An operational collision avoidance system is being used by McDonnell in the St. Louis area. The system has demonstrated a capability for providing timely collision avoidance maneuver information to pilots engaged in supersonic, as well as low speed, maneuvering flight. The application of the system to civil flight operations (particularly the airlines) has raised questions regarding the economical, technological, and operational suitability of the McDonnell Eliminate Range “O” System (EROS). This discussion answers these questions.

Public awareness and concern with air pollution in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

The public attitudes survey involving St. Louis City, St. Louis County, and Madison and St. Clair Counties, Illinois, was completed and published in the fall of 1964. A total of 1002 respondents gave needed information for the development of an acceptable abatement program. Substantial proportions from the study area expressed the view that they have had some negative reaction to the quality of the air. These respondents indicated that air pollution meant, primarily, odor and smoke with residents of some localities indicating other significant elements. The interviewed persons felt that factories and businesses were the prime causal agents in the existence of air pollution. Over 90 percent of all respondents felt that some governmental agency should do something about air pollution in the St. Louis area, with some bi-state metropolitan agency being the principal choice. Electric Analog Computers and Hydrogeologic System Analysis in Illinoisa

AbstractElectric analog computers are playing an important role in the forecast of consequences of developing nonhomogeneous aquifers in Illinois having highly irregular shapes and boundaries and a wide variety of head and discharge controls. Analog computers are versatile and simple equipment, of low to moderate cost, with which ground‐water development schemes can be rapidly and accurately tested and the relative merits of alternate choices of development can be appraised.The electric analog computer used by the Illinois State Water Survey consists of an analog model and excitation‐response apparatus, i.e., waveform generator, pulse generator and oscilloscope. Analog models are regular arrays of resistors and capacitors and are scaled‐down versions of aquifers and confining beds where present. Resistors are inversely proportional to the coefficients of transmissibility and vertical permeability aquifers and the coefficients of leakage of confining beds. Capacitors store electrostatic energy in a manner analogous to the storage of water in the aquifer. The behavior of the electrical network is described by an equation which has the same form as the finite‐difference equation for nonsteady state two or three‐dimensional flow of ground water. Electrical units (voltage, coulombs, amperes and seconds) and corresponding hydraulic units (feet, gallons, gallons per day and days) are connected by 4 scale factors.Excitation‐response equipment force electrical energy in the proper time phase into the analog model and measure energy levels within the energy‐dissipative resistor‐capacitor network. Oscilloscope traces, i.e., time‐voltage graphs, are analogous to time‐drawdown or time‐recovery graphs and describe drawdown or recovery conditions after a step function‐type change in discharge. A catalog of time‐voltage graphs provides data for construction of a series of water‐level change maps. Close agreement of water‐level declines determined with an analog computer and analytical methods for 3 selected idealized aquifer situations is noted with satisfaction.An electric analog model for the East St. Louis area was assembled. The sand and gravel aquifer in the East St. Louis area has an average thickness of 120 feet, an average width of 7 miles and an average length of 30 miles. The analog model for the aquifer consists of a regular array of 2800 resistors and 1350 capacitors. The scale of the model is 1 inch equals 2000 feet. Values of resistors range in magnitude from 2.2 megohms to 33,000 ohms; capacitors are 2500 micromicrofarads. The effects of the Mississippi River were simulated by terminating the portion of the electrical network along the river in an open circuit. Resistors large in magnitude were connected to terminals along the edge of the aquifer and to ground to simulate small amounts of sub‐surface flow through bluffs. The accuracy and reliability of the electric analog computer was established by comparing past records of water‐level declines and values of water‐level declines determined with the analog computer. The electric analog computer was used to evaluate the practical sustained yields of existing pumping centers, to predict the effects of a selected scheme of development and to deter‐mine the potential yield of the aquifer under assumed pump‐ing conditions.An electric analog model for the Champaign‐Urbana area was assembled. The sand and gravel aquifers in the Champaign‐Urbana area are contained in the Mahomet buried bedrock valley which extends across the central part of Illinois from the Indiana border to the Illinois River Valley. The Mahomet buried bedrock valley averages about 12 miles wide in the Champaign‐Urbana area and is largely filled with glacial drift ranging in thickness from 50 to 440 feet. Sand and gravel are encountered within the glac‐ial drift at depths between 60 and 120 feet (upper aquifer), 140 and 170 feet (middle aquifer) and below a depth of 200 feet (lower aquifer). The upper aquifer is thin and discontinuous; the middle aquifer has an average thickness of 43 feet; and the lower aquifer often exceeds 100 feet thick. Till averaging 120 feet thick (upper confining bed) overlies the middle aquifer; about 30 feet of till (lower confining bed) separates the middle and lower aquifers. The analog model for the complex aquifer system consists of a regular array of 7500 resistors and capacitors. The scale of the model is 1 inch equals 1 mile. Values of resistors range from 1 to 68,000 ohms; values of capacitors range from 10e6 to lo‐' farads. The analog model consists of 2 horizontal arrays of resis‐tors and capacitors (lower and middle aquifers) and 1 hori‐zontal ground wire array (water table) interconnected by two vertical arrays of resistors (lower and upper confining beds). The accuracy and reliability of the electric analog computer are being assessed. The computer will be used to predict the effects of future ground‐water development and the practical sustained yields of existing pumping centers in the Champaign‐Urbana area.

