Imaging the innermost gaseous layers of the Mira star R Car with GRAVITY-VLTI

Context. The mass-loss mechanisms in M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are still not well understood; these include, in particular, the formation of dust-driven winds from the innermost gaseous layers around these stars. One way to understand the gas-dust interaction in these regions and its impact on the mass-loss mechanisms is through the analysis of high-resolution observations of the stellar surface and its closest environment. Aims. We aim to characterize the inner circumstellar environment (~3 R*) of the M-type Mira star R Car in the near-infrared at different phases of a pulsation period. Methods. We used GRAVITY interferometric observations in the K band obtained during two different epochs over 2018. Those data were analyzed using parametric models and image reconstruction of both the pseudo-continuum and the CO band heads observed. The reported data are the highest angular resolution observations on the source in the K band. Results. We determined sizes of R Car’s stellar disk of 16.67 ± 0.05 mas (3.03 au) in January 2018 and 14.84 ± 0.06 mas (2.70 au) in February, 2018, respectively. From our physical model, we determined temperatures and size ranges for the innermost CO layer detected around R Car. The derived column density of the CO is in the ~9.18×1018–1×1019 cm−2 range, which is sufficient to permit dust nucleation and the formation of stable dust-driven winds. We find that magnesium composites, Mg2SiO4 and MgSiO3, have temperatures and condensation distances consistent with the ones obtained for the CO layer model and pure-line reconstructed images, which are the dust types most likely to be responsible for wind formation. Our reconstructed images show evidence of asymmetrical and inhomogeneous structures, which might trace a complex and perhaps clumpy structure of the CO molecule distribution. Conclusions. Our work demonstrates that the conditions for dust nucleation and thus for initialising dust-driven winds in M-type AGB stars are met in R Car, and we identify magnesium composites as the most probable candidates. We find structural changes between two observing epochs (which are separated by ~10% of the full pulsation period of the star) and evidence of the effects of asymmetries and clumpiness. This observational evidence is crucial to constraining the role of convection and pulsation in M-type stars.

Global 3D radiation-hydrodynamical models of AGB stars with dust-driven winds

Context. Convection and mass loss by stellar winds are two dynamical processes that shape asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and their evolution. Observations and earlier 3D models indicate that giant convection cells cause high-contrast surface intensity patterns, and contribute to the origin of clumpy dust clouds. Aims. We study the formation and resulting properties of dust-driven winds from AGB stars, using new global 3D simulations. Methods. The dynamical stellar interiors, atmospheres, and wind acceleration zones of two M-type AGB stars were modeled with the CO5BOLD code. These first global 3D simulations are based on frequency-dependent gas opacities, and they feature time-dependent condensation and evaporation of silicate grains. Results. Convection and pulsations emerge self-consistently, allowing us to derive wind properties (e.g., mass-loss rates and outflow velocities), without relying on parameterized descriptions of these processes. In contrast to 1D models with purely radial pulsations, the shocks induced by convection and pulsation in the 3D models cover large parts, but not the entirety, of the sphere, leading to a patchy, nonspherical structure of the atmosphere. Since dust condensation critically depends on gas density, new dust clouds form mostly in the dense wakes of atmospheric shocks, where the grains can grow efficiently. The resulting clumpy distribution of newly formed dust leads to a complex 3D morphology of the extended atmosphere and wind-acceleration zone, with simultaneous infall and outflow regions close to the star. Highly nonspherical isotherms and short-lived cool pockets of gas in the stellar vicinity are prominent features. Efficient dust formation sets in closer to the star than spherical averages of the temperature indicate, in dense regions where grain growth rates are higher than average. This can lead to weak outflows in situations where corresponding 1D models do not produce winds. For stars where the overall conditions for dust formation and wind acceleration are favorable, it is unclear whether the resulting mass-loss rates will be higher or lower than in the 1D case. The increased efficiency of dust formation in high-density clumps may be offset by a low volume coverage of the forming clouds. Conclusions. A global 3D approach is essential to make progress in understanding dynamical processes in AGB stars, and, in particular, to solve long-standing problems regarding mass loss.

