Image-driven machine learning for automatic characterization of grain size and distribution in smart vanadium dioxide thin films

This study focuses on characterizing grain size and distribution in vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) images. Traditional segmentation methods face challenges in accurately detecting grains, and this paper addresses these limitations by employing machine learning-based classification approaches, defining three classes: grains, joints or dividing lines, and the background. Various classification methods, including supervised, unsupervised, and thresholding-based approaches, were investigated, demonstrating the superiority of machine learning-based methods over traditional segmentation techniques. Deep Learning (DL) models, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Deep Belief Networks (DBN), and Deep Boltzmann Machines (DBM), achieved the best results in accuracy and precision. The DBN algorithm, in particular, outperformed other methods with a 93.66% accuracy in grain detection. This could be attributed to its probabilistic modeling and effective handling of challenging pixels, making it a powerful tool for accurate grain size and distribution analysis.

An automatic system to detect colorectal polyp using hybrid fused method from colonoscopy images

The third most common disease in the world that leads to mortality is colorectal cancer (CRC). Colonoscopy, which locates and removes colonic polyps, is the most common procedure worldwide for the early identification and preventative treatment of colorectal cancer. The likelihood of a CRC patient dying can be considerably decreased by early diagnosis and treatment of precancerous polyps. Unidentified polyps may eventually turn into cancer. Although several classification algorithms have been put out to identify polyps, their effectiveness has not yet been compared to that of skilled endoscopes. An ensemble machine learning-based classification approach for detecting colorectal cancer from colonoscopy images is presented in this research. Firstly researchers collect colorectal cancer or polyp images from three standard datasets. In the preprocessing phase, researcher convert the RGB image to grayscale image and identified the region of interest (ROI) by removing the unwanted regions. A hybrid anisotropic diffusion filtering (HADF) approach was employed to eliminate noise from each image. Then the system extracts features from individual feature extractor methods and fused extracted features in a vector. The fused features help to detect colorectal polyp or cancer for increasing cancer or polyp identification rates. Finally, an ensemble classifier classifies the colorectal cancer or normal images and achieves better accuracy. The suggested technique exceeds the prior conventional methods, according to tests on widely used public datasets, improving accuracy by 99.45 %, sensitivity by 99.30 %, specificityby 99.58 %, and precision 99.53 %.

Automatic Malignant and Benign Skin Cancer Classification Using a Hybrid Deep Learning Approach.

Skin cancer is one of the major types of cancer with an increasing incidence in recent decades. The source of skin cancer arises in various dermatologic disorders. Skin cancer is classified into various types based on texture, color, morphological features, and structure. The conventional approach for skin cancer identification needs time and money for the predicted results. Currently, medical science is utilizing various tools based on digital technology for the classification of skin cancer. The machine learning-based classification approach is the robust and dominant approach for automatic methods of classifying skin cancer. The various existing and proposed methods of deep neural network, support vector machine (SVM), neural network (NN), random forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor are used for malignant and benign skin cancer identification. In this study, a method was proposed based on the stacking of classifiers with three folds towards the classification of melanoma and benign skin cancers. The system was trained with 1000 skin images with the categories of melanoma and benign. The training and testing were performed using 70 and 30 percent of the overall data set, respectively. The primary feature extraction was conducted using the Resnet50, Xception, and VGG16 methods. The accuracy, F1 scores, AUC, and sensitivity metrics were used for the overall performance evaluation. In the proposed Stacked CV method, the system was trained in three levels by deep learning, SVM, RF, NN, KNN, and logistic regression methods. The proposed method for Xception techniques of feature extraction achieved 90.9% accuracy and was stronger compared to ResNet50 and VGG 16 methods. The improvement and optimization of the proposed method with a large training dataset could provide a reliable and robust skin cancer classification system.

The menace of saffron adulteration: Low-cost rapid identification of fake look-alike saffron using Foldscope and machine learning technology.

