Descriptive study on the overload of the main caregiver of cancer patients with tumour asthenia in Salamanca.

The incidence of oncology patients is increasing due to the ageing of the population and advances in research leading to early diagnoses. This has resulted in an increase in the care required for patients at all stages of their illness. To describe the current situation of the overload of informal caregivers of cancer patients with tumour asthenia belonging to the Medical Oncology Service of the University Health Care Complex of Salamanca and the Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital de los Montalvos, we employed the following. This is a cross-sectional descriptive observational study conducted at the Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Salamanca and the Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital de los Montalvos from February to May 2023. The study involved 75 informal caregivers of oncology patients with tumour asthenia. Data was collected through interviews, which included sociodemographic information and measurement scales. The study employed the Barthel Scale, PERFORM questionnaire, and Reduced Zarit Caregiver Overload Scale to assess the informal caregivers' ability to care for cancer patients with tumour asthenia. Of the caregivers, 58.7% were female, and the mean age was 60.0 years (± 14.10). Over half (50.7%) of the caregivers experienced high levels of overload, making it impossible to care for the patient. Among patients with tumour asthenia, 37.3% were totally dependent, and 8.0% were moderately dependent. Of these caregivers, 58.7% had no prior caregiving experience, 80.7% had no training, and 77.3% never received help in caring for the patient. In the Medical Oncology service of the Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Salamanca (CAUSA) and the Palliative Care Unit of the Hospital de los Montalvos, over one third of caregivers of oncology patients with tumour asthenia experienced caregiver overload. Variables such as the patient's age, the caregiver's age, the number of care hours, and the willingness to seek help can influence the perception of overload. This can worsen the effective care of the patient. It is important to consider these factors when providing care.

Characteristics of temper tantrums in 1-6-year-old children and impact on caregivers.

Temper tantrums are common behavioral difficulties in children. Although they are generally considered a normal part of development, certain characteristics-such as aggression, prolonged duration, and frequent occurrences-have been linked to psychological issues and can negatively impact both the child and their caregivers. To study the prevalence and characteristics of temper tantrums in children aged 1-6 years at daycare and in kindergarten in Thailand as well as the impact of problematic and non-problematic tantrums on their caregivers' emotional well-being. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 2021. The main caregivers of the participants completed self-reported questionnaires that collected their demographic information and the temper tantrum characteristics and impacts on the caregivers' emotions. Data from 211 children were included in this study. The mean child age was 4.4 ± 1.2 years. Two hundred and one (95.3%) parents reported that their children had at least one tantrum behavior, of which verbal were the most common (94.5%). One hundred and eleven (55.2%) children had tantrums defined as problematic: exhibiting aggressive physical behavior, duration >15 min, frequency > 3 days/week. The mean emotional burden scores of the children's problematic and non-problematic temper tantrums on their parents were 23.3 ± 8.4 and 17.7 ± 8.3 (maximum, 55; p = 0.001), respectively, showing a statistically significant difference. Tantrums are common in children aged 1-6 years, but their expression varies. Problematic tantrums were reported for approximately half of the children and significantly impacted their caregivers' emotions. Therefore, children with problematic tantrums and their families should receive assistance.

Adaptive language strategies of an older sibling in bilingual German-Russian acquisition: A case study

Abstract In the beginning stages of language acquisition, children primarily learn language from their parents or main caregivers. Studies have shown that adults use a specific way of speaking when talking to young children, called child-directed speech (CDS). This type of speech has distinct characteristics across different aspects of language. Additionally, older siblings also communicate with their younger brothers and sisters. Studies suggest that even three- and four-year-olds change how they talk when interacting with younger children, like their siblings. Studies have shown that children’s speech patterns resemble those of adults, whether they grow up in monolingual or bilingual environments. However, research on bilingual language acquisition often focuses on how siblings influence the language development of younger children. In this study, we explore how children adapt their language in bilingual settings and focus on the older sibling. Specifically, we compare the speech of an older sibling, who speaks both German and Russian, when talking to their younger sibling and when talking to their parents. The study revealed the following: The girl demonstrated linguistic adaptations typical of child-directed speech in both Russian and German when interacting with her younger brother. However, these adaptations were not consistent across all linguistic categories analyzed, revealing some differences between the two languages. Notably, Katharina did not exhibit more child-directed speech features in one language over the other. Adaptive behavior was present in both Russian and German in categories such as MLU, MLU5, question constructions, and imperatives. In Russian, adaptation was also evident in coordinate constructions but not subordinate constructions, while the opposite pattern was observed in German.

