Interaction of a pyrene derivative with cationic [60]fullerene in phospholipid membranes and its effects on photodynamic actions.

We have reported that upon visible light irradiation, ferrocene-porphyrin-[60]fullerene triad molecules yield long-lived charge-separated states, enabling the control of the plasma membrane potential (V m) in living cells. These previous studies indicated that the localization of the triad molecules in a specific intra-membrane orientation and the suppression of the photodynamic actions of the [60]fullerene (C60) moiety are likely important to achieve fast and safe control of V m, respectively. In this study, by mimicking our previous system of triad molecules and living cells, we report a simplified model system with a cationic C60 derivative (catC60) and a liposome with embedded 1-pyrenebutyric acid (PyBA) to demonstrate that the addition of PyBA was important to achieve fast and safer control of V m.

Monovalent nickel ion as ionization probe in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry

We have developed NiO/HM20, a matrix composed of NiO nanoparticles (NiO) loaded on zeolite surface, for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI MS). By photoexcitation, monovalent nickel ion (Ni+) was dominantly observed with high intensity. The mechanism of Ni+ production was studied by picosecond time-resolved emission spectroscopy. By loading NiO on the zeolite surface, a new relaxation pathway to other electronic excited states was observed, which increased the lifetime of electron–hole pairs and promoted the reduction of nickel. The long-lived charge-separated electronic excited state corresponding to the large polarization of NiO was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). The correlation between the Auger parameter related to the polarization energy and the Ni+ peak intensity in the mass spectrum was confirmed. By applying the developed NiO/HM20 matrix to the MS measurement of small molecules, we found that molecules were ionized through complex formation with Ni+ using the coordination of lone electron pairs or π-electrons in the analyte molecules.

Study on the Influence of Host-Guest Structure and Polymer Introduction on the Afterglow Properties of Doped Crystals.

Due to their low cost, good biocompatibility, and ease of structural modification, organic long-persistent luminescence (LPL) materials have garnered significant attention in organic light-emitting diodes, biological imaging, information encryption, and chemical sensing. Efficient charge separation and carrier migration by the host-guest structure or using polymers and crystal to build rigid environments are effective ways of preparing high-performance materials with long-lasting afterglow. In this study, four types of crystalline materials (MODPA: DDF-O, MODPA: DDF-CHO, MODPA: DDF-Br, and MODPA: DDF-TRC) were prepared by a convenient host-guest doping method at room temperature under ambient conditions, i.e., in the presence of oxygen. The first three types exhibited long-lived charge-separated (CS) states and achieved visible LPL emissions with durations over 7, 4, and 2 s, respectively. More surprisingly, for the DDF-O material prepared with PMMA as the polymer substrate, the afterglow time of DDF-O: PMMA was longer than 10 s. The persistent room-temperature phosphorescence effect caused by different CS state generation efficiencies and rigid environment were the main reason for the difference in LPL duration. The fourth crystalline material was without charge separation and exhibited no LPL because it was not a D-A system. The research results indicate that the CS state generation efficiency and a rigid environment are the key factors affecting the LPL properties. This work provides new understandings in designing organic LPL materials.

Photosynthetic biohybrid systems for solar fuels catalysis.

Photosynthetic reaction center (RC) proteins are finely tuned molecular systems optimized for solar energy conversion. RCs effectively capture and convert sunlight with near unity quantum efficiency utilizing light-induced directional electron transfer through a series of molecular cofactors embedded within the protein core to generate a long-lived charge separated state with a useable electrochemical potential. Of current interest are new strategies that couple RC chemistry to the direct synthesis of energy-rich compounds. This Feature Article highlights recent work from our lab on RC and RC-inspired hybrid systems that capture the Sun's energy and convert it to chemical energy in the form of H2, a carbon-neutral energy source derived from water. Biohybrids made from the Photosystem I (PSI) RC are among the best photocatalytic H2-producing protein hybrids to date. Targeted self-assembly strategies that couple abiotic catalysts to PSI translate to catalyst incorporation at intrinsic PSI sites within thylakoid membranes to achieve complete solar water-splitting systems. RC-inspired biohybrids interface synthetic photosensitizers and molecular catalysts with small proteins to create photocatalytic systems and enable the spectroscopic discernment of the structural features and electron transfer processes that underpin solar-driven proton reduction. In total, these studies showcase the incredible scientific opportunities photosynthetic biohybrid research provides for harnessing the optimal qualities of both artificial and natural photosynthetic systems and developing materials that capture, convert, and store solar energy as a fuel.