Saffron authenticity is important for the saffron industry, consumers, food industry, and regulatory agencies. Herein we describe a combo of two novel methods to distinguish genuine saffron from fake in a user-friendly manner and without sophisticated instruments. A smartphone coupled with Foldscope was used to visualize characteristic features and distinguish “genuine” saffron from “fake.” Furthermore, destaining and staining agents were used to study the staining patterns. Toluidine blue staining pattern was distinct and easier to use as it stained the papillae and the margins deep purple, while its stain is lighter yellowish green toward the central axis. Further to automate the process, we tested and compared different machine learning-based classification approaches for performing the automated saffron classification into genuine or fake. We demonstrated that the deep learning-based models are efficient in learning the morphological features and classifying samples as either fake or genuine, making it much easier for end-users. This approach performed much better than conventional machine learning approaches (random forest and SVM), and the model achieved an accuracy of 99.5% and a precision of 99.3% on the test dataset. The process has increased the robustness and reliability of authenticating saffron samples. This is the first study that describes a customer-centric frugal science-based approach to creating an automated app to detect adulteration. Furthermore, a survey was conducted to assess saffron adulteration and quality. It revealed that only 40% of samples belonged to ISO Category I, while the average adulteration percentage in the remaining samples was 36.25%. After discarding the adulterants from crude samples, their quality parameters improved significantly, elevating these from ISO category III to Category II. Conversely, it also means that Categories II and III saffron are more prone to and favored for adulteration by fraudsters.

Four-Class Classification of Neuropsychiatric Disorders by Use of Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Derived Biomarkers

Diagnosis of most neuropsychiatric disorders relies on subjective measures, which makes the reliability of final clinical decisions questionable. The aim of this study was to propose a machine learning-based classification approach for objective diagnosis of three disorders of neuropsychiatric or neurological origin with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) derived biomarkers. Thirteen healthy adolescents and sixty-seven patients who were clinically diagnosed with migraine, obsessive compulsive disorder, or schizophrenia performed a Stroop task, while prefrontal cortex hemodynamics were monitored with fNIRS. Hemodynamic and cognitive features were extracted for training three supervised learning algorithms (naïve bayes (NB), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and support vector machines (SVM)). The performance of each algorithm in correctly predicting the class of each participant across the four classes was tested with ten runs of a ten-fold cross-validation procedure. All algorithms achieved four-class classification performances with accuracies above 81% and specificities above 94%. SVM had the highest performance in terms of accuracy (85.1 ± 1.77%), sensitivity (84 ± 1.7%), specificity (95 ± 0.5%), precision (86 ± 1.6%), and F1-score (85 ± 1.7%). fNIRS-derived features have no subjective report bias when used for automated classification purposes. The presented methodology might have significant potential for assisting in the objective diagnosis of neuropsychiatric disorders associated with frontal lobe dysfunction.

Fake Job Detection Using Machine Learning

Abstract: The research proposes an automated solution based on machine learning-based classification approaches to prevent fraudulent job postings on the internet. Many organizations these days like to list their job openings online so that job seekers may access them quickly and simply. However, this could be a form of scam perpetrated by con artists who offer job seekers work in exchange for money. Many people are duped by this fraud and lose a lot of money as a result. We can determine which job postings are fraudulent and which are not by conducting an exploratory data analysis on the data and using the insights gained. In order to detect bogus posts, a machine learning approach is used, which employs numerous categorization algorithms. The system would train the model to classify jobs as authentic or false based on previous data of bogus and legitimate job postings. To start, supervised learning algorithms as classification techniques can be considered to handle the challenge of recognizing scammers on job postings. It will employ two or more machine learning algorithms, selecting the one that yields the highest accuracy score in the prediction of whether a job advertising headline is genuine or not. Host phenotype classification from human microbiome data is mainly driven by the presence of microbial taxa.

