Link between individual resilience and aggressiveness in dental students and the mediating effect of spirituality: A path analysis

BACKGROUND: The role of spirituality in people’s lives, particularly the lives of health professionals, as well as its impact on mental health issues like anger and aggressiveness and resilience, are particularly significant. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the link between the propensity for violence and personal resilience in dental students by taking into account the function of spirituality as a mediator. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional questionnaire survey, 211 volunteer dentistry students participated from a government institute in Jammu and Kashmir, India using a stratified sample procedure. The Spiritual Orientation Scale, Buss and Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale were used to gather the data. SPSS version 20.0 was used for conducting a bivariate analysis to ascertain the directionality connection between the research variables. In addition; structural equation modelling analysis was conducted by Smart PLS. RESULTS: According to the findings, resilience and spirituality have a substantial and positive link (r = 0.468 r = 0.023). Aggressiveness and resilience revealed a statistically significant inverse link (r = 0.325, P = 0.04), but aggression and spirituality had no significant correlation. Spirituality played a substantial mediation influence in the indirect pathway of violence on resilience (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: According to the study’s findings, spirituality can help pupils become more resilient as individuals and can act as a helpful intermediary between aggressiveness and resilience.

Contribution: The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the lives of millions of people, but it has most affected the lives of healthcare workers and their families. In our communication, we draw attention to some factors that affected nurses in their care of Covid-positive patients. Objective: The aim of the thesis was to describe the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the work of nurses; especially on their health and how the pandemic affected the personal lives of nurses and their families. Methodology: The set was making up of general nurses who worked in the hospital‘s Covid wards. Quantitative method, questionnaire technique was using. Results, discussion: We found that nurses are worry about their health, but consider it part of their profession. Most of the participants do not feel any changes in their health, only some report headaches, sleep problems, exhaustion and fatigue. Nurses are afraid of transmitting the infection to their loved ones, and the nurses‘ families are concerned about their health. Conclusion: The Covid-19 pandemic affected the personal life of the nurses, mainly due to the fear of transmitting the infection to their family and neglecting domestic activities due to overtime and fatigue. The work of nurses deserves recognition, not only in times of crisis. However, the impact of the pandemic on the lives of health professionals will only become apparent with time.

Mental health in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic: a panoramic view of health professionals, affected patients and interpersonal relationships

The pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus provided a new global dynamic, reflecting on the lives of health professionals, people affected by the disease and interpersonal relationships. The main strategy adopted to curb contagion was social distance, with implications in several spheres: in family organization, in the closing of schools and public places and in work routines. This situation gave rise to feelings of helplessness, loneliness and disorders such as anxiety and depression, which directly or indirectly influence the morbidity and mortality of the disease. Health professionals are faced with a new routine, which requires countless hours of work in an exhaustive manner, concern with their patients and the unknown disease, in addition to the vulnerability of their family members. The general population is faced with difficulties in sustaining themselves, in treating chronic conditions and in the constant presence of fear and mourning. In this context, the need for investment and implementation of public policies aimed at mental health is concluded.

Cotidiano de profissionais da saúde nos cuidados paliativos: um estudo na fenomenologia social de Alfred Schültz

Objetivo: Investigar a compreensão e significados atribuídos às experiências que ocorrem no cotidiano de profissionais da saúde em uma Associação de Apoio a pessoas com câncer em cuidados paliativos. Métodos: Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa, com abordagem da Fenomenologia Social de Alfred Schütz, que propõe analisar as realidades construídas pelas pessoas e para si próprias, a partir de suas experiências intersubjetivas. Participaram quatro profissionais da saúde que desenvolvem ações de cuidados paliativos no cenário deste estudo. A investigação se deu, inicialmente, pela realização de duas reuniões de aproximação das pesquisadoras com o campo de estudo, ocorridas no período de julho a outubro de 2018. O instrumento utilizado para a coleta das informações foi a entrevista fenomenológica. Resultados: A partir das ideias nucleares, cinco categorias de análise foram definidas: trajetória dos profissionais em cuidados paliativos; cuidados paliativos: significados e motivações; experiências e desafios vividos pela equipe; construção de um cuidado singular e o lidar com a finitude da vida. Conclusão: A partir da compreensão do processo que permeia o trabalho em cuidados paliativos emergiram nos discursos subjetivos dos cuidadores a pessoa com câncer a ‘relação com o outro’ e revelaram desafios diários de convivência; conflitos; reflexões pessoais e de atitude diante do enfrentamento do câncer. As ações sinalizam para a integralidade e a resolubilidade dos cuidados, que requerem um olhar especial para o ser humano.

