission from the new VHE gamma-ray source H1722+119

The BL Lac object H1722+119 was observed in the very high energy band (VHE, E > 100 GeV) by the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes (Aleksić et al. 2016a, b)) between 2013 May 17 and 22, following a state of high activity in the optical band measured by the KVA (Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien) telescope. Optical high states are often used to trigger MAGIC observations, which result in the VHE γ-ray signal detection (see e.g. Aleksić et al. 2015, Ahnen et al. 2016 and references therein).

The Topo-trigger: a new concept of stereo trigger system for imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes

Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) such as the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes endeavor to reach the lowest possible energy threshold. In doing so the trigger system is a key element. Reducing the trigger threshold is hampered by the rapid increase of accidental triggers generated by ambient light (the so-called Night Sky Background NSB). In this paper we present a topological trigger, dubbed Topo-trigger, which rejects events on the basis of their relative orientation in the telescope cameras. We have simulated and tested the trigger selection algorithm in the MAGIC telescopes. The algorithm was tested using MonteCarlo simulations and shows a rejection of 85% of the accidental stereo triggers while preserving 99% of the gamma rays. A full implementation of this trigger system would achieve an increase in collection area between 10 and 20% at the energy threshold. The analysis energy threshold of the instrument is expected to decrease by ∼ 8%. The selection algorithm was tested on real MAGIC data taken with the current trigger configuration and no γ-like events were found to be lost.

Investigating the peculiar emission from the new VHE gamma-ray source H1722+119

The MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes observed the BL Lac object H1722+119 (redshift unknown) for six consecutive nights between 2013 May 17 and 22, for a total of 12.5 h. The observations were triggered by high activity in the optical band measured by the KVA (Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien) telescope. The source was for the first time detected in the very high energy (VHE, $E > 100$ GeV) $\gamma$-ray band with a statistical significance of 5.9 $\sigma$. The integral flux above 150 GeV is estimated to be $(2.0\pm 0.5)$ per cent of the Crab Nebula flux. We used contemporaneous high energy (HE, 100 MeV $ < E < 100$ GeV) $\gamma$-ray observations from Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) to estimate the redshift of the source. Within the framework of the current extragalactic background light models, we estimate the redshift to be $z = 0.34 \pm 0.15$. Additionally, we used contemporaneous X-ray to radio data collected by the instruments on board the Swift satellite, the KVA, and the OVRO (Owens Valley Radio Observatory) telescope to study multifrequency characteristics of the source. We found no significant temporal variability of the flux in the HE and VHE bands. The flux in the optical and radio wavebands, on the other hand, did vary with different patterns. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of H1722+119 shows surprising behaviour in the $\sim 3\times10^{14} - 10^{18}$ Hz frequency range. It can be modelled using an inhomogeneous helical jet synchrotron self-Compton model.

The WEBT campaign on the BL Lac object PG 1553+113 in 2013. An analysis of the enigmatic synchrotron emission

A multifrequency campaign on the BL Lac object PG 1553+113 was organized by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) in 2013 April-August, involving 19 optical, two near-IR, and three radio telescopes. The aim was to study the source behaviour at low energies during and around the high-energy observations by the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes in April-July. We also analyse the UV and X-ray data acquired by the Swift and XMM-Newton satellites in the same period. The WEBT and satellite observations allow us to detail the synchrotron emission bump in the source spectral energy distribution (SED). In the optical we found a general bluer-when-brighter trend. The X-ray spectrum remained stable during 2013, but a comparison with previous observations suggests that it becomes harder when the X-ray flux increases. The long XMM-Newton exposure reveals a curved X-ray spectrum. In the SED, the XMM-Newton data show a hard near-UV spectrum, while Swift data display a softer shape that is confirmed by previous HST-COS and IUE observations. Polynomial fits to the optical-X-ray SED show that the synchrotron peak likely lies in the 4-30 eV energy range, with a general shift towards higher frequencies for increasing X-ray brightness. However, the UV and X-ray spectra do not connect smoothly. Possible interpretations include: i) orientation effects, ii) additional absorption, iii) multiple emission components, and iv) a peculiar energy distribution of relativistic electrons. We discuss the first possibility in terms of an inhomogeneous helical jet model.

Black hole physics. Black hole lightning due to particle acceleration at subhorizon scales.

Supermassive black holes with masses of millions to billions of solar masses are commonly found in the centers of galaxies. Astronomers seek to image jet formation using radio interferometry but still suffer from insufficient angular resolution. An alternative method to resolve small structures is to measure the time variability of their emission. Here we report on gamma-ray observations of the radio galaxy IC 310 obtained with the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes, revealing variability with doubling time scales faster than 4.8 min. Causality constrains the size of the emission region to be smaller than 20% of the gravitational radius of its central black hole. We suggest that the emission is associated with pulsar-like particle acceleration by the electric field across a magnetospheric gap at the base of the radio jet.
