Luminescence dating of glacially sourced deposits from northern Switzerland: Comparing multigrain aliquots and single grains of quartz and feldspar

A complex picture of the Pleistocene glaciation history of northern Switzerland has been identified over the last three decades. To gain further insights into the long-term landscape evolution, numerical dating is required. In the absence of alternative dating techniques, luminescence dating is the key method for establishing chronological constraints of past glaciations. However, this is presented with complex challenges, especially in regard to the resetting of the luminescence signal prior to deposition, the components contributing to the signal as well as the signal intensity and stability. In this study, the luminescence properties of glacially sourced deposits from northern Switzerland are assessed using single aliquot (SA) and single grain (SG) measurements of feldspar (F) and quartz (Q). While no obvious connection between bleaching and distal or proximal deposition in relation to the proposed ice margin is observed, most samples seem to reveal a partially bleached signature in F SG De measurements. This appears to be masked in the respective F SA measurements even though only few grains emit luminescence signals. In addition, comparisons between fading corrected infrared stimulated luminescence (IR) and post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (pIR) De values appear to be unreliable indicators of bleaching, even though these signals bleach at different rates. Hence, it is recommended to conduct both IR and pIR investigations in combination with Q measurements on a SG level. The dating potential of the investigated deposits remains rather limited, yet, in the sedimentologic context the presented results reveal that several glacial advances occurred prior to the Last Interglacial in the study area.

Evolution of submarine canyons and hanging-wall fans: insights from geomorphic experiments and morphodynamic models

Abstract. Tectonics play a significant role in shaping the morphology of submarine canyons, which form essential links in source-to-sink (S2S) systems. It is difficult, however, to investigate the resulting morphodynamics over the long term. For this purpose, we propose a novel experimental approach that can generate submarine canyons and hanging-wall fans on continuously evolving active faults. We utilize morphometric analysis and morphodynamic models to understand the response of these systems to fault slip rate (Vr) and inflow discharge (Q). Our research reveals several key findings. Firstly, the fault slip rate controls the merging speed of submarine canyons and hanging-wall fans, which in turn affects their quantity and spacing. Additionally, the long profile shapes of submarine canyons and hanging-wall fans can be decoupled into a gravity-dominated breaching process and an underflow-dominated diffusion process, which can be described using a constant-slope relationship and a morphodynamic diffusion model, respectively. Furthermore, both experimental and simulated submarine canyon–hanging-wall fan long profiles exhibit strong self-similarity, indicating that the long profiles are scale independent. The Hack's scaling relationship established through morphometric analyses serves as an important link between different scales in S2S systems, bridging laboratory-scale data to field-scale data and submarine-to-terrestrial relationships. Lastly, for deep-water sedimentary systems, we propose an empirical formula to estimate fan volume using canyon length, and the data from 26 worldwide S2S systems utilized for comparison show a strong agreement. Our geomorphic experiments provide a novel perspective for better understanding of the influence of tectonics on deep-water sedimentary processes. The scaling relationships and empirical formulas we have established aim to assist in estimating volume information that is difficult to obtain during long-term landscape evolution processes.

Surface deformation of northeastern Taiwan revealed by geomorphic indices

In northeast Taiwan, many areas are affected by various tectonic forcings. Some areas appear to have a subsidence tendency, whereas others reflect uplift activities on the surface, due to tectonic northward compressive forcing growth and decline. Owing to the presence of widespread mountain areas, limited geodetic surveys in the field have made data scarce in the study area in the past decades. The distribution of the geomorphic indices, which were calculated along the river channels, were used to analyze the activities on a regional scale in this study. The long-term landscape evolution of drainage basins can record topographic changes through the river channels. By calculating the location and drop height of knickpoint in the river longitudinal profile, as well as the spatial distribution of the normalized steepness index ({K}_{sn}) value, it is possible to comprehensively discuss the perturbations that were caused by possible factors in river channels. Our results from the geomorphic indices synthetically suggest that the river channel of drainage basins is mainly influenced by the perturbations such as geological structures, tectonic activity, various lithologies, potential ruptures. In the study area, tectonic forcing act on a large area from north to south, which is reflected in the long-term incision of the river into the bedrock. Moreover, the potential ruptures on the surface may also induce displacement in the local area.

