The great escape: understanding the connection between Ly α emission and LyC escape in simulated JWST analogues

ABSTRACT Constraining the escape fraction of Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons from high-redshift galaxies is crucial to understanding reionization. Recent observations have demonstrated that various characteristics of the Ly$\, \alpha$ emission line correlate with the inferred LyC escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm LyC}$) of low-redshift galaxies. Using a data set of 9600 mock Ly$\, \alpha$ spectra of star-forming galaxies at $4.64 \le z \le 6$ from the SPHINX$^{20}$ cosmological radiation hydrodynamical simulation, we study the physics controlling the escape of Ly$\, \alpha$ and LyC photons. We find that our mock Ly$\, \alpha$ observations are representative of high-redshift observations and that typical observational methods tend to overpredict the Ly$\, \alpha$ escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Ly\, \alpha }$) by as much as 2 dex. We investigate the correlations between $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm LyC}$ and $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Ly\, \alpha }$, Ly$\, \alpha$ equivalent width ($W_{\lambda }({\rm Ly\, \alpha })$), peak separation ($v_{\rm sep}$), central escape fraction ($f_{\rm cen}$), and red peak asymmetry ($A_f^{\rm red}$). We find that $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm Ly\, \alpha }$ and $f_{\rm cen}$ are good diagnostics for LyC leakage, selecting for galaxies with lower neutral gas densities and less UV attenuation that have recently experienced supernova feedback. In contrast, $W_{\lambda }({\rm Ly\, \alpha })$ and $v_{\rm sep}$ are found to be necessary but insufficient diagnostics, while $A_f^{\rm red}$ carries little information. Finally, we use stacks of Ly$\, \alpha$, H$\, \alpha$, and F150W mock surface brightness profiles to find that galaxies with high $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm LyC}$ tend to have less extended Ly$\, \alpha$ and F150W haloes but larger H$\, \alpha$ haloes than their non-leaking counterparts. This confirms that Ly$\, \alpha$ spectral profiles and surface brightness morphology can be used to better understand the escape of LyC photons from galaxies during the epoch of reionization.

New insight on the nature of cosmic reionizers from the CEERS survey

The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) began when galaxies grew in abundance and luminosity, so their escaping Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation started ionizing the surrounding neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). Despite significant recent progress, the nature and role of cosmic reionizers are still unclear: in order to define them, it would be necessary to directly measure their LyC escape fraction (fesc). However, this is impossible during the EoR due to the opacity of the IGM. Consequently, many efforts at low and intermediate redshift have been made to determine measurable indirect indicators in high-redshift galaxies so that their fesc can be predicted. This work presents the analysis of the indirect indicators of 62 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies at 6 ≤ z ≤ 9 from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey, combined with 12 sources with public data from other JWST-ERS campaigns. From the NIRCam and NIRSpec observations, we measured their physical and spectroscopic properties. We discovered that on average 6 < z < 9 star-forming galaxies are compact in the rest-frame UV (re ∼ 0.4 kpc), are blue sources (UV-β slope ∼ − 2.17), and have a predicted fesc of about 0.13. A comparison of our results to models and predictions as well as an estimation of the ionizing budget suggests that low-mass galaxies with UV magnitudes fainter than M1500 = −18 that we currently do not characterize with JWST observations probably played a key role in the process of reionization.

Linking Mg ii and [O ii] spatial distribution to ionizing photon escape in confirmed LyC leakers and non-leakers

