The Upper Secondary School Act as legal violence in the Swedish welfare state: ‘I came to Sweden just so I could live’

In this article we investigate the harmful effects of the 2018 Upper Secondary School Act (the ‘Study Law’) upon young people in Sweden who have sought to regularise their stay with the help of this law. We analyse these harmful impacts as ‘legal violence’: structural and symbolic violence embedded in or intensified by law (Menjívar and Abrego, 2012), in the context of Swedish welfare regulation. The Study Law was ostensibly enacted to provide a new opportunity for some 7,000 young people, the majority of whom had fled Afghanistan. These young people had sought asylum in Sweden in 2015, but had not had their needs for protection recognised, instead being subjected to exclusionary laws, policies and growing racism. The Study Law substituted the possibility of protection with strict requirements of study, work and conduct, while the social and material support needed to fulfil these requirements largely was withheld. In our analysis, we draw upon interviews with young people collected as part of a doctoral research project, legal materials, and our own, earlier joint experiences as legal practitioners working with those affected by this law. The legal violence of the Study Law, we argue, has produced individual and social harms, particularly impacting the lives of young people seeking asylum. The law has created a complex and hard-to-navigate, legally-violent regime that, directly and indirectly, has exacerbated hardships and facilitated suffering and even death.

Health Experiences of LGBTQ+ People Living With Dementia and Their Care Partners: A Scoping Review of Research and Policy

Objectives This scoping review aimed to synthesize research on the health experiences of LGBTQ+ people living with dementia (PLWD) and their caregivers, and the impact of health policies on this population. Methods Six databases were searched for research studies and policy literature. Titles, abstracts, and full texts were reviewed by a three-member team. Data was extracted and thematically analyzed. Feedback from 7 LGBTQ+ adults was collected through a community consultation session. Results A total of 9257 unique research and 945 policy citations were identified, of which 60 research and 19 policy papers were reviewed. Nine research studies and ten policy papers met eligibility criteria. Themes emerged through the analysis of research findings, the community listening session, and policy findings. Discussion Future work needs to disentangle the impact of policies on the health experiences of this population. Dementia-specific and LGBTQ+ inclusive services and policies are needed to address growing health disparities.

Modern Technology: A Potential Tool to Impart English Language Skills

Technology has brought a revolution in the life of people and completely changed their interaction and work dynamics. Industries were also greatly influenced and couldn’t escape the technical revolution. As a result, technology plays a vital role in teaching and learning. Using technology to teach English has a lot of advantages. Learners can get benefit from traditional educational institutions and also from online education. At the English lessons online we can unite to do the desired task. Different software programs, applications are available in learning Vocabulary, Pronunciation skills, Grammar, and LSRW skills. Many students in developed countries are making use of technology to learn the English language. But many more in underdeveloped countries fail to use tech tools for learning purposes due to inadequate tech facilities.

THE ROLE OF MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION IN THE PATHOGENESIS AND TREATMENT OF INFLAMMATORY DISEASES IN THE ORAL CAVITY

Inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity (IOD) include many common diseases such as periodontitis and pulpitis. The main causes of IOD are microorganisms, trauma, occlusive factors, autoimmune diseases and radiation therapy. If not treated correctly, such diseases can not only affect oral health, but also pose a threat to people's overall health. Therefore, identifying IOD at an early stage and exploring new therapeutic strategies are important research goals related to oral therapy. Mitochondria are essential organelles for many cellular processes. Mitochondrial dysfunction not only affects cellular metabolism, but also indirectly affects people's health and life expectancy. Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in many common polygenic diseases, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, increasing evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in the development and progression of IOD and associated systemic diseases. This review outlines critical insights into mitochondrial dysfunction and its role in inflammatory responses in IOD. The results of recent studies in the field of treatment of IOD, aimed at mitochondrial dysfunction, are presented, and the underlying mechanisms are also considered.

Nasi tutug oncom is a traditional Sundanese dish, which is not only a food but also reflects the rich culture and life of the Sundanese people. The purpose of this study examines the uniqueness of nasi tutug oncom and how this dish acts as a tool to express the values, identity, and social dynamics of Sundanese society that continues to evolve in the midst of globalization. The method used is descriptive qualitative method with data acquisition through literature study, interviews with culinary experts and the community, and analysis of how tutug oncom rice is presented in various media, this research tries to reveal the deep meaning behind tutug oncom rice. The research sample is tutug oncom rice. The results show that nasi tutug oncom is more than just food; it symbolizes the hospitality, local wisdom and food security of the Sundanese people. The process of making it, serving it, and eating it, is full of meanings that reflect the values of mutual cooperation, simplicity, and respect for nature. In this era of globalization, nasi tutug oncom faces both challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, this dish can become an Indonesian culinary icon that can be recognized worldwide. However, on the other hand, nasi tutug oncom is vulnerable to changes that can eliminate its uniqueness and original characteristics. This research suggests the importance of preserving and developing nasi tutug oncom without sacrificing its cultural and philosophical significance. Overall, this research shows that food is not just a daily necessity. Through nasi tutug oncom, we can see that food has deep social and cultural aspects, which are important for preserving local cultural diversity.

