2D Ti4AlN3 (MAX): An excellent infrared nonlinear absorption material

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have drawn more attention since the discovery of graphene. The exploration of the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 2D materials has become more urgent. In this work, Ti4AlN3 nanosheets with a thickness of about 1.7–1.9 nm were prepared using the liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method, and the open aperture (OA) Z-scan technique was used to explore the broadband nonlinear absorption (NLA) properties of 2D Ti4AlN3 nanosheets at three wavelengths, namely, 355, 532, and 1064 nm. According to the results, 2D Ti4AlN3 nanosheets exhibited excellent optical limiting (OL) behavior in all three bands, especially in the infrared (IR) band. The large two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient and low OL excitation threshold indicated that Ti4AlN3 had great potential as OL material in the IR band for applications such as optical filters, protection of the human eye, laser protection, etc.

Ultrasonic synthesis of borophene as a 2D electrode material with high electrocatalytic activity for use in fuel cell applications

Green energy systems must be able to provide a significant proportion of the energy needed to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy. Fuel cells are a promising solution to bridge the gap in the green energy transition. This study aims to enhance the energy efficiency of fuel cells by utilizing 2D supported nanocatalysts in the anode compartment. Borophene was synthesized using the liquid phase exfoliation method to be used as a support structure due to its superior properties. To use borophene as a supporting material in methanol fuel cells, a borophene-palladium hybrid structure (Pd@Borophene) was prepared using the chemical reduction method. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the obtained particle had a partially formed layered structure. The electrocatalytic activity of the Pd@Borophene was investigated through anodic reactions in Direct Methanol Alcohol Fuel Cells (DMFC). Electrochemical analyses were conducted to compare the effect of borophene on Pd and Pd@borophene nanocatalysts on the anodic reaction. The anodic peak current value of methanol oxidation for Pd@borophene was found to be 24.3 mA/cm2, which is approximately four times higher than that of unsupported Pd nanoparticles. Additionally, the ratio of forward current (If) to reverse current (Ib), which serves as an indicator of catalyst poisoning, was determined to be 2.27. This study contributes significant findings to the literature by demonstrating that borophene, an advanced 2D material, can be synthesized using a low-cost liquid phase exfoliation method and can be utilized in fuel cell applications for energy generation.

Switchable Single- to Multiwavelength Conventional Soliton and Bound-State Soliton Generated from a NbTe2 Saturable Absorber-Based Passive Mode-Locked Erbium-Doped Fiber Laser.

As a member of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), NbTe2 has a work function of 5.32 eV and a band gap of 0 eV at the Fermi level, which enables it to possess broadband absorption characteristics and has huge potential in optoelectronic devices. In this work, a combination of liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) and optical deposition methods (ODMs) were used to fabricate a NbTe2 saturable absorber (SA). Based on the NbTe2 SA, a ring passive mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (PML-EDFL) was constructed by adding NbTe2 SA into the laser cavity. A switchable single- to multiwavelength (dual/triple/quadruple) conventional soliton (CS) and a bound-state soliton (BS) were observed for the first time. The results reveal that NbTe2 SA has excellent saturable absorption characteristics (modulation depth of 2.6%, saturation intensity of 177.4 MW/cm2, and unsaturated loss of 63.8%) and can suppress mode competition and stabilize multiwavelength oscillation. This study expands the applications of NbTe2 nanosheets in ultrafast optoelectronics. The proposed switchable PML-EDFL has extensive applications in high-capacity all-optical communication, high-sensitivity optical fiber sensing, high-precision spectral measurements, and high-energy-efficiency photon neural networks.

Bayesian Optimization of Environmentally Sustainable Graphene Inks Produced by Wet Jet Milling.

Liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) of graphene is a potentially scalable method to produce conductive graphene inks for printed electronic applications. Among LPE methods, wet jet milling (WJM) is an emerging approach that uses high-speed, turbulent flow to exfoliate graphene nanoplatelets from graphite in a continuous flow manner. Unlike prior WJM work based on toxic, high-boiling-point solvents such as n-methyl-2-pyrollidone (NMP), this study uses the environmentally friendly solvent ethanol and the polymer stabilizer ethyl cellulose (EC). Bayesian optimization and iterative batch sampling are employed to guide the exploration of the experimental phase space (namely, concentrations of graphite and EC in ethanol) in order to identify the Pareto frontier that simultaneously optimizes three performance criteria (graphene yield, conversion rate, and film conductivity). This data-driven strategy identifies vastly different optimal WJM conditions compared to literature precedent, including an optimal loading of 15wt% graphite in ethanol compared to 1wt% graphite in NMP. These WJM conditions provide superlative graphene production rates of 3.2ghr-1 with the resulting graphene nanoplatelets being suitable for screen-printed micro-supercapacitors. Finally, life cycle assessment reveals that ethanol-based WJM graphene exfoliation presents distinct environmental sustainability advantages for greenhouse gas emissions, fossil fuel consumption, and toxicity.

