Generation of Propagation-Dependent OAM Self-Torque with Chirped Spiral Gratings

The application of non-uniform spiral gratings to control the structure, topological parameters and propagation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams was studied experimentally with coherent near-infrared light. Adapted digital spiral grating structures were programmed into the phase map of a high-resolution liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM). It is shown that characteristic spatio-spectral anomalies related to Gouy phase shift can be used as pointers to quantify rotational beam properties. Depending on the sign and gradient of spatially variable periods of chirped spiral gratings (CSGs), variations in rotation angle and angular velocity were measured as a function of the propagation distance. Propagation-dependent self-torque is introduced in analogy to known local self-torque phenomena of OAM beams as obtained by the superposition of temporally chirped or phase-modulated wavepackets. Applications in metrology, nonlinear optics or particle trapping are conceivable.

High-Throughput Two-Photon 3D Printing Enabled by Holographic Multi-Foci High-Speed Scanning.

The emerging two-photon polymerization (TPP) technique enables high-resolution printing of complex 3D structures, revolutionizing micro/nano additive manufacturing. Various fast scanning and parallel processing strategies have been proposed to promote its efficiency. However, obtaining large numbers of uniform focal spots for parallel high-speed scanning remains challenging, which hampers the realization of higher throughput. We report a TPP printing platform that combines galvanometric mirrors and liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM). By setting the target light field at LCoS-SLM's diffraction center, sufficient energy is acquired to support simultaneous polymerization of over 400 foci. With fast scanning, the maximum printing speed achieves 1.49 × 108 voxels s-1, surpassing the existing scanning-based TPP methods while maintaining high printing resolution and flexibility. To demonstrate the processing capability, functional 3D microstructure arrays are rapidly fabricated and applied in micro-optics and micro-object manipulation. Our method may expand the prospects of TPP in large-scale micro/nanomanufacturing.

Oblique-Incidence Interferometric Measurement of Optical Surface Based on a Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Spatial Light Modulator

An oblique-incidence interferometric measurement method is proposed to measure and adjust optical surfaces with a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM). The optical system only consists of an interferometer and an LCoS-SLM with precision mounts. It could reduce the measuring cost and time consumption due to the programmable function of the LCoS-SLM and offer the ability to align the optical system. The oblique-incidence measurement theory and optical system adjustment method are established based on an off-axis paraboloid model. The ray-tracing program to calculate the compensation phase map in the measurement is proposed with math models. In the optical alignment step, the off-axis paraboloid model is used to apply the LCoS-SLM as a phase compensator to generate a focusing spot or light spot array to adjust the measured optical surface. And in the interferometric measurement step, the calculated compensation phase map from the ray-tracing calculation is loaded on the LCoS-SLM using the same optical setup as the optical alignment step without any mechanical adjustment. Two interference measurement experiments of typical optical surfaces were carried out to verify the accuracy of the measuring system.

Multi-object distance determination by analysis of CoC variation for dynamic structured light.

A multi-object distance determination method can be achieved by 932 nm structured light with one camera as the data receiver. The structured light generated by a liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM) facilitates dynamic image projection on targets. A series of moving light strip images were captured and collected for data analysis. This method lifted the limitation of single-object distance determination and the limitation of the angle requirement between the camera and the light source in the triangulation method. The average error of this method was approximately 3% in the range of 700 mm to 1900 mm away from LCoS-SLM without further optimization. It provides a potential compact design for indoor multi-object distance determination in the future.

Fast 2-photon stimulation using holographic patterns.

Two decades after its introduction, optogenetics - a biological technique to control the activity of neurons or other cell types with light - remains a cutting edge and promising tool to study biological processes. Its increasing usage in research varies widely from causally exploring biological mechanisms and neural computations, to neurostimulation and sensory restauration. To stimulate neurons in the brain, a variety of approaches have been developed to generate precise spatiotemporal light patterns. Yet certain constrains still exists in the current optical techniques to activate a neuronal population with both cellular resolution and millisecond precision. Here, we describe an experimental setup allowing to stimulate a few tens of neurons in a plane at sub-millisecond rates using 2-photon activation. A liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM) was used to generate spatial patterns in 2 dimensions. The image of the patterns was formed on the plane of a digital micromirror device (DMD) that was used as a fast temporal modulator of each region of interest. Using fluorescent microscopy and patch-clamp recording of neurons in culture expressing the light-gated ion channels, we characterized the temporal and spatial resolution of the microscope. We described the advantages of combining the LCoS-SLM with the DMD to maximize the temporal precision, modulate the illumination amplitude, and reduce background activation. Finally, we showed that this approach can be extended to patterns in 3 dimensions. We concluded that the methodology is well suited to address important questions about the role of temporal information in neuronal coding.