The Concept of “World” in Ancient Turkic World View

Abstract The relevance of this work is that modern society shows interest in and explores the issue of traditional values, which are the result of social transformations. The development of a national, traditional worldview in the study and cognition of the surrounding world is still being investigated today. The purpose of the study is to conduct a general analysis of the establishment and origin of the worldview of the ancient Turkic peoples and to show the essential aspects of the classical worldview of modern Turkic peoples. The following methods were used in this study: historical, dialectical, comparative, historical, and descriptive methods, analysis and synthesis, as well as deductive and inductive methods. The result of the study was the coverage of not only the question of the worldview of the ancient Turks but also the relevance of this topic in the modern world and the role of a person in society. The study reveals the attitude of the Turks toward society, beliefs, worldview, and understanding of the “World” by nomadic Turkic peoples and describes the main function of the world. The practical significance of this topic lies in the motivation of a person to learn about their origin, culture, and traditions. The study of the world, life, and death of the Turkic peoples will provide a deeper understanding of the traditional culture and worldview of the ancient Turks. The paper covers the topic of the origin of culture and civilization among the Turks. The heroic epic “Oguz Kagan” is considered, and the manifestation of divine faith in the work is analyzed. The idea of the “World” in the epic was clarified by the beliefs of the ancient Turks.

The Development of Yunnan “New Folk Songs”

Background and Aim: This study investigates the evolution of the “New Folk Song” in Yunnan and analyzes how historical, cultural, and social changes have influenced their development. Yunnan folk songs are a cultural product with local characteristics and close to the development of the working people in Yunnan that is close to the people's daily life. The "New Folk Songs" of Yunnan is a musical form combining “nation” and “modern” innovation. In the process of development, it is constantly endowed with new definitions and connotations and presents the situation of diversified development. Due to the special historical and social environment of Yunnan, a large number of “New Folk Songs” with rich themes and excellent quality have emerged in Yunnan during the period of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the Revolutionary War, the “Cultural Revolution”, and the era of peace and development in recent years. The results show that Yunnan's “New Folk Songs” evolved through the integration of modern and traditional elements, reflecting the unique social and cultural dynamics of Yunnan over the past hundred years. To study the development of “New Folk Songs” in Yunnan, this study is not only a record of musical life in different periods, but also the development trajectory of different musical works in Yunnan across the century, but also a study of the development history of music creation in Yunnan. Materials and Methods: This Article aimed to study related literature to find out the development of Yunnan's “New Folk Songs”. The instrument for collecting data was documentary research. Relevant journals, academic papers, books, magazines, and online information related to the development of Yunnan's “New Folk Songs” are reviewed and organized. From the perspective of creation and music ontology, the style characteristics and creation characteristics of Yunnan "new folk songs" in different periods are analyzed, to explore the development of Yunnan “New Folk Songs” in Yunnan. Results: Throughout the development of “New Folk Songs” in Yunnan, its creation characteristics are contemporary, national, and regional; music works have the style characteristics of Yunnan minority elements. This paper will analyze and study the above characteristics in depth. Brief Analysis of the Interaction and Development between Modern Media and Traditional Culture

With the rapid development of modern media technology, the application fields of modern media are increasingly extensive, playing an important role in people's daily work and life. Chinese culture, with its long and profound history, is facing challenges from various emerging cultures. Increasingly, foreign cultures, leveraging rapidly developing media technologies, have influenced our traditional culture. Family quality of life of Ghanaian families raising people with intellectual disability

This study examined the family quality of life (FQOL) of people with intellectual disabilities (PWID). Participants were 176 Ghanaian parents of PWID (mothers = 71.6%). The mean age of the parents was 41.64 years (SD = 9.21 years). The parents completed the Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale. Descriptive analysis revealed that while the parents of PWID were satisfied with overall FQOL, they were least satisfied with FQOL subdomains including disability-related support, physical/material well-being, and emotional well-being. There was evidence of variabilities within FQOL among families raising PWID. Female parents of PWID reported a higher overall FQOL than male parents. Parents who had male children with intellectual disability reported a higher overall FQOL, compared to those who had female children with intellectual disability. Our findings highlight the need for FQOL support for families of PWID and a need to develop interventions to improve different aspects of FQOL for higher family life satisfaction.

