Dielectric anisotropy in self-assembling MXene-based lyotropic nematic compounds

The formation of a lyotropic liquid crystal phase at the level of MXene-based aqueous dispersions due to the self-assembling capacity of these two-dimensional (2D) materials has been previously successfully reported. However, the influence of electrical external factors has been less studied in spite of the fact that understanding the electrical behaviour of 2D-based liquid crystal compounds is vital for fostering the development of new innovative applications. Consequently, within this paper, we report an in-depth evaluation of the dielectric properties of liquid crystalline phases in Ti3C2 MXene aqueous dispersions. The dependence on the low voltage of planar ε⊥′ to homeotropic ε∥′ orientational transition is emphasized and discussed, while the influence of the electric field frequency at the level of dielectric anisotropy is assessed in respect to various concentrations of MXene flakes within the same 2D-based compounds. Nonetheless, dielectric spectroscopy highlights the biphasic nature (containing both nematic and isotropic phases) of the studied aqueous Ti3C2 MXene inks visible up to 20% MXene. Above this concentration, the existence of a pure nematic phase in the dispersion of highMXene concentration (>20 wt%) was detected based on the evaluation of dielectric permittivity against various voltage values.

Liquid Crystalline and Gel Properties of Luminescent Cyclometalated Palladium Complexes with Benzoylthiourea Ligands.

The design and development of new luminescent metallogels formed by cyclometalated palladium(II) complexes in protic solvents were investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and rheology. Cyclometalated palladium(II) complexes based on imine ligand and ancillary benzoylthiourea (BTU) ligand showed red emission in solid and gel states. The formation of a lyotropic liquid crystal phase was observed for the complex bearing shorter alkyl groups on the BTU ligand. This complex also behaved as a thermotropic liquid crystal that displays a monotropic smectic A phase (SmA). Dynamic rheology measurements (frequency sweep in the 5-90 °C range) of the 1-decanol solution of palladium(II) complexes highlighted their supramolecular self-association ability to generate 3D networks and form gels as a final result.

Mechanistic Study of Amphiphilic-Assisted Self-Assembled Cadmium Sulfide Quantum Dots into 3D Superstructures.

Self-assembling of nanoparticles into complex superstructures is very challenging, which usually depends on postorganizing techniques or pre-existing templates such as polypeptide chains or DNA or external stimulus. Such self-assembled processes typically lead to close-packed structures. Here, it has been demonstrated that under carefully template-free reaction conditions CdS quantum dots (QDs) could be synthesized and simultaneously self-assembled into complex superstructures without compromising individual QD properties. The superstructures of CdS QDs attained by the chemical-based method demonstrate Stokes-shifted photoluminescence (PL) from trap states. Remarkably, the PL decay of superstructures exhibits a single-exponential feature. This behavior is unusual for the synthesized superstructures, indicating that the trap states are restricted to a narrow range. The growth mechanism of these superstructures is explained through the formation of liquid crystal phases (LCPs) with the help of a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis.

Modulating of Bouligand Structure and Chirality Constructed Bionically Based on the Self-Assembly of Chitin Whiskers.

Chitin can self-assemble into a liquid crystal phase with supramolecular chirality and Bouligand structure, which is widely found in the exoskeletons of arthropods. However, bionically replicating this structure via the self-assembly of chitin whiskers (CHWs) is still a challenge. Here, the effects of several internal and external parameters on the self-assembly of CHWs were revealed based on liquid crystal phase, chirality, Bouligand structure, and rheological properties. The formation of chiral liquid crystal phase and Bouligand structure largely depends on the concentration of CHWs and, meanwhile, is affected by the aspect ratio and zeta potential of CHWs and the self-assembly time. Impressively, introducing electrolytes and changing pH significantly affect the thickness of the electrical double layer, thereby also affecting the self-assembly of CHWs. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of CHWs' self-assembly process, which is beneficial for the bionic design of new nature-inspired functional materials with chiral characteristic and Bouligand structure.

