Perinatal mortality after Chornobyl in contaminated regions of Ukraine.

Belarus and Ukraine were the countries most affected by the consequences of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. A study of perinatal mortality in Belarus found a highly statistically significant increase in the 1990s in the most contaminated oblast Gomel but no increase during this period in the rest of Belarus. As a possible mechanism to interpret this increase as a late Chornobyl effect, it has been suggested that strontium-90 contained in Chornobyl fallout, incorporated during menarche, impairs the immune system of pregnant women which in turn increases perinatal mortality. In the present study, this hypothesis is tested using data from Ukraine. Annual data on perinatal mortality, in the period 1981-2006 were provided by the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine. Trends in perinatal mortality rates in the most contaminated regions of Ukraine (Kyiv and Zhytomyr oblasts and the city of Kyiv; study region) were compared with rates in the rest of Ukraine (control region). To identify any differences in perinatal mortality trends between the study and control regions, the ratios of perinatal mortality rates in the study region to the rates in the control region were analyzed using the calculated strontium concentration as a predictor. A trend analysis of perinatal mortality rates in Ukraine revealed two bell-shaped deviations from a long-term exponential trend with maxima at the beginning and end of the 1990s. The same pattern was found in the data from the study and control regions, but the deviations were almost three times higher in the study region than in the control region. An analysis of the ratios of perinatal mortality rates in the study region to the rates in the control region (odds ratios) showed an increase and decrease during the 1990s which was approximated by a lognormal density distribution. The calculated strontium concentration, when used as a predictor, also fitted the data well. Thus, the data from Ukraine confirms the results from Belarus. The analysis of the odds ratios revealed about 1000 excess perinatal deaths in the study region in the period 1990-2004. The corresponding figure for Ukraine as a whole was estimated at 3500 perinatal deaths. It is hypothesized that the observed increase in perinatal mortality in the 1990s may be a late effect of incorporated strontium-90 on the immune system of pregnant women. The analysis is based on a theoretical model, as no data on strontium concentrations were available; the results should therefore be interpreted with caution. An updated study for Belarus would be desirable to corroborate the results.

Anomaly Detection in Liquid Sodium Cold Trap Operation with Multisensory Data Fusion Using Long Short-Term Memory Autoencoder

Sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFR), which use high temperature fluid near ambient pressure as coolant, are one of the most promising types of GEN IV reactors. One of the unique challenges of SFR operation is purification of high temperature liquid sodium with a cold trap to prevent corrosion and obstructing small orifices. We have developed a deep learning long short-term memory (LSTM) autoencoder for continuous monitoring of a cold trap and detection of operational anomaly. Transient data were obtained from the Mechanisms Engineering Test Loop (METL) liquid sodium facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The cold trap purification at METL is monitored with 31 variables, which are sensors measuring fluid temperatures, pressures and flow rates, and controller signals. Loss-of-coolant type anomaly in the cold trap operation was generated by temporarily choking one of the blowers, which resulted in temperature and flow rate spikes. The input layer of the autoencoder consisted of all the variables involved in monitoring the cold trap. The LSTM autoencoder was trained on the data corresponding to cold trap startup and normal operation regime, with the loss function calculated as the mean absolute error (MAE). The loss during training was determined to follow log-normal density distribution. During monitoring, we investigated a performance of the LSTM autoencoder for different loss threshold values, set at a progressively increasing number of standard deviations from the mean. The anomaly signal in the data was gradually attenuated, while preserving the noise of the original time series, so that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) averaged across all sensors decreased below unity. Results demonstrate detection of anomalies with sensor-averaged SNR < 1.

