Assessing Insider Attacks and Privacy Leakage in Managed IoT Systems for Residential Prosumers

The transition towards the massive penetration of Renewable Energy Resources (RESs) into the electricity system requires the implementation of the Smart Grid (SG) paradigm with innovative control systems and equipment. In this new context, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), including renewable sources and responsive loads, should be redesigned to enable aggregators to provide ancillary services. In fact, by using the Internet of Things (IoT) systems, aggregators can explore energy usage patterns from residential users, also known as prosumers and predict their services. This is undoubtedly important especially for SGs facing the presence of several RESs, where understanding the optimal match between demand and production is desirable from several points of view. However, revealing energy patterns and information can be of concern for privacy if the entire system is not properly designed. In this article, by assuming that the security of low-level communication protocols is guaranteed, we focus our attention at higher levels, in particular at the application level of managed IoT systems used by aggregators. In this regard, we provide an overview of the best practices and outline possible privacy leakages risks along with a list of correlated attacks.

Machina.NET: A Library for Programming and Real-Time Control of Industrial Robots

Machina is a .NET library for programming and control of industrial robots. It is designed to build applications that interface with robotic devices in real time. The library features a high-level API of simple, device-agnostic action verbs to issue motion requests to robots, and translates them to device-specific instructions using low-level communication protocols and managing priority queues. It also features a set of execution-related events to notify users of changes in the asynchronous state of the robot, fostering programming styles that are reactive rather than prescriptive. These features promote an enactive approach to robotics, and provide an immediate and intuitive entry point to real-time robot control, making Machina particularly suitable for controlling systems that require concurrent responsiveness to sensory or user input. While Machina currently supports mostly six-axis industrial robotic arms, it can be easily extended to any actuable device that moves in three-dimensional space, such as 3D printers, CNC machines, drones, robotic toys, etc. Machina is geared towards users in the creative fields, like designers, artists, makers and creative coders, and promotes features such as interactivity, intuitiveness, feedback, concurrency and cross-platform compatibility, over performance or feature-fullness. We hope this framework will help ease access for novice users to the field of robotics.

A model driven architecture for the development of smart card software

Smart cards are portable integrated devices that store and process data. Speed, security and portability properties enable smart cards to have a widespread usage in various fields including telecommunication, transportation and the credit card industry. However, the development of smart card applications is a difficult task due to hardware and software constraints. The necessity of the knowledge of both a very low-level communication protocol and a specific hardware causes smart card software development to be a big challenge for the developers. Written codes tend to be error-prone and hard to debug because of the limited memory resources. Hence, in this study, we introduce a model driven architecture which aims to facilitate smart card software development by both providing an easy design of smart card systems and automatic generation of the required smart card software from the system models. Differentiating from the previous work, the study in here contributes to the field by both providing various smart card metamodels in different abstraction layers and defines model-to-model transformations between the instances of these metamodels in order to support the realization of the same system on different smart card platforms. Applicability of the proposed methodology is shown for rapid and efficient application development in two major smart card frameworks: Java Card and ZeitControl Basic Card. Lessons learned during the industrial usage of the architecture are also reported in the paper. Finally, we discuss how the components of the architecture can be integrated in order to provide a domain-specific language for smart card software.

A Client/Server Message Oriented Middleware for Mobile Robots

Mobile robots offer a wide range of applications in educational and research fields. Sensing, planning, control, reasoning, and learning are human-like capabilities that can be artificially replicated in a computer-based robotic system as software applications. The development of software for mobile robot application is a complex task due to the fact that the wide range of robots are composed of heterogeneous hardware components which need different device software drivers and different low-level communication protocols. This paper presents a Client/Server Message Oriented Middle for Mobile Robots which separates the user application from the hardware and low-level implementation. The middleware has been already ported to two different robotic platforms. As a case study, a path planning and self-localization algorithms have been implemented and applied successfully.