The role and perception of the caregiver in a specialized pediatric palliative care center in medicine preparation and administration: a survey study

BackgroundIn pediatric palliative care, the main caregiver is primarily responsible for managing pharmaceutical therapies. Few data are available regarding the influence of this burden on quality of life in terms of time, concerns as well as a considerable risk of administration errors and adverse effects. This study aims to investigate how caregivers prepared and administrated medication, including errors and associated expectations, to identify improvement interventions.MethodsBetween October 2022 and March 2023, a descriptive single-center survey study was carried out in the tertiary care pediatric palliative center of the Padova University Hospital. Participants were the caregivers of the patients followed by our center up to 23 years old, receiving at least one drug daily and who cannot self-administer their therapy. The questionnaire consisted of 18 multiple-choice and semi-closed questions, grouped into 4 main topics: therapy preparation, therapy administration, administration errors and therapy assessment.ResultsA total of 100 caregivers responded to the survey. Mothers represented the main caregiver (91%). The prevalence of polypharmacy was 67% across the patients. 52% of caregivers handled prescriptions at least three times per day and for 32% it took to prepare them more than 5 min each time. Only 59% reported to have been trained for preparing and administrating drugs. 14% reported having made at least a drug administration error due to the tiredness or the complexity of therapeutic regimens in the preceding three months. Nearly one caregiver out of three felt their child was using too many drugs. 73% positively welcomed the possibility of having clinical pharmacist-led counseling.ConclusionsMany caregivers of pediatric palliative care patients frequently have trouble planning, preparing and delivering pharmacological therapy to their children. Attempting to simplify medication regimens, choosing formulations that are simpler to administer and measure, investing in improved caregiver training, talking about therapies with carers, and involving clinical pharmacists to clarify their doubts could be all potential strategies to improve this condition and reduce their burden.

Shifting Domestic Roles In The Household And Their Influence On Children's Education In Matang Sagoe Village Peusangan Sub-District Bireuen District

The shift in domestic roles in Matang Sagoe indicates a shift towards a more equal division of responsibilities between husband and wife. This has various impacts on children's education . Some Matang Sagoe people still hold fast to traditional values, where mothers are expected to remain the main caregivers and managers of the household, while fathers are the main breadwinners. This study uses a qualitative method with a field research approach. Data collection techniques consist of in-depth interviews, participatory observation and documentation. The results of the study show that 1). The form of shifting domestic roles in households on children's education in Matang Sagoe Village Peusangan Sub-District Bireuen District is from traditional roles to more flexible roles, working mothers and a more equal division of tasks. 2). The influence of shifting domestic roles in households on children's education in Matang Sagoe Village Peusangan Sub-District Bireuen District is on increasing father involvement in children's education, the role of working mothers and their influence, higher child independence and the negative influence of limited time. 3). Systematic review of burden&quality of life in caregivers of children with schizophrenia (SyREN)

Abstract Background Schizophrenia is a chronic, disabling disorder that affects 23.6 million people worldwide, with patients often needing extensive assistance and care. Main caregivers are frequently family members who may present a reduced quality of life (QoL) due to the high-level burden of care. Literature mostly focuses on the burden caused by other mental disorders or by schizophrenia in both the adult and child population. We aim to assess the burden and QoL in caregivers of children and adolescents with schizophrenia. Methods We conducted a Systematic Review of articles published between 2013 and 2023 on MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, APA PsycARTICLES, CINAHL. We included studies in which a validated instrument was used to measure the burden of caregiving and QoL for adult caregivers of children and adolescent schizophrenic patients. The results were reported following the PRISMA guidelines. Results We identified 1388 studies. We removed 610 duplicates. After screening 788 studies on title and abstract and 52 for full-text, we included one cross-sectional study in China based on the STROBE Checklist. Significant correlations between burden of care and schizophrenia severity, children’s age, period of care, education, sex, residence, and income were reported. Additionally, we screened 7 qualitative studies. Social stigma and struggle were the most frequently reported feelings, and financial burden was the most common external factor associated with a worse quality of life. Conclusions This review revealed a significant research gap in this field. This lack of focused research underscores the urgent need for targeted investigations into the experiences of caregivers of children and adolescents with schizophrenia. Addressing these knowledge gaps will improve support systems and interventions tailored to the unique needs of this population, such as disease-specific advisory, mental health services, social and financial support, and self-help groups. Key messages • We identified a research gap for burden and quality of life in informal caregivers of children with schizophrenia. Education, sex and income of caregivers relate to the burden of care. • Further research is needed to develop strategies to improve support systems and interventions tailored to the unique needs of this population.