The geometry of the neutral gas in and around galaxies is a key regulator of the escape of ionizing photons. We present the first statistical study aimed at linking the neutral and ionized gas distributions to the Lyman continuum (LyC) escape fraction ( in a sample of 22 confirmed LyC leakers and non-leakers at $z using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (Keck/KCWI) and the Low Resolution Spectrograph 2 (HET/LRS2). Our integral field unit data enable the detection of neutral and low-ionization gas, as traced by Mg ii and ionized gas, as traced by O ii extending beyond the stellar continuum for seven and ten objects, respectively. All but one object with extended Mg ii emission also show extended O ii emission; in this case Mg ii emission is always more extended than O ii by a factor 1.2 on average. Most of the galaxies with extended emission are non or weak LyC leakers ( < 5<!PCT!>), but we find a large diversity of neutral and low-ionization gas configurations around these weakly LyC-emitting galaxies. Conversely, the strongest leakers ( > 5<!PCT!>) appear uniformly compact in both Mg ii and O ii with exponential scale lengths lesssim 1 kpc. Most are unresolved at the resolution of our data. We also find a trend between and the spatial offsets of the nebular gas and the stellar continuum emission. Moreover, we find significant anticorrelations between the spatial extent of the neutral and/or low-ionization gas and the O iii O ii ratio, and Hbeta equivalent width, as well as positive correlations with metallicity and UV size, suggesting that galaxies with more compact neutral and/or low-ionization gas sizes are more highly ionized. The observations suggest that strong LyC emitters do not have extended neutral and/or low-ionization gas halos and ionizing photons may be emitted in many directions. Combined with high ionization diagnostics, we propose that the Mg ii and potentially O ii spatial compactness are indirect indicators of LyC emitting galaxies at high redshift.

JADES: The production and escape of ionizing photons from faint Lyman-alpha emitters in the epoch of reionization

We present the properties of 17 faint Lyman-α emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z > 5.8 from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) spectroscopic data in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field/GOODS-S. These LAEs span a redshift range z ≈ 5.8 − 8.0 and a UV magnitude range MUV ≈ −17 to −20.6, with the Lyα equivalent width (EW) in the range ≈25 − 350 Å. The detection of other rest-optical emission lines in the spectra of these LAEs enables the determination of accurate systemic redshifts and Lyα velocity offsets, as well as the physical and chemical composition of their stars and interstellar media. These faint LAEs are consistent with metal-poor systems with high ionization parameters, similar to the general galaxy population at z > 6. We measured an average ionizing photon production efficiency, log(ξion/erg−1 Hz) ≈ 25.57 across our LAEs, which does not evolve strongly with redshift. We report an anti-correlation between the Lyα escape fraction and the velocity offset from systemic redshift, consistent with model expectations. We further find that the strength and velocity offset of Lyα are neither correlated with galaxy spectroscopic properties nor with ξion. We find a decrease in Lyα escape fractions with redshift, indicative of decreasing sizes of ionized bubbles around LAEs at high redshifts. We used a range of galaxy properties to predict Lyman continuum escape fractions for our LAEs, finding that the ionizing photon output into the intergalactic medium from our LAEs remains roughly constant across the observed Lyα EW, showing a mild increase at fainter UV magnitudes and at higher redshifts. We derived correlations between the ionizing photon output from LAEs and their UV magnitudes, Lyα strengths and redshifts, which can be used to constrain the ionizing photon contribution of LAEs at z > 6 towards cosmic reionization.

Rest-frame UV Colors for Faint Galaxies at z ∼ 9–16 with the JWST NGDEEP Survey

We present measurements of the rest-frame UV spectral slope, β, for a sample of 36 faint star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 9–16 discovered in one of the deepest JWST NIRCam surveys to date, the Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public Survey. We use robust photometric measurements for UV-faint galaxies (down to M UV ∼ −16), originally published in Leung et al., and measure values of the UV spectral slope via photometric power-law fitting to both the observed photometry and stellar population models obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with Bagpipes. We obtain a median and 68% confidence interval for β from photometric power-law fitting of βPL=−2.7−0.5+0.5 and from SED fitting, βSED=−2.3−0.1+0.2 for the full sample. We show that when only two to three photometric detections are available, SED fitting has a lower scatter and reduced biases than photometric power-law fitting. We quantify this bias and find that after correction the median βSED,corr=−2.5−0.2+0.2 . We measure physical properties for our galaxies with Bagpipes and find that our faint ( MUV=−18.1−0.9+0.7 ) sample is low in mass ( log[M*/M⊙]=7.7−0.5+0.5 ), fairly dust-poor ( Av=0.1−0.1+0.2 mag), and modestly young ( log[age]=7.8−0.8+0.2 yr) with a median star formation rate of log(SFR)=−0.3−0.4+0.4M⊙yr−1 . We find no strong evidence for ultrablue UV spectral slopes (β ∼ −3) within our sample, as would be expected for exotically metal-poor (Z/Z ⊙ < 10−3) stellar populations with very high Lyman continuum escape fractions. Our observations are consistent with model predictions that galaxies of these stellar masses at z ∼ 9–16 should have only modestly low metallicities (Z/Z ⊙ ∼ 0.1–0.2).

