Correspondence between South African geologist Alex L. du Toit and Birbal Sahni concerning Gondwana Palaeobotany (1925–1944)

Birbal Sahni (1891-1949) was well known as the first Indian palaeobotanist, and he established the Institute that was named after him, now the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences. Alexander L. du Toit (1878-1948) was the most famous South African geologist, known internationally for advocating the idea of Continental Drift, and for his work on Gondwana geology and palaeobotany. Du Toit was introduced to Sahni by Albert Seward, who was Sahni’s mentor at Cambridge University. They started a correspondence in 1925, involving the exchange of papers, books, and samples, which lasted at least until 1944. Du Toit and Sahni met in 1938 at the Indian Science Congress in Calcutta. Their preserved letters deal with the palaeobotany, correlations, and age of the Rajmahal beds, and later with the palynological investigations of Karoo Dwyka samples sent by du Toit to Sahni, which were worked on by D. D. Pant, who had been a student of Sahni. This correspondence reveals in detail just how these geoscientists involved with problems of Gondwana palaeogeography tackled these questions in spite of the long distances, and slow communications of the time. Information, especially that published in local journals, was disseminated by means of sending reprints, proof copies, and sometimes by handwritten lists of fossils. Although, initially, Sahni had obtained South African and Australian fossil material through the British Museum in London, he later obtained South African samples specially collected for him by du Toit. Samples were also exchanged between South Africa, England, India and Australia.

A new species ofAmpulicomorphaAshmead from Eocene French amber, with a list of fossil and extant Embolemidae (Insecta: Hymenoptera) of the world

Embolemidae is a cosmopolitan but species-poor group of chrysidoid wasps with a scarce fossil record, despite a long evolutionary history since at least the Early Cretaceous. Here, the new species,Ampulicomorpha quesnoyensissp. nov., is illustrated and described based on a single female found in Early Eocene amber of Oise (France). The new species is compared with the three other known fossil species of the genus, and a key to all fossil species ofAmpulicomorphais provided. This is the third European fossil species ofAmpulicomorpha, which suggests that the genus was once well established in Western Europe while it is more widely distributed in the Eastern Palaearctic region today. A list of all fossil and extant Embolemidae of the world, as well as a map of their geographical distribution map, are provided.

Major stages in the studies of the Permian marine basins of Mongolia and new data on their biostratigraphy and fauna

Invertebrate faunal assemblages from sedimentary beds of marine basins of Mongolia are studied. The paper includes descriptions, lists of fossils, and coordinates of the reference and auxiliary sections. Eight horizons, 11 brachiopod, and four foraminiferal zones are substantiated. The lists of fossils for all brachiopod and foraminiferal zones of the Khangai-Khentei (Boreal) and South Mongolian (Tethys) basins are given. The evolution of Mongolian basins is analyzed; possible biogeographic connections, pathways and trends in migrations of brachiopods are considered. The correlation of the recognized horizons and zones with equivalents in the adjacent regions in northeastern Asia is substantiated.

Picidae in the European fossil, subfossil and recent bird faunas and their osteological characteristics

Abstract This paper presents the European fossil, subfossil and recent representatives of the Picidae family. Following the list of fossil and subfossil remains, the author analyzes and presents images of the osteological characteristics of the order’s 10 recent European species. Skeletal parts that are usually present both in the fossil and subfossil material were examined (mandibula, coracoideum, scapula, humerus, ulna, metacarpus, the first phalanx of the second finger of the wing, femur, tibiotarsus, tarsometatarsus and distal phalanx). The text is complemented with the bibliography concerning the fossilized material, tables and figures and a size chart.

How to date a dragonfly: Fossil calibrations for odonates

Molecular data along with fossils are being used increasingly to recover time-calibrated phylogenetic trees. Recently there have been manuscripts that have used divergence dating to understand evolutionary history of certain clades within Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), yet the number of such articles is still low. We examined the Odonata fossil record and made a list of fossils that can be used for divergence time analysis. In this manuscript we provide a detailed review of the known crown group fossils for the order Odonata and nine nodes within this clade: Zygoptera, Epiprocta, Anisoptera, Aeshnidae, Gomphidae, Cavilabiata, Macromiidae, Corduliidae, and Libellulidae. Cambrian fossils from the Barrandian area (Czech Republic) stored in the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de Lille