Machine learning-based classification approaches are widely used to predict host phenotypes from microbiome data. Classifiers are typically employed by considering operational taxonomic units or relative abundance profiles as input features. Such types of data are intrinsically sparse, which opens the opportunity to make predictions from the presence/absence rather than the relative abundance of microbial taxa. This also poses the question whether it is the presence rather than the abundance of particular taxa to be relevant for discrimination purposes, an aspect that has been so far overlooked in the literature. In this paper, we aim at filling this gap by performing a meta-analysis on 4,128 publicly available metagenomes associated with multiple case-control studies. At species-level taxonomic resolution, we show that it is the presence rather than the relative abundance of specific microbial taxa to be important when building classification models. Such findings are robust to the choice of the classifier and confirmed by statistical tests applied to identifying differentially abundant/present taxa. Results are further confirmed at coarser taxonomic resolutions and validated on 4,026 additional 16S rRNA samples coming from 30 public case-control studies.

A machine learning–based classification approach for phase diagram prediction

Knowledge of phase diagrams is essential for material design as it helps in understanding microstructure evolution during processing. The determination of phase diagrams is thus one of the central tasks in materials science. When exploring new materials for which the phase diagram is unknown, experimentalists often try to determine the key experiments that should be performed by referencing known phase diagrams of similar systems. To enhance this practical strategy, we attempted to estimate unknown phase diagrams based on known phase diagrams using a machine learning–based classification approach. As a proof of concept, we focused on predicting the number of coexisting phases across the 800 K isothermal section of each of the 10 ternaries of the Al-Cu-Mg-Si-Zn system from the other 9 sections. To increase the prediction accuracy, we introduced new descriptors generated from the thermodynamic properties of the elements and CALPHAD extrapolations from lower-order systems. Using the random forest method, the presence of single-, two-, and three-phase domains was predicted with an average accuracy of 84% across all 10 considered sections with a standard deviation of 11%. The proposed approach represents a promising tool for assisting the investigator in developing new materials and determining phase equilibria efficiently.

Evaluating Machine Learning-Based Classification Approaches: A New Method for Comparing Classifiers Applied to Human Driver Prediction Intentions

In this research, a new performance assessment based on the Probability of Detection (POD) reliability measure is developed integrating and discussing the effect of further parameters on classification results and therefore establishing a new connection between relevant process parameters and the related classifier evaluation. To illustrate the introduced approach, machine learning-based recognition of complex driving situations for human drivers is interpreted. Based on sensor signals and a complex driving scenario, related dynamical changes are classified and compared using the POD approach. Based on the POD-related evaluation, different machine learning approaches can be clearly distinguished with respect to their ability to predict the correct driver behavior as a function of time prior to the event itself. The introduced approach allows a very detailed comparison of classifiers related to the effects of parameters affecting the processes to be classified. In addition to recently published results on this novel approach, an extension of the POD approach by considering false positives and varying decision threshold in the comparison process is proposed. Generalization of the introduced approach for binary and continuous data is presented.

Diverse Analysis of Data Mining and Machine Learning Algorithms to Secure Computer Network

Network attacks are becoming more complex, making it more difficult to detect intrusions. Various research have been done over the years, employing different categorization techniques of Data Mining (DM) and Machine Learning (ML) inspired hybrid approaches to develop robust IDS. Almost all researchers suggested to improve accuracy in intrusion detection with low computational cost. Authors observed that dissimilar sets of features were picked for different classifiers to get the highest accuracy. This paper is dedicated to a review of relevant research, where an in-depth investigation was carried out with two emphasis points of IDS, which contain distinct pre-processing techniques in the form of feature selection and a diversity of classification algorithms. In addition, this paper presents a comparative algorithmic assessment of the DM and ML techniques applied to create an intelligent IDS. A novel feature selection method based on the CART algorithm has also introduced which provides optimal feature subset of the dataset so perfectly that it has made various existing DM and ML classifying algorithms more performant than earlier, this makes classifiers independent of feature selection. To validate the performance of proposed work, experiments have performed using the ‘Python’ programming language and ‘corrected’ & ‘10_percent’ of ‘Kddcup99’ datasets used as benchmark. As an outcome proposed work, we found that feature reduction and selecting a classifier had a significant influence on the rate of intrusion detection accuracy. The results of simulation and comparison analysis of proposed work with existing DM and ML based classification approaches show that the suggested work is more competent in true prediction and attaining maximum intrusion detection accuracy with minimal computing cost of prediction.

