Awareness and perceptions of contaminants in the Dehcho and Sahtú Regions of the Northwest Territories

ABSTRACT The development and dissemination of health messaging is a critical component of reducing health disparities. Participants (n = 87) from a human biomonitoring study in six Dene communities responded to a survey about health communication regarding contaminants. The survey included questions on awareness of health messages and risk perceptions related to country foods and contaminants. The vast majority of participants reported eating country foods (99%) and heard that country foods had beneficial nutrients (90%). Seventy per cent of respondents had heard or seen messages about fish with high levels of mercury, and 60% had concerns about the safety or quality of country foods they consumed. Respondents who reported decreasing the number of fish they ate since hearing the messages about fish and mercury had lower (p = 0.04) mercury concentration in hair, compared to those who had not heard the messages. However, no differences in hair mercury were observed for respondents who reported to have changed their fishing location, chosen smaller fish or eaten less predatory fish since hearing the messages. Results indicate the need to examine reasons for self-reported behaviour changes, in addition to awareness. The conclusions of this study can inform the development of messaging and risk management decisions about contaminants within Indigenous populations.

Capture and sensing of mercury ions by self-assembly supramolecular carbene complexes on tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensors

Addressing the global issue of mercury contamination and its ecological impacts, this study introduces a cutting-edge approach with tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) sensors coated with carbene precursors for real-time mercury ion monitoring. These precursors, assembled on the sensors, enable precise detection of low mercury concentrations, a critical advancement for environmental protection. The study achieved significant advancements in the sensing of mercury ions by utilizing mono- and dicationic carbene precursors that self-assemble on the TFBG sensors. The sensor coated with 3HP-C3COOC2-SR3 exhibited an average sensitivity of 0.004 dB/ppm and a linearity R2 of 0.971, highlighting its exceptional capability to detect low mercury concentrations with high precision. Notably, one sensor demonstrated exceptional sensitivity and accuracy, marking significant progress in environmental sensing technology and offering a method for safeguarding ecosystems and human health from mercury’s harmful effects.

Low mercury concentrations in a Greenland glacial fjord attributed to oceanic sources

As the role of the Greenland Ice Sheet in the Arctic mercury (Hg) budget draws scrutiny, it is crucial to understand mercury cycling in glacial fjords, which control exchanges with the ocean. We present full water column measurements of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in Sermilik Fjord, a large fjord in southeast Greenland fed by multiple marine-terminating glaciers, whose circulation and water mass transformations have been extensively studied. We show that THg (0.23-1.1 pM) and MeHg (0.02-0.17 pM) concentrations are similar to those in nearby coastal waters, while the exported glacially-modified waters are relatively depleted in inorganic mercury (Hg(II)), suggesting that inflowing ocean waters from the continental shelf are the dominant source of mercury species to the fjord. We propose that sediments initially suspended in glacier meltwaters scavenge particle-reactive Hg(II) and are subsequently buried, making the fjord a net sink of oceanic mercury.

Egg Mercury Concentration and Egg Size Varies with Position in the Laying Sequence in two Songbird Species.

In birds, mercury embryotoxicity can occur through the transfer of mercury from the female to her eggs. Maternal transfer of mercury can vary by egg position in the laying sequence, with first-laid eggs often exhibiting greater mercury concentrations than subsequently laid eggs. We studied egg mercury concentration, mercury burden (total amount of mercury in the egg), and egg morphometrics by egg position in the laying sequence for two songbirds: tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and house wrens (Troglodytes aedon). Egg mercury concentration in the second egg laid was 14% lower for tree swallows and 6% lower for house wrens in comparison with the first egg laid. These results indicate that in both species, after an initial relatively high transfer of mercury into the first egg laid, a smaller amount of mercury was transferred to the second egg laid. This lower mercury concentration persisted among all subsequently laid eggs (eggs three to eight) in tree swallows (all were 14%-16% lower than egg 1), but mercury concentrations in subsequently laid house wren eggs (eggs three to seven) returned to levels observed in the first egg laid (all were 1% lower to 3% greater than egg 1). Egg size increased with position in the laying sequence in both species; the predicted volume of egg 7 was 5% and 6% greater than that of egg 1 in tree swallows and house wrens, respectively. This change was caused by a significant increase in egg width, but not egg length, with position in the laying sequence. The percentage of decline in mercury concentration with position in the laying sequence was considerably lower in tree swallows and house wrens compared with other bird taxonomic groups, suggesting that there are key differences in the maternal transfer of mercury into songbird eggs compared with other birds. Finally, we performed simulations to evaluate how within-clutch variation in egg mercury concentrations affected estimates of mean mercury concentrations in each clutch and the overall sampled population, which has direct implications for sampling designs. Determination of Low Concentrations of Mercury Based on the Electrodeposition Time.