A complete list of fossils originating from the Cambrian of the Barrandian area and housed in the Musee d'Histoire Naturelle de Lille is compiled. The collection includes two agnostids, ten trilobites, one brachiopod and one echinoderm species, all collected at ten outcrops in the Buchava Formation of the Skryje-Týřovice Basin and most probably also at two outcrops in the Jince Formation of the Přibram-Jince Basin. A large part of the material was collected by Prof. Charles Barrois and Dr. Louis Dolle (both University of Lille) during the excursion organised before the Ninth International Geological Congress in Vienna in 1903. Other, poorly documented specimens were purchased from the enterprise Krantz towards the end of the 19th century and in the first years of 20th century. The geographic position and stratigraphy of outcrops, from which the material originates, are briefly discussed.

A new genus of Trichomyiinae (Diptera: Psychodidae) from Upper Cretaceous amber of New Jersey

Xenotrichomyia newjerseyiensis a new genus and species belonging to Trichomyiinae within Psychodidae is characterized, described, illustrated and its taxonomic position is discussed. It shares some similarities with Trichomyiinae of group B, but retains some archaic features, such as normal and non-excentric flagellomeres, and possesses an autapomorphy in wing venation that distinguish it from all remaining Trichomyiinae. This discovery represents the first Trichomyiinae (Psychodidae) from the Upper Cretaceous New Jersey amber, and adds more evidence on the very high palaeodiversity of the psychodids since at least the Lower Cretaceous. An updated check list of fossil Trichomyiinae is given.

Easternmost Mediterranean evidence of the Zanclean flooding event and subsequent surface uplift: Adana Basin, southern Turkey

Abstract According to the literature, the Adana Basin, at the easternmost part of the Mediterranean Basin in southern Turkey, records the Pliocene stage with shallow-marine to fluvial deposits. Our micropalaeontological analysis of samples from the Adana Basin reveal Late Lago–Mare biofacies with Paratethyan ostracod assemblages pertaining to the Loxocorniculina djafarovi zone. Grey clays rich in planktonic foraminifera lie above the Lago–Mare deposits. Within the grey clays, the continuous occurrence of the calcareous nannofossil Reticulofenestra zancleana and the base of the Reticulofenestra pseudoumbilicus paracme points to an Early Zanclean age (5.332–5.199 Ma). Both ostracod and benthic foraminifera indicate epibathyal and bathyal environments. 87 Sr/ 86 Sr measurements on planktonic and benthic foraminifera fall below the mean global ocean value for the Early Zanclean, indicating potentially insufficient mixing of low 87 Sr/ 86 Sr Mediterranean brackish ‘Lago–Mare’ water with the global ocean in the earliest Pliocene. We utilize the ages and palaeodepths of the marine sediments together with their modern elevations to determine uplift rates of the Adana Basin of 0.06 to 0.13 mm a −1 since 5.2–5.3 Ma (total uplift of 350–650 m) from surface data, and 0.02–0.13 mm a −1 since c. 1.8 Ma (total uplift of 30–230 m) from subsurface data. The first Psychodidae (Insecta: Diptera) from the lower Eocene Fushun amber of China

Trichomyia duckhousei, a new species belonging to Psychodidae Trichomyiinae, is characterized and described based on a well-preserved specimen from the lower Eocene Fushun amber of China. It shares some similarities withTrichomyiaof Group B, but has some features present in the fossil record but not in Recent taxa, such as non-eccentric flagellomeres and long legs. This discovery represents the first Trichomyiinae (Psychodidae) from the Fushun amber, and adds more evidence on the very high palaeodiversity of the psychodids since at least the middle Cretaceous. An updated check list of fossil Trichomyiinae is given.

Continental deposits, magnetostratigraphy and vertebrate paleontology, late Neogene of Eastern Spain

Abstract Eleven sections have been sampled for magnetostratigraphy in the fossil mammal-productive late Neogene basins of eastern Spain. The characteristic direction of magnetization was determined through progressive thermal and alternating field demagnetization. It was possible to correlate the magnetozones from the various sections to the GPTS as well as to the fossil MN zones within the sediment. The MN zone boundaries based on this correlation are as follows: MN 11/12 ⋍ 8.1 my; MN 12/13 ⋍ 6 my; MN 13/14 ⋍ 4.9 my; MN 14/15 = 4.18 my; MN 15/16 = 3.58 my. New fossil lists are presented for the Fuente del Viso and Loma del Castillo faunas in the Cabriel Basin.

