Literary Tourism in Saudi Arabia (Poetic Tourism in Najd)

This research aims to identify the potential of literary/poetic tourism in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - specifically Najd region, due to its richness with poetic heritage. The study also sought to define this type of tourism, and explain its connection to poetry, and the importance of place to the poet. It also attempts to reveal the importance of literary/poetic tourism, by associating Arabic heritage poetry to certain locations that deserves to be recognized as a tourist attraction, and be prepared to become a tourist attraction equipped with the best facilities to attract tourists of all kinds. In addition to the psychological effect these places has on the visitors and the role of poetry in the country’s cultural renaissance. Our main motivation for this study is to prove that the Arabian peninsula has a historical and unique literary/poetic treasure, as poetry is one of the most important subjects that must be introduced to tourism to maintain its sustainability and celebrate the poetic heritage. One of the most important goals sought by this research is to pin out these places and encourage the Kingdom to care and preserve them. Such initiative will open up great economic and cultural resources, in accordance with the Vision 2030, and the Ministry of Culture in its initiative of making 2023 the Year of Arabic Poetry.

Berlin in English: The German capital in recent Anglophone fiction

This article examines the representation of Berlin in a cluster of recent English-language novels by writers including Amit Chaudhuri, Adrian Duncan, Helon Habila, Hari Kunzru, Lauren Oyler, Chris Power, Bea Setton and Matthew Sperling. Showing how the use of English in Berlin has been at the centre of contemporary German debates about migration and cultural identity and explaining how the image of Berlin in English literature has often been balanced between pulp and literary fiction, it asks if this body of contemporary Anglophone writing amounts to something more than literary tourism. Examining its representation of Berlin as both a mnemonic and touristic space, the acuity of its depiction of the city three decades after reunification, and the ways in which it represents different forms of migration to the city, the article contends that these novels do have valuable things to say, particularly concerning the ways in which an urban literary imaginary is being reconfigured for a digital age.

Fang experiences in Whitby’s Goth/ic theatre

A sign which regularly appears on the door of St Mary’s Church in Whitby, North Yorkshire, alerts visitors that Dracula is not buried in the churchyard. Dracula arrives in Whitby in Bram Stoker’s fiction, exits the stage and finally turns to dust near his Transylvanian castle. The sign, however, underscores Dracula’s enduring association with Whitby, forged by Stoker’s visit to the town in the summer of 1890. Just over one hundred years after Stoker’s visit, Jo Hampshire, a Goth from Barnsley, West Yorkshire, inspired by Dracula’s association with the town, arranged a Goth visit to Whitby, after posting an advertisement in NME magazine. The gathering launched what would become Whitby Goth Weekend (WGW). Thirty years after Hampshire’s visit, Whitby attracts a range of Goth/ic tourists, a term which here denotes Goths, the subcultural movement dating from the 1970s, and those who are attracted to the Gothic from literary tourists to Instagrammers. The article explores how Whitby, particularly its East Cliff, inspired by Stoker’s vision, operates as Goth/ic tourist space and, in particular, how it presents and is experienced as Goth/ic theatre. It reads the Whitby passages from Dracula in the context of Stoker’s experience of Gothic and melodramatic performance at London’s Lyceum theatre where Stoker worked as business manager. It traces the establishment of WGW in 1994, its evolution and adaptation in the age of social media, and how Whitby has developed to become a place of Goth/ic experience, performance and cultural contestation.

Literary tourism in the Canary Islands: the legacy of Sanmao

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to explore two recent initiatives in literary tourism, i.e. two literary trails in the Canary Islands, Spain, linked to the iconic Chinese writer Sanmao, who lived on the islands of Gran Canaria and La Palma in the 1970s and 80s, and who became a literary phenomenon, elevated to myth by many in China for the humanistic power of her narrative. After an overview of new trends in Chinese outbound tourism, the focus is set on Sanmao’s life and literary legacy, including aspects related to the recent publication in the West of the translations of some of her stories, opening her world to a new readership. An outline of theory concerning literary tourism is given, followed by the methodology used in this research. Next, the literary trails designed by the Tourism Boards of both islands are described. The readers’ connections with Sanmao are analyzed through a specific online survey, as well as additional primary data based on a series of interviews with key actors. The results provide a valuable contribution to a better understanding of Sanmao and of the motivations of literary pilgrims who travel to these distant lands in order to pay tribute to her.