Enhancing the efficient degradation of BPS using the BPNS-CdS composite catalyst under visible light

Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNS), a novel two-dimensional nanomaterial, find extensive applications in the field of photocatalysis. With the prohibition of bisphenol A (BPA), the utilization of bisphenol S (BPS), which is more resistant to degradation than BPA, has been steadily increasing. In this study, few-layer BPNS was prepared using an improved liquid-phase exfoliation method, showcasing its commendable specific surface area and notable adsorption capacity. Subsequently, a new type of nanocomposite material, BPNS-Cadmium sulfide (CdS), was hydrothermal synthesized involving BPNS and CdS. We conducted comparative assessments of BPNS, CdS, and their composite materials to identify the most efficient catalysts. Ultimately, we found that the composite material BPNS-CdS exhibited the highest capability for degrading BPS in an alkaline environment, achieving an impressive degradation rate of 86.9%. Notably, the degradation rate remained higher in an acidic environment compared to a neutral one. Through Electron Spin Resoance (ESR) experiments, it is revealed that BPNS-CdS, when exposed to visible light, generates •O2−, •OH, and h+ as confirmed. Additionally, we tested and validated the carrier separation and migration abilities of BPNS-CdS while also calculating the band gap for each material. Building upon these results, a possible photocatalysis mechanism experiment was proposed. Finally, the degradation products were analyzed using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS) and put forth a plausible pathway for the BPS degradation, and it was found that 4-Phenolsulfonic acid, Ethyl protocatechuate and Isophthalic acid are the main intermediates of BPS. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the synergy between non-metallic catalysts like BPNS and metal catalysts like CdS. It also offers new insights into the degradation mechanisms and pathways for BPS.

New MoS2/Tegafur-Containing Pharmaceutical Formulations for Selective LED-Based Skin Cancer Photo-Chemotherapy.

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. Despite the low mortality rate, rising incidence and recurrence rates are a burden on healthcare systems. Standard treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery are either invasive or toxic to healthy tissues; therefore, new, alternative, selective treatments are needed. In this work, a combined photothermal and chemotherapeutic approach is proposed. MoS2 was used as photothermal agent. It was prepared by a liquid-phase exfoliation and intercalation method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), followed by recirculation through a custom-built high-power ultrasonication probe. After 6 h of ultrasonication treatment, the average particle size was 165 ± 170 nm. Near-infrared (NIR) irradiation assays (810 nm, 0.1 W/cm2, 30 min, 180 J/cm2) confirmed that MoS2 nanosheets can efficiently convert NIR light into heat and reach 52 °C. The therapeutic doses of MoS2 (125 µg/mL) and Tegafur (50 µg/mL) were optimized and both were simultaneously incorporated into a Carbopol hydrogel. The cells were brought into contact with the hydrogel and irradiated with a custom-built NIR LED system. In HFF-1 cells (normal human fibroblasts), the metabolic activity was 78% (above the 70% toxicity limit-ISO 10993-5:2009(E)), while in A-431 skin cancer cells, it was 28%. In addition, the MoS2 + Tegafur hydrogels led to a 1.9-fold decrease in A-431 cancer cell metabolic activity, 72 h after irradiation, in comparison to MoS2 hydrogels, indicating a combined effect of photothermal and chemotherapy.

Femtosecond mode-locked laser at 1.5 μm region using topological semimetals NbAs nanosheets

For the first time, NbAs nanosheets are used as a saturable absorber for fiber laser mode locking, achieving high efficiency saturation absorption. NbAs nanosheets are prepared through a liquid-phase exfoliation method, and the following nonlinear optical testing is performed with a self-built twin balanced detection device, with a modulation depth of 3.92 %. Additionally, NbAs nanosheets are embedded in erbium-doped fiber laser as saturable absorber to produce stable laser output with excellent performance. NbAs nanosheets based saturable absorber can achieve a pulse width of 640 fs. Compared with other topological materials, weyl semi-metal NbAs nanosheets based saturable absorber shows narrower pulses and broader linewidths. Those results hold significant importance for exploring the potential applications of NbAs in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Passively Q-switched Nd3+ solid-state lasers with hexakis-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene and graphdiyne as saturable absorbers

