Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient-driven skyrmion-based half-adder and full-adder.

Spintronic devices have revolutionized the way we process or store information compared to dissipative charge-based electronics. Among various spin-based technologies, skyrmions - topologically protected nano-size spin textures - have emerged as the most promising alternative for future data processing. Here, we have proposed binary adder circuits - central to most digital logic circuits - based on skyrmions. Using micromagnetic simulations, we have demonstrated half-adder and full-adder logic functionalities by precisely driving the skyrmions through voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient, besides taking advantage of the physical effects such as the skyrmion Hall effect, skyrmion-skyrmion topological repulsion and skyrmion-edge repulsions. The proposed voltage-control-based method of driving the skyrmions is energy efficient compared to the electrical current-driven approach, and it also overcomes the issue of Joule heating. A reliable operation in a wide range of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strengths, magnetic anisotropy gradient, and dimensional parameters has been shown, which offers robustness to the device design. The results pave the way for the skyrmion-based computational architecture, which is significant for next-generation non-volatile data processing.

A proposal for leaky integrate-and-fire neurons by domain walls in antiferromagnetic insulators

Brain-inspired neuromorphic computing is a promising path towards next generation analogue computers that are fundamentally different compared to the conventional von Neumann architecture. One model for neuromorphic computing that can mimic the human brain behavior are spiking neural networks (SNNs), of which one of the most successful is the leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) model. Since conventional complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices are not meant for modelling neural networks and are energy inefficient in network applications, recently the focus shifted towards spintronic-based neural networks. In this work, using the advantage of antiferromagnetic insulators, we propose a non-volatile magnonic neuron that could be the building block of a LIF spiking neuronal network. In our proposal, an antiferromagnetic domain wall in the presence of a magnetic anisotropy gradient mimics a biological neuron with leaky, integrating, and firing properties. This single neuron is controlled by polarized antiferromagnetic magnons, activated by either a magnetic field pulse or a spin transfer torque mechanism, and has properties similar to biological neurons, namely latency, refraction, bursting and inhibition. We argue that this proposed single neuron, based on antiferromagnetic domain walls, is faster and has more functionalities compared to previously proposed neurons based on ferromagnetic systems.

Dynamics of magnetic skyrmions under temperature gradients

We expand the Zhang–Li spin-transfer torque [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 127204 (2004)] to finite temperatures by the scattering amplitude. Considering various factors, including the adiabatic and diabatic effects of electrons and magnons, entropy equivalent field, thermal dipole field, thermal activation, magnetic-anisotropy gradient, and diffusion, we answer a recent question both experimentally and theoretically controversial: Will skyrmions move to the hot or cold region under thermal gradients?

Antiferromagnetic skyrmion-based logic gates controlled by electric currents and fields

Antiferromagnets are promising materials for future spintronic applications due to their unique properties including zero stray fields, robustness vs external magnetic fields, and ultrafast dynamics, which have attracted extensive interest in recent years. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of isolated skyrmions in an antiferromagnetic nanotrack with a voltage-gated region. It is found that the skyrmion can be jointly controlled by the driving current and the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient. We further propose a design of logic computing gates based on the manipulation of antiferromagnetic skyrmions, which is numerically realized combining several interactions and phenomena, including the spin Hall effect, voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy effect, skyrmion–skyrmion interaction, and skyrmion–edge interaction. The proposed logic gates can perform the basic Boolean operations of the logic AND, OR, NOT, NAND, and NOR gates. Our results may have a great impact on fundamental physics and be useful for designing future nonvolatile logic computing devices with ultra-low energy consumption and ultra-high storage density.

Magnetic skyrmionium diode with a magnetic anisotropy voltage gating

The magnetic skyrmionium can be seen as a coalition of two magnetic skyrmions with opposite topological charges and has potential applications in next-generation spintronic devices. Here, we report the current-driven dynamics of a skyrmionium in a ferromagnetic nanotrack with the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy. The pinning and depinning of a skyrmionium controlled by the voltage gate are investigated. The current-driven skyrmionium can be used to mimic the skyrmionium diode effect in the nanotrack with a voltage gate. We have further studied the skyrmionium dynamics in the nanotrack driven by a magnetic anisotropy gradient in the absence of spin current. The performance of a single wedge-shaped voltage gate at different temperatures is studied. Our results may provide useful guidelines for the design of voltage-controlled and skyrmionium-based spintronic devices.

