A multicolor aptasensor based on target-induced anti-etching gold nanorod for visible detection of aflatoxin B1

Foods contaminated with aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) pose a serious threat to humans, so rapid and sensitive detection of AFB1 plays an important role in public health. In this work, we developed a multicolor aptasensor based on target-mediated anti-etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs) for on-site visible detection of AFB1. The target was used as a competitor that competed with a cDNA probe labeled by horse radish peroxidase (cDNA-HRP) to bind with the aptamer coated in a microplate. The sensing mechanism was based on regulating the etching process of AuNRs upon the addition of different concentrations of AFB1. In the absence of AFB1, the AuNRs solution undergoes a distinct change from red to pink due to the etching effect of TMB2+ generated by a specific redox reaction catalyzed by the cDNA-HRP. However, in the presence of AFB1, the specific binding between AFB1 and aptamer made cDNA-HRP free out of the microplate, inhibiting the etching of AuNRs. Consequently, a redshift of longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and color alterations can be observed along with increasing the concentration of AFB1. The LSPR for visual estimation limits were 0.46 ng/mL. A good linear relationship between the wavelength shift and the concentration of AFB1 was achieved from violet to light green in the range of 1–1000 ng/mL. The established aptasensor displayed excellent detection performance, which was suitable for on-site analysis of AFB1 in actual food samples, and provided a new idea of immediate visualization detection for food hazardous factors.

Dynamic Orientation Control of Gold Nanorods in Polymer Brushes by Their Thickness Changes for Plasmon Switching

AbstractGold nanorods (AuNRs) have unique optical properties such as transverse and longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (T‐ and L‐LSPR). As the L‐LSPR absorption depends on the angle of the AuNRs to incident light and polarization, orientational control of AuNRs is a crucial issue. In spite of various techniques to control AuNR orientation, dynamic orientation tuning on a solid substrate remains challenging. Herein, dynamic changes are demonstrated in AuNR orientation in the anionic polymer (DNA) brushes via control of their thickness by salt concentration. AuNRs vertically align toward the substrates when their thickness exceeds the AuNR length. Once their thickness becomes shorter than the AuNR length, the attached AuNRs begin to tilt. The tilt reaches a maximum level close to horizontal when the thickness decreases to half that of the AuNR length. The dynamic control between the vertical (uniform) and tilted (random) orientation of the AuNRs showed not only absorption intensity changes in L‐LSPR but also the switching of side‐by‐side plasmon coupling. The polymer brush‐based system affords a novel platform for the stimuli‐responsive control of AuNR orientation on the substrates via changes in the thickness of polymer brushes for actively tunable plasmonic substrates.

Nanomechanical Photothermal Near Infrared Spectromicroscopy of Individual Nanorods.

Understanding light-matter interaction at the nanoscale requires probing the optical properties of matter at the individual nanoabsorber level. To this end, we developed a nanomechanical photothermal sensing platform that can be used as a full spectromicroscopy tool for single molecule and single particle analysis. As a demonstration, the absorption cross-section of individual gold nanorods is resolved from a spectroscopic and polarization standpoint. By exploiting the capabilities of nanomechanical photothermal spectromicroscopy, the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance in the NIR range is unraveled and quantitatively characterized. The polarization features of the transversal surface plasmon resonance in the VIS range are also analyzed. The measurements are compared with the finite element method, elucidating the role played by electron surface and bulk scattering in these plasmonic nanostructures, as well as the interaction between the nanoabsorber and the nanoresonator, ultimately resulting in absorption strength modulation. Finally, a comprehensive comparison is conducted, evaluating the signal-to-noise ratio of nanomechanical photothermal spectroscopy against other cutting-edge single molecule and particle spectroscopy techniques. This analysis highlights the remarkable potential of nanomechanical photothermal spectroscopy due to its exceptional sensitivity.

Combined Facile Synthesis, Purification, and Surface Functionalization Approach Yields Monodispersed Gold Nanorods for Drug Delivery Applications.

