Multi-tracing the primordial Universe with future surveys

The fluctuations generated by Inflation are nearly Gaussian in the simplest models, but may be non-Gaussian in more complex models, potentially leading to signatures in the late Universe. In particular, local-type primordial non-Gaussianity induces scale-dependent bias in tracers of the matter distribution. This non-Gaussian imprint in the tracer power spectrum survives at late times on ultra-large scales where nonlinearity is negligible. In order to combat the problem of growing cosmic variance on these scales, we use a multi-tracer analysis that combines different tracers to maximise any primordial signal. Previous work has investigated the combination of a spectroscopic galaxy survey with a 21 cm intensity mapping survey in single-dish mode. We extend this work by considering instead the case where the 21 cm intensity mapping survey is optimised for interferometer mode. As examples, we use two multi-tracer pairs of surveys: one at high redshift (1≤z≤2\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$1\\le z\\le 2$$\\end{document}) and one at very high redshift (2≤z≤5\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$2\\le z\\le 5$$\\end{document}). The 21 cm surveys are idealised surveys based on HIRAX and PUMA. We implement foreground-avoidance filters and use detailed models of the interferometer thermal noise. The galaxy surveys are idealised surveys based on Euclid and MegaMapper. Via a simple Fisher forecast, we illustrate the potential of the multi-tracer. Our results show a ∼\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\sim $$\\end{document} 20–30% improvement in precision on local primordial non-Gaussianity from the multi-tracer. Furthermore, we investigate the effects on constraints of varying the parameter of non-Gaussian galaxy assembly bias and of varying the parameters of the intensity mapping foreground filters. We find that the non-Gaussian galaxy assembly bias parameter causes a greater change in the constraints on local primordial non-Gaussianity than the foreground filter parameters.

Non-Gaussianity in the squeezed three-point correlation from the relativistic effects

Assuming a ΛCDM universe in a single-field inflationary scenario,we compute the three-point correlation function of the observed matterdensity fluctuation in the squeezed triangular configuration, accountingfor all the relativistic effects at the second order in perturbations.This squeezed three-point correlation function characterizes the local-typeprimordial non-Gaussianity, and it has been extensively debated in literaturewhether there exists a prominent feature in galaxy clustering on large scalesin a single-field inflationary scenarioeither from the primordial origin or the intrinsic nonlinearity in generalrelativity. First, we show that theoretical descriptions of galaxy bias areincomplete in general relativity due to ambiguities in spatial gauge choice,while those of cosmological observables are independent of spatial gaugechoice. Hence a proper relativistic description of galaxy bias is neededto reach a definitive conclusion in galaxy clustering. Second, we demonstratethat the gauge-invariant calculations of the cosmologicalobservables remain unaffected by extra coordinate transformations like CFC orlarge diffeomorphism like dilatation. Finally, we show thatthe relativistic effects associated with light propagation inobservations cancel each other, and hence there exists nonon-Gaussian contribution from the so-called projection effectsin the squeezed three-point correlation function.

Signature of primordial non-Gaussianity on the 21 cm power spectrum from dark ages

Abstract We study the signature of primordial non-Gaussianity imprinted on the power spectrum of the 21 cm line differential brightness temperature during dark ages. Employing the perturbative treatment of gravitational clustering, we quantitatively estimate the effects of the non-Gaussian and one-loop corrections on the 21 cm power spectrum. The potential impact of the use of the 21 cm power spectrum for the constraint on local-type primordial non-Gaussianity is investigated based on the Fisher matrix analysis. Our results show that the 21 cm power spectrum for an array with a baseline of several tens of kilometers can constrain the primordial non-Gaussianity to a level severer than that from cosmic microwave background measurements, and its constraining power is stronger than that of the 21 cm bispectrum, while in the ultimate situation the 21 cm bispectrum eventually becomes more powerful.