Chandra measurements of gas homogeneity and turbulence at intermediate radii in the Perseus Cluster

ABSTRACT We present a Chandra study of surface brightness fluctuations in the diffuse intracluster medium of the Perseus Cluster. Our study utilizes deep, archival imaging of the cluster core as well as a new mosaic of 29 short $\, 5\,$-ks observations extending in eight different directions out to radii of $r_{500} \sim 2.2\, r_{2500}$. Under the assumption that the distribution of densities at a given radius is log-normally distributed, two important quantities can be derived from the width of the log-normal density distribution on a given spatial scale: the density bias, that is equal to the square root of the clumping factor C; and the one-component turbulent velocity, vk,1D. We forward-model all contributions to the measured surface brightness, including astrophysical and particle background components, and account for the Poisson nature of the measured signal. Measuring the distribution of surface brightness fluctuations in 1 arcmin2 regions, spanning the radial range $0.3\rm {-}2.2\, r_{2500}$ ($7.8\rm {-}57.3\,$ arcmin), we find a small to moderate average density bias of around $3{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ at radii below $1.6\, r_{2500}$. We also infer an average turbulent velocity at these radii of V1D < 400 km s−1. Direct confirmation of our results on turbulent velocities inferred from surface brightness fluctuations should be possible using the X-ray calorimeter spectrometers to be flown aboard the XRISM and Athena observatories.

Shock–multicloud interactions in galactic outflows – I. Cloud layers with lognormal density distributions

ABSTRACT We report three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of shocks (${\cal M_{\rm shock}}\ge 4$) interacting with fractal multicloud layers. The evolution of shock–multicloud systems consists of four stages: a shock-splitting phase in which reflected and refracted shocks are generated, a compression phase in which the forward shock compresses cloud material, an expansion phase triggered by internal heating and shock re-acceleration, and a mixing phase in which shear instabilities generate turbulence. We compare multicloud layers with narrow ($\sigma _{\rho }=1.9\bar{\rho }$) and wide ($\sigma _{\rho }=5.9\bar{\rho }$) lognormal density distributions characteristic of Mach ≈ 5 supersonic turbulence driven by solenoidal and compressive modes. Our simulations show that outflowing cloud material contains imprints of the density structure of their native environments. The dynamics and disruption of multicloud systems depend on the porosity and the number of cloudlets in the layers. ‘Solenoidal’ layers mix less, generate less turbulence, accelerate faster, and form a more coherent mixed-gas shell than the more porous ‘compressive’ layers. Similarly, multicloud systems with more cloudlets quench mixing via a shielding effect and enhance momentum transfer. Mass loading of diffuse mixed gas is efficient in all models, but direct dense gas entrainment is highly inefficient. Dense gas only survives in compressive clouds, but has low speeds. If normalized with respect to the shock-passage time, the evolution shows invariance for shock Mach numbers ≥10 and different cloud-generating seeds, and slightly weaker scaling for lower Mach numbers and thinner cloud layers. Multicloud systems also have better convergence properties than single-cloud systems, with a resolution of eight cells per cloud radius being sufficient to capture their overall dynamics.

Sustainable forest management, which based on the balance of ecological, economic and social aspects, requires a continuous updating and developing tools of objective assessment of the current state and further prediction changes of all elements of the forest ecosystem. Currently, questions related to the forecasting in the forestry is very important for actualization the databases in cases when using the continuous forest inventory. Vegetative origin oak stands play an important role in forming natural ecosystems in the Ukrainian forest-steppe zone. They represent 26 percent of all oak stands area, and, therefore, the question related to the growth modelling of biometric indices will be important in the future. The purpose of this research was to develop the growth models based on yield tables for the main biometric indices, such as: mean height, mean diameter, cross-sectional area per 1 ha and growing stock per 1 ha. Growth models for forecasting all specified biometric indices was based on the ratio of biometric index for the year ahead to the same index now taken from the forest growth tables for modal vegetative origin oak stands across dynamical site classes and the geographical location. The description of the obtained results was based on the lognormal density distribution function. The main parameters of mathematical models for the forecasting biometric indices were set using the nonlinear regression function via the IBM SPSS statistics software. Graphical and analytical methods were used for comparing the study results and analysing the obtained data. As a result of the study, the coefficients of the equation were obtained, which with sufficient accuracy describe the studied relations and forecasting the growth of stands according to the main biometric indices in the different age intervals. The deviation of growth modelling results for the main biometric indices, exhibit acceptable levels when compared to yield tables for vegetative origin Oak stands of the Ukrainian forest-steppe zone during all forecasting period and in percentage values are less than 1%, but for forecasting the stock per 1 ha for young forests the deviation can approach 4%. The forecasting period should preferably not exceed 10-15 years.