Depletion interaction may reduce ice recrystallization inhibition activity of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) at high concentrations

In ice cream, food hydrocolloids are commonly used as stabilizers for controlling ice recrystallization. Recent studies suggest that some stabilizers might bind to ice crystal surfaces and inhibit recrystallization. However, this ice-binding mechanism is challenged by the fact that stabilizers at high concentrations sometimes have reduced activity or even accelerate ice recrystallization. In this work, we determined the ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI) activity of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) at different concentrations in the 3.0% sucrose solution by the splat assay and in the 25.0% and 40.0% sucrose solutions by the sandwich assay. Reduced activity at high CNCs concentrations was observed in the sandwich assay. It was not linked to the phase separation or liquid crystal phase formation of CNCs but was caused by the accretion of nearby ice crystals and the forming of large ice crystals with irregular morphology and high aspect ratios. A new explanation based on the depletion-interaction-induced accretion of ice crystals was proposed. Our findings might resolve the contradiction between the ice-binding mechanism and the stabilizer concentration effect and add more support to the interfacial mechanism of ice recrystallization inhibition. They also pointed out the importance of selecting suitable stabilizer concentrations for screening IRI active materials and manufacturing frozen desserts.

THE FORMATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF COLLAGEN LIQUID CRYSTALS FROM SNAKEHEAD FISH SKIN (CHANNA STRIATA)

Objective: Liquid crystals are special state of matters which have regularity of solid arrangement but had a liquid-like flow characteristics. Collagen is a biopolymer that qualified for requirements as the system of a liquid crystal because it is mesogenic and rigid in a triple-helix section. There are various sources of collagen that have been used; one of them is snakehead fish skin (Channa striata).
 Methods: The stages of research were collagen isolation, collagen identification, liquid crystals formation, and characterization. Collagen liquid crystals were formed by lyotropic method using 0.5 M acetic acid and treated with and without sonication at 30, 60, and 80 mg/ml concentrations. The formation of Liquid crystal phase characterized by using Polarization Ligh microscopy.
 Results: Mesophase analysis using polarized light microscope showed the presence of cholesteric phase (fingerprint pattern) which seen from the lowest concentration used in this study (30 mg/ml). The increasing of collagen concentration and sonication treatment can trigger the formation of clearly liquid crystal cholesteric phase under polarized light microscope. Infrared spectra of collagen liquid crystals both sonicated or not, showed no change in triple-helix.
 Conclusion: The formation of lyotropic liquid crystal of collagen from snakehead fish skin showed the cholesteric pattern without changing the triple-helix collagen structure.

Liquid crystal phase formation and non-Newtonian behavior of oligonucleotide formulations

Viscosity behavior of liquid oligonucleotide therapeutics and its dependence on formulation properties has been poorly studied to date. We observed a high increase in viscosity and solidification of therapeutic oligonucleotide formulations with increasing oligonucleotide concentration creating challenges during drug product manufacturing. In this study, we characterized the viscosity behavior of three different single strand DNA oligonucleotides based on oligonucleotide concentration and formulation composition. We subsequently studied the underlying mechanism for increased viscosity at higher oligonucleotide concentrations by dynamic light scattering (DLS), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized light microscopy. Viscosity was highly dependent on formulation composition, oligonucleotide sequence, and concentration, and especially dependent on the presence and combination of different individual ions, such as the presence of sodium chloride in the formulation. In samples with elevated viscosity, the viscosity behavior was characterized by non-Newtonian, shear-thinning flow behavior. We further studied these samples by DLS and 1H NMR, which revealed the presence of supra-molecular assemblies, and further characterization by polarized light and DSC characterized these assemblies as liquid crystals in the formulation. The present study links the macroscopic viscosity behavior of oligonucleotide formulations to the formation of supra-molecular assemblies and to the presence of liquid crystals, and highlights the importance of formulation composition selection for these therapeutics.

