Risk Factors for Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Patients with Lung Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Lung cancer increases the risk for pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). The risk factors for newly diagnosed PTB are not known in lung cancer. This study analyzed risk factors of new-onset PTB among lung cancer patients in Taiwan. Methods: Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database and Taiwan Cancer Registry were used to define PTB and lung cancer patients between 2007 and 2015. Considering that mortality was a competing risk event during the cancer treatment, Fine and Gray method was performed to estimate the possible risk factors for PTB among lung cancer patients. Results: A total of 1,335 patients had PTB after lung cancer. The incidence of PTB increased with patients' raising age. Males had 1.7-fold (95% CI: 1.5-2.0) risk of PTB compared with females. Patients aged between 60-69 years (HR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.1-1.8) and those ≥70 years (HR: 1.9; 95% CI: 1.5-2.4) had higher PTB risk than those aged under 50 years. Patients with history of pneumoconiosis and patients who received the treatments of surgery and chemotherapy also had significant increasing risk of PTB. Conclusion: Screening for PTB may be important among lung cancer patients with the aforementioned risk factors.

Bone-targeting agent utilization among lung cancer patients with bone metastasis in Taiwan.

e24111 Background: Bone is a common metastatic site among patients with advanced lung cancer. With new treatments available to improve survival of lung cancer and in all likelihood to change the natural history of disease, the diagnosis and management of bone metastasis (BM) may be of increasing clinical relevance. This study aimed to describe the management of BM using bone targeting agents (BTA) among lung cancer patients in Taiwan. Methods: A retrospective cohort of lung cancer patients with BM from 2004 through 2016 was identified using Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) data and Taiwan Cancer Registry. Diagnosis codes of International Classification of Disease 9th revision (ICD-9: 198.5) and ICD-10 (C79.51 and C78.03) were used to define BM. Patients were followed from the time of BM diagnosis till death or the end of study period (2017/12/31). We ascertained demographic information and BTA use among these patients. Two classes of BTAs were included: bisphosphonates (zoledronic acid (ZA), pamidronate, and clodronate) and denosumab. Results: A total of 44,800 patients with lung cancer and incident BM diagnosis were identified during the study period. Median age at the time of BM diagnosis was 67 years (25th and 75th percentile: 57-76), with 58.2% male (n = 26,058). The annual number of lung cancer patients with incident BM increased from 2,814 in 2004 to 3,829 in 2016, while the proportion of these patients receiving any BTA during the follow-up ranged from 25.2% to 34.8% annually. Clodronate and pamidronate were the common BTA prescriptions, whereas denosumab became the most frequently prescribed BTA after reimbursement by NHI since 2015. Among patients who initiated BTA after BM diagnosis (n = 10,879), the median time from BM diagnosis to BTA initiation ranged from 31 to 152 days by initial BTA type. More than half of them received more than one dose (56.3%, n = 6,126), with median numbers of doses received as 3, 4, 6 and 6 for ZA, pamidronate, clodronate and denosumab, respectively. Conclusions: A large population of patients with lung cancer were diagnosed with BM every year. However, overall, we observed only a small proportion of eligible patients receiving a BTA and a delayed initiation of BTA, indicating suboptimal treatment for lung cancer patients with BM in Taiwan.[Table: see text]

Relationships of exercise timing with sleep, fatigue and rest-activity rhythms of lung cancer patients in Taiwan: An exploratory study.

To explore the relationship of exercise timing (exercising close to bedtime, exercising in daylight and maintaining fixed exercise schedule) with sleep quality, fatigue and rest-activity rhythms among lung cancer patients in Taiwan. Results from 43 lung cancer patients who were assigned and adhered to the exercise intervention in a 12-week randomised controlled trial were analysed. The MD Anderson Symptom Inventory and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were administered. Actigraphs were used to assess rest-activity rhythms (in-bed less than out-of-bed dichotomy index, I<O) and objective sleep parameters, including total sleep time (TST) and sleep onset latency (SOL). Patients who exercised >4hr before bedtime had significant improvement in fatigue (p<.0001), sleep quality (p=.012 for PSQI; p=.037 for TST; p=.017 for SOL) and rest-activity rhythms (p=.048 for I<O). Furthermore, patients who exercised with daylight exposure had a significant improvement in fatigue (p=.037) and sleep quality (p=.039 for PSQI). Exercising >4hr before bedtime with daylight exposure is associated with improvement in rest-activity rhythms, sleep quality and fatigue in lung cancer patients. The causal relationship requires further investigation with experimental design.