Molecular Gas Density Measured with H2CO and CS toward a Spiral Arm of M51

Abstract Observations of various molecular lines toward a disk region of a nearby galaxy are now feasible, and they are being employed as diagnostic tools to study star formation activities there. However, the spatial resolution attainable for a nearby galaxy with currently available radio telescopes is 10–1000 pc, which is much larger than the scales of individual star-forming regions and molecular-cloud cores. Hence, it is of fundamental importance to elucidate which part of an interstellar medium such spatially unresolved observations are tracing. Here we present sensitive measurements of the H2CO ( ) line at 72 GHz toward giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in the spiral arm of M51 using the NRO 45 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes. In conjunction with the previously observed H2CO (202 − 101) and CS (2 − 1 and 3 − 2) lines, we derive the H2 density of the emitting regions to be (0.6–2.6) × 104 cm−3 and (2.9–12) × 104 cm−3 for H2CO and CS, respectively, by the non-LTE analyses, where we assume the source size of 0.8–1 kpc and the gas kinetic temperature of 10–20 K. The derived H2 density indicates that the emission of H2CO and CS is not localized to star-forming cores, but is likely distributed over an entire region of GMCs. Such widespread distributions of H2CO and CS are also supported by models assuming lognormal density distributions over the 1 kpc region. Thus, contributions from the widespread less dense components should be taken into account for interpretation of the molecular emission observed with a GMC-scale resolution. The different H2 densities derived for H2CO and CS imply their different distributions. We discuss these differences in terms of the formation processes of H2CO and CS.

Filament formation in wind–cloud interactions– II. Clouds with turbulent density, velocity, and magnetic fields

We present a set of numerical experiments designed to systematically investigate how turbulence and magnetic fields influence the morphology, energetics, and dynamics of filaments produced in wind-cloud interactions. We cover 3D magnetohydrodynamic systems of supersonic winds impacting clouds with turbulent density, velocity, and magnetic fields. We find that log-normal density distributions aid shock propagation through clouds, increasing their velocity dispersion and producing filaments with expanded cross sections and highly-magnetised knots and sub-filaments. In self-consistently turbulent scenarios the ratio of filament to initial cloud magnetic energy densities is ~1. The effect of Gaussian velocity fields is bound to the turbulence Mach number: Supersonic velocities trigger a rapid cloud expansion; subsonic velocities only have a minor impact. The role of turbulent magnetic fields depends on their tension and is similar to the effect of radiative losses: the stronger the magnetic field or the softer the gas equation of state, the greater the magnetic shielding at wind-filament interfaces and the suppression of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. Overall, we show that including turbulence and magnetic fields is crucial to understanding cold gas entrainment in multi-phase winds. While cloud porosity and supersonic turbulence enhance the acceleration of clouds, magnetic shielding protects them from ablation and causes Rayleigh-Taylor-driven sub-filamentation. Wind-swept clouds in turbulent models reach distances ~15-20 times their core radius and acquire bulk speeds ~0.3-0.4 of the wind speed in one cloud-crushing time, which are three times larger than in non-turbulent models. In all simulations the ratio of turbulent magnetic to kinetic energy densities asymptotes at ~0.1-0.4, and convergence of all relevant dynamical properties requires at least 64 cells per cloud radius.

THE IONIZED GAS IN NEARBY GALAXIES AS TRACED BY THE 122 AND 205 μm TRANSITIONS

ABSTRACT The [N ii] 122 and 205 μm transitions are powerful tracers of the ionized gas in the interstellar medium. By combining data from 21 galaxies selected from the Herschel KINGFISH and Beyond the Peak surveys, we have compiled 141 spatially resolved regions with a typical size of ∼1 kpc, with observations of both [N ii] far-infrared lines. We measure [N ii] 122/205 line ratios in the ∼0.6–6 range, which corresponds to electron gas densities of n e ∼ 1–300 cm−3, with a median value of n e = 30 cm−3. Variations in the electron density within individual galaxies can be as high as a factor of ∼50, frequently with strong radial gradients. We find that n e increases as a function of infrared color, dust-weighted mean starlight intensity, and star-formation rate (SFR) surface density (ΣSFR). As the intensity of the [N ii] transitions is related to the ionizing photon flux, we investigate their reliability as tracers of the SFR. We derive relations between the [N ii] emission and SFR in the low-density limit and in the case of a log-normal distribution of densities. The scatter in the correlation between [N ii] surface brightness and ΣSFR can be understood as a property of the n e distribution. For regions with n e close to or higher than the [N ii] line critical densities, the low-density limit [N ii]-based SFR calibration systematically underestimates the SFR because the [N ii] emission is collisionally quenched. Finally, we investigate the relation between [N ii] emission, SFR, and n e by comparing our observations to predictions from the MAPPINGS-III code.