Lyman Continuum Emission from Active Galactic Nuclei at 2.3 ≲ z ≲ 3.7 in the UVCANDELS Fields

We present the results of our search for Lyman continuum (LyC)-emitting (weak) active galactic nuclei (AGN) at redshifts 2.3 ≲ z ≲ 4.9 from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) F275W observations in the Ultraviolet Imaging of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (UVCANDELS) fields. We also include LyC emission from AGN using HST WFC3 F225W, F275W, and F336W imaging found in Early Release Science (ERS) and Hubble Deep UV Legacy Survey data. We performed exhaustive queries of the Vizier database to locate AGN with high-quality spectroscopic redshifts. In total, we found 51 AGN that met our criteria within the UVCANDELS and ERS footprints. Out of these 51, we find 12 AGN that had ≥4σ detected LyC flux in the WFC3/UVIS images. Using a wide variety of space-based plus ground-based data, ranging from X-ray to radio wavelengths, we fit the multiwavelength photometric data of each AGN to a CIGALE spectral energy distribution (SED) using AGN models and correlate various SED parameters to the LyC flux. Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests of the SED parameter distributions for the LyC-detected and nondetected AGN showed they are likely not distinct samples. However, we find that the X-ray luminosity, star formation onset age, and disk luminosity show strong correlations relative to their emitted LyC flux. We also find strong correlations of the LyC flux to several dust parameters, i.e., polar and toroidal dust emission and 6 μm luminosity, and anticorrelations with metallicity and A FUV. We simulate the LyC escape fraction (f esc) using the CIGALE and intergalactic medium transmission models for the LyC-detected AGN and find an average f esc ≃ 18%, weighted by uncertainties. We stack the LyC fluxes of subsamples of AGN according to the wavelength continuum region in which they are detected and find no significant distinctions in their LyC emission, although our submillimeter-detected F336W sample (3.15 < z < 3.71) shows the brightest stacked LyC flux. These findings indicate that LyC production and escape in AGN are more complicated than the simple assumption of thermal emission and a 100% escape fraction. Further testing of AGN models with larger samples than presented here is needed.

Using Mg ii Doublet to Predict the Lyman Continuum Escape Fraction from 14 HETDEX Galaxies

Indirect diagnostics of Lyman continuum (LyC) escape are needed to constrain which sources reionized the universe. We used Mg ii to predict the LyC escape fraction () in 14 galaxies selected from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment solely based upon their Mg ii properties. Using the Low Resolution Spectrograph on HET, we identified 7 and 5 possible LyC leakers depending on the method, with ranging from 3% to 80%. Interestingly, our targets display diverse [O iii]/[O ii] ratios (O32), with strong inferred LyC candidates showing lower O32 values than previous confirmed LyC leaker samples. Additionally, a correlation between dust and was identified. Upcoming Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph LyC observations of our sample will test if Mg ii and dust are predictors of , providing insights for future JWST studies of high-redshift galaxies.