An ensemble deep learning technique for detecting suicidal ideation from posts in social media platforms

Suicidal ideation detection from social media is an evolving research with great challenges. Many of the people who have the tendency to suicide share their thoughts and opinions through social media platforms. As part of many researches it is observed that the publicly available posts from social media contain valuable criteria to effectively detect individuals with suicidal thoughts. The most difficult part to prevent suicide is to detect and understand the complex risk factors and warning signs that may lead to suicide. This can be achieved by identifying the sudden changes in a user’s behavior automatically. Natural language processing techniques can be used to collect behavioral and textual features from social media interactions and these features can be passed to a specially designed framework to detect anomalies in human interactions that are indicators of suicidal intentions. We can achieve fast detection of suicidal ideation using deep learning and/or machine learning based classification approaches. For such a purpose, we can employ the combination of LSTM and CNN models to detect such emotions from posts of the users. In order to improve the accuracy, some approaches like using more data for training, using attention model to improve the efficiency of existing models etc. could be done. This paper proposes a LSTM-Attention-CNN combined model to analyze social media submissions to detect any underlying suicidal intentions. During evaluations, the proposed model demonstrated an accuracy of 90.3% and an F1-score of 92.6%, which is greater than the baseline models.

Crash severity analysis of vulnerable road users using machine learning

Road crash fatality is a universal problem of the transportation system. A massive death toll caused annually due to road crash incidents, and among them, vulnerable road users (VRU) are endangered with high crash severity. This paper focuses on employing machine learning-based classification approaches for modelling injury severity of vulnerable road users-pedestrian, bicyclist, and motorcyclist. Specifically, this study aims to analyse critical features associated with different VRU groups-for pedestrian, bicyclist, motorcyclist and all VRU groups together. The critical factor of crash severity outcomes for these VRU groups is estimated in identifying the similarities and differences across different important features associated with different VRU groups. The crash data for the study is sourced from the state of Queensland in Australia for the years 2013 through 2019. The supervised machine learning algorithms considered for the empirical analysis includes the K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF). In these models, 17 distinct road crash parameters are considered as input features to train models, which originate from road user characteristics, weather and environment, vehicle and driver condition, period, road characteristics and regions, traffic, and speed jurisdiction. These classification models are separately trained and tested for individual and unified VRU to assess crash severity levels. Afterwards, model performances are compared with each other to justify the best classifier where Random Forest classification models for all VRU modes are found to be comparatively robust in test accuracy: (motorcyclist: 72.30%, bicyclist: 64.45%, pedestrian: 67.23%, unified VRU: 68.57%). Based on the Random Forest model, the road crash features are ranked and compared according to their impact on crash severity classification. Furthermore, a model-based partial dependency of each road crash parameters on the severity levels is plotted and compared for each individual and unified VRU. This clarifies the tendency of road crash parameters to vary with different VRU crash severity. Based on the outcome of the comparative analysis, motorcyclists are found to be more likely exposed to higher crash severity, followed by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Detecting Comments on News Articles in Microblogs

A reader of a news article would often be interested in the comments of other readers on an article, because comments give insight into popular opinions or feelings toward a given piece of news. In recent years, social media platforms, such as Twitter, have become a social hub for users to communicate and express their thoughts. This includes sharing news articles and commenting on them. In this paper, we propose an approach for identifying “comment-tweets” that comment on news articles. We discuss the nature of comment-tweets and compare them to subjective tweets. We utilize a machine learning-based classification approach for distinguishing between comment-tweets and others that only report the news. Our approach is evaluated on the TREC-2011 Microblog track data after applying additional annotations to tweets containing comments. Results show the effectiveness of our classification approach. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on live news articles.