Recent Uplift Characteristics of the Southeast Tibetan Plateau, an Analysis Based on Fluvial Indices

The southeastern Tibetan Plateau (SETP) is well known for its large strike–slip faults with high slip rates and a high potential for seismic hazards. However, little is known about its thrust faults and associated seismic hazards, even though they can produce devastating earthquakes despite their relatively low slip rate. Here we investigated the thrust faults and the recent tectonic uplift pattern in the SETP on a regional scale by combining geomorphic analysis and geodetic data. We quantify the potential differential uplift in the SETP recorded in the long-term landscape evolution with geomorphic indices and compare them with differential uplift derived from decadal leveling data and millennial-scale fluvial terrace incision rates. The results show that the northwest of the SETP underwent higher uplift rates compared to its southeast areas, which is in agreement with the GPS-based leveling. Essentially, the geomorphic indices build two value ranges that are spatially clustered and separated by the Muli thrust fault system, a transverse fault system, which is orientated oblique/perpendicular to the large strike–slip fault. The geomorphic indices indicating rapid uplift rates spatially correspond with high rates derived from leveling data on the northwest side of the Muli thrust fault. The Muli thrust fault, therefore, acted as an important topographic and tectonic boundary absorbing partial southeast crustal movement. Hence, further detailed studies, such as seismological investigations, are suggested to be conducted on the Muli fault for seismic hazards evaluation.

Long-Term Visioning for Landscape-Based Spatial Planning—Experiences from Two Regional Cases in The Netherlands

Normative scenarios for long-term (e.g., 100 years) landscape development can be very inspiring to imagine outside the box landscape futures, without being obliged to define concrete policy objectives for the shorter term. However, it remains challenging to translate such long-term visions into clear transition pathways. We draw upon a landscape-based design approach to local spatial planning to foster a transition to a well-functioning landscape, resilient to various external pressures. Inspired by a national visioning exercise for the Netherlands in 2120, two local case studies at municipal level in the Netherlands are analysed, aiming to identify in what ways the setup of a regional landscape-based design study using future visions can optimise the spatial planning process. Therefore, this comparative case study analysed the cases on the landscape-based approach, the design process, and the future visions formulated. The comparison shows that fostering abiotic differences safeguards sustainable and resilient landscapes; moreover, co-creation relying on representative local actors appears fundamental for shared solutions, while a landscape-based approach guarantees transitions to adaptive and biodiverse landscapes. We conclude that a shared long-term future landscape vision is a crucial source of inspiration to solve today’s spatial planning problems. The constellation of the stakeholder group involved and the methodological setup of a visioning process are determinative for the way a long-term vision is suited to informing spatial planning for a sustainable future.

Timing of rapid cooling and erosional decay of two volcanic islands of the Canary Archipelago: implications from low-temperature thermochronology

