Pengelolaan Guest House di Ubud Bali sebagai Pengembangan Nomadic Tourism

The existence of the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the current tourism trend, namely the workcation trend where tourists work while traveling. One alternative tourism that follows the current trend is nomadic tourism. Lodging is a potential tourism sector that needs to be developed into nomadic tourism, considering that digital nomad tourists have a long time to stay and stay in lodgings, this sector is felt to be able to boost tourism sector income. Therefore, this study aims to describe the management of lodging in Ubud Bali as the development of nomadic tourism. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques through literature studies and then processed with qualitative data analysis techniques. The results of this study concluded that the management of inns in Ubud Bali already contains components of nomadic tourism. However, there are several components that still need improvement, namely the management of the nomadic tourism attraction component and nomadic tourism amenities, while the management of the nomadic tourism access component has been going well. This research is expected to be a recommendation material for lodging managers to find components for the development of nomadic tourism which still need to be improved.

The role of the Lodging Manager in Overcoming HIV / AIDS Transmission in the Backpacker Tourism Area of Yogyakarta City, Indonesia: A Qualitative Study

Background: Backpacker tourists are dominated by young people who have a high adventurous spirit and are happy with freedom. This makes backpacker tourists both local and foreign at risk to engage in risky sexual behavior. In adolescents and young adults, risky sexual behavior that occurs during holidays is also accompanied by an increase in alcohol consumption, that brings more complex health impacts. Lodging has a strong role in preventing risky behavior by backpacker tourists. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the role of lodging managers in preventing transmission of HIV/AIDS in backpacker areas. Materials & Methods: In this qualitative research with a case-study approach, the participants were 20 informants who were selected by a purposive sampling method. Data were collected by in-depth interview and analyzed by content analysis. Results: The role carried out by the lodging manager to prevent HIV/AIDS transmission was identified as to refuse teenage guests who are sexually opposite couples rent a single room and not selling alcohol and condoms. Lodging also did not provide Female Sex Workers (FSW) services and rejected FSW requests from guests. Conclusion: This study identified the role of lodging manager in backpacker tourism area that was considered appropriate to reduce the risk of sexual behavior that can result in HIV/AIDS transmission.

DETERMINANTS OF WATER CONSUMPTION IN TOURISM LODGING SECTOR. THE CASE OF KAZAKHSTAN

Purpose – The main purpose of the paper is to identify, define and analyze the main variables that determine water consumption in the lodging industry, which usually accounts, on average, between the 6% and 10% of total operational costs. Design/Methodology/Approach – The research is based on a survey questionnaire distributed among lodging managers in summer 2016 in the Shchuchinsk-Burabay resort area (Kazakhstan). The regression model methodology has been used to determine the main drivers of water consumption in the tourism lodging facilities. Findings – The estimations obtained in the regression model reveal that the main determinants of water consumption are the total area of the lodging facility, the pool sizes, the type of accommodation (with a special attention to the sanatoriums sector) and the type of board offered. Our study also concludes that the implementation of water saving initiatives significantly reduces water consumption levels and constitutes an effective tool to minimize lodging water consumption. These results can be useful both for policy makers and accommodation managers to develop water management policies to guarantee water, both in quantity and quality, both for the resident population and for the tourism sector. Key managerial and financial accounting skills for private club managers: Comparison to lodging managers

ABSTRACTThis study provides empirical evidence of the comprehensive accounting skills by financial executives across the United States, and Canada believed important to private club general managers. This study’s purview extends to identify any significant differences or similarities in the accounting skills between the private club and lodging managers. Four hundred and one responses (211 from clubs and 190 from hotels) were received. The most critical accounting skills for club and lodging managers are understanding operating budgets, capital budgets, income statements, and analyses of variances. When comparing the accounting skills to managers between clubs and hotels, the ranks of importance are similar. The findings provide theoretical and practical implication for hospitality researchers, managers, and educators.

Predictors of Career Success Among Lodging Revenue Managers: Investigating Roles of Proactive Work Behaviors

ABSTRACTThis study integrated the growing literature of proactive work behavior with career success among lodging revenue managers. Proactive work behavior is a timely, relevant, and important research topic for today’s workplaces in the hospitality industry. The aim of this research was to test a model for linkage among four dimensions of proactive work behavior and career success, among 280 lodging revenue managers, while controlling for work experience, age, and gender. First, the confirmatory factor analyses examined the measurement models of proactive work behavior and career success. Next, hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated that all four dimensions of proactive work behaviors contributed positively to subjective career success, but not objective (extrinsic) career success.