Polarimetric calibrated robust dual-SLM complex-amplitude computer-generated holography.

Liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) is a widely used spatial light modulator (SLM) in computer-generated holography (CGH). However, the phase-modulating profile of LCoS is often not ideally uniform in application, bringing about undesired intensity fringes. In this study, we overcome this problem by proposing a highly robust dual-SLM complex-amplitude CGH technique, which incorporates a polarimetric mode and a diffractive mode. The polarimetric mode linearizes the general phase modulations of the two SLMs separately, while the diffractive mode uses camera-in-the-loop optimization to achieve improved holographic display. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposal in improving reconstructing accuracy by 21.12% in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and 50.74% in structure similarity index measure (SSIM), using LCoS SLMs with originally non-uniform phase-modulating profiles.

Experimentally simulating the beam shaping capabilities of piston-type deformable mirrors using a liquid crystal spatial light modulator

The number of mirror segments, mirror geometry and orientation are essential parameters when assessing the beam-shaping capabilities of deformable mirrors. Here, we use a Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulator (LCoS-SLM) to mimic the mechanical design of a deformable mirror and quantitatively analyse the effect of the number of mirror segments and their geometrical structure on resulting structured modes. Our approach can be used as a test bed prior to designing a deformable mirror for high power beam shaping.

LCOS-Based 3 × 3 Folded Wavelength Selective Switch With High-Resolution Spectral

We propose and experimentally verify a 3 × 3 folded wavelength selective switch (WSS) scheme based on liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCOS-SLM). This scheme adopts a concise double-layer folded structure that greatly reduced the structural complexity of the WSS system by using the same set of optical elements to accomplish twice beam deflection. The presented WSS is for the C-band, insertion loss is less than 13.2 dB, the spectral resolution is 1 GHz, the bandwidth tuning range is 16.25∼3750 GHz.

Fabrication of high-performance copper circuits using laser-induced forward transfer with large receiving gaps based on beam modulation technology

Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) technology has been widely used to print 2D/3D structural patterns in the micron level of metals due to its contactless and maskless advantages. Still, it cannot meet the practical needs of the industry due to its drawbacks, such as low efficiency and a small receiving gap. This study proposes a new LIFT by modulating a Gaussian beam into an Arc beam using a liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCOS-SLM) to achieve stable preparation of high-performance Cu circuits at large receiving gaps. First, the laser-induced monomer transfer modes of Gaussian beams and arc beams are studied. Then the effects of laser energy density, scanning velocity, and reception gap on the microcircuits prepared by Gaussian beam laser-induced forward transfer (GB-LIFT) and Arc beam laser-induced forward transfer (AB-LIFT) are studied systematically, and suitable process parameters are found. The transfer process of action of AB-LIFT is revealed. Under the optimized process parameters, the flight distance of AB-LIFT is up to 120 μm, which is about twice that of GB-LIFT, when the laser energy density is 1.94 μJ, and the scanning velocity is 3 mm/s. And the height of the microcircuit can be controlled by the number of depositions. It is demonstrated that the AB-LIFT can achieve stable transfer with large receiving gaps and efficiently prepare continuous Cu circuits with high bonding strength and low resistance. The minimum resistivity (7.46 μΩ∙cm) obtained by selecting optimized process parameters is about 4 times that of Cu bulk (1.76 μΩ∙cm). The application of the AB-LIFT method based on the beam modulation technique in microcircuit defect repair is verified.

Infrared metasurface absorber based on silicon-based CMOS process.

Metasurface with metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure has absorption properties for incident light at specific wavelengths. In this paper, we propose an infrared metasurface absorber based on silicon-based complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. By adding the prepared infrared metasurface absorber to the liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) chip, it is used as the absorbing layer of LCoS configured between the pixel unit and the CMOS driver circuit. The effect of zero-order light caused by the gap between pixels in LCoS spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM) on the light modulation function of the device is effectively reduced. Experiments show that the LCoS-SLM with infrared metasurface absorption structure can eliminate the zero-order light interference between the pixel gaps to a great extent and improve the modulation efficiency of the device. The proposed LCoS-SLM integrating infrared metasurface absorber structure based on silicon-based CMOS process has the advantages of low-cost and high modulation efficiency, which has high application value in the fields of holographic display, optical computing and optical communication.