Breastfeeding has demonstrable benefits for children and their mothers; however, breastfeeding can be particularly difficult for women who return to the workplace in the months after a child's birth. The challenge of continuing to provide breast milk to an infant after a mother returns to work is evident in the day-to-day lives of health professionals who choose to do so and is reflected in the literature, which shows a marked reduction in breastfeeding rates corresponding to a woman's return to work. These barriers are even more apparent when travel is required for professional obligations or advancement, such as to attend or present at national conferences or to take standardized examinations at test centers. This article provides guidelines and practical advice for event organizers and testing centers to support a lactating mother's ability to provide for her child without compromising her professional career. In particular, we describe the physical requirements of lactation spaces, considerations for milk storage, ways to create a lactation-friendly environment, and unique considerations and accommodations for test takers and test centers. Supporting lactating health professionals should be seen as part of a larger endeavor to support gender equity, advance women in medicine, and integrate wellness and family into our professional lives.

Relationships between the characteristics of oncohematology services providing palliative care and the sociodemographic characteristics of caregivers using health indicators: social support, perceived stress, coping strategies, and quality of work life

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships between the characteristics of the management of oncohematology services and the psychosocial determinants of caregivers' health at work including social support, stress, and coping strategies. Investigation using questionnaires was carried out about nurses and nurse aides in hematology and oncology services. All hematology and oncology services of Western France were requested. Five questionnaires concerning sociodemographic characteristics, measurements of quality of work life, of social support, of perceived stress, and of coping strategies and quality of work life were delivered among health professionals. Five hundred seventy-four questionnaires from 53 different services were analyzed. There were 57.4% nurses and 42.6% nurse aides. Some 94.1% were female and 33.5% were older than 40 years. Several characteristics of oncohematology services were significantly linked to health indicators, as the need for time and recognition, the importance of training (in palliative care, pain management, and help relationship), the care of patients and their families, the interdisciplinary efficiency, and external interventions (psychologists and volunteers). We showed that participative management which includes implementation of service projects and of multidisciplinary staff influence the quality of work life of health professionals. We showed also how much the characteristics of services organized around an effective social support (need for recognition) favor a better quality of work life among caregivers, influencing their perceived stress and their coping strategies. To our knowledge, it is the first study showing a relationship between participative management (including multidisciplinary staffs, approach with a service project, and internal training) and the quality of work life in the domain of health care. The implementation of this model should be promoted in health care services.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a rapidly growing aspect of how patients respond to having cancer. CAM is not solely a set of clinical interventions, it is a broad social movement that seeks to recast the meaning of health and illness. Professionals in psychosocial oncology need such a perspective to truly understand why patients are turning toward CAM. CAM's appeal emerges from its five core beliefs: holism, vitalism, spirituality, a positive definition of health, and a distinctive view of the healing process. These five beliefs are well matched to how many people with cancer experience their bodies and illness, and they also form a coherent response to the difficulties many patients have when dealing with conventional medicine. Increasingly, some elements in conventional medicine are accepting of CAM. Hospital chains, managed care organizations, drug companies, and retailers of health care products are less likely to make sharp distinctions between CAM and conventional care. CAM is likely to continue growing as a factor in the professional lives of health professionals who deal with cancer.