Density reconstruction from biased tracers and its application to primordial non-Gaussianity

Large-scale Fourier modes of the cosmic density field are of great value for learning about cosmology because of their well-understood relationship to fluctuations in the early universe. However, cosmic variance generally limits the statistical precision that can be achieved when constraining model parameters using these modes as measured in galaxy surveys, and moreover, these modes are sometimes inaccessible due to observational systematics or foregrounds. For some applications, both limitations can be circumvented by reconstructing large-scale modes using the correlations they induce between smaller-scale modes of an observed tracer (such as galaxy positions). In this paper, we further develop a formalism for this reconstruction, using a quadratic estimator similar to the one used for lensing of the cosmic microwave background. We incorporate nonlinearities from gravity, nonlinear biasing, and local-type primordial non-Gaussianity, and verify that the estimator gives the expected results when applied to N-body simulations. We then carry out forecasts for several upcoming surveys, demonstrating that, when reconstructed modes are included alongside directly-observed tracer density modes, constraints on local primordial non-Gaussianity are generically tightened by tens of percents compared to standard single-tracer analyses. In certain cases, these improvements arise from cosmic variance cancellation, with reconstructed modes taking the place of modes of a separate tracer, thus enabling an effective "multitracer" approach with single-tracer observations.

Primordial non-Gaussianity from the completed SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey – I: Catalogue preparation and systematic mitigation

ABSTRACT We investigate the large-scale clustering of the final spectroscopic sample of quasars from the recently completed extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). The sample contains 343 708 objects in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 2.2 and 72 667 objects with redshifts 2.2 < z < 3.5, covering an effective area of $4699\, {\rm deg}^{2}$. We develop a neural network-based approach to mitigate spurious fluctuations in the density field caused by spatial variations in the quality of the imaging data used to select targets for follow-up spectroscopy. Simulations are used with the same angular and radial distributions as the real data to estimate covariance matrices, perform error analyses, and assess residual systematic uncertainties. We measure the mean density contrast and cross-correlations of the eBOSS quasars against maps of potential sources of imaging systematics to address algorithm effectiveness, finding that the neural network-based approach outperforms standard linear regression. Stellar density is one of the most important sources of spurious fluctuations, and a new template constructed using data from the Gaia spacecraft provides the best match to the observed quasar clustering. The end-product from this work is a new value-added quasar catalogue with the improved weights to correct for non-linear imaging systematic effects, which will be made public. Our quasar catalogue is used to measure the local-type primordial non-Gaussianity in a companion paper.

Constraints on Primordial Non-Gaussianity Using the Multitracer Technique for Skew Spectra

Abstract Extracting the bispectrum information from large-scale structure observations is challenging due to the complex models and the computational costs involved in measuring the signal and its covariance. Recently, the skew spectrum was proposed to access parts of the bispectrum information in a more effective manner and was confirmed to provide complementary information to that available in power spectrum measurements. In this work, we generalize the theory to apply the multitracer technique and explore its ability to constrain the local-type primordial non-Gaussianity. Using the spectra and their covariance estimated from N-body simulations, we find that the multitracer approach is effective in reducing the cosmic variance noise. The 1σ marginalized errors for , and are reduced by 50%, 52%, and 73% compared with the results achieved using only the power spectrum obtained from a single tracer. These results indicate that both the skew spectrum and the multitracer technique are useful in constraining the primordial non-Gaussianity with the forthcoming wide-field galaxy surveys.

Clustering of primordial black holes formed in a matter-dominated epoch

In the presence of the local-type primordial non-Gaussianity, it is known that the clustering of primordial black holes (PBHs) emerges even on super-horizon scales at the formation time. This effect has been investigated in the high-peak limit of the PBH formation in the radiation-dominated epoch in the literature. There is another possibility that the PBH formation takes place in the early matter-dominated epoch. In this scenario, the high-peak limit is not applicable because even initially small perturbations grow and can become a PBH. We first derive a general formula to estimate the clustering of PBHs with primordial non-Gaussianity without assuming the high-peak limit, and then apply this formula to a model of PBH formation in a matter-dominated epoch. Clustering is less significant in the case of the PBH formation in the matter-dominated epoch than that in the radiation-dominated epoch. Nevertheless, it is much larger than the Poisson shot noise in many cases. Relations to the constraints of the isocurvature perturbations by the cosmic microwave background radiation are quantitatively discussed.