A list of fossil and extant dipnoans

The six known extant species of lungfish, their familial designation, and continental distribution are listed. A second list includes 55 genera and 112 species described from the fossil record, their age, geographical distribution, a brief description of the material preserved, and literature sources. The second list includes two monotypic genera thought to have dipnoan affinities. Although the list of fossil material does not include all genera and species described, it does include all the better preserved taxa. Some of the important features of the fossil record of the Dipnoi are summarized.

THE LATE DEVENSIAN VEGETATIONAL HISTORY OF THE WHITLAW MOSSES, SOUTHEAST SCOTLAND

SUMMARYLate Devensian Late‐glacial deposits are described from the Whitlaw Mosses, near Melrose, Roxburghshire (now Borders). Pollen diagrams and macro fossil lists are given for the bottom sediments of Beanrig Moss and Blackpool Moss, two small fens lying in hollows in the undulating boulder clay of Tweeddale. The succession of taxa through the sediments indicates interstadial conditions followed by stadial conditions.Critical determinations of certain microfossil and macrofossil indicator taxa, permits the identification of certain plant communities. These are as follows: Communities identified from within the stadial are;(1) bare‐ground communities of open, wind‐exposed areas with Artemisia cf. norvegica and Papaver spp. of the section scapiflora as the main indicator types;(2) bare‐ground communities in sheltered areas of long snow‐lie with such species as Salix herbacea, Polytrichum norvegicum and P. alpinum.The main communities identified in the interstadial are as follows:(1) scrub with abundant Juniperus and sparse tree birches (e.g. B. pubescens);(2) base‐rich, well‐drained short turf with abundant Helianthemum;(3) damp, tall‐herb meadows in which Rumex acetosa is important;(4) dwarf‐shrub heath with Dryas octopetala and Betula nana;(5) open‐ground communities with Artemisia spp. and Hippophaë.Communities identified from both the stadial and interstadial are:(1) short‐turf calcareous flushes or springs with Selaginella and various mosses;(2) fens and marshy lake margins with, e.g. Homalothecium nitens.Several taxa have not hitherto been found in the Late Devensian of the British Isles, amongst which are Artemisia cf. campestris, A. sect. dracunculus, A. cf. maritima s.l., Gypsophila repens/fastigiata, Hedysarum cf. hedysaroides, Minuartia rubella, Rhacomitrium cf. canescens and Vactinium vitis‐idaea. The identification of the pollen grains and macro fossils is discussed and comments are made on the biogeographical and ecological implications of the records, especially of those species which are now no longer part of the British flora.

Up to several years ago very little was known on the Late Permian Floras in Brazilian Gondwana. This paper is an account of the recent discoveries of eight news localities having the youngest known Glossopteris assemblages in South America. These localities occur along a band about 10 km long in southern Parana State, Brazil. The preliminary list of fossils includes Glossopteris augustifolia, G. browniana, ?G. stricta, Sphenophyllum cf. speciosum, Paracalamites australis, PDizeugotheca as well as precopterid remains, stems, seeds and conchostracean shells.

Ordovician and Silurian Fossils from the Lang River and Allen Bay Formations of Prince of Wales and Somerset Islands, Northwest Territories

ABSTRACT Only brief mention of Ordovician and Silurian fossils from Somerset and Prince of Wales islands has been made in past geological reports. A more comprehensive list of fossils collected from the two lowermost Paleozoic formations (the Lang River and Allen Bay) is presented. Three distinct faunal groups are present in these two formations, a Lower Ordovician, an Upper Ordovician (arctic Ordovician) and a Silurian fauna. The rich and diverse arctic Ordovician fauna is comparable to the Stony Mountain fauna of Manitoba. The Silurian fossils are probably Niagaran in age (Middle Silurian).

