Improved Stresses Analysis of a Functionally Graded Beam under Prestressed CFRP Plate

In this paper, a new analytical solution is presented to predict the interfacial stresses of a functionally graded beam reinforced by a prestressed CFRP plate under thermo-mechanical load. A finite element (FE) analysis is also employed to validate the results of the analytical solution, the results from both models agreed very closely. Also, a parametric study is carried out in order to identify the effects of various material and geometrical properties on the magnitude of interfacial stresses. The presented results show that the interfacial stresses are highly concentrated at the end of the laminate, which can lead to a debonding at this location. Also, the material and geometrical properties have a significant impact on the magnitude of interfacial stresses. This new research approaches the practical reality of the structures in their environment by taking into consideration a combination of neglected terms by the other studies. Therefore, the results presented in this paper can serve as a benchmark for future analyses of functionally graded beams strengthened by prestressed Carbon fibre-rein-forced polymer (CFRP) plates and improve the rehabilitation, mechanical and corrosion resistance.

Effect of FRP-to-steel bonded joint configuration on interfacial stresses: Finite element investigation

Externally bonded fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites can be applied to strengthen and repair existing steel structures. In order to understand and quantify the behaviour of the bonded interface, researchers have conveniently tested FRP-to-steel joint assemblages. Both single- and double-shear joints of varying boundary conditions have been tested to date in which either the steel or FRP components have been loaded. In addition, the material and geometric properties of the joint materials have been varied and such variation in properties and test configuration will cause variation in the distribution and magnitude of interfacial stresses. This study presents the results of finite element simulations of the interfacial stresses of several FRP-to-steel joint configurations considered by researchers to date. Numerical simulations of interfacial stresses are also conducted on an FRP-strengthened I-beam and several key locations are examined in greater detail such as at the plate end, an intermediate fatigue induced crack, and a yielded zone. The beam stresses are compared with the stresses from the joint models and then joint configurations are identified which best capture the interfacial stress distributions at various positions along the length of the beam.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Behaviour and Strength of Composite Steel-CFRP Members

The use of advanced composite materials to strengthen and repair existing structures is increasing rapidly. One specific area in which the technique has recently been introduced is the strengthening of metallic structures with bonded carbon-fibre laminates. In this paper, the behaviour of composite steel-CFRP members is studied experimentally and using FE analysis. A new type of test specimen has been developed to examine the effect of various material parameters on the behaviour and strength of bonded steel-CFRP elements. Finite element analysis of the tested elements was also employed to examine the type and magnitude of interfacial stresses in the bond line of these elements. Moreover, different types of fracture mode could be examined by testing composite elements with different combinations of CFRP-laminates and adhesives. The tested composite elements displayed different behaviour and a large difference in strength and ductility could be observed.

The Effect of the Oceanic Boundary Layer on the Mean Drift of Pack Ice: Application of a Simple Model

Abstract Smoothed records of ice drift, surface wind and upper ocean currents at four manned stations of the 1975–76 AIDJEX experiment in the central Arctic have been analyzed to provide a statistical relationship between stress at the ice-ocean interface and ice-drift velocity during a 60-day period when the ice, was too weak to support internal forces. Using interfacial stress calculated from a balance with air stress and Coriolis force on the ice column for times longer than the inertial period, logarithmic linear regression of the stress-velocity samples provided the relation τ = 0.010V1.78, where τ is the magnitude of interfacial stress and V the ice speed relative to the geostrophic current in the ocean. This result is statistically indistinguishable from predictions of a numerical model adapted from Businger and Arya (1974) with surface roughness Z0 = 10 cm.