Synthesis and properties of fluorinated terphenyl liquid crystals utilizing 5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta[b]thiophene as core unit

5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta[b]thiophene was incorporated to fluorinated terphenyl and six novel liquid crystals were designed and synthesized by Suzuki coupling reactions in high yields. These mesogens possessed wide smectic A or nematic phase ranges, which proved the usefulness of this core in the formation of liquid crystal phase as 1,4-disubstituted phenylene-based reference compound have no mesomorphic phase. Besides, the birefringence and dielectric anisotropy values of liquid crystals were also increased, making this core a practical candidate for the modification of terphenyl-typed mesogens. The density functional theory calculations were then used and whose reliability was ensured by comparison of the experimental and calculated absorption spectrum. The calculated length/width ratios of mesogens were improved after the introduction of this core unit, which might promote the formation of mesomorphic phases. The orders of calculated polarizability and dipole moment of two representative mesogens and their references were in agreement with the sequences of their birefringence and dielectric anisotropy values, respectively, providing some relationship information between microscopic molecular structures and macroscopic physical properties.

Preparation of Highly Stable Oil-in-Water Emulsions with High Ethanol Content Using Polyglycerol Monofatty Acid Esters as Emulsifiers

Oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions containing ethanol have been used in food, cosmetics, paints, and other applications. However, O/W emulsions with long-term stability are difficult to produce at high ethanol concentrations because the adsorption of the emulsifier at the O/W interface is restricted by ethanol. In this study, to resolve this issue, we prepared ethanol-containing O/W emulsions with high dispersion stability using a series of polyglycerol monofatty acid esters (PGFEs) with different fatty acid chain lengths, which are bio-safe nonionic surfactants, as emulsifiers. First, aqueous PGFE solutions containing 0-50 wt% ethanol were prepared and then O/W emulsions were formed using limonene as the oil phase. When decaglycerol stearic acid ester (DGMS, C18) was used as the emulsifier, an O/W emulsion with fine droplets (~30 nm in size) was successfully obtained at an ethanol concentration of 35 wt%. This emulsion remained stable for more than four weeks, during which no phase separation occurred, indicating its high dispersion stability. Furthermore, aqueous DGMS solutions containing 30-40 wt% ethanol were viscous, and a lamellar liquid crystal phase was observed to be dispersed in these solutions. The formation of this lamellar liquid crystal phase at the O/W interface led to an interfacial film with superior viscoelastic properties. The results suggested that the stability of the emulsions was determined by the balance between the decrease in interfacial tension caused by the addition of ethanol and the density (rigidity) of the DGMS film formed at the O/W interface. Finally, to further improve the dispersion stability of the ethanol-containing O/W-type emulsions, O/W emulsions were prepared using a mixture of two PGFEs with different degrees of glycerol polymerization, that is, systems having different hydrophilic-lipophilic balance values.

Interplay of Active Stress and Driven Flow in Self-Assembled, Tumbling Active Nematics

Lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) are a special type of hierarchical material in which self-assembled molecular aggregates are responsible for the formation of liquid crystal phases. Thanks to its unusual material properties and bio compatibility, it has found wide applications including the formation of active nematic liquid crystals. Recent experiments have uncovered tumbling character of certain LCLCs. However, how tumbling behavior modifies structure and flow in driven and active nematics is poorly understood. Here, we rely on continuum simulation to study the interplay of extensile active stress and externally driven flow in a flow-tumbling nematic with a low twist modulus to mimic nematic LCLCs. We find that a spontaneous transverse flow can be developed in a flow-tumbling active nematic confined to a hybrid alignment cell when it is in log-rolling mode at sufficiently high activities. The orientation of the total spontaneous flow is tunable by tuning the active stress. We further show that activity can suppress pressure-driven flow of a flow-tumbling nematic in a planar-anchoring cell but can also promote a transition of the director field under a pressure gradient in a homeotropic-anchoring cell. Remarkably, we demonstrate that the frequency of unsteady director dynamics in a tumbling nematic under Couette flow is invariant against active stress when below a threshold activity but exhibits a discontinuous increase when above the threshold at which a complex, periodic spatiotemporal director pattern emerges. Taken together, our simulations reveal qualitative differences between flow-tumbling and flow-aligning active nematics and suggest potential applications of tumbling nematics in microfluidics.