The impact of parenthood on well-being: a qualitative study of mothers’ and fathers’ perceptions across European countries

Abstract Background Parenthood significantly impacts the well-being of mothers and fathers. Yet, their experiences may differ according to societal roles and expectations. Parenthood can bring joy and fulfillment, but also emotional strain, particularly for mothers. Fathers’ involvement in caregiving has been recognized as crucial for family well-being, but studies on its health impact remain scarce. This study analyzed mothers’ and fathers’ perceptions of how parenthood affected their personal and professional well-being. Methods We conducted 30 semi-structured interviews with Portuguese mothers and fathers living in Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain, and Italy. Thematic content analysis was performed to analyze the interviews. Results After becoming parents, male interviewees reported career benefits such as higher pay and career growth due to increased workload, while female interviewees reported greater family overload that spilled over into their professional lives. In Portugal, women faced work-life conflict as they felt more competent than their male partners in providing care and maintained their full-time paid work. In countries like Germany and Spain, women assumed the role of main caregivers but reduced their work commitments, either by working fewer hours or leaving the workforce. Self-reported health declined for both after parenthood, but differently. Some fathers engaged in less healthy behaviors, resulting in weight gain. In contrast, mothers, particularly in Portugal, were more prone to express emotions such as guilt, pressure, and anxiety due to role conflicts as workers, mothers, and wives. Conclusions Traditional gender norms still shape parental roles in work and family life, differently affecting women’s and men’s well-being. To address gender inequalities in parenthood, equal access to supportive measures such as shared parental leave is needed, as well as flexible working arrangements and childcare services.

On Being a Good Worker, a Good Mother, a Good Carer: Women Journalists, Motherhood, and Caregiving

ABSTRACT This paper examines the relationship between journalism, caregiving, and family-building, focusing on women journalists in Portugal. Drawing on a critical thematic analysis of thirty interviews, it explores an analytic framework that includes cultural, structural, and agentic dimensions of career limitations, organised in three overarching themes. The first examines how women journalists experience work constraints stemming from traditional cultural ideals where women are still the main caregivers and work cultures that perpetuate a male perspective on professional routines. The second theme explores the mismatch between work and care responsibilities that arises from prevailing family structures and work processes. The third theme centres on how women journalists respond to constraints by making choices and developing strategies. Journalists’ reflexive deliberations about career decisions, employment conditions, family life and cultural assumptions underpinning parenthood demonstrate the complex interrelationship between cultural and working structures, organisational materiality, and agency. Together, these dimensions replicate patterns that make journalism more inhospitable for women. A central point in this research is that while a systemic gender bias exists beyond the sector, workplace inequalities are particularly consequential for journalism and democracy.

Intensity of care and the health status of caregivers to elderly rural South Africans.

Informal caregivers play an indispensable role in and are often the sole source of care for older adults in low and middle-income settings worldwide. Intensive informal care predicts mortality and morbidity among caregivers in higher-income settings. However, there is limited evidence from poorer settings, including Africa countries, where caregiving is shared widely, including across generations. We therefore investigated caregivers' health status in rural South Africa. We conducted quantitative interviews with all household members and all non-household caregivers aged ≥12 (n=1012) of 106 older adults in rural Mpumalanga, South Africa. We used multivariable regression with care-recipient random intercepts to assess the relationships between four caregiving characteristics and both self-reported chronic conditions and self-reported health status, considering how caregiver age moderated each association. Over half of all caregivers reported at least one chronic health condition, despite half being aged under 40. Caregivers self-reporting the worst health status provided high hours of care. However, caregivers' health status was not significantly associated with weekly care quantity or history of caring. Those aged ≥40 who reported being a main caregiver had 52% increased odds of reporting poorer health compared to other same-aged carers (95% confidence interval: 0.99, 2.35), while having more chronic conditions was associated with being expected to act as a sole caregiver more often among caregivers aged ≤39. Greater caring responsibilities for older adults were not consistently associated with caregivers' health in a setting where poor health is common, and caregiving is spread widely. Longitudinal data is necessary to unpack possible explanations of these findings, and to determine whether intensive caregiving speeds downward health trajectories for carers.