High-Flexibility Control of Structured Light with Combined Adaptive Optical Systems

Combining the specific advantages of high-resolution liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulators (LCoS-SLMs) and reflective or refractive micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) presents new prospects for the generation of structured light fields. In particular, adaptive self-apodization schemes can significantly reduce diffraction by low-loss spatial filtering. The concept enables one to realize low-dispersion shaping of nondiffracting femtosecond wavepackets and to temporally switch, modulate or deflect spatially structured beams. Adaptive diffraction management by structured illumination is demonstrated for piezo-based and thermally actuated axicons, spiral phase plates (SPPs) and Fresnel bi-mirrors. Improved non-collinear autocorrelation with angular-tunable Fresnel-bi-mirrors via self-apodized illumination and phase contrast of an SLM is proposed. An extension of the recently introduced nondiffractive Talbot effect to a tunable configuration by combining an SLM and a fluid lens is reported. Experimental results for hexagonal as well as orthogonal array beams are presented.

LCOS Spatial Light Modulator for Digital Holography

Liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) spatial light modulator (SLM) is the most widely used optical engine for digital holography. This paper aims to provide an overview of the applications of phase-only LCOS in two-dimensional (2D) holography. It begins with a brief introduction to the holography theory along with its development trajectory, followed by the fundamental operating principle of phase-only LCOS SLMs. Hardware performance of LCOS SLMs (in terms of frame rate, phase linearity and flicker) and related experimental results are presented. Three-Dimensional (3D) Printing Implemented by Computer-Generated Holograms for Generation of 3D Layered Images in Optical Near Field

Photocurable three-dimensional (3D) printing is a stepwise layer-by-layer fabrication process widely used in the manufacture of highly specialized objects. Current 3D printing techniques are easily implemented; however, the build rate is slow and the surface quality is less than ideal. Holographic 3D display (3DHD) technology makes it possible to reform planar wavefronts into a 3D intensity distribution, which appears as a 3D image in space. This paper examined the application of holographic imaging technology to 3D printing based on photocurable polymers. The proposed system uses a 3DHD diffractive optics system based on a liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM), wherein a 3D layered image is created in the optical near field, based on a computer-generated hologram (CGH) optimized using the iterative angular spectrum algorithm (IASA) and a circular IASA. From a single CGH, multiple 2D sliced images are created in space to form a 3D optical image used to initiate the photopolymerization of photocurable resin to form 3D objects. In experiments, the proposed 3D printing system was used to create five polymer objects with a maximum axial length of 25 mm and minimum feature width of 149 μm. The phase-only CGH reformed the incident light into a distribution of optical intensity with high diffraction efficiency suitable for photocuring. Despite limitations pertaining to fabrication area and axial complexity in this initial study, the proposed method demonstrated high light efficiency, high resolution in the lateral direction, rapid fabrication, and good object continuity.

Fast measurement of the phase flicker of a digitally addressable LCoS-SLM

This work studied the phase flicker of Holoeye Pluto spatial light modulator (SLM), which is a typical, pure phase and digitally addressable liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM). We demonstrated a method for fast measuring the phase flicker of this kind of SLM, which uses only one photon detector to measure the intensity of the first order light diffracted by the binary grating. Our experimental results show that the higher the gray level, the more severe the phase flicker, but the average phase stability maintains about 3.1%. Our results also prove that the triangular wave model basically performs well as an approximate model of the phase flicker. Furthermore, the phase flicker waveform is mainly determined by the winner of the competition between two harmonics with frequencies of 300 Hz and 600 Hz. At the gray level of 125, the amplitude difference between the two harmonics is small, the model fails. Essentially, these results have nothing to do with the specific address voltage of the SLM, but are determined by the PWM waveform corresponding to the gray level.

Diffraction Efficiency Characteristics for MEMS-Based Phase-Only Spatial Light Modulator with Nonlinear Phase Distribution

Micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS)-based phase-only spatial light modulators (PLMs) have the potential to overcome the limited speed of liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulators (SLMs) and operate at speeds faster than 10 kHz. This expands the practicality of PLMs to several applications, including communications, sensing, and high-speed displays. The complex structure and fabrication requirements for large, 2D MEMS arrays with vertical actuation have kept MEMS-based PLMs out of the market in favor of LCoS SLMs. Recently, Texas Instruments has adapted its existing DMD technology for fabricating MEMS-based PLMs. Here, we characterize the diffraction efficiency for one of these PLMs and examine the effect of a nonlinear distribution of addressable phase states across a range of wavelengths and illumination angles.