Soil plays a crucial role in human health through its impact on food and habitation. However, it often contains toxic heavy metals, with mercury being particularly hazardous when methylated. Currently, high-sensitivity, rapid detection of mercury is achievable only through electrochemical measurements. These measurements require pretreatment of the soil sample and the preparation of a calibration curve tailored to the sample's condition. In this study, we developed a method to determine the environmental standard value of mercury content in soil by significantly reducing the pretreatment process. Our approach involves analyzing current peaks from electrodeposition times using specific electrodes and solvent settings. This method demonstrates low error rates under low concentration conditions and can detect mercury levels as low as 0.5 ppb in soil leachate and reagent dilution series. This research facilitates the determination of low mercury concentrations in solutions containing various soil micro-compounds without the need for calibration curves.

A traceable and continuous flow calibration method for gaseous elemental mercury at low ambient concentrations

Abstract. The monitoring of low gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentrations in the atmosphere requires continuous high-resolution measurements and corresponding calibration capabilities. Currently, continuous calibration for GEM is still an issue at ambient concentrations (1–2 ng m−3). This paper presents a continuous flow calibration for GEM, traceable to NIST 3133 Standard Reference Material (SRM). This calibration approach was tested using a direct mercury analyser based on atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction (Zeeman AAS). The produced continuous flow of GEM standard was obtained via the reduction of Hg2+ from liquid NIST 3133 SRM and used for the traceable calibration of the Zeeman AAS device. Measurements of atmospheric GEM using the calibrated Zeeman AAS were compared with two methods: (1) manual gold amalgamation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) calibrated with the chemical reduction of NIST 3133 and (2) automated gold amalgamation AFS calibrated using the mercury bell-jar syringe technique. The comparisons showed that a factory-calibrated Zeeman AAS device underestimates concentrations under 10 ng m−3 by up to 35 % relative to the two other methods of determination. However, when a calibration based on NIST 3133 SRM was used to perform a traceable calibration of the Zeeman AAS, the results were more comparable with other methods. The expanded relative combined uncertainty for the Zeeman AAS ranged from 8 % for measurements at the 40 ng m−3 level to 91.6 % for concentrations under 5 ng m−3 using the newly developed calibration system. High uncertainty for measurements performed under 5 ng m−3 was mainly due to instrument noise and concentration variation in the samples.

Exceptionally low mercury concentrations and fluxes from the 2021 and 2022 eruptions of Fagradalsfjall volcano, Iceland

Mercury (Hg) is naturally released by volcanoes and geothermal systems, but the global flux from these natural sources is highly uncertain due to a lack of direct measurements and uncertainties with upscaling Hg/SO2 mass ratios to estimate Hg fluxes. The 2021 and 2022 eruptions of Fagradalsfjall volcano, southwest Iceland, provided an opportunity to measure Hg concentrations and fluxes from a hotspot/rift system using modern analytical techniques. We measured gaseous Hg and SO2 concentrations in the volcanic plume by near-source drone-based sampling and simultaneous downwind ground-based sampling. Mean Hg/SO2 was an order of magnitude higher at the downwind locations relative to near-source data. This was attributed to the elevated local background Hg at ground level (4.0 ng m−3) likely due to emissions from outgassing lava fields. The background-corrected plume Hg/SO2 mass ratio (5.6 × 10−8) therefore appeared conservative from the near-source to several hundred meters distant, which has important implications for the upscaling of volcanic Hg fluxes based on SO2 measurements. Using this ratio and the total SO2 flux from both eruptions, we estimate the total mass of gaseous Hg released from the 2021 and 2022 Fagradalsfjall eruptions was 46 ± 33 kg, equivalent to a flux of 0.23 ± 0.17 kg d−1. This is the lowest Hg flux estimate in the literature for active open-conduit volcanoes, which range from 0.6 to 12 kg d−1 for other hotspot/rift volcanoes, and 0.5–110 kg d−1 for arc volcanoes. Our results suggest that Icelandic volcanic systems are fed from an especially Hg-poor mantle. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the aerial near-source plume Hg measurement is feasible with a drone-based active sampling configuration that captures all gaseous and particulate Hg species, and recommend this as the preferred method for quantifying volcanic Hg emissions going forward.