In this paper, two-dimensional Graphdiyne and Hexakis-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene nanosheets were prepared using the liquid-phase exfoliation method and were then successfully applied to 1.06 µm passively Q-Switched all-solid-state lasers. The Hexakis-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene was applied for the first time in passively Q-Switched all-solid-state lasers, as we know. For Graphdiyne, the Q-Switched pulse achieved a narrowest pulse width of 415 ns, a maximum repetition frequency of 244.2 kHz, a maximum pulse energy of 133.53 nJ, and peak power of 321.77 mW was obtained. While, the narrowest pulse width, maximum repetition frequency, maximum pulse energy, and peak power for Hexakis-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene are approximately 398.4 ns, 297.1 kHz, 89.61 nJ, and 220.39 mW respectively. The findings demonstrate the promising potential of both candidates as saturable absorbers for signal modulation in solid-state lasers.

Tailoring Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator for Visible-NIR Photodetectors with Schottky Contacts Using Liquid Phase Exfoliation.

Layered semiconductors of the V-VI group have attracted considerable attention in optoelectronic applications owing to their atomically thin structures. They offer thickness-dependent optical and electronic properties, promising ultrafast response time, and high sensitivity. Compared to the bulk, 2D bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) is recently considered a highly promising material. In this study, 2D nanosheets are synthesized by prolonged sonication in two different solvents, such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and chitosan-acetic acid solution (CS-HAc), using the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) method. X-ray diffraction confirms the amorphous nature of exfoliated 2D nanosheets with maximum peak intensity at the same position (015) crystal plane as that obtained in its bulk counterpart. SEM confirms the thin 2D nanosheet-like morphology. Successful exfoliation of Bi2Se3 nanosheets up to five layers is achieved using CS-HAc solvent. The as-synthesized 2D nanosheets in different solvents are employed to fabricate the photodetector. At minimum selected power density, the photodetector fabricated using exfoliated ultrathin 2D nanosheets exhibits the highest range of responsivity, varying from 15 to 2.5 mA/W, and detectivity ranging from 2.83 × 109 to 6.37 × 107. Ultrathin 2D Bi2Se3 nanosheets have fast rise and fall times, ranging from 0.01 to 0.12 and 0.01 to 0.06 s, respectively, at different wavelengths. Ultrathin Bi2Se3 nanosheets have improved photodetection parameters as compared to multilayered nanosheets due to the high surface to volume ratio, reduced recombination and trapping of charge carrier, improved carrier confinement, and faster carrier transport due to the thin layer.

WSe2/BN heterostructure as saturable absorber for a diode-pumped passively Q-switched 2 µm solid-state laser.

We have successfully achieved the synthesis of heterojunction consisting of WSe2 and BN, by using a liquid phase exfoliation method, and characterization of the prepared materials under the microstructure. The WSe2/BN heterojunction was used as a saturable absorber in the Tm:YAP laser for passively Q-switched operation, and a pulsed laser with an output wavelength around 2 µm range was successfully obtained. After comparing the effects of resonators composed of different cavity mirrors, it is concluded that when the curvature radius of the input mirror is 250 mm and the transmittance of the output coupler is 2.5%, the best output performance was obtained. The maximum average output power of 834 mW was achieved, with a pulsed repetition frequency of 43.51 kHz and a minimum pulse duration of 1.28 µs, corresponding to a peak power of 14.97 W and a maximum single pulse energy of 19.17 µJ.

Facile and efficient preparation of hemicellulose-assisted MoS2 nanosheets via green liquid-phase exfoliation method

A facile, environmental-friendly and efficient exfoliation process has been reported to produce MoS2 nanosheets at room temperature via liquid-phase exfoliation method using hemicellulose as an assistant in aqueous solution. It is found that bulk MoS2 has been successfully exfoliated into few-layered MoS2 nanosheets. The non-polar sites of hemicellulose can firmly adhere to MoS2 surface, whereas the hydrophilic branches can facilitate the dispersion, resulting in the effective exfoliation in aqueous solution. The exfoliated dispersions of MoS2 nanosheets are homogeneous and highly stable over 7 months, even stored at ambient conditions. The optical properties of exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets were investigated by UV–Vis, and the morphological characterizations were examined by SEM, TEM, AFM, XRD and Raman. The results show that the hemicellulose-assisted MoS2 nanosheets produced by 10 mg/ml initial concentration have approximately 8–9 layers. Also, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) capability of as-prepared MoS2 nanosheets is observable with the enhancement factor (EF) of about 4 × 104, indicating that the hot-spots can be generated on nanosheets. It demonstrates a plausible application of exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets as a SERS substrate as well as a great potential for other solution-based device fabrication. This present liquid-phase exfoliation method is a green, simple and effective process for mass production of MoS2 nanosheets.