Synthesis and Properties of Thermotropic Copolyesters Based on Poly(ethylene terephthalate) and 4'-Acetoxy-4-biphenyl-carboxylic Acid.

A series of novel copolyesters based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and 4′-hydroxy-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (HBCA) was obtained by melt polycondensation of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate and 4′-acetoxybiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ABCA) as co-monomers with Sb2O3 as a catalyst. Using this synthetic procedure, a set of copolymers containing 20–80 mol% of HBCA units was prepared. According to NMR spectroscopy, the copolymers were of random composition. Copolyesters comprising 60–80 mol% of HBCA possessed increased heat resistance and formed nematic melts at 270 °C and higher. The liquid crystal (LC) phase formation was accompanied by transition to non-Newtonian characteristics of the melt flow, as well as an equalization of storage and loss moduli values. According to XRD and polarizing microscopy, the LC glassy phase of the copolyesters coexists with crystalline regions of poly-(4′-hydroxy-4-biphenylcarboxylate), non-melting up to 400 °C and above. The mechanical characteristics of these LC copolyesters showed similar or better values than those of well-known LC polymers. These novel copolyesters can be useful in obtaining heat-resistant materials with an ordered structure and, as a consequence, improved performance.

Systematic investigation of the influence of experimental conditions on TiO2 nanosheet structures

The morphology of TiO2 nanoparticles has great influence on their physical/chemical properties. Controlled synthesis of TiO2 with adjustable morphologies is of utmost importance for their target applications. Herein, a series of TiO2 with continually adjustable shape, size and crystal structures were synthesized via the hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide, followed by the self-assembly using P123 as structure-directing agent and ethylene glycol as co-surfactant under different solvothermal conditions. The effect of the diverse experimental conditions on the TiO2 nanostructures was systematically investigated. Particularly, an optimum TiO2 nanosheet was achieved and the formation of liquid crystal phase was observed. This work provides useful enlightenment for the fabrication of TiO2 nanostructures, which can be potentially employed in diverse fields, such as dielectric materials and photo-catalysts.

MAS NMR Investigation of Molecular Order in an Ionic Liquid Crystal.

The structure and molecular order in the thermotropic ionic liquid crystal (ILC), [choline][geranate(H)octanoate], an analogue of Choline And GEranate (CAGE), which has potential for use as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial and transdermal and oral delivery agent, were investigated by magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), polarizing optical microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and mass spectrometry. Mass spectrometry and the 1H NMR chemical shift reveal that CAGE-oct is a dynamic system, with metathesis (the exchange of interacting ions) and hydrogen exchange occurring between hydrogen-bonded/ionic complexes such as [(choline)(geranate)(H)(octanoate)], [(choline)(octanoate)2(H)], and [(choline)(geranate)2(H)]. These clusters, which are shown by mass spectrometry to be significantly more stable than expected for typical electrostatic ion clusters, involve hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid, carboxylate, and hydroxyl groups, with rapid hydrogen bond breaking and re-formation observed to average the 1H chemical shifts. The formation of a partial bilayer liquid crystal (LC) phase was identified by SAXS and polarizing optical microscopy at temperatures below ∼293 K. The occurrence of this transition close to room temperature could be utilized as a potential temperature-induced “switch” of the anisotropic properties for particular applications. The presence of an isotropic component of approximately 23% was observed to coexist with the LC phase, as detected by polarizing optical microscopy and quantified by both 1H–13C dipolar-chemical shift correlation (DIPSHIFT) and 1H double-quantum (DQ) MAS NMR experiments. At temperatures above the LC-to-isotropic transition, intermediate-range order (clustering of polar and nonpolar domains), a feature of many ILs, persists. Site-specific order parameters for the LC phase of CAGE-oct were obtained from the MAS NMR measurement of the partially averaged 13C–1H dipolar couplings (DCH) by cross-polarization (CP) build-up curves and DIPSHIFT experiments, and 1H–1H dipolar couplings (DHH) by double-quantum (DQ) build-up curves. The corresponding order parameters, SCH and SHH, are in the range 0–0.2 and are lower compared to those for smectic (i.e., layered) phases of conventional nonionic liquid crystals, resembling those of lamellar phases formed by lyotropic surfactant–solvent systems.

