Promotion effect of nitrogen doping on the low-temperature NH3-SCR of NO over activated carbon: Characterization and mechanism analysis

Heteroatom nitrogen doping in carbon catalysts is recognized an effective strategy for tailoring the properties of carbon catalysts for various flue gas de-NOx applications. However, accurately discerning the active structures after nitrogen doping and elucidating the promotion effect on low-temperature selective catalytic reduction activity remains a formidable challenge under different nitrogen doping preparation conditions. In this study, a series of nitrogen-doped activated carbon catalysts was synthesized through the L16(45) orthogonal array design method, and the degree of influence of various preparation conditions on de-NOx catalytic activities was also assessed. The optimal preparation conditions determined by range analysis were employed to synthesize NOAC-17, achieving the NO conversion of 95% and N2 selectivity of 99% at 300 °C, respectively. Subsequently, various characterization results proved that nitrogen doping induced the formation of abundant basic groups. The imine, amide, amine, and N-6 groups altered the acid-base of the activated carbon surface and increased the adsorption of acidic NOx. The N-5 and N-Q groups enhanced electronic interaction in the carbon matrix and accelerated electron mobility in the catalytic reaction process. Moreover, the N-6 group played multiple roles beyond the aforementioned effect due to its special structure. It also enhanced the accumulation of oxygen vacancies, which were closely associated with further oxidation of adsorbed NO. The lone electron pair in the N-6 group within the activated carbon framework can alter the polarity of the catalyst, thereby exerting a positive influence on the adsorption and activation of NH3. The nitrogen-doped catalyst identified through range analysis of the orthogonal experiment primarily facilitated the NH3-SCR reaction via the E-R mechanism with supplementary contribution from L-H mechanism at low temperatures. The nitrogen doping conditions obtained for the activated carbon catalyst provide valuable insights for the strategic enhancement of its catalytic performance in low-temperature NH3-SCR reactions.

Iron-containing tailings catalyst modified by Mn for SCR of NO with NH3 at low temperature: Study of carrier treatment and calcination temperature

The development of cost-effective low temperature selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) catalysts for nitrogen oxides is a major challenge. To this end, a low-cost rare earth tailings catalyst modified by Mn was successfully synthesized by the impregnation method using rare earth tailings as raw materials. The iron-containing tailings catalyst modified by Mn exhibited high NH3 SCR activity with high N2 selectivity at low temperature range (150–200 ℃). The H2SO4 modification resulted in the weakening of the Fe-O bonds on the catalyst, thereby producing the active component, iron sulfate salt. The coordination occupancy of Brønsted acid sites is increased, thereby facilitating electron transfer and redox cycling of SCR. Furthermore, by modulating the calcination temperature, the synergistic effect of Fe and Mn is augmented, resulting in the generation of a substantial number of Mn-Fe composite oxides, which is conducive to the enhancement of NH3 adsorption and activation on the catalyst. The formation of additional Brønsted acids was identified as a primary factor influencing the enhancement of N2 selectivity in the catalyst. The catalytic process followed both the E-R and L-H mechanisms on the catalyst. The Iron-containing tailings catalyst modified by Mn represents a cost-effective and resource-conserving alternative. The provision of high denitrification efficiency, coupled with the capacity to address the issue of low N2 selectivity, offers a sustainable and low-carbon solution for the industrial reduction of NOx.

Energy saving and carbon reduction production process of municipal sludge-based biochar: Optimization, simulation, and techno-economic analysis

