PURPOSE To compare bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone metabolism in postmenopausal active women according to the total energy expenditure in physical activity (PA). METHODS Subjects included 94 women, 50 to 83 years of age (68.4±6.0 yr.) who took part in an aerobic PA program twice a week, 50 minutes per session at least in the last 12 months. DEXA was used to measure BMD at the lumbar spine (L1-L4), hip (total femur and neck), and total BMC. Bone metabolism was analyzed by serum calcium and alkaline phosphatase (formation marker). Total PA energy expenditure was determined by interview using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), last week, short version. PA level was divided in tertiles according to METS expended in minutes per week with vigorous and moderate PA, and walking. The statistical analysis used was ANOVA One Way, Scheffé post hoc (*p<.05), and delta percent differences were calculated among the groups. RESULTS Data are summarized on the table in mean and standard deviation:TableSubjects were classified according to BMI as overweight. The median PA energy expenditure of the group was 1874.0 METS min/week. It is possible to classify this group as a “minimally active”, according to IPAQ international criteria (>600 < 3000 METS min/week). Analyzing data of BMD, BMC, and bone metabolism, no-statistical differences were found among the tertiles of PA energy expenditure. CONCLUSION Present findings suggest that levels bone health could was not different among different levels of physical activity when measured though IPAQ. Supported by CNPq: 309481/2003-1.