Epidemiology and Survival Outcomes of Lung Cancer: A Population-Based Study.

Purpose Lung cancer has been the top-ranking cause of cancer deaths in Taiwan for decades. Limited data were available in global cancer surveillance regarding lung cancer epidemiology in Taiwan, and previous reports are outdated. Patients and Methods This population-based cohort study extracted data of patients with lung cancer from the Taiwan National Health Insurance database and determined the lung cancer incidence and prevalence during 2002–2014. Histological subtypes were retrieved from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database; survival rates were gathered from the National Death Registry. Average annual percentage changes (APCs) of prevalence, incidence, and overall survival were estimated by joinpoint regression analysis. Results Age-standardized incidence of lung cancer increased from 45.04 per 100,000 person-years in 2002 to 49.86 per 100,000 person-years in 2014, with an average APC of 0.7 (95% CI = 0.3–1.1; 0.2 in males, 2.0 in females). Lung cancer was more prevalent in male patients, but this increase gradually slowed down. Socioeconomic analysis showed that lung cancer has higher prevalence in patients with higher income level and urban residency. Adenocarcinoma was the most abundant histological subtype in Taiwan (adenocarcinoma-to-squamous cell carcinoma ratio = 4.16 in 2014), with a 2.4-fold increase of incident cases during 2002–2014 (from 43.47% to 64.89% of all lung cancer cases). The 5-year survival rate of lung cancer patients in 2010 was 17.34% (12.60% in male, 25.40% in female), with an average APC of 9.3 (6.3 in male, 11.8 in female) during 2002–2010. Conclusion Average APCs of prevalence and incidence of lung cancer were 3.1 and 0.7, respectively, during 2002–2014 in Taiwan. The number of female patients and number of patients with adenocarcinoma have increased the most, with incident cases doubling in these years. Facing this fatal malignancy, it is imperative to improve risk stratification, encourage early surveillance, and develop effective therapeutics for lung cancer patients in Taiwan.

Screening for fear of cancer recurrence: Instrument validation and current status in early stage lung cancer patients

Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is one of the most distressing concerns for cancer patients. A psychometrically validated brief scale is urgently needed for use in busy clinical oncology settings. This study aimed to (1) develop and validate the 7-item fear of cancer recurrence scale Chinese version (FCR7-C), and (2) explore the severity of FCR in post-operative early-stage lung cancer patients in Taiwan. Early-stage lung cancer patients were recruited from a medical center in Taiwan. The FCR7-C was evaluated for content and construct validity and internal consistency reliability. Construct validity of FCR7-C was determined by the empirically supported correlation and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A total of 160 subjects were recruited. The FCR7-C was shown to have satisfactory content validity and internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's α=0.9). The uni-dimensional structure was confirmed by CFA that showed a good fit for the model. The FCR7-C score correlates positively with the degree of most of the physical symptoms, anxiety, and depression, but correlates negatively with patient age, performance status, and quality of life. We found that 81.9% of patients reported at least some FCR, with a mean FCR severity of 15.18 (SD=7.78). FCR7-C is a brief screening tool with good psychometrics. Patients with early-stage lung cancer still revealed mild to moderate level of FCR. Applying the FCR7-C for to screen cancer patients' distress and further develop personalized psychological interventions would be strongly suggested.