η Geminorum: an eclipsing semiregular variable star orbited by a companion surrounded by an extended disc

ABSTRACT We report 11 yr of spectroscopic monitoring of the M-type asymptotic giant branch star η Gem, a semiregular variable and a known spectroscopic binary with a period of 8.2 yr. We combine our radial velocities with others from the literature to provide an improved spectroscopic orbital solution, giving a period of 2979 d, which we then use to predict past times of eclipse. We examine archival photometry from amateur variable star observers, and other sources, and find many instances of dimmings that occurred at the right time. This confirms previous indications that the system is eclipsing, and it now ranks among those with the longest known periods. No secondary eclipses are seen. The ∼0.4 mag eclipses that last about 5 months are much too deep to be produced by a stellar companion. We propose instead that the companion is surrounded by a large disc that is at least 1.5 au in diameter but is likely larger. We predict the centre of the next eclipse will occur on New Year’s Day, 2029.

First detection of AlF line emission towards M-type AGB stars

The nucleosynthesis production of fluorine (F) is still a matter of debate. Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are one of the main candidates for F production. However, their contribution to the total F budget is not fully known due to the lack of observations. In this paper, we report the detection of aluminium monofluoride (AlF) line emission, one of the two main carriers of F in the gas-phase in the outflow of evolved stars, towards five nearby oxygen-rich (M-type) AGB stars. We studied the Atacama large millimetre/sub-millimetre array (ALMA) observations of AlF (v = 0, J = 4—3, 9–8, 10–9, and 15–14) and (v = 1, J = 7–6) line emission towards o Ceti, and (v = 0, J = 7–6 and 15–14) lines towards R Leo. We also report a tentative detection of AlF (v = 0, J = 7–6) line in IK Tau, (v = 0, J = 15–14) line towards R Dor, and (v = 0, J = 7–6 and J = 15–14) lines in W Hya. From spatially resolved observations, we estimated the AlF emitting region with a radius ~11R⋆ for o Ceti and ~9R⋆ for R Leo. From population diagram analysis, we report the AlF column densities of ~5.8 × 1015 cm−2 and ~3 × 1015 cm−2 for o Ceti and R Leo, respectively, within these regions. For o Ceti, we used the C18O (v = 0, J = 3–2) observations to estimate the H2 column density of the emitting region. We found a fractional abundance of fAIF/H2 ~ (2.5 ± 1.7) × 10−8. This gives a lower limit on the F budget in o Ceti and is compatible with the solar F budget fF/H2 = (5 ± 2) × 10−8. For R Leo, a fractional abundance fAIF/H2 = (1.2 ± 0.5) × 10−8 is estimated. For other sources, we cannot precisely determine the emitting region based on the available data. Assuming an emitting region with a radius of ~11R⋆ and the rotational temperatures derived for o Ceti and R Leo, we crudely approximated the AlF column density to be ~(1.2−1.5) × 1015 cm−2 in W Hya, ~(2.5−3.0) × 1014 cm−2 in R Dor, and ~(0.6−1.0) × 1016 cm−2 in IK Tau. These result in fractional abundances within a range of fAIF/H2 ~ (0.1 − 4) × 10−8 in W Hya, R Dor, and IK Tau.

ATOMIUM: The astounding complexity of the near circumstellar environment of the M-type AGB star R Hydrae

Evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars are known to shed their gaseous envelope into a large, dusty, molecule-rich circumstellar nebula which typically develops a high degree of structural complexity. Most of the large-scale, spatially correlated structures in the nebula are thought to originate from the interaction of the stellar wind with a companion. As part of the ATOMIUMlarge programme, we observed the M-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star R Hydrae with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The morphology of the inner wind of R Hya, which has a known companion at ∼3500 au, was determined from maps of CO and SiO obtained at high angular resolution. A map of the CO emission reveals a multi-layered structure consisting of a large elliptical feature at an angular scale of ∼10″ that is oriented along the north–south axis. The wind morphology within the elliptical feature is dominated by two hollow bubbles. The bubbles are on opposite sides of the AGB star and lie along an axis with a position angle of ∼115°. Both bubbles are offset from the central star, and their appearance in the SiO channel maps indicates that they might be shock waves travelling through the AGB wind. An estimate of the dynamical age of the bubbles yields an age of the order of 100 yr, which is in agreement with the previously proposed elapsed time since the star last underwent a thermal pulse. When the CO and SiO emission is examined on subarcsecond angular scales, there is evidence for an inclined, differentially rotating equatorial density enhancement, strongly suggesting the presence of a second nearby companion. The position angle of the major axis of this disc is ∼70° in the plane of the sky. We tentatively estimate that a lower limit on the mass of the nearby companion is ∼0.65 M⊙on the basis of the highest measured speeds in the disc and the location of its inner rim at ∼6 au from the AGB star.

Modelling long-period variables – II. Fundamental mode pulsation in the non-linear regime

ABSTRACT Long-period variability in luminous red giants has several promising applications, all of which require models able to accurately predict pulsation periods. Linear pulsation models have proven successful in reproducing the observed periods of overtone modes in evolved red giants, but they fail to accurately predict their fundamental mode (FM) periods. Here, we use a 1D hydrodynamic code to investigate the long-period variability of M-type asymptotic giant branch stars in the non-linear regime. We examine the period and stability of low-order radial pulsation modes as a function of mass and radius, and find overtone mode periods in complete agreement with predictions from linear pulsation models. In contrast, non-linear models predict an earlier onset of dominant FM pulsation, and shorter periods at large radii. Both features lead to a substantially better agreement with observations that we verify against OGLE and Gaia data for the Magellanic Clouds. We provide simple analytical relations describing the non-linear FM period–mass–radius relation. Differences with respect to linear predictions originate from the readjustment of the envelope structure induced by large-amplitude pulsation. We investigate the impact of turbulent viscosity on linear and non-linear pulsation, and probe possible effects of varying metallicity and carbon abundance.

A detailed view on the circumstellar environment of the M-type AGB star EP Aquarii

Cool evolved stars are known to be significant contributors to the enrichment of the interstellar medium through their dense and dusty stellar winds. High resolution observations of these outflows have shown them to possess high degrees of morphological complexity. We observed the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star EP Aquarii with ALMA in band 6 and VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL in four filters the visible. Both instruments had an angular resolution of 0.025″. These are follow-up observations to the lower-resolution 2016 ALMA analysis of EP Aquarii, which revealed that its wind possesses a nearly face-on, spiral-harbouring equatorial density enhancement, with a nearly pole-on bi-conical outflow. At the base of the spiral, the SiO emission revealed a distinct emission void approximately 0.4″ to the west of the continuum brightness peak, which was proposed to be linked to the presence of a companion. The new ALMA data better resolve the inner wind and reveal that its morphology as observed in CO is consistent with hydrodynamical companion-induced perturbations. Assuming that photodissociation by the UV-field of the companion is responsible for the emission void in SiO, we deduced the spectral properties of the tentative companion from the size of the hole. We conclude that the most probable companion candidate is a white dwarf with a mass between 0.65 and 0.8 M⊙, though a solar-like companion could not be definitively excluded. The radial SiO emission shows periodic, low-amplitude perturbations. We tentatively propose that they could be the consequence of the interaction of the AGB wind with another much closer low-mass companion. The polarised SPHERE/ZIMPOL data show a circular signal surrounding the AGB star with a radius of ∼0.1″. Decreased signal along a PA of 138° suggests that the dust is confined to an inclined ring-like structure, consistent with the previously determined wind morphology.