The Canary Archipelago comprises seven volcanic islands formed by the activity of the Canary mantle anomaly that might have been caused by an ascending plume at the NW-African passive margin. The “Basal Complex (BC)”, which contains the islands pre-shield rock formations, is exposed in the northwest and central Fuerteventura and NW-La Gomera and preserves the archive of giant landslides that caused the removal of most of the shield-stage volcanic rocks. Tools, like low-temperature thermochronology (LTT) are sensitive to rapid cooling activities that accompany landslides. In addition, integrating LTT data with time–temperature (t–T) numerical modelling are a powerful tool for reconstructing the thermo-tectonic evolution as well as defining and quantifying long-term landscape evolution in a variety of geological settings. To unravel part of the long-term landscape evolution of Fuerteventura and La Gomera, zircon and apatite fission-track, and (U–Th)/He data combined with t–T numerical modelling were applied to 39 samples representing the main rock units of the BCs and younger magmatic rocks on both islands. In Fuerteventura, the Northwest and Central Basal Complexes reveal rapid cooling/exhumation of more than 200 °C at ~ 20 Ma. The quantification of the thickness of the rock column using the t–T cooling path would need the knowledge of the palaeo-heat flow. The published thickness of the moved rock column in Fuerteventura and La Gomera does not point to an extreme high heat flow. Therefore, the formation of a giant landslide leads to the removal of ~ 2.0 (± 0.5) km of the volcano rock column. Offshore, such a landslide has led to part of the Puerto Rosario large debris avalanche. The “Central Basal Complex” revealed two more rapid cooling/exhumation events at ~ 16 Ma and ~ 14 Ma that might also be related to landslides. The three landslides might be responsible for the formation of the nowadays Puerto Rosario Debris Avalanche Unit offshore. What might have caused the landslides in Fuerteventura. Age data published provide evidence for magmatic and tectonic activity that occur at the time of the formation of the giant landslides. In addition, the Miocene climate significant changes lead to changes in precipitation, and such changes might also provide a destabilisation of pyroclastic units. Therefore, the causes of the giant landslides might be related to more than only one process. The La Gomera BC has experienced two rapid cooling/exhumation events: the first at ~ 9 Ma, which might have caused ~ 2.0 (± 0.2) km of erosion forming the offshore Tazo avalanche, also known as the Tazo landslide. The second rapid cooling at ~ 8.0 Ma is located at the northwest of the Island and might have been caused by the Garajonay caldera collapse and followed by landslides. The landslides are assumed to have formed the Segments I, II, III, and VIII of the submarine debris avalanches offshore. Like Fuerteventura, both landslides might have been triggered by tectonic and magmatic activities as well as due to variation in precipitation caused by climate variation.

Quantification of post-glacier bedrock surface erosion in the European Alps using10Be and optically stimulated luminescence exposure dating

Abstract. The retreat of glaciers since the Last Glacial Maximum in the European Alps has left an imprint on topography through various erosional processes. However, few methods are currently capable of resolving these mechanisms on Late Glacial to Holocene timescales. Quantifying the relative contributions of mountain erosion, during these different climate cycles, is useful for understanding long-term landscape evolution and the links between global climate and erosion. Here, we combine three optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) exposure dating signals with 10Be surface exposure dating to constrain the post-glacier erosion rates of bedrock samples adjacent to the Gorner Glacier in the European Alps. The results reveal erosion rates of the order of 10−2 to 10−1 mm a−1, in general agreement with other studies in the region, as well as a strong negative correlation between erosion rate and elevation, suggesting that frost crack weathering is perhaps not the dominant form of post-glacier weathering. Finally, a global compilation of both subglacial and periglacial erosion rates shows that periglacial erosion rates could be greater than previously thought. Yet subglacial erosion remains higher, implying that it continues to have the stronger influence on shaping landscapes. Therefore, with a changing climate, periglacial erosion rates are likely to remain transient. These insights could lead to important implications for landscape evolution models.

Investigation of stochastic-threshold incision models across a climatic and morphological gradient