Key Managerial Accounting Skills for Lodging Industry Managers: The Third Phase of a Repeated Cross-Sectional Study

ABSTRACTThis study is the third phase of a repeated cross-sectional study that explores the current rankings of important accounting skills to lodging managers and the changes in the importance of accounting skills to lodging managers over time. In this study, as with two prior studies, financial executives were asked to rate the importance of a list of managerial accounting skills used by hotel general managers. The top three managerial accounting skills were the operating budget, the income statement, and analysis of variances. This study can provide a better sense of the perception of importance of accounting skills utilized by lodging managers. It will be useful for hospitality educators in designing the curriculum for managerial accounting courses to meet the expectations of the current hospitality industry.

Learning in the service environment: the influence of diversity climate

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to examine how diversity climate in service organizations influence employee learning behavior. Additionally, the study examined the mediating effects of psychological safety and communication satisfaction between diversity climate and learning behavior.Design/methodology/approach– Data were collected from 128 hotel and lodging managers by administering survey questionnaires. The dual mediational model was tested using the mediation test suggested by Preacher and Hayes (2008).Findings– Results indicated that when managers perceived a positive diversity climate they also reported high engagement in learning behavior. Additionally, the study found the mediating effects of psychological safety and communication satisfaction.Originality/value– The importance of learning behavior has been noted by researchers and practitioners because of its influence on service performance. Learning behavior is especially important in complex, error prone, and fast changing businesses like the services industry. This research contributes to the existing body of research by examining the influence of diversity climate on learning behavior, which has not been investigated empirically in the literature. The current research not only makes a significant contribution to the learning and diversity literature, but also informs practitioners how learning behavior can be increased and how diversity climate can be created in within service organizations, in particularly hospitality.

Should Organizations Be Forgiving or Unforgiving? A Two-Study Replication of How Forgiveness Climate in Hospitality Organizations Drives Employee Attitudes and Behaviors

An organization’s forgiveness climate is pivotal in reducing negative and promoting positive consequences of errors, mistakes, or offenses in the workplace. This study examines the influence of a perceived forgiveness climate on learning behavior, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and intention to leave. Using quantitative cross-sectional data collected from 128 hotel and lodging managers, Study 1 revealed that a perceived forgiveness climate was significantly positively related to learning behavior and job satisfaction. Furthermore, the results demonstrated the mediating effect of learning behavior between a perceived forgiveness climate and job satisfaction and intention to leave. Study 2 confirmed this finding using 187 hospitality management students who work as frontline employees in various hospitality organizations. A perceived forgiveness climate was again found to significantly influence learning behavior and intention to leave, as well as organizational commitment. The results also confirmed the mediating effect of learning behavior. The findings suggest that organizations should promote a climate of forgiveness to influence employee attitudes and behaviors.

Festival attendees’ perceptions of green hotel practices

Lodging managers and festival organizers have an incentive to understand how festival attendees perceive hotels with green practices in place. Lodging managers that understand how to segment, target, and position their offerings to festival attendees, including sustainable practices, can maximize financial gains from festivals. Festival organizers have related interests: they want to minimize negative impacts on the physical environment and maximize positive customer experiences on- and off-site. To provide insights into festival attendees’ perceptions of green hotel practices that may assist both sets of stakeholders, the manuscript presents the results of a survey of convenience samples from two food festivals. The analysis relates perceptions of hotel desirability to characteristics that have been successfully used to segment consumers in the past. While gender, education, income, and environmental values did not have significant relationships with whether thirteen sustainable hotel practices increased hotel desirability, age, festival type, and environmental self-efficacy did. The results, which include ratings of the thirteen green practices, have practical implications for festival organizers, who may want to collaborate with greener hotels to minimize negative festival outcomes, and for lodging managers, who may want to segment festival audiences and appropriately position hotel sustainable practices for festival attendees.