Large Graphene Oxide Flakes: From Isotopic to Nematic Liquid Crystal Phase Transition

Herein, graphene oxide (GO) with large flakes of average size 38 μm is studied, following the isotropic–nematic phase transition over time and determining the critical concentration, i.e., the minimum value for the formation of the pure liquid crystal (LC) phase. The GO flakes in aqueous suspensions can form LC phases, which are attractive for various applications because of their exceptional properties. Stability over time is very important for their applications, especially, if the GO suspension is in the biphase concentration region in which a crucial change can occur—the isotropic LC phase separation. GO LCs have a wide biphase region, and even very low concentration suspensions appear purely nematic when prepared. However, over time, they appear to be biphasic and higher concentrations are needed for pure LC phase. The changes in the critical concentration were followed for over 4 months, and the findings indicate that it increases with time until it reaches a stable value that is, nevertheless, very low in concentration, 0.7 mg mL−1 (0.035 vol%). From the stable threshold volume fraction, the effective flake thickness, relevant in the LC phase formation behavior, is estimated. This value is almost double than what is measured by atomic force microscopy.

Studies on the mesophase formation mechanism of polybenzoxazines: polymerisation induction

ABSTRACTTo study the mesophase formation mechanism of polybenzoxazine, a novel linear benzoxazine oligomer bearing cholesteryl side groups [poly(PC-AC)] was designed and synthesised through thermally activated ring-opening polymerisation of a monofunctional benzoxazine monomer (PC-AC). The PC-AC was obtained by Mannich condensation reaction using mesomorphic amine of cholesteryl 4-aminobenzoate, p-cresol and paraformaldehyde as starting materials. During the isothermal polymerisation of PC-AC monomer, the phase evolution from a crystal phase to an isotropic molten phase and then to a liquid crystal (LC) phase was observed. Since it is PC-AC oligomers that form the LC phase, ‘polymerisation-induced LC’ mechanism is put forward. We believe that the structure factors including the confined formation of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and the side chain position of mesogenic units also play an important role in the formation of the LC phase. Furthermore, poly(PC-AC) exhibits a smectic mesophase. This work provides new insight into the LC phase formation mechanism of polybenzoxazines. This is very helpful to guide the rational design and synthesis of polymers with high thermal conductivity and high-temperature resistance.

Effects of Sodium and Magnesium Cations on the Aggregation of Chromonic Solutions Using Molecular Dynamics.

Lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) constitute a unique variety of water-soluble mesogens that spontaneously assemble into elongated aggregates, thereby resulting in the formation of liquid crystal phases depending on the temperature and concentration. The influence of ionic additives on the aggregation of LCLC has been extensively studied, but the molecular mechanisms governing these effects remain unclear. In this investigation, we perform atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of dilute sunset yellow (SSY) LCLC solutions doped with NaCl and MgCl2 salts. Structural and dynamical properties of SSY hydration shells are considerably modified by the partial substitution of their H bonds with sodium/magnesium-sulfonate ion pairs. Although the intermolecular distance of ∼3.4 Å between SSY mesogens is preserved regardless of the ionic content, the growing number of ion pairs favors the reduction of the electrostatic repulsion between mesogens, increasing the length of SSY stacks. Moreover, magnesium cations exert the strongest electrostatic effects due to their higher hydration capabilities and acute electrostatic binding to SSY. For these reasons, experimental observations of dilute SSY solutions doped with Mg2+ exhibit higher nematic-to-isotropic transition temperatures than Na+. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the influence of ionic additives on the self-assembly of diluted LCLC solutions derived from the synergistic molecular mechanisms between mesogens, the solvent, and cations.

The pathway and kinetics of hierarchical assembly of ionic oligomers into a lyotropic columnar phase.

