Study on the effect of self-melting snow materials on the properties of asphalt mixture

Adding self-melting snow material to asphalt pavement can improve driving safety in winter weather. Self-melting materials can melt the snow on the road surface, without too much negative impact on asphalt pavement. Two commonly used self-melting snow materials are particle type and powder type. Through indoor experiments, the effects of two self-melting snow materials on the high-temperature performance, low-temperature performance, water stability, and anti-stripping performance of asphalt mixtures are compared. The experiment shows that these self-melting snow materials have little effect on the high-temperature and low-temperature performance of the asphalt mixture, and the low-temperature performance of the mixture decreased after freeze-thaw environment. After freeze-thaw cycle or immersion, the snow melt components in the mixture gradually precipitate, leading to the water stability and anti-spalling performance.

Evaluating the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures based on the contraction and relaxation properties

The thermal cracking of asphalt pavement has been the focus of research in cold regions of the world. The contraction and relaxation properties of asphalt mixtures were crucial for investigating the thermal stress of asphalt pavement based on the thermal cracking mechanism. This paper proposed a novel evaluation index for characterizing the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures by considering their contraction and relaxation properties. Firstly, the rank during the evaluation indexes for low-temperature performance was determined by comparative analysis of method. Secondly, the thermal contraction coefficient was used to characterize contraction properties and cumulative stress at per unit strain rate (CSSR) was used to characterize relaxation properties in this paper. According to the cumulation process of thermal stress, a novel index was constructed based on the contraction and relaxation properties. Finally, considering the correlation between the failure temperature and the novel indexes, the prediction model of low-temperature performance consistent with the order of failure temperature was established based on the multiple linear regression method. Through the standardized analysis of the prediction model, the influence of novel indexes for the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures under different temperature conditions was clarified. A novel evaluation index provided a theoretical basis for unifying the evaluation indexes of asphalt mixtures.

Evaluation index for the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixture based on relaxation characteristics of thermal cracking mechanism

ABSTRACT The thermal cracking behaviour of asphalt pavement is complex and includes thermal contraction, low-temperature relaxation, and low-temperature damage. However, using relaxation characteristics alone instead of low-temperature properties leads to an incomplete evaluation. In this paper, the relationship between viscoelastic properties and relaxation characteristics was analyzed. Based on the time domain characteristics of relaxation, the relaxation rate and cumulative stress at per unit strain rate (CSSR) were proposed as evaluation indexes corresponding to the long-term/short-term characteristics of the relaxation. By combining the relationship among the low-temperature performance obtained by Thermal Stress Restrained Specimens Test (TSRST) and relaxation characteristics, evaluation indexes for the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixture were preferably selected. The results show that asphalt binders dominate the relaxation characteristics of asphalt mixtures, but do not directly replace the low- temperature performance of asphalt mixtures. The relaxation characteristics expressed by the traditional viscoelastic indexes were insufficient to fully evaluate the low- temperature performance of asphalt mixtures. Furthermore, the results of the relaxation characteristic index for evaluating the low-temperature performance were different under different temperature conditions, indicating that performance at a single temperature cannot replace the low-temperature performance at all temperatures.

Research on thermal stress fracture performance of low-temperature asphalt concrete in castel high altitude area

The temperature in the southwest Castel highland area is relatively low, and the asphalt concrete on the road surface is in a low-temperature state all year round. Strong ultraviolet radiation will interfere with the material and cause it to fracture and damage. This paper uses a low-temperature bending test and thermal stress constrained specimen test (TSRST) to test the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures with different gradation and asphalt types under different ultraviolet (UV) aging conditions. Existing studies are mainly based on asphalt aging, which cannot take into account the interactions between the binder and aggregate phases during aging. This paper analyzes the correlation between test indexes after UV aging and asphalt mixture parameters, as well as the impact of UV on asphalt mixtures, and the mechanical strength prediction model was established. The results indicate that when the aging time is less than 2 months, the low-temperature performance degradation rate of the asphalt mixture first accelerates and then gradually slows down. The degree of influence of ultraviolet radiation on different graded asphalt mixtures is in descending order: stone asphalt concrete, AC 16 asphalt concrete, and AC-13 asphalt concrete. The relationship between fracture thermal stress and asphalt mixture parameters is strong. It is suggested that the appropriate equivalent outdoor aging time is 2 months in the low-temperature performance test of asphalt mixture after UV aging. At the point when there is no UV test condition, the worth acquired by the test is prescribed to consider the UV aging attenuation coefficient, and the matrix asphalt can allude to 0.84; modified asphalt has a value of 0.9. This article is of great significance for guiding the research on thermal stress fracture of low-temperature asphalt concrete in Castel high-altitude areas.