Phytoremediation Potential of the Coastal Plain Willow Salix caroliniana for Heavy Metals with Emphasis on Mercury

Remediation of heavy metals is a complex, difficult, and expensive exercise and commonly involves relocation of the problem from one place to another (e.g., a contaminated site to a hazardous waste landfill). Alternatively, bioremediation can be used so that metals can be sequestered into the woody portion of the plant, where they are fixed into the organic matter and remain undisturbed for extended periods (e.g., wetland area soils). A species of willow (Salix caroliniana) was investigated to ascertain its potential for use in the bioremediation of mercury. It was found that the plant did bioaccumulate mercury and did so especially in the wood compared to its leaves (8.8 to 1 ratio in the mercury activity; activity of 12,071 to 1164). While there is moderate potential for use in bioremediation, the measured concentration in the wood was quite low (average of 11.91 ppb). The low concentration was caused by the location of the sampled trees in environments that were either pristine or had low soil concentrations of mercury. Furthermore, 90% of the mercury accumulated in the leaves appeared to be adsorbed via atmospheric deposition in southwest Florida where there are minimal sources of anthropogenic mercury, but the region is impacted by Saharan dust, which does contain mercury.

Glacial Erosion Drives High Summer Mercury Exports from the Yukon River, Canada.

Mercury concentrations and yields in the Yukon River are the highest of the world's six largest panarctic drainages. Permafrost thaw has been implicated as the main driver of these high values. Alternative sources include mercury released from glacial melt and erosion, atmospheric mercury pollution, or surface mining. To determine the summer source and speciation of mercury across the Yukon River basin within Canada, we sampled water from 12 tributaries and the mainstem during July 2021. The total (unfiltered) mercury concentration in the glacier-fed White River was 57 ng/L, >10 times higher than all other sampled tributaries. The White River's high total mercury concentrations were driven by suspended sediment and persisted ∼300 km downstream of glacierized headwaters. Total mercury concentrations were lowest (typically <2 ng/L) in tributaries downstream of still-water landscape features (e.g., lakes and settling ponds), suggesting these features are effective sinks for sediment-bound mercury. Low total mercury concentrations (∼2 ng/L) were also observed in five tributaries across diverse thawing permafrost landscapes. These results suggest that glacial erosion and meltwater transport, not permafrost, drive enhanced exports of mercury with suspended sediment. Mercury exports may decline as glacial watersheds pass peak water. Other factors, including mercury released from permafrost thaw, are minor components at present.

Total Hg levels distribution in fish and fish products and their relationships with fish types, weights, and protein and lipid contents: A multivariate analysis.

This study investigates the mercury (Hg) levels distribution in fish and fish products and their relationships with fish types, weights, protein, and lipid contents in Qatar. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to analyze the influence of lipids and protein content on Hg accumulation in the fish tissues. Additionally, the impact of Hg concentration and fish consumption on the estimated weekly intake (EWI). The PCA results showed that Hg contamination levels are primarily affected by protein-lipid content in predatory species. The results showed that high lipid content reflected lower Hg levels and that high Hg levels in fish with high lipid content indicated a polluted environment. The finding of the PCA of EWI, consumption, and Mercury concentration indicate that EWI is highly correlated to Mercury concentration except in the case of low Mercury concentration.