Supernova blast waves in wind-blown bubbles, turbulent, and power-law ambient media

Supernova (SN) blast waves inject energy and momentum into the interstellar medium (ISM), control its turbulent multiphase structure and the launching of galactic outflows. Accurate modelling of the blast wave evolution is therefore essential for ISM and galaxy formation simulations. We present an efficient method to compute the input of momentum, thermal energy, and the velocity distribution of the shock-accelerated gas for ambient media with uniform (and with stellar wind blown bubbles), power-law, and turbulent density distributions. Assuming solar metallicity cooling, the blast wave evolution is followed to the beginning of the momentum conserving snowplough phase. The model recovers previous results for uniform ambient media. The momentum injection in wind-blown bubbles depend on the swept-up mass and the efficiency of cooling, when the blast wave hits the wind shell. For power-law density distributions with $n(r) \sim$ $r^{-2}$ (for $n(r) > n_{_{\rm floor}}$) the amount of momentum injection is solely regulated by the background density $n_{_{\rm floor}}$ and compares to $n_{_{\rm uni}}$ = $n_{_{\rm floor}}$. However, in turbulent ambient media with log-normal density distributions the momentum input can increase by a factor of 2 (compared to the homogeneous case) for high Mach numbers. The average momentum boost can be approximated as $p_{_{\rm turb}}/\mathrm{p_{_{0}}}\ =23.07\, \left(\frac{n_{_{0,\rm turb}}}{1\,{\rm cm}^{-3}}\right)^{-0.12} + 0.82 (\ln(1+b^{2}\mathcal{M}^{2}))^{1.49}\left(\frac{n_{_{0,\rm turb}}}{1\,{\rm cm}^{-3}}\right)^{-1.6}$. The velocity distributions are broad as gas can be accelerated to high velocities in low-density channels. The model values agree with results from recent, computationally expensive, three-dimensional simulations of SN explosions in turbulent media.

Modelling the structure of molecular clouds – I. A multiscale energy equipartition

We present a model for describing the general structure of molecular clouds (MCs) at early evolutionary stages in terms of their mass-size relationship. Sizes are defined through threshold levels at which equipartitions between gravitational, turbulent and thermal energy $|W| \sim f(E_{\rm kin} + E_{\rm th})$ take place, adopting interdependent scaling relations of velocity dispersion and density and assuming a lognormal density distribution at each scale. Variations of the equipartition coefficient $1\le f\le 4$ allow for modelling of star-forming regions at scales within the size range of typical MCs ($\gtrsim$4 pc). Best fits are obtained for regions with low or no star formation (Pipe, Polaris) as well for such with star-forming activity but with nearly lognormal distribution of column density (Rosette). An additional numerical test of the model suggests its applicability to cloud evolutionary times prior to the formation of first stars.

Angular momentum of disc galaxies with a lognormal density distribution

By postulating that the majority of the mass and angular momentum of a disc galaxy is confined to the disc with a lognormal surface density distribution, and that galactic discs are substantially, if not fully, self-gravitating, it may be shown that the resultant rotation curves (RCs) display a good overall fit to observational data for a wide range of galaxy types. With this hypothesis, the total angular momentum $J$, and total energy |$E$| of 38 disc galaxies was computed and plotted against the derived disc masses, with best fit slopes for $J$ of $1.683\pm0.018$ and |$E$| of $1.643\pm0.038$, and a universal disc spin parameter $\lambda=0.423\pm0.014$. Using the disc parameters $V_{max}$ and $R_{max}$ as surrogates for the virial velocity and radius, a virial mass estimator $M_{disc}\propto{}R_{max}V_{max}^2$ was generated, with a log-log slope of $1.024\pm0.014$ for the 38 galaxies, and a proportionality constant $\lambda^*=1.47\pm0.20\times10^5M_\odot{}kpc^{-1}km^{-2}s^2$. This relationship has less scatter than $M_\odot\propto{}V^\alpha$, and may provide an alternative to the Tully-Fisher relation in determining virial disc masses.