Ionic benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) molecules can self-assemble into hollow cylinders which further arrange into columnar phases in water. In situ investigations suggest a multi-step pathway of supramolecular assembly via formation of dispersed molecular aggregates followed by a less ordered intermediate phase before the equilibrium columnar phase is formed. The pathway and kinetics of the formation of lyotropic LC phases through hierarchical supramolecular assembly are similar to non-classical crystallization, in line with an emerging holistic view on crystallization and self-assembly.

Charge-stripe crystal phase in an insulating cuprate.

High-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in cuprates arises from carrier doping of an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. This carrier doping leads to the formation of electronic liquid-crystal phases1. The insulating charge-stripe crystal phase is predicted to form when a small density of holes is doped into the charge-transfer insulator state1-3, but this phase is yet to be observed experimentally. Here, we use surface annealing to extend the accessible doping range in Bi-based cuprates and realize the lightly doped charge-transfer insulating state of the cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. In this insulating state with a charge transfer gap on the order of ~1 eV, our spectroscopic imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements provide strong evidence for a unidirectional charge-stripe order with a commensurate 4a0 period along the Cu-O-Cu bond. Notably, this insulating charge-stripe crystal phase develops before the onset of the pseudogap and formation of the Fermi surface. Our work provides fresh insight into the microscopic origin of electronic inhomogeneity in high-Tc cuprates.

The alkyl polyglucoside/fatty alcohol ratio effect on the formation of liquid crystal phases in binary systems

The present research focuses on the alkyl polyglucoside, a non-ionic surfactant, in combination with a fatty alcohol of the same chain length used as a co-surfactant. A series of solutions were prepared, with varying both APG/FA ratio and its concentration in water. Different structures were then obtained, depending on these two parameters: aqueous micellar solutions, normal hexagonal liquid crystalline phase, α-gel phase, as well as the mixture of normal hexagonal/α-gel phases. A specific term “auto-emulsion” was introduced to describe the pseudo emulsions formed by the APG≤FA containing solutions because of the fatty alcohol, which dispersion in water was similar to an emulsion representation. The presence of the liquid crystals was revealed by optical microscopy under the polarized light, as different anisotropic conformations corresponding to the lamellar phase, the hexagonal phase and the coexistence of the lamellar and hexagonal phases, mainly for the most concentrated samples, were observed. These structures were characterized at the molecular level through the wide-angle X-ray diffraction technique and their macroscopic behaviour was investigated by rheology tests. Two main observations were then made: the variation of the surfactant concentration in solution promotes the transition between micellar region towards the liquid crystalline formation zone, while the APG/FA ratio impacts the formation of hexagonal phases (APG>FA) or of lamellar ones (APG<FA).

Mesogenic complementary absorbing dyads based on porphyrin and perylene units

Five novel dyads, consisting of a tetraphenylporphyrine unit connected to a perylene monoimide diester unit via a flexible bridge -CONH-(CH[Formula: see text]- (n [Formula: see text] 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12), have been synthesized. Their structures were characterized by [Formula: see text]C and [Formula: see text]H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The UV-vis absorption spectra revealed these dyads have broad optical absorption in the ultraviolet and visible regions due to the complementary absorption of the two units. The differential scanning calorimetry traces and polarized optical microscopy textures showed all these dyads have columnar liquid crystal phases. Cyclic voltammetry revealed the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the dyads located on the porphyrin units, and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals located on the perylene units. In addition, these results were in agreement with that of the theoretical modeling. When excited at 423 or 473 nm, the photoluminescent emission spectra showed that the degree of fluorescence quenching of porphyrin units increased as the spacers became shorter. This quenching was ascribed to intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer, which also induced the dyad molecules to form the charge-separated states. The charge-separated molecules were further confirmed by the photocurrent response curves. These behaviors of broad absorption of the ultraviolet-visible light, yielding the charge-separated states of the molecules when excited and the formation of columnar liquid crystal phase made these dyads candidates for single-component photovoltaic active materials.