Effect of mastic specifications on the fatigue and low-temperature performance of hot mix asphalt

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mastic specifications on the intermediate and low temperatures performance of hot mix asphalt. In this research study, four different asphalt mixtures were fabricated with two types of aggregate and bitumen at three different mastic densities (defined as F/B ratios). At intermediate temperature, Four-Point Bending (4PB) beam fatigue tests were carried out at 8 Hz frequency and the strain levels of 460, 750, and 1100 microstrain. Also, the low-temperature performance of mixtures was evaluated by using Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) tests at −6°C, −18°C and −12°C, −24°C for PG 64–16 and PG 58–22 fabricated mixtures, respectively. Fatigue test results showed that the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures was more influenced by the mastic density at the lower strain level. Moreover, a minimum mastic density was necessary for improving fatigue performance. The SCB test results revealed that increasing the mastic density makes higher values in the mixture’s fracture energy, fracture toughness, cracking resistance index (CRI), and tensile strength. Also, the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures containing aggregate with a high abrasion value (AAV) was more dependent on the mastic density.

Road performance and thermal-insulation effect in construction of asphalt mixture containing phase-change thermal-insulation agent

Highway construction strategies impact the early damage of asphalt pavement and its sustainability. The pavement quality is directly influenced by the temperature of the asphalt mixture during paving and rolling, but delaying the cooling of the mixture at this stage has rarely been investigated. An asphalt mixture modified with a phase-change thermal-insulation agent (PCTIA) was prepared potentially improve the temperature of the asphalt mixture during construction. The high-temperature, low-temperature, and water-stability performance of asphalt mixtures with different PCTIA contents were analysed. The temperature regulation test was carried out, and the temperature field model of the asphalt pavement paving process was established. Based on the laboratory test and FEM models, the influence of different construction environmental conditions on the thermal-insulation performance of PCTIA and its thermal-insulation mechanism were analysed by using the distribution of temperature, average temperature, and equivalent temperature. The thermal-insulation effect of PCTIA was quantified by latent heat accumulated temperature value (LHATV). Results show that PCTIA improves the high and low-temperature performance of asphalt mixture, and has little effect on water stability. The best overall road performance is achieved at 2.5% PCTIA content. PCTIA can significantly reduce the cooling rate of asphalt mixture, and the distribution of temperature difference and time difference is obviously different in different positions of loose asphalt mixture layer and different external environments. Latent heat accumulated temperature value (LHATV) can characterize the phase-change insulation effect of PCTIA well. The wind speed increases and air temperature-bottom temperature decreases reduced LHATV indicating that too rapid cooling of asphalt mixture would weaken the thermal-insulation performance of PCTIA. Both average temperature and equivalent temperature can reflect the thermal-insulation effect of PCTIA, where the average temperature can be used to analyse the specific phase-change process of PCTIA in asphalt mixture and then analyse the insulation mechanism of PCTIA. Combining average temperature and equivalent temperature, PCTIA had the most application value in low temperature and low wind speed environments. This study aims to explore the effective method of delaying the cooling of high-temperature asphalt mixture from the perspective of phase-change energy storage and explain its mechanism.