Литературный туризм как социальное явление: исследование культурных практик и туристической индустрии в России

This article scrutinizes literary tourism as a social phenomenon, delving into its sociocultural aspects, including the formation of tourists’ identities, their attitudes towards cultural heritage, and their perception of literary works. It underscores the pivotal role of literary tourism in the development of regional economy and cultural tourism at large. The significant importance of literary routes, writers’ museums, and literary festivals in attract-ing tourists and shaping the image of cultural tourism in Russia is highlighted, alongside the impact of literary works on tourist activity. Literary sites that allure tourists are identified. The article presents a study elucidating the influence of literary heritage on the development of the tourism industry in Russia. The results of the study facilitate a deeper understanding of the dynamics of literary tourism as a social phenomenon and its contribu-tion to the development of the country’s cultural sphere.

How literary tourism changes the tourists’ “baggage”: a conceptual framework for the educational function of literary tourism

ABSTRACT This conceptual study aims to provide a framework for the educational function of literary tourism, a niche within cultural, heritage and media-related tourism, by focusing on the relationship between tourism and education. The conceptual framework, established through previous research on literary museums, literary festivals, and literary routes, demonstrates that literary tourism offers tourists experiential and transformative learning experiences. Literary tourism offerings not only influence tourists’ literary knowledge and practical skill levels but also provide awareness that can potentially transform their personal lives and alter perspectives. The gains individuals acquire through literary tourism highlight the necessity of emphasizing the educational function of literary tourism. This underscores the significance for literary sites, literary destinations, tour operators, educational institutions, and similar stakeholders to invest in promoting this educational function. The conceptual framework outlined in this study regarding the educational function of literary tourism can serve as a valuable reference point for literary tourism initiatives and research.

Mapping the Brink of Literary History at Ellisland Farm

This article presents new documentary evidence of the history of Ellisland farm, where Burns lived between 1788 and 1791. Its main subject is an April 1787 map of Ellisland executed by the surveyor William McCartney for the landowner Patrick Miller of Dalswinton in anticipation of what would become Burns’s tenancy. The article examines McCartney’s map alongside a later 1817 survey map and other supporting evidence, identifying temporal layers on the 1787 map that capture Burns’s activities as an improving tenant farmer at Ellisland. It further positions the 1787 map within the memorialisation and literary tourism that evolved around Burns in the nineteenth century.

Development of Pujan Kasanga Tengger Literary Tourism in Tengger Villages, Tosari District, Pasuruan Regency

The rich tradition and diversity of oral traditions of the people of Tengger Village, Tosari District, has actually become one of the supporting media in the development of the tourism sector. The concept of tourism combined with oral traditions can become a potential resource. However, human resources as supporting the existence of tourism have not been prepared and empowered to the fullest. For this reason, the solution to the problem offered to overcome this problem is to determine the characteristics of tourism based on the potential of local wisdom; preparing human resources with provision of traditional documentation, as well as provision of digital literacy skills; transfer of the Pujan kasanga tradition and orality phenomena related into digital illustrated stories; as well as ongoing assistance for the development of literary tourism based on the Pujan Kasanga tradition. Target audiences that can be partners in this service are traditional priesthoods, village government, art groups, pradah youth groups, and the local community. The expected outcomes of this community activity are the identification of the potential and manifestation of local wisdom through the basis for determining the characteristics of the Tengger Villages, Tosari District, the ability to document local cultural potential, the ability to use and publish fairy tales through digital platforms, the publication of illustrations and descriptions of Pujan Kasanga and more concrete and interesting illustrated fairy tales on digital media. This service is expected to be of benefit to the people of Tengger Village, Tosari District in terms of improving the economy and increasing public awareness regarding the importance of preserving and exploiting cultural potential.

Kültür turizmi ile miras turizminin nişleri olan edebiyat turizmi ve hüzün turizminin kesişiminden yeni bir alt-niş olarak edebi hüzün turizmi ortaya çıkmıştır. Edebi eserlerden ilham alınan ya da yazarların hayatlarıyla bağlantılı olan acı, ölüm ve korkuyla ilişkilendirilen destinasyonlar ve mekânlar bu alt-niş kapsamında değerlendirilmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, edebi hüzün turizmi kavramı ve temsillerine karşı bir anlayış geliştirmektir. Bu amaçla çalışmada edebi hüzün turizmi kapsamına giren ürün ve deneyimler ele alınmıştır. Edebi hüzün turizmi, hem edebiyat turizmi hem de hüzün turizminden motivasyonlar barındırmasından dolayı her iki nişe göre farklı deneyimler sağlayabilmektedir. Bu alt-niş turistler açısından yazarlarla yakınlık ve bağlantı kurma, yazarların kendi hayatları üzerindeki etkilerini fark etme, yazarların koşullarını ve eserlerini nasıl meydana getirdiklerini idrak etme, edebi eserleri daha iyi anlama, tarihe tanıklık etme, geçmişle günümüzü karşılaştırabilme ve içsel yolculuk imkânı gibi kişisel farkındalık, toplumsal hafıza ve eğitimle ilgili alanlarda çeşitli deneyimler sunabilmektedir.