21-cm power spectrum and ionization bias as a probe of long-mode modulated non-Gaussian sky

ABSTRACT The observed hemispherical power asymmetry in cosmic microwave background radiation can be explained by long-wavelength mode (long-mode) modulation. In this paper, we study the possibility of detecting this effect in the angular power spectrum of the 21-cm brightness temperature. For this task, we study the effect of the neutral hydrogen distribution on the angular power spectrum. This is done by formulating the bias parameter of the ionized fraction to the underlying matter distribution. We also discuss the possibility that the long-mode modulation is accompanied by a primordial non-Gaussianity of local type. In this case, we obtain the angular power spectrum with two effects of primordial non-Gaussianity and long-mode modulation. Finally, we show that the primordial non-Gaussianity enhances the long-mode modulated power of the 21-cm signal via the non-Gaussian scale-dependent bias up to four orders of magnitude. Accordingly, observations of the 21-cm signal with upcoming surveys, such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), will probably be capable of detecting hemispherical power asymmetry in the context of long-mode modulation.

Cosmic variance mitigation in measurements of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) is sensitive to the recent phase of accelerated cosmic expansion through the late-time integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, which manifests as secondary temperature fluctuations on large angular scales. However, the large cosmic variance from primary CMB fluctuations limits the usefulness of this effect in constraining dark energy or modified gravity. In this paper, we propose a novel method to separate the ISW signal from the primary signal using gravitational lensing, based on the fact that the ISW signal is, to a good approximation, not gravitationally lensed. We forecast how well we can isolate the ISW signal for different experimental configurations, and discuss various applications, including modified gravity, large-scale CMB anomalies, and measurements of local-type primordial non-Gaussianity. Although not within reach of current experiments, the proposed method is a unique way to remove the cosmic variance of the primary signal, allowing for better CMB-based constraints on late-time phenomena than previously thought possible.

Persistent homology and non-Gaussianity

In this paper, we introduce the topological persistence diagram as a statistic for Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy maps. A central concept in 'Topological Data Analysis' (TDA), the idea of persistence is to represent a data set by a family of topological spaces. One then examines how long topological features 'persist' as the family of spaces is traversed. We compute persistence diagrams for simulated CMB temperature anisotropy maps featuring various levels of primordial non-Gaussianity of local type. Postponing the analysis of observational effects, we show that persistence diagrams are more sensitive to local non-Gaussianity than previous topological statistics including the genus and Betti number curves, and can constrain Δ fNLloc= 35.8 at the 68% confidence level on the simulation set, compared to Δ fNLloc= 60.6 for the Betti number curves. Given the resolution of our simulations, we expect applying persistence diagrams to observational data will give constraints competitive with those of the Minkowski Functionals. This is the first in a series of papers where we plan to apply TDA to different shapes of non-Gaussianity in the CMB and Large Scale Structure.

On Minkowski Functionals of CMB polarization

CMB polarization data is usually analyzed using E and B modes because they are scalar quantities under rotations along the lines of sight and have distinct physical origins. We explore the possibility of using the Stokes parameters Q and U for complementary analysis and consistency checks in the context of searches for non-Gaussianity. We show that the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) of Q, U are invariant under local rotations along the lines of sight even though Q, U are spin-2 variables, for full sky analysis. The invariance does not hold for incomplete sky. For local type primordial non-Gaussianity, when we compare the non-Gaussian deviations of MFs for Q, U to what is obtained for E mode or temperature fluctuations, we find that the amplitude is about an order of magnitude lower and the shapes of the deviations are different. This finding can be useful in distinguishing local type non-Gaussianity from other origins of non-Gaussianity in the observed data. Lastly, we analyze the sensitivity of the amplitudes of the MFs for Q, U and the number density of singularities of the total polarization intensity to the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, and find that all of them decrease as r increases.

Non-local bias in the halo bispectrum with primordial non-Gaussianity

Primordial non-Gaussianity can lead to a scale-dependent bias in the density of collapsed halos relative to the underlying matter density. The galaxy power spectrum already provides constraints on local-type primordial non-Gaussianity complementary those from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), while the bispectrum contains additional shape information and has the potential to outperform CMB constraints in future. We develop the bias model for the halo density contrast in the presence of local-type primordial non-Gaussianity, deriving a bivariate expansion up to second order in terms of the local linear matter density contrast and the local gravitational potential in Lagrangian coordinates. Nonlinear evolution of the matter density introduces a non-local tidal term in the halo model. Furthermore, the presence of local-type non-Gaussianity in the Lagrangian frame leads to a novel non-local convective term in the Eulerian frame, that is proportional to the displacement field when going beyond the spherical collapse approximation. We use an extended Press-Schechter approach to evaluate the halo mass function and thus the halo bispectrum. We show that including these non-local terms in the halo bispectra can lead to corrections of up to 25% for some configurations, on large scales or at high redshift.