Lyα line profiles are a powerful probe of interstellar medium (ISM) structure, outflow speed, and Lyman-continuum escape fraction. In this paper, we present the Lyα line profiles of the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY, a sample rich in spectroscopic analogs of reionization-era galaxies. A large fraction of the spectra show a complex profile, consisting of a double-peaked Lyα emission profile in the bottom of a damped, Lyα absorption trough. Such profiles reveal an inhomogeneous ISM. We successfully fit the damped Lyα absorption and the Lyα emission profiles separately, but with complementary covering factors, a surprising result because this approach requires no Lyα exchange between high-N H i and low-N H i paths. The combined distribution of column densities is qualitatively similar to the bimodal distributions observed in numerical simulations. We find an inverse relation between Lyα peak separation and the [O iii]/[O ii] flux ratio, confirming that the covering fraction of Lyman-continuum-thin sightlines increases as the Lyα peak separation decreases. We combine measurements of Lyα peak separation and Lyα red peak asymmetry in a diagnostic diagram, which identifies six Lyman-continuum leakers in the COS Legacy Archive Spectrocopy SurveY (CLASSY) sample. We find a strong correlation between the Lyα trough velocity and the outflow velocity measured from interstellar absorption lines. We argue that greater vignetting of the blueshifted Lyα peak, relative to the redshifted peak, is the source of the well-known discrepancy between shell-model parameters and directly measured outflow properties. The CLASSY sample illustrates how scattering of Lyα photons outside the spectroscopic aperture reshapes Lyα profiles because the distances to these compact starbursts span a large range.

Small Region, Big Impact: Highly Anisotropic Lyman-continuum Escape from a Compact Starburst Region with Extreme Physical Properties

Extreme, young stellar populations are considered to be the primary contributor to cosmic reionization. How the Lyman continuum (LyC) escapes these galaxies remains highly elusive, and it is challenging to observe this process in actual LyC emitters without resolving the relevant physical scales. We investigate the Sunburst Arc, a strongly lensed LyC emitter at z = 2.37 that reveals an exceptionally small-scale (tens of parsecs) region of high LyC escape. The small (<100 pc) LyC-leaking region has extreme properties: a very blue UV slope (β = −2.9 ± 0.1), a high ionization state ([O iii] λ5007/[O ii] λ3727 = 11 ± 3 and [O iii] λ5007/Hβ = 6.8 ± 0.4), strong oxygen emission (EW([O iii]) = 1095 ± 40 Å), and a high Lyα escape fraction (0.3 ± 0.03), none of which are found in nonleaking regions of the galaxy. The leaking region’s UV slope is consistent with approximately “pure” stellar light that is minimally contaminated by the surrounding nebular continuum emission or extinguished by dust. These results suggest a highly anisotropic LyC escape process such that LyC is produced and escapes from a small, extreme starburst region where the stellar feedback from an ionizing star cluster creates one or more “pencil-beam” channels in the surrounding gas through which LyC can directly escape. Such anisotropic escape processes imply that random sight-line effects drive the significant scatters between measurements of galaxy properties and LyC escape fraction, and that strong lensing is a critical tool for resolving the processes that regulate the ionizing budget of galaxies for reionization.

Early Results from GLASS-JWST. XXII. Rest-frame UV–Optical Spectral Properties of Lyα Emitting Galaxies at 3 < z < 6

Lyα emission is possibly the best indirect diagnostic of Lyman continuum (LyC) escape since the conditions that favor the escape of Lyα photons are often the same that allow for the escape of LyC photons. In this work, we present the rest-frame UV–optical spectral characteristics of 11 Lyα emitting galaxies at 3 < z < 6—the redshift range that optimizes between intergalactic medium attenuation effects and temporal proximity to the epoch of reionization. From a combined analysis of JWST/NIRSpec and MUSE data, we present the Lyα escape fraction and study its correlation with other physical properties of galaxies that might facilitate Lyα escape. We find that our galaxies have low masses (80% of the sample with ), compact sizes (median R e ∼ 0.7 kpc), low dust content, moderate [O iii]/[O ii] flux ratios (mean ∼ 6.8 ± 1.2), and moderate Lyα escape fractions (mean 0.11). Our sample shows characteristics that are broadly consistent with low-redshift galaxies with Lyα emission, which are termed as “analogs” of the high-redshift population. We predict the LyC escape fraction in our sample to be low (0.03–0.07), although larger samples in the postreionization epoch are needed to confirm these trends.