Differences in nutrient and undesirable substance concentrations in Maurolicus muelleri across the Bay of Biscay, Norwegian fjords, and the North Sea

IntroductionWe are having pressing issues of global food insecurity and malnutrition. Mesopelagic communities in the North Atlantic have been estimated to have high biomasses of organisms. Some of these low-trophic organisms are known to be nutrient-dense and may thus contribute to food security and nutrition. Here, we aim to understand the variation in nutrient and undesirable substance concentrations in a common mesopelagic species, Maurolicus muelleri in the North Atlantic Ocean.MethodsWe sampled the M. muelleri from the Bay of Biscay (BB), Norwegian fjords (NF), and the North Sea (NS). The concentrations of micro- and macronutrients, undesirable metals, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were measured in composite whole fish samples.ResultsWe found no difference across the sampling areas in the selected micronutrients except that the NF and NS samples had higher vitamin A1 concentrations than the BB samples. The NF samples had higher concentrations of fat, fatty acids, and POPs but lower concentrations of cadmium than the BB and NS samples; the differences in fat and fatty acids were only marginal in the NF-BB pair. The BB samples had lower arsenic concentrations than the NS samples, and lower concentrations of erucic acid and mercury than the NF and NS samples. Comparing the measured values against existing EU regulation values for nutrients and undesirable substances for human consumption, we found that the samples from NS and BB may cause food safety concerns due to their high cadmium concentrations, while the M. muelleri from all the sampling areas are qualified as good sources of iron, selenium, vitamin A1, and ω-3 fatty acids.DiscussionThis study confirms that M. muelleri from the North Atlantic Ocean may play an important role in food security and nutrition. However, potential variations in nutrient and undesirable substance concentrations related to seasonality, fish body size, and maturity level shall be taken into consideration prior to exploiting such a marine resource. Further understanding of trophic ecology, life cycles, and productivity of M. muelleri is essential to investigate the drivers behind the observed variation in nutrient and undesirable substance concentrations.

Rapid removal of low concentration Hg(II) from water by iron nanoparticles: Excellent performance and unique mechanism

Mercury is highly toxic. It is a great threat to human health even with low-concentration mercury ingestion. Herein, we systematically explored the performances and mechanisms of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) and sulfurized nano zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) for low concentration Hg(II). The S0 produced in the sulfidation process has a strong immobilization effect on Hg0 and reduces the volatilization of Hg0 into the air, which prevents secondary pollution. We discovered some unique mechanisms that occur only in the rapid treatment of low concentrations of mercury: the theory that sulfidation will inhibit the formation of FeOOH and thus enhance the reduction properties of S-nZVI was proposed for the first time; The formation of Fe(OH)x is no longer able to promote adsorption and coprecipitation for Hg(II) but instead hinders reduction on Hg(II). These findings provide insights into the purification of water containing low concentrations of Hg(II) by iron nanoparticles.

Responses of the structure and function of microbes in Yellow River Estuary sediments to different levels of mercury

The health and stability of the estuary of the Yellow River ecosystem have come under increasing pressure from land-based inputs of heavy metals. While it is known that heavy metals affect the function and health of the microbial community, there remains little knowledge on the responses of the microbial community to heavy metals, particularly highly toxic mercury. The research aimed to characterize the responses of the sediment microbial community of the estuary of the Yellow River to different levels of mercury stress. Estuary sediment samples were collected for microbial community analysis, measurement of mercury [including total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg)], and measurement of other physicochemical factors, including pH, total organic carbon (TOC), sulfide, iron ratio (Fe3+/Fe2+), ammonium salt (NH4+), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The application of 16S rRNA sequencing identified 60 phyla of bacteria, dominated by Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes. Stations with higher THg or MeHg and lower microbial abundance and diversity were generally distributed further outside of the estuary. Besides mercury, the measured physicochemical factors had impacts on microbial diversities and distribution. Metagenomics assessment of three stations, representative of low, moderate, and high mercury concentrations and measured physicochemical factors, revealed the abundances and functions of predicted genes. The most abundant genes regulating the metabolic pathways were categorized as metabolic, environmental information processing, and genetic information processing, genes. At stations with high levels of mercury, the dominant genes were related to energy metabolism, signal transport, and membrane transport. Functional genes with a mercury-resistance function were generally in the mer system (merA, merC, merT, merR), alkylmercury lyase, and metal-transporting ATPase. These results offer insight into the microbial community structure of the sediments in the Yellow River Estuary and the microbial function of mercury resistance under mercury stress.

