Electrical Excitation of Long-Range Surface Plasmons in PC/OLED Structure with Two Metal Nanolayers

Long-range surface plasmon excitation and photoisomerization of Azobenzene dye

ABSTRACTEnhancement of photoisomerization of Azobenzene dye Chicago Sky Blue 6B (CSB) was attempted using long-range surface plasmon resonance (LRSPR). The CSB film was prepared on a grating substrate with metal film for LRSPR, and its transmission light property was investigated before and after white light irradiation for photoisomerization. The transmission light was markedly changed by irradiation of p-polarized white light, and the change was attributed to photoisomerization of CSB induced by LRSPR which accompanies an intense electric field. Furthermore, the effect of LRSPR was significant compared to standard SPR.

Mechanism of giant Goos–Hänchen effect enhanced by long-range surface plasmonexcitation

The giant Goos–Hänchen shift on a long-range surface plasmon (LRSP) configuration isexamined theoretically. This lateral shift at the resonance of the LRSP can be two orders ofmagnitude greater than a wavelength. The analytical formulas of the radiative dampingand the intrinsic damping of the LRSP are derived. It is found that the thicknesses of thesecond medium and the metal film determine the radiative damping and the intrinsicdamping is illuminated by the imaginary part of the dielectric constant of the metal.Negative lateral beam shift occurs when the intrinsic damping is larger than the radiativedamping. The theoretical results show good agreement with the predictions of the formulas.

Long-range surface plasmon resonances in grating-waveguide structures

Resonant grating-waveguide structures were used for the excitation of long-range surface plasmons. Resonance spectral bandwidths of 1.9 nm were experimentally measured in both the reflected and transmitted intensities from these structures. Numerical calculations indicate that interference rather than the usual surface plasmon absorption mechanism plays the dominant role in the resonance response when the thickness of the guiding metal layer in the structures is reduced below 10 nm.

In this work, we have derived an expression for the second-harmonic generation from metal surfaces under the modified Kretschmann geometry (or Sarid's geometry) based on the hydrodynamic theory of a free electron gas. Numerical calculation shows that the harmonic generation is more than 2 orders of magnitude larger than that due to a single-boundary surface plasmon, if a long-range surface plasmon is excited on both sides of the thin silver film which is bounded by a glass substrate and an index-matched liquid. Resonant surface plasmons excited at some specific internal incident angles emanate a nonlinear wave with an intensity of 5 orders of magnitude greater than that due to long-range surface plasmon.