The production process of municipal sludge-based biochar is a promising and efficient sludge treatment process. However, inefficient cleaner production and limited resource utilization always caused environmental and cost concerns. Based on the measured data of engineering field operation, the optimized production process of energy saving and carbon reduction is put forward by using the process simulation of Aspen Plus software and economic analysis approach, and the sludge treatment capacity is 300 t/d. The objective of the study is to comparatively evaluate the energy efficiency, carbon emission reduction efficiency, and techno-economic performance of the optimized process. The newly added SNCR and low-temperature SCR units are combined denitration and coupled with a waste heat recovery unit to reduce energy consumption. Meanwhile, reduce carbon emissions and NOx emissions in the whole process. The base case of the optimization process and resource utilization was found to be viable. Compared with the conventional process, the energy efficiency is increased by 8.52 %, the total carbon emission is reduced by 27.41 %, and the total emissions of NOx and SO2 emissions are reduced by 78.11 %, thus reducing the environmental burden of greenhouse gas emissions. The total product cost is reduced by 26.76 %, the annual investment rate of return is increased by 27.45 %, the gross profit rate is increased by 23.78 %, and the internal rate of return is increased by 45.19 %, which has excellent profitability.

Research Progress in the Composition and Performance of Mn-Based Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalysts

NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) is the most prevalent and effective method for removing nitrogen oxides. Over the past few decades, manganese (Mn)-based catalysts have demonstrated strong catalytic activity and have been extensively studied for low-temperature NH3-SCR reactions. This paper provides an in-depth introduction to four forms of Mn-based catalysts: single manganese oxide-based catalysts, binary Mn-based metal oxide catalysts, ternary and multivariate Mn-based metal oxide catalysts, and nano-Mn-based catalysts. Advances have been made in enhancing Mn-based catalysts’ redox performance and acidity, increasing the active component’s dispersion, lowering binding energy, enlarging specific surface area, raising the Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio, and enriching surface adsorbed oxygen by optimizing preparation methods, altering the oxidation state of active components, modifying crystal phases, and adjusting morphology and dispersion, along with various metal modifications. The mechanism of low-temperature NH3-SCR reactions has been elucidated using various characterization techniques. Finally, the research directions and future prospects of Mn-based catalysts for low-temperature NH3-SCR reactions are discussed, aiming to accelerate the commercial application of new Mn-based catalysts.

Architecture of core-shell Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 catalyst and its SCR activity and SO2+H2O tolerance performance at low-temperature

It is a challenge to develop highly sulfur dioxide and water (SO2+H2O) resistance for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts of nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the non-electric-power industry. In this paper, core-shell and loaded type of Ce-OMS-2 complexes (Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 and CeO2/Ce-OMS-2) were successfully prepared. Their textural properties were characterized and catalytic performance were carried out. The results showed that the core-shell Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 material could maintain the mesoporous structure and significantly improve the mass transfer and adsorption of the reaction gas NO, thus improving the SCR efficiency. On the contrary, for the loaded CeO2/Ce-OMS-2 catalyst, large amounts of CeO2 deposited on the surface of Ce-OMS-2 and blocked the mesoporous structure. Furthermore, SO2 reacted with CeO2/Ce-OMS-2 to form lots of metal sulfate (manganese sulfate or cerium sulfate), which led to the deactivation of the active Mn sites. Therefore, the CeO2/Ce-OMS-2 catalyst exhibited the low SCR activity and poor SO2+H2O tolerance during the SCR reaction. We also clarify the reason for the anti-sulfur of core-shell Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 catalyst. In the presence of SO2 and H2O, SO2 could easily react with NH3 and H2O to produce ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4, ABS) on the surface of the Ce-OMS-2 and CeO2/Ce-OMS-2 catalysts. Then ABS can be physically deposited on the surface of the catalysts, thus blocking the active Mn sites to participate in the SCR reaction. Interesting, for the core-shell Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 catalyst, the formed ABS could significantly be decomposed at low temperature, leading to the exposure of surface active Mn sites of the catalyst. Herein, it could maintain the efficient SCR performance over the Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 catalyst. A dynamic balance of ABS formation and decomposition was achieved over Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 even at low temperatures, which hindered the SO2 poisoning during the NH3-SCR reaction. As expected, the core-shell Ce-OMS-2@CeO2 catalyst showed excellent SCR performance and SO2+H2O resistance (~100% NO conversion in the temperature range of 100–200 °C without SO2, ~80% NO conversion for 4 h in the presence of SO2). This work provides an effective strategy for the development of efficient and stable Mn-based low-temperature SCR catalysts.