Synthesizing gold nanorods (AuNRs) by seed-mediated growth method results in the presence of undesired size and shape particles by-products occupying 10-90% of the population. In this study, AuNRs are synthesized by the seed-mediated growth method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant. AuNRs with redshifted longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) peak, localized in the biological "transparency window" (650-1350nm), are synthesized after optimizing seed solution, silver nitrate solution, and hydrochloric acid solution volumes, based on the published protocols. A two-step purification method, dialysis followed by centrifugation, is applied to remove excess CTAB and collect LLSPR-redshifted AuNRs with high rod purity (>90%). CTAB is subsequently exchanged with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to improve AuNRs biocompatibility. PEGylated AuNRs are confirmed innocuous to both SN4741 cells and B16F10 cells by the modified MTT assay and the modified lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay up to 1nm and 24h incubation. In this study, a combined facile synthesis, purification, and surface functionalization approach is proposed to obtain water-dispersible monodispersed AuNRs for drug delivery applications.

Growth time dependency on the formation of gold nanobipyramids for efficient detection towards chlorpyrifos-based LSPR sensor

The structure of gold nanobipyramids (GNBPs) is very promising for specific Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) properties, and thus potentially to be used in various applications, especially in sensing. This work reported growth time dependency on the formation of GNBPs for application in LSPR sensors for chlorpyrifos detection. The study on the growth time found that GNBPs formation at the initial stage is dominated by elongation direction and its optimum growth time is 2 h. The optimum GNBPs with 106.32 ± 2.50 in length, 42.17 ± 0.82 in width and an aspect ratio of 2.55 ± 0.08 were implemented as a sensing material for direct and rapid localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensors to detect chlorpyrifos. The mechanism is based on the change in spectrum intensity and wavelength shift between GNBPs when tested in deionized water and chlorpyrifos solution. The change arises from molecular interaction between the targeted analyte and the sensing material and effectively changes the dielectric features of the medium. The presence of chlorpyrifos in the 1 – 100 mg/mL concentration range has been successfully detected. The proposed sensor offers better sensitivity as high as 1.22 times for transverse LSPR mode and 2.04 for longitudinal LSPR mode than the LSPR sensor based on gold nanosphericals. Moreover, the sensor stability and repeatability response showed a reliable performance for determining chlorpyrifos. Furthermore, this sensor also shows high selectivity towards chlorpyrifos compared to other organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides such as malathion, chlorothalonil, and triclopyr-butotyl.

Smartphone-assisted point-of-care testing of nucleic acids based on hybridization chain reaction, magnetic beads, and gold nanorods etching

Colorimetric biosensors are simple but effective tools that are gaining popularity due to their ability to provide low-cost, rapid, and accurate detection for viruses like the Novel coronavirus, Influenza A, and Dengue virus, especially in point-of-care testing (POCT) and visual detection. In this study, a smartphone-assisted nucleic acid POCT was built using hybridization chain reaction (HCR), magnetic beads (MBs), and oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB2+)-mediated etching of gold nanorods (GNRs). The application of HCR without enzyme isothermal characteristics and MBs with easy separation, can quickly amplify nucleic acid signal and remove other reaction components. The blue shift of longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) based on GNRs showed significant differences in etching color for different concentrations of target nucleic acid, which convert the signal into a visually semi-quantitative colorimetric result, achieving quantitative analysis with the color recognition software built into smartphones. This strategy, which only takes 40 min to detect and is two-thirds less time than the PCR, was successfully applied for the detection of the Dengue target sequence with a detection limit of 1.25 nM and exhibited excellent specificity for distinguishing single-base mutations, indicating broad application prospects in clinical laboratory diagnosis and enriching the research of nucleic acid POCT.