Peptide-Guided Metal-Organic Frameworks Spatial Assembly Sustain Long-Lived Charge-Separated State to Improve Photocatalytic Performance.

The controlled fabrication of spatial architectures using metal-organic framework (MOF)-based particles offers opportunities for enhancing photocatalytic performances. The understanding of the contribution of assembly to a precise photocatalytic mechanism, particularly from the perspective of charge separation and extraction dynamics, still poses challenges. The present report presents a facile approach for the spatial assembly of zinc imidazolate MOF (ZIF-8), guided by β-turn peptides (SAZH). We investigated the dynamics of photoinduced carriers using transient absorption spectroscopy. The presence of a long-lived internal charge-separated state in SAZH confirms its role as an intersystem crossing state. The formation of an assembly interface facilitates efficient electron transfer from SAZH to O2, resulting in approximately 2.6 and 2 times higher concentrations of superoxide (·O2-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), respectively, compared to those achieved with ZIF-8. The medical dressing fabricated from SAZH demonstrated exceptional biocompatibility and exhibited an outstanding performance in promoting wound restoration. It rapidly achieved hemostasis during the bleeding phase, followed by a nearly 100% photocatalytic killing efficiency against the infected site during the subsequent inflammatory phase. Our findings reveal a pivotal dynamic mechanism underlying the photocatalytic activity of control-assembled ZIF-8, providing valuable guidelines for the design of highly efficient MOF photocatalysts.

Excited-State Dynamics in Segregated Donor-Acceptor Stacks Versus a Peri-Bisdonor-Acceptor System.

The investigation of impact of through-space/through-bond electronic interaction among chromophores on photoexcited-state properties has immense potential owing to the distinct emergent photophysical pathways. Herein, the photoexcited-state dynamics of homo-sorted π-stacked aggregates of a naphthalenemonoimide and perylene-based acceptor-donor (NI-Pe) system and a fork-shaped acceptor-bisdonor (NI-Pe2) system possessing integrally stacked peri-substituted donors was examined. Femtosecond transient absorption (fsTA) spectra of NI-Pe monomer recorded in chloroform displayed spectroscopic signatures of the singlet state of Pe; 1Pe*, the charge-separated state; NI-⋅-Pe+⋅, and the triplet state of Pe; 3Pe*. The examination of ultrafast excited-state processes of NI-Pe aggregate in chloroform revealed faster charge recombination ( =1.75 ns) than the corresponding monomer ( =2.46 ns) which was followed by observation of a broad structureless band attributed to an excimer-like state. The fork-shaped NI-Pe2 displayed characteristic spectroscopic features of the NI radical anion (λmax~450 nm) and perylene dimer radical cation (λmax~520 nm) upon photoexcitation in non-polar toluene solvent in the nanosecond transient absorption (nsTA) spectroscopy. The investigation highlights the significance of intrinsic close-stacked arrangement of donors in ensuring a long-lived photoinduced charge-separated state ( =1.35 μs) in non-polar solvents via delocalization of radical cation between the donors.

Dynamic structural twist in metal-organic frameworks enhances solar overall water splitting.

Photocatalytic overall water splitting holds great promise for solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Maintaining charge separation is a major challenge but is key to unlocking this potential. Here we discovered a metal-organic framework (MOF) that shows suppressed charge recombination. This MOF features electronically insulated Zn2+ nodes and two chemically equivalent, yet crystallographically independent, linkers. These linkers behave as an electron donor-acceptor pair with non-overlapping band edges. Upon photoexcitation, the MOF undergoes a dynamic excited-state structural twist, inducing orbital rearrangements that forbid radiative relaxation and thereby promote a long-lived charge-separated state. As a result, the MOF achieves visible-light photocatalytic overall water splitting, in the presence of co-catalysts, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 3.09 ± 0.32% at 365 nm and shows little activity loss in 100 h of consecutive runs. Furthermore, the dynamic excited-state structural twist is also successfully extended to other photocatalysts. This strategy for suppressing charge recombination will be applicable to diverse photochemical processes beyond overall water splitting.