Florence as Muse: Byron and Shelley’s Tuscan Competition

ABSTRACT Florence’s art and poetry captured the imaginations of Byron and Shelley. During the nineteenth century, the city-state and the surrounding countryside inspired literary tourists and Byron and Shelley were no exceptions. This article focuses on the Florentine dimension of the Byron-Shelley relationship. It considers Byron’s and Shelley’s poetry inspired by the art each saw in Florence, before going on to discuss each poet’s response to Dante’s and Petrarch’s examples. It shows that the influence of Florence’s art and Florentine artists was the centerpiece of Byron’s and Shelley’s connection to the city. First considering Byron’s stanzas on the Medici Venus from Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, canto 4, and Shelley’s “On the Medusa of Leonardo da Vinci, in the Florentine Gallery,” this article claims that The Triumph of Life reveals a sea change in Shelley as he approaches Dante and Petrarch in the wake of Byron’s The Prophecy of Dante. Shelley rejects Byron’s technique of “centring the self” in favor of poetry woven from carefully controlled allusion that places the visionary mode at its core. Reading Shelley’s creative relationship with Byron through their responses to Florentine art shows how Shelley found a distinctive voice designed to counter and even surpass Byron’s.

The Impact of Turkish Literature on Tourism During the Republican Era and Alternative Destination Recommendations within the Scope of Literary Tourism

Edebiyat ve turizm, farklı özelliklere sahip iki disiplin olsa da birbirleri üzerindeki zamanla artan etkilerinin ve yakınlaşan ilişkilerinin sonucunda “edebiyat turizmi” kavramı ortaya çıkmıştır. Edebî eserlerin kişiler üzerinde bıraktığı etki okuyucuları birer turiste dönüştürebileceği gibi, turizmin de edebî eserlerin çeşitlenmesinde ve bilinirliğinin artmasında etkili olabileceği edebiyat turizmi aracılığıyla daha net anlaşılmıştır. Belirtilen ilişki çerçevesinde bu çalışmada Cumhuriyet Dönemi Türk Edebiyatı’nı turizme etkisi ve yeni edebiyat turizmi destinasyonları önerilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada Cumhuriyet Dönemi Türk Edebiyatı’nın ön plana çıkan roman türüne ait eserleri başta olmak üzere, Cumhuriyet öncesi ve Modern Türk Edebiyatı eserleri de incelenerek bu eserlerdeki içeriklerin yeni bir edebiyat turizmi destinasyonuna elverişliliği değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan incelemeler sonucu; Türk Edebiyatı’nın öncü yazarları Halide Edip Adıvar, Reşat Nuri Güntekin, Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu, Orhan Kemal ve Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil’in romanlarından hareketle yeni edebiyat turizmi destinasyonları geliştirilebileceği anlaşılmıştır. Turizme kazandırılacak yeni turizm destinasyonlarının, Türkiye’nin 100 yıllık Cumhuriyet tarihinin zengin ve başarılı çıktıları olacağının, Cumhuriyet’in bundan sonraki yıllarında da Türk Edebiyatı’nın ve Türk turizminin hak ettiği değere ulaşmasında önemli bir görev üstleneceğinin altı çizilmiştir.

Event Sastra Festival Temu Penyair Asia Tenggara II di Padang Panjang sebagai Potensi Pariwisata

This research aims to explore the literary event, theTemu Penyair Asia Tenggara II (TPAT) or Southeast Asian Poets Gathering II, as a potential tourism attraction. The background of this study lies in the existence of various literary festivals across the archipelago that have the potential to boost tourism, yet remain unknown to the wider public. One such event is held in Padang Panjang. This research investigates the impact of visitors' experiences on their return visits to the city where the festival takes place. The methodology employed in this research is a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative methods were used to collect data through a survey questionnaire distributed to 14 respondents, covering 10 key indicators. Subsequently, the questionnaire data was processed using qualitative descriptive analysis with a focus on literary tourism. The research corpus is the TPAT II festival held in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra. Data collection involved distributing questionnaires to 14 correspondents, addressing 10 specific indicators. The research process included data collection through field surveys. The collected data was then processed and analyzed to reveal the literary event's potential as a tourism attraction, employing literary tourism perspectives. The findings of this research indicate that visitors perceive literature and tourism, as showcased in the festival held in Padang Panjang, positively. This perception leads to a desire among visitors to return to Padang Panjang. Visitor satisfaction is anticipated to serve as a model for organizing other festivals, acting as promotional platforms for lesser-known places or tourist destinations, thereby contributing to sustainable tourism. Consequently, regions hosting TPAT II events are expected to become tourism assets for Padang Panjang.

