Explaining the non-adoption of blockchain technology in global value chains: a micro-foundational perspective

AbstractThe business potential of blockchain technology in global value chains (GVCs) includes the creation of permanent records of information, to facilitate specifications regulation, to mitigate risk using smart contracts and through full, transparent transaction traceability at reduced costs. Blockchain as a general-purpose technology (GPT) thus has the potential to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of value creation for firm specific advantages owned and/or controlled by multinational enterprises (MNE), yet adoption of blockchain is uneven. This study adopts a micro-foundational lens to explain the non-adoption of blockchain technology in multinational enterprises’ (MNE) global value chains (GVC), emphasizing the influence of the technology, organization and environment (TOE) influences on the technology acceptance (TAM) for blockchain, due to the impact on managers’ perception of blockchain's usefulness and ease of use. The empirical results are based on a multiple-case study research design, that collected interview data from supply chain managers in small, medium, and large-sized manufacturing MNEs that participate in global value chains that differ in their governance patterns. The results identified fifteen different drivers of the non-adoption of blockchain technology across the technological, organizational and external environments of the MNE. The results of the study allow a parsimonious model of blockchain technology non-adoption that is aligned with the digital technology adoption literature using a TOE–TAM approach.

Machine learning (ML) modelling techniques for mobile technology-integrated vocabulary learning on Chinese universities EFL students’ adoption

<p class="Abstract">Studying new vocabulary is an important goal for language students, as is making the learning of vocabulary a student-centered process. Of course, the goal of investigating what variables affect people’s willingness to embrace new technologies is to better adopt such technologies. The present study will thus look at the elements that have an impact on Chinese EFL college students’ adoption and usage of mobile technology-integrated vocabulary acquisition as a means to promote more learner-centric education. To better forecast human behavior, we successfully included the following elements from the technology adoption literature into the model: attitude toward change brought on by technology usage; attitude toward technology; desire; financial ramifications; aims; past behavior; perceived consistency; positive expected feelings; visibility; and so on. Furthermore, the characteristics, all of which are external factors that describe the traits of optimal technology design, are included in the development of <a href="https://open.ncl.ac.uk/theories/2/unified-theory-of-acceptance-and-use-of-technology/" target="https://www.google.com.hk/_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology</span> (</a>UTAUT) using a machine-learning. All these elements help UTAUT progress. Among its many uses, ML-based modeling may be put to good use in enhancing pre-existing explanatory statistical models (UTAUT) by identifying and analyzing hidden patterns and correlations between their many aspects. This is possible because ML-based modeling may enhance traditional statistical explanations (UTAUT).</p>

The Impact of Industrial Internet and the Digital Economy on the Management and Development of Manufacturing Information Systems Triggering Digitization as IoT and Artificial Intelligence

Technology adoption is crucial to organizational performance in the fast-changing digital world. Due to their potential to boost efficiency, productivity, and competitiveness, disruptive technologies including data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and information system integration have received attention. This study examined how IoT adoption, data analytics, and information system integration affect organizational efficiency, productivity, and competitive advantage. The study also examined how cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, and organizational culture mediate the technology-adoption-performance relationship. Quantitative research was conducted using Amos. A diverse sampling of enterprises provided data. Structural equation modelling (SEM) examined direct and indirect impacts by analyzing variable connections. IoT usage, data analytics, and information system integration improved organizational efficiency, productivity, and competitive edge. The study also showed that cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure mediate technology adoption and organizational results. Organizational culture moderated the effect of technology adoption on performance. This study added to the technology adoption literature by examining how IoT adoption, data analytics capabilities, and information system integration affect organizational efficiency, productivity, and competitive advantage. Cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure as mediators and organizational culture as a moderator helped us understand technology adoption and performance results.