Smoking Status Among Patients With Newly Diagnosed Lung Cancer in Taiwan

ABSTRACTBackgroundContinued smoking after receiving a diagnosis of cancer seriously affects disease prognosis and survival. The prevalence and risk factors of continued smoking among patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer are unknown in Taiwan.PurposeThe aims of this study were to assess the smoking status of patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer and to identify the characteristics that are associated with different smoking statuses.MethodsBaseline data of a longitudinal study on smoking behaviors after lung cancer diagnosis were analyzed in this study. Patients were consecutively recruited from three medical centers in northern Taiwan. A structured questionnaire and medical chart reviews were used to collect data. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to examine the factors associated with continuing to smoke after being diagnosed with lung cancer.ResultsAmong the 406 patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer who were recruited, 47.0% were never-smokers and 53.0% were ever-smokers. Among the second group, 38% were former smokers, 18% were recent quitters, and 44% were current smokers. Compared with former smokers, current smokers were more likely to be younger (OR = 1.05), to not exercise regularly (OR = 2.74), to currently live with smokers (OR = 2.48), and to have lower self-efficacy for refusing to smoke (OR = 0.95). Compared with recent quitters, current smokers were more likely to have lower self-efficacy for refusing to smoke.Conclusions/Implications for PracticeA significant proportion of ever-smoker lung cancer patients in Taiwan will continue to smoke after receiving their diagnosis. Variables known to modify the risk factors associated with continued smoking such as regular exercise and better refusal self-efficacy should be considered and incorporated into future smoking cessation programs for patients with lung cancer.

Effect of Comorbidity on Lung Cancer Diagnosis Timing and Mortality: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan.

The effect of comorbidity on lung cancer patients' survival has been widely reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of comorbidity on the establishment of the diagnosis of lung cancer and survival in lung cancer patients in Taiwan by using a nationwide population-based study design. This study collected various comorbidity patients and analyzed data regarding the lung cancer diagnosis and survival during a 16-year follow-up period (1995–2010). In total, 101,776 lung cancer patients were included, comprising 44,770 with and 57,006 without comorbidity. The Kaplan–Meier analyses were used to compare overall survival between lung cancer patients with and without comorbidity. In our cohort, chronic bronchitis patients who developed lung cancer had the lowest overall survival in one (45%), five (28.6%), and ten years (26.2%) since lung cancer diagnosis. Among lung cancer patients with nonpulmonary comorbidities, patients with hypertension had the lowest overall survival in one (47.9%), five (30.5%), and ten (28.2%) years since lung cancer diagnosis. In 2010, patients with and without comorbidity had 14.86 and 9.31 clinical visits, respectively. Lung cancer patients with preexisting comorbidity had higher frequency of physician visits. The presence of comorbid conditions was associated with early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Effects and mechanisms of betulinic acid on improving EGFR TKI-resistance of lung cancer cells.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations have been identified in approximately 55% of lung cancer patients in Taiwan. Gefitinib (Iressa) and Erlotinib (Tarceva) are the first-generation targeting drugs to patients with EGFR gene mutants a work by inhibiting tyrosine kinase activity. However, resistance in EGFR-mutated patients to first-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy after 8-11 months of treatment has occurred. Betulinic acid (BetA) is a pentacyclic triterpenoid natural product derived from widespread plants. BetA has been reported to have a cytotoxic effect in several cancers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects and mechanisms of BetA on dampening EGFR TKI-resistance of lung cancer cells. Our study has demonstrated by MTT assay that combining BetA and an EGFR TKI increased the cytotoxicity against EGFR TKI-resistance lung cancer cells. Based on flow cytometry, combination treatments of BetA with an EGFR TKI enhanced Sub-G1 accumulation, induced apoptosis and induced mitochondrial membrane potential loss. Using western blotting, BetA and EGFR TKI combined treatments inhibited cell cycle related protein and triggered apoptosis- and autophagy- related protein expression. Taken together, our data suggests that a target therapy combining BetA with an EGFR TKI improves drug efficacy in EGFR TKI-resistant lung cancer cells.