Ultrafast domain wall motion in ferrimagnets induced by magnetic anisotropy gradient

The ultrafast magnetic dynamics in compensated ferrimagnets not only provides information similar to antiferromagnetic dynamics, but more importantly opens new opportunities for future spintronic devices [Kim et al., Nat. Mater. 16, 1187 (2017)]. One of the most essential issues for device design is searching for low-power-consuming and high-efficient methods of controlling domain wall. In this work, we propose to use the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient as an excitation source to drive the domain wall motion in ferrimagnets. The ultrafast wall motion under the anisotropy gradient is predicted theoretically based on the collective coordinate theory, which is confirmed by the atomistic micromagnetic simulations. The antiferromagnetic spin dynamics is realized at the angular momentum compensation point, and the wall shifting has a constant speed under small gradient and can be slightly accelerated under large gradient due to the broadened wall width during the motion. For nonzero net angular momentum, the Walker breakdown occurs at a critical anisotropy gradient significantly depending on the second anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, which is highly appreciated for further experiments including the materials selection and device geometry design. More importantly, this work unveils a low-power-consuming method of controlling the domain wall in ferrimagnets, benefiting to future spintronic applications.

Dynamics of antiskyrmions induced by the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient

Magnetic skyrmions could serve as information carriers in next-generation information storage and processing devices. Effective manipulation of the skyrmion motion is a vital task for realizing skyrmion-based applications. Skyrmion motion driven by voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) has been proposed, of which the investigation is mostly focused on the dynamics of skyrmions. Here, using micromagnetic simulations we show that antiskyrmions can be effectively driven by the VCMA gradient in the presence of the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find that the antiskyrmion shows a transverse motion, i.e., the skyrmion Hall effect, induced by the VCMA gradient. As the skyrmion number of an antiskyrmion is opposite to that of a skyrmion, the anisotropy gradient-induced motion of ferromagnetically coupled skyrmion-antiskyrmion pair and antiferromagnetically coupled skyrmion-skyrmion and antiskyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs do not show the skyrmion Hall effect. We find that the velocity-driving force relations of these three combinations are different. Our results may provide guidelines for building future skyrmion-based information processing applications.

Voltage-induced high-speed DW motion in a synthetic antiferromagnet

Voltage-induced motion of a magnetic domain wall (DW) has potential in developing novel devices with ultralow dissipation. However, the speed for the voltage-induced DW motion (VIDWM) in a single ferromagnetic layer is usually very low. In this work, we proposed VIDWM with high speed in a synthetic antiferromaget (SAF). In the medium with a small damping coefficient, the velocity for the coupled DWs in the SAF is significantly higher than its counterpart in a single ferromagnetic layer. Strong interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange coupling plays a critical role for the high DW velocity since it inhibits the tilting of DW plane with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. On the other hand, in the material with a large damping coefficient, the Walker breakdown of DW motion is also inhibited due to the stabilization of moment orientation under a strong interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling. In theory, the voltage-induced gradient of magnetic anisotropy is proved to be equal to an effective magnetic field that drives DW.

Magnetic properties of isolated skyrmion under the in-plane magnetic field and anisotropy gradient

The basic magnetic properties of isolated skyrmions in thin films are fundamental to understanding the physics of magnetic skyrmions and their applications in potential spintronic devices. Here, we study the static and dynamic magnetic properties of isolated skyrmions under an in-plane magnetic field and a magnetic anisotropy gradient using micromagnetic simulations. The results demonstrate that the rotational symmetry of skyrmions is broken under the in-plane field. The radius and domain wall width of the isolated skyrmion exhibits the dependence of the external stimuli. Furthermore, the skyrmion velocity can be effectively modulated by the anisotropy gradient as well as the in-plane field. An analysis model is also derived. This work may provide guidance for the design of next-generation spintronic devices.