Bionanoengineered 2D monoelemental selenene for piezothrombolysis

Thrombosis-related diseases represent the leading causes of disability or death worldwide. However, conventional thrombolytic therapies are subjected to narrow therapeutic window, short circulation half-life and bleeding. Herein, we rationally design and develop a safe and efficient nonpharmaceutical thrombolysis strategy based on a specific piezocatalytic effect arising from platelet membrane (PM)-conjugated two-dimensional (2D) piezoelectric selenene, Se-PM nanosheets (NSs). The 2D selenene is fabricated from nonlayered bulk selenium powder by a facile liquid-phase exfoliation method, and the PM conjugation confers selenene with the distinct thrombus-homing feature. Under ultrasonic activation, the piezoelectric characteristic of selenene triggers electrons and holes separation, resulting in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by reacting with surrounding H2O and O2 in the thrombosis microenvironment for thrombolysis. Both systematic in vitro and in vivo assessments demonstrate that the biocompatible Se-PM NSs efficiently degrade erythrocytes, fibrin and artificial blood clots under ultrasound irradiation. Compared to the clinical thrombolytic drug urokinase plasminogen activator, the engineered Se-PM NSs possess excellent thrombolytic efficacy by single treatment in the tail thrombosis animal model without bleeding risk. The engineered Se-PM nanoplatform marks an exciting jumping-off point for research into the application of piezocatalysis in clinical treatment of thrombosis.

Hydrogen storage capacity of two-dimensional MoS2

Hydrogen storage holds a crucial place for the future of the world in terms of green energy. Two-dimensional materials, in particular, are important in this regard. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of MoS2 which is one of the most popular member of two-dimensional materials family. To do this, bulk and exfoliated MoS2 were used. Firstly, the liquid phase exfoliation method was employed to obtain exfoliated MoS2 layers. Then, the hydrogen storage potential of the bulk and exfoliated MoS2 was addressed under 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 bar hydrogen pressure. After the absorption process, all the samples were characterized using XRD, Raman Spectrometer, and BET ahead of evaluating their hydrogen storage potential. The XRD pattern showed that the peak positions of bulk and exfoliated MoS2 were not affected critically by hydrogen storage. In the Raman spectra, the A1g and E2g1 peaks of all hydrogenated materials shifted to low wavelengths. Moreover, the BET measurements revealed that the specific surface area and the pore size of the bulk MoS2 were 12.31 m2/g and ≤67.46 nm respectively. Additionally, the specific surface area and the pore size of the exfoliated MoS2 were 23.16 m2/g and ≤69.28 nm, respectively. The hydrogen storage potential of the bulk and the exfoliated MoS2 was evaluated through an MFC in sccm unit. The bulk and exfoliated MoS2 stored 220 and 450 sccm hydrogen, respectively. Besides, the weight percent hydrogen storage for H–MoS2 and H-exfoliated MoS2 was determined to be 1.2 and 2.4 wt%, respectively. In summary, this study has shown that exfoliated MoS2, one of the two-dimensional materials, can play a critical role for hydrogen storage due to their high specific surface area.

Dielectric and Magnetic Composites of Fe3O4@APNs for Superior Microwave Thermal Effect.

As for the deep tissue infections of chronic osteomyelitis, antibiotics are hard to deliver into the infected bone tissue, which makes it difficult to be cured completely in clinic. Microwave has strong penetration, and the medium can produce a good bactericidal effect through the microwave thermal effect (MTE). Here, a new microwave sensitizer (Fe3O4@APNs) was prepared and evaluated. Black phosphorus nanosheets modified with phytic acid dodecasodium (APNs) were fabricated by a liquid-phase exfoliation method that exhibited good water oxygen stability. A complex with Fe3O4 compound and APNs (Fe3O4@APNs) was formed by an ultrasonic mixing process, which showed excellent MTE (quickly increased to 53.5 °C in 5 min at 2.45 GHz, 10 W/cm2) via dielectric versus magnetic loss (reflect loss value of -5.94 dB at 2.45 GHz). The Fe3O4@APNs microwave sensitizer developed in this study has an outstanding in vitro antibacterial effect and might show promise for the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis enabled by local tissue heating via the MTE.