Characteristics of Chinese herbal medicine usage and its effect on survival of lung cancer patients in Taiwan

Ethnopharmacological relevanceIn Taiwan, lung cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers. Survival of lung cancer patients remains low, ranging from 6% to 18%. Studies have shown that Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) can be used to induce cell apoptosis and exhibit anti-inflammatoryanti-inflammatory activities in cancer cells. Aim of the studyThis study aimed to investigate the frequencies and patterns of CHM treatment for lung cancer patients and the effect of CHM on their survival probability in Taiwan. Materials and methodsWe identified 6939 lung cancer patients (ICD-9-CM: 162). We allocated 264 CHM users and 528 CHM-non users, matched for age, gender, duration, and regular treatment. Chi-square test, conditional multivariable logistic regression, Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test were used in this study. ResultsThe CHM group was characterized by a longer follow up time and more cases of hyperlipidemia and liver cirrhosis. This group exhibited a lower mortality hazard ratio (0.48, 95% confidence interval [0.39–0.61], p < 0.001), after adjusting for comorbidities. The trend was also observed that the cumulative survival probability was higher in CHM than in non-CHM users (p < 0.0001, log rank test). Analysis of their CHM prescription pattern revealed that Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang (BZYQT), Xiang-Sha-Liu-Jun-Zi-Tang (XSLJZT), and Bai-He-Gu-Jin-Tang (BHGJT); and Bei-Mu (BM), Xing-Ren (XR) and Ge-Gen (GG) were found to be the top three formulas and herbs, respectively. Among them, BM was the core CHM of the major cluster, and Jie-Geng (JG) and Mai-Men-Dong-Tang (MMDT) were important CHMs by CHM network analysis. ConclusionThe use of CHM as an adjunctive therapy may reduce the mortality hazard ratio of lung cancer patients. The investigation of their comprehensive CHM prescription patterns might be useful in future large-scale, randomized clinical investigations of agent effectiveness, safety, and potential interactions with conventional treatments for lung cancer patients.

Targeted gene sequencing panel for identifying actionable genomic alterations in Taiwanese lung cancer patients.

e20522 Background: Lung cancer boasts an arsenal of targeted therapies directed at various molecular aberrations such as EGFR mutations and fusion genes. Simultaneous assessment for genetic alterations provides biomarkers to assist clinicians in their treatment selections. Methods: A total of 43 FFPE (formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded) samples obtained from lung cancer patients in Taiwan were subjected to next-generation sequencing (NGS), using a compact panel encompassing 17 potentially actionable, lung cancer-associated genes. NGS was performed on the Ion Torrent PGM or Proton System with a targeted average depth of &gt; 800x. Genomic alterations detected were categorized as single nucleotide variants (SNV) or chromosomal copy number alterations (CNA). Results: A total of 74 putatively actionable genomic alterations were detected across 38 patients (88.4%), which may predict sensitivity or resistance to established and/or therapies that are still in clinical development. 19 patients (44.2%) had tumors harboring activating EGFR mutations in the tyrosine kinase (TK) domain – L858R substitution or exon 19 deletion, which may suggest clinical benefit to first- and second-generation EGFR TK inhibitors (TKIs). Three patients (7.0%) whose tumor had acquired the EGFR T790M mutation were advised to switch to third-generation EGFR TKI. Possible resistance mechanisms to EGFR TKIs via increased copy number of EGFR (14.0%, n = 6) and MET (11.6%, n = 5) were observed. Deletion or loss of CDKN2A gene were detected in 14 patients (32.6%), which may confer sensitivity to CDK4/6 inhibitors. Inhibition of downstream effectors in the RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways were suggested for patients whose tumor harbored PIK3CA and/or KRAS oncogenic mutations. Conclusions: Next-generation sequencing using a compact panel of genes may be sufficient to identify biomarkers for targeted therapies selection for most lung cancer patients in Taiwan.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase translocation is correlated with anaplastic lymphoma kinase expression and mutually exclusive with epidermal growth factor receptor mutation in Taiwanese non-small cell lung cancer.

The echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (EML4-ALK) fusion gene is an important biomarker for target therapy. The aim of this study is to better understand the clinical and molecular features of the EML4-ALK fusion gene in lung cancer patients in Taiwan and therefore to generate an efficient algorithm for the detection of ALK translocation. In the first cohort, ALK translocation was identified in 1 adenocarcinoma from 100 lung cancer patients by using break apart fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). Next, we detected 6 ALK translocations in another 40 EGFR wild type adenocarcinomas but not in 40 cases with EGFR mutation. Histological analysis revealed that solid growth with signet-ring cells or cribriform glands with extracellular mucin were noted in all the 7 ALK translocated cases. One ALK positive cancer with mucinous cribriform pattern had no ALK expression. ALK expression was correlated with ALK translocation (p < 0.001), but not with ALK gene copy number gain (CNG) (P = 0.838). ALK translocation was also mutually exclusive with EGFR mutation in Taiwanese non-small cell lung cancer (P = 0.033). These results indicate that screening tests for EGFR mutation status and/or ALK expression could help efficiently select ALK translocated patients for target therapy.