Lyman continuum leaker candidates among highly ionised, low-redshift dwarf galaxies selected from He II

Context. Contemporary research suggests that the reionisation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) in the early Universe was predominantly realised by star-forming (proto-)galaxies (SFGs). Due to observational constraints, our knowledge on the origins of sufficient amounts of ionising Lyman continuum (LyC) photons and the mechanisms facilitating their transport into the IGM remains sparse. Recent efforts have thus focussed on the study of local analogues to these high-redshift objects. Aims. We aim to acquire a set of very low-redshift SFGs that exhibit signs of a hard radiation field being present. A subsequent analysis of their emission line properties is intended to shed light on how the conditions prevalent in these objects compare to those predicted to be present in early SFGs that are thought to be LyC emitters (LCEs). Methods. We used archival spectroscopic SDSS DR12 data to select a sample of low-redshift He II 4686 emitters and restricted it to a set of SFGs with an emission line diagnostic sensitive to the presence of an active galactic nucleus, which serves as our only selection criterion. We performed a population spectral synthesis with FADO to reconstruct these galaxies’ star-formation histories (SFHs). Utilising the spectroscopic information at hand, we constrained the predominant ionisation mechanisms in these galaxies and inferred information on interstellar medium (ISM) conditions relevant for the escape of LyC radiation. Results. Our final sample consists of eighteen ionised, metal-poor galaxies (IMPs). These low-mass (6.2 ≤ log(M⋆/M⊙) ≤ 8.8), low-metallicity (7.54 ≤ log(O/H) + 12 ≤ 8.13) dwarf galaxies appear to be predominantly ionised by stellar sources. We find large [OIII] 5007/[OII] 3727 ratios and [SII] 6717,6731/Hα deficiencies, which provide strong indications for these galaxies to be LCEs. At least 40% of these objects are candidates for featuring cosmologically significant LyC escape fractions ≳10%. The IMPs’ SFHs exhibit strong similarities and almost all galaxies appear to contain an old (&gt; 1 Gyr) stellar component, while also harbouring a young, two-stage (∼10 Myr and &lt; 1 Myr) starburst, which we speculate might be related to LyC escape. Conclusions. The properties of the compact emission line galaxies presented here align well with those observed in many local LCEs. In fact, our sample may prove as an extension to the rather small catalogue of local LCEs, as the extreme ISM conditions we find are assumed to facilitate LyC leakage. Notably, all of our eighteen candidates are significantly closer (z &lt; 0.1) than most established LCEs. If the inferred LyC photon loss is genuine, this demonstrates that selecting SFGs from He II 4686 is a powerful selection criterion in the search for LCEs.

Evidence for a Low Lyman Continuum Escape Fraction in Three Massive, Ultraviolet-bright Galaxies at z > 7

Although low-mass star-forming galaxies are the leading candidates of the reionization process, we cannot conclusively rule out high-mass star-forming galaxies as candidates. While most simulations indicate the former is the best candidate, some models suggest that at z ≥ 6 massive, UV-bright galaxies – “oligarchs” – account for at least 80% of the ionizing budget. To test this hypothesis, we target massive (), UV-bright (M UV ∼ −22) Lyα emitters at z > 7 in archival data, observed with similar resolution spectrographs (Very Large Telescope/X-shooter and Keck/MOSFIRE). To increase the reliability of our conclusions, we stack all spectra and obtain a deep-stacked spectrum of 24.75 hr. The stacked Lyα profile displays a clear asymmetric red peak and an absence of a blue peak. We additionally estimate the intrinsic stacked Lyα profile of our targets by correcting for intergalactic medium (IGM) transmission using a range of neutral hydrogen fractions, finding no significant change in the profile. We measure a velocity offset V red > 300 km s−1 and an asymmetry in our red peak A ∼ 3. Using various models and estimators, such as the peak separation, the asymmetry of the red peak, the ratio between Lyα and Hβ, and the β slope, we conclude that the escape fraction in these three UV-bright, massive (∼1010 M ⊙), z ≥ 7 galaxies is f esc(LyC) ≤ 10%.

