Two coplanar tetranuclear Ln(III) clusters, [Ln4(acac)4(μ2-L)6(μ3-OH)2]·2C2H5OH (Ln = Tb (1) and Dy (2)) constructed by one Schiff base ligand (HL = 5-((4-methylbenzylidene)amino)quinolin-8-ol) and a β-diketonate ligand (Hacac = acetylacetone), have been synthesized and structurally and magnetically characterized. Alternating-current (ac) susceptibility measurements reveal that no significant out-of-phase (χ″) ac signals were observed in 1, however, the remarkable slow magnetic relaxation behavior were occurred for 2 with the anisotropic barrier (ΔE/kB) of 82.1 K and τ0 of 6.34 × 10−8 s. Interestingly, two maxima out-of-phase (χ″) ac signals are appeared in 2, which are indicative of the operation of more than one relaxation process. In addition, the luminescence properties of clusters 1 and 2 were studied.