Bilayer skyrmion dynamics on a magnetic anisotropy gradient

Magnetic skyrmion transport has been primarily based on the use of spin torques which require high current densities and face performance deterioration associated with Joule heating. In this work, we derive an analytical model for energy efficient skyrmion propagation in an antiferromagnetically-coupled bilayer structure using a magnetic anisotropy gradient. The interlayer skyrmion coupling provides a strong restoring force between the skyrmions, which not only prevents annihilation but also increases their forward velocity up to the order of km s–1. For materials with low Gilbert damping parameter, the interlayer skyrmion coupling force can be amplified up to ten times, with a corresponding increase in velocity. Furthermore, the analytical model also provides insights into the dynamics of skyrmion pinning and relaxation of asymmetric skyrmion pairs in bilayer-coupled skyrmion systems.

Dynamics of the antiferromagnetic skyrmion induced by a magnetic anisotropy gradient

The dynamics of antiferromagnets is a current hot topic in condensed matter physics and spintronics. However, the dynamics of insulating antiferromagnets cannot be excited by an electric current, which is a method usually used to manipulate ferromagnetic metals. Here, we propose to use the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient as an excitation source to manipulate insulating antiferromagnetic textures. We analytically and numerically study the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion driven by a magnetic anisotropy gradient. Our analytical calculations demonstrate that such a magnetic anisotropy gradient can effectively drive an antiferromagnetic skyrmion towards the area of lower magnetic anisotropy. The micromagnetic simulations are in good agreement with our analytical solution. Furthermore, the magnetic anisotropy gradient induced velocity of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion is compared with that of a ferromagnetic skyrmion. Our results are useful for the understanding of antiferromagnetic skyrmion dynamics and may open a new way for the design of antiferromagnetic spintronic devices.

Efficient skyrmion transport mediated by a voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient.

Despite the inefficiencies associated with current-induced spin torques, they remain the predominant mode of skyrmion propulsion. In this work, we demonstrate numerically that skyrmions can be transported much more efficiently with a voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) gradient. An analytical model was developed to understand the underlying skyrmion dynamics on a track under the VCMA conditions. Our calculations reveal that the repulsive skyrmion-edge interaction not only prevents the skyrmion from annihilating but also generates most of the skyrmion propulsion. A multiplexed array of gate electrodes can be used to create discrete anisotropy gradients over a long distance, leading to the formation of a series of translatable skyrmion potential wells. Due to the strong confining potentials, skyrmions are transported at a 70% higher packing density. Finally, we demonstrated that this form of skyrmion propulsion can also be implemented on almost any 2D geometry, providing improved versatility over current-induced methods.

Micromagnetic Simulations of Magnetization Spatial Distribution in Ultrathin Cobalt Layers With Gradient Magnetic Anisotropy

Spatial distribution of magnetization in an ultrathin ferromagnetic Co layer with a lateral gradient of magnetic anisotropy, while approaching spin reorientation transition (SRT) (from perpendicular to in-plane magnetization alignment), has been investigated by means of micromagnetic simulations in the 2-D mode, using OOMMF software. The geometry of the out-of-plane-magnetized domains (parallel stripes, labyrinth, and bubbles) has been found to be dependent on both the initial distribution of magnetization and the direction of the applied magnetic field. A fast decrease in the domain size has been observed while moving toward SRT. In the experiment, Pt/Co/Pt layers with initial in-plane magnetization orientation have been irreversibly modified by femtosecond laser pulses. In the irradiated spot, rings with induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been formed, resulting in an appearance of several local SRTs. Magnetic domain structure in the SRT regions has been visualized using magnetic force microscopy. The experimental observations are qualitatively explained by the results of the micromagnetic simulations.