The role of perceived risk and information security on customers' acceptance of service robots in the hotel industry

This study proposed and tested a theoretical framework that investigated the influences of perceived risk and information security on hotel customers’ intention to use service robots. In addition, the impacts of self-efficacy, innovativeness, and facilitating conditions on perceived risk and information security were examined. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to test the proposed model by utilizing data collected from eleven countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Turkey, Spain, Romania, Japan, Israel, India, Greece, Canada, and Brazil. The study results demonstrated that perceived risk had a negative impact on customers’ intention to use service robots while information security had a positive impact. In addition, the study results indicated that self-efficacy negatively influenced perceived risk, and positively influenced perceived information security; and innovativeness and facilitating condition positively influenced information security. The study findings offer several important contributions to the hospitality robotics technology adoption literature and present valuable implications for hospitality practitioners and service robot vendors.

Gender-disaggregated analysis of sustainable intensification practices adoption: A case of northern Ghana

Agricultural productivity has remained low in Africa, especially among smallholder farmers. Women often suffer resource constraints and access to certain technologies needed to increase productivity relative to men. This study analyzes the effect of gender on the adoption of selected sustainable intensification practices (SIPs) in northern Ghana using a sample of 463 farmers involved in maize and cowpea production. Probit regression analysis revealed that age, membership of a farmer-based organisation (FBO), and perception of ease of adoption (PEC) would likely influence the decision of females to adopt SIPs. FBO membership and ease of adopting technologies affect both male and female farmers to adopt SIPs positively. SIPs adoption decisions by males are influenced by many factors relative to those of females, thus highlighting the complexities involved in agricultural technology adoption. These findings have implications for policymakers and development practitioners working to bridge the gender gap in agricultural productivity, particularly in developing countries. The article makes an empirical contribution to the innovation and technology adoption literature, especially in terms of the factors that drive gender-transformative processes. Strengthening FBOs and utilizing the concept of technology parks to deepen farmers’ perceptions and understanding of SIPs could help bridge the gender gap in technology adoption and improve productivity.

Cryptocurrency Adoption among Saudi Arabian Public University Students: Dual Structural Equation Modelling and Artificial Neural Network Approach

Cryptocurrency is receiving widespread acceptance in the international market. Unfortunately, little attention is focused on the full identification of the cryptocurrency adoption factors, especially when it comes to emerging nations like Saudi Arabia. The current investigation is aimed at investigating whether the use of dual structural equation modelling and artificial neural network (SEM-ANN) would permit a better comprehension of the determinants of cryptocurrency adoption than the single-step PLS-SEM technique and explore the predictors of cryptocurrency adoption. An extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model was used. A sample of 344 responses from Saudi Arabian students at public universities was used to verify the model. Unlike the majority of existing studies that were based on a single-step PLS-SEM approach, this investigation employed a superior statistical approach, the dual SEM-ANN approach, considered a unique methodological approach that can recognise variables’ connections that are both linear and nonlinear and predict relationships with higher accuracy. Moreover, the dual SEM-ANN analysis revealed security as the most important factor influencing whether users would accept cryptocurrency, followed by effort expectancy and awareness. The application of the dual SEM-ANN technique and the extension of the UTAUT model with security and awareness constructs have enhanced the existing technology adoption literature. Additionally, methodological, theoretical, and practical contributions were offered by this study.

Technology readiness of farmers in sarawak: The effect of gender, age, and educational level

This research examined the association between technology readiness of farmers and their behavioral intention to adopt a mobile agricultural finance app called the e-AgriFinance app, as well as if gender, age, and educational level affect their technology readiness and behavioral intention. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect primary data from 334 farmers cultivating oil palm, rubber, cocoa, and pepper in Sarawak. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis and independent t-tests. The study revealed that the motivator dimension of technology readiness relates positively with behavioral intention while the inhibitor dimension relates negatively with behavioral intention. Female farmers were found to have higher mean scores in the motivator dimension and behavioral intention than male farmers. Farmers who are older and received lower education were found to have lower mean scores in the motivator dimension than those younger and have higher education. The findings provided alternative explanation of the role of demographic variables – gender, age, and educational level in the technology adoption literature in the context of farmers. For practice, the findings provided the Sarawak government and other stakeholders with insights about promoting digital inclusion among farmers.