Comparative genomic damage among three shark species with different habits: Sublethal impacts of human origin in a protected island environment in the South Atlantic

Elasmobranchs can bioaccumulate and biomagnify pollutants. However, few studies are directed to the effects of pollutants on the health of these animals, and in most cases, are limited to the analysis of biochemical markers. Thus, the incidence of genomic damage among shark species inhabiting a protected ocean island in the South Atlantic was investigated in association with the analysis of pollutants in seawater sample. High levels of genomic damage were identified, especially in Negaprion brevirostris and Galeocerdo cuvier, in addition to interspecific variations that may be related to characteristics such as animal size, metabolism and habits. High concentrations of Surfactants were observed in seawater sample, in addition to low concentrations of Cadmium, Lead, Copper, Chromium, Zinc, Manganese, and Mercury. The results evidenced the potential of shark species as a bioindicator of environmental quality and allowed assessing the anthropic impact on the archipelago, which currently drives its economy through tourism.

Association of Blood Mercury Level with Liver Enzymes in Korean Adults: An Analysis of 2015–2017 Korean National Environmental Health Survey

Increased liver enzymes as a result of exposure to mercury and their toxic effects are not well understood in Korea at the population level. The effect of blood mercury concentration on alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was evaluated after adjusting for sex, age, obesity, alcohol consumption habit, smoking, and exercise parameters in 3712 adults. The risk of abnormal liver function was measured using a multiple logistic regression analysis. Blood mercury concentration was divided into quartiles, and liver enzyme levels were compared for each quartile. ALT and AST levels were 10-20% higher in the second, third, and fourth quartiles compared to the first quartile. The risk of liver dysfunction or elevated liver enzymes was significantly higher in the second, third, and fourth quartiles than in the first quartile. As blood mercury levels increased, liver enzymes and mercury-induced hepatotoxicity increased. The increase in liver enzymes caused by mercury was more pronounced in the low-mercury concentration range. To reduce the long-standing problem of abnormal liver enzymes and liver function in Korea and other similar settings, it is important to decrease exposure to mercury through effective implementation of specific health and environmental strategies.

The effects of mercury exposure on Amazonian fishes: An investigation of potential biomarkers

Exposure to mercury can interfere with the expression of proteins and enzymes, compromise important pathways, such as apoptosis and glucose metabolism, and even induce the expression of metallothioneins. In this study, analytical techniques were used to determine the concentration of total mercury (THg) in muscle and liver tissue, protein pellets, and spots [using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS)], and molecular techniques were used to identify metalloproteins present in mercury-associated protein spots. Thirty individuals from three different fish species, Cichla sp. (n = 10), Brachyplatystoma filamentosum (n = 10), and Semaprochilodus sp. (n = 10) from the Brazilian Amazon were used. Oxidative stress indicators [such as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), a marker of lipid peroxidation (LPO)] and the possible expression of metallothioneins in muscle and liver tissues were investigated. The two piscivorous species, Cichla sp. and B. filamentosum, presented the highest concentrations of mercury in their hepatic tissue, 1219 ± 15.00 and 1044 ± 13.6 μg kg−1, respectively, and in their muscle tissue, 101 ± 1.30 μg kg−1 and 87.4 ± 0.900 μg kg−1, respectively. The non-carnivorous species Semaprochilodus sp. had comparatively low concentrations of mercury in both its hepatic (852 ± 11.1 μg kg−1) and muscle (71.4 ± 0.930 μg kg−1) tissues. The presence of mercury was identified in 24 protein spots using GFAAS; concentrations ranged from 11.5 to 787 μg kg−1, and mass spectrometry identified 21 metal-binding proteins. The activities of GSH-Px, CAT, and SOD, related to oxidative stress, decreased proportionally as tissue Hg concentrations increased, while the levels of LPO markers increased, indicating the presence of stress. Our study results demonstrate possible mercury interference in oxidative stress markers (GSH-Px, CAT, SOD, and LPO), in addition to the identification of 21 metal-binding proteins as possible biomarkers of mercury exposure in fish.

The paper presents the results of research on mercury concentration in mushrooms collected in the Khabarovsk Territory, including the town, in the fall of 2022. The research shows that the mercury concentration in fruit body can widely vary dependent on the type and place of growth. Even for the same mushrooms type fruit bodies indicators can vary from several times to 2 orders. At this, the stems accumulate less mercury than the caps, and tubular mushrooms accumulate less mercury than lamellar ones. The study shows a surpass of maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for mercury index in more than half lamellar mushrooms, not revealed in tubular mushrooms. The maximum concentration of Hg (14 mg/kg of dry matter) and the maximum coefficient of biological absorption (45) were revealed for common meadow mushroom (Agaricus campestris), collected in the Khabarovsk downtown lawn. The other champignons there contained mercury 5–7 times less. The lowest mercury concentrations were found in polypore mushrooms. Concentration of mercury in them did not exceed 0.05 mg/kg of dry solids content, and the coefficient of biological absorption was in the range of 0.08–0.4.