Abstract. Long-term landscape evolution is controlled by tectonic and climatic forcing acting through surface processes. Rivers are the main drivers of continental denudation because they set the base level of most hillslopes. The mechanisms of fluvial incision are thus a key focus in geomorphological research and require accurate representation and models. River incision is often modeled with a stream power model (SPM) based on the along-stream evolution of drainage area and channel elevation gradient but can also incorporate more complex processes such as threshold effects and statistical discharge distributions, which are fundamental features of river dynamics. Despite their importance in quantitative geomorphology, such model formulations have been confronted with field data only in a limited number of cases. Here we investigate the behavior of stochastic-threshold incision models across the southeastern margin of the French Massif Central, which is characterized by significant relief and the regular occurrence of high-discharge events. Our study is based on a new dataset combining measurements of discharge variability from gauging stations, denudation rates from 34 basins from 10Be cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN) concentration measurements in river sediments, morphometric analysis of river long profiles, and field observations. This new dataset is used for a systematic investigation of various formulations of the SPM and to discuss the importance of incision thresholds. Denudation rates across the SE margin of the Massif Central are in the 20–120 mm kyr−1 (equivalent to mm/ka in the figures) range, and they positively correlate with slope and precipitation. However, the relationship with the steepness index is complex and supports the importance of taking into account spatial variations in parameters (D50, discharge variability k, runoff) controlling the SPM. Overall, the range of denudation rate across the margin can mainly be explained using a simple version of the SPM accounting for spatially heterogeneous runoff. More complex formulations including stochastic discharge and incision thresholds yield poorer performances unless the spatial variations in bedload characteristics controlling incision thresholds are taken into account. Our results highlight the importance of the hypotheses used for such a threshold in SPM application to field studies and notably the impact of actual constraints on bedload size.

Quaternary sediment sources and loess transport pathways in the Black Sea - Caspian Sea region identified by detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology

Constraining the controls on the distribution of sediment at a continental scale is a critical step in understanding long-term landscape and climate evolution. In particular, understanding of the role of rivers in wider sediment routing and impacts on aeolian loess formation on a continental scale remains limited. Extensive Quaternary loess deposits are present on the East European Plain and in the Black Sea - Caspian Sea region and are associated with major rivers draining numerous surrounding cratonic and orogenic hinterland areas. Coupled with this, complex changes in local and global sea level have affected the extent and drainage of the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea, and Quaternary glaciations have impinged on the northern margin of the East European Plain. This suggests that sediment routing and loess formation may show complex patterns and controls. Here, we apply UPb dating of detrital zircons from fluvial, marine and aeolian (dominantly loess) sedimentary records on the East European Plain and in the Black Sea - Caspian Sea region. This shows a strong control of large rivers on the distribution of sediments at a continental scale in the region, through long-distance transport of several 1000 km, sourced from continental and mountain glacier areas prior to marine or atmospheric reworking and transportation. Strong spatial variability in zircon UPb data from loess deposits on the East European Plain reveals multiple diverse sources to the different individual loess sections, whereas no significant temporal variability in loess source is detected during the Late Pleistocene of the Lower Volga loess in South Russia. While the sediment supply from glacial areas via rivers plays an important role for the provenance of East European Plain loess deposits, our data indicate that the stark spatial diversity in loess provenance on the East European Plain is often driven by the input of multiple local sources. Similar to the loess, marine sediments from different basins of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea also show significant spatial variability. This variability is controlled by the bathymetry of the seas, leading to sedimentary intermixing by sea currents within, but not between different separated sea basins. A direct comparison of marine and aeolian sediments at the same depositional site suggests that although loess and marine sediments are both dominantly sourced from river sediments containing far travelled sedimentary material, local sources play a more important role in many loess deposits.

Hidden paleosols on a high-elevation Alpine plateau (NW Italy): Evidence for Lateglacial Nunatak?