Galaxy rotation curves with lognormal density distribution

The log-normal distribution represents the probability of finding randomly distributed particles in a micro canonical ensemble with high entropy. To a first approximation, a modified form of this distribution with a truncated termination may represent an isolated galactic disk, and this disk density distribution model was therefore run to give the best fit to the observational rotation curves for 37 representative galaxies. The resultant curves closely matched the observational data for a wide range of velocity profiles and galaxy types with rising, flat or descending curves in agreement with Verheijen's classification of 'R', 'F' and 'D' type curves, and the corresponding theoretical total disk masses could be fitted to a baryonic Tully Fisher relation (bTFR). Nine of the galaxies were matched to galaxies with previously published masses, suggesting a mean excess dynamic disk mass of dex0.61+/-0.26 over the baryonic masses. Although questionable with regard to other measurements of the shape of disk galaxy gravitational potentials, this model can accommodate a scenario in which the gravitational mass distribution, as measured via the rotation curve, is confined to a thin plane without requiring a dark-matter halo or the use of MOND.

The W43-MM1 mini-starburst ridge, a test for star formation efficiency models

Context: Star formation efficiency (SFE) theories are currently based on statistical distributions of turbulent cloud structures and a simple model of star formation from cores. They remain poorly tested, especially at the highest densities. Aims: We investigate the effects of gas density on the SFE through measurements of the core formation efficiency (CFE). With a total mass of $\sim2\times10^4$ M$_\odot$, the W43-MM1 ridge is one of the most convincing candidate precursor of starburst clusters and thus one of the best place to investigate star formation. Methods: We used high-angular resolution maps obtained at 3 mm and 1 mm within W43-MM1 with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer to reveal a cluster of 11 massive dense cores (MDCs), and, one of the most massive protostellar cores known. An Herschel column density image provided the mass distribution of the cloud gas. We then measured the 'instantaneous' CFE and estimated the SFE and the star formation rate (SFR) within subregions of the W43-MM1 ridge. Results: The high SFE found in the ridge ($\sim$6% enclosed in $\sim$8 pc$^3$) confirms its ability to form a starburst cluster. There is however a clear lack of dense cores in the northern part of the ridge, which may be currently assembling. The CFE and the SFE are observed to increase with volume gas density while the SFR steeply decreases with the virial parameter, $\alpha_{vir}$. Statistical models of the SFR may well describe the outskirts of the W43-MM1 ridge but struggle to reproduce its inner part, which corresponds to measurements at low $\alpha_{vir}$. It may be that ridges do not follow the log-normal density distribution, Larson relations, and stationary conditions forced in the statistical SFR models.

Shock interactions, turbulence and the origin of the stellar mass spectrum

Supersonic turbulence is an essential element in understanding how structure within interstellar gas is created and shaped. In the context of star formation, many computational studies show that the mass spectrum of density and velocity fluctuations within dense clouds, as well as the distribution of their angular momenta, trace their origin to the statistical and physical properties of gas that is lashed with shock waves. In this paper, we review the observations, simulations and theories of how turbulent-like processes can account for the structures we see in molecular clouds. We then compare traditional ideas of supersonic turbulence with a simpler physical model involving the effects of multiple shock waves and their interactions in the interstellar medium. Planar intersecting shock waves produce dense filaments and generate vortex sheets that are essential to create the broad range of density and velocity structure in clouds. As an example, the lower-mass behaviour of the stellar initial mass function can be traced to the tendency of a collection of shock waves to build up a lognormal density distribution (or column density). Vorticity--which is essential to produce velocity structure over a very broad range of length scales in shocked clouds--can also be generated by the passage of curved shocks or intersecting planar shocks through such media. Two major additional physical forces affect the structure of star-forming gas--gravity and feedback processes from young stars. Both of these can produce power-law tails at the high-mass end of the initial mass function.