The surprisingly carbon-rich environment of the S-type star W Aql,

Context. W Aql is an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star with an atmospheric elemental abundance ratio C/O ≈ 0.98. It has previously been reported to have circumstellar molecular abundances intermediate between those of M-type and C-type AGB stars, which respectively have C/O < 1 and C/O > 1. This intermediate status is considered typical for S-type stars, although our understanding of the chemical content of their circumstellar envelopes is currently rather limited. Aims. We aim to assess the reported intermediate status of W Aql by analysing the line emission of molecules that have never before been observed towards this star. Methods. We performed observations in the frequency range 159−268 GHz with the SEPIA/B5 and PI230 instruments on the APEX telescope. We made abundance estimates through direct comparison to available spectra towards a number of well-studied AGB stars and based on rotational diagram analysis in the case of one molecule. Results. From a compilation of our abundance estimates and those found in the literature for two M-type (R Dor, IK Tau), two S-type (χ Cyg, W Aql), and two C-type stars (V Aql, IRC +10 216), we conclude that the circumstellar environment of W Aql appears considerably closer to that of a C-type AGB star than to that of an M-type AGB star. In particular, we detect emission from C2H, SiC2, SiN, and HC3N, molecules previously only detected towards the circumstellar environment of C-type stars. This conclusion, based on the chemistry of the gaseous component of the circumstellar environment, is further supported by reports in the literature on the presence of atmospheric molecular bands and spectral features of dust species which are typical for C-type AGB stars. Although our observations mainly trace species in the outer regions of the circumstellar environment, our conclusion matches closely that based on recent chemical equilibrium models for the inner wind of S-type stars: the atmospheric and circumstellar chemistry of S-type stars likely resembles that of C-type AGB stars much more closely than that of M-type AGB stars. Conclusions. Further observational investigation of the gaseous circumstellar chemistry of S-type stars is required to characterise its dependence on the atmospheric C/O. Non-equilibrium chemical models of the circumstellar environment of AGB stars need to address the particular class of S-type stars and the chemical variety that is induced by the range in atmospheric C/O.

DEATHSTAR: Nearby AGB stars with the Atacama Compact Array

Context. This is the first publication from the DEATHSTAR project. The overall goal of the project is to reduce the uncertainties of the observational estimates of mass-loss rates from evolved stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). Aim. The aim in this first publication is to constrain the sizes of the 12CO emitting region from the circumstellar envelopes around 42 mostly southern AGB stars, of which 21 are M-type and 21 are C-type, using the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) at the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The symmetry of the outflows is also investigated. Methods. Line emission from 12CO J = 2→1 and 3→2 from all of the sources were mapped using the ACA. In this initial analysis, the emission distribution was fit to a Gaussian distribution in the uv-plane. A detailed radiative transfer analysis will be presented in a future publication. The major and minor axis of the best-fit Gaussian at the line center velocity of the 12CO J = 2→1 emission gives a first indication of the size of the emitting region. Furthermore, the fitting results, such as the Gaussian major and minor axis, center position, and the goodness of fit across both lines, constrain the symmetry of the emission distribution. For a subsample of sources, the measured emission distribution is compared to predictions from previous best-fit radiative transfer modeling results. Results. We find that the CO envelope sizes are, in general, larger for C-type than for M-type AGB stars, which is as expected if the CO/H2 ratio is larger in C-type stars. Furthermore, the measurements show a relation between the measured (Gaussian) 12CO J = 2→1 size and circumstellar density that, while in broad agreement with photodissociation calculations, reveals large scatter and some systematic differences between the different stellar types. For lower mass-loss-rate irregular and semi-regular variables of both M- and C-type AGB stars, the 12CO J = 2→1 size appears to be independent of the ratio of the mass-loss rate to outflow velocity, which is a measure of circumstellar density. For the higher mass-loss-rate Mira stars, the 12CO J = 2→1 size clearly increases with circumstellar density, with larger sizes for the higher CO-abundance C-type stars. The M-type stars appear to be consistently smaller than predicted from photodissociation theory. The majority of the sources have CO envelope sizes that are consistent with a spherically symmetric, smooth outflow, at least on larger scales. For about a third of the sources, indications of strong asymmetries are detected. This is consistent with what was found in previous interferometric investigations of northern sources. Smaller scale asymmetries are found in a larger fraction of sources. Conclusions. These results for CO envelope radii and shapes can be used to constrain detailed radiative transfer modeling of the same stars so as to determine mass-loss rates that are independent of photodissociation models. For a large fraction of the sources, observations at higher spatial resolution will be necessary to deduce the nature and origin of the complex circumstellar dynamics revealed by our ACA observations.