Alpine soils can provide valuable paleo-environmental information, representing a powerful tool for paleoclimate reconstruction. However, since Pleistocene glaciations and erosion-related processes erased most of the pre-existing landforms and soils, reconstructing soil and landscape development in high-mountain areas can be a difficult task. In particular, a relevant lack of information exists on the transition between the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM ~21,000 yr BP) and the Holocene (~11,700 yr BP), with this climatic shift that plays a crucial role for environmental thresholds identification. The present study aims at reconstructing the history and origin of hidden paleosols inside periglacial blockstreams and blockfields on a high-elevation Alpine plateau (Stolenberg Plateau) above 3000 m a.s.l., in the Northwestern Italian Alps. The results indicate that these soils recorded the main warming climatic phases occurred from the end of the LGM until the Late Holocene ~4000 yr BP. Our reconstructions, together with the high carbon stocks of these paleosols, suggest that during warming phases the environmental conditions on the Plateau were suitable for plant life and pedogenesis, already since 22,000–21,000 yr BP. These paleosols reasonably evidence the existence of a Lateglacial Nunatak representing, to our knowledge, one of the first documented relict non-glacial surfaces in the high-elevated European Alps. Thus, the Stolenberg Plateau provides important information about past climate and surface processes since the end of LGM, suggesting new perspectives on the long-term landscape evolution of the high European Alps. • Mountain soils provide paleo-environmental information. • High-elevation Umbrisols recorded the main warming climatic phases since ~21 ka. • The Plateau probably hosted vegetation since the end of Last Glacial Maximum. • Soil organic matter likely originated from alpine flora similar to the present one. • The Stolenberg Plateau represents a Lateglacial Alpine Nunatak.

The (mis)conception of average Quaternary conditions

AbstractThe concept of Quaternary average conditions has gained popularity over the past few decades, especially with studies of long-term landscape evolution. In this paper, we critically assess this concept by analyzing the marine isotope record (LR04 δ18O stack) relative to the Quaternary. This shows that the frequency and amplitude of climate glacial-interglacial cycles are not constant throughout the Quaternary, with a clear change during the Middle Pleistocene Transition (MPT), and that many minor oscillations exist within each cycle. For this reason, the identification of pre- and post-MPT most-frequent and, cumulatively, longest-lasting (rather than average) conditions is recommended. The most-frequent pre-MPT δ18O value of 3.725 ± 0.025‰ last occurred during 11.31–11.47 ka, while the most-frequent post-MPT δ18O value of 4.475 ± 0.025‰ last occurred during 14.81–15.04 ka. However, many other δ18O values were almost as frequent throughout the Quaternary and we present geomorphological reasons as to why it is unlikely that the present-day landscape reflects Quaternary average or, indeed, most-frequent conditions. Collectively, our results indicate that extreme caution should be taken when attempting to infer long-term landscape evolution processes (including the buzzsaw hypothesis) based on average Quaternary conditions.

Effects of glaciation on karst hydrology and sedimentology during the Last Glacial Cycle: The case of Granito cave, Central Pyrenees (Spain)

In Alpine regions, speleothem development on karst systems largely occurs during warm interglacial or interstadial phases due to their limited growth during cold stages. Still, recent attention has been given to the role of clastic sediments in caves, less dependent on temperature conditions. Yet, only a small number of caves worldwide preserve both speleothems and detrital deposits. Here we present an outstanding record of fine-grain laminated sediments and carbonate speleothems from the Granito cave (South Central Pyrenees, Spain) associated with seasonal to annual hydroclimatic pulses through the Last Glacial Cycle (LGC). Analysis of cave clastic facies together with new absolute dates on glacial deposits along the valley has provided new insights into the karst-glacial interactions in relation with long-term landscape evolution, with support of geomorphological, sedimentological, mineralogical, palynological, geochemical and geochronological data (U/Th series, OSL and IRSL).The Granito cave was formed before 153.6±1.2 ky (Marine Isotopic Stage, MIS 6), as indicated by the oldest stalagmites dated in the cave, although speleothem formation occurred preferentially during MIS 5 and the Holocene interglacial stages. A 60 m thick clastic deposit was IRSL dated from 71.8±5.6 ky to after 26.5±2.5 ky corresponding with the maximum ice extent (MIE) during the LGC and subsequent glacial stabilization at 30.3±1.7 – 36.2±2.2 ky. The sediment infill was produced by water ponded in the cave coeval with the presence of glacial ice blocking the cave entrance. The cave clastic sequence includes channel, slackwater and backswamp facies, interpreted to result from pulses of sediment-laden water flow under vadose and phreatic flow regimes. The cave sediment’s mineralogical composition points to an exogenous source associated with glacial till sediments overlying the hillslope above the cave and along the Ara River valley. The palynological results obtained from the cave sediments show the dominance of an open landscape composed of steppe vegetation indicating cold glacial climatic conditions. The opening of the cave occurred before 14.9±1.5 ky, the stabilization age of the innermost Ara glacier moraine, giving rise to scouring and cut-and-fill sequences within the detrital infill. Speleothem growth during the Holocene indicates the return to warm climatic conditions with the development of a soil and vegetation cover above the cave. This study shows how a combined interpretation of clastic and speleothem lithofacies is critical for elucidating landscape evolution and surface-groundwater palaeohydrological changes in northern Iberia during the LGC.