(Invited) Molecular Donor-Acceptor Systems Derived from Aromatic Heterocycle-Fused Porphyrins

Photoinduced charge separation (CS) in molecular donor-acceptor (D-A) systems is crucial for achieving efficient solar energy conversion in various applications. Despite significant efforts to develop molecular D-A systems over the past decades, it remains a challenge to bring the lifetime of the charge separation state to ms range, which is much shorter than the CS lifetime (~1 s) in natural photosynthetic systems. In this talk, a donor-acceptor system with long-lived charge-separation state (37.2 μs) will be presented. This donor-acceptor system was derived from π-extended porphyrins fused with aromatic heterocycles. Porphyrins fused with aromatic heterocycles represent one fascinating yet very challenging frontiers in chemistry and materials science.1-4 The Wang group has been engaged in developing concise and versatile synthetic and functionalization methods for π-extended porphyrins. The availability of these methods offers easy access to many π-extended porphyrins with novel functionalities.5-7 In this talk, the synthesis, characterization, and the optical and photophysical properties of π-extended porphyrins fused with 5-, 6, and 7-membered rings including 12H-benzo[f]benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoindole and 1,10-phenanthroline, porphyrins will also be presented. (Invited) Exciton Dissociation in Mixed-Dimensionality SWCNT-Based Heterojunctions

Quantum-confined semiconductors provide highly tunable optical and electrical properties for a wide variety of emerging applications. Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNTs) have shown tremendous potential in applications ranging from digital logic, biological imaging, quantum information processing, photovoltaics, and thermoelectric energy harvesting. Energy harvesting applications rely critically upon the creation of tailored interfaces that enable the movement of energetic species (excitons, electrons, holes) in specified directions. In this talk, I will discuss the use of a variety of rationally designed “mixed-dimensionality” heterojunctions between s-SWCNTs and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers to harvest visible/near-infrared photons and convert these excitations into long-lived charge-separated states. Type-II heterojunctions between s-SWCNTs and TMDCs enable rapid exciton dissociation and microsecond charge-separated state lifetimes. We have developed new TMDC/SWCNT/TMDC trilayer architectures that enable charge transfer cascades for improving charge separation yield and lifetime. These trilayer architectures allow us to probe out-of-plane carrier diffusion in the nanotube layer and the degree to which bound interfacial excitons impact the photophysics in these mixed-dimensionality heterostructures. I will also discuss the methodology by which we attempt to quantify the photoinduced exciton dissociation quantum yields in these nanoscale heterostructures. Using several heterostructure results, we are attempting to narrow in on appropriate ways to quantify the local dielectric constant and exciton size in both the SWCNT and TMDC components, each of which impact the estimated charge carrier yields. Taken together, these studies provide fundamental insights into the links between ground-state thermodynamics and excited-state dynamics for model nanoscale heterojunctions used to harvest solar energy and produce long-lived charge-separated states.

Symmetry Breaking Charge Separation in Far-Red Absorbing Bisstyryl-Bodipy Dimers

Symmetry breaking charge transfer is one of the important photo-events occurring in photosynthetic reaction centers that is responsible for initiating electron transfer leading to a long-lived charge-separated state and has been successfully employed in light-to-electricity converting optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the synthesis of far-red absorbing and emitting BODIPY-dimer to undergo symmetry-breaking charge transfer leading to charge-separated states of appreciable lifetimes in polar solvents. Compared to its monomer analog, both steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence originating from the S1 state of the dimer revealed quenching which increased with an increase in solvent polarity. The electrostatic potential map from DFT and the time-dependent DFT calculations suggested the existence of a quadrupolar type charge transfer state in polar solvents, and the singlet excited state to be involved in the charge separation process. The electrochemically determined redox gap to be smaller than the energy of the S1 state supporting thermodynamic feasibility of the envisioned symmetry-breaking charge transfer and separation. The spectrum of the charge-separated state arrived from spectroelectrochemical studies, revealing diagnostic peaks helpful for transient spectral interpretation. Finally, ultrafast transient pump-probe spectroscopy provided conclusive evidence of diabatic charge separation in polar solvents by far-red pulsed laser light irradiation. The measured lifetime of the final charge-separated states was found to be 165 ps in dichlorobenzene, 140 ps in benzonitrile, and 43 ps in dimethyl sulfoxide, revealing their significance in light energy harvesting, especially from the less-explored far-red region.

