O.272 Local hyperthermia in treatment of tumors of head and neck

The catalytic performance of Ni/TiO2 and Ni–Ir/TiO2 catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) has been investigated. The Ni–Ir/TiO2 presented higher activity than the Ni/TiO2. Here, we studied and gave some insights into the interaction between Ni and Ir species and the role of Ir using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2 TPR), hydrogen temperature-programmed desorption (H2 TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The size of Ni particles on the Ni–Ir/TiO2 was 10.1 nm, smaller than that (12.7 nm) on the Ni/TiO2. The reducibility of Ni was improved by addition of a small amount of Ir, as confirmed with the H2 TPR analysis. The Ni–Ir/TiO2 could be reduced at a temperature of 352 °C, which is lower than the temperature for Ni/TiO2 (385 °C); moreover, a new reduction peak appeared at 240 °C due to the stronger interaction of Ni–Ir species, which was certified by XPS analysis. The H2 TPD results indicate that the hydrogen spillover effect may occur in Ni–Ir/TiO2. The electronic structure of the surface Ni atoms was modified upon addition of Ir, resulting in an enhanced activity of the Ni–Ir/TiO2 catalyst, about four times as high as that of the Ni/TiO2 catalyst.

Trans-catheter hepatic arterial injection of lipiodol soluble anti-cancer agent SMANCS and ADR suspension in lipiodol combined with arterial embolization and local hyperthermia for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma

The clinical effect and safety of Lp-TAE alone and combined with radiofrequency (RF) capacitive hyperthermia (HT) were evaluated in 20 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with cirrhosis of the liver. After the oily carcinostatic agents were administered by Lp-TAE, HT, at a temperature of greater than 42.5 degrees C, was induced for 40 min, twice a week by an RF of 8 MHz for a total of 10 to 38 times. The response rate was 40% in the 10 cases that were treated with Lp-TAE combined with HT and 20% in the 10 cases that were treated with Lp-TAE. The patients who were treated with Lp-TAE combined with HT had a tendency to have better survival rates than those of the Lp-TAE group (p less than 0.099). The main side-effects of Lp-TAE combined with HT were low-grade fever, localized pain, myelo-suppression and liver dysfunction, but these were transient and eventually disappeared.

Local hyperthermia in treatment of experimental liver tumors.

An experimental model for local microwave hyperthermia treatment of liver tumors is presented. Fifty-four Wistar rats were inoculated with a transplantable adenocarcinoma (NGW) in the central liver lobe. Ten to 16 days later 28 of the rats were exposed to local hyperthermia. A master thermistor placed in the liver parenchyma adjacent to the tumor controlled the hyperthermia, and the tumor-bearing liver lobe was maintained at 42.0 degrees C for 1 hour. At laparotomy 7 days after treatment, the tumor volume was measured. Four weeks after tumor inoculation, autopsy was performed. The tumor and the surrounding parenchyma was excised for histopathologic examination. A statistically significant reduction in tumor growth was found after exposure to local hyperthermia, the effect of hyperthermia being most pronounced in moderate-sized tumors (300-500 mm3 or 0.5-0.75 g). In larger tumors (greater than 900 mm3 or greater than 1.1 g) extensive necrosis developed after hyperthermia treatment. This indicates good tumoricidal effect even in large tumors, although this is not obvious if reduction in tumor growth is used as the only parameter to evaluate the effect of hyperthermia.