Mathematical modeling of microfiltration of polydisperse suspension on heterogeneous membranes

The process of microfiltration in the dead-end mode when the flow of a polydispere suspension that has the log-normal density distribution of particle diameters is perpendicular to the membrane working surface has been considered. The probabilistic sieving mechanism developed earlier by the authors is used to describe the process of filtration through a heterogeneous membrane that has a bilog-normal diameter distribution density of pores. The integral equation for determining the productivity of the membrane in time is solved numerically for five different positions of the maximum of the diameter distribution density of particles relative to two maximums of the size distribution density of membrane pores. The results are illustrated by plots to reflect time changes in productivity and rejection factor of the membrane and in pore size distribution during pore blocking.

Stellar and substellar initial mass function: a model that implements gravoturbulent fragmentation and accretion

In this work, we derive the stellar initial mass function (IMF) from the superposition of mass distributions of dense cores, generated through gravoturbulent fragmentation of unstable clumps in molecular clouds (MCs) and growing through competitive accretion. MCs are formed by the turbulent cascade in the interstellar medium at scales L from 100 down to ~0.1 pc. Their internal turbulence is essentially supersonic and creates clumps with a lognormal distribution of densities n. Our model is based on the assumption of a power-law relationship between clump mass and clump density: n~m^x, where x is a scale-free parameter. Gravitationally unstable clumps are assumed to undergo isothermal fragmentation and produce protostellar cores with a lognormal mass distribution, centred around the clump Jeans mass. Masses of individual cores are then assumed to grow further through competitive accretion until the rest of the gas within the clump is being exhausted. The observed IMF is best reproduced for a choice of x=0.25, for a characteristic star formation timescale of ~5 Myr, and for a low star formation efficiency of ~10 %.

Asymmetries in extragalactic double radio sources: clues from 3D simulations of jet-disc interaction

Observational and theoretical studies of extragalactic radio sources have suggested that an inhomogeneous environment may be responsible for observed arm length asymmetries of jets and the properties of extended emission line regions in high redshift radio galaxies. We perform 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the interaction of a powerful extragalactic bipolar jet with a disc-shaped clumpy interstellar medium of log-normal density distribution and analyze the asymmetry. Furthermore, we compute the relation between jet asymmetry and the ISM properties by means of Monte Carlo simulations based on a 1D propagation model for the jet through the dense medium. We find that the properties of the ISM can be related to a probability distribution of jet arm length asymmetries: Disc density and height are found to have the largest effect on the asymmetry for realistic parameter ranges, while the Fourier energy spectrum of the ISM and turbulent Mach number only have a smaller effect. The hydrodynamic simulations show that asymmetries generally may be even larger than expected from the 1D model due to the complex interaction of the jet and its bow shock with gaseous clumps, which goes much beyond simple energy disposal. From our results, observed asymmetries of medium-sized local radio galaxies may be explained by gas masses of 10^9 to 10^10 solar masses in massive elliptical galaxies. Furthermore, the simulations provide a theoretical basis for the observed correlation that emission line nebulae are generally found to be brighter on the side of the shorter lobe in high redshift radio galaxies (McCarthy et al. 1991). This interaction of jets with the cold gas phase suggests that star formation in evolving high redshift galaxies may be affected considerably by jet activity.