The US traveler’s familiarity with and perceived credibility of lodging ecolabels

Despite the proliferating numbers and types of ecolabels for lodging in the United States, little is known about consumer reactions toward them. Thus, this study examines the US adult travelers’ familiarity with and perceived credibility of six ecolabels used by lodging firms in the market today, which vary in terms of industry scope (lodging only vs. multi-industry) and issuer type (profit, nonprofit, or government): Audubon International, Green Key Eco, TripAdvisor’s GreenLeaders, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Energy Star, and Green Business Bureau. Results based on 392 responses collected from a national online survey in April 2014 show that Energy Star and GreenLeaders had the highest levels of familiarity and perceived credibility, while familiarity and credibility levels for the other four ecolabels were relatively low, indicating critical needs for better marketing about ecolabels, overall. These results also provide lodging managers with important insight into consumer reactions toward the ecolabels currently existent and utilized by lodging firms and identify which ecolabels, if any, to pursue.

Internationalization of the Lodging Industry in the Light of Eclectic Paradigm

Abstract Efforts concerning presentation of products to consumers in wider areas, particularly in international markets, lead lodging managers to focus on internationalization. This study aims to investigate the entry mode selection operation of lodging enterprises. Eclectic paradigm, developed by Dunning (1993) , is used as a conceptual base for this study. Dunning's paradigm is an internationalization theory that relates to the advantages of ownership, location and internalization in lodging industry. Although the paradigm has been used in many service sector studies in international literature, there is still a lack of information about Turkish lodging industry. In accordance with the purpose of fill this gap, a questionnaire was conducted from international lodging enterprises in Mugla, the third destination of Turkey hosting the highest number of tourist. The results of the study are compared with the findings of previous researches. The findings obtained tend to confirm the applicability of the eclectic theory of foreign direct investment to lodging industry. It's expected that the findings of this study will contribute to selection of market entry decision making process by hotel managers, and provide new knowledge in internationalization literature, especially internationalization of Turkish lodging industry.

Managing language barriers in the workplace: The roles of job demands and resources on turnover intentions

Immigrants are a considerable growing segment of the hospitality workforce, but with an overwhelming majority of immigrant workers having limited English speaking abilities, hospitality managers are often challenged with communication barriers. The purpose of the current study was to examine the influence of managers’ communication satisfaction with limited English speaking employees on three work-related outcomes that can be influenced by working with limited English employees: role ambiguity, role conflict, and turnover intentions. A survey was completed by 130 hotel and lodging managers. The results of a mediation model showed that satisfaction with the quality of communication with limited English speaking employees reduced role ambiguity and role conflicts, which led to lower turnover intentions. Managers’ turnover intentions are not necessarily a direct effect of the communication quality with their limited English speaking subordinates, but due to the job demands that manifest in an environment with communication barriers, such as confusion and conflicting misunderstandings.

Hotel managers’ perceived diversity climate and job satisfaction: The mediating effects of role ambiguity and conflict

Given the increase of multiculturalism into the hospitality labor force, corporate investments in providing a positive diversity climate at work have increased over the last two decades. However, few studies have focused on managers’ perceived diversity climate and how their perceived diversity climate has an impact on their work experience, which is a significant gap in the literature considering that the hospitality workforce is diverse and multiracial. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of hotel managers’ perceived diversity climate on three outcomes: role ambiguity, role conflict, and job satisfaction. Survey data were collected from 130 hotel and lodging managers. The results showed that managers who perceived a positive diversity climate also reported less role ambiguity and role conflict, but more job satisfaction. Role ambiguity and role conflict mediated the relationship between perceived diversity climate and job satisfaction.

Acquisition Premiums and Performance Improvements for Acquirers and Targets in the Lodging Industry

Given that the stated purpose of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) is to create value for the newly merged firm, the M&A offer premium ought to be positively related to the realized benefits or realized synergies that result from combining the target and the acquirer. Not all empirical evidence supports this notion, however. Because some M&A activities have not been found to be consistently value enhancing, other M&A motives have been proposed, most notably empire building and personal rewards. In contrast to those notions, this paper’s analysis of lodging M&A results suggests that lodging M&A is in fact motivated by value creation. Furthermore, our evidence supports the supposition that the premium reflects the value of synergy, as postulated conceptually. Using a property-level dataset, this paper infers lodging managers’ intentions by investigating the relationship between the final offer premium paid to the target shareholders and the change in the pre- and postacquisition operating performance of the target’s and the acquirer’s properties. Refuting the argument of the market for corporate control as well as the non-value-related motives, this analysis finds that the premium is related to the performance changes of the acquirer’s properties but is not related to that of the target’s properties. Interestingly, this suggests that the target’s properties serve as a crucial resource to improve the performance of the acquirer’s properties, and consequently, the premium may be viewed as the payment to gain control over the targets’ resources.