Hotel customers’ behavioral intentions toward service robots: the role of utilitarian and hedonic values

Peer Pressure, Information Technology Adoption, and Bank Performance

Manuscript type: Research paper Research aims: The study examines cross-sectional dependence among banks to invest in information technology-related assets. We also analyse the short- and long-term impacts of information technology (IT) adoption on banks’ profitability and the variations in effects between early and late adopters. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study uses autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) with dynamic fixed approach, standard fixed-effect ordinary least square and random effect model with double clustering regressions. Research findings: The study finds a positive effect of peer pressure on a bank’s investment in IT assets. It also documents that IT adoption reduces short-term profitability, but the joint effect of early adoption increases both short- and long-term profitability. Theoretical contribution/Originality: The study contributes to the banking and technology adoption literature by showing the evidence on a positive and significant effect of peer pressure on IT adoption. Practitioner/Policy implications: The findings are significant for the banking sector’s policy makers in emerging economies. Research limitation: The findings may not be applicable in the context of a developed economy with a strong IT infrastructure.

FAKTOR-FAKTOR PENENTU YANG MEMPENGARUHI ADOPSI CLOUD COMPUTING DI INDONESIA

Today's technology is getting more and more advanced. Cloud Computing is one of the fastest growing technologies in Indonesia. Cloud Computing technology has developed in various business sectors from manufacturing companies to services. The purpose of making this paper is to answer the determining factors that have an impact on the company's decision to adopt Cloud Computing in Indonesia, using 2 approaches to the technology adoption literature. The survey conducted is a modification of the previous research which was distributed via google form, where the prospective respondents are those who work in companies in Indonesia from 12 September 2022 to 2 October 2022. There are 66 respondents who participated in this survey. The analysis uses SMART PLS3 software, which tests Conbarch Alpha, Outer Loading, Coefficient Path, Composite Reliability, Discriminant Validity. The results of this study show that compatibility, and complexity have a significant impact on perceived usefulness, top management support has a significant impact on perceived ease of use, and perceived ease of use has an impact on cloud computing adoption.

Determinants of Electric Road System Adoption by Road Freight Companies

This study analyzes the determinants of road freight companies’ adoption intention regarding the electric road systems (e-roads) on Swedish motorways. A research model was developed based on the technology adoption literature and Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework. Survey data were gathered from 160 Swedish road freight companies, and structural equation modeling was performed to test the model empirically. The results reveal relative advantage, a technology characteristic, as the main determinant of road freight companies’ intention to adopt electric road systems. The study contributes to the TOE framework by reporting on the indirect effects of technological and organizational determinants on organizational intention to adopt technologies.

The role of Internet security awareness as a moderating variable on cyber security perception: Learning management system as a case study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of different dimensions of cyber security perception on university students’ attitudes towards using a learning management system (LMS) and to what extent these relationships can be moderated by Internet security awareness. To accomplish this, an extensive review of technology adoption literature has been conducted, and a theoretical model was presented. The study applied a quantitative-based approach that used a survey questionnaire to collect 261 responses from college-level students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. To test the research model, the researcher used SmartPLS version 3 which applies partial least squares-based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Analysis showed that perceived privacy, trust in the Internet, trust in the university, and perceived cyber risk are key influencers factors on attitude and that all these correlations are moderated by Internet security awareness except for the association between trust in the university and attitude. The outcome of the study contributes to academia by enriching the existing literature on technology adoption in educational settings. The results also benefit practitioners and policymakers in terms of enhancing the awareness of LMS users which in turn leads to a better attitude towards system use.

Factors Influencing the Clinical Adoption of Quantitative Gait Analysis Technologies for Adult Patient Populations With a Focus on Clinical Efficacy and Clinician Perspectives: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