Charge Transfer and Intersystem Crossing in Compact Naphthalenediimide-Phenothiazine Triads: Synthesis and Study of the Photophysical Property with Transient Optical and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Methods.

In order to obtain a long-lived charge separation (CS) state in compact electron donor-acceptor molecular systems, we prepared a series of naphthalenediimide (NDI)-phenothiazine (PTZ) triads, with phenylene as the linker between the donor and acceptor. Conformation restriction is imposed to control the mutual orientation of the NDI and PTZ units by attaching methyl groups on the phenylene linker to tune the electronic coupling between the donor and the acceptor. Moreover, the PTZ moiety was oxidized to sulfoxide to tune the ordering of the CS state and the 3LE state (LE: locally excited state). UV-vis absorption spectra indicate electronic coupling between NDI with the phenylene linker as well as the PTZ units, manifested by the appearance of a charge-transfer (CT) absorption band, whereas this coupling is devoid in the triads with conformation restriction imposed. Fluorescence is strongly quenched in the triads compared to the reference compound, indicating electron transfer upon photoexcitation. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra indicate that the CS takes 0.8 ps, and then the 3LE state is formed by charge recombination in 83 ps. Nanosecond transient absorption (ns-TA) spectra show that the 3NDI state was observed in nonpolar solvents such as cyclohexane (triplet state lifetime: 95.7 μs), whereas the CS state was observed in more polar solvents. The CS state lifetimes are up to 1.2 μs (in toluene). Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of the triads in toluene consist of two types of signals: CS states (narrower signals, ∼10 mT) and 3LE states (broader signals, ∼50 to 200 mT). In the spectra of the triads containing PTZ, the CS state signals dominate, whereas for the triads containing oxidized PTZ, the 3NDI signals (zero-field splitting D ≈ 2000 MHz) prevail, both observations being in agreement with the ns-TA spectral studies. The electron spin polarization phase pattern of the 3NDI states of the triads indicates that the intersystem crossing (ISC) mechanism is spin-orbit charge-transfer ISC. Considering the 3CS state as ion pairs, the electron-exchange energy (J) is determined to be -39 to -59 MHz, and the electron spin dipolar interaction is 83-92 MHz.

Facile Construction of a Double-Heterojunction Perovskite Quantum Dot System for Efficient Photocatalytic Cr6+ Reduction.

Based on their excellent stability, high carrier mobility, and wide photoresponse range, composites formed by embedding perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) into metal-organic frameworks (PQDs@MOF) show great development potential in the field of photocatalysis, including the toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) degradation, CO2 reduction, H2 production, etc. However, the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers is still a major obstacle to the improvement of photocatalytic performance, and the internal mechanism of photocatalysis is still unclear. In this work, we construct a novel double heterojunction photocatalyst by encapsulating CsPbBr3 PQDs in Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (UiO-67) and loading additional hole-acceptor pentylenetetrazol (PTZ). Spontaneous photoinduced charge-transfer and separation between interfaces are confirmed by time-resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, compared with pure UiO-67, the photoactivity of CsPbBr3 PQDs@UiO-67@PTZ increased 3-fold due to the long-lived charge-separated state. Our findings provide a new guideline for the design of PQDs@MOF-based photocatalysts with long-lived photogenerated carriers and outstanding photocatalytic activity.