A preliminary list of New Zealand fossil polychaetes

Abstract An annotated list of fossil “worm tubes” from New Zealand includes both published and new records from Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits. The binomen Zoophycos plicatus (Hutton) is proposed for the trace fossil long known as the Amuri fucoid, of unknown zoological affinity. The following living species are recorded as New Zealand fossils for the first time: Protula bispiralis (Savigny), Salmacina dysteri (Huxley), Hydroides norvegicus Gunnerus, Pomatoceras cariniferus (Gray), P. aff. terranovae (Benham), Galeolaria hystrix (Moerch), Boccardia ? polybranchia (Haswell); new records of fossil species are Ditrupa cf. plana (Sowerby), Dorsoserpula lumbricalis (Schlotheim), and Neomi-crorbis crenatostriatus (Munster). The name Hipponyx inexpectata Mestayer 1929, applied to a serpulid operculum, is used in the combination Temporaria inexpectata for a tubeworm common in deep water off New Zealand that has also been identified, with associated operculum, from the bathyal Waitotaran (Pliocene) sediments of Pa...

Fossil Mammal Locality on Mount Elgon, Eastern Ugand: Lower Miocene Fossils from Mount Elgon Uganda

An important new fossil locality of Miocene age has been discovered near Butwa on the north-eastern slopes of Mount Elgon. The long list of fossils described here by Dr Alan Walker includes mammals, aquatic reptiles, birds and potamid crabs. The fossils are placed in their geological setting by Dr P. W. G. Brook and Dr R. Macdonald.

Many of these data, particularly for Washington and Oregon, have not been published previously. The chart includes lists of fossils that are most useful stratigraphically and presents correlations with British Columbia, Japan, and the western interior of the United States. Included are maps that show the general distribution of Cretaceous rocks along the Pacific Coast. Such maps for Oregon and Washington show occurrences that are not shown on any other published maps. The fauna of the 100 feet beach clays

I. Introduction. The marine and estuarine clays and sands associated with the 100 feet beach in Scotland have been exhaustively treated in papers and monographs by Brady, Crosskey, Robertson, and others. These workers all remark on the curiously mixed character of their fossil fauna. This contains forms now living in Arctic seas as well as those of more temperate climate, and species of both littoral and off-shore habitats. Although Robertson (8, p. 283) thought that in the clays from at least one locality the deep-water forms were to be found at a lower level than the littoral species, this can by no means be universally established and in general there appears to be no clear separation. The arctic nature of the fauna seems to have become almost a popular belief, in spite of Robertson's criticism (8, p. 114), because of the presence of a few arctic species. But, although due regard must be paid to the significance of minorities, the character of a population is primarily determined by the kind of individuals comprising the bulk of its members. Existing fossil lists, consisting as they usually do, of the names of species recognised in the clays, can at the best give only a very limited and often unsatisfactory picture of the true nature of the population. In 1938 extensions of the sewer system in the Paisley district exposed a number of new sections in the 100 feet beach clays. These were examined by Dr M. Macgregor, Mr W. Fisher and myself

On some Ordovician Fossils from Northern Argentina

The list of fossils described in this paper and their stratigraphical distribution is shown in the Table on p. 122.TheKainellaandLeiostegiumzones of the Quebrada del Toro are the equivalent of the Late Ozarkian of Western North America.The fauna of the arenaceous-calcareous beds of the marine-glacial deposits of the Saladillo group is not characteristic enough to enable an exact determination of the age. Nevertheless, from the stratigraphical position of these beds, they could be considered as indicating Upper Beekmantown age.The lower part of the Parcha group, with the single determinable fossilBasilicoides taurinusgen. et sp. nov. has been provisionally referred to the Llandeilian.The faunule of theAsaphelluszone of the Quebrada de Chalala shows affinities with part of the Tremadocian of England, the Tomkolian of South Chosen, and the upper zones of the “ Ceratopygeregion ” of Scandinavia.The stratigraphical relationship between theKainellaandLeiostegiumzones of the pre-Puna and theAsaphelluszone of Purmamarca is not known.

Fossils as Indicators of Continental Drift

MOST geologists will doubtless agree with Sir Arthur Smith Woodward as to the need for caution in the interpretation of some of the fossil evidence which has been regarded as supporting the hypothesis of continental drift1. The possibility that fossils referred to the same genus or even the same species may have been developed in different areas (whether from a common or different ancestors) is familiar to those who have been concerned with Mollusca or Brachiopoda, but the implications as regards classification or the value of fossil lists are not so well understood, and Sir Arthur's warning is no doubt timely.