Experiences and the psychosocial situation of parental caregivers of children with spinal muscular atrophy against the background of new treatment options: a qualitative interview study

BackgroundSpinal muscular atrophy is a rare neurodegenerative disorder in children which leads untreated to muscle wasting, respiratory impairments, and a shortened life expectancy. Parents as primary caregivers are often physically and psychologically burdened. In recent years, new and promising treatment options have been approved, but it remains unclear if they have an impact on the psychosocial situation of affected families.ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to explore the views and experiences of parents as informal caregivers of children with SMA in the course of the disease against the background of new treatment options (Spinraza® or Zolgensma®).MethodsWe conducted qualitative interviews with 27 parents of children with SMA treated with Spinraza® and Zolgensma® from April to September 2020. The analysis was done using thematic analysis and reported according to the COREQ criteria.ResultsThe data analysis resulted in three main themes: a) caregiver burden and negative consequences for families, b) resources and protective aspects, c) psychosocial care needs. The results are discussed against the background of new treatment options and previous models of supportive care needs. Parental caregivers of affected children face multiple burdens in different stages of the child’s disease progression.ConclusionAlthough new treatment options for SMA showed observable effects for most parents, the main caregiver burden and reported symptoms were attributable to the overburdening care tasks. To unburden families, more screening for unmet needs, family-centered help services, professional caregivers, childcare, and sufficient financial support are needed.

Early Cues from Parent-Child Interaction: Comparisons Among Young Children Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Developmental Language Disorder and Children not Diagnosed with a Disability.

Over the past ten years, there has been a significant improvement in the sensibility and specificity of the earlier diagnosis of ASD. However, parenting traits were relatively explored among children with different disabilities. We aimed to clarify the characteristics of parent-child interaction among children with ASD and DLD, compared with children not diagnosed with a disability. The study recruited 280 children aged 1.5-3.9 years (30 children with ASD, 48 children with DLD, and 202 TD children) and their primary caregivers. Parent-child interaction was measured based on video recordings and observation. One-way ANOVA was used for the comparison of IRS-C scores among the three groups, and the t-test was used for pairwise comparisons; effect size was also calculated. Children's age and sex were further considered as grouping category in our analyses. All comparison models were adjusted by demographic background (i.e. child age and sex, sibling, main caregiver, mother education, and family annual income). Children with ASD showed the lowest level of general social competence compared to children with DLD (d = 1.298, P < 0.001) and TD group (d = 1.833, P < 0.001). Children with DLD showed less responsiveness (d = 0.780, P < 0.001) and less empathy (d = 0.706, P < 0.001) than TD children. Caregivers of children with ASD also showed the lowest level of parenting attributes relative to caregivers of children with DLD (d = 0.978, P < 0.001) and caregivers of TD children (d = 0.860, P < 0.001). The child- and parent-related traits also varied by child age and sex. We posit that parent-child interaction necessitates greater attention with respect to early screening and identification.

Stress and Coping Behavior Exhibited by Family Members Toward Long-Term Care Facility Residents While Hospitalized.

With the increase in the elderly population, institution-based care has become another option for elderly people. In Changhua, Taiwan, the number of long-term institutions has doubled in the past decade, and more families are choosing to send their elders to institutions for care. However, there is stress induced by having to care for these elders when they come back to their family members when hospitalized. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the stress and coping behaviors of family members in regard to hospitalized long-term care facility residents and identify relevant factors that affect and predict the stress and coping behaviors exhibited by these family members. In this study, a quantitative and cross-sectional survey was conducted using the convenience-sampling method; family members of long-term care facility residents hospitalized in a regional hospital in central Taiwan were selected as the research participants and a total of 162 family members were admitted. The data were collected in the form of questionnaires including basic information and data on the stress and coping behaviors of the family members. The data were collected and coded by using SPSS 22.0 to perform descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The standard average score of total stress for family members was 57.03 points, which corresponds to a moderate level. The four perceptions of stress by family members were, in order, physiological, life, psychological, and economic. Furthermore, family income, work status, and the relationship between residents of the family members and physiological, psychological, and economic factors had predictive power for their problem-oriented coping behaviors, with an explanatory power of 59.6%. Life aspects, gender, marital status, and the number of hospitalizations in half a year had significant predictive power for the family members' emotion-oriented coping behaviors, with an explanatory power of 19.0%. The family members had high levels of stress, especially physical stress, and the total scores of stress perception were higher for those who were younger than 39 years old and had no rotating family members. Additionally, the coping behavior of the main caregiver was mainly problem-oriented. The results of this study may serve as a reference that can help nursing staff in clinical or long-term care facilities to provide or develop effective and individualized services for family members of facility residents.