Efficient and tunable liquid crystal random laser based on plasmonic-enhanced FRET

Random lasers (RLs), which possess peculiar advantages (e.g., emission and coherence tunable) over traditional lasers with optical resonators, have witnessed rapid development in the past decades. However, it is still a challenge to tune the lasing peak of an RL over a wide range. Here, a temperature-dependent Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) RL is demonstrated in pyrromethene 597 (PM597, “donor”) and Nile blue (NB, “acceptor”) doped chiral liquid crystals. By changing the temperature that drives the liquid crystal bandgap shift, our RL device exhibits a lasing output change from 560 nm (yellow) to 700 nm (red). While the intrinsic FRET efficiency between PM597 and NB is relatively low, the red lasing is weak. By introducing gold nanorods (GNRs) into these RL devices and utilizing GNRs’ localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, the efficiency of FRET transfer is increased by 68.9%, thereby reducing the threshold of the RL devices. By tuning the longitudinal LSPR to match the emission wavelength of NB, the best 200-fold lasing intensity enhancement is recorded. Our findings open a pathway toward realizing LSPR-enhanced FRET tunable RLs and broaden the range of their possible exploration in photonics research and technologies.

A smartphone-based colorimetric assay using Au@Ag core–shell nanoparticles as the nanoprobes for visual tracing of fluvoxamine in biofluids as a common suicide drug

In the present study, bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of gold (AuNPs) as the core and silver (AgNPs) as the shell have been synthesized and applied as the nanoprobe for detection of fluvoxamine (FXM) as the anti-depression drug. The physicochemical properties of the prepared citrate-capped Au@Ag core–shell NPs have been characterized by UV–Vis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. The design of the smartphone-based colorimetric FXM sensor relies on the fast hydrolysis of FXM under alkaline conditions by producing of 2-(Aminooxy)ethanamine without any significant peak at 400–700 nm. The interaction of the resulted molecule with the nanoprobe induced a red shift in the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak of the nanoprobe, which was accompanied by sharp and vivid color variations in the solution. A linear relationship between the absorption signal increasing by FXM concentration increasing from 1 µM to 10 µM presented a simple, low cost and minimally instrumented format for FXM quantification with a limit of detection (LOD) of 100 nM. The collected visual data with the elegant colorimetric response of the nanoprobe in the presence of FXM from Indian red to light red violet and bluish-purple color offered simple detection of FXM with the naked eye. The satisfactory results of the proposed cost-effective sensor in the rapid assay of FXM in human serum, urine, saliva and pharmaceutical samples guarantee the potential of the nanoprobe for on-site and visual determination of FXM in actual samples. The proposed sensor as the first non-invasive FXM sensor for saliva sample analysis may hold great promise to provide the technical support for the rapid and valid detection of FXM for forensic medicine and clinical organizations.

Strong coupling between longitudinal and U-shaped localized surface plasmon modes in rectangular grating-shaped gold nanostructures

Strong couplings between localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes and single quantum emitters have been intensively investigated recently, and meanwhile the coupling between different LSPR modes inside individual metallic nanoparticle is still rarely researched. Herein, the strong coupling is investigated for different LSPR modes inside individual rectangular-grating-shaped gold nanostructure composed of one main-cuboid and two side-attached subcuboids. Original uncoupled LSPR modes are revealed to be longitudinal and U-shaped LSPRs. For the nanostructure with increased main-cuboid length, the dispersion curves of simulated dual-original LSPR scattering wavelengths and dual-coupled LSPR scattering wavelengths show typical strong coupling patterns featuring anti-crossing and large Rabi splitting of 598.1 meV. The strong coupling is considered to be caused by the overlap of longitudinal and U-shaped LSPR oscillation modes in the gold nanostructure. The extracted coupling strength is found in order of 1013 Hz and it increases with the LSPR overlap length. The spatial mode and time evolution of the coupled LSPR modes are also numerically investigated. The simulated results are well comprehended with the classical strong coupling model of oscillators, further confirming the coupling between the longitudinal and the U-shaped LSPRs. The experimental dark-field scattering spectrum shows the existence of U-shaped LSPR mode in the gold nanostructure.