Research progress of Mn-based low-temperature SCR denitrification catalysts.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a efficiently nitrogen oxides removal technology from stationary source flue gases. Catalysts are key component in the technology, but currently face problems including poor low-temperature activity, narrow temperature windows, low selectivity, and susceptibility to water passivation and sulphur dioxide poisoning. To develop high-efficiency low-temperature denitrification activity catalyst, manganese-based catalysts have become a focal point of research globally for low-temperature SCR denitrification catalysts. This article investigates the denitrification efficiency of unsupported manganese-based catalysts, exploring the influence of oxidation valence, preparation method, crystallinity, crystal form, and morphology structure. It examines the catalytic performance of binary and multicomponent unsupported manganese-based catalysts, focusing on the use of transition metals and rare earth metals to modify manganese oxide. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of supported manganese-based catalysts is studied, considering metal oxides, molecular sieves, carbon materials, and other materials (composite carriers and inorganic non-metallic minerals) as supports. The reaction mechanism of low-temperature denitrification by manganese-based catalysts and the mechanism of sulphur dioxide/water poisoning are analysed in detail, and the development of practical and efficient manganese-based catalysts is considered.

Low-Temperature Reduction of NOx by NH3 with Unity Conversion on Nanofilament MnO2/Activated Semi-Coke Catalyst.

Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with NH3 at low temperatures remains a crucial goal for industrial applications. However, effective catalysts operating at 70-90 °C are rarely reported, limiting SCR scenarios to high-temperature conditions. Herein, we report a unique MnO2 nanofilament catalyst grown on activated semi-coke synthesized via a one-step in situ hydrothermal approach, which exhibits a stable and marked 100 % conversion rate of NO to N2 with 100 % selectivity at 90 °C, superior to the other prepared structures (nanowires, nanorods, and nanotubes). Temperature-programmed desorption shows a large number of acid sites on MnO2(NFs)/ASC, benefiting the formation of NH4 + ions. Meanwhile, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy reveals the activation of NO with O2 to form bidentate nitrate/bridging nitrate NO2 intermediates via bidentate nitrate species, triggering the Fast SCR with NH3 at low temperatures. Such an effective, easy-to-prepare, and low-cost catalyst paves a new pathway for low-temperature SCR for a wide range of application scenarios.

Recent Progress on Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with Ammonia.

Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with ammonia (NH3-SCR) has been implemented in response to the regulation of NOx emissions from stationary and mobile sources above 300 °C. However, the development of NH3-SCR catalysts active at low temperatures below 200 °C is still needed to improve the energy efficiency and to cope with various fuels. In this review article, recent reports on low-temperature NH3-SCR catalysts are systematically summarized. The redox property as well as the surface acidity are two main factors that affect the catalytic activity. The strong redox property is beneficial for the low-temperature NH3-SCR activity but is responsible for N2O formation. The multiple electron transfer system is more plausible for controlling redox properties. H2O and SOx, which are often found with NOx in flue gas, have a detrimental effect on NH3-SCR activity, especially at low temperatures. The competitive adsorption of H2O can be minimized by enhancing the hydrophobic property of the catalyst. Various strategies to improve the resistance to SOx poisoning are also discussed.

A comparative study on the activity and adsorption of bimetallic MOF-derived Me-Cu/TiO2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni) for low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NO by CO

The catalytic activity, adsorption and synergistic effect over bimetallic MOF derivatives with different dopant metal were systemically compared. A series of Me-Cu/TiO2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni) derived from bimetallic Me/Cu-BTC MOFs were fabricated via a sacrificing template method and applied for CO-SCR. Among the bimetallic catalysts, Fe-Cu/TiO2 presented the best low-temperature of nearly 100% NO conversion from 150 °C to 350 °C with good NO selectivity. For Me-Cu/TiO2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni), the productions of crucial Cu+ intermediate were determined to be 51.17%, 50.45%,49.4% by XPS, which were consistent with their catalytic activity results. The superior redox behavior of Fe-Cu/TiO2 can be attributed to its higher Oβ / (Oα +Oβ) ratio of 32.90% and the higher Me2+ / Me3+ ratio of 1.79. In situ infrared analysis revealed that the Fe doping not only improved the formation and stability of nitrate species, but also enhanced the quantity of Lewis acid sites by forming Cu+-CO. Furthermore, a possible low-temperature Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism over Me-Cu /TiO2 (Me=Fe, Co, Ni) was proposed.