Using large scale structure to measurefNL,gNLandτNL

Primordial non-Gaussianity of local type is known to produce a scale-dependent contribution to the galaxy bias. Several classes of multifield inflationary models predict non-Gaussian bias which is stochastic, in the sense that dark matter and halos do not trace each other perfectly on large scales. In this work, we forecast the ability of next-generation large-scale structure surveys to constrain common types of primordial non-Gaussianity like ${f}_{\mathrm{NL}}$, ${g}_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{NL}}$ using halo bias, including stochastic contributions. We provide fitting functions for statistical errors on these parameters which can be used for rapid forecasting or survey optimization. A next-generation survey with volume $V=25{h}^{\ensuremath{-}3}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{3}$, median redshift $z=0.7$ and mean bias ${b}_{g}=2.5$ can achieve $\ensuremath{\sigma}({f}_{\mathrm{NL}})=6$, $\ensuremath{\sigma}({g}_{\mathrm{NL}})={10}^{5}$ and $\ensuremath{\sigma}({\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{NL}})={10}^{3}$ if no mass information is available. If halo masses are available, we show that optimally weighting the halo field in order to reduce sample variance can achieve $\ensuremath{\sigma}({f}_{\mathrm{NL}})=1.5$, $\ensuremath{\sigma}({g}_{\mathrm{NL}})={10}^{4}$ and $\ensuremath{\sigma}({\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{NL}})=100$ if halos with mass down to ${M}_{\mathrm{min}}={10}^{11}{h}^{\ensuremath{-}1}{M}_{\ensuremath{\bigodot}}$ are resolved, outperforming Planck by a factor of 4 on ${f}_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and nearly an order of magnitude on ${g}_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{NL}}$. Finally, we study the effect of photometric redshift errors and discuss degeneracies between different non-Gaussian parameters, as well as the impact of marginalizing Gaussian bias and shot noise.

Primordial non-Gaussian signatures in CMB polarization

We study the signatures of local type primordial non-Gaussianity, parametrized by fNL, of scalar perturbations in CMB polarization using the probability distribution functions, Minkowski Functionals and Betti numbers. We show that the lowest order non-Gaussian deviation of the PDF of the total polarization intensity is at order (fNLσ)2. We calculate the non-Gaussian deviations of Minkowski Functionals and Betti numbers from simulated polarization maps. If observational issues such as instrumental noise are ignored, we find that E mode polarization provides independent and equally strong constraint on fNL as temperature fluctuations. The constraint is expected to weaken when observational issues are included since the signal-to-noise ratio of polarization data is lower than that of temperature. The non-Gaussian signal in the total polarization intensity, however, is much weaker and has a relatively large cosmic variance and hence may not be useful for detecting local type non-Gaussianity.

Impact of polarization on the intrinsic cosmic microwave background bispectrum

We compute the bispectrum induced in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarisation by the evolution of the primordial density perturbations using the second-order Boltzmann code SONG. We show that adding polarisation increases the signal-to-noise ratio by a factor four with respect to temperature alone and we estimate the observability of this intrinsic bispectrum and the bias it induces on measurements of primordial non-Gaussianity. When including all physical effects except the late-time non-linear evolution, we find for the intrinsic bispectrum a signal-to-noise of $S/N=3.8,\,2.9,\,1.6$ and $0.5$ for, respectively, an ideal experiment with an angular resolution of $\ell_\text{max}=3000$, the proposed CMB surveys PRISM and COrE, and Planck's polarised data; the bulk of this signal comes from the $E$-polarisation and from squeezed configurations. We discuss how CMB lensing is expected to reduce these estimates as it suppresses the bispectrum for squeezed configurations and contributes to the noise in the estimator. We find that the presence of the intrinsic bispectrum will bias a measurement of primordial non-Gaussianity of local type by $f_{NL}^\text{bias}=0.66$ for an ideal experiment with $\ell_\text{max}=3000$. Finally, we verify the robustness of our results by reproducing the analytical approximation for the squeezed-limit bispectrum in the general polarised case.