Recent advances on geomorphology of the Gorce Mountains, the Outer Western Carpathians – state-of-the-art and future perspectives

The increase of geomorphological research during the last decades in the Gorce Mts. caused the need for state-of-art review papers. The Gorce Mountains were formed as an isolated massif with Mt Turbacz (1310 m a.s.l.) as the highest summit. River channels are remodeled by sudden and high-level floods with the critical impact of log jams. The main processes influencing hillslope relief were landsliding, run-off, and tree uprooting. The review suggests the following issues await for studies: a long-term landscape evolution, monitoring of morphogenetic processes, and origin of landslides with their contribution to denudation rates. Also, current biomorphodynamics (uprooting process) has not been sufficiently studied.

Earth’s Dynamic Past Revealed by Detrital Thermochronometry

A dvances in detrital noble gas thermochronometry by 40Ar/39Ar and (U–Th)/He dating are improving the resolution of sedimentary provenance reconstructions and are providing new insights into the evolution of Earth’s surface. Detrital thermochronometry has the ability to quantify tectonic unroofing or erosion, temporal and dynamic connections between sediment source and sink, sediment lag-times and transfer rates, the timing of deposition, and postdepositional burial heating. Hence, this technique has the unique ability to use the detrital record in sedimentary basins to reconstruct Earth’s dynamic long-term landscape evolution and how basins are coupled to their hinterlands.

Dimensional analysis of a landscape evolution model with incision threshold

Abstract. The ability of erosional processes to incise into a topographic surface can be limited by a threshold. Incision thresholds affect the topography of landscapes and their scaling properties and can introduce nonlinear relations between climate and erosion with notable implications for long-term landscape evolution. Despite their potential importance, incision thresholds are often omitted from the incision terms of landscape evolution models (LEMs) to simplify analyses. Here, we present theoretical and numerical results from a dimensional analysis of an LEM that includes terms for threshold-limited stream-power incision, linear diffusion, and uplift. The LEM is parameterized by four parameters (incision coefficient and incision threshold, diffusion coefficient, and uplift rate). The LEM's governing equation can be greatly simplified by recasting it in a dimensionless form that depends on only one dimensionless parameter, the incision-threshold number Nθ. This dimensionless parameter is defined in terms of the incision threshold, the incision coefficient, and the uplift rate, and it quantifies the reduction in the rate of incision due to the incision threshold relative to the uplift rate. Being the only parameter in the dimensionless governing equation, Nθ is the only parameter controlling the evolution of landscapes in this LEM. Thus, landscapes with the same Nθ will evolve geometrically similarly, provided that their boundary and initial conditions are normalized according to appropriate scaling relationships, as we demonstrate using a numerical experiment. In contrast, landscapes with different Nθ values will be influenced to different degrees by their incision thresholds. Using results from a second set of numerical simulations, each with a different incision-threshold number, we qualitatively illustrate how the value of Nθ influences the topography, and we show that relief scales with the quantity Nθ+1 (except where the incision threshold reduces the rate of incision to zero).