An extensive grid of DARWIN models for M-type AGB stars

Context. The stellar winds of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are commonly attributed to radiation pressure on dust grains, formed in the wake of shock waves that arise in the stellar atmospheres. The mass loss due to these outflows is substantial, and modelling the dynamical properties of the winds is essential both for studies of individual stars and for understanding the evolution of stellar populations with low to intermediate mass. Aims. The purpose of this work is to present an extensive grid of dynamical atmosphere and wind models for M-type AGB stars, covering a wide range of relevant stellar parameters. Methods. We used the DARWIN code, which includes frequency-dependent radiation-hydrodynamics and a time-dependent description of dust condensation and evaporation, to simulate the dynamical atmosphere. The wind-driving mechanism is photon scattering on submicron-sized Mg2SiO4 grains. The grid consists of ~4000 models, with luminosities from L⋆ = 890 L⊙ to L⋆ = 40 000 L⊙ and effective temperatures from 2200 to 3400 K. For the first time different current stellar masses are explored with M-type DARWIN models, ranging from 0.75 M⊙ to 3 M⊙. The modelling results are radial atmospheric structures, dynamical properties such as mass-loss rates and wind velocities, and dust properties (e.g. grain sizes, dust-to-gas ratios, and degree of condensed Si). Results. We find that the mass-loss rates of the models correlate strongly with luminosity. They also correlate with the ratio L*∕M*: increasing L*∕M* by an order of magnitude increases the mass-loss rates by about three orders of magnitude, which may naturally create a superwind regime in evolution models. There is, however, no discernible trend of mass-loss rate with effective temperature, in contrast to what is found for C-type AGB stars. We also find that the mass-loss rates level off at luminosities higher than ~14 000 L⊙, and consequently at pulsation periods longer than ~800 days. The final grain radii range from 0.25 to 0.6 μm. The amount of condensed Si is typically between 10 and 40%, with gas-to-dust mass ratios between 500 and 4000.

Interferometric observations of SiO thermal emission in the inner wind of M-type AGB stars IK Tauri and IRC+10011.

Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars go through a process of strong mass loss that involves pulsations of the atmosphere, which extends to a region in which the conditions are adequate for dust grains to form. Radiation pressure acts on these grains which, coupled to the gas, drive a massive outflow. The details of this process are not clear, including which molecules are involved in the condensation of dust grains. We seek to study the role of the SiO molecule in the process of dust formation and mass loss in M-type AGB stars. Using the IRAM NOEMA interferometer we observed the 28SiO and 29SiO J = 3 - 2, v = 0 emission from the inner circumstellar envelope of the evolved stars IK Tau and IRC+10011. We computed azimuthally averaged emission profiles to compare the observations to models using a molecular excitation and ray-tracing code for SiO thermal emission. We observe circular symmetry in the emission distribution. We also find that the source diameter varies only marginally with radial velocity, which is not the expected behaviour for envelopes expanding at an almost constant velocity. The adopted density, velocity, and abundance laws, together with the mass-loss rate, which best fit the observations, give us information concerning the chemical behaviour of the SiO molecule and its role in the dust formation process. The results indicate that there is a strong coupling between the depletion of gas-phase SiO and gas acceleration in the inner envelope. This could be explained by the condensation of SiO into dust grains.