Ln Based Metal-organic Framework for Fluorescence "Turn Off-On" Sensing of Hg2.

A highly luminescent Ln-MOF [La3(NDC)4(DMF)3(H2O)4]n, (NDC = 2, 6 naphthalen dicarboxylic acid) was designed and synthesized. The structure was characterized by x-ray single structure determination, TGA, IR spectra and PXRD and fluorescence spectroscopy. The structure shows high fluorescence intensity based on the presence of lanthanide metal and ligand. In the presence of I-, the emission can be effectively quenched introducing turn off system. Furthermore, the synthesized Ln-MOF can recognize Hg (II) by showing fluorescence turn-on signal because of the high affinity between Hg (II) and I-. Moreover, the high selectivity and sensitivity of the synthesized Ln-MOF makes it quit qualified for determination of the low concentration of mercury (2.00nM).

Assessment of mercury contamination and food composition in commercially important marine fishes in the southern South China Sea

This study examined mercury contamination in common commercial marine fish caught from the South China Sea. Specifically, the muscle tissue mercury levels of four species (n = 10), one each from the Scombridae, Serranidae, Carangidae, and Nemipteridae families, was examined using a direct mercury analyzer (MA-3000); their trophic level was assessed using TrophLab tm software. Provisional tolerable weekly intake levels (PTWI) and the relationships between length–mercury concentration and weight–mercury concentration of species using Pearson correlation coefficient were identified. Samples from the Serranidae family had the highest muscle mercury concentrations, followed by Nemipteridae, Carangidae, and Scombridae in descending order. The results show that the highest mercury concentrations were found in Epinephelus heniochus (2.34 ±0.22μg/g) from the Serranidae family, while the lowest mercury concentrations were found in Scomberomorus guttatus (0.05 ± 0.00 μg/g) from the Scombridae family. This study suggests that factors such as size, composition of food in the fish gut, and habitat had the greatest influence on the mercury levels found in these fishes. The PTWI data showed that only 31% of the species in the current study had not exceeded the recommended safety level of 1.6 μg/kg BW/week methylmercury intake. A consideration of PTWI can help to reduce fish consumption risks to consumers by providing a recommended consumption level of each fish.

Metalloproteomic approach to liver tissue of rats exposed to mercury

The aims of this study were to identify mercury-associated protein spots in the liver tissue of rats exposed to low concentrations of mercury and to elucidate the physiological and functional aspects of the proteins identified in the protein spots. Therefore, proteomic analysis of the liver tissue of Wistar rats exposed to mercury chloride (4.60 μg kg−1 in Hg2+) was performed for thirty days (Hg-30 group) and sixty days (Hg-60 group). The proteomic profile of the liver tissue of the rats was obtained by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D-PAGE), and the determinations of total mercury in the liver tissue, pellets and protein spots were performed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). ImageMaster 2D Platinum 7.0 software was used to identify the differentially expressed mercury-associated protein spots, which were then characterized by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The determinations by GFAAS indicated a total mercury bioaccumulation of 2812% in the Hg-30 group and 3298% in the Hg-60 group and 10 mercury-associated protein spots with a concentration range of 51 ± 1.0 to 412 ± 6.00 mg kg−1 in the 2D PAGE gels from the liver tissue of the Hg-60 group. The LC–MS/MS analyses allowed the identification of 11 metal binding proteins in mercury-associated protein spots that presented fold change with upregulation >1.5, downregulation < −1.7 or that were expressed only in the Hg-60 group. Using the FASTA sequences of the proteins identified in the mercury-associated protein spots, bioinformatics analyses were performed to elucidate the physiological and functional aspects of the metal binding proteins, allowing us to infer that enzymes such as GSTM2 presented greater mercury concentrations and downregulation < −3; Acaa2 and Bhmt, which showed expression only in the Hg-60 group, among others, may act as potential mercury exposure biomarkers.