The ultraviolet continuum slopes (β) of galaxies at z ≃ 8-16 from JWST and ground-based near-infrared imaging

ABSTRACT We study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes (β) of galaxies at redshifts 8 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 16 (〈z〉 = 10), using a combination of JWST ERO and ERS NIRCam imaging and ground-based near-infrared imaging of the COSMOS field. The combination of JWST and ground-based imaging provides a wide baseline in both redshift and absolute UV magnitude (−22.6 &amp;lt; MUV &amp;lt; −17.9), sufficient to allow a meaningful comparison to previous results at lower redshift. Using a power-law fitting technique, we find that our full sample (median MUV = −19.3 ± 1.3) returns an inverse-variance weighted mean value of 〈β〉 = −2.10 ± 0.05, with a corresponding median value of β = −2.29 ± 0.09. These values imply that the UV colours of galaxies at z &amp;gt; 8 are, on average, no bluer than the bluest galaxies in the local universe (e.g. NGC 1705; β = −2.46). We find evidence for a β − MUV relation, such that brighter UV galaxies display redder UV slopes ($\rm {d}\beta / \rm {d} M_{\rm UV} = -0.17 \pm 0.05$). Comparing to results at lower redshift, we find that the slope of our β − MUV relation is consistent with the slope observed at z ≃ 5 and that, at a given MUV, our 8 &amp;lt; z &amp;lt; 16 galaxies are bluer than their z ≃ 5 counterparts, with an inverse-variance weighted mean offset of 〈Δβ〉 = −0.38 ± 0.09. We do not find strong evidence that any objects in our sample display ultra-blue UV continuum slopes (i.e. β ≲ −3) that would require their UV emission to be dominated by ultra-young, dust-free stellar populations with high Lyman-continuum escape fractions. Comparing our results to the predictions of theoretical galaxy formation models, we find that the galaxies in our sample are consistent with the young, metal-poor, and moderately dust-reddened galaxies expected at z &amp;gt; 8.

Finding Peas in the Early Universe with JWST

The Early Release Observations (EROs) of JWST beautifully demonstrate the promise of JWST in characterizing the universe at Cosmic Dawn. We analyze the Near Infrared Spectrograph ERO spectra of three z ∼ 8 galaxies to determine their metallicities, gas temperatures, and ionization. These galaxies offer the first opportunity to understand the physical properties of Epoch-of-Reionization galaxies through detailed rest-optical emission-line spectroscopy. We show that these objects have metal abundances 6.9–8.3, based on both the T e method and on a recent calibration of the R 23 metallicity indicator. Since the spectra are some of the earliest science data from JWST, we compare several line ratios with values expected from robust physics, to validate our measurement procedures. We compare the abundances and emission-line ratios to a nearby sample of Green Pea galaxies—a population of nearby emission-line galaxies whose UV properties resemble Epoch-of-Reionization galaxies, and which often have large Lyman continuum escape fractions. The JWST data show striking further similarities between these high-redshift galaxies and nearby Green Peas. The z ∼ 8 galaxies span the metallicity range covered by Green Peas. They also show the compact morphology that is typical of emission-line-dominated galaxies at all redshifts. Based on these similarities with Green Peas, it is likely that these are the first rest-optical spectra of galaxies that are actively driving cosmological reionization.

Emission Line Galaxies in the SHARDS Hubble Frontier Fields. II. Limits on Lyman-continuum Escape Fractions of Lensed Emission Line Galaxies at Redshifts 2 < z < 3.5

We present an investigation of escape fractions of UV photons from a unique sample of lensed low-mass emission line–selected galaxies at z < 3.5 found in the SHARDS Hubble Frontier Fields medium-band survey. We have used this deep imaging survey to locate 42 relatively low-mass galaxies down to log (M */M ⊙) = 7 in the redshift range 2.4 < z < 3.5 that are candidate line emitters. Using deep multiband Hubble UVIS imaging, we investigate the flux of escaping ionizing photons from these systems, obtaining 1σ upper limits of f rel esc ∼ 7% for individual galaxies and <2% for stacked data. We measure potential escaping Lyman-continuum flux for two low-mass line emitters with values at and , both detected at the ∼3.2σ level. A detailed analysis of possible contamination reveals a <0.1% probability that these detections result from line-of-sight contamination. The relatively low Lyman-continuum escape fraction limit and the low fraction of systems detected are an indication that low-mass line-emitting galaxies may not be as important a source of reionization as hoped if these are analogs of reionization sources. We also investigate the structures of our galaxy sample, finding no evidence for a correlation of escape fraction with asymmetric structure.