Comment on Weaver's “Technological Analysis of Lower Mississippi Ceramic Materials”

AbstractWeaver draws conclusions that need to be supported by more experimentation before they can be taken seriously by archaeologists. Thin-section analysis of ceramics from the St. Louis area has yielded certain facts that are briefly presented in order to show that grog-tempering is common in the Mississippi valley. Crushed-sherd tempering is a cultural reality and does not represent inclusions in potter's clay as Weaver suggests.

Strontium-90 Absorption by Deciduous Teeth

BS>Results of analyses of 20,439 teeth collected from children in the St. Louis area during 1959 and 1960 indiiate that analysis of deciduous teeth provides accurate information conerning Sr/sup 90/ deposition in bone. Teeth and bones developing in the same biologic environment were found to accumulate Sr/sup 90/ and Ca in the same ratio. It was shown that collection of teeth can be accomplished on a large scale. SOME CORRELATIONS OF CLIMATIC AND CULTURAL CHANGE IN EASTERN NORTH AMERICAN PREHISTORY

There is thus far relatively little direct evidence for climatic change from archaeological sites in the eastern United States. Archaeologists have considered for many years that the dividing line between eastern and western is the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains. This whole area then, has become a convenient unit of prehistoric studies because of the obvious connections and similarities at all known time periods and all of the cultural levels. Since A. D. Krieger, in his paper in this volume, emphasizes the initial occupation in North America, my attention will be primarily devoted to the last 4000 to 5000 years. Before one can interpret cultural changes as resulting from climatic variation it is highly desirable to have one’s prehistoric house in reasonable order. Sound chronological and stratigraphic sequences need to be developed over a wide area, and cultural complexes need to be carefully defined in local areas and in their correct and reasonably precise temporal position in order to observe the effects of climatic change on cultural behavior. Not only is a sound and laboriously obtained archaeological framework necessary, but there needs to be a sound corpus of data regarding floral and faunal changes, of soil zones, and of other climatic indicators in general ecological areas or zones. The pollen studies of the past 30 years have been a great help, and radiocarbon dating is providing an increasingly accurate chronological scale. Three years ago, while working on a paper on the prehistory of the Winnebago tribe of Wisconsin (Griffin, 19606), I developed the thesis that the observed cultural decline in the Upper Mississippi Valley of the Winnebago and their ancestors could be explained, at least to some degree, as the result of a climatic deterioration that corresponded to that accurately documented in Northern Europe and Greenland from about A.D. 1200 to 1700. Beginning a few hundred years before A.D. 1000 there developed in the East St. Louis area an agricultural, sedentary culture type that is a regioiial expression of an increasing emphasis on agriculture known in much of the eastern area as the Mississippi culture (Griffin, 1952). The Old Village complex of Mississippi culture in the St. Louis area exerted a strong influence to the north and northwest, up the Illinois, Mississippi, and the Missouri valleys. I t is certain that there was a strong movement of people into southern and western Wisconsin by about A.D. 700 to 800 (M-1037) and into eastern Minnesota, taking with them their customary cultural characteristics and their predominantly agricultural economy. Somewhat similar but apparently less strong influences moved into northwest Iowa and ioutheastern South Dakota. Studies of the Epidemiology of Influenza as Demonstrated by Serum Pools

In a previous publication1we reported the results of a study of individual cases of influenza infection in the St. Louis area extending from 1943 to the period just prior to the onset of the Asian Influenza epidemic in 1957. Information was presented concerning the prevalence of the disease during each year and the antigenic characteristics of the strains of virus responsible for the outbreaks that were observed. In many virus infections, such as poliomyelitis, it is known that for each case with clinical manifestations of disease there are many inapparent infections. The occurrence of inapparent infections in the case of influenza is obvious if it can be shown that an increase in antibodies against the prevalent strain of influenza virus occurs in the general population simultaneously with the recognition of clinical cases. Interindustry Relations of a Metropolitan Area

A GREAT deal of interest in metropolitan area analysis centers around the economic impact of autonomous forces upon any of the area's sectors and upon its totality. Researchers have often felt that even approximate knowledge of the structural relationship of the local economy would greatly facilitate their work. An interindustry flow table has been prepared for the St. Louis area, one of the ten largest metropolitan areas in the United States. From such a table it is but a short step to technical coefficients and the inverse matrix. Furthermore, from these tables income and employment multipliers can be estimated. Both are powerful tools in assessing the impact of final demand changes upon the economic activity of a metropolitan area. Much serious criticism has been leveled in the past against area technical coefficients which are deduced from national ones pertaining to an outdated period. This study undertakes to estimate 1955 coefficients with the help of data obtained directly from a sample of private and public bodies which together constitute the St. Louis metropolitan area economy. Based upon this information some activity and impact projections are attempted.