Atmospheres and wind properties of non-spherical AGB stars

Context. The wind-driving mechanism of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is commonly attributed to a two-step process: first, gas in the stellar atmosphere is levitated by shockwaves caused by stellar pulsation, then accelerated outwards by radiative pressure on newly formed dust, inducing a wind. Dynamical modelling of such winds usually assumes a spherically symmetric star. Aims. We explore the potential consequences of complex stellar surface structures, as predicted by three-dimensional (3D) star-in-a-box modelling of M-type AGB stars, on the resulting wind properties with the aim to improve the current wind models. Methods. Two different modelling approaches are used; the CO5BOLD 3D star-in-a-box code to simulate the convective, pulsating interior and lower atmosphere of the star, and the DARWIN one-dimensional (1D) code to describe the dynamical atmosphere where the wind is accelerated. The gas dynamics of the inner atmosphere region at distances of R ∼ 1−2 R⋆, which both modelling approaches simulate, are compared. Dynamical properties and luminosity variations derived from CO5BOLD interior models are used as input for the inner boundary in DARWIN wind models in order to emulate the effects of giant convection cells and pulsation, and explore their influence on the dynamical properties. Results. The CO5BOLD models are inherently anisotropic, with non-uniform shock fronts and varying luminosity amplitudes, in contrast to the spherically symmetrical DARWIN wind models. DARWIN wind models with CO5BOLD-derived inner boundary conditions produced wind velocities and mass-loss rates comparable to the standard DARWIN models, however the winds show large density variations on time-scales of 10–20 yr. Conclusions. The method outlined in this paper derives pulsation properties from the 3D star-in-a-box CO5BOLD models, to be used in the DARWIN models. If the current grid of CO5BOLD models is extended, it will be possible to construct extensive DARWIN grids with inner boundary conditions derived from 3D interior modelling of convection and pulsation, and avoid the free parameters of the current approach.

The evolution of DARWIN: current status of wind models for AGB stars

AbstractThe slow, dense winds observed in evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are usually attributed to a combination of dust formation in the dynamical inner atmosphere of these stars and momentum transfer from stellar photons interacting with the newly formed dust particles. Wind models calculated with the DARWIN code, using this mass-loss scenario, have successfully produced outflows with dynamical and photometric properties compatible with observations, for both C-type and M-type AGB stars. Presented here is an overview of the DARWIN models currently available and what output these models produce, as well as future plans.

Pulsation-induced atmospheric dynamics in M-type AGB stars

Wind-driving in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is commonly attributed to a two-step process. First, matter in the stellar atmosphere is levitated by shock waves, induced by stellar pulsation, and second, this matter is accelerated by radiation pressure on dust, resulting in a wind. In dynamical atmosphere and wind models the effects of the stellar pulsation are often simulated by a simplistic prescription at the inner boundary. We test a sample of dynamical models for M-type AGB stars, for which we kept the stellar parameters fixed to values characteristic of a typical Mira variable but varied the inner boundary condition. The aim was to evaluate the effect on the resulting atmosphere structure and wind properties. The results of the models are compared to observed mass-loss rates and wind velocities, photometry, and radial velocity curves, and to results from 1D radial pulsation models. Dynamical atmosphere models are calculated, using the DARWIN code for different combinations of photospheric velocities and luminosity variations. The inner boundary is changed by introducing an offset between maximum expansion of the stellar surface and the luminosity and/or by using an asymmetric shape for the luminosity variation. Models that resulted in realistic wind velocities and mass-loss rates, when compared to observations, also produced realistic photometric variations. For the models to also reproduce the characteristic radial velocity curve present in Mira stars (derived from CO $\Delta v = 3$ lines), an overall phase shift of 0.2 between the maxima of the luminosity and radial variation had to be introduced. We find that a group of models with different boundary conditions (29 models, including the model with standard boundary conditions) results in realistic velocities and mass-loss rates, and in photometric variations.

Modelling polarized light from dust shells surrounding asymptotic giant branch stars

Winds of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are commonly assumed to be driven by radiative acceleration of dust grains. For M-type AGB stars, the nature of the wind-driving dust species has been a matter of intense debate. A proposed source of the radiation pressure triggering the outflows is photon scattering on Fe-free silicate grains. This wind-driving mechanism requires grain radii of about 0.1 - 1 micron in order to make the dust particles efficient at scattering radiation around the stellar flux maximum. Grain size is therefore an important parameter for understanding the physics behind the winds of M-type AGB stars. We seek to investigate the diagnostic potential of scattered polarized light for determining dust grain sizes. We have developed a new tool for computing synthetic images of scattered light in dust and gas shells around AGB stars, which can be applied to detailed models of dynamical atmospheres and dust-driven winds. We present maps of polarized light using dynamical models computed with the DARWIN code. The synthetic images clearly show that the intensity of the polarized light, the position of the inner edge of the dust shell, and the size of the dust grains near the inner edge are all changing with the luminosity phase. Non-spherical structures in the dust shells can also have an impact on the polarized light. We simulate this effect by combining different pulsation phases into a single 3D structure before computing synthetic images. An asymmetry of the circumstellar envelope can create a net polarization, which can be used as diagnostics for the grain size. The ratio between the size of the scattering particles and the observed wavelength determines at what wavelengths net polarization switches direction. If observed, this can be used to constrain average particle sizes.