Assessment of the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures for bridge pavement

The alternative Stone Mastic Asphalt containing an increased amount of bituminous mastic bituminous mixtures (SMA-MA) have been successfully used for additional protective layers on steel and concrete deck bridges. In this application, the mixtures must feature the desired behaviour at both high and low (i.e. below freezing) temperatures. The SMA-MA mixtures owe their improved low-temperature resistance to the bituminous binder used in them, softer than the binders used in mastic asphalts (MA). This article reports a study comparing the selected low-temperature parameters of the SMA-MA and MA mixtures to the parameters of the bituminous binders used in them. The performance of HMA was evaluated by subjecting the specimens to UTST (Uniaxial Tension Stress Test) and TSRST (Thermal Stress Restrained Specimen Test) tests at the test temperatures from −25°C to −10°C. The low-temperature performance of bituminous binders was, in turn, assessed with the BBR test.

Effect of bio-asphalt as additive on macro and micro properties of TLA modified asphalt and its modification mechanism

Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) modified asphalt has excellent high temperature performance, but its low temperature performance is poor, which limits its engineering application. But bio-asphalt presents relatively excellent low temperature performance. In this paper, TLA and Bio-asphalt were used as additives to prepare composite modified asphalt with excellent properties both at high and low temperatures. The micro modification mechanism of asphalt was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The macro mechanical behavior of asphalt binder was explored through routine physical property test and rheological property test. Finally, the mechanical properties of asphalt mixture were studied through the routine test of asphalt mixture, and the relationship between the macro and micro indexes of asphalt binder and the high and low temperature performance of asphalt mixture was established through grey correlation. The test shows that the mixing mode of TLA, bio-asphalt and base asphalt is physical blending. Modifiers affect the macro mechanical properties of asphalt by changing the distribution of asphalt components, the size of molecular weight, the interaction strength and arrangement of molecules. TLA improves the performance of asphalt binder at high temperature, but weakens the low-temperature performance. The low temperature performance of TLA modified asphalt was significantly improved by adding bio-asphalt at the cost of slightly reducing the high temperature performance. When the content of bio-asphalt is 9%–12%, the bio-asphalt/TLA modified asphalt and its mixture have better performance on high and low temperature properties than that of base asphalt. The micro indexes such as aromatic ring index and weight average molecular weight are good indicators of the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture. Creep rate (m), equivalent brittle point (T1.2) and stiffness modulus (S) can reflect the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixture.

The Effect of Silicone Resin on the Fuel Oil Corrosion Resistance of Asphalt Mixture

Fuel oil leaked onto asphalt pavement will damage the asphalt layer by dissolving the binder, softening the mixture and finally resulting in distress such as raveling and pitting. In the meantime, the skid resistance, high temperature stability and water stability deteriorate dramatically. Silicone resin is a fog sealing material for asphalt pavement. It forms a three-dimensional network structure with -Si-O- chains and therefore shows strong hydrophobicity and chemical stability. This paper looks into the effect of silicone resin on the fuel oil corrosion resistance of asphalt mixture. The contact angle, Cantabro test, water stability test, wheel tracking test and three-point bending test were used to investigate the road performance and the corrosion resistance under diesel and gasoline. It was found that, compared with diesel, the contact angle between gasoline and asphalt is smaller, indicating better compatibility. The gasoline corrosion decreases the properties of asphalt mixture more than that of diesel, which indicates that the compatibility is related to the corrosion effect. The results also show that silicone resin can effectively improve the adhesion, strength, water stability and high- and low-temperature performance of asphalt mixture before and after fuel oil erosion, and the improving effect on asphalt mixture after oil erosion is better.

Influence of low-temperature polyurethane solid-solid PCMs particles on the pavement performance of asphalt mixtures

In order to slow down the cooling rate of the mixture and reduce the low temperature cracking of asphalt pavement in large temperature difference areas, low-temperature polyurethane solid-solid phase change materials (LPSPCMs) were prepared by prepolymer method. The researches show that LPSPCMs have good phase change heat storage performance and thermal stability performance, and can be applied to hot mix asphalt mixtures. The LPSPCMs particles were incorporated into the asphalt mixture, and the road performance of the LPSPCMs particulate asphalt mixture was tested and analyzed and found: as LPSPCMs particles change the abrasion resistance and embedded effect between asphalt mixes, with the increase of LPSPCMs particles, the high-temperature performance of asphalt mixes first increased and then decreased. The water stability of asphalt mixtures gradually decreases with the increase of LPSPCMs particles content because relative to limestone aggregates, LPSPCMs particles adhere poorly to asphalt. The thermal stress restrained specimen test (TSRST) showed that the cracking temperature of the asphalt mixture gradually decreased with the increase of LPSPCMs particles contents because of the phase change temperature control effect of LPSPCMs particles indicated that LPSPCMs particles improve the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures. On this basis, the correlation between the evaluation index of the phase change temperature adjustment effect and the improvement effect of the low-temperature performance of the mixture was established.