Problems encountered in the utilization of ground‐water reservoirs

Ground‐water reservoirs are compared to surface‐water reservoirs and the similarities and differences are pinpointed. For example, the boundaries and storage capacity of a water‐bearing formation are not readily determinable. By comparison, an aerial survey of a potential reservoir site, from which a contour map may be prepared, is generally sufficient to determine the boundaries and storage capacity of any desired impoundment. Further, ground‐water reservoirs are full to start with, whereas the area of an impoundment is usually devoid of water, except for a small amount contained in the river channel. Such differences, and others discussed in the body of the paper, give rise to social and engineering problems which are not duplicated elsewhere in the field of water‐resource development. It may not be an exaggeration to state that, at our present level of technique and knowledge, the scientific and engineering problems are less vexing than the problems which must be solved by negotiation and persuasion. Examples of problems encountered in the utilization of ground‐water reservoirs are cited. As case histories, problems of industrial ground‐water supply in the East St. Louis area, and of municipal ground‐water supply in the Canton, Ohio, area are discussed.

Mass tuberculin patch testing of school children; preliminary report of a community plan.

After a presentation by Dr. J. Arthur Myers on tuberculin testing in Minnesota schools to the St. Louis Academy of General Practice in September, 1951, academy members began to give serious consideration to the value of large-scale tuberculin patch testing by general practitioners in the St. Louis area. The original committee, though sincere in its aims, remained rather inactive other than urging academy members to patch test individual patients in their private practice. As early as January, 1952, letters were sent to all academy members urging the adoption of patch testing as a routine office procedure. The St. Louis Tuberculosis and Health Society, with the cooperation of the Retail Druggist's Association, furnished literature, patch tests, and report cards free of charge to all participating physicians. In spite of this cooperation the program of large-scale tuberculin patch testing was slow moving and could hardly be termed successful. Early in 1953 a

Some Fluted Projectile Points from Illinois

Fluted points, like many other artifacts, seem to be more common than previously thought. Once attention is called to a given item representative specimens are 'found in existing collections only waiting to be recognized. Smail (1951) has presented a discussion of many points of this type from the St. Louis area in Illinois.Recently several interesting specimens have been brought to the Illinois State Museum and are here illustrated, due to their unusual combination of attributes and location. The first of these (Fig. 57) was found in Fulton County in 1924 by the late Frank Aidrich of Bloomington, Illinois. It is lanceolate in shape, WA inches long, 114 inches wide about % of the length from the base, and lenticular in cross section. Its very delicate chipping produced parallel long flake scars running from each edge to the center. The base is ground on each side and across the bottom.

The New Art Collection at Washington University

The history of the Washington University Art Collection goes back to the 1880's when the university still occupied its original site in down-town St. Louis. At that time several rooms on the campus were set aside for the exhibition of works of art donated by various public-spirited citizens. These rooms, known as the St. Louis Museum, constituted the only public art collection in the St. Louis area until the time of the World's Fair. The university thus continued, for a period of about twenty-five years, to be the only local institution equipped to receive gifts or bequests from private collectors who wished to make their treasures available to the general public. Since this was the era when private collecting was at its height, in St. Louis as elsewhere, these donations soon grew into a very sizeable body of material, but unfortunately the discrimination of the donors often left a good deal to be desired. This represents the first isolation of this virus from any vertebrate host outside the endemic St. Louis area, and the second isolation of this virus in California.It is considered probable that the patient acquired his infection in Kern County, where Hammon and Reeves have shown the existence of naturally infected mosquitoes.The pathogenic properties of the virus are described and discussed.

ST. LOUIS ENCEPHALITIS

In the summer of 1933 an epidemic of acute encephalitis occurred in the St. Louis (Missouri) area. From August to November of that year there were 1,097 cases. A filtrable virus isolated from brain tissue of fatal cases was studied1extensively and was identified as the etiologic agent. In the summer of 1937 a second outbreak of acute encephalitis occurred in the St. Louis area. There were 750 cases, and a virus isolated from human brain tissue taken at autopsy was found to be immunologically identical with the infectious agent isolated in 1933. The occurrence of sporadic cases of this disease since 1937 indicates the existence of an endemic focus, a fact of considerable importance from an epidemiologic point of view.