Phase Compensation of the Non-Uniformity of the Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulator at Pixel Level.

Phase compensation is a critical step for the optical measuring system using spatial light modulator (SLM). The wavefront distortion from SLM is mainly caused by the phase modulation non-linearity and non-uniformity of SLM’s physical structure and environmental conditions. A phase modulation characteristic calibration and compensation method for liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM) with a Twyman-Green interferometer is illustrated in this study. A method using two sequences of phase maps is proposed to calibrate the non-uniformity character over the whole aperture of LCoS-SLM at pixel level. A phase compensation matrix is calculated to correct the actual phase modulation of the LCoS-SLM and ensure that the designed wavefront could be achieved. Compared with previously known compensation methods, the proposed method could obtain the phase modulation characteristic curve of each pixel on the LCoS-SLM, rather than a mono look-up table (LUT) curve or multi-LUT curves corresponding to an array of blocks over the whole aperture of the LCoS-SLM. The experiment results show that the phase compensation precision could reach a peak-valley value of 0.061λ in wavefront and this method can be applied in generating freeform wave front for precise optical performance.

Study on Aided Optical Alignment by Programmable Spots Array Generated by Off-Axis Parabolic Phase Based on LCoS-SLM

We present an aided optical alignment method using the liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCoS-SLM). An optical system composed of an interferometer and an LCoS-SLM was established to verify the effectiveness of the method. The system was also calibrated to solve the phase modulation nonlinear and nonuniformity problem for better performance of LCoS-SLM as an easily programmable phase compensator. The LCoS-SLM could modulate the phase of incident light precisely to generate an accurate phase desired to achieve a virtual off-axis parabolic phase to generate light spots array. Finally, the 2 × 2 light spots array generated by the optical system was used to verify its potential in optical alignment.

Quantitative characterization of holographic displays based on liquid-crystal-on-silicon spatial light modulator

This report discusses the effect of speckle size on the quality of holographic images based on a liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM). Further, it proposes methods of quantifying the average speckle size and holographic image resolution. These methods enable both characteristics to be compared using the same unit (the number of pixels in the holographic image), providing an intuitive and effective comparative analysis method. In particular, by varying the LCoS resolution ratio, the change in the resolvable minimum pixels of the holographic image is interpreted in conjunction with the average speckle size; moreover, an analysis of the correlation between the latter two is presented. This approach, based on LCoS resolution division, could provide useful insights into single-SLM-based, full-color holographic displays using space division. Furthermore, it could be extended to other components, including more advanced LCoS SLMs, and used to identify the relative effects on image quality with speckles.

Ultrashort Vortex Pulses with Controlled Spectral Gouy Rotation

Recently, the spatio-spectral propagation dynamic of ultrashort-pulsed vortex beams was demonstrated by 2D mapping of spectral moments. The rotation of characteristic anomalies, so-called “spectral eyes”, was explained by wavelength-dependent Gouy phase shift. Controlling of this spectral rotation is essential for specific applications, e.g., communication and processing. Here, we report on advanced concepts for spectral rotational control and related first-proof-of-principle experiments. The speed of rotation of spectral eyes during propagation is shown to be essentially determined by angular and spectral parameters. The performance of fixed diffractive optical elements (DOE) and programmable liquid-crystal-on silicon spatial light modulators (LCoS-SLMs) that act as spiral phase gratings (SPG) or spiral phase plates (SPP) is compared. The approach is extended to radially chirped SPGs inducing axially variable angular velocity. The generation of time-dependent orbital angular momentum (self-torque) by superimposing multiple vortex pulses is proposed.

Super-resolution with a complex-amplitude pupil mask encoded in the first diffraction order of a phase grating

Diffraction imposes a barrier to resolve objects smaller than half the wavelength used to illuminate them. In optical microscopy, this barrier was surpassed 25 years ago. One form of achieving super-resolution is the use of complex-amplitude pupil masks. Spatial light modulators can be used to produce these masks, if we compensate the aberrations introduced by them. In this paper we propose a method to encode a complex-amplitude pupil mask in a phase-only spatial light modulator of the Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) variety. We describe the form in which the pupil mask is encoded in a phase grating generated with an LCoS spatial light modulator, and how the aberrations introduced by this device can also be compensated with this grating. We present numerical and experimental results that validate the method.