Engineering near-infrared laser-activated gold nanorod vesicles with upper critical solution temperature for photothermal therapy and chemotherapy

Multimodal synergistic therapy based on nanomedicine drug delivery systems can achieve accurate cancer treatment. The anisotropy of gold nanorods (AuNRs) allows the adjustment of the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance absorption to the near-infrared band, which shows potential application in the field of photothermal therapy of cancer. Here, we report a new type of thermal-sensitive gold nanorod drug-loaded vesicles (UGRV-DOX) via the self-assembly of AuNRs modified with the amphiphilic polymer (PEG45-b-PS150) and upper critical solution temperature (UCST) polymer (P(AAm-co-AN)). The hollow structure of the vesicle can increase the drug loading capacity, and the polymers on its surface are intertwined to reduce drug leakage. As-prepared UGRV-DOX vesicles exhibits excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and can achieve light-controlled drug release. In vivo anti-tumor experiments showed that UGRV-DOX could ablate HepG2 transplanted tumors significantly under 808 nm laser irradiation, and the inhibition rate was as high as 99.3 %. These tumor-specific nanovesicles prefigure great potentials for high-precision cancer treatment.

An Overview on Gold Nanorods as Versatile Nanoparticles in Cancer Therapy.

Gold nanorods (GNRs/AuNRs) are a group of gold nanoparticles which their simple surface chemistry allows for various surface modifications, providing the possibility of using them in the fabrication of biocompatible and functional nano-agents for cancer therapy. AuNRs, moreover, exhibit a maximum absorption of longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the near-infrared (NIR) region which overlaps with NIR bio-tissue 'window' suggesting that they are proper tools for thermal ablation of cancer cells. AuNRs can be used for induction of mono or combination therapies by administering various therapeutic approaches such as photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), chemotherapy (CT), radiotherapy (RT), and gene therapy (GT). In this review, anticancer therapeutic capacities of AuNRs along with different surface modifications are summarized comprehensively. The roles of AuNRs in fabrication of various nano-constructs are also discussed.

Charge transfer effect: a new assignment of the abnormal optical absorption band of gold nanoparticles

As a significant accompanying phenomenon of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), the addition of foreign molecules to colloidal gold or silver nanoparticles results in a new abnormal optical absorption (AOA) band, which usually appears in the long-wavelength region. The assignment of this AOA band has long been debated as an important issue that is desired to be addressed in the SERS field, which is crucial for a clear understanding of the SERS enhancement mechanism and beneficial to surface plasmonics. In this study, both the calculated and measured optical absorptions of gold nanoparticle monomers and dimers as well as their interactions with adsorbed molecules, showed that the AOA band in the long-wavelength region which was assigned to the characteristic longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of gold nanoparticle chain aggregates in conventional SERS electromagnetic theory, should be attributed to the charge-transfer resonance absorption from gold nanoparticles to adsorbed molecules. This was further confirmed by the corresponding SERS effects. As the excitation wavelength at 785 nm was resonant with the broad AOA band centered at 750 nm, the SERS peaks of the adsorbed pyridine molecules could be dramatically enhanced due to the charge-transfer resonance effect. In contrast, under an excitation wavelength of 532 nm, the SERS peaks appeared very weak, although the excitation wavelength was resonant with the LSPR absorption band of the individual gold nanoparticles.

Shape dependency of gold nanorods through TMB2+-mediated etching for the visual detection of NT-proBNP.

Heart failure (HF) is a major public health problem triggered by heart circulation disorders. Early detection and diagnosis are conducive to the prevention and treatment of HF. Hence, it is necessary to establish a simple and sensitive method to monitor the diagnostic biomarkers of HF. The N-terminal B-type natriuretic peptide precursor (NT-proBNP) is acknowledged as a sensitive biomarker. In this study, a visual detection method for NT-proBNP was developed based on the oxidized 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB2+)-mediated etching of gold nanorods (AuNRs) and double-antibody-sandwich ELISA. The etching color for different amounts of NT-proBNP was obvious and significant differences could be ascertained based on the blue-shift of the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LLSPR) of the AuNRs. The results could be observed by the naked eye. The constructed system showed a concentration range from 6 to 100 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 6 ng mL-1. This method exhibited negligible cross-reactivity toward other proteins, and the recoveries of the samples ranged from 79.99% to 88.99%. These results demonstrated that the established method is suitable for the simple and convenient detection of NT-proBNP.