Design, preparation, and photocatalytic performance of MoSe2 quantum dots modified BiOCl composite photocatalysts

BiOCl-based heterojunctions with effective charge separation/transportation are highly desired for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Fantastic 0D/2D heterojunctions between MoSe2 Quantum dots (QDs) and BiOCl (MoSe2 QDs/BiOCl) were synthesized via liquid phase exfoliation and hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscopy confirm the excellent crystallinity and the superior surface morphology of the combination of the two materials. The UV–Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy shows that MoSe2 QDs/BiOCl exhibits enhanced light absorption. Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements suggest that the MoSe2 QDs/BiOCl heterojunction promotes charge separation and transport of photogenerated carriers. As results, the optimized MoSe2 QDs/BiOCl with 0.5 wt% of MoSe2 QDs significantly enhances the degradation rate of Rhodamine B to 3.59 times (2.76 × 10−3 min−1) that of pristine BiOCl (7.66 × 10−4 min−1). Free radical capture experiments indicate that ·O2− plays an overwhelming role in the Rhodamine B degradation, compared to h+ or ·OH. Our experiments provide some new ideas for improving the photocatalytic degradation performance of BiOCl.

Study of the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on Macroscopic Snse-Based Photoelectrodes

Conversion of solar energy to valuable chemicals by using photoelectrochemical (PEC) techniques such as water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) and nitrogen reduction reaction (N2RR), are promising methods to solve the issues of energy crisis and global warming [1-2]. Two-dimensional (2D) and layered semiconductors, for example, transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs), metal oxides and MXenes have attracted great attention for PEC applications because of their unique properties, such as high carrier mobility, tunable bandgap, anisotropic carrier transport, and high specific surface area [3]. Our review indicates that, i) 2D and layered semiconductors can be applied for different PEC applications, both in oxidation and reduction reactions, and have ability to give higher performance in water reduction (i.e., hydrogen evolution reaction, HER) than in the other ones. ii) TMCs have been the most studied material with higher performance than the others. However, high PEC performance was achieved only on single crystal TMCs or in microelectrochemical cells, implying a limitation in the scalability of this solar energy conversion approach [4]. There is a clear need to study macroelectrodes prepared from polycrystalline semiconductors and identify the opportunities and barriers for their applications. In our study [5], tin(II) selenide (SnSe) was used as a photoelectrode for PEC HER since it has not been widely investigated for this PEC application. We fabricated SnSe macroscopic photocathodes by depositing SnSe flakes, made from commercial SnSe crystals using a liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) method, on glassy carbon. The as-received SnSe crystals were exfoliated in isopropanol/water mixtures (IPA/H2O) and pure IPA, respectively. Pure IPA was found to be the optimal solvent to prepare flakes and for achieving the highest PEC activity. An additional size separation to make three different size fractions of SnSe crystals served to further optimize the LPE process. Electrodes prepared from the largest flakes showed the highest photocurrent density of 2.44 ± 0.65 mA cm–2 at –0.74 V vs. RHE. The photodeposited Pt co-catalyst on SnSe surface further accelerated the PEC HER activity to 4.39 ± 0.15 mA cm–2. Intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy results manifested that the Pt co-catalyst enhanced the charge transfer process and suppressed charge carrier recombination. Overall, the solvent for exfoliation, the edge density of SnSe nanoflakes, immobilization method, and Pt co-catalyst affected the PEC HER performance of SnSe. These results indicate the merit of employing SnSe electrodes for PEC HER and inspire us to explore other photoelectrocatalytic reactions on the macroscopic exfoliated SnSe electrodes.

Generation of Bright-Dark soliton pairs in mode-locked fiber laser based on WSe2/MoSe2 heterojunction

In this study, the WSe2/MoSe2 heterojunction was fabricated by liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) method with a modulation depth of 11.39 % and saturable intensity of 0.246 GW/cm2. The WSe2/MoSe2 heterojunction was used as a saturable absorber (SA) to achieve bright-dark soliton pairs modulation in Er-doped fiber laser (EDFL)successfully. Stable bright-dark soliton pairs, with a repetition frequency of 4.459 MHz, were successfully generated using a pump power of 218.8 mW. The central wavelengths were found to be at 1564.16 nm and 1564.98 nm with the peak-to-peak spacing of 0.82 nm. The single-pulse energy was determined to be 0.7 nJ. The experimental results demonstrate the exceptional nonlinear saturable absorption characteristics of the WSe2/MoSe2 heterojunction. These findings offer valuable insights for future research on bright-dark soliton pairs utilizing this material.