An Approach Based on the Improved SVM Algorithm for Identifying Malware in Network Traffic

Due to the growth and popularity of the internet, cyber security remains, and will continue, to be an important issue. There are many network traffic classification methods or malware identification approaches that have been proposed to solve this problem. However, the existing methods are not well suited to help security experts effectively solve this challenge due to their low accuracy and high false positive rate. To this end, we employ a machine learning-based classification approach to identify malware. The approach extracts features from network traffic and reduces the dimensionality of the features, which can effectively improve the accuracy of identification. Furthermore, we propose an improved SVM algorithm for classifying the network traffic dubbed Optimized Facile Support Vector Machine (OFSVM). The OFSVM algorithm solves the problem that the original SVM algorithm is not satisfactory for classification from two aspects, i.e., parameter optimization and kernel function selection. Therefore, in this paper, we present an approach for identifying malware in network traffic, called Network Traffic Malware Identification (NTMI). To evaluate the effectiveness of the NTMI approach proposed in this paper, we collect four real network traffic datasets and use a publicly available dataset CAIDA for our experiments. Evaluation results suggest that the NTMI approach can lead to higher accuracy while achieving a lower false positive rate compared with other identification methods. On average, the NTMI approach achieves an accuracy of 92.5% and a false positive rate of 5.527%.

Effectiveness of autoencoder for lake area extraction from high-resolution RGB imagery: an experimental study.

The surface areas of lakes alter constantly due to many factors such as climate change, land use policies, and human interventions, and their surface areas tend to decrease. It is necessary for obtain baseline datasets such as surface areas and boundaries of water bodies with high accuracy, effectively, economically, and practically by using satellite images in terms of management and planning of lakes. Extracting surface areas of water bodies using image classification algorithms and high-resolution RGB satellite images and evaluating the effectiveness of different image classification algorithms have become an important research domain. In this experimental study, eight different machine learning-based classification approaches, namely, k-nearest neighborhood (kNN), subspaced kNN, support vector machines (SVMs), random forest (RF), bagged tree (BT), Naive Bayes (NB), and linear discriminant (LD), have been utilized to extract the surface areas of lakes. Lastly, autoencoder (AE) classification algorithm was applied, and the effectiveness of all those algorithms was compared. Experimental studies were carried out on three different lakes (Hazar Lake, Salda Lake, Manyas Lake) using high-resolution Turkish RASAT RGB satellite images. The results indicated that AE algorithm obtained the highest accuracy values in both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Another important aspect of this study is that Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) and Universal Image Quality Index (UIQI) metrics that can evaluate close to human perception are used for comparison. With this application, it has been shown that overall accuracy calculated from test data may be inadequate in some cases by using SSIM, UIQI, mean squared error (MSE), peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), and Cohen's KAPPA metrics. In the last application, the robustness of AE was examined with boxplots.

Ensemble‐based glioma grade classification using Gabor filter bank and rotation forest

This work aims at developing an automated ensemble-based glioma grade classification framework that classifies glioma into low-grade glioma (LGG) and high-grade glioma (HGG). Discriminant features are extracted using the Gabor filter bank and concatenated in a vectorised form. The feature set is then divided into k subsets of features. An ensemble of base classifiers known as rotation forest is employed for classification purpose. Independent components analysis (ICA) is applied on every feature subset and independent features are extracted. Each classifier in the ensemble is trained with these independent features from all the subset of features. These k feature subsets are responsible for different rotations during the training phase. This results in classifier diversity in the ensemble. Extensive experiments are conducted on benchmark BraTS 2017 data set and comparative analysis reveals that the proposed framework outperforms the competitive techniques in terms of various performance metrics. Data-augmentation technique, synthetic minority over-sampling technique is applied to oversample minority class samples alleviate class biasness problem. The proposed classification framework achieves an accuracy of 98.63%, dice similarity coefficient of 0.98 and sensitivity of 0.96. The authors conduct different comparative experiments with state-of-the-art ensemble-based, deep learning-based and traditional machine learning-based classification approaches to validate the performance of the proposed framework.