Silver-Coated Gold Nanorods as Optical Probes for the Sensitive Detection of Ascorbic Acid in Tablets

Ascorbic acid (AA) has been widely used to improve human health since it was first found, such as resisting scurvy, enhancing immunity, and preventing arteriosclerosis. Moreover, it plays a very important role in the anti-oxidation process in the human body. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop sensitive and accurate detection methods. In this work, silver-coated gold nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) acted as the optical probe, which could be etched with hydroxyl radicals (·OH) from the Fenton reaction between H2O2 and Fe2+, leading to the blue shift of longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance absorption. However, as a free radical scavenger, AA was able to inhibit the Fenton reaction, resulting in a red shift of plasmon resonance absorption. Based on the change in longitudinal plasma resonance absorption of silver-coated gold nanorods, a linear relationship between the maximum longitudinal absorption wavelength and the concentration of AA was established in the range of 2.5–17.5 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.48 μM and a limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 1.61 μM, which was feasible to detect AA in tablets.

Multicolor colorimetric assay for copper ion detection based on the etching of gold nanorods.

An effective, selective, and multicolor colorimetric assay for Cu2+ detection based on the regulation of peroxidase-like nanozyme-mediated etching of gold nanorods (Au NRs) isproposed. Cu2+-creatinine complex is selected as the nanozyme that exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity even in the case of low concentration of Cu2+, which can catalyze 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce oxidized TMB (TMB+) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, and TMB+ is oxidized to generate TMB2+ after adding H+, and the TMB2+ can etch Au NRs. The determination of Cu2+ is achieved based on the blue shift of the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance peak of Au NRs. Under the optimal conditions, the developed colorimetric assay exhibits high sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ (limit of detection is 0.034μM) with a wide linear range of 0.05-4.0μM (R2 = 0.987). Thesolution shows a rainbow-like color in response to the increase of Cu2+ concentration, which can realize the semi-quantitative detection of Cu2+ by naked eyes. In addition, the developed method exhibits excellent selectivity for Cu2+-detection. Theestablished method was used for the determination of Cu2+ in lake water, soil, and normal human serum with satisfactory recovery of spiked samples.

Mini AuAg Wavy Nanorods Displaying Plasmon‐Induced Photothermal and Photocatalytic Properties

Alloyed AuAg wavy nanorods (wNRs) of ≈24.0 nm length and 3.5 nm width are formed by the mild decomposition of the organometallic complex [Au2Ag2(C6F5)4(OEt2)2]n in tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the presence of oleic acid. Ligand exchange with l‐glutathione (GSH) or poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether thiol (PEG‐SH) leads to water‐soluble nanostructures. These AuAg wNRs display tunable size‐dependent longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (l‐LSPR) broad absorptions beyond 750 nm in the near‐infrared (NIR) I and II regions. These intense plasmonic absorptions lead to interesting photothermal, catalytic, and photocatalytic properties, including the catalytic reduction of 4‐nitrophenol, the photocatalytic reduction of 4‐nitrostyrene, or the photocatalytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane for H2 release.

T-matrix simulations of the optical response of gold nanorods: Impact of dielectric function of nanorods on the simulated optical properties and their sensitivity to the dielectric environment

The T-matrix approach is used to elucidate the influence of the dielectric function of gold nanorods on their optical response. On the basis of extensive and systematic numerical simulations, we follow the spectral variations of extinction efficiency and field enhancement as a function of the nanorod’s dielectric properties, medium dielectric constant, and aspect ratio. Simulations with six available tabulated gold dielectric functions show different locations of the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). A shift of up to 50 nm is found and compared with experimental data available in the literature. With the increasing refractive index of the ambient medium, the peaks red shift to higher wavelengths, which can be understood in terms of the reduced plasmon energy due to the reduced restoring forces of the plasmon oscillations. A linear correlation exists between the relative shift of the resonance wavelength and the relative increment of the medium refractive index. The correlation coefficient represents the sensitivity of the resonance to the dielectric environment and is more dependent on the aspect ratio than the dielectric properties of nanorods. However, a non-linear correlation is observed between the relative changes in the resonance extinction peak and the relative refractive index increment of the medium, which is considerably affected by the dielectric properties of nanorods. Results reveal that the field enhancement is influenced primarily by the dielectric environment and the aspect ratio. Simulations with the size-corrected dielectric functions show a broadening of the LSPR with no significant shift, in addition to a reduced extinction efficiency and field enhancement.