A Review of Official Documents and Literature on the Forgotten Victims of Parental Incarceration in South Africa

This article is a literature synthesis of the living conditions of black children after their parent's imprisonment. In Africa, the prison population currently stands at 1,194,497, while in South Africa, 147,922 people were being held in correctional facilities as of January 2021. Parental incarceration has affected all children, regardless of race, age, or cultural background. An increasing amount of research indicates that children with incarcerated parents are prone to internalized behaviors such as depression, anxiety, and withdrawal, as well as externalized behaviors including criminality and substance use. They may also experience cognitive delays, academic struggles, and insecure attachments in their relationships with both their imprisoned parents and primary caregivers. The term "caregiver" denotes the individual who assumes the role of the child's main caregiver while the parents are incarcerated. It is important to note that the literature focusing on child-headed households in South African informal settlements and townships may be limited. This paper is a narrative synthesis of the literature review and uses secondary sources.

Social determinants of health and youth chronic pain

ObjectivesTo identify the relationships between social determinants of health (SDOH) and chronic pain among U.S. youth (referring to children and adolescents). MethodsData including a national sample of U.S. youth were retrieved from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health. Twenty indicators within five SDOH-related domains (e.i., economic stability, social and community context, neighborhood and built environment, health care access and quality, and education access and quality) were included. The presence of chronic pain was assessed using a self-reported question, answered by the main caregiver. Associations of SDOH-related indicators and youth chronic pain were estimated using multi-variable logistic regression models, while adjusting for covariates (e.g., age, sex, ethnicity, weight status, and movement behaviors). ResultsData from 30,287 U S. youth aged 6–17 years (median [SD] age, 11.59 [3.30] years; 14,582 girls [48.97 %]) were collected. In 7.5 % of the final sample size, caregivers reported that they had chronic pain. Youth grow up in conditions with diverse SDOH profiles, including food insufficiency (OR = 1.46, 95 % CI: 1.01 to 2.10) and parental unemployment (OR = 1.56, 95 % CI: 1.15 to 2.12); low school engagement (OR = 1.48, 95 % CI: 1.14 to 1.92) and low school safety (OR = 1.65, 95 % CI: 1.14 to 2.39); limited access to quality health care (OR = 2.56, 95 % CI: 2.12 to 3.09), a high frequency of hospital visits (OR = 4.76, 95 % CI: 1.82 to 12.44), and alternative health care (OR = 2.57, 95 % CI: 2.07 to 3.20); bullying victimization (OR = 1.37, 95 % CI: 1.11 to 1.68) and community-based adverse childhood experiences (OR = 1.64, 95 % CI: 1.32 to 2.05); and disadvantageous amenity characteristics (OR = 1.38, 95 % CI: 1.05 to 1.79); resulted in higher odds of presenting chronic pain. ConclusionsDifferent indicators included in the SDOH domains were associated with a higher probability of presenting chronic pain in U.S youth. These findings have implied relationships between the SDOH and chronic pain in youth, requiring a comprehensive approach to addressing health equity to prevent and reduce the presence of youth chronic pain.

The impact of the pandemic on physical and functional disabilities in children and adolescents with spina bifida.

Retrospective and cross-sectional study. The study aimed to carry out telemonitoring to identify the impact of the pandemic on physical and functional disabilities in children and adolescents with SB, as reported by their caregivers, and to investigate adherence to a teleservice. Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo (HCFMRP-USP). Retrospective and cross-sectional study. Fifty-three patients with SB (mean age 12.0 (4.0) years; 23 males) participated in the telemonitoring. A questionnaire - 'Health management, health conditions, rehabilitation, interest in teleservice, and the well-being of the main caregiver' - investigated the clinical impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Only three caregivers participated in the teleservice (video call). According to telemonitoring, 62% of the patients discontinued physiotherapy sessions, and 69% reported needing adjustments in locomotion devices. The main complaints were muscle weakness and pain. We monitored general health and identified demands related to physical rehabilitation using telemonitoring in 42.4% of children and adolescents with SB monitored at the HCFMRP-USP. Telemonitoring and teleservice may be methods used for monitoring health conditions in patients with SB.

Effects of an online mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for caregivers of children with allergic rhinitis.