Coping Strategies Used by Lodging Managers to Balance Work and Personal Lives: An Exploratory Study

The hospitality industry offers services to consumers around the clock, every day of the year. Lodging managers, in particular, are required to work long hours in a highly unpredictable and stressful environment. Consequently, a successful career in hotel management leaves little time for outside activities which often leads managers to leave such positions or the industry altogether. The purpose of this study is to explore the coping strategies used by lodging managers who have a successful balance between their work and personal lives. Eight coping strategies are identified by interviewing 15 lodging managers.

Do institutional investors favor firms with greater brand equity?

PurposeThe aim of this study is to investigate institutional investment behavior relating to lodging firms and their brand equity.Design/methodology/approachOrdinary least squares (OLS) and two‐stage least squares (2SLS) regressions are used. The dependent variable is institutional investor percentage and the independent variables are advertising expenditures, size, capital expenditures, proxy Q, debt ratio, price, share turnover and year.FindingsThe study found that institutional investors' holdings are positively related to advertising expenditures. There is a significant difference in institutional holdings between lodging firms with advertising expenditures and those without. Institutions favor lodging firms that have lower debt ratios. Institutional investors prefer small firms because they typically offer superior returns.Research limitations/implicationsFurther research may be done to see whether individual investors favor firms with brand equity. Additional research may be conducted in other segments, such as restaurants or casinos.Practical implicationsFindings may help lodging managers in raising financial capital from institutional investors; researchers in conducting future research on institutional investors; and educators in better describing institutional investors' important roles to hospitality students.Originality/valueThe paper is the first to show a relationship between institutional investors and advertising expenditures in the lodging industry.

How to Increase Response Rates When Surveying Hospitality Managers for Curriculum-Related Research: Lessons from Past Studies and Interviews with Lodging Professionals

ABSTRACT Continuous industry input is needed to keep hospitality management curricula current, relevant, and applicable. However, barriers including low response rates are reported when surveying hospitality professionals about competencies and skills essential for success. In response, this study sought to identify successful strategies used by researchers when surveying hospitality managers through mail surveys. Interviews conducted with lodging managers indicated potential strategies for increasing response rates when using online surveys. These strategies are currently absent in the literature. Interview results are presented.

The Importance of Quality, Satisfaction, Trust, and Image in Relation to Rural Tourist Loyalty

In the past decade, tourism firms have become aware of the great benefits of maintaining a solid base of loyal customers. Because rural tourism is a relatively new phenomenon in some countries, the main antecedent of tourism loyalty remains infrequently studied in rural lodgings. In this work, a structural equations model is explored, with PLS technique, giving relevance to the interrelationships among image, quality, satisfaction, and trust and among these variables and the tourists' behavior variables. Instruments are identified and exploratory research was undertaken among rural tourists of the main rural lodgings in two border regions of Spain and Portugal. The results confirm image as a direct antecedent of perceived quality, satisfaction, trust, and loyalty for rural tourism, too. The analysis also confirmed that quality has a positive influence on satisfaction and loyalty, and trust has a positive influence on loyalty. Image is shown as a key factor to rural lodging managers. This study may help rural tourism managers to develop and implement effective relationship marketing strategies.

A Conceptual Framework for Managing Lodging Brands: A Balanced‐Scorecard Approach

The issue of brand management remains a formidable challenge for lodging organizations and lodging brand managers. This challenge is partly due to the fact that effective brand management requires an all‐inclusive and comprehensive organizational approach. This paper proposes a framework that uses the balance scorecard (BSC) as the basis for brand management. The framework proposes both a proactive and reactive approach to brand management through the use of performance measures or perspectives, which form the underlying components of the BSC. These are the financial perspective, the customer perspective, process perspective, and the learning perspective. The paper enhances and expands this BSC framework by including a brand maintenance and enhancement component.

Managerial Expectations for New Hires

ABSTRACT The vacation ownership (timeshare) industry is the fastest growing segment in the hospitality industry. With this growth is the need to attain qualified managers and hospitality programs must ascertain the skills that are necessary to meet the demands of this market. The purpose of this study was to discover if there were any significant differences between traditional lodging managers and timeshare managers based upon a manager's knowledge, ability, and attitude related to their job duties. The study did discover some areas that were deemed more important to timeshare managers. These results could be used to help potential employees in the lodging industry discover what type of environment would best match their skill set.