An extreme blue nugget, UV-bright starburst at z = 3.613 with 90 per cent of Lyman continuum photon escape

ABSTRACT We present the discovery and analysis of J1316+2614 at z = 3.6130, a UV-bright star-forming galaxy (MUV ≃ −24.7) with large escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation. J1316+2614 is a young (≃10 Myr) star-forming galaxy with SFR ≃ 500 M⊙ yr−1 and a starburst mass of log(M⋆/M⊙) ≃ 9.7. It shows a very steep UV continuum, βUV = −2.59 ± 0.05, consistent with residual dust obscuration, E(B − V) ≃ 0. LyC emission is detected with high significance (≃17σ) down to 830 Å, for which a very high relative (absolute) LyC escape fraction $f_{\rm esc} \rm (LyC) \simeq 0.92$ (≃0.87) is inferred. The contribution of a foreground or active galactic nucleus contamination to the LyC signal is discussed, but is unlikely. J1316+2614 is the most powerful ionizing source known among the star-forming galaxy population, both in terms of production (QH ≈ 1056 s−1) and escape of ionizing photons ($f_{\rm esc} \rm (LyC) \approx 0.9$). Nebular emission in Ly α, H β, and other rest-frame optical lines are detected, but these are weak ($EW_{0} \rm [H\beta ] \simeq 35$ Å), with their strengths reduced roughly by $\simeq 90{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. J1316+2614 is the first case known where the effect of large escape of ionizing photons on the strength of nebular lines and continuum emission is clearly observed. Gas inflows are detected in J1316+2614 from the blue-dominated peak Ly α emission (with a blue-to-red peak line ratio Iblue/Ired ≃ 3.7) and redshifted interstellar medium absorption (≃100 km s−1). Our results suggest that J1316+2614 is undergoing a gas compaction event, possibly representing a short-lived phase in the evolution of massive and compact galaxies, where strong gas inflows have triggered an extreme star formation episode and nearly 100 per cent LyC photons are escaping.

No correlation of the Lyman continuum escape fraction with spectral hardness

The properties that govern the production and escape of hydrogen-ionizing photons (Lyman continuum, LyC; with energies &gt; 13.6 eV) in star-forming galaxies are still poorly understood, but they are key to identifying and characterizing the sources that reionized the Universe. Here we empirically explore the relation between the hardness of ionizing radiation and the LyC leakage in a large sample of low-z star-forming galaxies from the recent Hubble Space Telescope Low-z Lyman Continuum Survey. Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey stacks and deep X-shooter observations, we investigate the hardness of the ionizing spectra (QHe+/QH) between 54.4 eV (He+) and 13.6 eV (H) from the optical recombination lines He II 4686 Å and Hβ 4861 Å for galaxies with LyC escape fractions spanning a wide range, fesc(LyC) ≃ 0−90%. We find that the observed intensity of He II/Hβ is primarily driven by variations in the metallicity, but is not correlated with LyC leakage. Both very strong (&lt;fesc(LyC)&gt; ≃ 0.5) and nonleakers (&lt;fesc(LyC)&gt; ≃ 0) present similar observed intensities of He II and Hβ at comparable metallicity, between ≃0.01 and ≃0.02 for 12 + log(O/H)&gt; 8.0 and &lt; 8.0, respectively. Our results demonstrate that QHe+/QH does not correlate with fesc(LyC), which implies that strong LyC emitters do not show harder ionizing spectra than nonleakers at similar metallicity.

Mg ii in the JWST era: a probe of Lyman continuum escape?