Effect of Tourmaline Addition on the Anti-Poisoning Performance of MnCeOx@TiO2 Catalyst for Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx.

In view of the flue gas characteristics of cement kilns in China, the development of low-temperature denitrification catalysts with excellent anti-poisoning performance has important theoretical and practical significance. In this work, a series of MnCeOx@TiO2 and tourmaline-containing MnCeOx@TiO2-T catalysts was prepared using a chemical pre-deposition method. It was found that the MnCeOx@TiO2-T2 catalyst (containing 2% tourmaline) exhibited the best low-temperature NH3-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) performance, yielding 100% NOx conversion at 110 °C and above. When 100-300 ppm SO2 and 10 vol.% H2O were introduced to the reaction, the NOx conversion of the MnCeOx@TiO2-T2 catalyst was still higher than 90% at 170 °C, indicating good anti-poisoning performance. The addition of appropriate amounts of tourmaline can not only preferably expose the active {001} facets of TiO2 but also introduce the acidic SiO2 and Al2O3 components and increase the content of Mn4+ and Oα on the surface of the catalyst, all of which contribute to the enhancement of reaction activity of NH3-SCR and anti-poisoning performance. However, excess amounts of tourmaline led to the formation of dense surface of catalysts that suppressed the exposure of catalytic active sites, giving rise to the decrease in catalytic activity and anti-poisoning capability. Through an in situ DRIFTS study, it was found that the addition of appropriate amounts of tourmaline increased the number of Brønsted acid sites on the catalyst surface, which suppressed the adsorption of SO2 and thus inhibited the deposition of NH4HSO4 and (NH4)2HSO4 on the surface of the catalyst, thereby improving the NH3-SCR performance and anti-poisoning ability of the catalyst.

Synthesis of Co/Ni-Doped mesoporous spinel ferrite microspheres for enhanced Low-Temperature SCR performance

The iron-based catalysts commonly used in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process cannot meet the increasingly stringent low-temperature NOx emission targets. In this study, mesoporous microspherical MFe2O4 (M=Co, Ni) spinel ferrite catalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal method and applied to the SCR of ammonia (NH3-SCR) reaction. Compared to Fe3O4, both NiFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 catalysts showed higher SCR catalytic activity at low temperature. The NiFe2O4 catalyst achieved a NO conversion of 95.5 % at 240 °C, while CoFe2O4 exhibited a high NO conversion of 97.6 % at 180 °C and a N2 selectivity of 99.6 %. Various characterization experiments revealed that the introduction of Co and Ni resulted in the formation of a specific mesoporous microsphere morphology in CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 catalysts, along with the generation of a large number of oxygen vacancies and acidic sites on the surface. These features facilitate the sequential adsorption and activation of NH3 and NOx species, resulting in excellent catalytic activity at low temperatures. Detailed in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurements showed that on NiFe2O4 the reaction follows the Eley–Rideal (E–R) mechanism, whereas it proceeds through the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) and Eley–Rideal (E–R) mechanisms on the CoFe2O4 catalyst. This work provides a feasible strategy for enhancing the low-temperature SCR reaction over iron-based catalysts; moreover, the elucidation of the complete reaction mechanism offers a solid foundation for future improvements in denitrification catalysts.

Atom Pairing Enhances Sulfur Resistance in Low-Temperature SCR via Upshifting the Lowest Unoccupied States of Cerium.