The Social Awareness Index as a Tool to Determine the Role of a Companion Robot in the Lives of People with Reduced Mobility

Robots are becoming an increasingly popular element of the developing technological reality. A companion (social) robot can be defined as an autonomous machine that recognises other robots and people and engages in social interactions. Robots of this type are designed to serve people, so they often act as guides, assistants, companions, guardians, teachers and domestic pets. This study aims to define and operationalise the components and synthetically measure the social awareness (index) concerning the usability of a companion robot in everyday life. A comprehensive new research tool was developed as part of the study in the form of an original standardised interview questionnaire by the CATI/CAWI technique. Empirical studies show that an increase in social acceptance requires that potential consumers be provided with the necessary information to know the technologies better and improve their digital skills related to social robots.

Effects of switching from MiniMed™ 640G to 770G on continuous glucose monitoring metrics and DTR‐QOL scores: An observational study of Japanese people with type 1 diabetes mellitus

ABSTRACTAims/IntroductionWe evaluated the effect of the MiniMed™ 770G, an insulin pump using hybrid closed‐loop technology, on blood glucose management and quality of life in Japanese people with type 1 diabetes.Materials and MethodsThis was a 52‐week, prospective, observational study. Fifty Japanese people with type 1 diabetes switched from the MiniMed™ 640G to 770G, and we analyzed the continuous glucose monitoring data of 24 subjects who used auto mode throughout the study. We also analyzed the scores of the Diabetes Therapy‐Related Quality of Life questionnaire completed by 26 auto‐mode users before and after the treatment change.ResultsThe baseline time in range 70–180 mg/dL was 67.3 (54.8–78.4)%, with a significant improvement beginning 8 weeks after the switch and lasting until 52 weeks. The baseline time below range <70 mg/dL was 1.9 (0.6–3.6)%, with a significant increase at week 8; however, the mean value was less than 4% throughout the study period. On the other hand, the number of blood glucose measurements significantly increased. While there was no significant difference in the overall change in the total Diabetes Therapy‐Related Quality of Life score, there was a significant decrease in the treatment satisfaction score.ConclusionsUse of the MiniMed™ 770G improved continuous glucose monitoring metrics. However, treatment satisfaction decreased, probably due to the increased frequency of blood glucose monitoring necessary to maintain auto mode.

Analysis of the nursing effect of five-tone therapy combined with acupoint massage on chemotherapy of lung cancer

BACKGROUND: The use of complementary therapies to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy in lung cancer patients is becoming increasingly popular. Practices from traditional Chinese medicine, such as acupoint massage and five-tone therapy, have demonstrated potential in alleviating symptoms such as nausea and vomiting experienced during chemotherapy. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of combining five-tone therapy with acupoint massage in reducing chemotherapy-related symptoms in lung cancer patients. The main objective is to determine how these complementary therapies affect the quality of life and well-being of people undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer. METHODS: In this paper, 80 patients diagnosed with lung cancer who needed chemotherapy drugs were randomly divided into 2 groups, 40 patients. The first was treatment; the second was control. Chemotherapy drugs were combined with a 5-hydroxytryptamine blocker (granisetron), and acupoint massage was combined with pentatone therapy to prevent nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal reactions. The total effective rate was 92.50%; among 40 cases in control, 6 cases were clinically controlled, 16 cases were markedly effective, 12 cases were practical, and 6 cases were invalid. The total effective rate was 85.00%. CONCLUSION: By integrating traditional Chinese medicine techniques, healthcare professionals can augment the supportive care offered to those undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer.

<b>Contrastive Analysis of Similes with Dog Image in English and Vietnamese and Implications</b>

Studies on dog images in idiomatic languages ​​in different languages ​​always receive a lot of attention from researchers. The present study examines the similarities of 21 English-Vietnamese dog similes and tries to account for the differences based on Hofstede’s model (2001). The analysis results show that the image of the dog in each language has unique cultural characteristics due to the influence of factors such as geographical circumstances and customs. While the image of a dog appearing in English similes has both positive meaning (38%) and negative meaning (62%), Vietnamese similes record a full dominance in negative meanings (100%). Besides, the semantic symbols of similes with dog elements in Vietnamese and English have interesting similarities. Understanding the semantic characteristics of words for dogs in English and Vietnamese similes contributes to discovering new things about the life, customs, practices, culture, and thinking of British and Vietnamese people.