Influence of Frequent Freeze–Thaw Cycles on Performance of Asphalt Pavement in High-Cold and High-Altitude Areas

This study explores the temperature changes and freeze–thaw cycles in certain typical high-altitude areas, finding that these areas encounter more than 120, or even more than 200, freeze–thaw cycles per year. Such frequent freeze–thaw cycles deliver significant impact on the performance of asphalt pavements, with cracks becoming a typical problem in high-altitude areas. Such factors as cold weather, large temperature differences, and frequent freeze–thaw cycles have adverse effects on the stress of asphalt pavement materials, resulting in cracks in pavements. By simulating the conditions of such frequent freeze–thaw cycles, this study explores the law of changes in the performance of roads made from asphalt and asphalt mixtures, as well as the low-temperature crack resistance properties of asphalt and asphalt mixtures in frequent freeze–thaw cycles. It is found that the performance of the three different types of asphalt binders used in the test shows basically no change after 50 freeze–thaw cycles, and the asphalt types have a significant effect on the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures. The modified asphalt shows a higher viscosity than the matrix asphalt, with better toughness than that of the matrix asphalt at low temperature. Frequent freeze–thaw cycles significantly influence the low-temperature splitting tensile strength and water stability of asphalt mixtures; with increased freeze–thaw cycles, the splitting strength and freeze–thaw splitting tensile strength ratio will gradually decrease to a significant level. The freeze–thaw conditions are found delivering remarkable influence on the low-temperature splitting tensile strength and water stability of asphalt mixtures. The research results of this study provide a basis for the selection of asphalt pavement materials as well as the optimal design of mixtures in high-altitude area like the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Low-Temperature Performance of Asphalt Mixtures Modified by Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials with Various Graphene Contents

Microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) added to conventional ones can store excessive heat energy and reduce thermal stresses. In this study, melamine–formaldehyde resin phase change microencapsulated PCMs, with different contents of graphene (CG), were added to asphalt mixtures, in order to reduce their low-temperature cracking, induced by thermal stresses. Low-temperature and heat-conducting/storing performance of the obtained mixtures was examined via beam bending tests, semi-circular bending low-temperature performance tests, thermal conductivity tests and volume-specific heat capacity tests. Besides, the prepared asphalt mixtures’ water stability and high-temperature stability values were obtained via freeze-thaw splitting and wheel tracking tests. The low-temperature performance of PCM-modified asphalt mixtures was evaluated via their bending strain energy densities, with one of the PCM-modified asphalt mixtures, namely CGMFPCM3, synthesized by the authors, was 1.7 times higher than that of the common asphalt mixture. Although the dynamic stability of all three PCM-modified mixtures was deteriorated by 68, 50, and 20% compared to the common one, that of CGMFPCM3 still complied with the standard requirement. Thermal conductivity and volume-specific heat capacity of the asphalt mixture at 278.15 K was enhanced by 5 and 43%, respectively, after adding CGMFPCM3. It is recommended for reducing the temperature variation-induced cracking in the asphalt pavement. Thermal conductivity and volume-specific heat capacity can be used for evaluating the temperature-regulating performance of asphalt mixtures.

Laboratory and field investigation of the effect of polymerized pellets on the fatigue and low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures

There are some difficulties attributed to the use of polymer modified binder (PMB) such as low storage stability, low workability, etc. Polymerized pellets (PP), which are added directly to the asphalt mixtures in the mixer of batch plants, are introduced as an alternative to PMB. In this paper, the viscoelastic, fracture, fatigue and low-temperature behavior of the PP modified mixtures were investigated using the direct tension cyclic fatigue, Semi-Circular Beam (SCB) fracture, dynamic modulus and the uniaxial thermal stress and strain tests (UTSST) on both aged and unaged specimens. The results were compared to mixtures containing PMB and control neat hot mix asphalt (HMA). The results indicated that using both polymers led to an improvement in the performance properties of asphalt mixtures, and aging had a substantial adverse impact on the fatigue and low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures especially when modified with PMB or PP. The fatigue, low-temperature and fracture performance of the PP modified mixtures were either better than or equal to the mixtures containing PMB. However, the high aging susceptibility of the PP modified mixtures raises questions for further research.