Measuring surface magnetic fields of red supergiant stars

Context.Red supergiant (RSG) stars are very massive cool evolved stars. Recently, a weak magnetic field was measured at the surface ofαOri and this is so far the only M-type supergiant for which a direct detection of a surface magnetic field has been reported.Aims.By extending the search for surface magnetic field in a sample of late-type supergiants, we want to determine whether the surface magnetic field detected onαOri is a common feature among the M-type supergiants.Methods.With the spectropolarimeter Narval at TélescopeBernard-Lyotwe undertook a search for surface magnetic fields in a sample of cool supergiant stars, and we analysed circular polarisation spectra using the least-squares deconvolution technique.Results.We detect weak Zeeman signatures of stellar origin in the targets CE Tau,α1Her andμCep. For the latter star, we also show that cross-talk from the strong linear polarisation signals detected on this star must be taken into account. For CE Tau andμCep, the longitudinal component of the detected surface fields is at the Gauss-level, such as inαOri. We measured a longitudinal field almost an order of magnitude stronger forα1Her. We also report variability of the longitudinal magnetic field of CE Tau andα1Her, with changes in good agreement with the typical atmospheric dynamics time-scales. We also report a non-detection of magnetic field at the surface of the yellow supergiant starρCas.Conclusions.The two RSG stars of our sample, CE Tau andμCep, display magnetic fields very similar to that ofαOri. The non-detection of a magnetic field on the post-RSG starρCas suggests that the magnetic field disappears, or at least becomes undetectable with present methods, at later evolutionary stages. Our analysis ofα1Her supports the proposed reclassification of the star as an M-type asymptotic giant branch star.

Sulphur molecules in the circumstellar envelopes of M-type AGB stars

The sulphur compounds SO and SO$_2$ have not been widely studied in the circumstellar envelopes of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. By presenting and modelling a large number of SO and SO$_2$ lines in the low mass-loss rate M-type AGB star R Dor, and modelling the available lines of those molecules in a further four M-type AGB stars, we aim to determine their circumstellar abundances and distributions. We use a detailed radiative transfer analysis based on the accelerated lambda iteration method to model circumstellar SO and SO$_2$ line emission and molecular data files for both SO and SO$_2$ that are more extensive than those previously available. Using 17 SO lines and 98 SO2 lines to constrain our models for R Dor, we find an SO abundance of 6.7x10$^{-6}$ and an SO$_2$ abundance of 5x10$^{-6}$ with both species having high abundances close to the star. We also modelled $^{34}$SO and found an abundance of 3.1x10$^{-7}$, giving an $^{32}$SO/$^{34}$SO ratio of 21.6. We derive similar results for the circumstellar SO and SO$_2$ abundances and their distributions for the low mass-loss rate object W Hya. For these stars, the circumstellar SO and SO$_2$ abundances are much higher than predicted by chemical models and these two species may account for all available sulphur. For the higher mass-loss rate stars, we find shell-like SO distributions with peak abundances that decrease and peak abundance radii that increase with increasing mass-loss rate. The positions of the peak SO abundance agree very well with the photodissociation radii of H$_2$O. We find evidence that SO is most likely through the photodissociation of H$_2$O and the subsequent reaction between S and OH. The S-bearing parent molecule appears not to be H$_2$S. The SO$_2$ models suggest an origin close to the star for this species, also disagreeing with current chemical models.