Quantitative gait analysis can support clinical decision-making. These analyses can be performed using wearable sensors, nonwearable sensors, or a combination of both. However, to date, they have not been widely adopted in clinical practice. Technology adoption literature has highlighted the clinical efficacy of technology and the users' perspective on the technology (eg, ease of use and usefulness) as some factors that influence their widespread adoption. To assist with the clinical adoption of quantitative gait technologies, this scoping review will synthesize the literature on their clinical efficacy and clinician perspectives on their use in the clinical care of adult patient populations. This scoping review protocol follows the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. The review will include both peer-reviewed and gray literature (ie, conference abstracts) regarding the clinical efficacy of quantitative gait technologies and clinician perspectives on their use in the clinical care of adult patient populations. A comprehensive search strategy was created in MEDLINE (Ovid), which was then translated to 4 other databases: CENTRAL (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCO), and SPORTDiscus (EBSCO). The title and abstract screening, full-text review, and data extraction of relevant articles will be performed independently by 2 reviewers, with a third reviewer involved to support the resolution of conflicts. Data will be analyzed using content analysis and summarized in tabular and diagram formats. A search of relevant articles will be conducted in all 5 databases, and through hand-searching in Google Scholar and PEDro, including articles published up until December 2022. The research team plans to submit the final scoping review for publication in a peer-reviewed journal in 2023. The findings of this review will be presented at clinical science conferences and published in a peer-reviewed journal. This review will inform future studies designed to develop, evaluate, or implement quantitative gait analysis technologies in clinical practice. DERR1-10.2196/39767.

Overview of Information and Communications Technology Adoption among Rural Business

Industry Revolution 4.0 has changed the way business operates and demanded the business transform its operation from traditional into the digital market. The intense to encourage this shift is increasing when it comes to rural economy where geographical distance becomes one of the major barriers that have been eliminated. This transformation is crucial so that rural entrepreneurs can grow their business and attract their potential business stakeholders to reach them locally and globally. However, regardless of the importance of digital economy transitions, rural businesses still face huge challenges that inhibit them to adopt the information and communications technology successfully. Realizing the importance of e-commerce adoption in this era, this study aims to review and critically analyzed the information and communications technology adoption literature specifically in rural areas to provide a generic overview on the current situations of information and communications technology adoption among businesses in rural areas. Finally, fruitful potential researches have been suggested to deepen our understanding and knowledge pertaining to this issue in the future.

Impact of E-Commerce and Digital Marketing Adoption on the Financial and Sustainability Performance of MSMEs during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Empirical Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has remarkably affected the business processes and performance of micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) across the world. MSMEs have had to adopt and implement numerous strategies to sustain their businesses, and their financial and sustainability performance has been impacted by their choice of e-commerce (EC) platforms and digital marketing (DM) strategies. The objective of this research was to explore the effects of EC and DM platforms and strategies on facilitating MSMEs’ financial and sustainability performance amid the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. This study gathered data from 212 MSMEs from three districts of Bangladesh. A partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach was undertaken, to test the hypothesized model. The findings revealed that e-commerce had a significant association with MSMEs’ financial performance and sustainability amid the pandemic. It was also observed that digital marketing strategies had a substantial impact on MSMEs’ financial performance. However, the linkage between DM strategies and MSMEs’ sustainability was found to be insignificant. Furthermore, it was found that the financial performance of MSMEs mediated the relationship between e-commerce adoption and their sustainability performance. These findings contribute to the extant technology adoption literature, by exploring the role of e-commerce and digital marketing on firms’ financial outcomes amid a global pandemic. Managers and policymakers of small businesses can learn several things from this study, and understand how crucial digital commerce and digital marketing are to their success and long-term survival.

Market Access and Value-added Strategies in the Specialty Crops Industry

Value-added (VA) technologies can help farmers in the specialty crops industry generate new products, increase off-season income sources, expand market access, and improve overall profitability. The United States Department of Agriculture defines VA agricultural products as those that have been changed physically or produced in a manner that enhances their value. Drawing from this definition, we investigated the adoption of VA technologies, such as drying, physical cutting into customer-ready portions, and washing, by specialty crops farmers. The objectives of this study were two-fold. First, we analyzed how market access drives specialty crop farmers to adopt VA technologies. Second, we addressed key identification issues by investigating the potential endogeneity between the adoption of VA technologies (vertical diversification) and the number of crops (horizontal diversification), which have not been addressed in the VA technology adoption literature. Data for this study were from a 2019 Web-based survey of specialty crops farmers in the United States. The results suggest that market access, growers’ networks, and crop diversification are major drivers of VA technology adoption in the specialty crops industry. The results indicate that farmers who adopted VA technologies experienced economic growth relative to their counterparts.