Modification mechanism and enhanced low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures with graphene-modified phase-change microcapsules

This study explored the modification mechanism of adding commercial graphene (CG) to microcapsule wall materials of the prepared modified phase-change microcapsules (MFPCM) and the modified asphalt. To this end, different amounts of CG and melamine formaldehyde (MF) resin were used as microcapsule wall materials (with n-tetradecane as the core material) to prepare graphene-modified phase-change microcapsule (CGMFPCM) specimens. The microstructure and properties of MFPCM specimens with different contents of CG were also characterized via a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), simultaneous thermal analyzer, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer. Next, the asphalt specimens modified by n-tetradecane, MFPCM, and CGMFPCM with different contents were prepared by the high-speed shearing method. The conventional performances of the modified asphalt specimens were assessed via penetration, softening point, and ductility tests, while their microstructure and performance were investigated by SEM, FT-IR spectrometer, and DSC. The thermodynamic characteristics of both base and modified asphalt specimens were measured via a conductometer. No chemical reactions between the added CG and core or wall materials of MFPCM were revealed. After adding CG, CGMFPCM specimens combined high heat conductivity of CG and phase change performance of MFPCM. Adding 0.45% CG to MFPCM enhanced its thermal efficiency without harming its thermal stability. The modification of base asphalt by phase-change materials was reduced to its physical modification, implying that phase-change materials were simply dispersed in the base asphalt with no chemical reactions. High-temperature heating and high-speed shearing in the preparation of modified asphalt reduced the effective content of phase-change materials. Both microscopic and macroscopic test results confirmed that the low-temperature performance of asphalt was improved after adding CGMFPCM.

Investigation on the mechanism and performance of asphalt and its mixture regenerated by waste engine oil

Waste engine oil (WEO) is planned to be used as a regenerating agent for asphalt pavement materials to regenerate the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recovery their road performance. To enhance the modification effect of WEO on the road performance of asphalt mixture, the furfural extraction oil and epoxy resin are added to compound with the WEO as well. The modern testing techniques were used to reveal the mechanism of WEO-RA from the microscopic scale. The macroscopic properties of asphalt such as the physical, rheological and anti-aging properties of asphalt were investigated to study the regeneration effect of WEO on the technical performance of aged asphalt. The road performance and mechanical properties of recycled asphalt mixtures were investigated extensively. The results show that WEO can be used to recovery the aged asphalt by modifying its components, the modification of WEO on aged asphalt is a physical way. The thermal stability of WEO regenerated asphalt (WEO-RA) is slightly worse than that of the original asphalt, but the WEO-RA has good thermal stability. Physical and high-temperature rheological performance of WEO-RA is almost the same with original asphalt. The low-temperature property rheological performance WEO-RA is two PG better than that of original asphalt. The long-term anti-aging performance of WEO-RA is as good as original asphalt. The performance of WEO-RA has good storage stability. The asphalt mixtures with 0–50% RAP meet the road performance requirement, what’s more, the both the high-temperature and low-temperature performance of asphalt mixture are enhanced with different contents of RAP regenerated by WEO.