Environmentally benign cerium-based catalysts are promising alternatives to toxic vanadium-based catalysts for controlling NOx emissions via selective catalytic reduction (SCR), but conventional cerium-based catalysts unavoidably suffer from SO2 poisoning in low-temperature SCR. We develop a strongly sulfur-resistant Ce1+1/TiO2 catalyst by spatially confining Ce atom pairs to different anchoring sites of anatase TiO2(001) surfaces. Experimental results combined with theoretical calculations demonstrate that strong electronic interactions between the paired Ce atoms upshift the lowest unoccupied states to an energy level higher than the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of SO2 so as to be catalytically inert in SO2 oxidation but slightly lower than HOMO of NH3 so that Ce1+1/TiO2 has desired ability toward NH3 activation required for SCR. Hence, Ce1+1/TiO2 shows higher SCR activity and excellent stability in the presence of SO2 at low temperatures with respect to supported single Ce atoms. This work provides a general strategy to develop sulfur-resistant catalysts by tuning the electronic states of active sites for low-temperature SCR, which has implications for practical applications with energy-saving requirements.

Ammonia-free selective catalytic reduction of NO by coal-based activated carbon supported Cu-Mn oxides at low temperature

Selective catalytic reduction of ammonia is the most widely technology for removing NOx, but there were serious ammonia leakage and high temperature reaction. To overcome these limitations, a series of Cu and Mn metals supported on coal-based activated carbon (CuxMny/CAC) were synthesized, for ammonia-free catalytic reduction of NO at low temperature. The results demonstrated that Cu and/or Mn catalysts significantly improved low-temperature SCR performance and char-NO reaction selectivity when combined with CAC. In particular, Cu6Mn4/CAC showed excellent NO removal rate (100 %) and higher char-NO selectively (111.21 mg/g) at 290 ℃ under O2-rich condition. Characterization analyses revealed that Cu6Mn4/CAC had a larger BET surface area and preferable pore structure, and the synergistic effect mainly came from the redox cycle between CuOx and MnOy, as well as the interaction between Cu-Mn oxides and the CAC support. Cu-Mn metals promote the adsorption of NO and O2 in the char-NO process, leading to the generation of abundant surface adsorption oxygen species (O2-, O22-, and O-) and C(O) complex, which facilitated the char-NO reaction. Therefore, a mechanism for ammoniac-free selective catalytic reduction of NO by Cu6Mn4/CAC was proposed. These finding provide new insights for developing low-temperature ammonia-free denitrification technology and improving high-value utilization of coal resources.

M-MnCeOX derived from MOF for low temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOX by NH3: Experiments and mechanisms

A series of M-MnCeOX catalysts using MOF (Metal-organic Framework) were prepared to apply for NH3-SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) of NOX. The effects of Mn/Ce molar ratio, calcination temperature and its activity including catalytic activity, H2O/SO2 resistance and stability were systematically investigated. The results showed that under the Mn/Ce molar ratio of 1 and calcination temperature of 400 ℃, the catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity, H2O/SO2 resistance, and stability. When the concentration of NO was 500 ppm, the gas spatiotemporal velocity (GHSV) was 36,000 h−1, and the reaction temperature was 100 ℃, the NO conversion efficiency of M-MnCeOX exceeded 90.0 %. Added 200 ppm SO2 and 3 vol% H2O simultaneously, the NO conversion efficiency was close to 80.0 %. By analyzing the physicochemical properties of the catalyst, M-MnCeOX had a large specific surface area, numerous acidic sites, and excellent redox properties. According to density functional theory (DFT), the NH3/NO adsorption energy of M-MnCeOX were −2.35 and −2.40 eV, exhibiting lower than a single MOF-derivative, promoting the adsorption of NH3 or NO. The reaction mechanism on the M-MnCeOX catalyst followed the E-R and L-H mechanisms by In situ DRIFTS.