Crop-raiding by wildlife and cropland abandonment as feedback from nature-based solutions: lessons from case studies in China and Nepal

Abstract Conservation efforts under the nature-based solutions (NbS) framework aim at better management of ecosystems and improvement of human well-being. Policies targeting forest-based livelihoods align well with the NbS principles, but their social-ecological outcomes are often confounded by complex human-environment interactions. In this study, we identify one major feedback effect of the ecosystem dynamic on people’s livelihoods based on datasets collected from two study areas in China and Nepal. Our methodology integrates satellite remote sensing, household surveys, and statistical models to investigate households’ cropland abandonment decisions under the influence of crop-raiding by wildlife. Results show that cropland parcels that have experienced crop-raiding are more likely to be abandoned in the following years. The more damage the crops have suffered on a given parcel, the more likely it is that the parcel will be abandoned. Parcels in proximity to natural forests, farther away from the house location, and with poorer access to paved roads bear a higher risk of being abandoned. These effects are robust and consistent after controlling for multiple parcel features and household characteristics at different levels and using the dataset from each study area separately. We conclude that policymakers need to consider this undesirable feedback of the ecological system to the livelihoods of local people to better achieve co-benefits for ecosystems and human society.

Effect of Mental Health Care Visits on HIV Care Outcomes

AbstractTo improve the quality of life for people living with HIV (PLWH), it is vital their treatment plans closely follow the HIV care continuum. However, many barriers, such as mental health disorders (MHD), can complicate treatment. Patients being treated for HIV with comorbid MHD are more likely to not be retained in care and maintain an unsuppressed viral load. As PLWH and people vulnerable to acquiring HIV are more commonly diagnosed with MHD in comparison to the general population, it is important that steps to mitigate the possible effects of MHD are addressed during treatment. This study examines how minimal mental health care in a safety-net hospital system in the U.S. South can show benefits in retaining patients throughout their treatment of HIV. The results showed that older individuals retained a higher level of viral suppression when they followed up regularly with a mental health care provider during treatment. In addition, regardless of age, the higher the number of mental health care visits a patient attended during treatment, the higher the likelihood of viral suppression. By incorporating mental health care into the HIV treatment plan, the patients who met at least one of these criteria had better treatment outcomes and progressed further along the HIV care continuum.

The Role of Spiritual Well-Being in Spanish Cancer Patients: Exploring the Relationship Between Health, Religiosity and Spirituality, and the Underlying Psychosocial and Behavioral Pathways

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the interactions of spiritual well-being with different psychosocial and behavioral aspects that have been proposed in the literature as pathways underlying the relationship of religiosity and spirituality (R/S) with physical health, specifically in cancer patients (N = 351). Using a cross-sectional research design, a series of hierarchical regression analyses show the predictive power of different elements of R/S (attachment to God, religious practice, commitment and coping, and spiritual experiences) on spiritual well-being. In turn, spiritual well-being (meaning/peace and faith) predicts gratitude and compassion (as psychological pathways). Thus, finally, spiritual well-being, together with gratitude and compassion, correlates to the rest of the psychological (positive and negative emotions), social (social support) and behavioral (healthy behaviors) pathways to different extents. Spiritual well-being may play an important role in understanding the relationships between R/S and health, so considering it along with its associated factors may be key to improving the health and quality of life of people affected by cancer in Spain.

Intermediation: Algorithmic Prioritization in Practice in Homeless Services

Homelessness is a significant and growing crisis in the United States. In an effort to more efficiently and fairly distribute limited housing resources, jurisdictions across the US have adopted algorithmic prioritization systems to help select which unhoused people should receive resources. Given the impact of algorithmic prioritization on the lives of unhoused people, there is a need to more fully examine how these systems are implemented in practice by frontline workers such as social service workers. In this paper, we present a qualitative study that draws on interviews and artifact walkthroughs with fifteen social service workers to examine how they interacted with algorithmic prioritization systems as part of their job duties. We found that social service workers employed discretionary work practices to mediate between the rigid formats of algorithmic prioritization systems and the messy, situated realities of homelessness. We term these discretionary work practices 'intermediation' and provide four examples that illustrate how our interlocutors were able to maintain their commitment to advocacy and to express their expertise despite the automation of major aspects of their professional decision-making. These work practices, which we argue were motivated by care for clients, as well as a desire to preserve professional autonomy, lead us to conclude that discretion cannot easily be removed from bureaucratic systems and that removing discretion is not necessarily a desirable outcome.