Large-scale geomorphological mapping of tors – Proposal of a key and landform interpretation

Isolated bedrock outcrops amidst regolith-covered slopes, often named as tors, have been the object of interest in many geomorphological studies, usually as a part of long-term landscape evolution inquiries. However, detailed presentation of tor morphology on maps in publications is very uncommon. In this paper we propose a new comprehensive method of detailed, large-scale geomorphic mapping of tors. It is tested on selected tor groups located in the Sudetes, in southwestern Poland. They are diversified in terms of lithology (granite, greenstone and sandstone bedrock) and morphological features (solitary tor, rock city, cluster of tors, rock cliffs etc.). The method consists of three stages: preparation of digital spatial data, field mapping and final legend and map design. The legend consists of 40 symbols which allows to show tor morphology in considerable detail, assisting thereby in the interpretation of controls behind tor formation and evolutionary pathways of different types of tors. Using detailed maps, one can extract information about major vertical joint sets and the patterns of tor decay, weathering of rock surfaces in subaerial conditions, structure of slope covers and internal morphological differentiation within large clusters of tors, the latter being a possible manifestation of certain stages in the development of these landforms.

Topographic controls on the annual runoff coefficient and implications for landscape evolution across semiarid Qilian Mountains, NE Tibetan Plateau

The combination of different topographic and climatic conditions results in varied precipitation-runoff relations, which in turn influences hillslope erosion, sediment transport and bedrock incision across mountainous landscapes. The runoff coefficient is a suitable tool to represent precipitation-runoff relations, but the spatial distribution of the runoff coefficient across tectonically active mountains in semi-arid environments has received little attention because of limited data availability. We calculated annual runoff coefficients over 22 years for 26 drainage basins across the semi-arid Qilian Mountains based on: (i) annual discharge records; and (ii) the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset to enhance our understanding of the precipitation-runoff processes. The mean annual runoff coefficients show no obvious spatial trends. When compared to potential controlling factors, mean annual runoff coefficients are highly correlated with mean slope rather than any climatic characteristics (e.g., mean annual precipitation and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index). The slope-dependent runoff coefficient could theoretically have enhanced the topographic control on erosion rates and dampen the influence of precipitation. The enhanced discharge for drainage basins with less precipitation but steep topography in the western Qilian Mountains will enable fluvial incision to keep pace with ongoing uplift caused by the northward growth of the Qilian Mountains. The geomorphic implications are that tectonic rather than climatic factors are more significant for long-term landscape evolution in arid and semi-arid contexts.

Diachronous Tibetan Plateau landscape evolution derived from lava field geomorphology

Abstract Evolution of the Tibetan Plateau is important for understanding continental tectonics because of the plateau’s exceptional elevation (∼5 km above sea level) and crustal thickness (∼70 km). Patterns of long-term landscape evolution can constrain tectonic processes, but have been hard to quantify, in contrast to established data sets for strain, exhumation, and paleo-elevation. This study analyzes the relief of the bases and tops of 17 Cenozoic lava fields on the central and northern Tibetan Plateau. Analyzed fields have typical lateral dimensions of tens of kilometers, and so have an appropriate scale for interpreting tectonic geomorphology. Fourteen of the fields have not been deformed since eruption. One field is cut by normal faults; two others are gently folded, with limb dips <6°. Relief of the bases and tops of the fields is comparable to that of modern, internally drained parts of the plateau, and distinctly lower than that of externally drained regions. The lavas preserve a record of underlying low-relief bedrock landscapes at the time they were erupted, which have undergone little change since. There is an overlap in each area between younger published low-temperature thermochronology ages and the age of the oldest eruption in each area, here interpreted as the transition between the end of significant (>3 km) exhumation and plateau landscape development. This diachronous process took place between ∼32.5°N and ∼36.5°N and between ca. 40 Ma and ca. 10 Ma, advancing northwards at a long-term rate of ∼15 km/m.y. Results are consistent with incremental northward growth of the plateau, rather than a stepwise evolution or synchronous uplift.