Factors influencing students’ adoption and use of mobile learning management systems (m-LMSs): A quantitative study of Saudi Arabia

In light of the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, people are looking for alternatives to accomplish their work. Education was not isolated from this change, where reliance, in whole or in part, on the use of modern ICTs has become imperative (e-learning). A related term is "mobile learning", which refers to the use of mobile devices in the learning process. Accordingly, the purpose of this research is to examine university level students’ behavioral intentions to use a mobile learning management system (m-LMS) (e.g. Blackboard application) in Saudi Arabia by empirically testing an extended version of the UTAUT model. For data collection, 258 university students participated in an online-based questionnaire. Six out of the eight proposed hypotheses were supported by analysis. PE, EE and LI showed a great impact on BI whereas FC was not significant factor. PMV and AR also demonstrated influence on PE, but UMS indicated no impact on PE. Further, UMS had a significant impact on EE. Results contribute to academia by enriching technology adoption literature in general and m-learning adoption in particular. Findings also contribute to policy and practice by providing insights to officials, decision makers, educators and learning management systems developers in terms of strategy, system design and resource management to meet the needs of students to increase their behavioral intentions to use m-LMS.

The “Mainstreaming” of Online Teaching and Conflicted Faculty Perceptions

The COVID-19 pandemic heavily accelerated the adoption of online education. Technology adoption literature indicates that individuals are motivated to adopt technology as a result of various factors including social influence, performance expectations, effort expectations, and the conditions that facilitate their use. These factors are mediated by the degree of voluntariness of technology adoption and risks and rewards associated with adopting online learning. Given the pandemic experience, faculty members were forced to adopt online teaching, removing the voluntary nature of technology adoption. This study surveys a national sample of faculty to understand faculty perceptions of online teaching and reports on perceived changes in perceptions resulting from the pandemic and future intentions to teach online. In contrast to prior literature, findings indicate that faculty tend to have positive perceptions of knowledge outcomes associated with online teaching, and although there are areas for improvement, most faculty members intend to teach online again post-pandemic.

Sustaining Teaching with Technology after the Quarantine: Evidence from Chinese EFL Teachers’ Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge

Given that little is known about English teachers’ technological, pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK), this study examined teachers’ TPACK of using interactive whiteboards (IWBs) by contextualizing the research in the Chinese EFL context. Surveys and multi-case interviews were conducted among secondary school EFL teachers. The results revealed that Chinese EFL teachers generally perceived themselves to be competent in TPACK, with content knowledge achieving the highest value (5.545) and technological knowledge having the lowest value (5.147). In addition, teachers with higher professional titles perceived themselves as having lower TPACK. Barriers to using IWBs in English teaching include a lack of using efficacy regarding IWBs, traditional teaching beliefs, insufficient technical support and training, defects in IWBs for English teaching and time constraints. This study enriched technology adoption literature and informed policymakers and educational institutions of the necessity to provide specialized training to improve teachers’ TPACK and take measures to reduce teachers’ non-teaching-related tasks to ensure sustainable technology adoption in English teaching.

A General-Equilibrium Model of Labor-Saving Technology Adoption: Theory and Evidences from Robotic Milking Systems in Idaho

Automatic milking systems (AMSs) have become increasingly common in the US in the past few years. Recent surveys from Idaho, one of the largest dairy-producing states, as well as from other states and countries, suggest that: 1. among farms adopting robotic milking systems, few are reporting less labor usage after adopting this labor-saving technology; 2. small farms rather than large farms are adopting (or more interested in adopting) robotic milking systems. In this article, we propose a series of new modeling strategies, which introduces the role of general-equilibrium effects to explain these new stylized facts. We show that: first, farms adopting labor-saving technology may, in fact, use more labor to compensate for the loss in the value of labor; second, when smaller farms experience more labor efficiency gains or value their leisure time (or off-farm income) more, they are more likely than larger farms to adopt the new technology. We contribute to the technology-adoption literature in two important ways. First, to our knowledge, this is the first article that introduces general-equilibrium effects to the technology-adoption literature. Second, this is also the first article that provides a theoretical perspective to explain the stylized facts in the adoption of robotic milking systems.