A STATISTICAL STUDY OF THE MASS AND DENSITY STRUCTURE OF INFRARED DARK CLOUDS

How and when the mass distribution of stars in the Galaxy is set is one of the main issues of modern astronomy. Here, we present a statistical study of mass and density distributions of infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) and fragments within them. These regions are pristine molecular gas structures and progenitors of stars and so provide insights into the initial conditions of star formation. This study makes use of an IRDC catalog, the largest sample of IRDC column density maps to date, containing a total of ∼11,000 IRDCs with column densities exceeding cm−2 and over 50,000 single-peaked IRDC fragments. The large number of objects constitutes an important strength of this study, allowing a detailed analysis of the completeness of the sample and so statistically robust conclusions. Using a statistical approach to assigning distances to clouds, the mass and density distributions of the clouds and the fragments within them are constructed. The mass distributions show a steepening of the slope when switching from IRDCs to fragments, in agreement with previous results of similar structures. IRDCs and fragments are divided into unbound/bound objects by assuming Larson's relation and calculating their virial parameter. IRDCs are mostly gravitationally bound, while a significant fraction of the fragments are not. The density distribution of gravitationally unbound fragments shows a steep characteristic slope such as ΔN/Δlog(n) ∝ n−4.0±0.5, rather independent of the range of fragment mass. However, the incompleteness limit at a number density of ∼103 cm−3 does not allow us to exclude a potential lognormal density distribution. In contrast, gravitationally bound fragments show a characteristic density peak at n ≃ 104 cm−3 but the shape of the density distributions changes with the range of fragment masses. An explanation for this could be the differential dynamical evolution of the fragment density with respect to their mass as more massive fragments contract more rapidly. The IRDC properties reported here provide a representative view of the density and mass structure of dense molecular clouds before and during the earliest stages of star formation. These should serve as constraints on any theoretical or numerical model to identify the physical processes involved in the formation and evolution of structure in molecular clouds.

The Turbulent Warm Ionized Medium: Emission Measure Distribution and MHD Simulations

We present an analysis of the distribution of H-alpha emission measures for the warm ionized medium (WIM) of the Galaxy using data from the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) Northern Sky Survey. Our sample is restricted to Galactic latitudes |b| > 10. We removed sightlines intersecting nineteen high-latititude classical H II regions, leaving only sightlines that sample the diffuse WIM. The distribution of EM sin |b| for the full sample is poorly characterized by a single normal distribution, but is extraordinarily well fit by a lognormal distribution, with = 0.146 +/- 0.001 and standard deviation 0.190 +/- 0.001. drops from 0.260 +/- 0.002 at Galactic latitude 10<|b|<30 to 0.038 +/- 0.002 at Galactic latitude 60<|b|<90. The distribution may widen slightly at low Galactic latitude. We compare the observed EM distribution function to the predictions of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of isothermal turbulence within a non-stratified interstellar medium. We find that the distribution of EM sin |b| is well described by models of mildy supersonic turbulence with a sonic Mach number of ~1.4-2.4. The distribution is weakly sensitive to the magnetic field strength. The model also successfully predicts the distribution of dispersion measures of pulsars and H-alpha line profiles. In the best fitting model, the turbulent WIM occupies a vertical path length of 400-500 pc within the 1.0-1.8 kpc scale height of the layer. The WIM gas has a lognormal distribution of densities with a most probable electron density n_{pk} = 0.03 cm^{-3}. We also discuss the implications of these results for interpreting the filling factor, the power requirement, and the magnetic field of the WIM.

Interactions of a Light Hypersonic Jet with a Nonuniform Interstellar Medium

We present three-dimensional simulations of the interaction of a light hypersonic jet with an inhomogeneous thermal and turbulently supported disk in an elliptical galaxy. These simulations are applicable to the GPS/CSS phase of extragalactic radio sources. The interstellar medium in these simulations consists of a conventional hot (T ~ 107 K) component together with a warm (T ~ 104 K) turbulently supported disk whose local density is described by a lognormal density distribution and whose spatial structure is realized from a fractal power law. We model the jet as a light, supersonic nonrelativistic flow with parameters selected to be consistent with a relativistic jet with kinetic power just above the FR1/FR2 break. We identify four generic phases in the evolution of such a jet with the inhomogeneous interstellar medium: (1) an initial flood and channel phase, where progress is characterized by high-pressure gas finding changing weak points in the ISM, flowing through channels that form and reform over time; (2) a spherical, energy-driven bubble phase, where the bubble is larger than the disk scale, but the jet remains fully disrupted close to the nucleus; (3) a subsequent, rapid, jet break-out phase where the jet breaks free of the last obstructing dense clouds, becomes collimated once more, and pierces the spherical bubble; and (4) a classical phase, where the jet propagates in a momentum-dominated fashion similar to jets in single-component hot halos, leading to the classical jet-cocoon-bow shock structure. Mass transport in the simulations is investigated, and we propose a model for the morphology and component proper motions in the well-studied compact symmetric object 4C 31.04.