Latent TB infection in newly diagnosed lung cancer patients – A multicenter prospective observational study

ObjectivesLung cancer and tuberculosis (TB) share common risk factors and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Coexistence of lung cancer and TB were reported in previous studies, with uncertain pathogenesis. The association between lung cancer and latent TB infection (LTBI) remains to be explored. MethodsNewly diagnosed, treatment-naïve lung cancer patients were prospectively enrolled from four referral medical centers in Taiwan. The presence of LTBI was determined by QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT). Demographic characteristics and cancer-related factors associated with LTBI were investigated. The survival status was also analyzed according to the status of LTBI. ResultsA total of 340 lung cancer patients were enrolled, including 96 (28.2%) LTBI, 214 (62.9%) non-LTBI, and 30 (8.8%) QFT-GIT results-indeterminate cases. Non-adenocarcinoma cases had higher proportion of LTBI than those of adenocarcinoma, especially in patients with younger age. In multivariate analysis, COPD (OR 2.41, 95% CI 1.25–4.64), fibrocalcified lesions on chest radiogram (OR 2.73, 95% CI 1.45–5.11), and main tumor located in typical TB areas (OR 2.02, 95% CI 1.15–3.55) were independent clinical predictors for LTBI. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis demonstrated patients with indeterminate QFT-GIT results had significantly higher 1-year all-cause mortality than those with LTBI (p<0.001) and non-LTBI (p=0.003). In multivariate analysis, independent predictors for 1-year all-cause mortality included BMI<18.5 (HR 2.09, 95% CI 1.06–4.14, p=0.033), advanced stage of lung cancer (RR 7.76, 95% CI 1.90–31.78, p=0.004), and indeterminate QFT-GIT results (RR 2.40, 95% CI 1.27–4.54, p=0.007). ConclusionsMore than one-quarter of newly diagnosed lung cancer patients in Taiwan have LTBI. The independent predictors for LTBI include COPD, fibrocalcified lesions on chest radiogram, and main tumor located in typical TB areas. The survival rate is comparable between LTBI and non-LTBI cases. However, indeterminate QFT-GIT result was an independent predictor for all-cause mortality in lung cancer patients.

SNP rs10248565 in HDAC9 as a novel genomic aberration biomarker of lung adenocarcinoma in non-smoking women

BackgroundNumerous efforts have been made to elucidate the etiology and improve the treatment of lung cancer, but the overall five-year survival rate is still only 15%. Although cigarette smoking is the primary risk factor for lung cancer, only 7% of female lung cancer patients in Taiwan have a history of smoking. Since cancer results from progressive accumulation of genetic aberrations, genomic rearrangements may be early events in carcinogenesis.ResultsIn order to identify biomarkers of early-stage adenocarcinoma, the genome-wide DNA aberrations of 60 pairs of lung adenocarcinoma and adjacent normal lung tissue in non-smoking women were examined using Affymetrix Genome-Wide Human SNP 6.0 arrays. Common copy number variation (CNV) regions were identified by ≥30% of patients with copy number beyond 2 ± 0.5 of copy numbers for each single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and at least 100 continuous SNP variant loci. SNPs associated with lung adenocarcinoma were identified by McNemar’s test. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) SNPs were identified in ≥18% of patients with LOH in the locus. Aberration of SNP rs10248565 at HDAC9 in chromosome 7p21.1 was identified from concurrent analyses of CNVs, SNPs, and LOH.ConclusionThe results elucidate the genetic etiology of lung adenocarcinoma by demonstrating that SNP rs10248565 may be a potential biomarker of cancer susceptibility.