Evolutionary Paths and Trends in Literary Tourism Research: A Visual Analysis Based on Citespace

ABSTRACT To understand research and hot topics in literary tourism, explore the evolution of research paths, identify cutting-edge topics, and provide guidance for future research. Using Citespace software, we analyzed literature related to literary tourism in the Web of Science database between 2003 and 2022. The results reveal that research in the field is growing and diversifying, with a focus on tourism destinations, tourist satisfaction, and marketing and management. Authorship is fragmented, with low levels of collaboration, while institutions are more concentrated and dominated by core research institutions. To promote theoretical innovation, future research should strengthen inter-team communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration. In-depth research on the evaluation of sustainable tourism, policies and regulations, and regulatory mechanisms is also necessary.

Lake Toba Fictionalizations Through Indonesian Writings: A Literary Tourism Approach

The beauty of Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Indonesia, not only attracts tourists to come but also inspires novelists to write their literary works. This study is an attempt to understand the fictionalizations of Lake Toba as setting places with references to three Indonesian novels, i.e., Situmorang’s Sordam (2010), Silalahi’s ToBa Dreams (2015), and Batu’s Tepi Toba (2019). This study focuses on how the three novels express the images of Lake Toba and its surroundings and the meaning of the similar and different expressions in a Lake Toba promotion context as a tourist destination. This study adopts an interpretive, qualitative method through a phenomenology paradigm. With a close reading technique, data are analyzed by employing a literary tourism approach with the support of the expressive theory. The findings reveal that the three authors express the images of Lake Toba and its surroundings romantically and critically. In addition to promoting Lake Toba as a tourism destination, both portrayals also help remind all stakeholders, including the government, local community, and visitors, to save Lake Toba and its surroundings from deforestation and water pollution. By investigating the fictionalizations of Lake Toba throughout novels based on the authors’ perspectives, one can increase their understanding of the importance of literary texts to the tourism industry.

Constructions of Cosmopolitanism in the Making of Welsh Writing in English

This paper argues that the politics of Brexit has created a particular challenge for intellectuals in Wales because although for the most part they have been interested in forging cultural connections with Europe and the rest of the world, they were forced to accept in June 2016 that not only a majority of British voters decided to leave the European Union, but also that a majority of Welsh voters had done so, so that there was a disconnect between Wales's intellectuals and its population as a whole. Going on from here the paper argues that establishing diversity, cosmopolitanism and interculturalism as typical aspects of Welsh culture, which has long been practised by Welsh intellectuals and writers, has more recently been taken up as part of the process by which Brexit was symbolically challenged within Wales. A key component of this commitment to a form of cultural politics that is both nationalist and also politically progressive in Wales has been its literature, which through various material means has been constructed and framed along these lines. Focusing first on specialist book series, then on  literary festivals, thirdly on sites of literary tourism in Wales and finally on literary prizes the paper explores ways in which qualities of cosmopolitanism and interculturalism have been embedded in that literature and hence in the wider culture. In turn, it suggests that establishing these characteristics as intrinsic features of the national culture has provided Welsh intellectuals with some means of overcoming the gap between the intelligentsia and the wider population created by Brexit and so enabling a reconnection between them.

WISATA SASTRA PADA PUISI PAHLAWAN KERJA KARYA H.R. SUBRANTAS DI CAGAR BUDAYA MONUMEN KERETA API

Literature and tourism is a new approach that connects literature with tourism. This approach is very important given the close connection between a literary work and the setting of the place that is told in the work. With this linkage, literary works also contribute to the progress of tourism. If we look at the poetry of Pahlawan Kerja, there is literary tourism that reflects poetry and it’s strong relationship with the Cultural Heritage site, the Railway Monument and the Heroes Cemetery. Using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structural theory, H.R Soebrantas' poem Pahlawan Kerja is analyzed so that literary tourism that reflects history, culture, and religion is found.