Spin-orbit-torque-induced magnetic domain wall motion in Ta/CoFe nanowires with sloped perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

In materials with the gradient of magnetic anisotropy, spin-orbit-torque-induced magnetization behaviour has attracted attention because of its intriguing scientific principle and potential application. Most of the magnetization behaviours microscopically originate from magnetic domain wall motion, which can be precisely depicted using the standard cooperative coordinate method (CCM). However, the domain wall motion in materials with the gradient of magnetic anisotropy using the CCM remains lack of investigation. In this paper, by adopting CCM, we established a set of equations to quantitatively depict the spin-orbit-torque-induced motion of domain walls in a Ta/CoFe nanotrack with weak Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and magnetic anisotropy gradient. The equations were solved numerically, and the solutions are similar to those of a micromagnetic simulation. The results indicate that the enhanced anisotropy along the track acts as a barrier to inhibit the motion of the domain wall. In contrast, the domain wall can be pushed to move in a direction with reduced anisotropy, with the velocity being accelerated by more than twice compared with that for the constant anisotropy case. This substantial velocity manipulation by anisotropy engineering is important in designing novel magnetic information devices with high reading speeds.

Current-driven perpendicular magnetization switching in Ta/CoFeB/[TaOx or MgO/TaOx] films with lateral structural asymmetry

We study the current-driven perpendicular magnetization switching in Ta/CoFeB(wedge)/[TaOx or MgO/TaOx] devices with a lateral structural asymmetry introduced by a varying CoFeB thickness. In these devices, an in-plane current can generate a field-like torque and its corresponding effective magnetic field (HzFL) is out-of-plane, which can deterministically switch perpendicular magnetization at zero magnetic field. Experimental results indicate that the method used for breaking lateral structural symmetry greatly affects the resulting field-like torque, and that the gradient of perpendicular anisotropy, resulting from the CoFeB thickness variation, is not by itself sufficient to give rise to the current-induced HzFL. Analysis of the oxidation gradient at the CoFeB/TaOx interface indicates that the oxidation gradient may play a more important role than the gradient of magnetic anisotropy for the generation of HzFL. For practical applications, the demonstration of perpendicular magnetization switching in Ta/CoFeB(wedge)/MgO/TaOx devices potentially allows for using MgO-based magnetic tunnel junctions for readout in three-terminal memory devices without the need for external magnetic fields.

Revisiting magnetic stripe domains — anisotropy gradient and stripe asymmetry

The thickness dependent generation of magnetic stripe domains in NiFe films is investigated by in-depth magnetic domain and micromagnetic analysis, as well as complementary analysis of the microstructure by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. A gradient of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with film thickness is found. Micromagnetic simulations show that the anisotropy gradient results in an asymmetric stripe domain configuration. Columnar grain coarsening and texture development with thickness are derived from the microstructural investigations. The variations correspondingly lead to the gradient of magnetic anisotropy and to an asymmetric magnetic stripe domain structure.

Vertically graded anisotropy in Co/Pd multilayers

Depth-grading of magnetic anisotropy in perpendicular magnetic media has been predicted to reduce the field required to write data without sacrificing thermal stability. To study this prediction, we have produced Co/Pd multilayers with depth-dependent Co layer thickness. Polarized neutron reflectometry shows that the thickness grading results in a corresponding magnetic anisotropy gradient. Magnetometry reveals that the anisotropy gradient promotes domain nucleation upon magnetization reversal - a clear experimental demonstration of the effectiveness of graded anisotropy for reducing write-field.

Compositionally Graded Magnetic Multilayer Films for High Areal Density Longitudinal Recording

Compositionally graded magnetic multilayer (CGM) structures were investigated to improve media signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as well as thermal stability. The medium structure consists of multiple magnetic layers that play an important role in determining the crystallographic texture as well as magnetic activation volume. Low medium noise is achieved while retaining high resolution, as the number of layers is increased. The CGM media offer a magnetic anisotropy gradient from the top to bottom layers, which enhances head writability at high frequencies without affecting thermal stability. Improved magnetic and recording properties such as high K/sub u/ V/kT, SNR, and overwrite are obtained with CGM media, suitable for high areal density recording.