Cosmological information in the intrinsic alignments of luminous red galaxies

The intrinsic alignments of galaxies are usually regarded as a contaminant to weak gravitational lensing observables. The alignment of Luminous Red Galaxies, detected unambiguously in observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, can be reproduced by the linear tidal alignment model of Catelan, Kamionkowski & Blandford (2001) on large scales. In this work, we explore the cosmological information encoded in the intrinsic alignments of red galaxies. We make forecasts for the ability of current and future spectroscopic surveys to constrain local primordial non-Gaussianity and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) in the cross-correlation function of intrinsic alignments and the galaxy density field. For the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, we find that the BAO signal in the intrinsic alignments is marginally significant with a signal-to-noise ratio of 1.8 and 2.2 with the current LOWZ and CMASS samples of galaxies, respectively, and increasing to 2.3 and 2.7 once the survey is completed. For the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and for a spectroscopic survey following the EUCLID redshift selection function, we find signal-to-noise ratios of 12 and 15, respectively. Local type primordial non-Gaussianity, parametrized by fNL = 10, is only marginally significant in the intrinsic alignments signal with signal-to-noise ratios < 2 for the three surveys considered.

The interplay of CMB temperature lensing power reconstruction with primordial non-Gaussianity of local type

In the current era of high-precision CMB experiments, the imprint of gravitational lensing on the CMB temperature is exploited as a source of valuable information. Especially the reconstruction of the lensing potential power spectrum is of great interest. The reconstruction from the optimal quadratic estimator of the lensing potential, though, is biased. As long as the intrinsic CMB fluctuations are Gaussian this bias is well understood and controlled. In the presence of non-Gaussian primordial curvature perturbations, however, the CMB also acquires a non-Gaussian structure mimicking the lensing signal. Concentrating on primordial non-Gaussianity of local type, we address the resulting bias by extracting the lensing potential power spectrum from large samples of simulated lensed CMB temperature maps comprising different values of f_NL. We find that the bias is considerably larger than previous analytical calculations suggested. For current values of f_NL and a sensitivity like that of the Planck mission, however, the bias is completely negligible on all but the largest angular scales.

HOT AND COLD SPOT COUNTS AS PROBES OF NON-GAUSSIANITY IN THE COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND

We introduce the numbers of hot and cold spots, $n_h$ and $n_c$, of excursion sets of the CMB temperature anisotropy maps as statistical observables that can discriminate different non-Gaussian models. We numerically compute them from simulations of non-Gaussian CMB temperature fluctuation maps. The first kind of non-Gaussian model we study is the local type primordial non-Gaussianity. The second kind of models have some specific form of the probability distribution function from which the temperature fluctuation value at each pixel is drawn, obtained using HEALPIX. We find the characteristic non-Gaussian deviation shapes of $n_h$ and $n_c$, which is distinct for each of the models under consideration. We further demonstrate that $n_h$ and $n_c$ carry additional information compared to the genus, which is just their linear combination, making them valuable additions to the Minkowski Functionals in constraining non-Gaussianity.

Application of cross correlations between CMB and large-scale structure to constraints on the primordial non-Gaussianity

The primordial non-Gaussianity of local type affects the clustering of dark matter halos, and the planned deep and wide photometric surveys are suitable for examining this class of non-Gaussianity. In our previous paper, we investigated the constraint from the cross correlation between CMB lensing potential and galaxy angular distribution on the primordial non-Gaussianity, without taking into account redshift slicing. To improve our previous analysis, in this paper, we add the galaxy lensing shear into our analysis and take into account redshift slicing to follow the redshift evolution of the clustering. By calculating 81 power spectra and using the Fisher matrix method, we find that the constraint on the primordial non-Gaussianity can be improved from {\Delta}fNL \sim 5.4 to 5.1 by including the galaxy-galaxy lensing shear cross correlations expected from the Hyper Suprime-Cam survey (HSC), in comparison with the constraint without any cross correlations. Moreover, the constraint can go down to {\Delta}fNL \sim 4.8 by including the galaxy-CMB lensing cross correlations from the ACTPol and Planck experiments.