Low-temperature NOx reduction over Cu-LTA and SmMnOx composite catalysts

Low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia (NH3-SCR) over zeolite catalysts remains a great challenge in diesel exhaust purification. Herein, Cu-LTA zeolite with excellent hydrothermal stability was composited with a small proportion of SmMnOx oxides, the composite catalytic system efficiently resolves the low-temperature activity challenge encountered by Cu-LTA. The promoting pathways revealed the presence of active nitrite intermediates formed on SmMnOx by activating NO, that were able to migrate to the Cu-LTA and can be further decomposed on the Brønsted acid sites. Compared to the continuous deposition of nitrates in Cu-LTA, the presence of SmMnOx in composite catalysts efficiently reduced the accumulation of inert nitrate and improved the nitrate deposition phenomena. This innovative research would provide a rational strategy to break the barrier of limited low-temperature performance faced by zeolite catalysts, effectively promoting the NOx removal in vehicles sources.

Effect of water vapor on low temperature SCR performances over Cu and Mn-based catalysts: A comparison study

In this study, the commonly used Cu or Mn-based low-temperature SCR catalysts were employed to investigate their different reaction behaviors in the presence of high-content water vapor. Experimental results reveal that CuCeTi sample possesses superior water resistance at low temperature compared with MnCeTi catalyst. Upon the introduction of water vapor, both catalysts exhibit a quick loss in deNOx efficiency, while that is more pronounced on MnCeTi sample. In addition, unlike CuCeTi sample, MnCeTi catalyst also shows a gradual deactivation tendency after initial quick activity loss. Characterization and simulation results indicate that H2O is more easily adsorbed and dissociated on MnCeTi catalyst, showing stronger suppression on NH3 adsorption, causing more serious initial deactivation. Furthermore, more abundant hydroxyl groups derived from dissociative adsorption of water on MnCeTi catalyst will lead to more NH4NO3 deposition and the decrease in redox capacity. This is the main reason of gradual deactivation of MnCeTi catalyst at high-content water vapor. Such findings could pave a new way for development of highly efficient SCR catalysts with good water resistance for real application.

TiO<sub>2</sub>-ZnO Catalyst: A New Composite For Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO<sub>x</sub> with NH<sub>3</sub>

Investigations have underscored the pivotal role of NOx gases in the formation of smog and acid rain, posing threats to human health and ecosystems. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) has emerged as a promising strategy for curtailing NOx emissions. SCR involves the catalytic conversion of nitrogen oxides into benign nitrogen and water vapour, thereby offering a viable approach. In this study, a new composite of low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (LT-SCR) catalyst is synthesized by impregnating ZnO onto TiO2 ceramic substrate. The introduction of ZnO not only provides a high surface area but also results in the formation of a catalyst. This research presents the outcomes of an investigation involving a range of catalysts employed in SCR, including a composite catalyst composed of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. The objective is to evaluate the composite catalyst's capacity to reduce pollutants characterized by observable NOX content. The catalysts, synthesized through the sol-gel processing technique, are characterized by XRD and SEM to ascertain their suitability for catalytic applications. A comprehensive analysis concludes that the laboratory-synthesized samples exhibit acceptable purity, possess a crystalline structure, and hold potential as catalysts.

Revealing the two distinctive roles of HY zeolite in enhancing the activity and durability of manganese oxide-zeolite hybrid catalysts for low-temperature NH3-SCR

Recently, metal oxide-zeolite hybrid systems have shown promise in enhancing catalytic performance in low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR), but not much is known as to mechanistic details. The purpose of this study is to examine fluctuations in low-temperature activity contingent upon the presence or absence of zeolite and to elucidate a dual functional mechanism of mixed zeolite in improving the catalytic performance of MnOx, which is closely related to inter-particle diffusion of nitrite and nitrate species from MnOx to zeolite. Firstly, strong Brønsted acid sites on zeolite demonstrate a significantly faster reduction of diffused nitrite species compared to Brønsted/Lewis acid sites on MnOx. More importantly, we discovered that zeolite prevents ammonium nitrate deposition by absorbing and decomposing diffused nitrate species from MnOx.