VTe2: Broadband Saturable Absorber for Passively Q-Switched Lasers in the Near- and Mid-Infrared Regions.

In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of a novel 2D transition metal dichalcogenide, VTe2, into a saturable absorber (SA) by using the liquid phase exfoliation method. Furthermore, the first-principles calculations were conducted to elucidate the electronic band structures and absorption spectrum. The nonlinear optical absorption properties of VTe2 at 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 μm were measured using open-aperture Z-scan and P-scan methods, which showed saturation intensities and modulation depths of 95.57 GW/cm2 and 9.24%, 3.11 GW/cm2 and 7.26%, and 15.8 MW/cm2 and 17.1%, respectively. Furthermore, in the realm of practical implementation, the achievement of stable passively Q-switched (PQS) lasers employing SA composed of few-layered VTe2 nanosheets has manifested itself with broadband operating wavelengths from 1.0 to ∼3.0 μm. Specifically, PQS laser operations from near-infrared to mid-infrared with pulse durations of 195 and 563 ns for 1.0 and 2.0 μm solid-state lasers, respectively, and 749 ns for an Er3+-doped fluoride fiber laser at 3.0 μm were obtained. Our experimental results demonstrate that VTe2 is a potential broadband SA device for achieving PQS lasers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of using VTe2 as an SA in PQS lasers in the near- and mid-infrared regions, which highlights the potential of VTe2 for future research and applications in optoelectronic devices.

Efficient Fluoride Removal from Aqueous Solution Using Graphene/Ce Composite Supported on Activated Carbon

Background: More than 260 million people worldwide are affected by excess fluoride (F- > 1.5 mg/L) in their drinking water. Fluorosis of the teeth and skeleton, among other health issues, is caused by it. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the fluoride removal from contaminated water using graphene-based new adsorbent material. Method: Graphene (G) was prepared by a facile liquid-phase exfoliation method. CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. G was treated with CeO2 NPs in a probe sonicator to generate G/Ce material in solution. Finally, the impregnation evaporation process synthesized the G/Ce supported on activated carbon composite (G/Ce/AC). Results: FE-SEM analysis shows that the crumpling and scrolling sheets of G, the nanosized spherical shape of CeO2 NPs and a thick layer of nano-sized spherical particles has built up on the surface of graphene in G/Ce/AC composite. After conversion to G/Ce/AC Composite, the specific surface area of graphene was increased from 3.08 to 485.3621 m2/g. The adsorption of fluoride on G/Ce/AC was investigated using batch systems (effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and the initial fluoride concentration), adsorption isotherm and kinetic studies. The pseudo-second order was the one that best described the kinetic data, while the Langmuir isotherm best described the equilibrium data with a maximum adsorption capacity equal to 27.9 mg/g. Conclusion: Therefore, the results show that the G/Ce/AC composite was well synthesized and has excellent fluoride adsorption capacity compared to other materials already evaluated for this purpose.

Phytic Acid-Promoted Exfoliation of Black Phosphorus Nanosheets for the Fabrication of Photothermal Antibacterial Coatings.

Medical device-associated infections (MDAI) caused by planktonic pathogens are of serious concern worldwide due to the emergence of drug resistance resulting from continuous overuse or misuse of antibiotics. Therefore, the design of non-antibiotics-based treatment for MDAI is of crucial importance. Black phosphorus (BP), a novel 2D material, has recently received much attention owing to its remarkable physical, chemical, mechanical, and functional features. However, the intricacy of the fabrication process has severely hampered the development of BP in prospective applications. In this study, a simple and eco-friendly liquid-phase exfoliation method of phytic acid (PA)-promoted exfoliation of BP nanosheets (PA@BP NSs) is developed for their potential application in antibacterial photothermal therapy. To impart the antimicrobial effects, the polydimethylsiloxane surfaces are functionalized with quaternized polymer (polyquaternium-2 or PQ) and PA@BP NSs, leading to the formation of PA-BP-PQ composite coatings. In addition to the contact-killing antibacterial effect of the cationic PQ, the PA-BP-PQ coating exhibits remarkable near-infrared irradiation-triggered bactericidal effects with low cytotoxicity both in vitro and in vivo. This study proposes a simple liquid-phase exfoliation technique for the fabrication of BP NSs and a one-step approach for the construction of PA-BP-PQ composite coatings for bi-modal (contact-killing and photothermal) antimicrobial therapy.