Human influences on the present denudation rates of the Paulista Peripheral Depression, Brazil

Chemical weathering and soil erosion in large or small watersheds are used to understand the effect of evolution processes on the Earth's surface and climate. Currently, human-driven land use changes have substantial effects on landscape changes over a range of temporal and spatial scales. In this context, the Sorocaba River basin, São Paulo State, Brazil, is an ideal study area to assess human influence on the present denudation rates of the Paulista Peripheral Depression (PPD). Twelve fluvial water sample collections were carried out at the Sorocaba River mouth, covering one complete hydrological cycle (Jun/2009 to Jun/2010). In the same period, 46 rainfall events were sampled. All samples were analyzed for dissolved cations, anions and silica, and total dissolved solids (TDS). Total suspended solids (TSS) were measured only in fluvial samples. The export of TDS and TSS occurs mostly during the wet season, accounting for ca. 60% and 87% of the total dissolved solids and total suspended sediment transported in the hydrological cycle studied (2009/2010), respectively. The total annual specific flux of TSS was 74.27 t/km2/year (including soil erosion by agricultural activities), with a small portion being derived from the anthropogenic contributions (ca. 2%). The total annual specific flux of TDS (74.43 t/km2/year) was similar to the TSS, but after the correction of the atmospheric inputs and anthropogenic contributions (ca. 18 and 29%, respectively), this value decreased to 39.35 t/km2/year. The chemical weathering rate was 7.1 m/Myear and this process tended towards monosialitization (RE = 2.6), with an atmospheric/soil CO2 consumption rate of 3.3 × 105 mol/km2/year. The difference between the chemical weathering and soil removal rates (7.1 and 49.6 m/Myear, respectively) indicated that the soil thickness reduction occured in the Sorocaba River basin. The climatic control on chemical weathering and soil removal rates was clearly evidenced, with the highest values of denudation occurring in the wet and hot climatic conditions. However, the chemical weathering processes (RE index) was not sensitive to climatic controls. In order to assess human influence on chemical weathering and soil removal rates in the PPD, the results were compared with other works undertaken in this vast geomorphological province. Even considering the uncertainties associated with a number of data points, the chemical weathering and soil removal rates in the PPD observed in this study were approximately 4 and 7.5-fold higher than these natural denudation rates, respectively, evidencing the effect of recent land use changes on the present denudation rates in the PPD. Thus, this study reinforces the complexity of the human-landscape systems in São Paulo State and increases the values of long-term landscape evolution rates.

Long-term development of landscape openness and arable land use in an agricultural region of southern Sweden: the potential of REVEALS estimates using pollen records from wells

The twofold aim of this study was to investigate the long-term landscape development in an intensely cultivated region of south-western Scania, southern Sweden, and to discuss the potential of pollen records from wells for this purpose. Pollen records from 36 different wells from 12 archaeological sites were compiled. Based on 35 of the wells, ranging ca 800 cal bc–cal ad 1900, regional vegetation cover for seven different time-windows was quantified using the REVEALS model and a multiple small sites approach. According to the REVALS output, landscape openness was high and relatively constant during the last ca 2,500 years (open-land vegetation covered 90–97%), whereas arable land use expanded more gradually (cereal vegetation expanded from 9% cover 800–500 bc to 38% cover ad 1700–1900). This gradual increase in arable farming at the expense of grassland enabled an increase in food production within an already agriculturally colonized landscape. The REVEALS estimates based on pollen records from wells were in general accordance with earlier published REVEALS reconstructions based on lake sediments from neighbouring regions. A GIS analysis of arable land use in south-western Scania around ad 1800, based on old cadastral maps, gave similar results as the REVEALS reconstruction of cereal vegetation cover for the ad 1700–1900 time-window. It gives support to the conclusion that pollen records from wells may be used for REVEALS reconstructions of past vegetation cover.