ABSTRACT Limited constraints on the evolution of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction represent one of the primary uncertainties in the theoretical determination of the reionization history. Due to the intervening intergalactic medium, the possibility of observing LyC photons directly in the epoch of reionization is highly unlikely. For this reason, multiple indirect probes of LyC escape have been identified, some of which are used to identify low-redshift LyC leakers (e.g. O32), while others are primarily useful at z &amp;gt; 6 (e.g. [O iii]/[C iii] far-infrared emission). The flux ratio of the resonant Mg ii doublet emission at 2796$\mathring{\rm A}$ and 2803$\mathring{\rm A}$ as well as the Mg ii optical depth have recently been proposed as ideal diagnostics of LyC leakage that can be employed at z &amp;gt; 6 with JWST. Using state-of-the-art cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations post-processed with CLOUDY and resonant-line radiative transfer, we test whether Mg ii is indeed a useful probe of LyC leakage. Our simulations indicate that the majority of bright, star-forming galaxies with high LyC escape fractions are expected to be Mg ii emitters rather than absorbers at z = 6. However, we find that the Mg ii doublet flux ratio is a more sensitive indicator of dust rather than neutral hydrogen, limiting its use as a LyC leakage indicator to only galaxies in the optically thin regime. Given its resonant nature, we show that Mg ii will be an exciting probe of the complex kinematics in high-redshift galaxies in upcoming JWST observations.

The Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey. I. New, Diverse Local Lyman Continuum Emitters

The origins of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons responsible for the reionization of the universe are as of yet unknown and highly contested. Detecting LyC photons from the Epoch of Reionization is not possible due to absorption by the intergalactic medium, which has prompted the development of several indirect diagnostics to infer the rate at which galaxies contribute LyC photons to reionize the universe by studying lower-redshift analogs. We present the Low-redshift Lyman Continuum Survey (LzLCS) comprising measurements made with the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph for a z = 0.2–0.4 sample of 66 galaxies. After careful processing of the far-UV spectra, we obtain a total of 35 Lyman continuum emitters (LCEs) detected with 97.725% confidence, nearly tripling the number of known local LCEs. We estimate escape fractions from the detected LyC flux and upper limits on the undetected LyC flux, finding a range of LyC escape fractions up to 50%. Of the 35 LzLCS LCEs, 12 have LyC escape fractions greater than 5%, more than doubling the number of known local LCEs with cosmologically relevant LyC escape.

The VANDELS survey: a measurement of the average Lyman-continuum escape fraction of star-forming galaxies at z = 3.5

ABSTRACT We present a study designed to measure the average Lyman-continuum escape fraction (〈fesc〉) of star-forming galaxies at z ≃ 3.5. We assemble a sample of 148 galaxies from the VANDELS spectroscopic survey at 3.35 ≤ zspec ≤ 3.95, selected to minimize line-of-sight contamination of their photometry. For this sample, we use ultra-deep, ground-based, U-band imaging and Hubble Space Telescope V-band imaging to robustly measure the distribution of $\mathcal {R_{\rm obs}}\, =(L_{\rm LyC}/L_{\rm UV})_{\rm obs}$. We then model the $\mathcal {R_{\rm obs}}$ distribution as a function of 〈fesc〉, carefully accounting for attenuation by dust, the intergalactic medium and the circumgalactic medium. A maximum likelihood fit to the $\mathcal {R_{\rm obs}}$ distribution returns a best-fitting value of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle =0.07^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$, a result confirmed using an alternative Bayesian inference technique (both techniques exclude 〈fesc〉 = 0.0 at &amp;gt;3σ). By splitting our sample in two, we find evidence that 〈fesc〉 is positively correlated with Ly α equivalent width (Wλ(Ly α)), with high and low Wλ(Lyα) subsamples returning values of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle =0.12^{+0.06}_{-0.04}$ and $\langle f_{\rm esc} \rangle =0.02^{+0.02}_{-0.01}$, respectively. In contrast, we find evidence that 〈fesc〉 is anticorrelated with intrinsic UV luminosity and UV dust attenuation; with low UV luminosity and dust attenuation subsamples both returning best fits in the range 0.10 ≤ 〈fesc〉 ≤ 0.22. We do not find a clear correlation between fesc and galaxy stellar mass, suggesting stellar mass is not a primary indicator of fesc. Although larger samples are needed to further explore these trends, our results suggest that it is entirely plausible that the low dust, low-metallicity galaxies found at z ≥ 6 will display the 〈fesc〉 ≥ 0.1 required to drive reionization.