Exploring wind-driving dust species in cool luminous giants

Stellar winds observed in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are usually attributed to a combination of stellar pulsations and radiation pressure on dust. Shock waves triggered by pulsations propagate through the atmosphere, compressing the gas and lifting it to cooler regions, which create favourable conditions for grain growth. If sufficient radiative acceleration is exerted on the newly formed grains through absorption or scattering of stellar photons, an outflow can be triggered. Strong candidates for wind-driving dust species in M-type AGB stars are magnesium silicates (Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ and MgSiO$_3$). Such grains can form close to the stellar surface, they consist of abundant materials and, if they grow to sizes comparable to the wavelength of the stellar flux maximum, they experience strong acceleration by photon scattering. We use a frequency-dependent radiation-hydrodynamics code with a detailed description for the growth of Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ grains to calculate the first extensive set of time-dependent wind models for M-type AGB stars. The resulting wind properties, visual and near-IR photometry and mid-IR spectra are compared with observations.We show that the models can produce outflows for a wide range of stellar parameters. We also demonstrate that they reproduce observed mass-loss rates and wind velocities, as well as visual and near-IR photometry. However, the current models do not show the characteristic silicate features at 10 and 18 $\mu$m as a result of the cool temperature of Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ grains in the wind. Including a small amount of Fe in the grains further out in the circumstellar envelope will increase the grain temperature and result in pronounced silicate features, without significantly affecting the photometry in the visual and near-IR wavelength regions.

IS THERE A METALLICITY CEILING TO FORM CARBON STARS?—A NOVEL TECHNIQUE REVEALS A SCARCITY OF C STARS IN THE INNER M31 DISK

We use medium-band near-infrared (NIR) Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 photometry with model NIR spectra of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars to develop a new tool for efficiently distinguishing carbon-rich (C-type) AGB stars from oxygen-rich (M-type) AGB stars in galaxies at the edge of and outside the Local Group. We present the results of a test of this method on a region of the inner disk of M31, where we find a surprising lack of C stars, contrary to the findings of previous C star searches in other regions of M31. We find only 1 candidate C star (plus up to 6 additional, less certain C stars candidates), resulting in an extremely low ratio of C to M stars (C/M = (3.3(+20,-0.1))x10^-4) that is 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than other C/M estimates in M31. The low C/M ratio is likely due to the high metallicity in this region which impedes stars from achieving C/O > 1 in their atmospheres. These observations provide stringent constraints evolutionary models of metal-rich AGB stars and suggest that there is a metallicity threshold above which M stars are unable to make the transition to C stars, dramatically affecting AGB mass loss and dust production and, consequently, the observed global properties of metal-rich galaxies.

Exploring wind-driving dust species in cool luminous giants

The heavy mass loss observed in evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is usually attributed to a two-stage process: atmospheric levitation by pulsation-induced shock waves, followed by radiative acceleration of newly formed dust grains. The dust transfers momentum to the surrounding gas through collisions and thereby triggers a general outflow. Radiation-hydrodynamical models of M-type AGB stars suggest that these winds can be driven by photon scattering -- in contrast to absorption -- on Fe-free silicate grains of sizes 0.1--1\,$\mu$m. In this paper we study photometric constraints for wind-driving dust species in M-type AGB stars, as part of an ongoing effort to identify likely candidates among the grain materials observed in circumstellar envelopes. To investigate the scenario of stellar winds driven by photon scattering on dust, and to explore how different optical and chemical properties of wind-driving dust species affect photometry we focus on two sets of dynamical models atmospheres: (i) models using a detailed description for the growth of Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ grains, taking into account both scattering and absorption cross-sections when calculating the radiative acceleration, and (ii) models using a parameterized dust description, constructed to represent different chemical and optical dust properties. By comparing synthetic photometry from these two sets of models to observations of M-type AGB stars we can provide constraints on the properties of wind-driving dust species. Photometry from wind models with a detailed description for the growth of Mg$_2$SiO$_4$ grains reproduces well both the values and the time-dependent behavior of observations of M-type AGB stars, providing further support for the scenario of winds driven by photon scattering on dust.