The incidence of allergic rhinitis in children is high across the world, as well as in China. Allergic rhinitis in children has serious impact on physical and mental health of the children. At the same time, the caregivers of allergic rhinitis children have heavy burden of care, and their mental problems are severe. It is necessary to implement timely psychological intervention for the caregivers of allergic rhinitis children. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a safe and effective psychological therapy, and the effect of online intervention can be comparable to the traditional face-to-face intervention program. This study focused on the mental health status in the main caregivers of children with allergic rhinitis, and conducted a modified online MBCT intervention on the caregivers, in order to improve their adverse mental state, meanwhile, improve the quality of care they provide. The results show that online MBCT intervention is applicable to the main caregivers of children with allergic rhinitis, and can effectively reduce caregiver burden, relieve anxiety and depression, and improve the level of mindfulness in the caregivers.

Predictors of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among youth with bipolar disorder spectrum disorders and their caregivers

BackgroundLittle is known about rates of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among youth with bipolar spectrum disorders (BSD). As such, the aim of this study is to assess rates and predictors of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among youth with BSD and their caregivers in the United States. MethodsYouth and their main caregiver were recruited from a large pragmatic study cohort. Youth who were aged 8–22 at the time of this data collection, had a bipolar-spectrum disorder diagnosis, had overweight or obesity, and were treated with a second-generation antipsychotic were invited to participate in an online survey and interview assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. ResultsA total of 453 surveys and 341 interviews were completed 07/2021–05/2022 by youth and their caregivers. Sixty-seven percent of caregivers and 63 % of youth reported receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccine uptake rates among youth and caregivers were highly correlated. Predictors of vaccine uptake among youth were older age and living in the Northeast Region of the United States. Predictors of caregiver vaccine uptake were male sex, higher annual household income and not having to quarantine due to COVID-19. LimitationsThe sample was small and not a full representation of a population with bipolar-spectrum disorders therefore, the results may not be generalizable. The study design and statistical method do not allow for causal inferences to be made. ConclusionsThese findings may aid in targeting interventions to maximize COVID-19 and other vaccine uptake in youth with bipolar disorders and their families.

Dietary diversity and associated factors among households and children in internally displaced person camps in Southern Somalia: A cross-sectional study.

The study aimed to assess household and child dietary diversity in Southern Somalia by identifying determinants of adequate dietary diversity in three internally displaced person (IDP) camps in Baidoa, Dayniile and Dharkanley. A total of 1655 female main caregivers with 2370 children (6-59 months old) were included. Data on household dietary diversity score and child dietary diversity score indicators were collected from all households. The questionnaire was read face-to-face to the female main caregivers. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with adequate dietary diversity, which was defined as the consumption of at least four food groups within 24 h before the survey. The proportion of households achieving adequate HDDS was high in all locations 95.8%, 96.9% and 89.0% in Baidoa, Dharkanley and Dayniile, respectively, and the total adequate household dietary diversity score (AHDDS) was 95.6%. The proportion of adequate child dietary diversity score (ACDDS) was achieved in 63.5%, 8.5% and 38.3%. The main factors associated with AHDDS were larger household size, greater wealth, attendance of antenatal care (ANC) and joint decision-making between husband and wife, while factors associated with ACDDS included ANC attendance, age, the consumption of ready-to-use therapeutic food and deworming tablets. These findings can guide future programmes and policies aimed at improving maternal and child nutrition in IDP camps in Somalia. By tackling these diverse factors, a promising pathway emerges to enhance the nutritional welfare of both households and children in IDP camps.

Knowledge, Attitude, and Perceptions (KAP) Of Parents Regarding Risks For Unintentional Childhood Injuries

Background: Unintentional Injuries in childhood can have long-term and short-term impacts on the child and family. As their nature is to be curious about their environment, children tend to have falls and accidents. Parents, being the main caregivers, are responsible for their physical safety. From a research point of view, in a low economic setting such as India, there is knowledge of the prevalence and type of injuries but not the parental perspective. This study attempts to understand the knowledge, perception, and attitude of parents toward the risks of unintentional injuries. Methodology: 191 mothers and 149 fathers completed a survey questionnaire; followed by a demographic and percentage analysis. Results: The current study found that the majority of fathers and mothers agree on similar components of Knowledge and Attitude. However, there was a significant difference in the perception of risk and hazard concerning the severity. Conclusion: This forms the basis for outlining customized programs to equip parents in assisting with the safety aspect of their children. The strengths and limitations are mentioned. The findings have domestic, social, and healthcare policy-level implications.