Aggregation promotes charge separation in fullerene-indacenodithiophene dyad

Fast photoinduced charge separation (CS) and long-lived charge-separated state (CSS) in small-molecules facilitate light-energy conversion, while simultaneous attainment of both remains challenging. Here we accomplish this through aggregation based on fullerene-indacenodithiophene dyads. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that, compared to solution, the CS time in aggregates is accelerated from 41.5 ps to 0.4 ps, and the CSS lifetime is prolonged from 311.4 ps to 40 μs, indicating that aggregation concomitantly promotes fast CS and long-lived CSS. Fast CS arises from the hot charge-transfer states dissociation, opening up additional resonant channels to free carriers (FCs); subsequently, charge recombination into intramolecular triplet CSS becomes favorable mediated by spin-uncorrelated FCs. Different from fullerene/indacenodithiophene blends, the unique CS mechanism in dyad aggregates reduces the long-lived CSS dependence on molecular order, resulting in a CSS lifetime 200 times longer than blends. This endows the dyad aggregates to exhibit both photoelectronic switch properties and superior photocatalytic capabilities.

Long-lived photoinduced charge separation in adamantane-bridged donor-acceptor dyads: A case of adamantane bridge conferring orthogonal donor-acceptor orientation and restricted rotation

Design of compact donor-acceptor dyads that can exhibit charge separated (CS) state lifetimes extending to the microsecond time domain remains a major challenge even today. A simple but effective design strategy that can lead to long CS state lifetimes, in at least a few compact dyads, is still elusive. Herein we propose that use of adamantane (AD) as bridge can enhance CS state lifetimes in small molecule donor-acceptor dyads. This paper reports AD-bridged dyads, AN-AD-NB and PY-AD-NB, wherein the anthracene (or pyrene) donor and nitrobenzene acceptor are attached to bridgehead positions of AD. The singlet CS states generated upon irradiation were long-lived (lifetimes >1 μs) and decayed to the ground and local triplet states, simultaneously. Electron transfer reactions of the CS state with secondary donor and acceptor established that the CS state is sufficiently long-lived to participate in intermolecular reactions. X-ray crystal structure of the AN-AD-NB dyad reveals that the donor and acceptor are orthogonally oriented, which reduces the donor-acceptor interaction, and thereby the charge recombination rate, significantly. By analysing the X-ray structure, we predict that all adamantane-bridged compact dyads will have orthogonal donor-acceptor orientation and exhibit long-lived CS states. We also report studies with bisadamantyl-substituted dyads and the results confirmed that the local triplets are formed from the CS state through hyperfine interaction. Based on our work we propose that the hyperfine interaction, which is not expected to occur in compact dyads because of the short donor-acceptor separation, can indeed occur if the CS state is sufficiently long-lived.

Photodriven electron-transfer dynamics in a series of heteroleptic Cu(I)-anthraquinone dyads.

Solar fuels catalysis is a promising route to efficiently harvesting, storing, and utilizing abundant solar energy. To achieve this promise, however, molecular systems must be designed with sustainable components that can balance numerous photophysical and chemical processes. To that end, we report on the structural and photophysical characterization of a series of Cu(I)-anthraquinone-based electron donor-acceptor dyads. The dyads utilized a heteroleptic Cu(I) bis-diimine architecture with a copper(I) bis-phenanthroline chromophore donor and anthraquinone electron acceptor. We characterized the structures of the complexes using x-ray crystallography and density functional theory calculations and the photophysical properties via resonance Raman and optical transient absorption spectroscopy. The calculations and resonance Raman spectroscopy revealed that excitation of the Cu(I) metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transition transfers the electron to a delocalized ligand orbital. The optical transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that each dyad formed the oxidized copper-reduced anthraquinone charge-separated state. Unlike most Cu(I) bis-phenanthroline complexes where increasingly bulky substituents on the phenanthroline ligands lead to longer MLCT excited-state lifetimes, here, we observe a decrease in the long-lived charge-separated state lifetime with increasing steric bulk. The charge-separated state lifetimes were best explained in the context of electron-transfer theory rather than with the energy gap law, which is typical for MLCT excited states, despite the complete conjugation between the phenanthroline and anthraquinone moieties.