Simulation of LSPR optical and electric field enhancement distribution based on gold nanobipyramids using a modified nanosphere

Gold nanobipyramids (Au NBPs) have attracted increasing attention due to their unique plasma properties. Au NBPs have been widely used in photocatalysis, photothermal therapy, and micro/nano-optical devices. The longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics of the Au NBPs modified by metal nanospheres of different sizes and materials are simulated by the finite difference time domain method. The effect of metal nanosphere modification on the formant redshift and the distribution of electric field intensity were verified. These results show that the resonance wavelength of Au NBPs shows a positive relationship with the increase in the radius r of the modified Au nanosphere, and the extreme value of the electric field is negatively correlated with R. The redshift of the Au NBPs is caused by the radius of the modified metal nanosphere and the type of materials, among which the radius of the nanosphere is the main factor. The redshift caused by the modification of gold nanospheres of the same size is similar for Au NBPs with different aspect ratios, indicating that the modification applies to Au NBPs of various sizes. This work is a reference value for the in-depth study of the LSPR properties of Au NBPs and can promote the progress of its related work.

In Situ Direct Monitoring of the Morphological Transformation of Single Au Nanostars Induced by Iodide through Dual-Laser Dark-Field Microscopy: Unexpected Mechanism and Sensing Applications.

Single nanoparticle imaging is a significant technique to help reveal the reaction mechanism and provides insight into the nanoparticle transformation. Here, we monitor the in situ morphological transformation of Au nanostars (GNSs) induced by iodide (I−) in real time using dark-field microscopy (DFM) with 638 nm red (R) and 534 nm green (G) laser coillumination. The two lasers are selected because the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance of GNSs is located at 638 nm and that for GNSs after transformation is at 534 nm. Interestingly, I− can interact with GNSs directly without the engagement of other reagents, and upon increasing I− concentrations, GNSs undergo color changes from red to orange, yellow, and green under DFM. Accordingly, green/red channel intensities (G/R ratios) are extracted by obtaining red and green channel intensities of single nanoparticles to weigh the morphological changes and quantify I−. A single nanoparticle sensor is constructed for I− detection with a detection limit of 6.9 nM. Finally, a novel mechanism is proposed to elucidate this shape transformation. I− absorbed onto the surface of GNSs binds with Au atoms to form AuI−, lowering the energy of its bond with other Au atoms, which facilitates the diffusion of this atom across the nanoparticle surface to low-energy sites at the concaves, thus deforming to spherical Au nanoparticles.

Thermally stable gold nanorod dispersed silicone composite with plasmonic resonance in the optical communication window

Gold nanorods (AuNRs) possess a high optical nonlinear coefficient, ultrafast optical response speed and widely tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength covering the visible and near infrared region. Therefore, they are extensively investigated for many optical applications. However, the poor thermal stability of the AuNRs seriously restricts their practical performance. In addition, for many applications, such as optical communication or laser modulation, AuNRs have to be combined with transparent solids, for example polymers, glass or crystals to make devices. Here, we report on the preparation of 0.23 mg AuNR dispersed methyl silicone resin (MSR) with longitudinal LSPR (L-LSPR) wavelength (1450 nm) in the optical communication window. We found that AuNR-silicone composites possess high thermal stability. After calcination in ambient environment at a temperature of 250 °C for 10 h, the L-LSPR peak of the sample can remain longer than 1380 nm, implying that the NR shape of the Au particles was well maintained. Using the open-aperture Z-scan technique, the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the composites was measured as −11.71 cm GW−1, higher than many nonlinear materials. Thus, the thermally stable AuNR@SiO2-MSR composite with high nonlinearity is promising for practical applications in the optical communication window.