Industrial Robot Programming and UPnP Services Orchestration for the Automation of Factories

The integration of equipment and other devices built into industrial robot cells with modern Ethernet interface technologies and low-cost mass produced devices (such as vision systems, laser scanners, force torque-sensors, PLCs and PDAs etc.) enables integrators to offer more powerful and smarter solutions. Nevertheless, the programming of all these devices efficiently requires very specific knowledge about them, such as their hardware architectures and specific programming languages as well as details about the system's low level communication protocols. To address these issues, this paper describes and analyses the Plug-and-Play architecture. This is one of the most interesting service-oriented architectures (SOAs) available, which exhibits characteristics that are well adapted to industrial robotics cells. To validate their programming features and applicability, a test bed was specially designed. This provides a new graphical service orchestration which was implemented using Workflow Foundation 4 of .NET. The obtained results allowed us to verify that the use of integration schemes based on SOAs reduces the system integration time and is better adapted to industrial robotic cell system integrators.

Long-range dependence and on-chip processor traffic

Long-range dependence is a property of stochastic processes that has an important impact on network performance, especially on the buffer usage in routers. We analyze the presence of long-range dependence in on-chip processor traffic and we study the impact of long-range dependence on networks-on-chip. long-range dependence in communication traces of processor ip s at the cycle-accurate level. We also study the impact of long-range dependence on a real network-on-chip using the SocLib simulation environment and traffic generators of our own. Our experiments show that long-range dependence is not an ubiquitous property of on-chip processor traffic and that its impact on the network-on-chip is highly correlated with the low level communication protocol used.

Open MPI: A High Performance, Flexible Implementation of MPI Point-to-Point Communications

Open MPI's point-to-point communications abstractions, described in this paper, handle several different communications scenarios, with a portable, high-performance design and implementation. These abstractions support two types of low-level communication protocols – general purpose point-to-point communications, like the OpenIB interface, and MPI-like interfaces, such as Myricom's MX library. Support for the first type of protocols makes use of all communications resources available to a given application run, with optional support for communications error recovery. The latter provides a interface layer, relying on the communications library to guarantee correct MPI message ordering and matching. This paper describes the three point-to-point communications protocols currently supported in the Open MPI implementation, supported with performance data. This includes comparisons with other MPI implementations using the OpenIB, MX, and GM communications libraries.

Self-Organizing and Adaptive Peer-to-Peer Network

In this paper, an algorithm that forms a dynamic and self-organizing network is demonstrated. The hypothesis of this work is that in order to achieve a resilient and adaptive peer-to-peer (P2P) network, each network node must proactively maintain a minimum number of edges. Specifically, low-level communication protocols are not sufficient by themselves to achieve high-service availability, especially in the case of ad hoc or dynamic networks with a high degree of node addition and deletion. The concept has been evaluated within a P2P agent application in which each agent has a goal to maintain a preferred number of connections to a number of service providing agents. Using this algorithm, the agents update a weight value associated with each connection, based on the perceived utility of the connection to the corresponding agent. This utility function can be a combination of several node or edge parameters, such as degree k of the target node, or frequency of the message response from the node. This weight is updated using a set of Hebbian-style learning rules, such that the network as a whole exhibits adaptive self-organizing behavior. The principal result is the finding that by limiting the connection neighborhood within the overlay topology, the resulting P2P network can be made highly resilient to targeted attacks on high-degree nodes, while maintaining search efficiency.

Design of a flexible distributed data acquisition controller with the 80C51FA microcontroller

A distributed, analogue/digital data acquisition controller implementing the unique programmable counter array (PCA) available on the 80C51FA microcontroller together with its automatic address recognition as a low level communication protocol has been developed. Emphasis is placed on the design of a more flexible distributed controller which is capable of simultaneously handling up to 16 channels of analogue and 16 channels of digital I/O using versions of the industry standard I/O modules. Each individual channel can be independently configured as either input or output. These controllers can be linked together in a multidrop network configuration with a PC as the primary controller. An increase in product functionality at a lower cost is thereby achieved.