Achieving Long-Lived Charge Separated State through Ultrafast Interfacial Hole Transfer in Redox Sites-Isolated CdS Nanorods for Enhanced Photocatalysis.

As opposed to natural photosynthesis, a significant challenge in a semiconductor-based photocatalyst is the limited hole extraction efficiency, which adversely affects solar-to-fuel efficiency. Recent studies have demonstrated that photocatalysts featuring spatially isolated dual catalytic oxidation/reduction sites can yield enhanced hole extraction efficiencies. However, the decay dynamics of excited states in such photocatalysts have not been explored. Here a ternary barbell-shaped CdS/MoS2/Cu2S heterostructure is prepared, comprising CdS nanorods (NRs) interfaced with MoS2 nanosheets at both ends and Cu2S nanoparticles on the sidewall. By using transient absorption (TA) spectra, highly efficient charge separation within the CdS/MoS2/Cu2S heterostructure are identified. This is achieved through directed electron transfer to the MoS2 tips at a rate constant of >8.3 × 109 s-1 and rapid hole transfer to the Cu2S nanoparticles on the sidewall at a rate of >6.1 × 1010 s-1, leading to an exceptional overall charge transfer constant of 2.3 × 1011 s-1 in CdS/MoS2/Cu2S. The enhanced hole transfer efficiency results in a remarkably prolonged charge-separated state, facilitating efficient electron accumulation within the MoS2 tips. Consequently, the ternary CdS/MoS2/Cu2S heterostructure demonstrates a 22-fold enhancement in visible-light-driven H2 generation compare to pure CdS nanorods. This work highlights the significance of efficient hole extraction in enhancing the solar-to-H2 performance of semiconductor-based heterostructure.

Thermo-Chemical Cues-Mediated Strategy to Control Peptide Self-Assembly and Charge Transfer Complexation.

Peptide amphiphiles (PAs) are known for their remarkable ability to undergo molecular self-assembly, a process that is highly responsive to the local microenvironment. Herein, we design a pyrene tethered peptide amphiphile Py-VFFAKK, 1 that exhibits pathway-driven self-assembly from metastable nanoparticles to kinetically controlled nanofibers and thermodynamically stable twisted bundles upon modulations in pH, temperature, and chemical cues. The presence of the pyrene moiety ensures donation of the electron to an electron acceptor, namely, 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), to form a supramolecular charge transfer complex in aqueous solution that was studied in detail with microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Excitation of the donor species in its excimer state facilitates electron donation to the acceptor moiety, paving away a long-lived charge-separated state that persists for over a nanosecond, as ascertained through transient absorption spectroscopy. Finally, the self-assembled charge transfer complex is explored toward antimicrobial properties with Escherichia coli while maintaining biocompatibility toward L929 mice fibroblast cells.

Suppression of Charge Recombination by Vertical Arrangement of A Donor Moiety on Flat Planar Dyes for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

In dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), flat planar dyes (e. g., highly light-harvesting porphyrins and corroles) with multiple anchoring groups are known to adopt a horizontal orientation on TiO2 through the multiple binding to TiO2. Due to the strong electronic coupling between the dye and TiO2, fast charge recombination between the oxidized dye and an electron in TiO2 occurs, lowering the power conversion efficiency (η). To overcome this situation, an additional donor moiety can be placed on top of the planar dye on TiO2 to slow down the undesirable charge recombination. Here we report the synthesis and photovoltaic properties of a triarylamine (TAA)-tethered gold(III) corrole (TAA-AuCor). The DSSC with TAA-AuCor using iodine redox shuttle exhibited the highest η-value among corrole-based DSSCs, which is much higher than that with the reference AuCor. The transient absorption spectroscopies clearly demonstrated that fast electron transfer from the TAA moiety to the corrole radical cation in TAA-AuCor competes with the undesirable charge recombination to generate long-lived charge separated state TAA⋅+-Cor/TiO2⋅- efficiently. Consequently, the introduction of the TAA moiety enhanced the η-value remarkably, demonstrating the usefulness of our new concept to manipulate charge-separated states toward highly efficient DSSCs.