Determination and Monitoring of Key Construction Control Indices for Low-Temperature Performance of Asphalt Mixtures Based on BIM Platform

The construction control indices were commonly used to ensure the quality of asphalt layers in the construction process. However, the relationship between the construction control indices and the low-temperature performance of asphalt layers is not clear. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effect of the variations of the construction control indices on the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures to determine the key construction control indices, and propose the method for the monitoring of these indices using the Building Information Modeling (BIM) platform. The low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures was evaluated by the semicircular bend (SCB) test. A new prediction model of critical strain energy release rate was established to evaluate the low-temperature performance of the asphalt layer. Five factors are considered for the low-temperature performance, which are the gradation and asphalt-aggregate ratio in the asphalt mixture plant, rolling temperature, gradation segregation, and temperature segregation. Orthogonal test (OT) results indicated that the order of importance of factors affecting the low-temperature performance is asphalt-stone ratio, gradation, and molding temperature. The influences of gradation segregation and temperature segregation on the low-temperature performance were quantified in this study. Furthermore, the construction control indices were monitored by the BIM platform developed in this research. In the construction process of the asphalt layer, the gradation variation caused by the segregation should be paid more attention to ensure the low-temperature performance of the pavement.

A long-term field study of the ability to predict thermal cracking of asphalt mixtures tested by the Bending Beam Rheometer

If an asphalt mixture's low-temperature performance is evaluated before its application on a pavement, the costs and carbon footprint of materials in pavement maintenance and rehabilitation during cold seasons can be reduced significantly. This goal is met in this long-term study by conducting two experiments that spanned eight years. The Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) was used in this study by following the AASHTO TP125–16 procedure. The first stage consists of documentation of in-field pavement performance and development of a ‘limit criterion’ of the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures on a modified Black Space diagram. The second stage shows the application of this criterion on different asphalt mixtures obtained from seven construction projects in Utah, United States, during the 2018–19 construction season. This evaluation technique helps select proper materials during the decision-making process and serves as a quality acceptance tool during construction.

Feasibility and performance of the Semi-circular Bending test in evaluating the low-temperature performance of asphalt mortar

Semi-circular Bending (SCB) test has been widely used to evaluate the fracture performance of asphalt mixtures, but its potential in evaluating the low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures at mortar scale has been seldom investigated. This study aims to explore the feasibility and evaluate the performance of SCB tests in evaluating the low-temperature performance of asphalt mortar. To quantify the influence of the crushing and local creep at the top of the SCB test samples on testing results, the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method was used to characterize the displacement field of mortar samples during the test under different loading rates at −10 °C. The effects of binder film thickness, filler content, and aging condition on low-temperature performance of asphalt mortar were investigated by SCB test. The experimental design set a fixed nominal maximum aggregate size of 4.75 mm. The test matrix considered three binder film thicknesses (9, 10 and 11 µm) and four filler contents (8.5%, 9.4%, 10.5% and 11%) at two aging conditions (short-term and long-term aging). Two cracking indexes including before-peak slope (Sbp) and fracture energy (Gf) were used to evaluate the low-temperature performance. According to the results of DIC analysis, the loading rate of 3 mm/min was proposed to be the optimum for the SCB mortar test at −10 °C. It was concluded that the SCB mortar test can effectively differentiate the low-temperature cracking performance of different asphalt mortars under different aging conditions. Thicker binder film thickness can significantly decrease the aging rate of asphalt mortar from short-term aging to long-term aging, whereas the effect of filler content on ageing rate is not statistically significant.

The Impact of Recycled Concrete Aggregate on the Stiffness, Fatigue, and Low-Temperature Performance of Asphalt Mixtures for Road Construction

The need for road (re)construction materials is constantly growing. At the same time, there is a limited quantity of new, high-quality materials available and a buildup of secondary/recycled construction materials. One possible solution may be the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in asphalt mixtures instead of natural aggregate (NA), which also promotes economic and environmental sustainability. The potential use of fine and coarse RCA in road asphalt mixtures is analyzed in this work. Nine asphalt mixtures were tested for base course layers, where RCA was used as a NA substitute. The impact of the quantity of RCA (up to 45% by mass) on the resulting physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures was investigated, and consequently compared with the properties of a reference control mixture produced with NA only. Results reveal that the addition of RCA requires higher bitumen in comparison to the control mixture (up to 1%). Consequently, mixtures with RCA had 15−20% lower stiffness and up to 26% higher critical fatigue strain value (ε6). Although RCA mixtures contained more bitumen, their low-temperature resistance was slightly inferior compared with the control mixture (failure temperatures were up to 4.3 °C higher). In conclusion, asphalt mixtures with up to 45% RCA can be used without substantially reducing performance.