Comparison of IHC, FISH and RT-PCR Methods for Detection of ALK Rearrangements in 312 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients in Taiwan

BackgroundRecently Echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4- anaplastic lymphoma kinase (EML4-ALK) fusion gene has become an important biomarker for ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor (crizotinib) treatment in NSCLC. However, the best detection method and the significance of EML4-ALK variant types remain uncertain.MethodsReverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), fluorescence in Situ hybridization (FISH) and Immunohistochemical (IHC) stain were performed on tumor tissues of 312 NSCLC patients for detection of ALK rearrangements. Mutation analyses for EGFR and KRAS genes were also performed.ResultsThirteen of the 312 patients (4.17%) had ALK rearrangements detected by RT-PCR. If RT-PCR data was used as the gold standard, FISH tests had a low sensitivity (58.33%), but very good specificity (99.32%). IHC stain had better sensitivity (91.67%) than FISH, but lower specificity (79.52%), when the cut off was IHC2+. All of the 8 patients with high abundance of EML4-ALK positive cells in tumor tissues (assessed by the signal intensities of the RT-PCR product), were also have high expression of ALK protein (IHC3+), and positive for FISH, except one failed in FISH. Variants 3a+3b (4/5, 80%) of EML4-ALK fusion gene were more common to have high abundance of EML4-ALK positive cells in tumor tissues than variant 1 (1/3, 33.3%). Meta-analysis of the published data of 2273 NSCLC patients revealed that variant 3 (23/44, 52.3%) was the most common type in Chinese population, while variant 1 (28/37, 75.7%) was most common in Caucasian.ConclusionsAmong the three detection methods, RT-PCR could detect not only the presence of EML4-ALK fusion gene and their variant types, but also the abundance of EML4-ALK positive cells in NSCLC tumor tissues. The latter two factors might affect the treatment response to anti-ALK inhibitor. Including RT-PCR as a diagnostic test for ALK inhibitor treatment in the prospective clinical trials is recommended.

Distributions of usage and the costs of conventional medicine and traditional chinese medicine for lung cancer patients in taiwan.

Background. This study aims to analyze the utilization patterns of patients with lung cancer stratified by surgery status. Methods. A retrospective cohort study was conducted from 1996 to 2010 by using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005. Results. Among the 7,677 lung cancer patients, 230 (31.17%) and 1,826 (26.32%) who have and have not undergone surgery have used TCM outpatient services, respectively. For lung cancer patients who have not undergone surgery, patients who are aged 70 years and older, males, occupational members, and farmers and fishermen are less likely to avail of TCM services. For lung cancer patients who have undergone surgery, the likelihood of TCM users is higher in residents who used TCM one year prior to lung cancer diagnosis and in patients with insurance amounts ranging from ≥NT$60,000. The total amount paid per visit for WM is higher than that for one year of TCM outpatient care before and after lung cancer diagnosis. Conclusion. The factors associated with TCM use varied according to surgery status. The costs of insurance covering TCM were consistently lower than those covering WM for lung cancer patients. These findings would be useful for health policy makers who are considering TCM and WM integration.

Factors related to daily life interference in lung cancer patients: A cross-sectional regression tree study

PurposeTo identify the symptom combination patterns and symptom severity levels that induce severe symptom interference in daily life activities, including physical and psychological activity interference in lung cancer patients. MethodsIn a cross-sectional descriptive study using convenience sampling, 131 participants were recruited at a medical center in northern Taiwan. The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status was used to assess performance status, and the Taiwanese version of the M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI-T) was used to assess symptom severity and symptom interference in daily life activities including physical and psychological activities. Regression tree models were applied to examine variable combinations for symptom interference level in daily life activities, including physical and psychological activity interference. ResultsStudy results revealed that the performance status is the key discriminator of the symptom interference level in daily life and physical activities, but distress severity is the key discriminating factor of the symptom interference level in psychological activities. The performance status and distress severity, plus other factors, further specifically show the discrimination paths and interactions between the risk groups. ConclusionsThis study provided an alternative approach to identify low- and high-risk groups of symptom interference among lung cancer patients in Taiwan. Increased awareness and further understanding of the risk combinations and discriminate levels of symptom severity that induced high symptom interference offer different perspectives to develop patient-centered care planning for lung cancer patient rehabilitation.
